On January 13, 2013, Lot 5037 rolled smoothly onto center stage at the prestigious Barrett-Jackson car auction in Scottsdale, Arizona. The sleek, low-slung vehicle, owned by California auto customizer George Barris, glistened like a black diamond under the lights. Moments later, furious bidding erupted among the well-heeled. After 13 minutes, it was all over, the buyer elated, the audience stunned. TV’s original Batmobile had found a new home. --During the Fifties, American car companies held annual auto shows, where attendees were often enthralled by what the factory folks called “concept cars.” Such boldly designed vehicles were constructed to showcase new styling and technology but were never offered for sale.

In August 1965, two producers from the forthcoming TV show Batman approached another California car customizer, Dean Jeffries, about building a Batmobile for the program. “American Pie” by Don McLean BY: RANDAL C. HILL In the early-morning hours of February 3, 1959, a small private plane slammed into a cornfield in north-central Iowa. The accident took the life of pop-music superstar Charles Hardin “Buddy” Holly, age 22. Fellow touring stars Ritchie Valens, the Big Bopper and the pilot, Roger Peterson, died also in the still-unexplained catastrophe. While millions of teenage rock fans were undoubtedly devastated by the news, few probably felt more pain than 13-year-old Don McLean, who learned of Holly’s demise from headlines in the newspapers he delivered. “Buddy Holly was the first and last person I ever really idolized as a kid,” McLean has said. The loss that he felt would inspire his multi-million-selling touchstone that, to him, lamented “the day the music died.” McLean, born in New York in 1945, dropped out of Villanova University to follow his muse as a folk singer/songwriter. Mentored by pal Pete Seeger, McLean drifted around the East Coast club circuit for years but never became a headliner. He spent two years creating Tapestry, a 1969 album of original tunes. A small label—Mediarts—released it to good reviews but few sales. Mediarts was eventually absorbed by United Artists Records, a major company that had the clout to aggressively promote McLean’s second LP, the 1971 multi-platinum-selling American Pie. As with many complex poems, deeper meanings lay beneath the surface of “American Pie.” Its dense, often confusing lyrics grow increasingly more somber as McLean’s tune unfolds amid religious references and enigmatic characters that begged

McLean has always divulged little about “American Pie,” but it’s easy to see that he bemoans the loss of the carefree times of his generation. To Don, America was moving inexorably toward adverse times, due in part to inner-city riots, Vietnam war protests and political assassinations. “In ‘American Pie,’ things are headed in the wrong direction…becoming less idyllic…,” he once confessed. “It is a morality song, in a sense.” On April 7, 2015, in Christie’s auction room in New York, McLean’s 16-page working manuscript for “American Pie” sold for an astounding $1.2 million. It became the third-highest price ever paid for an American literary item. The normally closed-mouthed McLean has often used a wry retort when people press him too hard about his song’s meaning: “It means,” he would answer, “I don’t ever have to work again if I don’t want to.”

“Eightysomethings: A Practical Guide to Letting Go, Aging Well, and Finding Unexpected Happiness” BY KATHY A. MEGYERI Author Katharine Esty is a social psychologist, practicing psychotherapist, widow, mother of four sons and a grandmother. A therapist for 30 years, she has counseled thousands and has written many non-fiction books, but has now released a self-help book for those of us in our 80s. When she turned 80, Esty realized that others her age comprised the fastest growing cohort in America, but there was not a single self-help book written for them or a guide for middle-aged children (like her sons) on how to deal with aging parents. She set out to examine if the negative stereotypes of failing health and diminished vitality were true, and then she wanted to see if people in their 80s (like her) have lessons for the rest of us. Esty interviewed 128 people in their 80s and 26 of their adult children.

She looked at the ways they dealt with life’s transitions by examining their health, grandchildren, living arrangements, finances, sex and intimacy, and views of death. From her interviews, which were shockingly honest, she saw first-hand “upside down parents” when children have to become the parents. This book also functions as a guide for adult children to help them as their parents enter the last stage of life. She offers practical advice and conversation starters, so needed when commonalities often decrease as children live away and time together is lessened. Instead of writing in generalities, the book’s anecdotes and observations are believable and funny, while the offered recommendations are practical and smart. At the end of each chapter, the conversation starters and tips for families for those over 80 would be most valuable for students studying gerontology and caregivers who oftentimes have to treat both children and parents as they navigate new territory in life’s last journey. Esty, as a therapist, is able to see the big picture of this aging cohort, weave individual stories and vignettes, and bring in her personal insight and her professional career in therapy to lessen the dread of growing old. Instead, she directs us to new and varied ways to find unexpected happiness. Esty’s final piece of advice is to “do what you enjoy; live your life from the heart rather than from the head.” No wonder the book won The American Book Fest Best Book Award in Health: Aging/50+.

DEVELOPING MINDFULNESS THIS YEAR BY JAN LARRAINE COX May I be safe and protected. May I be free of mental suffering or distress. May I be able to live in this world happily, peacefully, joyfully, with ease… These are loving phrases of kindness for yourself that you can then visualize for all beings of the world: May all beings be happy; may all beings be healthy and strong. Followed by deep and cleansing breaths, you are on your way to a mindful day. Breathe deeply, in through your nose for a count of five, then out through your nose for a count of five, inhaling and expelling as much air as you can. Maintain that rhythm for 10 minutes. Mindfulness can balance our mind and feelings as we fully focus on whatever we are doing in the present moment: cooking, cleaning, reading, watching the waves hit the edge of the beach, watching the seagulls swoop. Our attention is directed at what we are doing instead of all the other things we could or should be doing. If those thoughts naturally arise, let them pass by without following them to take your attention. We can value silence for more than the absence of sound, but for the opportunity to release emotions so they don’t control us—free to be fully aware of the moment and appreciate the details of the present, responding thoughtfully, rather than automatically, to life’s events. Author Wendy Hobson writes there are specific personal advantages to stilling the mind in regular meditation: enjoyment of your own life moment by moment; further understanding your own strengths and weaknesses; ability to forgive yourself and others for mistakes; development of deep listening and observation, rather than simply hearing. Hobson points out that studies show the seat of memory, the hippocampus, becomes denser in those who meditate. Simultaneously, there is a decrease in the density of the amygdala, which is the source of fear and overstress. Studies also show that

meditation improves the brain’s ability to protect against age-related memory loss, for a mere 10-minute investment per day. W hat Is That S m e ll ??!! By Rochelle Mester, DVM You may have noticed that sometimes your dog scoots around the carpet or licks his hind-end A LOT. You may also have noticed a foul odor from that area. These are all signs that your dog may need his anal glands expressed. Anal glands are two small glands located just on the inside of your dog’s anus. They secrete a thin, brown, smelly (think “fish-like”) fluid and are typically used in the wild for scent marking, or during times of stress/defense. Most of the time, animals can naturally express them while defecating, but sometimes the glands become clogged and the material inside cannot come out. In these cases, your dog will need to have his anal glands expressed by a veterinary professional. The veterinarian or technician will placed a gloved finger just inside the anus and apply light pressure to both sides to express the contents of the sac.

At this stage, your dog will need treatment from a veterinarian to clean and flush the area, sometimes with sedation since it’s a sensitive area, and will go home with antibiotics, pain medication and an e-collar. Most anal gland infections resolve with treatment. If a dog has repeated anal gland issues or infections despite frequent expressions, then an anal gland sacculectomy may be recommended. This is a surgery to remove to anal glands. If your dog is prone to frequent anal gland issues, coming in for routine anal gland expressions may help. Every dog is different so there is no set rule of thumb regarding how often this needs to be done. Also, feeding a high fiber diet will help. If you have any other questions about your dog’s anal gland health, your veterinary team will always be there to help!

Sometimes, anal glands aren’t able to be expressed and therefore become impacted. If not noticed immediately, the anal gland can form an abscess and can rupture. child law, a child born or adopted after the date their parent’s Will was executed has the right to receive a share of the deceased parent’s estate equal to what that child would have been entitled to had the parent died without having made a valid Will. Clearly this is a unique situation which rarely occurs.

Rarely does a week goes by that a misinformed client requests that I put a clause in their yet to be prepared Will to the effect that their out of favour child receive only one dollar upon his or her parent’s death. The rationale behind this slap in the face bequest, besides the obvious message it conveys, is that it somehow magically prevents the unfortunate child from contesting the Will. This is a myth. First of all, it should be understood that with the exception of certain very specific situations involving homestead real property owned by a decedent who is survived by minor children, a parent who is a Florida resident has absolutely no legal obligation to leave his or her child anything, and certainly not one dollar. Perhaps the confusion regarding a parent’s post mortem obligation to their children arises from the fact that many jurisdictions, including Florida, recognize the concept of entitlement by a “pretermitted” child. According to the Tampa Bay Times, Hine came up with the concept for the museum’s new book, Wishes from The Dalí Museum Wish Tree. Out Thursday, it contains 250 of the 20,000 or so recorded wishes that visitors have written on brightly colored admission wristbands and tied to the Florida ficus in the museum’s Avant-garden over the last decade. The four chapters of the book contain aspirations ranging from fun (I hope to one day grow a mustache as epic as Dalí’s) to heartbreaking (I wish my dad accepted me.)

In life’s second stage, we’re the ones issuing the anti-dawdling warnings to our kids, as we rush them out the door in the morning and ourselves off to work. After school, there are appointments, games, lessons and rushing here and there with no time to spare. Then the day finally comes when your last child leaves home for Punxsutawney State Junior College (you tried your best) and the color of your life begins to change from fire-engine red to salmon. Not quite a peaceful pink, because you’re still rushing yourself out the door each morning to get to work on time. And the dog, who requires walking, remains at home. Eventually, you cross the magic threshold. You’re a person of a certain age. You’re a retired person of a certain age. Life finally takes on a pinkish glow. Not exactly my personal favorite color, but pink is associated with calm. So, congratulations, you have earned the right to dawdle. As for me, I plan to do my best dawdling at breakfast. I’ve never been a morning person, and frankly don’t understand people who are. I’ve always relied on that first cup of coffee to get my engine revved, whereas morning people act like they had a caffeine drip inserted in their veins at bedtime. But now, my mornings will be luxurious. My life will finally be in lockstep with my circadian rhythm, which doesn’t awaken until 10 am. I will take that second cup of coffee, watch the news on TV, even do a crossword. Maybe two. How much time has elapsed? An hour? The beauty is, it doesn’t matter. No early morning appointments, please. No breakfast dates, no golf games. I plan to be way too busy dawdling and loving every precious second. But at some point, I’ll spring into action. There’s that little cricket who sits on my shoulder and warns me that my dawdling will turn into sloth if I spend one minute more in my bathrobe.

Asian Lettuce Wraps There’s no time like the New Year to get a jump on healthy recipe ideas. For some, adopting a healthier diet as a New Year’s resolution means cutting out carbs, sugar or including more

whole, fresh foods on their plates. Since we’re currently at the height of lettuce season in Florida, these Asian lettuce wraps are a tasty, easy fix for adding more veggies to your daily diet.

Ingredients: For the filling:

• 1 tablespoon peanut butter

• 1 pound of ground chicken or turkey

• 1 tablespoon honey

• 1 tablespoon canola oil

• 2 teaspoons crushed red pepper

• ½ medium-sized yellow onion, diced

• ½ teaspoon garlic powder

• 8 ounces of water chestnuts, drained and minced

• ¼ teaspoon powdered ginger

For the sauce: • 3 tablespoons soy sauce • 3 tablespoons hoisin sauce

Serving: • Romaine or butter lettuce for wrapping • Crushed peanuts and/or sesame seeds for garnish

• 1 tablespoon sesame oil • 1 tablespoon rice vinegar

4. Add water chestnuts and cook for about 5 minutes.

2. Heat oil in a frying pan. Once hot, add ground meat.

5. Add sauce and simmer on low heat until the solids are evenly coated and everything is heated through.

3. Cook until some pieces are starting to brown. Add onion and cook for 5 minutes or until the onion is translucent.

Finding Joy in Exercise As we ring in another New Year and enjoy our mild Florida winter, it is a good time to reassess the status of our exercise enjoyment. As the seasons change, so should your fitness activities. Sticking to a rigid exercise routine regardless of how your body feels can tank your mood, cause physical malaise and plateau results. The physical needs of your body not only change over time, but they also change on a daily basis. Learning how to adapt your fitness pursuits to your daily barometer is referred to as exercising intuitively. Embracing a more intuitive approach to exercise can increase joy and effectiveness in your fitness pursuits. People often have an “all or nothing” approach to exercise. They join a gym, establish a routine and then weaponize that routine as a punitive countermeasure to overindulgence. Over time, this militant approach will sap joy, causing interest to wane and results to plateau. As exercise adherence falters, angst and guilt increase. This scenario can be avoided by developing a healthier attitude towards exercise and embracing all forms of physical activity as a viable workout. Taking this approach would provide your body with essential variety, recovery and injury prevention.

Maybe you need to make a cup of coffee, stay home and do some gentle stretching, yoga or meditation. Perhaps a walk outside in the sunshine might be a better choice. Exercising intuitively is about interpreting what your body, mind and soul need on that day. It doesn’t matter what you choose. All exercise is good as long as you honor your body. Take an intuitive leap of faith and stop stressing and obsessing about sticking to your planned routine. Instead, perform a mental body scan and choose an exercise activity that reflects your mood, stamina and physicality. Shifting away from a mentality of “must do” to a mindset of “can do” will do wonders for restoring joy into your exercise routine. Happy New Year! A new action thriller with the intriguing title of The 355 opens this month. The inspiration for the film’s title goes back to the Revolutionary War era when 355 was the code number assigned to the first female spy—a woman unnamed (and obviously unappreciated) by historians to this day. Today’s The 355 features a band of women spies, and each is a potential Dirty Harry in a dress. Together, these plucky ladies embark on a mission to locate and dispatch evil mercenaries who have secured a lethal, top-secret weapon.

For the women actors, rehearsals included hours of combat training and learning to fight in feminine attire, including high heels—something that male action performers never have to be concerned about. “My goals and dreams for The 355 are that we just accept the fact that women are awesome and tough,” Chastain remarks. “I’m excited for society to start acknowledging what’s happening in our world.” The 355 is written, produced and directed by Simon Kinberg, who is best known for the X-Men movies.
