Honoring Veterans Day By Col. Leslie L. Megyeri
Veterans Day is a time for us to pay our respects to those who have served our nation. The holiday started as a day to reflect upon the heroism of those who died in our country’s service. It was originally called Armistice Day and fell on Nov. 11 because that is the anniversary of the signing of the Armistice that ended World War I. However, in 1954, the holiday was changed to “Veterans Day” in order to account for all veterans of all wars. Each year, I commemorate Veterans Day at a different veterans’ cemetery. I have written about my previous visits for Lifestyles. Last year, I went to the Sarasota National Cemetery, and the previous year, I went to Arlington National Cemetery near Washington, DC. This year, I will visit the Gettysburg National Cemetery in Gettysburg, PA, which was created for Union casualties from the Battle of Gettysburg in the American Civil War, fought between July 1 and 3, 1863, and which resulted in the largest number of casualties of any Civil War battle. It was also considered the war’s turning point, leading ultimately to Union victory. Originally called Soldiers’ National Cemetery, the 16th U.S. President Abraham Lincoln delivered his Gettysburg Address at the cemetery’s consecration on Nov. 19, 1863. That day is observed annually in town and at the cemetery with a parade, procession and memorial ceremonies by thousands of Civil War re-enactors, both of the Union Army and the Confederate States
Army. The cemetery contains 3,512 interments, including the graves of 979 unknown soldiers and the remains of American soldiers and dependents from the Civil War to the Vietnam War. Monuments, memorials and markers are scattered throughout and its stone walls, iron fences and gates, brick sidewalks and section markers make this the most visited site in the area. The centerpiece is the Soldiers’ National Monument, a 60-foot-tall granite shrine surrounded by a concentric semicircle of graves. President Dwight Eisenhower was a dignitary in the Remembrance Day activities at the cemetery in 1963, and his retirement home is adjacent to the battlefield. You may wonder why I visit a different national cemetery each Veterans’ Day. It’s because I saw firsthand too many whose remains were returned from the Vietnam War and whose service was not fully recognized. In some small way, I hope my gravesite visits will set an example for others to perhaps do the same or at least take a moment to say “thank you.” Col. Megyeri lives part-time in Venice, FL, and is a retired attorney and CPA. He recommends that if readers visit Gettysburg, they also see the newly opened World War II Museum, the Eisenhower Home and the Wills House, the home of attorney David Wills which was the center of the immense clean-up process after the Battle of Gettysburg and where plans were made for a Soldiers’ National Cemetery.

What Women Need to Know About Stroke Risks From Family Features It may not be widely known that women face unique risk factors for stroke throughout their lifetime. Things like pregnancy, pre-eclampsia and chronic stress can increase the risk for high blood pressure, a leading cause of stroke. Cardiovascular disease, including stroke, is the leading cause of death among women, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), and 1 in 5 women will have a stroke. However, a large majority of strokes can be prevented. Start managing your stroke risk with these tips from the American Stroke Association, a division of the American Heart Association: Monitor Your Blood Pressure The first step you can take in reducing your risk for stroke is knowing your blood pressure and keeping it in a healthy range. High blood pressure is the No. 1 preventable cause of stroke, according to the American Heart Association. The best way to know your blood pressure is to have it measured at least once per year by a health care professional and regularly monitor it at home then discuss the numbers with a doctor. For most people, a normal blood pressure should be 120/80 mm HG or less. In addition to properly monitoring blood pressure, maintaining a healthy weight, being physically active, eating healthfully and reducing or eliminating alcohol and tobacco usage can help control blood pressure. If you do develop high blood pressure, work with a health care professional on a plan to help manage it. Learn the Warning Signs •
A stroke can happen to anyone at any point in life. Immediate treatment may help minimize the long-term effects of a stroke and even prevent death. Learn how to spot a stroke F.A.S.T:
•
Face drooping: Does one side of the face droop or is it numb? Ask the person to smile. Is the person’s smile uneven?
•
Arm weakness: Is one arm weak or numb? Ask the person to raise both arms. Does one arm drift downward?
•
Speech difficulty: Is speech slurred? Is the person unable to speak or hard to understand? Ask the person to repeat a simple sentence like “The sky is blue.”
•
Time to call 911: If someone shows any of these symptoms, even if the symptoms go away, call 911 and get to a hospital immediately. Check the time so you’ll know when the first symptoms appeared.

BOOK REVIEW “HERstory Quilts: A Celebration of Strong Women” by Susanne Miller Jones is a collection of 108 mixed-media fiber art pieces celebrates extraordinary women who influenced history, made discoveries or broke into fields dominated by men. Eighty-five artists from seven countries portray politicians, scientists, entertainers, environmentalists, athletes and authors. The medium of quilting features the advances women have made as the artists have honored their subjects in the most imaginative ways possible. Readers don’t have to quilt themselves to appreciate the workmanship highlighting this diverse group of women who achieved excellence and left their marks on us all. What is so admirable is that each artist tells her own story and the full photo of each quilt fills a whole page and includes a history of the woman celebrated with a quilt of the subject. We learn not only of the woman portrayed but of what the artist did to create the quilt. This gorgeous coffee table book is a great resource because it shows what imagination, fabric, inspiration, and workmanship
HERstory Quilts: A Celebration of Strong Women by Kathy A. Megyeri can accomplish, and as one reader said, ‘This book makes learning history a delightful experience as these inspirational stories about amazing women are accompanied by wonderful art quilts.” Author Jones began quilting after retiring from elementary school teaching for 17 years and her second career as fiber artist, curator, and author has blossomed. She’s curated several fiber art exhibits: “Fly Me to the Moon,” an art quilt journey to honor the Apollo astronauts’ missions and all things lunar that resulted in 179 fiber art pieces that toured the U.S. and Europe and resulted in a book, and “Ourstory; Human Rights Stories in Fabric” which premiered at the International Quilt Festival in Houston and then the book was published in 2019. As she traveled the world with her exhibits, Jones became friends with other fiber artists and selected the best for inclusion in this book. Bonnie McGuiness of Jacksonville, FL and a professional quilter adores this book. She said, “These women’s amazing stories are preserved in these gorgeous quilts and they are honored for their work by artists who not only chose them but also had the freedom to decide what to include in the quilt and then choose the medium to best express their art specific to the honorees. The quilts and the interpretation by the artists are absolutely incredible,” a real testimonial to the women subjects and the women quilters.
Movie Preview: Mickey: The Story of a Mouse BY RANDAL C. HILL
In 1928, when he was involved in a legal tussle with Universal Pictures, Walt Disney lost the rights to his cartoon creation Oswald the Lucky Rabbit. Disney then created a replacement cartoon figure: Mortimer Mouse. But Walt’s wife, Lillian, thought her husband would do better with the name Mickey Mouse instead. (Thank you, Lillian.) The world’s favorite rodent, whose simple head is composed of one large and two smaller circles, became an animation superstar with 1928’s Steamboat Willie, the first such release with synchronized sound. (Disney himself provided Mickey’s voice.) Mickey Mouse would in time be featured in over 130 of Walt’s films, including the starring role in 1940’s nowlegendary Fantasia. In 1978, Mickey became the first animated character to earn a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
particular, confesses, “It wasn’t just one continual success after success, it was stumble after stumble.” The Disney documentary explores the long-time global impact of Mickey Mouse over nearly a century, how the blithe little guy accompanied us through the Depression and served as a propaganda device during World War II, even becoming an image of hope during the Holocaust. Under the guidance of director Jeff Malmberg (Marwencol), we see that the passage of time brought different versions of Mickey, as well as the sometimes-surprising societal shifts that he came to represent. While the Disney Company has always concerned itself with protecting the images of its founder and his megaorganization, the documentary does admit—briefly—to making errors in judgment over the years, including Mickey being shown in blackface and offering negative depictions of Native Americans.
This and much more are covered in the superlative Disney+ Image from IMDb November streaming of Mickey: The Story of a Mouse. While In Mickey: The Story of a Mouse, we also get a one-minute short some viewers may dismiss it as a 93-minute commercial for feature (Mickey in a Minute) of our hero strolling down a hallway, reflecting on the corporation’s iconic animal, others will appreciate the little-known, behindposters of his past films until he is suddenly consumed by a vortex and becomes the-scenes tales of the Mickey saga. Here, long-time company animators discuss the many images we’ve seen over the decades. and display their work and explain various stages of the often-complex processes required to bring Mickey Mouse to his millions of fans. One veteran artist, in The examination of a true icon—fictional though he is—streams on November 18.

Abner, Margate, Florida ANSWER COLAs were first paid in 1975 as a result of a 1972 law QUESTION Are Social Security numbers reused after a person dies? L. Richardson, North Palm Beach, Florida ANSWER No. We do not reassign a Social Security number (SSN) after the number holder’s death, the current numbering system will provide us with enough new numbers for several generations into the future with no changes in the numbering system. QUESTION Are my disability benefit payments taxable? P. Whittman, Plantation, Florida ANSWER The answer to this question depends on what benefits you get and how much your total income is. If you receive Supplemental Security Income (SSI), you will owe no Federal or State taxes on this benefit. If you have other forms of income in addition to your SSI (such as wages) you may owe taxes on that income. If you receive Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI), you may have to pay taxes on your benefits, depending on how much your total income is. Your total income includes your Social Security benefits and any other income you received such as wages, interest income and rental income. Social Security reports that about one-third of current beneficiaries pay taxes on their disability benefits. If you are unsure about whether or not you have to pay taxes, contact the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) or seek the services of a qualified tax professional.

Dear Ms. Price, I am a 50-year-old woman who recently relocated to St. Petersburg from Pittsburgh, PA, where I was born and raised. Moving here was my lifelong dream. As much as I love my new home, I am feeling the loss of my old friends. Don’t get me wrong, the people here are super friendly, and I am trying to get out and socialize. I just haven’t settled into a groove and feel like something is missing in my life. Should I worry that I have no close friends? -Flying Solo Dear “Flying,” Congratulations on your move, and welcome to St. Petersburg. You’re entering an exciting phase of life, and part of that new chapter is the adventure of making new friends. You mentioned that you recently moved, so I assume it’s been less than a year. I would encourage you to be patient with yourself and the process. You mentioned that you are getting out there and meeting people, which is fantastic. You’re doing all the right things to build new friendships. Keep in mind that it is more challenging to forge close friendships as we age. As long as you’re putting in the effort, involving yourself in projects that bring you joy which will put you in the orbit of new, like-minded friends, you’re taking all the proper steps. I hope you’re keeping in touch with your precious friends from your past, as this will help to anchor you as you move forward in your new adventure. Best wishes to you!
A Slice of Advice with Ms. Price To submit your questions, email advicemsprice@gmail.com.
Dear Ms. Price, I am a single woman, 46 years old, and I have been working at the same business (a local bank) for over 10 years. I’m not currently in a romantic relationship, and it’s not something that is a priority for me. Lately, my coworkers have started to ask me about my dating and love life, insinuating that my time is up and I should be getting serious about settling down. How should I answer these nosy busybodies? -MYOBeeswax in Clearwater Dear “Beeswax” How rude! Nosy busybodies are certainly irritating. My best advice is to stay professional and positive but keep your boundaries firm. Just because someone asks a question does not obligate you to answer. A brief response, “I don’t discuss my personal life at work, but thank you for your interest,” should suffice. When asked about her love life, Cameron Diaz replied, “I’m in love with life.” -Ms. Price

ONCE WAYWARD BABY BOOMERS FIND REDEMPTION THROUGH EXPUNGEMENT by William R. Mumbauer - Attorney - www.flwillstrustsprobate.com
Baby Boomers now in their 50’s and 60’s and beyond may be unpleasantly surprised to learn that their “youthful indiscretions” may follow them even into their golden years. Baby Boomers hoping to downsize are sometimes shocked to find that they have been denied an apartment lease because of that unfortunate drug possession arrest from their college partying days forty years earlier. Or perhaps they are denied that parttime cashier’s job at the corner hardware store desperately needed to supplement meager retirement savings because of that long forgotten shoplifting charge incurred as a teenager. A criminal record can even result in higher auto insurance premiums and higher interest payments on consumer loans, often without the person even knowing they are being singled out to pay more. Despite the fact that one’s criminal record may be very old and even if the charges were dropped or a formal adjudication of guilt withheld, the criminal charge remains a public record for one’s lifetime. In part due to the present economy, landlords, employers, insurance companies, credit card companies and banks, to name a few, are ferreting out and scrutinizing unflattering public information now more than ever.
for those who, because they are entering a more mature stage in life, simply desire that their slate finally be wiped clean. Florida law permits an individual who meets certain statutory criteria to petition the Court to have his or her criminal record expunged. Expungement means that the criminal record is physically destroyed. Sometimes, an individual may not qualify for an expungement but may still qualify to have his or her criminal record “sealed”. Sealing means the criminal record remains physically intact, but it is sealed from public view. The sealed criminal record can only be made public again through an extraordinary Court Order finding a “compelling public need” to reopen the criminal record to public view. With very specific exceptions, an individual who has successfully had his criminal record expunged or sealed is entitled to legally deny that the criminal charges ever existed. If you are experiencing repercussions or are just embarrassed because of a single mistake made many years ago, it makes sense to discuss your particular situation with an attorney knowledgeable in this area of the law. If you do qualify to have your criminal record expunged or sealed, your attendance at the court hearing is usually not required.
But there may be hope for those whose criminal history is now causing problems or

Make more memories this Christmas at Gaylord Palms It’s on everyone’s mind this season: what do I buy the person who has everything? We want more for them than trinkets that may break in a few months, baubles that will get lost under the bed, and technology that will soon be obsolete. This Christmas, why not give the gift of time together, family fun, and memories that will last long after the wrapping paper is tossed? Give the gifts of experiences, travel, and adventure. Close to home, but worlds apart Located in Central Florida minutes from Orlando’s world-famous theme parks and attractions, Gaylord Palms is a perfect choice for families looking for a fun holiday getaway close to home. From Nov. 18 through Jan. 1, 2023, the resort will be transformed into a winter wonderland. Millions of lights will twinkle, more than 100 trees will sparkle, and hours of festive entertainment and activities will be offered for all ages.
For the thrill seekers: Hop on a tube and race friends down a snow-covered hill. Put those sleuthing skills to the test in our Naughty or Nice Escape Room. Build and toss real snowballs at Snowball Build and Blast. For the chill seekers: Let your creativity run wild at the Gingerbread Decorating Corner. At Elf Training Academy, create a keepsake craft and learn how to become one of Santa’s helpers. Enjoy a cookie, sing along to holiday songs, and listen to a Christmas tale at Mrs. Claus’ Christmas Traditions. SO. MUCH. CHRISTMAS. After a festive day of memory making, unwind with a meal at Old Hickory Steakhouse, MOOR, or Villa de Flora before seeing the holidays come to life in the amazing acrobatic feats of Cirque: Spirit of Christmas show.
And while Gaylord Palms itself can’t be wrapped and placed under the tree – with more than 1,700 guest rooms and suites it would be a tight fit – event and attraction tickets make great stocking stuffers. An overnight stay would certainly make your heart grow three sizes! ICE! featuring Dr. Seuss’ How The Grinch Stole Christmas!™ The coolest attraction of all, however, is ICE! featuring Dr. Seuss’ How The Grinch Stole Christmas!™. This holiday spectacle, kept at a frosty 9 degrees and hand carved by artisans out of 2 million pounds of brightly colored ice, is back after a two-year hiatus. And there’s no need to pack your coats! Even though it’s cool inside, Gaylord Palms provides parkas to keep guests toasty as they zoom down epic ice slides, marvel at larger-than-life displays, and wander through the winter wonderland. Festive fun for all With signature events like ICE! and the popular Cirque: Spirit of Christmas show, classic holiday activities including photos with Santa, and thrilling experiences like ice tubing, there’s something for everyone to enjoy during SO. MUCH. CHRISTMAS. at Gaylord Palms Resort.

There’s no better way to celebrate the holidays than by gathering at Gaylord Palms Resort. This season, give a gift that can’t be wrapped but will be remembered forever. Unwrap the magic of Christmas at Gaylord Palms.
Better Health. It’s About Time. The VIPcare Patient Experience Going to see your doctor is probably never on your list of things to do for fun; however, it’s important in maintaining your health, especially for adults 65 and older. Patients who have an ongoing relationship with their primary care physician have fewer unnecessary trips to the ER. That’s why you need a doctor that you’re comfortable with and who you trust. One you can turn to 24/7. Quality over Quantity It can be hard to find that doctor with whom you truly connect. Healthcare has become so rushed. It’s like doctors compete to see the most patients. Sadly, that doesn’t leave much time for one-on-one time. That was the key difference Dan and Tina DiFrancesco noticed with VIPcare after moving from Pennsylvania. “They make you feel like you’re the only one,” Tina said. “It’s really the first doctor that I’ve had like that.”
experience upon switching. “The doctors, they care,” he said. “You get an X-ray or something, they call you, ‘how did you make out.’” By taking the time to know you and your health history, your primary care physician can provide you with the specialized care you need and deserve. No more running around from doctor to doctor for answers. Your doctor is your direct link to comprehensive care. “The whole office, they follow up,” Tina said about her VIPcare experience. “The next day they’re on the phone with you. It’s great.” Your Journey to Better Health Real health care is getting you healthy and keeping you healthy. Find a trusted partner in your health and get the care and attention you deserve.
Time for a Better Experience Dan had two doctors before visiting VIPcare. He admits they were nice but immediately noticed a different

Urinary Issues in Cats By Sarah Hilario, DVM Many pet owners bring their feline friends to the veterinary hospital for examination due to the common symptom of urinating outside the litter box. Other signs that cats may also show include straining to urinate, a blood tinge to the urine, excessive grooming around the urinary area, or even crying out when urinating. The first thought that comes to most people’s mind is usually a urinary tract infection (UTI). However, UTI’s are actually somewhat uncommon in cats under 10 years of age. Bladder stones, tumors, obstructions of the urinary tract, and any type of inflammation can also cause a cat to urinate inappropriately. Some cats may be exhibiting behavioral problems as well. The first step that veterinarians will usually perform, after a history and physical examination, is a urinalysis. This test can screen for UTIs, early renal disease, diabetes, and inflammation of the bladder. An abdominal x-ray may also be taken to look for bladder or kidney stones. When extensive testing has been performed and a specific cause cannot be determined, these cats may have a condition called Feline Lower Urinary Tract Disease or FLUTD. Unfortunately, there is no specific test or cure for this disease yet. Some cat’s symptoms will completely resolve after five to ten days without any specific treatment. However, recurrence is very
common. Long term treatment includes decreasing stress in the household, providing extra litter boxes, increasing water intake, and giving oral medications. The treatment for cats with specific urinary issues depends on the cause. Cats with UTI’s are typically given antibiotics. Bladder stones are sometimes dissolvable with prescription diets, other stones need to be removed surgically. Obstructions of the urinary tract are more common in male cats. These typically require a urinary catheter and several days in the hospital. It is important to remember that most of these conditions are not life threatening except for a blockage. In a male cat that is having urinary symptoms, they need to be evaluated by a veterinarian immediately. Urinary issues can be frustrating but with the proper tests and treatment they are very manageable.
Boyette Animal Hospital is proud to provide your pets with the highest quality of treatment and care from twelve veterinarians and a devoted staff. To make an appointment, please call (813) 671-3400.
