MAY: A CELEBRATORY MONTH The month of May is always exciting as it marks what feels like the start of summer (even though the season does not officially start until June 21) and several holidays sprinkled throughout the month. From goofy celebratory puns to a somber holiday in which we honor fallen military servicemen and women, here’s your guide to celebrating this month. First, there’s May the Fourth, held on, wait for it—May 4. For all you Star Wars fans out there, this is your day to celebrate the franchise that put George Lucas’ name on the map. Observances have included annually staged photographs recreating some of the most iconic still images from the movies. For others, it simply represents the perfect excuse to binge-watch their favorite movies. Next up, Cinco de Mayo: the holiday celebrating the Mexican Army’s victory over the French Empire at the Battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862. Surprisingly, this holiday is a bigger deal in the United States than it is in Mexico. This day is mainly celebrated in the Mexican state of Puebla, where the original battle took place. But for us Americans, it’s a great way to celebrate our South-of-the-Border sibling with tacos, margaritas and plenty of green, red and white. Mother’s Day was created by Anna Jarvis, after the passing of her mother Ann Reeves Jarvis, in 1905. Originally designated as a day to honor mothers and the sacrifices they make for their families and children, this holiday has stayed true to its roots ever since. If you haven’t started planning

a great May and e v Ha

for Mother’s Day yet, be sure to take a look at the article “Your Perfect Gift Guide to Mother’s Day” on our website, lifestylesafter50.com. Finally, one of the most important holidays held in May is Memorial Day. This commemorative day was first celebrated in the springtime after the Civil War. Communities and towns in the late 1860s held tributes to soldiers lost in battle, complete with decorating and cleaning headstones, reciting prayers and comforting still grieving families. Initially, Memorial Day was named “Decoration Day,” and celebrated on May 30 each year. General John A. Logan, leader of an organization for Northern Civil War veterans, proposed this date. In 1968 Congress passed the Uniform Monday Holiday Act, which established Memorial Day as the last Monday in May to create a three-day weekend for federal employees. This holiday offers more than just a long weekend to those working or in school—it also makes the unofficial start of summer. Celebrating and memorializing those who sacrificed all they had for the sake of their country and fellow Americans brings about the birth of the warmest season. With the Fourth of July on the horizon, Memorial Day sets the tone for what summer is all about—freedom.

FLORIDA HONORS ITS VETERANS BY LESLIE L. MEGYERI As a military veteran, I am grateful for the many sites that Florida offers to honor those who have served their country. The Department of Veterans Affairs’ National Cemetery Administration maintains 155 national cemeteries in 42 states and Puerto Rico, as well as 34 monument sites, but Florida alone is home to nine national cemeteries. On Memorial Day, I try to visit one or two of these solemn, beautiful places where visitors can reflect, remember, respect and honor those who have served. Sarasota National Cemetery is the closest to where I live. On 295 acres, it has a public information center, electronic gravesite locator, restrooms, memorial walkway, two committal shelters and a stunning 2,000 seat ceremonial amphitheater known as Patriot Plaza that features personal testimonies engraved in stone amid memorable artwork. Other Florida National Cemeteries are: 1. Barrancas National Cemetery is in the Pensacola Naval Air Station and sits on 8,423 acres that holds the remains of British aviators, Civil War casualties and the second wife of Apache Indian Chief Geronimo named Ga-ah. Deceased veterans there number 44,000 but access to the cemetery depends on admittance to this activeduty Naval Air Station. 2. Cape Canaveral National Cemetery is a new 318-acre cemetery in Mims that will serve the burial needs for more than 163,000 veterans over the next 200 years. Legendary Tuskegee Airman Edwin T. Cowan was reinterred here in 2019 with full military honors. 3. Florida National Cemetery sits on 500 acres within the Withlacoochee State Forest 50 miles north of Tampa. It is one of the busiest cemeteries in the nation, boasts a memorial pathway lined with over 50 memorials and its main assembly area of open colonnades is used for Veterans Day and Memorial Day ceremonies. 4. St. Augustine National Cemetery is a historic site that has an illustrious background as it was designated as a national cemetery in 1881 and sits in the oldest city in the nation which was founded in the 17th century as a Spanish colonial possession.

5. Bay Pines National Cemetery features a towering monument of pink Etowah marble that was built in 1937 and sits on the grounds of the Veterans Administration Center in Pinellas County, northwest of St. Petersburg. Other than cemeteries, there are other historical sites, monuments, museums and destinations for those who desire to pay tribute to our fallen soldiers. The Military Heritage Museum in Punta Gorda holds 50,000 artifacts on display from the Spanish-American War to the Mideast conflicts. Nearby in Laishley Park is a half-scale replica of the Vietnam Memorial Wall in Washington, D.C. that lists more than 58,000 names of deceased men and women and honors, “the courage, sacrifice, and devotion to duty and country of those who served during the longest war in US history.” Since more than 500,000 World War II residents live in Florida, the Department of State’s Florida’s World War II Heritage Trail at dos. myflorida.com offers still more sites for visitors to honor our national veterans this Memorial Day. Leslie L. Megyeri is a retired U.S. Army LtC who resides in Venice, FL.

Cruella

BY RANDAL C. HILL

In Disney’s 1961 animated feature 101 Dalmatians, based on a 1956 novel by Dodie Smith, we meet Cruella de Vil. (Could there be a more perfect first name to represent evil?) As a pampered and glamorous London heiress, her character became a symbol of greed, vanity and evil on her way to becoming a pop-culture icon. In 1996, Glenn Close portrayed Cruella in Disney’s 101 Dalmatians remake, as well as in the 2000 sequel 102 Dalmatians.

world of fashion, she befriends a pair of young streetwise thieves who enjoy Cruella’s penchant for mischief. Eventually, de Vil comes face to face with a most formidable competitor, the debonair fashion legend Baroness von Hellman, who wants to team up with Cruella for a fashionindustry takeover. Uh-oh. We must keep in mind that Cruella, who comes to us here as a ‘70s punk-rock designer with gaudily twotoned, Lady Gaga-like hair, admits, “I was born brilliant, born bad—and a little bit mad. I’m Cruella.”

Now Disney is bringing Cruella back in a bound-to-be-a-hit film of the same name and starring Academy Award and Golden Globe recipient Emma Stone in the titular role. There’s also two-time Oscar earner Emma Thompson as the Baroness and the UK’s Mark Strong as Boris. The latest offering explores the backstory of Cruella—the Queen of Mean—in this prequel to the six-decades-old original Disney movie. Fashionista de Vil didn’t start off as an evil-fueled grifter, yet she was always aware of her place in society as a scrappy underdog. “From the very beginning, I realized I saw the world differently than everyone else. That didn’t sit well with some people. But I wasn’t for everyone. I guess they were always scared that I’d be a psycho.” Wanting to prove her worth and become the brightest star in the glittering

but root for her.

When the women become a formidable team, their relationship sets in motion a course of events and revelations that will cause de Vil to embrace her wicked side and become a raucous, emotionally pained and revengeseeking character who proclaims, “I am woman, hear me roar!” Not exactly a sympathetic character, you might think. But later, when we hear her side of the story, we can’t help

Directed ably by Craig Gillespie (I, Tonya; Fright Night), Cruella counts among its executive producers none other than Glenn Close. The feature, promoted as a family film but one that may be a bit edgy for some impressionable youngsters, is slated for nationwide release on May 28, pandemic permitting.

CREATIVE CORNER An Attitude of Gratitude By: Jeanette Haug

Beauty abounds in many and myriad ways.

Remember to thank Him for all of His gifts are so rare.

Sunshine and moonbeams and twinkling stars in the sky.

Even when trials come into our peaceful abode,

The smile of a child can brighten your gloomiest days.

He’s there to assist us, to help us, He really does care.

Flora and fauna, the birds and the bees passing by.

Just ask Him with love, and He’ll help us to carry our load.

Can anyone doubt that a power so great does exist?

The beauty around me invokes me to offer this plea,

He shows us Himself in all of His creatures so fine.

May all people, all ages, awaken Your beauty to see.

Open your eyes and surely His love can’t be missed. Inhale the beauty, it’s out there, it’s yours and it’s mine.

For submissions: Send your poem (150 words or less) to editor@lifestylesafter50.com with the words “Creative Corner” in the subject line.

COIN SHORTAGE ZIP CODE DISTRIBUTION NOTICE

■ FLORIDA AREA RESIDENTS CASH IN: Pictured above and watched closely by guards are protected U.S. Coin Packages containing the valuable unsearched Vault Bags that everyone will be trying to get. It’s hard to tell how much these unsearched bags loaded with rarely seen U.S. Gov’t issued coins could be worth someday. That’s because each Vault Bag is known to contain nearly 3 pounds of U.S. Gov’t issued coins some dating back to the early 1800’s, so you better believe at just $980 these Unsearched Vault Bags are a real steal.

Decision puts valuable United States coins back in circulation – zip codes determine who gets them

Unsearched Vault Bags loaded with rarely seen U.S. Gov’t issued coins some dating back to the 1800’s and worth up to 50 times their face value are actually being handed over to residents who find their zip code on the Distribution List below and beat the 48 hour order deadline

of U.S. residents claim as many as they can get their hands on. That’s because after the bags were loaded with nearly 3 pounds of U.S. Gov’t issued coins the dates were never searched and the bags were securely sealed. That means there’s no telling what you’ll find until you search all the coins,” said Withrow. “But don’t thank the Government. As Executive Advisor to Federated Mint, I get paid to inform and educate the general public regarding U.S. coins. Ever since the decision by Federated Mint to put rarely seen U.S. Gov’t issued coins back in circulation, I’m being asked how much are the unsearched Vault Bags worth? The answer is, there’s no way to tell. Coin values always fluctuate and there are never any

guarantees, but we do know this. Each unsearched bag weighs nearly 3 pounds and is known to contain rarely seen Morgan Silver Dollars and these coins alone could be worth $40 - $325 in collector value each according to The Official Red Book, a Guide Book of United States Coins. So there’s no telling what you’ll find until you search through all the coins. But you better believe at just $980 these unsearched Vault Bags are a steal, “said Withrow. The only thing U.S. residents who find their zip code printed in today’s publication need to do is call the National Toll-Free Hotline before the 48-hour deadline ends. This is ver y impor tant. The Vault Bag fee has been set for $1,500 for residents who miss the

And you better believe with each bag being loaded with nearly 3 pounds of U.S. Gov’t issued coins we’re guessing they’re going to go quick,” said Withrow. A Turning Point BY JAN LARRAINE COX

We understand we could be approaching a turning point in the pandemic in the United States if we all continue to follow Covid safety guidelines, even after receiving the vaccine. In the Miami area, spring break revelers threatened this hope, but thankfully warm weather hastened their return home! Because of the continued length of this health crisis, we who are endeavoring to stay safe are thinking forward, even if not ready to act on our latest goals. It helps to have something to anticipate. Many have decided to try a new hobby, which helps to create neural pathways in the brain. Others have decided to eliminate what doesn’t provide positive feedback to their lives.

Image from PositivePsychology.org

Some have found ways to become resilient and bounce back. By thinking of what you like about yourself, one becomes kinder to oneself, avoiding negative self-talk. Consequently, we can become more meaningful in the community, as we find our meaning and purpose. Some ask: “What is my unique footprint, and how can I share my unique strengths with others?” The VIA Classification of 24 Character Strengths addresses this question, for we all have within us many gifts that can brighten the lives of others. The VIA Institute on Character in Cincinnati, Ohio, has devised a unique list of strengths addressing Wisdom, Courage, Humanity, Justice, Temperance and Transcendence. Wisdom evolves from creativity—how clever and adaptive one is in problem-solving, for example. With an innate love of learning one can easily master new skills while staying open-minded enough to master new topics and add to one’s knowledge. Wisdom opens the doors to the big picture and the ability to think critically while thinking through issues. Courage is linked to perseverance, having the stamina to persist to the completion of a task. To speak up for what is right, energetically enthusiastic, delivers authentic and trustworthy results, from a sincere place in one’s heart.

Lifestyles After 50 • May 2021 • 10

Humanity delivers altruism and knowing what makes others tick. Aware of the motives and feelings of oneself and others encourages close relationships based on a warm and genuine core. When compassionate, our kindness can translate into a sort of social intelligence that engenders warm and close relationships. The character strength of Justice encourages one to act as a team player with loyalty and social responsibility. As a just leader one encourages group activities that accomplish things for the team. Temperance brings with it forgiveness with mercy and the acceptance of others’ shortcomings. In humility, one modestly allows one’s accomplishments to speak for themselves. Finally, Transcendence delivers the ability to appreciate the beauty and the goodness of others that surround us. To feel blessed and express thanks for this goodness that surrounds us, we connect to purpose and meaning. We are drawn into a relationship with the sacred. As we aim to end this pandemic through vaccines, social distancing and mask-wearing, we can stay optimistic that we shall come out of it and once again be truly lighthearted and playful, newly enhanced with character strengths isolation has ironically grown within us.

Olive Oil Cake

RECIPE INSPIRED BY DELISH.COM Upon first hearing of olive oil cake, it may seem unlikely to be a tasty dessert, but this cake has a tried-and-true history backing its reputation. Olive oil cake originated in the Iberian Peninsula, with recipes from Jewish and Arab heritage, according to Gaulos Olive Oil. The treat has since been a popular favorite of Sevilla, Spain, for many years. Not only is olive oil cake deliciously light and perfect for spring, but nutritionists have found olive oil to be the easiest fat to digest. This makes olive oil cakes a better alternative to our typical cakes baked with vegetable oil or butter, especially for those who may have issues digesting fats. This Mother’s Day, make Mom a cake that perfectly fits the theme of spring and makes her feel special. With a light, airy texture and delicate flavors of citrus and almond, this olive oil cake recipe from Executive Chef Kaytlin Dangaran, also served at The Bistro at the Sarasota Art Museum, is sure to please.

Ingredients and supplies: • 9” springform pan • 2 eggs • 1 ⅔ cup of sugar • ⅔ cup of milk • ⅓ cup of Vin Santo

• 1 cup of extra virgin olive oil • 1 ⅔ cup of all-purpose flour • ¼ tsp. of baking soda • ½ tsp. of salt

Ben and Fillmore: Two “Hippie Bus” Dudes BY RANDAL C. HILL

In 1949, Dutch businessman Ben Pon became responsible for putting the first Volkswagen Beetle on America’s roads. But it wasn’t just the little German bug that captured Pon’s interest; he was also intrigued by the plattenwagens—small, utilitarian, rearengine trucks that zipped around the VW factory. With these vehicles in mind, Pon sketched a vehicle that, to some, resembled an oversized loaf of bread. But VW executives loved Ben’s brainchild, and before long they green-lighted the now-iconic, slab-sided microbus. Using the same low-powered, air-cooled rear engine as the popular Beetle, the first bus rolled out of the factory in 1950 and gave the world its first look at what was officially designated the Type 2 Transporter. (Type 1 was the Beetle.) In essence, the Type 2 became the first minivan. The vehicle offered a cab-over configuration which placed the driver over the front wheels. As a design feature, this allowed for a wide-angle view of the road ahead, as well as leaving an extensive space behind the front seat for passengers and cargo. To many car enthusiasts, the Type 2 served as a counterpoint

to the bulky, chrome-laden, gas-slurping American autos of the time. Originally intended to transport families and campers, the microbus was adopted by surfers and, later, hippies as something simple, efficient and fun. Soon it was on its way to becoming one of the world’s most recognized (and coveted) vehicles. People quickly embraced its austerity. For example, interiors featured practical rubber mats, not carpeting, on the floor. Before air-conditioning became commonplace, one appreciated early feature was the many windows that opened out all the way around the Type 2. To surfers, the VW microbus became the prized board-hauler of choice, preferable over a “woodie” (a wood-paneled station wagon) or a delivery van. When the surfing fad faded, counter culturists adopted the vehicle. “The hippie movement fell in love with the bus for a few reasons,” proclaimed classic car expert McKeel Hagerty. “It was cheap to maintain, easy to work on and big enough to live in.” To which Stewart Reed, the chair of a California design college, added, “The bus flew in the face of traditional social culture. It was anti-style, anti-success and rebellious in a totally new way.” The main complaint about the microbus was its speed—or lack of it. The first models offered a meager 25 horsepower engine. (One can only imagine such a vehicle trying to ascend mountains or challenging hills.) Eventually, the horsepower rating was increased to 40, but the vehicle still proved too slow for many drivers. In Disney’s Pixar movie Cars, the Fillmore character—voiced by George Carlin—is portrayed as a well-used—but not used up—1960s Type 2 with a license plate that reads 51237, Carlin’s birthdate of May 12, 1937. Fillmore’s name came from San Francisco’s Fillmore Auditorium, the home of numerous counterculture concerts. Thanks partly to Cars, the peace-loving, organic fuel-dispensing Fillmore will ensure that the VW microbus will represent the ‘60s counterculture from now on.

“It Don’t Come Easy” by Ringo Starr BY: RANDAL C. HILL His songs may have lacked the depth and social commentary of his fellow exBeatles, but Ringo Starr fans could usually count on having fun when hearing what he offered the world. Such is the case with “It Don’t Come Easy,” Ringo’s first Top 10 Apple Records single. Richard Starkey was born in Liverpool, England, in July 1940, and grew up poor in a neighborhood called the Dingle. Starkey, an only child, spent his youth in and out of hospitals, battling numerous diseases that kept him apart from home and school. To pass the time in various institutions, he learned to play drums and later explained, “I was in the hospital band… That’s where I really started playing. I never wanted anything else from there on.” Richard spent little time on academics and was barely literate when he dropped out of school in his mid-teens. At home, he practiced drumming by beating on a cookie tin with sticks.

Ringo Starr, so named for the several rings that glistened on the fingers of both hands. Then, in 1962, he was hired to replace departing Beatles drummer Pete Best. While in the Fab Four, Starr was usually allotted one lead vocal track per album. That’s him you hear on “Yellow Submarine,” “Octopus’s Garden” and “With a Little Help from My Friends.” The Beatles reached the end of their professional road in 1970. By then, each band member had grown up, become married and was following his own musical muse.

In the mid-1950s, skiffle music (folk tunes performed on often-homemade instruments) became popular in the UK. In 1957, the future Beatle co-founded the Eddie Clayton Skiffle Group, in which he banged on a second-hand drum kit or raked a thimble across a washboard. By the next year, though, skiffle had been replaced by a new musical craze—American rock ‘n’ roll.

Ringo, though, stumbled out of his own starting gate. His first two albums, Sentimental Journey and Beaucoups of Blues, were sales disappointments. But, in the spring of 1971, Starr released the non-LP single of “It Don’t Come Easy,” which became a worldwide winner. During the next two years, he enjoyed success with six more hit 45s, including two—“Photograph” and “You’re Sixteen”—that reached the peak of the Billboard charts.

He eventually became the drummer in Rory Storm and the Hurricanes, Liverpool’s most popular rock outfit. It was there that Richard Starkey became

In 2020, Ringo Starr was cited as the world’s wealthiest drummer, with a net worth of $350 million.

I first acquired fashion consciousness after perusing the sartorial sections of my dad’s hidden Playboys and was also heavily influenced by the TV series “The Untouchables”. Vests became my signature look: corduroy with satin backs, in five different colors, one for each day of the school week. Occasionally, I would switch to a gold paisley one, coupled with my pegged khaki chinos and the latest trend in Thom McCanns. I was the only white cat wearing vests at Taft Senior High. Yet, I never found THE hat. Oh, there were the requisite ball caps, and the snap- brim British driving caps. Recent years have found me trying dressier gray hats similar to those worn by James Bond. Cowboy hats, resulted in a phony, somewhat touristy look. Straw hats fared no better. Two years ago, I visited the website dedicated to the ship I served aboard in the Navy and ordered the USS Cony ballcap. Not because of any degree of patriotism but more as a souvenir of good times had and of good friends I made, some of whom I maintain contact with to this day. I needed a hat with a bill because I face the sun each morning as I walk the dog. I wear it each year to “The Golden Corral” for my annual Veteran’s Day meal. I wear it when my hair is not behaving. And I wear it because I look pretty darn good in it, if I do say so. I’d been keeping my hat on a hook next to the door. When the hooks became taken over by face masks and dog leashes, I relocated my hat to the top of the refrigerator. Towards the end of last year, my cap went missing. I searched throughout the house. I called restaurants I had recently visited, getting negative responses every time. I went so far as to pull the refrigerator out from the wall to search behind it. All I found was the sacred grounds where all plastic rings and bottle caps go to die, after the cat is finished with them. Finally, accepting defeat, I anticipated being blinded by the sun. Mike Wright has just received his 3rd stimulus check and will be ordering his replacement cap later this week. If you have his original, please contact him at micwrighthamo@gmail.com.

This 62 54 66 55 56 57 has some immediate possibilities. In another week, husband, dog and I 65 69 62 would 68be heading up north for the summer. I’ll lie awake at night creating to-do lists. Closets must be organized, and perishable foods disposed of. I’ll be exhausted by the end of each day, and realize that I’ve forgotten to eat. By the time we’re ready to leave, I will be bone weary and sleep deprived. But living through all this hysteria is guaranteed to shed a few unwanted pounds. And that, my friends, is the silver lining!

Dear Ms. Price, I want to get your opinion on a matter that my daughter and I have been discussing. She is accusing me of being grouchy and turning into an “old lady.” Lately, whenever I go shopping, I have noticed that cashiers are commenting on my purchases. If it’s a shirt, the cashier will comment on the color, size or material. The bag person and cashier will ask me questions about my food or random comments. It’s been happening more frequently and it’s becoming tiresome. I’m not sure if I am being grouchy, but I am finding myself more and more annoyed. Give it to me straight. Am I becoming a grouchy old person? Sincerely, Grumpy McGrumperston

Dear “Grumps,” Yes, it appears that you’re becoming a grouchy old person. It’s perfectly understandable. As we grow older, many of us become annoyed with senseless small talk. Full disclosure, I am in agreement with you on this topic. I’ve actually noticed the same thing and it annoys me, too. With the goal of providing quality customer service, many stores train their employees to chit chat with customers. Other than the weather, what else can they talk about? You could try to say a quick thanks and then pivot the conversation to something less annoying, like the weather or politics.

A Slice of Advice with Ms. Price To submit your questions, email advicemsprice@gmail.com. Dear Ms. Price, I am a 35-year-old woman, engaged to my high school sweetheart. We became engaged just before the pandemic and have put all of our plans on hold, including getting pregnant. I am realizing that my time is running out. My fiancé still thinks we should wait on both the marriage and pregnancy. I was so excited before all of this happened. Now I am feeling a sense of depression I have never felt before. I know we’re very lucky and these are small problems, but I am heartbroken and seeing no end in sight. Sincerely, Empty Nester Dear “Empty Nest,” I am sorry for your pain. This has been a challenging time for everyone, but I especially feel for those of you who are putting the joys of life like marriage and childbirth on hold due to the pandemic. It’s important to start your healing by sharing your feelings. Talk with your family and friends. Reach out to a therapist for help and keep discussing this timeline with your fiancé. You say that he still wants to wait, but since this is causing you so much pain, perhaps there can be a compromise.

Managing and Preventing Arthritis By Rebecca Fending

Arthritis is an inflammatory condition that affects more than three million Americans each year. There are many different types of arthritis, from rheumatoid to psoriatic, each of which can affect a person’s quality of life due to joint pain. For those who are looking for more holistic ways to manage or relieve pain, here are just a few ways in which you might be able to get back to your old self: - CBD oil for holistic pain relief. Cannabidiol has been on the rise within the past ten years, and for a good reason. CBD oil acts as a holistic form of pain relief due to its anti-inflammatory properties and interaction with neurotransmitters that perceive pain. Many people have found that ingesting a daily dose of CBD through tinctures works best for quick relief. As always, be sure to check with your doctor before trying CBD oil for yourself. - Exercise with low-impact activities. Staying active is key in keeping arthritis pain at bay to keep your joints from stiffening and a great way to be in shape. Low-impact exercises can range from tai chi to swimming or even cycling. Exercising for about 30 to 45 minutes every day helps keep inflammation to a minimum and especially helps with heart health. Any activity that minimizes impact on your joints is perfect, do what works best for you. - Create a diet rich in anti-inflammatory foods and spices. For a majority

of people, inflammation tends to be induced by consuming inflammatory foods. The best way to combat arthritis pain is by building a diet rich in foods with vitamin K. Following the Mediterranean diet is known for helping with inflammation due to the emphasis on fresh, whole foods with many vitamins and minerals to keep your body healthy. For an added punch, season your dishes with turmeric, ginger and garlic to further prevent any flare-ups. Not only do these each have antiinflammatory properties, but they also contain antioxidants to help further fight free radicals within the body. Add a dash of turmeric to a side dish of green vegetables or chicken-based meals for an undetectable antiinflammatory effect. Be sure to check with your doctor before trying out any of these solutions. What works for most people does not necessarily work for all. Keep yourself healthy doing what your body prefers. Visit arthritis.org for more information and ways to relieve pain naturally or prevent arthritis.

CREATIVE CORNER Two Sisters, Two Phones By: Cindy Sampson

Two sisters, two phones,

Indicating that victory may be near.

Set out on a mission on their own.

But, all was not keen,

They attempted the task

The screen was mean.

Of printing a boarding pass.

It wasn’t printing despite the hinting.

They used a pin, logging in. Upon the screen the pass did appear,

Refusing defeat, declaring that this Obstacle they would beat,

The sisters kept clicking & snapping, Till a technological sound signaled A Happening. Eventually, each sister was a happy lass, Together, they printed a boarding pass.

For submissions: Send your poem (150 words or less) to editor@lifestylesafter50.com with the words “Creative Corner” in the subject line.

Lee County Teen Makes it to American Idol Top 12 Information and image from ABC7 Casey Bishop, 16-year-old Lee County resident and American Idol contestant, has made it to the Top 12, earning her place over hundreds of other competing singers. “I’m learning to really enjoy it all and just have fun,” Casey explained. “Kinda sing like this is my last time because no one is safe here.” When she is home in Southwest Florida, according to ABC7, she likes to go to Bonita Beach, each chocolate cake, and hang out at Cantina Laredo. Her favorite dish consists of three hard shell ground beef tacos with a side of rice and beans. But, she usually doesn’t miss a day without eating French fries.

Anchorage • Talkeetna • Healy (Denali) • Fairbanks — Travel deep into the rugged Alaskan wilderness in pursuit of nature’s most spectacular nighttime display. Chase after the vibrant lights of the aurora borealis while you enjoy Alaska’s culture, nature, and wildlife.

“Truffle. Crispy. All fries. I love all fries. I eat fries every day,” she said. She also loves her mom’s home cooking. Her favorite dish: lemon chicken with lemon-garlic rice. On performance day, she stays away from eggs because they give her a stomach ache. She tries to eat two hours before being on stage, something light like a chicken Caesar salad. “I don’t want to burp on stage,” she laughed. “Or burp on stage out of hunger, that can happen!” Just like any teen, she is a little rebellious, admitting to sneaking out of her house before. “It was a long time ago, it’s fine, and I got in a lot of trouble,” she admitted. Casey remembers doing karaoke at Shoeless Joe’s sports bar back when she was 10 years old. She sang Adele’s “Someone Like You” to a crown full of adults. The memory made her realize how many young singers could be looking up to her now, aspiring to be like her. “If you want something, you can definitely get it. I never expected to get here. Everything happens for a reason.” To keep up with Casey on her American Idol journey, tune in Sunday at 8 pm.
