SPRING CELEBRATIONS WITH NATURE Each year when March rolls around, it marks the official start of spring about midway through the month. This year may feel a bit different than last given the pandemic that continues to stretch forward and all of the changes we’ve experienced with its presence. What better way to ward off the COVID and winter blues than by enjoying the fresh air of the season? This month holds a number of holidays, events and other notable celebrations. St. Patrick’s Day, Passover, the first day of spring, International Women’s Day and so many others are part of March’s extensive event calendar. However, two especially exciting events happening this month are World Wildlife Day and the famous Florida Strawberry Festival. Although seemingly unrelated, there is an underlying theme of the appreciation of nature. World Wildlife Day is a day designated for learning more about the role both global and local wildlife hold in our lives. Although the holiday is officially on March 3, it’s a great opportunity to use the entire month as a way to potentially find your new favorite animal, which may dwell in your backyard. Spring is a great time to learn more about your local

honey, but their pollination process is crucial for any local environment. As these insects move from plant to plant, area to area, they help ensure that both the flora and fauna are able to flourish. Bees are essential because, according to NASA, “… they pollinate approximately 130 agricultural crops in the U.S. including fruit, fiber, nut and vegetable crops. Bee pollination adds approximately 14 billion dollars annually to improved crop yield and quality.”

Honey bees are the tireless workers behind the scenes making sure that our own operations don’t crumble. The Florida Strawberry Festival focuses, of course, on the beauty of locally grown strawberries by putting them to good use. Whether it’s in a classic shortcake, ice cream or even bought in bulk, the popular berries make an appearance every year in early March. The love of strawberries brings together the community to enjoy the beautiful Florida weather and learn more about these fruits come to be. This includes recognizing the importance of local wildlife in strawberry production, including honey bees, as mentioned above. By jumping from to each strawberry blossom, bees help cultivate the crop that brings us the yearly festival. Really, we have the bees to thank for our favorite local festival each year! This month, take the time to learn more about your local wildlife, read more about the thousands of interesting animals on our planet and experience the 2021 Florida Strawberry Festival.

Danger, Dames, Double-O-Seven BY RANDAL C. HILL
“Bond. James Bond.” Film critic Peter Bradshaw once wrote, “It is the most famous selfintroduction from any character in movie history. Three cool monosyllables. Surname first, a little curtly…and then, as if an afterthought, the first name, followed by the surname again. Connery carried it off with an icily disdainful style, in full evening dress [and] with a cigarette hanging from his lips.” UK writer Ian Fleming’s novel “Dr. No” was first published in 1958. Four years later, the silver screen treatment gave movie fans worldwide a chance to see, for the first time, Fleming’s fearless, dashing, lady-loving Agent 007 in a highly entertaining bit of celluloid melodrama. And its handsome star was a 32-year-old newcomer with a thin résumé. The Scottish breakout actor, Sean Connery, was born in 1930 to an Edinburgh factory worker and a cleaning woman. As an adult, Connery worked as a milkman, a truck driver, a lifeguard, an artist’s model and a coffin polisher before he gained fame and fortune via James Bond. As licensed-to-kill Agent 007, our hero was about as sexy and dangerous as one could get. But before the movie-going public was allowed to see Connery, director Terence Young first chose to tutor the rough-aroundthe-edges actor in how to display wit, charm and style as the charismatic Bond character. And although Sean stood 6 feet, 2 inches tall, all the Bond sets and furniture were built slightly smaller than in real life, so as to make Agent 007 appear even larger and more imposing than he actually was.
In “Dr. No,” Bond is sent to Jamaica to investigate the murder of a fellow agent and his secretary. He eventually becomes involved with a mysterious and sinister nuclear scientist named Dr. Julius No (Joseph Wiseman), who espouses world domination as his goal. Along the way, Bond has to contend with such inconveniences as a “deadly” tarantula (tarantulas aren’t poisonous), flame throwers, flying bullets, severe beatings and a near drowning. Adding to the complications is a trio of temptresses—the Oriental charmer Miss Taro (Zena Marshall), casino denizen Sylvia Trench (Eunice Gayson), and the bikini-clad, seashellcollecting siren Honey Ryder (Ursulla Andress). Dr. No doesn’t actually appear until 1 hour and 27 minutes into the story. At one point, the no-goodnik tries in vain to persuade Agent 007 to join his evil organization. That’s when Dr. No huffs, “I thought you had some style, Mr. Bond, but I see you’re just a stupid policeman.” “Dr. No” provided the signature elements for the later James Bond movie offerings—its distinctive theme music; head-spinning, high-octane action sequences; alluring young women and even James’s preference for vodka martinis (shaken, not stirred). Footnote: When the feature was released, United Artists had to make some adjustments to the title before it reached foreign markets. In South Korea, for example, the film’s name would have been literally translated as “007 Murder Number,” and in Japan the movie would have been called “We Don’t Want Doctors!” Lifestyles After 50 • March 2021 • 5
Dear Ms. Price, My daughter and her husband have just separated after four months of being married. Because of COVID-19, it was a virtual wedding with lots of generous gifts. They both want to know what they should do about the wedding gifts. Should gifts be returned and how should that process work? Sincerely, Thank you, Trying to Do the Right Thing

Dear “Trying to Do the Right Thing,”
Sincerely, Heartbroken
My sympathies to your family during what must be a difficult situation. According to etiquette experts, the gifts do not need to be returned. It’s already a sad situation and friends who gave gifts out of love for the couple will just feel even more saddened by the gesture.
Dear “Heartbroken,”
Dear Ms. Price,
While you have every right to feel anger, holding on to resentment only hurts you. I would recommend talking with a professional about the loss of both your father and photos, and finding a way to forgive and move forward.
We lost my father a year ago after a long battle with cancer. During the funeral service, while everyone was visiting my parents’ home, my brother “borrowed” all of the family photo albums. He said he was going to make copies and put everything on his computer, which was a good idea. A year later, after many attempts to get the photo albums back, my brother finally admitted that the albums were stolen from his car. These are photos covering over 100 years of memories. Everyone was upset, but life has gone on and my brother has been forgiven

Living in the Blue Zone of Happiness BY JAN LARRAINE COX In these times of COVID-19 and economic woes, who wouldn’t love to escape to a Blue Zone of Happiness? The truth is, we can make some choices today that can lead us there. National Geographic fellow Dan Buettner has traveled to and written about five longevity hot spots he discovered around our planet. The specific places he studied were Ikaria, Greece; Okinawa, Japan; Sardinia, Italy; Nicoya Peninsula, Costa Rica and Loma Linda, California, where folks can easily live past 100 years old. He circled them Image from HealthyLodi.com on his map in blue ink and thereby coined the phrase “blue zones”. Keys to longevity in these locations start with moving naturally in environments that encourage continuous motion such as house and yard work. Many tend their own gardens and walk to church, to work and to see friends. The great majority do attend faith services each week, which research shows adds 4 to 14 years of life expectancy Another life extender Buettner discovered is a sense of purpose or “plan de vida”—why I wake up in the morning. This commitment adds up to 7 more years of life expectancy, he found. Downshifting is also key: stress leads to chronic inflammation, which is connected to age-related diseases. Blue Zone people have frequent routines to de-stress, including remembering ancestors, prayer, napping, meditating and gathering with friends at days’ end. Drinking a glass of wine with food is also a typical social opportunity. Buettner found the longest-lived people thrive in what the Okinawans call moai, or a group of five lifelong friends that commit to each other for life and help shape healthy behavior. The 80% rule is to stop eating when your stomach is still 20% empty which can lead to losing weight rather than gaining. The main meal is earlier in the day and smallest meal in the late afternoon or early evening. Lifestyles After 50 • March 2021 • 10
How to Blue Zone your kitchen? Some suggestions include “Four Always Foods”. Place on the refrigerator a note: 100% whole grains, nuts, beans and fruits. “Four to Avoid” include sugary drinks, salty snacks, processed meats and packaged sweets. If you can, shop at a local farmers market and avoid factory-made foods wrapped in plastic, and especially those with more than 5 ingredients. To boost your energy and vitality, eat at least 3 from this “Super Blue Food” list daily: beans, greens, sweet potatoes, nuts, olive oil, oats, barley, fruit, green or herbal tea and turmeric. Also, incorporate “Longevity Superfoods”: Vegetables & fruits: fennel, potatoes, shitake mushrooms, squash, seaweed, avocados, bananas, lemons, papayas, plantains, tomatoes. Beans: black beans, black-eyed peas, chickpeas, fava beans. Grains: barley, brown rice, oatmeal. Lean Protein: salmon, tofu, soy. Also include: coffee, green tea, red wine, garlic, honey, turmeric, Mediterranean herbs, nuts, seeds and olive oil. Contact Jan Cox for more information and discussion: jlarraine@ gmail.com.

Isolation Is Killing Us. Literally. Connection is the Cure. Before COVID-19 we faced a crisis: the loneliness epidemic. Loneliness can be devastating for seniors, eclipsing obesity and even smoking for premature decline or death. Now, social distancing means many more feel isolated and scared. Connection is the cure. Research shows friendships drastically reduce risks associated with loneliness. Connecting is difficult these days, but Seniors in Service can help with TelePals! TelePals offer regularly-scheduled friendly calls that develop genuine friendships. TelePals get background-checks and expert training. Participants are carefully matched, building enduring relationships that help them both. The heartwarming stories tell it best. Angelina is 83-years-old and lives alone, with no support from family or friends. Her fixed income doesn’t allow her access to internet or even cable TV. Now fear of COVID-19 makes her feel imprisoned in her own home. Imagine being elderly and alone, cut off from everything during these unprecedented times. There’s nobody to make sure she’s eating. Nobody to share her memories with. Nobody to tell her there’s someone who cares. Her pastor hears about TelePals and encourages parishioners to enroll. Most are too proud to admit they’re struggling. But Angelina and Christine both volunteer to help. Soon they’re chatting by phone regularly. Both are retired teachers. Both love reading the exact same books. When Christine learns about Angelina’s diabetes, she asks about her diet and if she’s getting up to walk around. Angelina can tell Christine really cares. “You got a treasure with her, and now she is mine.” For Jim, TelePals offers a lifeline. As a veteran, he’s conditioned to never ask for help. Doctor visits are one place he finds connection. In the waiting room, he sees a

flyer stating: “You’ve Got a Friend!” An invitation to call Seniors in Service. Inexplicably, he makes the call: “I am 70 and I have nobody.” TelePals offers socialization and wellness-checks. For some, it’s the only conversation they have all day. Enrollment is easy by phone or www. TelePalNow.org. Kevin, a retired businessman, enrolls to volunteer. As a veteran, he shares a special bond with others who’ve served. “We share experiences from our past and daily lives…We get serious but also laugh…It’s the highlight of my day.” Intergenerational TelePals Chelsea and Rebecca initially wondered what they would talk about. A psychology student, Chelsea learned how isolation affects health. With COVID-19, she’s lonely herself. Discovering TelePals on USF’s website, she volunteers. She’s nervous at first but hearing about Rebecca’s adventures when she was young is fun! Chelsea ensures Rebecca has everything she needs, alerting TelePals staff of any concerns. Their chats help them both, navigating this new reality, together. The loneliness epidemic is killing our seniors. Seniors in Service offers opportunities for TelePals to participate safely and remotely. Learn more: www. seniorsinservice.org or 813-819-0725. CREATIVE CORNER A Choice By Alan Fisher Let your light shine for others to see
There’s a spiritual evolution happening now
People receive your feelings vibrationally
A state of being, no sweat of the brow
If you’re complaining and feeling down
No guns or protests, for it’s not out there
It affects family, friends and all those around
You sense it within and become aware
But if you’re centered and in the flow The ripples go out to everyone you know You have a choice about what to express Heal the world or add to the mess

WORLD WILDLIFE DAY:
LEARN ABOUT FLORIDA’S CRITTERS BY REBECCA FENDING World Wildlife Day comes each year in March, this year on March 3; however, we can celebrate and cherish our wildlife every day. Challenge yourself to learn more about your local Floridian wildlife year-round, starting this month with the critters and creatures below. All information is from the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) website.
Black Bears Believe it or not, Florida is home to these large mammals. Black bears in Florida tend to stay within their “home range,” or area that provides them their shelter, food and water, but can travel up to 50 to 120 square miles for male bears. They tend to choose areas that have a significant amount of “understory” or brush. These gentle giants tend to mind their business and land, so long as you do not provoke them, they easily coexist with humans.

Bobcats Florida is home to two predatory cats: panthers and bobcats. The bobcat, about twice the size of a domestic house cat, isn’t too picky about where it lives in the state, they like the warm weather. Making a home in anywhere from the swamps to suburban backyards, these nocturnal mammals build their housing in places like hollow logs, tree hollows, caves, rock outcroppings and openings in the ground, according to Sciencing.com. Bobcats are currently at their peak mating season during March.
Panthers This big cat is similar to the bobcat in where and how they live. Typically, panthers can be found confined to the swampy areas of the Everglades and Big Cypress National Preserve. Whereas bobcats tend to hunt smaller rodents and mammals, panthers also indulge in hunting Florida’s white-tail deer and wild hogs, helping to keep populations at a manageable number. Panthers are considered a critically endangered species, susceptible to nearly every threat of extinction.
Gray Foxes Although technically native to all of Florida, gray foxes tend to call the densely wooded, northern parts of the state their home. These treeclimbing, nocturnal mammals typically make a diet out of anything edible, including other small mammals and rodents, fish, berries and even insects. Although they are part of the Canidae family, and therefore “cousins” of our domestic pups, Florida foxes have been known to prey on indoor pets when they are outside at dawn or dusk, so be careful!
River Otters Found throughout the state, except for the Keys, these water lovers can be found in or near different bodies of freshwater, but more typically in rivers. Active at all times of day, river otters tend to nosh on small shellfish, like crawfish and turtles, and fish. These precious little creatures are not aggressive towards humans and are instead curious from a distance. As always, do not interfere with wildlife you may see, whether it’s in your backyard or crosses your path during a hike. Admire any wild creatures from afar and snap a quick picture before moving on, if you like!

newshowerdeal.com/after50 | 855-656-0287 “Me and Bobby McGee” by Janis Joplin BY: RANDAL C. HILL In Nashville, the college-educated Texan Kris Kristofferson once swept the floors of Music City’s Columbia Recording Studio. In his off hours, Kris created tune after tune in his quest to become a respected songwriter. It took a while, but he eventually gained acclaim by creating such now-revered classics as “For the Good Times” and “Sunday Morning Coming Down.” Kristofferson eventually became a singer/songwriter with Monument Records, which was helmed by Fred Foster, a businessman smitten with a Nashville secretary—Barbara “Bobbi” McKee—who worked in a nearby music office. One night, Foster phoned Kris and asked him to write a song about her (but spelling her first name differently to make it gender neutral). In their discussion, Kristofferson thought Foster had said “McGee” instead of “McKee.” The result was the story of a pair of drifters: the narrator and Bobby McGee. Together they hitched a ride from a truck driver and sang “every song that driver knew” as they made their way throughout the South. Later, they went their separate ways, much to the profound sadness of the narrator. Several country artists recorded the song when it first became available, but it took a fellow Texan and soon-to-be-doomed ex-lover of Kris to make “Me and Bobby McGee” a million-selling iconic work. As a teenager, Janis Joplin had been a bright but rebellious misfit who cast herself as a beatnik. She later
Lifestyles After 50 • March 2021 • 16
dropped out of the University of Texas in Austin and hitchhiked to San Francisco, where she became the lead singer of the hard-rocking Big Brother and the Holding Company. A heavy drinker and drug abuser, Joplin later offered a throat-shredding performance at 1967’s Image from Amazon Monterey Pop Festival before headlining as a soloist at Woodstock two years later. She recorded Kristofferson’s song for inclusion on what would become her fourth and final album, “Pearl.” Kristofferson, who had once sung the tune to Janis, was unaware that she had recorded it until the day after she died of a heroin overdose. Kris later admitted, “I couldn’t listen to the song without really breaking up.” “Me and Bobby McGee” was issued four months after Joplin’s death and became her only Number One single on the Billboard chart. It has since been recorded by a variety of artists ranging from Dolly Parton to the Grateful Dead.

Streaming My Life Away Dinner at 5:30? Where do you think I live, South Florida?
Three Chairs in One
Truth is, I do live in South Florida, but dinner at 5:30 pm has nothing to do with the Early Bird Special, or a 7:30 pm bedtime. It has everything to do with filling the rest of the evening with as many episodes as possible of whatever we are currently watching on Netflix, Hulu, Acorn, Apple TV or Amazon Prime. Or a 7-day free trial of some other app, in which case dinner might collide with lunch since we have only a week to complete three seasons of 10 parts each of another irresistible series.

ACCREDITED BUSINESS A+
You can’t always lie down in bed and sleep. Heartburn, cardiac problems, hip or back aches – and dozens of other ailments and worries. Those are the nights you’d give anything for a comfortable chair to sleep in: one that reclines to exactly the right degree, raises your feet and legs just where you want them, supports your head and shoulders properly, and operates at the touch of a button. Our Perfect Sleep Chair® does all that and more. More than a chair or recliner, it’s designed to provide total comfort. Choose your preferred heat and massage settings, for hours of soothing relaxation. Reading or watching TV? Our chair’s recline technology allows you to pause the chair in an infinite number of settings. You’ll love the other benefits, too. It helps with correct spinal alignment and promotes back pressure relief,
to prevent back and muscle pain. The overstuffed, oversized biscuit style back and unique seat design will cradle you in comfort. Generously filled, wide armrests provide enhanced arm support when sitting or reclining. It even has a battery backup in case of a power outage.
Due to COVID, evenings which might be spent at a theater are now passed in front of a Smart TV. The couch cushion is permanently indented and can no longer be plumped. Press that “Play” button on the remote and a binge is likely to follow. And once a series is over, I’m totally bereft. I need a new fix, and quickly. Is this what it’s like to be an addict?

On Zoom calls with friends, conversations have switched from politics and other intellectual pursuits to, “What are you watching?” Hopefully, you and they have similar tastes, or you might have to consider some new friends. My own tastes, and those of my husband who still controls the remote, lean towards mysteries, detective shows, crime dramas. And the internet does not disappoint. I now have access to police procedurals around the globe. I was recently besotted by an intrigue from Holland. This one had it all: sex, murder, crooked politicians, corrupt businessmen, more murder. The Dutch penal system was most impressive. If I ever entertain a life of crime, I’m heading to Amsterdam. The cells looked quite comfortable, visiting hours were flexible and the detainees were allowed to wear their own clothing. However, I wouldn’t mind an orange jumpsuit. It brings out the blue in my eyes. So, what will happen post-pandemic? Will on-line life prevail even after stay-at-home life has ended? Will we return to a movie theater once it’s deemed safe or remain on the couch? When we can patronize a restaurant and sit inside, will we stay home with a pizza and watch a few more episodes of some import from Turkey? I like to think I will resume mingling where I left off a year ago, but who knows? So, until we’ve all been vaccinated, tell me what you’ve watched recently. I’d really appreciate recommendations! Useful Knowledge in a Nutshell BY KATHY A. MEGYERI
Did you know that... • The average family of four in the U.S. generates 6,424 pounds of garbage per year? • The Great Wall of China and the now closed Fresh Kills Landfill of Staten Island, the resting place for 53 years of New York City’s solid waste, are the only two manmade structures big enough to be seen from space? • Most parking meters have a 2–10-minute grace period built in before expiring? So, why are these and many other facts compiled into one of the most delightful reading experiences of the new year? It’s because Spike Carlsen’s “A Walk Around the Block: Stoplight Secrets, Mischievous Squirrels, Manhole Mysteries and Other Stuff You See Every Day.” This former executive director of Reader’s Digest Handyman magazine is an avid woodworker and bicyclist who explores the world around his home in Stillwater, Minnesota, and finds wonderment in the common everyday occurrences that most of us overlook but are really important facets of living today in the U.S.
Carlsen celebrates the obviously mundane but opens our eyes to engineering marvels, natural wonders and human stories. He guides us through the intricacies of powerplants, the path of everyday letters we send, the genius of recycling centers and then awakens us to the fact that everything about this spectacular world around us isn’t just a “spectator sport.” The book is engaging, endearing and enchanting because of his anecdotes and accurate observations. The book changes the way we see things in our ordinary lives, especially as we join him as he strolls through the trash museum of New York City, invites us to explore with him the world of squirrels, pigeons and roadkill and helps us understand stoplights, pedestrian crossings and bike lanes as we walk on familiar sidewalks. I’ve already ordered multiple copies of “A Walk Around the Block” for Easter gifts for friends and relatives because the book is intensely more charming and useful than any colored eggs in a basket. What a valuable resource and utterly delightful and fascinating textbook.
What You Can Do for Your Kidneys March is National Kidney Month, a great opportunity to learn more about these miraculous organs. The kidneys filter about a half cup of blood every minute, removing waste and excess water for urine. These organs do more than just filter blood, they help regulate blood pressure and make more red blood cells, crucial for providing nutrients to your body as a whole. So, what can you do to keep them in tip-top shape and make their job easier? Here are a few tips according to Healthline: 1. Watch your blood sugar: The reason a majority of diabetics struggle with kidney issues is because an excess of sugar in the blood means your kidneys are working double time to clean your blood. Sugar is more difficult to remove than most other waste due to sugar’s large compound structure. Keeping your blood sugar to a minimum helps keep your kidneys from burnout later in life. 2. Drink plenty of water: Another obvious choice for better health, drinking plenty of water throughout the day helps your kidneys flush out waste, sodium and toxins. Drinking your daily amount of water can also help guard against kidney stones. Adults should drink 2 liters, or half a gallon of water daily.
3. Don’t smoke or try to quit: Smoking puts stress on the blood vessels, causing damage and an inability to circulate blood to the extremities. 4. Avoid NSAIDs: This isn’t to say you can’t take nonsteroidal antiinflammatory drugs like ibuprofen, but you should not use them daily. NSAIDs block prostaglandins, natural body chemicals that normally dilate blood vessels leading to the kidneys, ultimately leading to decreased blood flow and oxygen to the organs. If you’re looking to give your kidneys a helping hand at meal time, opt for foods low in nutrients related to kidney stress, such as cabbage, which is high in fiber and antioxidants. Avoid foods high in salt or processed meats, and don’t consume large amounts of potassium or phosphorus as these can also make your kidneys work harder than needed. Visit kidney.org for more.

Boogie
BY RANDAL C. HILL
It seems that there aren’t too many lines of work that 39-year-old Eddie Huang hasn’t been involved in. His resume includes attorney, book author (“Fresh Off the Boat”), TV host, chef, stand-up comic, clothing designer, attorney and marijuana dealer. And now the son of Taiwanimmigrant parents is bringing his coming-of-age drama “Boogie” to the silver screen.
The film stars Eddie’s former assistant Taylor Takahashi as Boogie. The diverse supporting cast includes such on-the-rise actors as Pamela Chee, Jorge Lendeborg, Jr., Mike Moh and Dave East. Now-deceased rapper Pop Smoke—he was murdered in 2019—provides the haunting music that is woven throughout the story.
“Boogie” is a classic inspirational sports drama but one that is played out, for a change, in the Asian-American experience. Written and directed by Huang, the movie tells the story of Alfred “Boogie” Chin, a Chinese-Taiwanese American high school basketball phenomenon in New York whose dream is to play in the NBA. He maintains these dreams amid turmoil at home and among his classmates at his Queens high school.
Chin must deal not only with them and at-school rivals but also navigate a relationship with a winsome girl he has recently met and fallen in love with.
Discouragement and resolve hang in equal measure over Boogie’s head like a threatening raincloud. “We never expected to have freedom or independence or equality in this country,” he proclaims, “but it doesn’t matter what the challenges are, you run through that wall.” He also expounds cynically on some daunting stereotypes: “No one believes in an Asian basketball player… it’s a joke in this country. We can cook, clean, count real good, but anything else, we’re picked last.” Then there’s the crushing burden of expectation. When Chin draws close to his lofty goal, he admits to his girlfriend, “I’ve got to represent. I’ve got 5,000 years of Chinese history. That’s a lot of pressure.” She, in turn, offers simply, “You have a chance to change history.”
Huang has admitted that he was inspired by the hit feature “Good Will Hunting,” whose story motivated Eddie to enter the filmmaking world. “That movie was the moment where I said I would like to make a movie that changes another kid’s life. The way that they were able to humanize domestic violence and those relationships, it opened my eyes because I didn’t know you could talk about stuff like that in movies.” Released by Focus Features, Boogie is scheduled for release on March 5.
Boogie’s parents lean on him to try for a scholarship to a prestigious university.

A large Southwest Florida business has a heart for giving and recently made sure that people who rely on food from the Harry Chapin Food Bank received more than just canned goods. Lipman Family Farms, located in Collier County, is currently the largest open field tomato grower in the U.S., but they see themselves as more than that. “We don’t see our company as mere assets as farm equipment and desks and chairs,” said Jaime Weisinger, director of community and government relations at the farm. “We see our company as a living, breathing entity... A part of the community.” In keeping with that sense of community, philanthropy is a core part of who they are and what they represent, which is why they partner with the Harry Chapin Food Bank of Southwest Florida. “People could be one paycheck away from not being able to feed themselves and their family,” Weisinger said. “And Harry Chapin has shown us that they have the ability to make sure those people get food.” Over the last several years, Lipman Family Farms has become a major contributor to the food bank, donating thousands of dollars to the cause while also making sure that the families Harry Chapin serves can also get fresh produce. “If we have any surplus food or anything that we deem unmarketable or something that our customers wouldn’t take, and all we need to do is make one call and they send a truck over and pick it up and it’s in people’s hands within the next day or two,” Weisinger said. “It means a lot to us to be able to make sure that those folks that need the food are able to get it.”
