WHEN TREATING A HEART ATTACK OR STROKE, TIME IS OF THE ESSENCE. EVEN DURING THESE TIMES. Don’t hesitate when it comes to getting emergency treatment. Even during a pandemic, you still need to be treated immediately if you have an emergency. Debating whether or not to risk going to an emergency room during a heart attack, stroke or other health emergency—waiting even a few extra minutes—could be harmful. That’s why in all BayCare hospital emergency rooms, patients who have symptoms of COVID-19 are screened and treated in a separate area. This helps keep emergency room patients and our team members safe. So if it’s an emergency, don’t wait. For more information: BayCareEmergencyCare.org

The Key to a Happy, Healthy Dad Just like a snap of the fingers, June is here and by extension, summer. This year has already held a number of events and catastrophes, to say the least. However, things are looking up for the first time in what seems so long. Among the chaos that seems to have made home here, there are two things we should all be focused on in the coming months: family, health and wellbeing. With Father’s Day in the near future, this presents the perfect excuse to celebrate with family. First celebrated in 1910, this holiday wasn’t nationalized until 1978 by Richard Nixon. Although it took quite a while for the fathers of the United States to have their own designated day of recognition, the holiday is now an annual event that sees a rise in barbecue meats and tie sales.
So, what’s a great way to spend Father’s Day? There’s no right answer, it depends on the dad (or dads) of your family and what they would like. In years past, I’ve known many friends who celebrate Father’s Day by simply having a quiet day at home, per Dad’s request. Others have a rowdy get together of just their immediate family with cheeseburgers, potato salad (with EXTRA mustard) and beer. Some have taken long drives to a local point of interest and spent the day on the beach or hiking through a local national park. The possibilities are endless, so long as Dad’s happy. You can be sure to treat Dad by making sure he’s

taking care of himself in honor of Men’s Health Month. No matter his age, Dad should be exercising regularly and eating well, even if you have to ask him to not eat around the spinach or invite him to join in walk the dog. There’s no time better than the present to start a new hobby or routine together. Whether you become walking buddies or decide to eat lighter one day a week, catering to a person’s health can help the whole family.
letting him know you care.
However, health isn’t limited to a person’s physical wellbeing. Mental and emotional health are paramount when it comes to anyone’s overall health. These two aspects of a person’s being create the foundation on which physical health stands. Although he may not want to open up, simply asking how Dad’s doing can go a long way in
Use this month as an excuse to break free from old routine and focus on Dad and health by making a new one. It may be challenging to get started, but once you do, it’s hard to stop. Take the time to be there for those who need it and learn what you can do to honor Dad.

IS A FLORIDA WILL ALWAYS NECESSARY? By WILLIAM R. MUMBAUER, ATTORNEY www.flwillstrustsprobate.com A reader asks: I have recently moved to Florida. I am continually being told that I should have a new “Florida Will prepared despite the fact that I am perfectly content with the Will I have from up North. Is a Florida Will really necessary? The short answer is no. This is because Florida law recognizes an out-of-state Will (and even a Will made in foreign country, for that matter) as valid in Florida as long as the Will meets the minimum requirements for a Will in the maker’s state of residence at the time the Will was executed. However, with that said, it’s always wise for those who have changed their residence to Florida to have a Florida estate planning attorney review their out-of-state Will. Because even though the Will will most likely be found to be valid, an experienced attorney may be able to suggest minor changes to the Will which could allow the Will to work better in Florida. For example, oftentimes it turns out that the person named as Personal Representative (Executor/Executrix) in the out-of-state Will does not qualify under Florida law to serve as Personal Representative. Not correcting a problem like this could have a devastating effect on one’s estate plan. And because it is unusual for an attorney to charge a fee to review a Will there is absolutely no excuse for not having an out-ofstate Will checked out by a qualified Florida attorney and possibly improved upon. Mr. Mumbauer, a 5th generation Floridian, has maintained a law practice in Brandon, Florida since 1980 with emphasis on estate planning. Mr. Mumbauer takes special pride in representing the senior community by maintaining a sensitive and practical approach to problem solving. Mr. Mumbauer is a member of the National Academy of Elder Law Attorneys, the Elder Law Section of the Florida Bar. Mr. Mumbauer is also a Mentor in probate law and has been qualified by the Second District Court of Appeal in Florida as an expert witness in matters involving the drafting of Wills. Mr. Mumbauer’s Martindale-Hubbell Peer Review Rating among judges and lawyers for Legal Ability is High to Very High and his General Recommendation Rating is Very High. Please note: Mr. Mumbauer’s articles outline general principles of law and are they are not intended to apply to individual circumstances.
Twistin’ the Years Away BY RANDAL C. HILL Though he was never much more than a rock ‘n’ roll footnote, Hank Ballard (1927 – 2003) briefly cracked the 1954 Billboard pop charts as the leader of the Midnighters by offering up such raucous R&B ditties as “Work With Me Annie” and “Annie Had a Baby.” For the next five years, though, Ballard disappeared from Top 40 airwaves before returning for a few late 1950s/early 1960s hit singles.
The first of these was a now-forgotten 1959 release called “Teardrops on Your Letter.” The B side was Ballard’s original version of “The Twist,” a dance song in which he based the melody on an obscure 1955 R&B Drifters tune called “What’cha Gonna Do?” Stories vary on whether Ballard created the simplistic stage movements or copied them from a group of Tampa teens he saw doing such a dance when he toured the South. Savvy Dick Clark, who helmed television’s megahit “American Bandstand”, sensed the hit potential of Ballard’s record but wanted to bring “The Twist” to a young, mainstream (read: white) audience. Lifestyles After 50 • Florida • Jiune 2020 • page 6
Ernie Evans had attended South Philadelphia High School, the former academic home of “Bandstand” idols Frankie Avalon and Fabian. After school, the outgoing African-American lad plucked chickens in a local open-air market while entertaining amused passersby with imitations of some of the day’s biggest record stars. Clark, a silent partner in Philadelphia’s Cameo/Parkway label, tapped Evans to mimic Ballard’s performance note-for-note. At the recording session, Clark’s wife, Barbara, noticed a physical similarity between Fats Domino and Ernie Evans; with this in mind, she coined Evans’ stage name: Chubby Checker. Checker’s chart-topping “The Twist” spent four months on the 1960 Billboard Hot 100 before fading away. Then something unique happened in the oftenbizarre world of rock ‘n’ roll: in 1962, Checker’s original version rocketed to the peak of the Billboard list for an unprecedented second time, followed soon by “Peppermint Twist” by Joey Dee and the Starliters, which also grabbed the Number One chart spot and helped to set in motion a massive Twist revival.
The second Twist craze that swept America proved to be even bigger than the first, with over a dozen more dance-related 45s earning places on the Billboard charts between 1962 and 1964. The year 1961 alone saw three Twist films in theaters. On October 11, 2012, 71-year-old Chubby Checker performed “The Twist” (for the zillionth time?) and led an estimated 4,000 merry Twisters in a DeLand, Florida, street party, an event that earned a mention in the Guinness World Record book.

Florida Orchestra brings suffrage song to life By KELLY SMITH Inspired by the 100th anniversary of women’s right to vote
As a four-decade veteran of show business, 63-year-old Tom Hanks has earned two Academy Awards, five Golden Globes and seven Emmys. And now, with the release of Sony Pictures’ “Greyhound”, he may have to make room on his awards shelf for a couple more. E. M. Forster was a celebrated British novelist popular during the early 20th century. His long list of literary accomplishments includes such classics as “The African Queen” and “The Barbary Pirates.” Many of his stories center around naval warfare, and Hanks’ new movie Tom Hanks, Greyhound is no exception. Based on Forster’s 1955 novel “The Good Shepherd”, “Greyhound” comes to life as a gripping fictional episode of the Battle of the Atlantic, the longest conflict of the Second World War. In a radical departure from his recent role of impossibly nice guy Fred Rogers, Hanks becomes a grim-faced naval officer named Ernest Krause (not to be confused with an 1890s U. S. Navy officer of the same name). Krause comes to us as a rigid, deeply religious career individual who has finally been given command of a destroyer, the USS Keeling (code name “Greyhound”), in the treacherous Atlantic Ocean during the winter of 1942.

Mettle
BY: MICHAEL B. WRIGHT Mettle: medl noun 1. A person’s ability to cope well with difficulties or to face a demanding situation in a spirited and resilient way. 2. The title of a Pink Floyd album, considered by many to be their very best. Our recent sojourn into abnormality via isolation and self-quarantine has taught us a great deal about ourselves and others, and about our true mettle and to what degree we do or do not have it. No doubt, many lessons have been learned.
My primary take-away has become: S-L-O-W D-O-W-N. I’m retired! My deadlines are few. Beside those of my editor, the majority of mine are self-imposed.
I qualify to be the bane of many people’s existence. I am both a punster AND a cheerful “morning person”. If I don’t set my alarm, I still usually wake up by 5:30 am. If I sleep in beyond seven, I feel like I’ve wasted the whole day. I have the entire day at my disposal, there’s no need to start early and streamline my day by multi-tasking in an attempt to get everything done before my wife wakes up. (she’s my “caregivee” and I just want to make life easier for her as she heals) I was not successful at multi-tasking (corpspeak for “too much on your plate”) on the job, nor have I grown successful at home. When I try, either I leave something unfinished, forget something altogether, or do something wrong. S-L-O-W D-O-W-N. Only women are adept at multi-tasking.
Then, there’s walking. Now and then I find myself doing what I call “the Old Man Walk”. Not the slow-shuffle of Tim Conway’s Mr. Tudball. I’m referring to the fast walk with shorter steps. When I catch myself doing it, I stop and say (literally) “Stride out, Michael!” Then I take longer steps, and cover more ground as I S-L-O-W D-O-W-N. Walking slower but with fierce determination makes one look pretty cool too (as long as you’re not dressed like a used car salesman wearing Haband trousers with a white belt to match your shoes).
I try to live my life in the same way I cook my more successful meals – Slow and Low (heat). “If it’s too hot, get out of the kitchen, or wherever there’s pressure.” Mike Wright can frequently be seen these days frying eggs on the sidewalks of South Lakeland, Florida. Exercise is Helping Me Stay Sane and Well During the Pandemic By LESLIE MEGYERI Basic training at Fort Jackson, SC in the 60s was torture for me. I was not at peak performance due to my lifestyle, lack of exercise, poor eating habits and irregular hours. Needless to say, I suffered two months of agonizing muscle aches, foot blisters and headaches. I left basic training fit and in such good shape that I vowed never again to let myself go. Consequently, even at my age (79), I start each day with push-ups, sit-ups and balancing exercises. Then, I walk or jog for an hour on six consecutive days and take Sundays off. As I’ve aged and now that we’re in the midst of a pandemic, I see just how beneficial any and all exercise is. According to the Journal of Sports and Health Science, exercise is good for the immune system, beneficial for metabolic health and enhances the circulation of immunoglobulins and T-cells that play a critical role in the body’s defense against pathogens. Exercise also lowers the duration of upper respiratory infections with reductions as high as 40 to 50 percent among those who are active on a daily basis. Even short bouts of exercise can amplify the body’s ability to fight off harmful germs.
2 . Yo g a , d e e p breathing and mindfulness help reduce anxiety. 3. Add strength training videos or workout apps to your phone such as the seven-minute workout with no equipment necessary. 4. Do squats or repeated stand-ups from a sturdy chair or push-ups against a wall or on the floor or lunges or single leg step-ups on the stairs. 5. Get up during every TV commercial and walk laps around your home or complete an active chore like throwing some clothes in the laundry, doing dishes or taking out the garbage. 6. Standing on one foot at a time improves balance and prevent falls. Carrying something simple like soup cans for weights helps. Exercise also helps prevent depression, diabetes, heart disease, strokes and high blood pressure. It improves your sleep, your mental health, your cognitive functions and your outlook. Need we say more? Les Megyeri has been a long-time resident of Venice, FL and is a retired US Army officer, a lawyer and a CPA. He regularly writes for Lifestyles After 50.
The American Psychological Association reports positive results of better moods and people feeling good about themselves as stress is lowered. High levels of stress make one more susceptible even to the common cold. Exercise provides a much-needed source of social support and camaraderie even when participants keep a safe distance from one another. So, moderate physical activity can result in better immune function and can reduce feelings of stress and anxiety. Current guidelines recommend 150 minutes or more of aerobic activity and two sessions of muscle strength training, both per week. Without a gym or any equipment, this is what you can do: 1. Walk, jog, bicycle or do yard work. Spending any time outside in nature helps our immune function.

Florida zip codes turn up silver for residents Sealed Vault Bags full of heavy silver bars are actually being handed over to the first Florida residents who find their zip code listed in today’s publication and call before the 7 day order deadline ends to claim the bags full of valuable silver NATIONWIDE – Operators at the National Silver Hotline are struggling to keep up with all the calls. That’s because Silver Vault Bags loaded with a small fortune of .999 pure Silver Bars are now being handed over to everyone who beats the 7-day order deadline. “It’s like a modern day Gold Rush. Florida residents will be hoarding all the silver bars they can get their hands on for the next 7 days. This comes as no surprise after the standard State Minimum set by the Federated Mint dropped 42%, going from $50 per bar to just $29 making these Silver Vault Bags a real steal,” said Mary Ellen Withrow, the emeritus 40th Treasurer of the United States of America. “As executive advisor to the private Federated Mint, I get paid to deliver breaking news. And here’s the best part. This is great news for Florida residents because it’s the lowest ever State Minimum set by the Federated Mint,” said Withrow. The only thing residents need to do is find the first 3 digits of their zip code on the Distribution List printed in today’s publication. If their zip code is on the list, they need to immediately call the National Silver Hotline before the 7-day order deadline ends. Residents who do are cashing in on the record low State Minimum set by the Federated Mint. This is a real steal for residents because each Silver Vault Bag loaded ■ FLORIDA RESIDENTS CASH IN: It’s like a modern day Gold Rush. 8:30 A.M. this morning and are expected to be flooded by residents looking to cash in on the lowest ever State Minimum set by the Federated Mint to date. That’s why Florida residents who find their zip code on the distribution list today are being urged to call immediately. Since this special advertising announcement can’t stop dealers and collectors from hoarding all the new 2019 Edition Florida State Silver Bars they can get their hands on, the Federated Mint had to set a strict limit of three Jumbo Silver Ballistic Bags per resident – these are the bags everyone’s trying to get because they contain 10 individual Silver Vault Bags each. Everyone who gets these will feel like they just hit the jackpot. “Residents who want to cash in on the lowest ever State Minimum set by the private Federated Mint better hurry. That’s because in 7 days, the State Minimum for these heavy half ounce Florida State Silver Bars returns to the normal State Minimum set by the Federated Mint of $50 per bar,” Withrow said. “We’re bracing for all the calls and doing the best we can, but with just hours left before the deadline ends, residents lucky enough to find the first 3 digits of their zip code listed in today’s publication need to immediately call the National Silver Hotline," Withrow said. ■
IMPORTANT INFORMATION: If you find your zip code on the distribution list printed in today’s publication read below then immediately call: 1-800-301-4289 EXT. FMM3524 I keep calling and can’t get through: Keep trying. Right now everyone’s looking to cash in on the lowest State Minimum ever set by the Federated Mint. In fact, tens of thousands of residents are expected to order up as many Silver Vault Bags as they can get their hands on before the deadline ends. That’s because the State Minimum set by the Federated Mint has been slashed from $50 per heavy half ounce to just $29 for the next 7 days. And since each Silver Vault Bag contains 10 valuable State Silver Bars for just $290 nearly everyone is taking at least three bags before they’re all gone. But all those who really want to cash in are taking the Jumbo Silver Ballistic Bags containing 100 State Silver Bars before the State Minimum set by the Federated Mint goes back up to $500 per Vault Bag. So if lines are busy keep trying. How much are the Silver Vault Bags worth: It’s hard to tell how much these Silver Vault Bags could be worth since they are highly collectible, but those who get in on this now will be the really smart ones. That’s because the State Minimum set by the Federated Mint goes back up to $500 per bag after the deadline ends. So you better believe that at just $290 the Silver Vault bags are a real steal for everyone who beats the deadline. Can I buy one State Silver Bar: Yes. But, the lowest ever State Minimum set by the Federated Mint of just $29 per bar applies only to residents who purchase a Silver Vault Bag(s). That means only those residents who order a Silver Vault Bag(s) or the heavy, Jumbo Silver Ballistic Bag(s) get the $29 per bar State Minimum set by the Federated Mint. All single bar purchases, orders placed after the 7-day deadline and all non-state residents must pay the standard $50 per heavy half ounce Bar State Minimum set by the Federated Mint. Why is the State Minimum set by the Federated Mint so low now: Thousands of U.S. residents stand to miss the deadline to get the silver at the lowest ever State Minimum set by the private Federated Mint. Now all residents who find the first 3 digits of their zip code on the Distribution List printed in today’s publication are getting the Silver Vault Bags for themselves and all the solid .999 pure State Silver Bars found inside. The price for each Silver Vault Bag is normally set at $500 which is the standard $50 per bar State Minimum set by the Federated Mint, but residents who beat the 7-day deadline only cover the lowest ever State Minimum set by the Federated Mint of just $290 for each State Silver Vault Bag which is just $29 per bar as long as they call the National Silver Hotline before the deadline ends at: 1-800-301-4289 EXT. Top Gun – Maverick

BY RANDAL C. HILL
After more than 30 years of service as one of the Navy’s top aviators, Pete “Maverick” Mitchell (Tom Cruise) is where he belongs—pushing the envelope hard as a test pilot and dodging an advancement in rank that would ground him. A commanding officer (Ed Harris) growls to Maverick, “You can’t get a promotion, you won’t retire, and despite your best efforts, you refuse to die. You should at least be a two-star admiral by now, yet here you are, captain. Why is that?” Maverick can’t resist a smirked response: “It’s one of life’s mysteries, sir.”
Are you ready to feel the need for speed again? “Top Gun: Maverick” zooms onto the scene before long, 34 years after the first box office smash of “Top Gun” that cemented Cruise’s status as a bona fide movie star.
Cruise, still looking “GQ”-magazine striking at age 57, again dons his cooler-thancool aviator sunglasses and leather jacket. Now he’s a flight instructor rather than a hotshot pilot, a hands-on teacher who silences the smug young recruits seated before him in a classroom by challenging two at a time to practice dogfighting with him.
But Maverick must also confront past ghosts, and he is inexorably drawn into a confrontation with his deepest fears. This culminates in a mission that demands the ultimate sacrifice for those who will be chosen to fly it. Along the way, we are treated to several reminders of the 1986 breakout flick. Pilots sing at a bar. An occasional fistfight erupts. Sports are played on the beach (football, not volleyball, this time). And Maverick roars down the highway on
his motorcycle, an action that almost seems to be mandatory for every film Cruise shoots. There’s also a cameo appearance from Cruise’s original rival, Tom “Iceman” Kazansky (Val Kilmer).
“Top Gun: Maverick” spends more time than before with Cruise in the cockpit. We see him going through some impressive—and risky— flight maneuvers as a voiceover explains to the training program’s students (and to the viewing audience, as well) that Maverick is one of the finest pilots to ever emerge from the prestigious Top Gun flight academy.
Tom Cruise, Maverick
Six IMAX-quality cameras in the cockpit depict the cast members enduring flight training alongside U.S. Navy pilots. “Everything you see in this film,” Cruise reportedly told people at the latest Comic-Con convention. “I wanted to give you an experience of being inside that aircraft.” New cast members include comely Jennifer Connelly (who replaces Kelly McGillis as Maverick’s love interest), Jon Hamm, Miles Teller and Anthony Edwards. “Top Gun: Maverick” releases in June.

Cuciate Ligament Injury By DR. LUKE VIRAMONTES, DVM
Y
ou’re likely familiar when our friends are playing a fun game of soccer or basketball, then you hear that they tore their ACL, or anterior cruciate ligament. Similarly, in our pets, the cruciate ligaments are vital supporting structures to the knee joint although in animals, it is termed the CCL, or cranial cruciate ligament. Historically in our pets, primarily in dogs, cruciate injuries are the most common reason for a sudden onset of hindlimb lameness (limping). When dogs succumb to cruciate injuries, it is primarily due to an already diseased or degenerative ligament, so that when they are running or jumping, the diseased ligament can not handle what is an otherwise normal force, and they hurt themselves. A physical exam can determine instability in the knee with certain techniques used to manipulate the knee. Knee x-rays will likely be recommended to 1) rule out other causes of lameness and 2) show any supportive evidence of a CCL tear, such as fluid in the knee joint (effusion) or displacement of the shin bone relative to the thigh bone. Sometimes, sedation may be recommended especially for more muscular dogs, so that interpretations of these diagnostics are as accurate as possible.
In many cases, surgery may be recommended for this injury if medical management with antiinflammatories and pain medications isn’t sufficient. Different techniques have been done in veterinary medicine to correct the injury - the specific surgery is likely to be tailored to each individual patient. When discussing surgery, a few things must be taken into consideration: cost (especially if being referred to a board-certified veterinary surgeon), recovery time and strict cage rest for at least 2 months, post-surgical complications including infection or implant failure, and the risk of the opposite cruciate ligament being injured in the future. Studies have shown that there is a 50% chance of injuring the opposite ligament in previously injured dogs, whether they are treated with surgery or not. So when concerned about a sudden hindlimb lameness, please consult your veterinarian so that the most appropriate action can be taken. Boyette Animal Hospital is proud to provide your pets with the highest quality of treatment and care from eleven veterinarians and a devoted staff. Speaking of Sam...
If there is any being who rejoices in the current stay-at-home directive, it’s our dog, Sam. Like most dogs, Sam becomes indignant when we go out and leave him behind. But lately, due to the weeks we’ve been forced to spend together, he’s convinced he owns us. As I gaze upon his little triumphant face, I’m reminded of when we brought Sam home almost five years ago. It’d been years since we cohabited with a young dog. Suddenly, baby gates and crates were again part of our décor. Floors were strewn with rawhide chews upon which I often stepped with bare feet. Thus, in addition to sit, stay and come, Sam learned many curse words. Then there were the dog toys that squeaked incessantly as he tried to rip out their guts. Adjusting to a small dog after having large dogs wasn’t easy. I’d never considered that small dogs can be a health hazard. They’re below one’s line of vision, so one must take care not to step on them, or worse, trip over them. There were instances when I called Sam, once, twice, three times, only to look down and see him staring up at me in puzzlement. It was fun watching Sam’s discoveries. Stairs, for instance. When one’s legs are only six inches long, it’s understandable that navigating steps was as daunting as scaling the World Trade Center. But he figured it out, and began bounding up and down, looking very much like a Slinky toy. The stall shower was another object of complete fascination. He’d sit, staring at the flowing water as one might gawk at Niagra Falls. He’d watch me intently as I stepped inside. Despite the joy that Sam brought us, we wondered if we acted unwisely. Perhaps a young, frisky dog was not the best plan for people on Medicare. Then I found this quote by author Dean Koontz: “Once you have had a wonderful dog, a life without one is diminished.” So, here’s to Sam, who makes staying at home that much brighter. May you live long and prosper. And may your energy keep the rest of us young.
