The New School was founded in 1919 as a place where people could express their ideas freely and ask critical questions about the world. That founding vision has never been more timely. We continue to educate a new generation of creators and thinkers who can help make the world more just, sustainable, and joyful through dialogue and action.
Today we are the only comprehensive university housing a worldfamous design school, a premier liberal arts college, a renowned performing arts college, and acclaimed graduate programs and colleges, including our legendary social research graduate school. No other university offers a more creatively inspired, relevant educational experience. We challenge you to engage with the world in cities known for offering opportunity, access, and inspiration. The New School’s academic centers in New York City and Paris house over 10,000 students in more than 130 undergraduate, graduate, and continuing and professional programs designed to prepare them to create positive change in the world.
We are a community of scholars, artists, and designers who challenge convention and boldly pursue innovation. Here the walls between disciplines dissolve, so that journalists can collaborate with designers, architects with social researchers, media specialists with activists, poets with musicians. Our academic approach honors the individuality of our students. You are encouraged to follow your own path and purpose and put your ambitions to work in the world— because the world needs what you have to offer. The New School aims to help you develop the skills and resources you need to realize your potential and power.
