A Healthy Holiday Season Ahead Life is full of changes and adaptation, something we are reminded of with the turning of the seasons. Although Florida doesn’t show the dramatic flaming end of summer seen in northern areas of the country, we can still feel the slight chill to the air that means the busiest time of the year is coming.

With holidays like Halloween, Thanksgiving, Black Friday (hey, that’s a major holiday for us shopaholics), Hanukkah, Christmas and New Year’s, responsibilities and schedules fill up quick. My best advice is to tackle at least one holiday-related preparation task each day that you’re able.

Whether it’s buying a gift that you know you want to get for a person, planning out a menu or even booking a flight to somewhere, ticking off the to-do list one thing at a time is the only to get it all done. Or at least, all done without tearing your hair out.

And in between those times of running around and figuring out a schedule for the months to come, be sure to just breathe in the fresh autumn air. This doesn’t have to be literal, although it definitely can be. Enjoying this fleeting time of year can include simply being outside more, possibly with evening walks after dinner. I remember reading a while back that walking for 15 minutes after eating is a great way to help your body better digest food and helps regulate your blood sugar. This is likely because your body must immediately use the fuel

just consumed to keep energy levels elevated for exercise, so carbohydrates are quickly moved through your body.

Don’t quote me on that; it’s just a best guess.

This method of lowering blood glucose post-dinner is especially great for after bigger meals like Thanksgiving dinner.

Once everyone at the table has eaten their fill, let the leftovers cool off, and the dishes sit. Go for a walk around the neighborhood! I promise the benefits of walking outweigh any trouble cakedon mashed potatoes or solidified candied yams may pose when it comes time for rinsing dishes.

Exercising by walking after indulging in Halloween treats and candy can also be extremely useful. Given that sweet treats are typically comprised of solely sugars, the walking method after indulging in dessert or sweet snacks is an excellent one. If you’re lucky enough, sweets may actually add a boost of energy to your walk and turn it into a light jog. But we won’t get ahead of ourselves—a nice walk does just as well and won’t run you the risk of midsection cramps.

No matter how you plan on spending your October, always be sure to leave some time for just you. Treat yourself to quiet time, a beach day or even make yourself your favorite comfort meal. After all, fall is the time to get cozy and focus on self-care.

QUICK MEDICARE OPEN ENROLLMENT TIPS

BY REBECCA FENDING Medicare Open Enrollment season will be here starting October 15 and ending December 7. Although seniors do not need to do anything unless they are looking for a better plan, it’s still good to cover general tips for the season. Figuring out what’s best for your healthcare needs may feel like a daunting task, but forming a game plan for what you need, want or anticipate for the new year is a great way to keep your head above water. Here are just a few basic tips as we head into open enrollment season, whether you have traditional Medicare or an Advantage Plan: 1. Review Your Current Coverages: Although you may feel content with your current Medicare state, now is a good time to doublecheck for any changes that may take place in 2022. Coverages change from year to year, so take the time to review exactly what your current costs are versus what they may cost in the new year.

2. Review Your Current Prescriptions: Medicare drug plans file medications in different tiers based on the type of medication and other factors. The tier in which your medication is categorized can drastically affect its price, so be sure to check that your current prescriptions will remain at a budget-friendly price next year.

3. Seek Help or Recommendations: Reviewing your Medicare needs can be overwhelming, especially if you can’t find exactly what you need for 2022. State Health Insurance Assistance Program (SHIP) offers free insurance counseling for Medicare beneficiaries. Like with most things, having a second set of eyes review your options may make you feel more confident when locking in your final choice.

Here are a few resources you can use to help you find the Medicare plan that best fits your needs: • Medicare Official Website: The official website for Medicare is www.Medicare.gov. Here, seniors can find a plethora of resources and various Medicare information directly from the government. Under the “Basics” tab, seniors can find the resources to talk to a professional advisor, the “Medicare and You” handbook and lots of other resources for open enrollment season.

• Medicare Plan Finder: Visit www.Medicare.gov. In the options bar at the top right of the page, find “Health & Drug Plans.”

From the drop-down menu, choose the “Find health & drug plan” option.

• State Health Insurance Assistance Program (SHIP): As mentioned before, SHIP is another free resource with trained professionals who advise seniors in the process of choosing a Medicare plan for the new year.

by Cher BY: RANDAL C. HILL Thomas “Snuff” Garrett was a Dallas high school dropout who became a Lubbock, Texas, disc jockey at age 17 and befriended local music star Buddy Holly. Two years later, Garrett became a staff producer at Liberty Records in Los Angeles. Snuff wasn’t a musician, but he did have the uncanny knack of finding—and later producing—hit songs.

Snuff lived in the Hollywood Hills, next door to Salvatore and Cherilyn Bono— better known in the entertainment world as Sonny and Cher. In 1965, the husband-and-wife duo had rocketed to international fame when their Atco single “I Got You Babe” became one of the biggest pop successes of the decade.

But two years later, neither the pair together nor Cher on her own found themselves putting out any hits. Then, in 1971, Cher signed with Kapp Records, hopeful of finding a successful song that would return her to prominence.

Garrett asked songwriter pal Bob Stone to come up with something noteworthy that would bring Cher a hit and an audience beyond teenyboppers. Stone responded with an adult-level story-song called “Gypsies and White Trash.”

Garrett sensed that Stone’s creation had hit potential but obviously needed some tweaking in order to avoid controversy. The result was one of the finest pop tunes of Cher’s career—and one she never really liked.

The melodramatic “Gypsies, Tramps & Thieves” unfolds at near-breakneck speed—it lasts just two-and-a-half minutes—but unfurls a poignant tale of poverty and misfortune.

Fall Family Sleuthing

As we enter another fall season, we are hopefully edging closer to safe holidays with family members.

Looking into family history and finding where our ancestors lived and worked can be an amusing and gratifying autumn activity for all to share and enjoy around the dinner table this year.

My mother traveled with my dad’s cousin to the Cleveland Public Library and the courthouse in the early 1990s to research the family records on both the maternal and paternal sides. From the information she amassed came four thick books full of documents and photos which elucidated our ancestors’ lives, occupations and interests.

A good place to start is the main public library and courthouse in the city where your family member lived, but other sources are the following: 1. Start at the library to look for old directories. City directories are good for providing addresses and phone numbers. Professional organizations and social clubs often publish member directories.

2. Your ancestors who were in military service in the 1900s were often listed in military directories in alphabetical order by last name. Their military occupation and home address at the time may be included, especially if pensions were mailed.

3. Old newspapers are a great source, as they give clues as to who was entertaining or traveling out of town. Genealogist Karen Fortin calls those old newspapers the Facebook of their day.

8. You may discover that the family saved mortgage receipts once paid and proudly saved the deed to their finally paid-off home.

4. Obituary and public notices can help your search as addresses may be provided in case there were any outstanding debts to track down for payment.

9. In the late 1800s and early 1900s, many extended family members lived close by so they could easily stay in close touch.

Once you determine the addresses, you can be on your way to verifying through Google Maps the family neighborhood they were so proud to establish. Your sleuthing will pay off!

5. Court records can also provide addresses if the relative ever served on a jury. Also, since 1880, street names have been named in the census reports every 10 years.

6. Travel records for citizens going abroad are available if the relative ever applied for a passport or Visa.

7. Your family papers may turn out to be a treasure trove for your address search. For example, postcards mailed to a specific

“The Day I Died”

On November 22, 1963, entertainer Vaughn Meader got into a cab at the Milwaukee airport. He later recalled, “The cabbie said, ‘Did you hear about Kennedy in Dallas?’” “I said to him, ‘No, how does it go?’ I thought he was telling me a joke.”

Then Vaughn heard the tragic bulletin on the taxi’s radio. He would refer to it later as “the day I died.”

Famous because of numerous TV appearances and with his face adorning millions of records and album covers, he was used to being recognized as America’s top mimic of the president.

In the early 1960s, the New Englander began including JFK impersonations in a musical comedy act he developed for the Greenwich Village club circuit. Meader found it easy to assume the president’s distinctive accent and persona, and in time even adopted the iconic leader’s hairstyle.

Meader’s debut comedy LP from November 1962 was dubbed “The First Family.” Written by Bob Booker and Earle Doud, the good-natured Cadence Records parody featured 26-yearold Vaughn supplying the voices of both JFK and his brother Robert, while Jackie Kennedy was portrayed by theater actress Naomi Brossart. A supporting cast of New York character actors completed the fun.

Tapping into the public’s fascination with the Kennedys, “The First Family,” recorded live before a studio audience, quickly became the fastest-selling album in the history of the record industry.

It locked down the top position on the Billboard LP charts for a dozen weeks and by January 1963 had sold 7 million copies.

Eventually, it earned a Grammy Award. A March 1963 sequel, “The First Family Volume Two,” became a second hit.

President Kennedy had reportedly enjoyed the sendup—Jackie, not so much—and went so far as to hand out copies of the first LP as Christmas gifts.

On that infamous November Friday afternoon, celebrity Vaughn Meader vanished and was reborn as anonymous Abbott Meader.

(Vaughn was his middle name.) Copies of his discs were yanked from record-store shelves and destroyed, Cadence Records not wanting to appear to be “cashing in” on the tragedy. Meader

never did his JFK impression again.

For the next few years, he drifted in and out of alcoholism and drug abuse. In the late 1960s, he experienced a religious awakening and in 1970 recorded an album called “The Second Coming,” on which he played a hip Jesus. It didn’t sell.

Meader married four times and divorced three. In later years, he managed a restaurant in Hallowell, Maine, where he became a part-time singing pianist who offered sometimes-perplexed customers a peculiar mix of gospel and bluegrass tunes.

A lifelong smoker, Meader developed chronic pulmonary disease.

In order to help pay his mounting medical expenses, he sold the movie rights to his life story. The film was never made.

He died at age 68 in October 2004, his little-noted passing a far cry from the time when JFK greeted a Democratic Party-event crowd by wryly announcing with a grin, “Vaughn Meader was busy tonight, so I came myself.”

Slow Cooker Broccoli Cheddar Soup

‘Tis the season for soup! With the official start of fall behind us, most folks are rotating their yearly recipe Rolodex to reflect the seasonal change. Soup is one of those dishes that’s hard to refuse, but even harder as the temperatures begin to drop and the autumnal decorations make their appearance.

Besides maybe chicken noodle, it seems like the common

denominator when it comes to hearty and comforting soups is broccoli cheddar. Nutritious, flavorful and so satisfying, has anyone ever refused a bowl of this homemade soup before? The best part of this recipe is that it’s truly a “set it and forget it” lunch or dinner—load the ingredients into your slow cooker, set it to low and walk away. As an added bonus with any soup, this is an amazing leftover dish, too!

Ingredients and supplies: • 10 oz. bag of frozen broccoli florets, or two heads of fresh broccoli • ¼ cup chopped sweet onion • 2 tablespoons butter • 2 cups of freshly shredded sharp cheddar

• 4 cups milk (whole or 2% work best) • 2 teaspoons garlic powder • Salt and pepper to taste

1. Add broccoli, onions, butter and cheese to a six-quart slow cooker.

2. Pour milk over top of the ingredients.

Add in your garlic powder, salt and pepper.

Dear Ms. Price, My husband is in hospice and is nearing the end of his life. We have been blessed with a wonderful marriage and life together. I admit that I am feeling so many things from shock, despair and confusion.

I am surrounded by my loving friends who want to help, but there are some friends who don’t seem to know what to say or what to do. Some people avoid me, which I understand. I’d like to share some words of wisdom as to how to reach out to a friend when they’re going through a death of a loved one: 1. Do reach out. Yes, you might not know what to say, but just being there provides so much comfort. Even if you don’t know the person very well, every kindness means more than you’ll ever know. I had someone I barely know send me a sweet text, and I can’t tell you how that brightened my day.

2. Read the room. Once you’ve said something, read the reaction. I admit that it’s all up and down. One moment I am social and the next I can barely sit up. If your loved one doesn’t respond, give a hug and come back later.

3. Express love and support in the way you feel comfortable. From baking cookies, to sending a card, holding my hand, crying with me or lending a shoulder, it all means so much.

4. Listen. Ask open-ended questions and lend a listening ear.

5. Say the “D” word. I’m not sure if this is just me, but call it what it is; “death.” It’s not “passing away” or being “lost.” It’s death and it sucks.

Movie Preview: Dune

In 1957, an Oregon newspaperman/sci-fi magazine writer named Frank Herbert made a trip to the town of Florence, Oregon. He was there to gather information for a feature story about the wide-ranging sand dunes, shore pine trees and beach grass that encompassed 40 miles of the central Oregon coast. What he saw inspired a story idea about a barren, distant planet called Arrakis.

The feature story was never written. Herbert spent six years creating Dune, then endured rejection from 20 publishers before the Chilton Company (best known for its auto-repair manuals) accepted Herbert’s massive manuscript in 1965. Dune ultimately became the world’s most popular sci-fi novel ever. Five sequels also became best-sellers, but none would contain the impact of the original.

Seven attempts have been made to bring Dune to the big screen, the only commercial release until now being the critically trashed box-office bomb by David Lynch in 1984.

Roger Ebert would proclaim it “a real mess.”

The 2021 Dune is a new adaptation rather than a remake Image from IMDb of Lynch’s work, and the early buzz has WINNER writ large all over it. Director Denis Villeneuve (Blade Runner 2049, Arrival) has managed to breathe life into Herbert’s opus in a way that most audience members will easily be able to follow the complex—some would even say convoluted—Dune story line.

The focus of Herbert’s 772-page epic is on young Paul Atreides (rising star Timothee Chalamet, whose breakout role came in Call Me by Your Name). He’s a brilliant young man whose family has taken on the stewardship of Arrakis, a planet considered the most dangerous—and coveted—in the universe. Arrakis is the only source of mélange, the most precious resource in existence, a spicy drug that manages to unlock humanity’s greatest potential.

Not surprisingly, powerful and ruthless forces seek to wrest control of Arrakis and reap the benefits of mélange as well as control its trade. Atreides, born to fulfill a family prophesy, realizes he must conquer his near-crippling fears to effectively vanquish seemingly insurmountable foes.

The Warner Brothers film was, as with so many movies, delayed in 2020 because of the pandemic. Herbert’s honored creation—it won the inaugural Nebula Award for Best Novel—is now scheduled to open in theaters and on HBO Max on October 22.

Drawing on elements of ecology, philosophy and adventure, and powered by mind-bending psychedelic special effects, Villeneuve’s offering (budgeted at $200 million) will cover the first two thirds of Herbert’s tome; part two will conclude with the remainder of the story.

I am slow. Just ask The Joy of my Life. I inherited the slow gene from my dad, as well as diabetes. He once explained to me his philosophy of “slow.” If you are slow, you are actually the one in control because everybody else has to wait for you and otherwise accommodate you. That may have been true back in his day, but not necessarily in mine, and definitely not since I found the Joy of my Life.

Another thing I inherited from Dad is my sense of humor. They say, “The pun is the lowest form of humor,” and I am unashamedly a hopeless punster.

It’s both a blessing (among other punsters) and a curse (among everybody else). When we were together in his later years, Dad and I would play off of each other for minutes at a time, much to the non-enjoyment of anyone else within earshot. I have a friend in St. Augustine who is of the same breed. We talked years ago about getting together over a meal or an adult beverage and engage in a pun-off.

My Dad’s penchant (punchant?) for puns is another reason for my dashboard tribute.

For years, the dashboard of Dad’s car was decorated with a single stuffed animal of some sort, similar to a large, fluffy Beanie Baby. This one had a hypodermic needle sticking out of its body since Dad took insulin.

One day while visiting him, I asked, “Dad! What is that thing you have sitting on the dashboard of your car?

“Oh that?!” he responded in his best I-thought-you would-never-ask voice.

“Why that’s just a Furry with the Syringe on Top.” If this makes sense to you, you’ve just dated yourself.
