REGRET AND REPENT, OR PREPARE AND PREVENT? BY DANIEL KILBURN Rain is falling as you finish securing the patio furniture. In the distance, you can see the chop of the water picking up. It is much more agitated now than it was an hour ago. On the horizon to the south, a wall of water is falling fiercely from the blackened clouds. The wind is marching right at you, drops of water pelting you in the face. Two, maybe three hours till landfall? The Atlantic hurricane season officially starts on June 1. It is a seasonal anxiety monster for the millions of people living on the Atlantic and Gulf Coasts. It can be a life-threatening event if you let it. 2020 was the most active hurricane season on record, and 2021 is projected to have abovenormal activity. Building your family hurricane response plan is simple. You can put together a basic disaster plan in a week. One critical decision will drive all of your planning needs. During the onset of a natural disaster, one of three things will happen: 1. You will need to evacuate your home immediately.

It may not be as easy to sleep now in pandemic times. Traffic noise or loud neighbors may awaken us. We may have jittery nerves. Stress and uncertainty are familiar undercurrents these days, causing some light sleep patterns. But our circadian rhythm, a term often applied to the body’s internal clock, does change as we age. By the time we reach our 60s for example, it is normal to awaken during the night. Doctors are more concerned about individuals who have problems getting to sleep. We hear that caffeine and alcohol can interfere with our sleep. However, a regular bedtime along with a decrease of 2 to 3 degrees in temperature in a darkened room can actually enhance our sleep. There are foods we can eat that also help induce sleep, but eat 2 to 3 hours before bedtime at the latest. Turkey is well known for its tryptophan, which increases sleep-inducing melatonin in the body. Try almonds in a dessert as they contain magnesium that also activates calming melatonin. Follow with a teaspoon chaser of tart cherry juice, which can be diluted with water, if it’s overly tart for your tastebuds. Chamomile tea contains calming epigenia. Passionflower tea also helps combat anxiety. Matt Walker, British scientist and professor of neuroscience and psychology at the University of California, Berkeley, produced a YouTube program called “Sleep is Your Superpower.” As an academic, Walker has concentrated on the impact of sleep on health. He says that reproductive health in both sexes is negatively affected when a person gets less than seven hours of sleep at night. Walker continues that sleep both before and after learning helps to avoid waterlogging the brain, which can prevent absorbing the new information. The famous college all-nighter, under lab research, revealed a 40% deficit in making and retaining new memories without sufficient sleep. Achieve or fail without the shortcut of cramming!

The hippocampus in the brain acts as an information inbox, but sleep deprivation can bounce new information. With a full eight hours of sleep, however, electrodes planted over the head show deep sleep brainwaves act to transfer files at night, while protecting and saving the information from a short term reservoir to a more protected long term one. In the context of aging and dementia, learning and memory start to decline, and a physiological part of aging is that your deep sleep weakens! Disruption of deep sleep even contributes to Alzheimer’s disease occurring says Walker. A potential upside to this revolting development is we can do something about this harmful process. We can improve our sleep quality, very important because a lack of sleep will alter the genetic code and seep into every aspect of life. Consider sleep to be like the elixir of life, Walker says. Prioritize rest: get out of bed until sleepy again in order to sleep well and restore your precious memory function. Simultaneously protect your alertness and cardio and immune systems. Sleep well!

Nearly half of the 43,000 Florida students enrolled at Sarasota County schools participate in free and reduced meal programs, according to The Herald Tribune. In DeSoto County, all of the nearly 5,000 enrolled students rely on these meals during the school year. So when school ends, hunger begins. To try and fill the hunger gap for children who lose access to meals and food pantries at school, All Faith Food Bank—the only food bank and largest hunger relief organization in Sarasota and DeSoto counties—is, once again, launching its Campaign Against Summer Hunger. This annual effort involves behindthe-scenes fundraising to compile a six-figure match and then a community campaign that lasts from April 1 through May 15. The co-chairs for the inaugural campaign in 2014, Veronica Brady and Keith Monda, have returned to spearhead this year’s effort. Lead investors this year are Gulf Coast Community Foundation, Charles & Margery Barancik Foundation, and The Jewish Federation of Sarasota-Manatee. The 2021 goal is to raise $1.6 million and read 35,000 children. “Nobody can look at the long line of cars at food distributions, with kids in those cars, and say they should do anything other than make sure those kids are fed,” Monda said. “They won’t be fed without us. Our responsibility is to make sure every child gets fed, every day.” Donors of all levels are encouraged to consider joining All Faiths Food Bank in fighting child hunger through the Campaign Against Summer Hunger between now and May 15 so that thousands of children who may otherwise go hungry can be helped. Hunger heroes are encouraged to make a donation that will be doubled through a dollar-for-dollar match; start a virtual fundraiser; and tell their family, coworkers, friends and neighbors. “We designed this campaign so that everyone can make a difference,” said Brady. “If you’re someone who has the capacity to be an investor, we’ll gratefully accept your investment each year. For every community member, there’s an opportunity for you to be able to participate in helping make our community better. Frankie and Annette Hit the Beach BY RANDAL C. HILL

Imagine a world where nobody is inconvenienced by school, parents or illness. Where life involves no work schedules, no church services, no money problems. Where nobody riots for civil rights, wreaks inner-city destruction, protests an unjust war, embraces illegal drugs or murders prominent leaders. Welcome to the world of “clean teen” 1960s California beach party movies, whose key elements include eternal sunshine, skimpy swimwear, surfing scenes, nighttime bonfires, teenoriented tunes and the promise of (gasp!) sex. Actually, scratch that last one. While the assurance of lovemaking was indirectly alluded to in movie trailers and on theater posters, no such activity actually materialized on the screen. Leading the charge for these films was AIP—American International Pictures—who can take the credit— or the blame—for several innocuous but highly profitable releases from 1963 to 1965. Omnipresent in AIP’s stories were protagonists who were young, slim and beautiful. (And white, except for some musical guests.) Mostly missing in action were parents, although adults were often featured for comic relief. AIP had once focused on low-budget 50s juvenile delinquent features such as “Hot Rod Gang” and “High School Hellcats.” Then, in 1959, Columbia Pictures’ beach-and-surf bash “Gidget” appeared. Its box-office success inspired the two biggest guns at AIP, Samuel Arkoff and James Nicholson, to order their writers to work up a fun-in-the-sun script that omitted such annoyances as morality lessons and parental involvement. The result was “Beach Party.”

dreamboat Frankie Avalon was paired with voluptuous ex-Disney Mouseketeer Annette Funicello. It was an odd matchup of two attractive, dark-haired Italian-Americans, whereas the quintessential Golden State surf/beach devotee was actually a long-haired blonde of either sex. Dick Dale & the Deltones provided the music in “Beach Party,” with the surf-guitar wizard blasting a highly amplified instrument that was strangely unattached to any visible power source. Music was always an important feature. Later beach party flicks featured such diverse tune-makers as the Beach Boys, Little Stevie Wonder, Nancy Sinatra, James Brown, Lesley Gore, the Righteous Brothers and Little Richard (!). Annette later offered her take on the popularity of the beach party films. “It showed everybody’s dream of what they would like their summer vacation to be, especially those kids who didn’t live near water. Their big dream was to come out to Malibu Beach and to surf and dance on the sand… It also showed that you could have fun without using vulgar language and without explicit sex scenes.” Frankie and Annette remained co-stars together in the later AIP offerings of “Muscle Beach Party,” “Bikini Beach,” “Beach Blanket Bingo,” “How to Stuff a Wild Bikini” and “Dr. Goldfoot and the Bikini Machine.” In 1987, 24 years after “Beach Party” appeared, Avalon, Funicello and Dale came together one last time in the nostalgic “Back to the Beach.” More a satire than another featherweight teen romp, it proved to be like many high-school reunions: fascinating but with a slightly depressing edge confirming that, no, you really can’t go home again.

“Indian Reservation” By Raiders BY: RANDAL C. HILL It was in 1958 when 20-year-old Paul Revere (born Paul Revere Dick) met fellow Idahoan Mark Lindsay, age 16. Paul ran a drive-in restaurant west of Boise. One day, he began chatting with Lindsay when Mark delivered hamburger buns to Revere’s eatery. Both, they discovered, were consumed by a love of rock ‘n’ roll, and each had a yen to become musical professionals. A year later, keyboardist Revere formed the Downbeats, with Lindsay out front with his powerful, emotional voice and teen-idol good looks. Soon, the band changed its name and prepared for fame. In 1963, Paul Revere and the Raiders became the first rock act signed by mainstream Columbia Records, that signing a radical departure from the mainstream Columbia releases of the day by the likes of Tony Bennett, Andy Williams and Doris Day. Decked out in Revolutionary War costumes and powered by the manic energy of Revere—he was often termed “the madman of rock ‘n’ roll”—the quintet became the house band on Dick Clark’s “Where the Action Is,” the mid-1960s “American Bandstand” spinoff. With producer Terry Melcher (Doris Day’s son) at the recording-studio console, Paul Revere and the Raiders cut 13 Top 40 Columbia singles between 1965 and 1969. By the end of the decade, though, the success that had once come so easily seemed to be evaporating. Mark recorded as a solo act and released

a Top 10 Columbia hit called “Arizona.” For all intents and purposes, though, Paul Revere and the Raiders seemed to be Image from Wikipedia destined for the rock-star scrapheap. But, in 1971, “Indian Reservation” (a 1968 minor hit here by British artist Don Fardon) provided Paul’s group—now simply called the Raiders—with a comeback smash. It would become their only disc to reach Number One and would eventually become the biggest-selling 45 to that point in Columbia’s 82year history. “Indian Reservation” chugged along in a downbeat minor key, with a hypnotic drum-and-bass combination powering the tune at a relaxed tempo while Revere’s electronic organ supplied the melody line. The tune’s full title was “Indian Reservation (The Lament of the Cherokee Reservation Indian).” Songwriter John D. Loudermilk had composed it in 1959 as “The Pale Faced Indian” when he blended historical truth and pop-culture myth in a story that mourned the degradation of Native Americans by the white man: They took the whole Cherokee nation/Put us on this reservation Took away our ways of life/The tomahawk and the bow and knife...

“He was attacking the gator’s tail, and then ran away. Joy asked, “Was this on your job description when you signed up?” We concluded that the gator had left and was heading towards nearest lake, so the deputy also left. Hours later, we heard a meow outside, I walked out onto the lanai and “kittykittied” for Jake, he trotted inside, saying “meow, meow”, which is Catspeak for “You should’ve seen me kicking that gator’s butt!” It’s gator mating and nesting season. I regard the past year as a period of hibernation. Hibernation is a time when many animals, not just bears, succumb to a state of minimal activity and metabolic depression, an apt description of how most of us have been living these past 12 months. Before an animal finds a shelter in which to become dormant, it stores energy by having a sufficient amount of food and hydration to sustain itself throughout the period of inactivity. Just as we humans did when we were requested to shelter in place in March 2020. The brave among us raided supermarkets; others used shopping services. We stocked up on canned goods, water and other sustainable food items. We hoarded paper goods and cleaning supplies, and soon there was no more toilet tissue. But unlike other hibernating animals, humans couldn't simply settle down
