The Season of Giving and Leaving Behind December is finally here. Our snowbird friends have joined us for the winter, and we’re buckling in for various holiday celebrations and bracing ourselves for the continuance of dropping temperatures. You may have started planning out your month between finances, travel and managing the dwindling hours of sunlight in order to stay organized during the jolliest time of the year. You might also be wondering what would make a perfect gift for that one person (or people) that seem to be impossible to shop for.

If you’re anything like me, you try to think outside the box for holiday gifts. Whether it be uber personalized, funny, practical or something you know they would never buy for themselves, picking the right gift can be a challenge. One great idea is searching for a book to pique their interest. From adventure to suspense, or even educational, there’s a book of every genre and topic that is sure to be a terrific gift.

Lifestyles presents a book giving guide yearround, more or less. Kathy Megyeri’s monthly book reviews act as a great, in-depth guide to books for any reader. From her reviews earlier this year, including a review of Marjorie Merriweather Post’s life of philanthropy by Estella M. Among the joyful and comforting holidays held in December is New Year’s. Not only is New Year’s the birth of a new year (go figure, huh?), but it also allows us to view our lives with a critical eye. Many folks start thinking about their resolutions for this universal fresh start.

Although there are always the classics such as losing weight, exercising more frequently or eating healthier, some folks begin their planning of creating a legacy to leave behind.

“Creating a legacy” may sound intimidating, but really it translates to, “What will people remember of me after I’m gone?” This might send some of us spiraling as we believe that we haven’t done enough to give back or make a name for themselves, but really, there’s no right or wrong answer to this question.

Leaving your own legacy behind can be as simple as volunteering at your local animal shelter, food pantry Christmas drive or getting involved with the planning of a local event. It can also mean donating or leaving behind a sum of money to an organization or cause of your choice. You don’t have to be a millionaire or Mother Teresa in order to create your own legacy, get involved and give back any way you feel most comfortable. Leaving Your Legacy BY: LES MEGYERI

A legacy is what we leave behind. We might think of it as our mission or life purpose. At any time, our legacy is a summary of who we are and how we will be remembered should we die at this moment. It’s never too soon to think of legacies as they’re not bound by age or time served.

At this time of year, many people are concerned with making New Year’s resolutions or planning for 2021. But there is one significant item you may not have considered yet which is creating your own legacy.

Everyone has a choice of leaving a positive legacy or a negative one. Most people never consciously choose one or the other; it just happens. But the goal should be for you to make a conscious decision about the legacy you leave. You should think this through by yourself because you are the only one who really knows your likes and dislikes, the goals and the life experiences you had. Do you want to create a family legacy? Invest in your grandchildren’s education? Leave funds to a charity that you are attached to? Once you decide the course of action you will take, it is time to consult an estate attorney.

Alfred Nobel bequeathed his estate for annual prizes, “... to those who during the preceding year have conferred the greatest benefit to humankind,” and prizes are awarded in the fields of physics, chemistry, medicine, physiology, literature and peace. Actor Sean Connery often donated his movie payments to the Scottish International Trust, an organization he

helped start, to offer grants to young artists. Everyone knows of country singer Dolly Parton’s legacy, specifically her Imagination Library founded in 1995, where one new book is sent each month until a child is five years old resulting in 60 books to motivate, inspire and encourage creativity. As of this year, 100 million books have been donated. In 2016, she also gave each Tennessee wildfire survivor a stipend of $1,000 a month. Her newest legacy has been to establish a million-dollar convalescent plasma study at Vanderbilt University for COVID-19 research.

But you don’t have to be a Nobel, Connery or Parton to leave a lasting legacy. Think of charities you care about. A gentleman who wanted to remain anonymous just left the Bedford, PA Humane Society a sizeable sum from his estate for a new headquarters building.

My own father-in-law left a sizeable amount to the American Legion in his town to buy transport vehicles to take veterans to the VA hospital in St. Paul, MN. A pig farmer in Owatonna, MN left his home to a 4-H chapter to become their local headquarters. I personally established a scholarship fund at my law school in the name of my favorite professor who helped me get my first job and started me on a successful career. Find an organization or charity that you most care about and your legacy will benefit others in years to come.

by William R. Mumbauer Attorney - www.flwillstrustsprobate.com A reader asks: I am considering having a revocable “Living” Trust prepared.

Could there be any negative consequences to transferring title to my homestead real property to this kind of Trust?

Response: In most cases there are no negative consequences to transferring title to homestead real property to a revocable “Living” Trust.

And in those rare situations where there could be negative consequences, any problems are usually solved by simply transferring the homestead real property back into the individual name of the original owner.

The following are examples of situations in which having title to homestead real property in a revocable “Living” Trust could be problematic: • The original owner is trying to qualify for MEDICAID. If the homestead real property remains in the individual name of the person seeking MEDICAID, the first $500,000 of equity in the homestead real property is not taken into consideration for determining MEDICAID eligibility. However, if title to the same homestead real property is in a revocable “Living” Trust, the entire amount of equity in the homestead real property is counted as an asset for MEDICAID eligibility purposes; • Some lending institutions will not allow homestead real property to be used as collateral for a new mortgage if title to homestead real property is in a revocable “Living” Trust;

• Some Florida counties refuse to issue a building permit to an original owner for construction work on homestead real property when the original owner is acting as his own general contractor if title to homestead real property is in a revocable “Living” Trust; and • An original owner with a permanent military disability will lose the military disability ad valorem tax exemption if title to the homestead real property is in a revocable “Living” Trust.

Aside from the above situations which will never apply to most folks, I am not aware of any negative consequences of transferring title to homestead real property to a revocable “Living” Trust.

Dear “Smithereens,” It’s time to set some new rules, my dear. I’m assuming you’ve already discussed this with your husband, but talk with him and show him the receipts along with a calendar logging their visits. Let him know that there will be changes, starting immediately.

When the next family asks to visit, let them know that there are new rules.

Make it clear that they are responsible for their laundry, cleaning up after themselves and for buying their own groceries. And, if someone wants to visit and it isn’t convenient, speak up and just say “no.”

I agree that when a life is at stake, as in removing sand dollars from the Gulf, it is not out of line to make a gentle remark such as, “I’m sure you’re just not aware, but it is illegal to remove live sand dollars from the water.” Leaving deep holes is also illegal, as well as a safety hazard. You could save your family the embarrassment and simply report it to the authorities.

As far as sitting in the water, I’m afraid that is first come, first served. They are not breaking any protocols. You need to arrive earlier or select another spot. I would save my kind corrections for illegal activities.

Knowing what to get people for the holidays can be difficult. But you can’t go wrong with gift cards, cash and books. These books make great gifts because a majority of us don’t ever get around to reading either because we don’t own them, or we don’t think to purchase them. Gift someone a classic such as “Little Women,” “The Great Gatsby,” “The Odyssey” or even a collection of classic short stories—all of which you can find online such as on Amazon.com.

History The perfect genre for the history buff in your life, historical books are a great way to get them reading while learning about what they love.

For many years, the Joy of my Life has been an insomniac. This has been coupled with having headaches almost every morning. We’ve tried every remedy from pills (either useless or too strong), listening to New Age music, listening to white noise machines, warm milk, wine, turkey meat, exercising to exhaustion, but nothing has worked. Finally, during a follow up to previous lab work, she mentioned it to our family doctor, who sent her to a local sleep clinic.

She was diagnosed as having sleep apnea, which is evidently a fairly common malady.

A week ago, we received a package, which we eagerly opened to find what initially appeared to be a highly sophisticated bong. It was her new CPAP unit.

I hate acronyms and in spite of my being the President and Chief Executive Officer of CAOOA (Citizens Against the Overuse of Acronyms), I had to find out what CPAP stood for. It means “Continuous Positive Airway Pressure”.

The unit came with instructions much easier to follow than those provided by the IKEA home furnishings store. In fact, the instruction book they included was roughly the size of a Ken Follett novel. Once we discarded the sections printed in Deutsch, Français, Italiano, Español, Portuguěs, Nederlands, Svenska, Felsőkning, Norsk, Dansk, Suomi, Eesti, Ĉesky, Chinese and Vulcan, it was reduced to the size of a John Steinbeck short story.

A side benefit of the device is that it seems to have eliminated her snoring, which is similar to that depicted in our grandson’s description of his sister – “She snores like a beast.” I am more inclined to compare it to the sound of sand cranes flying overhead.

The first night she used her gadget, I woke up at 3 am thinking I was lying next to a WWI soldier wearing a gas mask. The second night, I was transported to that chaotic scene in the movie “E.T.” where everyone is wearing white hazmat suits and scrambling through a maze of plastic tunnels in a totally sealed, sterile environment.

I don’t think she has come up with a name for her CPAP unit yet, but it has become a welcome addition to our family. Incidentally, it has bonded with my pacemaker, “Sparky”.

Recipe: Spaghetti Carbonara Dinners become a more intimate affair come winter, which is why comforting recipes are preferred by many users this time of the year. We have the perfect recipe if this is what you’re looking for too – a super creamy spaghetti carbonara.

A widely famous Italian dish, carbonara is made with guanciale, which is a special kind of bacon made with cured pork cheeks, but you can substitute this with pancetta or use every day bacon – just avoid using anything smoked.

The original carbonara recipe skips the cream, but we’ve still added it to make it more wholesome. You can always leave it out and stay true to the traditional recipe if you want.

Ingredients: • 4 egg yolks • 1/4 cup heavy cream • 3/4 cup pecorino Romano cheese or Parmesan cheese, freshly grated To Make:

• 1 oz spaghetti or penne • 2 tbsp Italian parsley, pasta/fettuccine chopped • 1/2 oz bacon, cut into half-inch dices

• Kosher salt, according to taste

• 1 tsp extra-virgin olive oil

• Freshly ground black pepper, according to taste

1. In a large pot, boil water for pasta. Salt heavily.

2. Take a sauté pan and add the diced bacon, cooking it slowly over low heat.

The idea here is to make the bacon crispy, which should take about 10 to 15 minutes. Remove the bacon bits from the pan and place it on paper towels to drain excess grease.

3. Add your spaghetti into the boiling water and cook according to instructions given on the back of the package. Usually, 6 to 9 minutes or until the spaghetti is al dente is good enough – it should still be firm to the bite.

4. In the meantime, while your spaghetti cooks, add the egg yolks, cheese, cream and olive oil in a bowl and whisk until the ingredients are properly combined.

5. Take out about a half cup of the pasta water and keep it aside.

6. Drain your pasta. Place the spaghetti back into the pot – along with the bacon this time.

7. Add the egg, cheese and cream mixture to the pot, stirring in briskly until the sauce thickens up. Remember, the pot should be off the heat. You can adjust the sauce consistency by using the reserved pasta water.

8. Plate your spaghetti carbonara and garnish with freshly ground black pepper and chopped parsley. You can also add grated cheese if need be.

Soul

The Disney organization is offering America a heartwarming and upbeat Christmas gift this year. It’s the latest release from Pixar Animation Studios, and it’s not—repeat, not—coming to a theater near you. (More on that later.)

Soul is an abstract, computeranimated narrative about a New York middle-school band teacher named Joe Gardner (voiced by Jamie Foxx). One night, Joe goes to the opening of a music venue called the Half Note Club. He impresses the other musicians gathered there and is given a chance to fulfill a long-standing dream: performing jazz music onstage.

Unfortunately, an accident—he steps into an open manhole—separates Joe’s soul from his body. Normally, he would be headed for the Great Beyond, but this time he’s actually traveling to the Great Before, where he finds himself in the “You Seminar,” a place where souls develop their own unique personalities before being sent to Earth. In order to return to Earth before his body dies, Joe is brought into contact with some “souls in training.” He becomes a mentor to a character named 22 (Tina Fey), whose outlook is tainted by a gloomy perception of the concept of life.

Director Pete Docter (Up, Monsters Inc.) says of his ambitious project, “The world can be an exhausting and frustrating place—but it’s also full of unexpected joys, even in seemingly mundane things. Soul investigates what’s really important in our lives, a question we’re all asking these days. I hope it will bring some humor and fun to people at a time when everyone can surely use that.”

The creative folks behind Soul decided to make the primary character AfricanAmerican, given how closely African-Americans have been connected to jazz history. Kemp Powers, one of three scriptwriters for Soul, is also Pixar’s first African-American co-director. (Powers based several elements of Joe on his personal life.)

To correctly portray the African-American culture, Pixar consulted with, among others, iconic musicians such as Herbie Hancock, Jon Batiste and Questlove. The film’s score was composed by Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross (both of Nine Inch Nails). Jon Batiste arranged a new version of the Impressions’ 1963 classic song “It’s All Right.”

Soul had originally been scheduled for a June 2020 release, but with the pandemic, the Disney organization decided to premier it exclusively on Disney + on Christmas Day 2020. Replete with colorful visuals and gentle wisdom, Soul will be offered free to all Disney + subscribers. It will play theatrically in countries where movie theaters have reopened and that don’t have Disney +.

Fried White Potatoes As much as I gripe about the holiday season, there’s one time-honored December tradition to which I happily succumb. As we near the eight days of Hanukkah, I’m overtaken by an urge to cook a traditional dish, potato pancakes, affectionately known as latkes.

But first, one must consult the calendar to verify its precise arrival. Unlike Christmas, Hanukkah has no consistent date. Not being a student of the Hebrew calendar, its landing always seems to me as being completely arbitrary, though I’m sure that’s not the case. But, like most Jewish holidays, it’s never on time. It’s either early or late. In fact, I can recall one year when Hanukkah was so eager to arrive, it actually collided with Thanksgiving.

Back to latkes. For the uninitiated, a latke (pronounced lat kuh, with emphasis on the lat) may appear to be nothing more than a fried potato pancake. But the little latke is so much more. It’s a potato pancake with a soul. The making and eating is a treat for all the senses. Therefore, once a year, I throw food caution to the wind, swallow an extra statin and prepare to enjoy starch cooked in oil.

Like all things Jewish, the proper preparation is not without controversy.

Traditionalists claim the only authentic way to make them is grating the potatoes by hand. Since I don’t believe a preferred methodology is discussed in any holy text, I stand with those who grate by food processor.

The outcome is just as good, and one’s knuckles remain intact.

What can compare with the aroma of frying the latke? Nothing, except for eating the latke. Garnish as you like – apple sauce, sour cream, even caviar.

And voila! The dull potato has been elevated to a luxurious treat.

But not even the splotches of potato starch that have landed on counters and floor, and the splattered oil on my stove, can detract from my satisfaction. The secondary benefit? Pet Insurance – Is it worth it?

By: Dr. Matt Encinosa Owning pets and providing proper care for them is becoming increasingly more expensive. In fact, pet spending has more than doubled over the last 10 years. For this reason, clients often ask me about pet insurance. There are quite a few pet insurance companies out there and they all have different benefits and policies. This is why it is important to do some research before you hop on a plan.

You should first consider your reason for getting pet insurance. Are you trying to decrease the amount you have to pay for routine vet visits and vaccines at one time, or are you getting it specifically for emergency situations? Or both? Most insurance companies offer a variety of plans that could work well with your specific needs, but it is up to you to look through the fine print and catch the phrases that will keep your pet from being covered.

Here are some main points to consider.

1. Pet insurance companies only reimburse you after they receive the bill from your veterinarian. If you don’t have the money on hand, you will have to find another way to pay the bill that day to be reimbursed later.

2. The majority of companies will not pay for anything that could be considered a preexisting condition. For instance, if your dog has had an ear infection before, they will not be paying for future ear infections.

MEGYERI Not since I saw former Secretary of State Madeleine Albright’s exhibit at the Smithsonian and read her book “Read My Pins,” where she wore her serpent pin on more than one diplomatic mission, have I been so enthralled by animal jewelry. Now, “Beautiful Creatures: Jewlery Inspired by the Animal Kingdom” by Marion Fasel has just been published.

Author and jewelry historian, Fasel relays the stories behind the selected pieces and shares colorful anecdotes, informative histories and facts about the symbolism of such species from land, air and water. The book showcases jewelry inspired by animals ranging from fish, birds, butterflies, panthers, lizards, spiders and jelly fish, all fashioned by jewelers from around the world into 120 dazzling pieces featuring precious gems. They were selected from the special exhibition in New York’s American Museum of Natural History’s Hall of Gems and Minerals that presents more than 5,000 minerals from its total collection of more than 100,000 minerals and gem specimens.

Giving Yourself the Holiday Gift of Brain Health

Our brains are our most complex organ. The brain is meant to thrive, restore and create! We can make proven lifestyle and food choices to boost our brain power right now when we need it most. Genetics are not the last word on our brain health. So let’s get moving toward our purpose by establishing some brain enhancing lifelong habits.

First of all, the GBOMBS (greens, beans, onion, mushrooms, berries & seeds) are a benchmark to always continue. Greens can add 11 years to a life and blueberries 2.5 years, research shows. Also, coffee in the morning, followed by decaf and/or tea is excellent for brain protection, as well as getting some early morning sunshine.

Eat plenty of foods rich in antioxidants like fruit, vegetables, green tea and those rich in omega-3 fatty acids such as salmon, walnuts and flaxseeds.

Aerobic walking is an excellent way to diminish damaging cortisol and increase serotonin and endorphins which are mood lifting chemicals.

Walking around your street or park is multidomain moderate exercise and thus far superior for your brain health than the single modality exercise of repetitive motion at the gym treadmill, bicycle or other equipment.

Vestibular brain training occurs during dual tasking, which increases memory, balance and fall risk protection. Thirty to sixty minutes of aerobic walking per day is highly recommended by therapists for brain and overall health. Many choose to meet a friend for a walk, which requires thought and some conversation, reaping multi-domain rewards as you make decisions on where to turn and which wildlife to notice.

While you utilize more parts of your brain, you not only boost strength, but also reverse damage and build new blood vessels. You also work against any chronic “fight or flight” syndrome. Sleep deprivation on the other hand reduces growth of new brain cells in the hippocampus, causing problems with memory, concentration and decision making.

And definitely stay away from smoking and smokers, which constricts arteries that deliver oxygen to your brain.

When it comes to brain power, remember: use it or Lose it! Play games with strategy involved like Scrabble, chess and bridge. Read books and magazines that challenge you. Take on a project that involves design and planning: quilting, woodworking, redecorating a room. Learn new things through music, foreign language, a new sport, alternate driving routes and recipe sharing.

“My Sweet Lord” BY: RANDAL C. HILL The Beatles ruled the music world from 1963 until 1970, when they released their Let It Be album. With the arrival of that LP, they collectively threw in the towel as the world’s top recording act, and each ex-member then went to work carving out his own solo career path.

Leading the way was George Harrison, who had spent most of his Beatle years in the long shadow cast by bandmates John Lennon and Paul McCartney. When Harrison’s first single of “My Sweet Lord” (released from his All Things Must Pass album) streaked to Number One right out of the gate, George managed to stand alone in the spotlight for once and bask in the warm glow of worldwide adulation.

“My Sweet Lord” became the best-known expression of George’s spirituality, his lengthy single detailing Harrison’s desire to become close to God. This is evident in the refrains of “Hallelujah” (a Jewish/Christian term meaning “Praise God”) and the Hindu term “Hare Krishna,” which offers devotion to Lord Krishna. Drawing from different religions for his song might have struck some folks as strange, but George apparently wrote his lyrics as a call to spirituality minus the taint of sectarianism.

But then the issue of money—lots of it—suddenly raised its head. Some

listeners noticed that the musical pattern of “My Sweet Lord” was identical to that of the Number One 1963 Chiffons hit “He’s So Fine.” In 1971, the power people behind Bright Tunes—the company that held the publishing rights to the Chiffons’ million-seller—sued George for copyright infringement.

Harrison tried over and over to settle the issue out of court, but Bright Tunes wasn’t interested in what he had to offer. Finally, in 1976 a judge ruled that George had indeed plagiarized “He’s So Fine,” but that he had probably done so unintentionally. Still, the ex-Beatle was ordered to fork over some of the proceeds from All Things Must Pass, plus 75% of the income generated by the tune in question. The total came to $1.6 million—quite a punch-in-the-gut even for a wealthy musician.

For the next three years, Harrison, bitter and discouraged, released no new music to his loyal fans. As he told a Rolling Stone writer, “It’s difficult to just start writing again after you’ve been through that. Even now when I put the radio on, every tune I hear sounds like something else.”

“It Wasn’t Fun Anymore”

On the night of December 27, 1960—a chilly Tuesday evening—1,500 music fans jammed into the spacious Litherland Town Hall in Liverpool, England. Promotional posters promised fans a grand night of dancing and rock ‘n’ roll, thanks to the debut of “the Sensational Beatles (Direct from Hamburg).” Attendees that night, who logically assumed that the band came from Germany, would remark later how good the quartet’s English skills were whenever the group members chatted with the audience.

Actually, all four Beatles had grown up in Liverpool. For the previous five months, though, they had been playing long sets of American Top 40 hits in bars and dance clubs in the gritty Reeperbahn district of Hamburg. In doing so, they had morphed from a ragtag bunch of minimally talented musicians into a respectable “cover” band that had become popular as headliners.

Who could blame the band for their decision? Worldwide fame, it seemed, had robbed the musicians of everything enjoyable about performing before an audience. The group’s powerful Vox amps had become all but useless against the nightly scream-fest that rolled over the band like an oceanic tide. So pronounced was John Lennon’s malaise that he had begun calling the Beatles’ live act a “freak show.”

Ringo Starr offered no argument. (“Nobody was listening at the shows.”) Even normally positive Paul McCartney confessed, “It wasn’t fun anymore.”

According to numerous rock historians, “Beatlemania” was ushered in that night. Within two years, the Fab Four became UK stars, and by 1964 they ruled the international pop-music world.

Flash forward to August 29, 1966. The Beatles are scheduled to play a concert at San Francisco’s Candlestick Park. Fans headed to that performance don’t realize that this will be the final live show of

Ocala Christmas Parade

Break out your winter jackets and warm hats, because on December 12 at 5:30 pm, the city of Ocala will be hosting their annual Christmas Parade.

Hosted by Friends of the Christmas Parade, Inc., this event has been a part of the local community for a running 65 years. Although the Grand Marshal has yet to be announced, the parade theme for 2020 is “A Heroes’ Christmas,” to pay tribute to the frontline workers who have sacrificed so much during this year.

The mission of this annual parade is, “To turn Christmas spirit into Community spirit,” according to the event’s Facebook page. And the Ocala Christmas Parade has done just that. With gathering families, costumed parade participants, local marching bands and even a featured float with Mr. and Mrs. Claus, this parade is just what Florida folks of all ages need to get in the festive mood for the holidays.

The parade tends to see the same faces year after year as the local community counts down the days to this favorite event. Complete with entertainment, twinkling lights and deliciously local food, this Christmas Parade is the perfect way to spend your Saturday evening.

The parade will span the distance of SE 25th Avenue to SS Blvd ending on NE 8th Ave.

According to their website, the city is still working with health officials to ensure the safest experience for guests of the event. A complete detail of festival protocols was handed out during the mandatory packet pickup sessions for any attending vendors or organizations in late November.
