In recent conversations with our community of donors and friends, a common thread has emerged: your excitement about the universityâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s vision for the future and the many ways in which that vision is already taking shape. Thanks to your support, The New School is better positioned than ever to help students think critically to uncover truths, gain insight into the human condition, take risks, and design solutions to courageously lead change in a time when creativity and innovation are valued more than ever. The opening of the University Center marks the start of a new era at the university. This dynamic academic hub has already transformed our campusâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;generating a palpable sense of energy as students engage in collaboration and discovery. For the first time in our history, New School students have a space in which to fully integrate design thinking, social inquiry, and the arts. Add to that the access our students enjoy to opportunities available only in New York, and the result is a truly boundless experience. The New School has also been active around the world. The university launched undergraduate programs at the new Parsons Paris in 2013 and developed strategic partnerships with leading Parisian cultural and industry institutions. Parsons also partnered with the Indian School of Design and Innovation (ISDI) to open ISDI/Parsons Mumbai, which will serve as a base for study abroad options, visiting faculty, and creative collaborations. This is an exhilarating time to be part of The New School, as we centralize our New York campus in Greenwich Village, expand our global reach, and advance an academic vision that points to the next wave of innovation and engagement at the university. Building Connections The New School has long been known for fostering cross-disciplinary collaboration to effect change locally and globally. With the opening of the University Center at Fifth Avenue and 14th Street, the move of Parsonsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; School of Fashion from the Garment District and the centralization of the university around our Greenwich Village campus, our students and faculty can come together as never before. The building unifies the campus not just physically but culturally, providing a space where students from all fields can experiment with ideas, grapple with complex problems, and collaborate to create change.

5th Avenue

Thanks to the generosity of trustee John L. Tishman, more than 600 New Schoolers call this state-of-the-art student residence home. Amenities include a student lounge, study room, art room, and fitness center.

2. John L. Tishman Auditorium The new John L. Tishman Auditorium can accommodate up to 800 guests for events including lectures, performances, and runway shows.

3. Lecture Halls and Public Spaces The University Center provides our community with lecture halls and public spaces to gather for classes, performances, and other events. The New School is especially grateful to The Starr Foundation and trustee Bob Hoerle and his wife, Sheila, for their generosity in support of these spaces, which enrich our community.

4. Bernard and Irene Schwartz Commons Overlooking 14th Street, the university’s largest cafeteria provides students with a space to gather and eat between classes.

5. Arnhold Forum The Arnhold Forum houses the university’s main library collection and brings students together to learn from one another and share ideas, in addition to housing resource spaces for students like the Philip Scaturro Quiet Study Room.

6. The Mary and Michael Gellert Faculty Center For the first time in New School history, faculty across the university have a dedicated space where they can meet, work, and exchange ideas. The Gellert Faculty Center joins the Faculty and Staff Lounge, made possible by another generous trustee, in providing a space for collaboration and community building.

Supporting Student Success Our supporters are helping students unlock their creative potential and cultivate the skills needed to innovate and make significant contributions in their fields and their communities.

Ilse Melamid, a New School for Social Research Board of Governors member, made a generous seven-figure commitment to NSSR to support student fellowships and provide unrestricted support to the Annual Fund through both annual gifts and a bequest intention. At Mannes College The New School for Music, longtime friend Donn Russell made a generous bequest intention to support the Mannes Opera program, so that students can hone their artistry and present world-class performances for generations to come. Through our community’s support of The New School’s pre-college programs, future artists, designers, and musicians

have a place to develop the skills and gain the experience they need to excel in their fields. The Parsons Scholars Program, for example, enables low-income public high school students to study design at the college level and develop a portfolio of their work—a critical step toward gaining admission to a design school. More than 90 percent of the Parsons Scholars who complete the program go on to attend college, the majority being the first in their families to do so. Parsons alumni like Claire Chan (AAS Fashion Marketing ’11) and Jay Godfrey (AAS Fashion Design ’04) support these young people through generous gifts to the Parsons Scholars Program.

Expanding Opportunities The university connects students to an expanding world of ideas and opportunities with support from our generous community of donors. Our partnerships and initiatives help our students broaden their perspective, learn in new ways, and effect change in their communities and fields.

The New York Community Trust has partnered with The New School since the 1980s to support young people and the programs that improve educational outcomes for them. The Trust is a generous supporter of the Parsons Scholars Program, an innovative college preparatory program that introduces New York City high school students to careers in art and design. The Trust’s generous support has included college scholarships for students who complete this pre-college program and pursue their bachelor’s degree at Parsons. The Trust has also made possible a unique mentorship program for New York City youth to develop and present original interactive electronic products. The Trust has also been a longtime supporter of the Center for New York City Affairs (CNYCA) at The New School, an applied policy research institute that drives innovation in social policy through the work of its team of experts and the New School graduate students who work with them. The Trust is supporting the

expansion of CNYCA’s efforts to monitor and assess the performance of New York City public schools and help parents and students make informed decisions about school choice through CNYCA’s Insideschools website. As part of its Philips Lighting University initiative, Philips Lighting is collaborating with Parsons on a new international forum that will bring together architects, lighting designers, academics, and industry leaders to explore compelling contemporary issues in the field of lighting and design. The multi-year Luminous Talks project includes open café–style events, webinars, online discussion forums, and dedicated video channels, offering professionals and students a variety of opportunities to learn, connect, inspire, and be inspired.

Annual Fund and Parents Fund The New School’s Annual Fund and Parent Fund provide critical unrestricted support for many of the programs and initiatives that set The New School apart. This type of support helps us upgrade our facilities, take advantage of new opportunities, and enrich our community through scholarships and public programs. We are grateful for the generosity and participation of supporters like Jazz parents Gerine Ongkeko (who also volunteers her time as a member of the Jazz Board of Governors) and her husband, Jorge del Calvo. Lang parents Laura and Kirby Farrell and Mannes parents Claudia and Joel Nimar attend performances and programs on campus and meet with school deans. LaGuardia Dinner and The Tishman Family

Fashion Benefit The Parsons Fashion Benefit salutes innovators in the fashion industry while raising critical funds to support scholarships at Parsons. The funds raised each year at this event enable us to recruit and nurture the next generation of innovative artists, designers, and leaders. The event is also a launch pad for graduating students, who display their work to industry leaders in a runway show. In 2013, The New School honored Parsons alumni Jack McCollough (BFA Fashion Design ’02) and Lazaro Hernandez (BFA Fashion Design ’02) of Proenza Schouler, who first collaborated as students on the collection that launched their career, and visionary executive Bonnie Brooks, who helped pioneer high fashion retailing for the Hudson’s Bay Company in several roles, including president and vice chairman.

The New School’s Fiorello H. LaGuardia Dinner raises money for scholarships for students across the university. The 2013 dinner was a family affair. The New School honored a longtime friend of the university, Daniel R. Tishman, chairman of Tishman Construction Corporation and vice chair of AECOM. Dan’s father, John L. Tishman, has served on the Board of Trustees for more than 30 years and was honored at the 2006 LaGuardia Dinner. The Tishman family has long supported The New School’s efforts to find innovative solutions to real-world problems through scholarship and stipend programs like the Tishman Environmental Merit Scholars Program and the John L. Tishman Scholarships for Sustainable Development, Design, and Construction.
