S E I R R E H T STRAWB L A E H and HEART Each February is American Heart Month, a month dedicated to maintaining or bettering one’s health through paying attention to their heart to protect against America’s number one killer, heart disease. This month has always been about hearts, largely in a romantic connotation, but the American Heart Association is celebrating the 57th annual Heart Month. February was adorned with this honor in 1964 by Lyndon B. Johnson, nine years after his own heart attack.
of antioxidants found in strawberries, known as polyphenols. These antioxidants help eliminate free radicals within the body that contribute to aging and cancer. Strawberries are also packed to the brim with vitamins and minerals such as manganese (increased blood flow) and potassium (muscle health) which both assist the muscle of the heart to beat in a steady, rhythmic beat without Image from FLStrawberryFestival.com interruption.
According to the Association’s website, heart disease kills more Americans annually than each form of cancer combined. The number of reported heart attacks in the country exceeds the population of Dallas, Texas, the ninth most-populous state in the U.S. Even with these astounding statistics, 72% of Americans don’t consider themselves to be at risk of heart disease. For this reason, American Heart Month is the perfect month to start doing more for your health. There are a number of different foods, exercises and lifestyle differences you can make to improve your heart health, but one great way is to indulge in fresh strawberries. Every Floridian knows that strawberries are currently in season with the upcoming Florida Strawberry Festival, so what better way to celebrate spring and do something for your heart than visit the Festival? From March 4 to 14, this annual event will take place in Plant City, Florida, for its 91st anniversary.
So, how do strawberries contribute to better heart health? According to WebMD, these little rubies increase HDL cholesterol (“good” cholesterol), lower blood pressure and help guard against cancer. Each of these benefits has to do with the high level
A study conducted by Dr. Eric Rimm, associate professor at the Harvard School of Public Health and Harvard Medical School, followed a study group of women ages 25 to 42 over the course of 18 years. It found that the women who ate less berries each week had an elevated risk of heart disease or heart attack. Dr. Rimm concluded it was in part due to the number of anthocyanins in strawberries, the antioxidant-like compound that gives strawberries their deep red color. If you’re looking to take action in guarding your heart against disease or attack, the Florida Strawberry Festival may be your best bet. While it may be difficult to turn down strawberry shortcake, be sure to indulge in the naked fruit itself more frequently than strawberry desserts. To read more about heart health and what you can do to improve yours, visit heart.org. Read on in this issue of Lifestyles about how laughing might be the answer to a number of health issues, including risk of heart disease, and a super simple chicken chili recipe chock-full of heart-health ingredients.

2021 FLORIDA STRAWBERRY FESTIVAL: Focus on Safety & Strawberries After an especially unpredictable year, one thing you can count on is the annual Florida Strawberry Festival in Plant City. The festival is set to launch this year on March 4 through March 14. With the theme of “All Aboard!” for 2021, the festival’s greatest focuses (aside from the berries, of course) are the celebration of “togetherness” and safety. This year, the Florida Strawberry Festival will implement the following changes: • Masks are required inside all structures and anywhere social distancing proves difficult, with consistent reminders to comply. • Additional 100 hand sanitizing stations throughout fairgrounds at entrances, exits, trams, etc. • Buying tickets online or in participating Publix Super Markets in advance is highly recommended • Daily sanitization of all touch points and buildings with open doors for air flow • Information ambassadors will be available on grounds to answer questions and assist in monitoring foot traffic • Entertainment venues, carnival rides, trams and bathrooms will enforce CDC health guidelines and sanitize regularly by attendants • Staggered vehicle parking to ensure social distancing • EMT staff will be notified of any guest with apparent signs of COVID-19 and protocol will be followed In order to keep guests safe, Florida Strawberry Festival President Paul Davis also announced that there will not be headline entertainment this year. Quoted from the event’s website, Davis stated, “This year, we believe it is in the best interest of everyone, guests and entertainers, to not have patrons sitting shoulder to shoulder for an extended period of time.” So, how are this year’s food and beverage vendors planning to protect festival attendees? Jerry Price of Fiske Fries, famous for their freshcut Idaho potato French fries for 82 years running, says he’s following all of the CDC protocols for food handling and safety during the pandemic. From masks and gloves worn by employees, to red tape to guide waiting customers for social distancing and contact tracing for employees, guest safety is a priority for Fiske Fries. “We’ll even have hand sanitizing units stationed near our stand, just as an added precaution for our customers,” Price says. Many other COVID-conscious vendors will be in attendance, including
Chocolate Strawberry Express, featuring just what you would expect from the name: deliciously dipped fresh strawberries and other goodies. Spivey’s Southern Grill will also join the lineup, offering classic fair bites, as well as Carousel Foods, famous for their one-of-a-kind burgers that are sure to make your festival experience even better. Gates are open from 10 am to 10 pm daily during the festival. Gate admission is $10 for adults 13 years old and up, $5 for children 6 to 12 years old, and children 5 and below are free with an adult admission. Thursdays, March 4 and March 11, are Senior Citizens Day presented by Humana. Seniors 60 years old and up get $8 admission all day. Special concerts will be held at 10:30 am, along with a Senior Drawing at 11:45 am. For more information and the latest updates, visit FLstrawberryfestival.

Dear Ms. Price, After my father passed away last year, my mother became fixated with her nextdoor neighbors. It started off with stories of them “stealing” her internet and her newspaper, and knocking on her door and running away. I believed her for some time, but when I came for a visit last month, I was shocked to find that the house next door was vacant. Her neighbors moved away months ago. She insists these acts are still happening, but I didn’t witness anything suspicious. My husband says to let it go and chalk it up to her age. What do you think? Thank you, Gaslighting In Pass-a-Grille
Dear “Gaslighting,” Your husband is probably correct and age might be one factor. However, I don’t agree to, “let it go.” Your mother needs to see her doctor immediately for a neurological examination. You may need to make arrangements to speak with her doctor before the appointment to privately fill them in on your observations. Great care should be taken to handle this situation with discretion and kindness. Good luck to you. P.S. I love Pass-a-Grille! Dear Ms. Price, For the last 10 years, my wife and I have been saving money for a down payment on a house. We’ve given up vacations and sacrificed for our dream of owning a home and starting a family. We both make about the same

amount of money, so the contributions were about half and half. A month ago, the perfect home went on the market. When I sat down to discuss it with my wife, I found out that she has been lying to me and that she used our savings for the business (a deli) that she co-owns with her sister. She broke down crying, and admitted that because of the COVID-19 shut down, using our money was her last resort. Now, the deli is closed permanently and she has no way to pay back the money. It’s not just the savings and the loss of the house, it’s the fact that she lied to me about it for so long. I don’t know if I can ever trust her again. Home Alone Dear “Home,” The foundation of any partnership, especially marriage, is trust. When that trust is destroyed, it’s difficult, if not impossible, to rebuild. My advice is to immediately go to a marriage therapist if you want to save it. Don’t “white knuckle” the situation and try to make it work without professional help. Make sure to have separate accounts and finances in the future.

The Second-Most Famous Smile BY RANDAL C. HILL Though you may not know it, Harvey Ball has had an impact on your life. Harvey Ross Ball was born in July 1921 in Worcester, Massachusetts, one of six children. After graduating from Worcester South High School, he became an apprentice to a local sign painter and later studied fine art at the Worcester Art Museum School. Following World War II, he worked for a local advertising firm until 1959, when he started his own advertising business.
nothing from the design either. Ball’s son, Charles, always maintained that his dad never regretted not registering the copyright. Charles claimed that Harvey wasn’t motivated much by money. Ball did, however, have an incentive other than cash. In 1999, he founded
In 1963, a phone call from a Worcester client, The State Mutual Life Assurance Company, changed Ball’s life—and in time added to the popular culture of America and many countries around the globe. The insurance outfit had recently experienced a hostile takeover merger with an out-of-town competitor, and employee morale was low and sinking lower. Could Harvey come up with some kind of quirky design that would be fun to look at and consequently lift spirits around the office? Ten minutes later, he had created a bright yellow circle with black oval eyes, with the one on the right slightly larger than the one on the left and a creased, slightly off-center smile, the right side being a bit higher and a bit thicker than on the left. Ball was paid $45—about Image from The Domestic Botanist $350 today—for his efforts. The State Mutual folks produced and handed out 100 Smiley pins to its employees, the goal being to encourage workers to smile while doing humdrum tasks around the office such as chatting on the phone with customers. Smiley buttons later became so popular with the general public that they were eventually being ordered in lots of 10,000 each. By 1971, more than 50 million Smiley buttons had been produced. Ball’s creation had become recognized around the world as an American icon. So, was Harvey able to retire early, purchase a yacht and sail off to retire in a beachfront villa on a tropical island? Well, actually, no. He never applied for a trademark or a copyright of the Smiley Face, and State Mutual made Lifestyles After 50 • February 2021 • 10
the World Smile Foundation, a nonprofit charitable trust that supports children’s causes. The outfit now licenses Smileys and runs World Smile Day, an event celebrated on the first Friday in October each year. It’s a day that emphasizes the slogans, “Do an act of kindness,” and, “Help one person smile.” Harvey’s Smiley is now said to incorporate the most famous grin since the Mona Lisa’s. Footnote: When the Vietnam War was raging during the 1970s, businessmen brothers Bernard and Murray Spain decided to make buttons displaying Ball’s creation, but added “Have a Nice Day,” on each disc. The Spains raked in a healthy profit with sales of 50 million discs. Yep, the pair had first copyrighted that four-word phrase.

From DIFF Facebook page
Dunedin International Film Festival BY JAN LARRAINE COX
The Dunedin International Film Festival (DIFF) embarked on its third successful event with a tantalizing array of diverse film entries from America and other countries around the world. The seven-day festival ran from January 11 to January 17 at these inviting venues: Fenway Hotel’s socially distanced theater and the outdoor locations of Highlander Park, Soggy Bottom Brewery and Pisces Sushi & Global Bistro, all in downtown Dunedin. For the past three years, The Dunedin International Film Festival has been known for creating outdoor movie theaters in boutique breweries as platforms for filmmakers to share their original content with the Florida filmmaker community. The DIFF Festival accepts films of all lengths in the following categories: animation, comedy, documentary feature, documentary short, foreign/ subtitles, horror, narrative feature, narrative short and science fiction. The international flavor of the film entries provided a sort of trip to other lands, while we are awaiting an end to the pandemic. Nearby neighbor Cuba was well represented. For example, narrative feature “Mambo Man,” directed by Mo Fini and Edesio Alejandro, is the story of a Cuban farmer and music promoter who gambles everything on a deal that appears too good to be true. With intoxicating music by Buena Vista Club artists, it is based on a true story and filmed in the exotic countryside outside Havana. Lifestyles After 50 • February 2021 • 12
Also set in Cuba is Carmelo Raneri’s film “Alamarilove.” Alamar is a suburban barrio located to the east of Havanna. Artists there reveal the reality of their lives, in a community context in which poems, graffiti and HipHop music are blended in a dialogue of peace and friendship. The protagonists share their ideas and dreams, mixed with a sense of belonging to their birthplace. This documentary feature includes President Obama’s historic trip to Cuba, as well as a Havana concert which included The Rolling Stones performing “Satisfaction.” Moving to Japan, we find the documentary feature “Bicentennial Bonsai: Emissaries of Peace,” directed by Paul Awad and Kathryn O’Sullivan. In 1975, 30 years after the United States and Japan were at war, Japan gave 53 priceless bonsai trees to the U.S., in honor of the U.S. Bicentennial. Some of these bonsai are several hundred years old, and one had survived the bombing of Hiroshima. This documentary feature highlights the historic bonsai gift, and includes rare footage and interviews, demonstrating how we can recover our shared humanity and move toward healing. “Loving Mona,” directed by Terry Katz, is another documentary feature that points the way toward redemption. It’s a heartwarming story about a dog and her “boy” which illustrates how dogs change lives. We experience the bond between Katz and his rescue dog, Mona. And we take a domestic trip into the lives of other owners who have been rewarded by adopting a rescue dog. We come to realize how the unconditional love of a rescue dog can overcome the isolation of pandemic times.
CREATIVE CORNER “Awaken or Else” By: Alan Fisher
We’re headed for winter Just as sure as can be We can’t stop the seasons That’s plain to see
We either awaken now Or continue to suffer We either let go now Or things will get tougher
And so with all Unrelated events There is a process unfolding We can’t sit on the fence
There’s a whole world of love When your consciousness changes Beyond human nature There are infinite ranges

A Love Story BY JIM LEINER
“Marriage isn’t for some folks. I didn’t think I’d ever marry.” That’s what Ethel Mary McKee said to me on the day of her wedding – “Just didn’t meet the right man. I don’t have any regrets about waiting.” Now that might not seem strange to you, I’m sure you’ve heard it before, but you see, Ethel was not your everyday bride. Her wedding was held the day after her 88th birthday. Her good friend proposed to her, and she decided, “Why not, he’s a nice man.” Ethel Mary McKee was a fixture in my teenage years. Born in Canada, she came to the United States when Woodrow Wilson was President. I met her when she was the head cook at Nyack High School. My mother worked in the cafeteria as the cashier back in the 50s and 60s. To say she had a strange sense of humor would be an understatement. She enjoyed having fun, and was always looking for the humor in any situation. If she didn’t see the humor, she started it. Kimball Weaver, a man 12 years her junior finally won her heart. Ethel and Kimball met in 1973 when they were both living in Depew Manor Senior Apartments. She cared for him and his fourth wife, Margaret, until she passed away early in 1978. My dad was also living in Depew Manor, giving me the opportunity to keep in touch with Ethel. As she aged, she decided to give up her apartment, and move over to the county infirmary in Pomona. When Kimball’s wife passed away, he also moved there.
I was surprised to receive a call from one of the staff at the infirmary requesting Pop’s and my attendance at the marriage of Ethel Mary McKee and Kimball Weaver on May 31, 1978, in the Chapel at the infirmary. We had to go, I knew my mother, if she was living, would insist, and Pop added – “This I’ve gotta see!” In the following weeks after the ceremony, I would see Ethel pushing her new husband around the courtyard enjoying the spring sun. They seemed just like any other newlyweds. “You don’t know how happy I am,” he told me one afternoon. “As long as I’m alive, she’s never going to want for nothing.” Ethel answered with her usual sense of humor. “I’m trying to get him on a diet so he won’t be so hard to push!” Sunday, June 11 when Kimball suffered a massive stoke. After Pop called me, I drove Ethel to the hospital where around noontime she talked to her husband. She said to him, “Look at all these nice young girls taking care of you.” He smiled at her and their marriage was over in the next minute. A couple of days later we shared a cup of coffee in Pops’ apartment, Ethel turned to me and said, “You know, I don’t think I’ll marry again, never find a guy as great as Kimball.” Their marriage and love lasted two short weeks, but every time I ran into Ethel in the next year, she was smiling more than I ever remember.

newshowerdeal.com/after50 | 855-656-0287 “Your Song” by Elton John BY: RANDAL C. HILL It was a magical moment for Elton John and Bernie Taupin when they fully realized the potential that had blossomed in their professional partnership. As Bernie once explained, “‘Your Song’ was one of the first songs we wrote when we really got locked into writing and when we had really honed our craft.” And it all began one morning in 1969 at John’s parents’ London apartment, when Taupin scribbled the words to the future classic on a grubby sheet of lined exercise paper that had tea stains on it. At one time, Reginald Dwight—born in London in 1947—was just another piano-playing teenager hungry for a show-biz break. By the mid-1960s, he and some pals were jamming in a band called Bluesology. Included among the musicians were sax player Elton Dean and singer John Baldry—the inspiration for Dwight’s future stage moniker. Reg eventually left the group and later answered an ad from London’s Liberty Records, which had announced auditions for songwriters. He wasn’t hired—Dwight could easily create melodies but choked when it came to writing lyrics. On that fateful day in Liberty’s office, though, he met another creative hopeful, 17-year-old Bernie Taupin. A schooldropout farm worker without music-making skills, he could write poetry—and song lyrics—thanks to constant encouragement from his Lifestyles After 50 • February 2021 • 16
literature-loving mother. Now calling himself Elton John, he and Taupin began working together, with Bernie Taupin and Elton John. Bernie penning sets of lyrics and Elton From Biography.com creating piano melodies appropriate to the words. If nothing came to fruition within a few minutes, John would summarily toss Taupin’s attempt into the trash and move on to the next offering. Elton remembers his reaction when he first considered the words to “Your Song”: “I sat down at the piano and looked at it, going, ‘Oh, my God, this is such a great lyric, I can’t [mess] this one up.’ It came out in about 20 minutes, and when I was done, I called him in. And we both knew.” Elton eventually signed with Britain’s DJM Records label and in 1969 recorded the LP Empty Sky. It went nowhere, but his second album, Elton John, the next year featured “Your Song” and thus held the key to success. Haunting and delicate, the tune worked its way into the public consciousness, and in January 1971, it reached America’s Top 10 list on the Uni Records label.
A Valentine to My Marriage We recently celebrated our 40th wedding anniversary. Given our respective ages, a forty-year marriage might seem nothing to pop a cork about. Many of our cohorts, some of whom met in first grade struggling over Dick and Jane readers, are boasting marriages of nearly 60 years.

Truth be told, we’ve actually been married longer than 40 years. Before we met, each of us had 15 years of conjugal life with another spouse. So, in answer to the question, “How long have I been married?” I believe that 55 years is an honest response. Even convicted felons get credit for time served. The symbol for a 40-year marriage is the ruby. It is said to represent, “... an inner flame of a strong marriage that has lasted 40 years and is still burning.” What a relief to learn that my inner flame was ignited by romance and not indigestion! During our years of marriage, we’ve helped each other raise five children, six dogs and have lived to enjoy five beautiful grandchildren. We’ve confronted the turmoil and blessings of mix-and-match households, and have more than earned our T-shirts which read, “I Survived a Blended Family.” We’ve managed several moves and home renovations, the stress of which often had us teetering on the brink. I mean, what can be more detrimental to a relationship than arguing over where to place a light fixture? We’ve weathered several career changes, resulting in periods of economic uncertainty, each of which just brought us that much closer. Reflecting on our marriage, I’m very grateful. No one could have been more supportive to me in my second act as a humor writer. Additionally, I’m grateful that living with him has provided me with so much delicious fodder for my essays. On at least a dozen occasions, I’ve poked fun at our marital bliss. Whether it’s the fact that he clenches the TV remote as if it was a life line or argues with me about the best way to slice a bagel, a longterm marriage has proven to be an endless source of material. And he has been a wonderful sport. Do I dare look back and ask the inevitable question: would I do it all over again? I respond with certainty “yes.” We may not reach the 60-year mark like some of our friends, but we’re sure not done yet. And please, my dear, don’t ever be perfect. I have many more essays yet to write! Susan's newest book, "How to Complain When There's Nothing to Complain About," is available at Amazon.com and other online book sellers. ROUGH, ROUGH!
In early December, we were working a local farmer’s market where my wife sells hand-crafted jewelry. While she was talking to another vendor, she called me over to where she was being shown photos of six puppies needing homes. Before being asked, I said “NO!” I had to repeat myself several times. The presenter questioned me “Why not?” I answered, “Because I will be the one having to walk it, and clean up after it, just like our poodle.” Joy: “Please!” Me: “No!” This volley continued until I said, “Lemme think about it for a while.” Five hours later, she asked again, adding some reasoning: “I’m still recovering from surgery. Marcel’s too strong for me to walk. I can walk this one alongside the two of you and get my own exercise, since the doctor said I must lose weight.”

Although I went and let the little girl get into my heart, we agreed to find 68 her a better home, since neither Marcell or the two cats were adjusting well. By amazing coincidence, the daughter-of-our-heart in Tampa mentioned in passing that she’d been wanting and praying for a dog. Joy asked, “Any particular breed?” “A husky!” A prayer was answered—two prayers! Michael now walks from one end of the house to the other without looking down. For Your Health: American Heart Month By Rebecca Fending When people think of their health, they tend to think of surface-level issues such as weight or other physical imperfections. However, our internal health often goes unnoticed until something goes horribly wrong. The age-old precautionary advice of, “Healthy diet and exercise!” isn’t just your doctor looking to lecture you for fun. A balanced daily diet of each food group and light exercise is what keeps your heart healthy, strong and reliable throughout your life. And while aerobics and a leafy salad are a great way to thank your body for keeping you going, the act of laughing is a great way to keep your heart in shape while lifting your spirits. According to Providence.org, the difference between the number of times an adult laughs during the day versus a child is astounding. A child lets out a giggle anywhere between 300 to 400 times each day. An adult only laughs a measly 26 times on average throughout the day. Twenty-six. This difference likely has something to do with a child’s blissful ignorance for the worldly pressures around them, something adults can’t help but worry about given our grownup duties and responsibilities. But what does laughing do for our bodies?
Letting out a chuckle directly helps your heart by relieving pressures such as stress and tension through lowered blood pressure, according to HenryFord.com. The act of laughing increases circulation which helps relax your muscles and mind at the same time, as well as encourages your heart to beat at a steady pace. Laughing also encourages your body to take deeper breaths. This helps oxygenate the blood as it circulates within the body, delivering more oxygen to important bits such as the brain and extremities. Laughing indirectly helps keep the heart healthy through weight regulation. The leading causes of weight gain are a mix between over consumption and lack of exercise, as well as stress. When the body is stressed, it produces a stress hormone called cortisol. This hormone acts as stimulant for insulin production, creating a craving for sugary sweets and general appetite even when you aren’t hungry. As laughing helps reduce stress and thereby cortisol levels in the body, it helps keep weight gain at bay. Plus, laughing burns calories! So, if you’re in need of a laugh for your heart or your spirit, be sure to read Michael Wright’s column, “The Wright Stuff,” or Susan Goldfein’s self-titled column in print or online at LifestylesAfter50.com to kickstart your month with a chuckle. Minari
BY RANDAL C. HILL
When the Yi family arrives at their new residence in Arkansas, Jacob Yi’s wife Monica is momentarily horror-stricken. The house before her—a rundown older trailer set upon cinder blocks in an isolated field— is far removed from the tidy dream house she has envisioned. It’s the first of many adjustments that lie Image from Variety.com ahead for the immigrant Koreans about to begin a new life—for the second time—in an unfamiliar culture. The richly textured Minari reframes the American dream through a foreign lens. Korean-American screenwriter-director Lee Isaac Chung offers reflections here of his own Arkansas childhood with tenderness and warmth—and without ignoring the raw and painful moments that accompany a fish-out-of-water family adjusting to rural Southern life during the 1980s.
Jacob Yi (Steven Yeun), his wife, Monica (Yeri Han) and their children Anne (Noel Kate Cho) and David (Alan S. Kim) have left their home in costly California for a better, more affordable existence elsewhere. Jacob and Monica have wearied of
their tedious jobs as chicken sexers, in which they check the gender of thousands of chicks per day.
The Yis have purchased a plot of land and a house in cheaper Arkansas, and it is there that Jacob hopes to start a meaningful, independent life by growing and selling Korean fruits and vegetables on his five-acre property. But to him there’s something more important than earning a profit: how he appears to his children. “They need to see me succeed at something for once.” The Yi couple struggles with marital problems, some of which are exacerbated when the source of many dust-ups, Monica’s mother, Soonja (Yuh Jung Youn), moves in with them. We soon learn that the unpredictable woman is a practical joker who is loving but lewd, and wise but weird. She doesn’t read, write or, to young David’s disappointment, even bake cookies.
David’s litany of gripes includes that she’s, “not like a real grandma.” She wears men’s underwear and she “smells like Korea.” When David and Soonja are forced to share a cramped room in the trailer, though, they gradually warm to each other and eventually become close—as family members should. Chung’s movie debuted at the Sundance Film Festival in 2020 and proved to be an audience favorite, evoking laughter and tears and earning a standing ovation. After a tumultuous 2020, perhaps the gentle, uplifting Minari—a Korean word that describes a hardy herb that thrives if given adequate time—is just what we need right now.

Southwest Florida Reading Festival Will Be Virtual This Year Information from Lee County Government Press Release The 2021 Southwest Florida Reading Festival will be a virtual event. Nearly 30 acclaimed and bestselling authors are scheduled to give virtual presentations and participate in live, interactive “meet and greets” on the event’s website from March 1 through 13. All of the virtual author presentations will be recorded for on-demand viewing throughout March. The event website will be available the week of February 22nd so that attendees can become familiar with the new, online Event Hub platform. This year’s attendees can enjoy activities for all ages, including an online reading challenge, grab-and-go crafts and online STEAM contests that will challenge participants to create masterpieces with LEGO and art materials. Just like previous years, the festival will provide each participating child and teenager with a free book. This year, the free books will be distributed in age-appropriate, grab-and-go craft bags, which can be requested from any of the 13 Lee County Library System branches starting February 22, while supplies last. “We are pleased to be able to continue Reading Festival traditions in a new and engaging online format this year,” states event coordinator Melissa Baker. “The expanded timeline will allow all of our attendees to enjoy the content from wherever they are and at their own pace.” The lineup of award-winning authors that are scheduled to attend includes adult authors Jennifer Chiaverini, Gregg Hurwitz, Jayne Ann Krentz and Kyle Mills, as well as youth and teen authors JC Cervantes, Greg Pizzoli, Julie Berry and Ryan LaSala. The complete list of authors can be found at www. ReadFest.org. Another feature that will be available for the online festival is the return of the Local Author Marketplace, which, for years, was a hallmark of the Southwest Florida Reading Festival. A select few of approved authors will be granted virtual vendor booths on the website to promote and sell their work and engage with attendees using video and text chat. The Southwest Florida Reading Festival is free and community-supported through donations, sponsorships, and grants. To help ensure the continuation of this free event, visit www.ReadFest.org to make a donation. More information can also be found on their website. Lifestyles After 50 • February 2021 • 23
