Verily THE LAST STOP BEFORE HEAVEN This was how a neighbor once described our 55+ community to me: “There is a certain heavy truck rumble I hear several times a week, very distinguishable from any other large truck, including garbage trucks. You could be blindfolded, and you’d identify it immediately. It’s the huge fire rescue truck that always accompanies an ambulance or an EMT vehicle. There are no sirens. These are silenced before the trucks enter the front gate. If it’s at night, the sky is momentarily lit up a bright red from the flashing lights.” I observed my dad in Virginia, crossing himself whenever an ambulance would pass by. He was an Episcopal priest. I don’t cross myself, but I do say a quick silent prayer that the occupant survives their ordeal, and not just as a vegetable. The Joy of my Life has had several such rides over the course of time, the last one being June of last year. Under the circumstances, I was permitted to ride with her to the hospital, in spite of COVID-19 being at a peak. I was seated next to the driver. Before being loaded into the vehicle, she asked one of the EMT crewmembers “Can you give me something for the pain?” and he said “Honey, this won’t stop the pain, but you won’t care, one way or the other”. I have no clue as to what he injected, possibly ketamine, I don’t know. I must explain, she and I have been Dr. Who fans from back when Tom Baker was The Doctor, and at this time Jodie Whittaker had not yet been announced as the new Doctor. So, after we were underway, what with all the mechanical noises, the bumpy ride, the flashing lights, and the drug, Joy thought she was aboard the Tardis. “Wow!” she said, “It really IS bigger on the inside than it is on the outside!” “Are you the new Doctor?” she asked the attendant at her side. “Honey, I’ll be whoever you want me to be!” “Okay then, you’re the new Doctor!” “Mikey, are you here?” “Yes, baby! I’m driving!” I yelled back to her. “Oh, noooo you’re not! Then we’re in BIG trouble!” Before the day was over, she would have not only an ambulance ride, but a helicopter ride to a different hospital. It’s been a long year and a half haul.
