Not just tacit
Summer Sun, Sand and Fun
If you’re anything like me, you may have a love-hate relationship with summer. Most of that love-hate revolves around the sun, as we all quite literally do. I’ve always been ridiculously prone to sunburns that never result in a tan, just freckles. However, that never seems to stop me from subjecting myself to the warm rays of the season.
There’s something about summertime that’s irresistible. Maybe it’s the warm weather that gets everyone excited and planning for trips of various kinds, or maybe it’s the fact that the days elongate thanks to extended daylight. Whatever it is that makes this time of year so intoxicating, everyone can feel it. Moods lift, and the drive to get out and explore takes over, making the warmest time of year the busiest time of year.
That being said, there are countless things to do during this time of year. You can always do your tried-and-true beach day, a visit to the many theme parks or a walk in your local park, but what about some outside-of-the-box ideas? Here are some things to do when the days are just too hot to enjoy being outside, when you’ve run out of ideas or when grandchildren are visiting:
HEATLESS SNACKS
If you can’t take the heat, step into the kitchen. For the days when it’s just too hot to be outside, it may be fun to experiment in the kitchen with a no-heat recipe. Homemade popsicles, no-bake desserts or even just freezing fresh fruit can be a fun but tasty time indoors. Bust out the arts and crafts, such as painting, drawing or even redecorating to make the day a fun mix of productive and entertaining.
RIVER SWIMMIN’
Although Florida is mostly surrounded by ocean, it also hosts a number of rivers. Many of these rivers are crystal clear and perfect for swimming, kayaking, canoeing or even just dipping your toes in while bird watching. A great example of this is Crystal River, which allows guests the opportunity to swim with manatees in beautiful, warm water year-round. But in the summer, this is a great way to cool off while also sightsee.
HAPPY GRAMPERS
When it comes to visiting grandchildren, it can be difficult finding new and exciting things to entertain them with each visit. However, if you have a sports or more specifically a baseball fanatic visiting, tickets to a Tampa Bay Rays game could be a great option. With games all summer long, there are plenty of opportunities for your grandkid to get to know their new favorite team.
Sports not their thing, but animals are? There is a plethora of zoos and animalcentric things to do up and down the Gulf coast. Attractions such as ZooTampa, Safari Wilderness in Lakeland and many others all over the state if you’re up for a road trip are great day trip options.
No matter what you have planned this month, take care, and we’ll see you in July!
