Classifications are based upon metrics reported to the Federal Government through the Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System (IPEDS)

Until 2005, the Carnegie Classification was only what is now called the “Basic Classification.” Under this classification, The New School is classified as a DRU: Doctoral/Research Universities After 2005, the Carnegie system of classification became more complex, adding five additional axes of comparison.
