More Than Just an Autumn Month With autumn well under way, October promises cooler temperatures for Floridians and the hope for less rain than September gave us. Not only does the weather begin to make its seasonal pivot, but this month means the start of the rich, cozy holiday season—starting with Halloween, or Día de Muertos for those practicing Mexican culture, moving to Thanksgiving and finally December’s family-oriented holiday celebrations.

However, October also means Breast Cancer Awareness Month, as many of us know. With the surge in popularity and media coverage, the backing behind breast cancer awareness has skyrocketed since its officially designated month in 1985. From survivors speaking out about their experience, to charities and foundations forming in the name of those who have passed from breast cancer, October is pretty in pink thanks to the support from activists and the general public.

This month doesn’t just call for the experience of outspoken survivors, but it also pushes us to keep our own health in mind, men and women alike, especially as we age. According to BreastCancer. org, the largest risk factor in contracting any cancer is aging. This is due to the fact that aging both produces a larger amount of genetic mutations within the body, and an aging body is less capable of repairing any genetic damage. Read Leslie Megyeri’s article in print or online about breast cancer risk in men to learn more about the different factors that leave you at risk for cancer.

Because of this fact, it’s crucial that you take care

of your body in order to best protect yourself from disease later in life. You can do so by maintaining a healthy body weight through a healthy, balanced diet and light daily exercise. Even going on a short walk in the morning or night can help keep you in shape! To lessen your chances of cancer even more, try cutting down on smoking and alcoholic beverages. These toxins can weaken your body’s immune system, which helps kill cancerous cells in the early stages.

October is also the start of Medicare open enrollment.

This is your yearly opportunity to re-evaluate your healthcare needs, including co-pays for doctor visits and prescriptions.

Now that we’ve stressed the importance of getting checked for breast cancer, be sure that your current or new Medicare plan covers this annual check-up. Read inside this magazine or on our website to learn more about what you need to know about Medicare open enrollment and different resources to help you find what’s best for you.

So, as you prepare for the holiday season and break out those plush throw blankets, keep in mind the importance of your health as you take the necessary steps in breast cancer awareness and evaluating your Medicare plan needs. Movie Preview – The War with Grandpa

In 1978, Robert De Niro and Christopher Walken starred in “The Deer Hunter”, one of moviedom’s most depressing war stories ever.

Now, fast-forward to 2020, and the De Niro/Walken team has returned to the silver screen, not to bring gloom and death this time, but chuckles and lightheartedness instead.

“The War with Grandpa” tale comes from Robert Kimmel Smith’s endearing 1984 book of the same name. In the movie, Grandpa Ed (De Niro) is recently widowed and at loose ends.

He is invited by his sympathetic daughter to move in with her family, in hopes that Ed won’t feel so lonely. Grandpa accepts, and in doing so sets the stage for a major conflict with his grandson, sixth-grader Peter (Oakes Fegley of Pete’s Dragon fame). The problem? Ed has been assigned Peter’s bedroom, the only room Peter has ever known and the space where he and his friends can hang out and play their beloved video games in peace. Now, Peter has been given the worst possible place in the house that he can imagine—the drab and lonely attic.

To the boy, this means war on the interloper. Encouraged by his two best buddies, Peter becomes determined to drive Ed away and begins a series of elaborate

pranks in an attempt to retrieve his room. At first the “attacks” are lightweight—a threatening note, a switched-off alarm clock. But, as the pranks increase in intensity and level of hurtfulness, the situation escalates to seriousness with a capital S.

Ed isn’t going to give up without a fight, however, and he recruits a disparate group of friends—Jerry (Walken), Sally (Uma Thurman), Diane (Jane Seymour) and Danny (Cheech Marin)—to combat Peter’s increasingly hostile attempts to oust his grandfather and get back his sacred space in the family home.

While it’s obvious that there’s no call for any “Deer Hunter” symbolism here, the scriptwriters apparently couldn’t resist at least one “Godfather” reference when we see Ed waking up to a snake being left in his bed.

As with Kimmel’s award-winning book, along the way we are shown the oftenunintended consequences of our actions when we are propelled by a relentless, “all-or-nothing” fuel of high-octane determination.

“The War with Grandpa” is both thoughtful and compelling, yet remains a lighthearted, even slapstickish family romp. Imagine a blend of “Home Alone” and “Dennis the Menace”, if you will. Directed by Tim Hill (“Alvin and the Chipmunks”) and written by Tom J. Astle and Matt Ember (“Home”), “The War with Grandpa” comedy is scheduled for an October release.

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month—Even for Men BY: LES MEGYERI My wife recently lost the first boss she ever worked for to breast cancer. He was a kind, well-liked, gentle man, but when first diagnosed, he only told his male friends in a confidential manner because he was embarrassed to talk of it and did not want to make it public. Men must remember that since they do have breast tissue, they can contract breast cancer.

Granted, it is not widespread, but over the past couple of years, it has been found in 1 percent of all men, which amounts to 2,000 cases each year and 440 deaths. It does boast a 5-year survival rate for 84 percent of the men in which it is found, but that depends on the stage of the disease when detected. If it is confined only to the breast, the 5-year survival rate is 96 percent. Breast cancer cells must divide 30 times before a lump can be felt. With most breast cancers, each division takes one to two months, so by the time you feel a cancerous lump, it has most likely been in your body for two to five years.

Due to the anatomy of the male breast, the cancer can spread to surrounding tissue faster than it can in women. Men are also less aware of the signs of breast cancer and are less likely to check their breasts, which can contribute to spreading. Thus, after age 35, men should make breast exams part of their annual physicals. The most common symptoms men should be aware of are a new lump in the breast or armpit, a thickening or swelling or increase in size and shape of the lump, an irritation or dimpling Lifestyles After 50 • October 2020 • page 6

in the skin, a pulling or pain in the nipple area or discharge from the nipple, including blood.

Aging is an important risk factor for the development of breast cancer in men, but family history, inherited gene mutations, exposure to radiation, overuse of alcohol, liver disease and estrogen treatment are other risk factors. Doctors also cite obesity, testicular problems, gynecomastia which is a condition that causes the growth of abnormally large breasts in males and Klinefelter’s Syndrome as other risk factors.

Thanks to a few well-known celebrities, the awareness of male breast cancer has been heightened and the stigma is lessening. For example, Rod Roddy, a 17-year game show announcer on the Price is Right, had a mastectomy but died in 2003. Senator Edward Brooke, the first African American U.S. Senator to serve in Congress, thought he had pulled a muscle gardening, but he had a double mastectomy, recovered and died at age 95. Peter Criss of KISS, who was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2014, found a lump in his left breast after working out. He underwent successful surgery and has become an outspoken advocate for male breast cancer awareness.

So, men, join women this October and become aware of your breasts as well. As Criss warns, “You don’t need boobs to get breast cancer.”

She was my 2nd grade teacher at Fillmore Elementary. And I was in love with her. I knew that she would wait for me to grow up, and would be my wife someday.

The entrance to the subdivision where I lived in Hamilton, Ohio, was a U-shaped drive bordered by brick apartments, and I knew which one was hers. Some evenings I would circle her building on my bicycle, allthe-while ringing the bell attached to the handlebar, hoping to catch her attention. The next day I would ask if she’d heard me. “No,” she smiled and my little stalker’s heart sank.

Then one day, she brought her fiancé to school to meet the class, poor guy. Never was a man so quickly disliked, so strongly, and by so many.

We knew he was going to take her away from us.

It was exactly like Spanky, Alfalfa and The Little Rascals, when Miss Crabtree brought her fiancé to school, only we didn’t take similar measures to “get rid of him”.

Roughly 16 years later, I had another crush (as did many), triggered by the movie “Breakfast at Tiffany’s”, based upon Truman Capote’s short story (yes, he wrote more than ‘In Cold Blood’). Years after that, on reflection, I questioned myself as to whether my crush was actually on Audrey Hepburn or was it on Holly Golightly.

More recently I and myself had other conversations over similar crush dilemmas. Was my crush on Jenna Copeland or was it on Clara Oswald (Dr. Who)? And then soon afterwards we discussed, was it on Aubrey Plaza or was it on April Ludgate (Parks and Recreation)?

My Sweetheart patiently tolerates my crushes (she has hers, too).

Of course, when she expresses adoration for a George Clooney or a Neil Diamond, I’m quick to respond, “Yes, but you know he was once married to Rock Hudson don’t you?” She then fires back, “And I suppose you think your Catherine Zeta-Jones is really straight?” Another goodnatured game of verbal ping-pong ensues until one of us concedes.

Frankly, in my eyes The Joy of My Life is STILL young and beautiful. AND wears glasses.

Duncan and the Donut Ah, October: Columbus Day, Halloween, the World Series and for those of us who are late-middle-aged, the start of Medicare open enrollment season.

If your age is at, or exceeds, the speed limit, you have approximately two months to reassess your prescription plan. This season I resolve to finally become a more informed consumer, and seek a comprehensible explanation of the arithmetically baffling "donut hole."

I breathe deeply as I dial the 800 number that will hopefully provide answers before dinnertime beckons. After I assure the disembodied voice that I'm OK with English, she inquires about the purpose of my call. "Explain the donut hole," I reply. "OK," says she, "I'll connect you to a representative."

The music swells, occasionally interrupted by a reassuring message regarding the importance of my call. And the longer I'm forced to listen, the more I remember why I chose to live in ignorance. Finally, the welcome click, signaling the end of the sound track, and connection to a human.

"Hello, welcome to the ‘Donut Hole Customer Care Line’. My name is Duncan.

How can I help you today?"

"Surely, that can't really be your name," I gulp, trying not to giggle.

What You Need to Know About Medicare Open Enrollment

It’s that time of year again: Medicare Open Enrollment period. Each year from October 15 to December 7, current Medicare users are able to compare and switch their Medicare plans, if wanted. New users are able to enroll during this period, so long as it is not their first time enrolling in Parts A or B. According to MyMedicareMatters.org, here are the various changes you can make during this open enrollment time: Anyone with Medicare Parts A & B can switch to a Part C plan.

Anyone with Medicare Part C can switch back to Parts A & B.

Anyone who has or is signing up for Medicare Parts A or B can join, drop or switch a Part D prescription drug plan.

"Yes, ma'am, sadly it's true. I'm Duncan, the donut hole specialist, and I would appreciate if you could please refrain from making jokes and cheap puns, or referring to me as a Munchkin."

Anyone with Medicare Part C can switch to a new Part C plan.

"Never entered my mind," I assured him, crossing my fingers. "I simply want to know how to avoid falling into the donut hole."

Given the fact that insurance companies are able to make various changes to their Medicare plans that impact the specifics of different out-of-pocket costs for consumers, it’s recommended that you use this time to re-evaluate your own plan and make changes that can save you money while keeping you covered. The benefits of annually evaluating your Medicare coverage plan, according to MyMedicareMatters.org, are these:

"You can't avoid it," Duncan said. "Once you reach your coverage limit, down you go. You're on your own until you've hit your TrOOP." My troop? It's been years since I've been a scout leader. And I can't afford to be on my own.

After Duncan explains that TrOOP is an acronym for True Out-of-Pocket expense, I whine into the phone, "Isn't there something I can do?"

Duncan pauses. "Well, you can remain healthy, or take a second mortgage on your house. If you would like, I can transfer you to the Second-Mortgage Donut Hole Help Line."

Duncan must have sensed my despair because he lowered his voice and, in a confidential tone, asked me if I'd considered moving to Canada.

I hung up, more confused than ever. But not before I told Duncan that I "donut" know how to thank him.

Any changes you make to your Medicare coverage plan during the 2020 open enrollment period will be effective as of January 1, 2021.

Be aware that isolation activates pain centers in your brain, with the equivalence of smoking 15 cigarettes a day, so find ways to connect with others even while sheltering.

Psychologist Dr. Martin Seligman suggests calling someone who provided a turning point for your life and let them know exactly what they did and what it meant to you. Usually this would be done in person but in our current situation, a phone call and follow up letter that spells out what they meant would still be effective.

Living in the moment often occurs when we are engaged in fulfilling work and interesting hobbies. We lose track of time and go with the flow. Ask yourself now, what are you talented at doing? If you concentrate on writing or playing your music, for example, or learning a new language during sheltering, this can be the first step toward becoming fully engaged.

In your social connections, which individual would you like to feel more connected with? What action can you take to achieve this connection? Who do you know who truly cares about you with whom you can connect by email, Facetime or an old-fashioned phone call? They are probably craving more meaningful connections now, too.

A key concept in Okinawa is ikigai which means, “why I wake up in the morning”. It’s a sense of direction. With a sense of purpose, a sense of direction what did I do today that is valuable and worthwhile? In this way, we are turning a crisis into an opportunity.

All these steps can lead to achievements and accomplishments which provide a sense of pride in oneself.

Let us each say, “One of my character strengths is manifested when I...” or, “What important goal did I accomplish this year even in the midst of the pandemic; what are the steps I took to achieve it?”

REVOLVER, Sam Colt and the Six-Shooter that Changed America by Jim Rasenberger

How could I have ever been educated in an American high school and not studied the profound effects of this amazing American who so impacted this nation’s history? This phenomenally well-researched biography was written

by Jim Rasenberger, who also wrote “Brilliant Disaster”, one of the best nonfiction books of 2011 about America’s doomed invasion of the Bay of Pigs.

In “Revolver”, Rasenberger examines the life and times of Samuel Colt who packed many lifetimes into his short 47 years.

Even in his youth, Samuel Colt was inventive. He focused on batteries, underwater mines and waterproof cables.

Prior to Colt, guns fired one bullet at a time and then had to be reloaded. After hearing soldiers talk of the possible success of a double-barreled rifle and gun that could shoot without reloading, Colt wanted to create such a weapon by designing a single fixed barrel with a rotating cylinder. He finally made the mass production of revolvers economically viable in 1835. His weapon was first used in the War against the Seminoles, but when the Texas Rangers ordered 1,000 revolvers during America’s War with Mexico, Colt’s Patent Fire-Arms Manufacturing Company made him the most famous and wealthiest man in the U.S., worth $15 million at the time of his death in 1862.

But it was his sophisticated manufacturing with the use of interchangeable parts that helped him to become one of the first industrialists to use assembly line production. He had custom made revolvers engraved and assembled with pearl grips to present to world leaders as he traveled abroad. These gifts would help secure foreign patents as well. Thus, he was a pioneer in advertising, product placement and mass marketing, and was so successful that his name became a household word.

He advertised in newspapers, hired authors to write stories in magazines and travel guides and paid one magazine to fill 29 pages with illustrations and stories of his factory in Hartford, Connecticut. He introduced the phrase “new and improved” to the advertising world, trademarked his signature and sold to both the North and the South during the Civil War. But Colt also at times faced bankruptcy, drank, womanized, smuggled guns to Russia, bribed politicians, emasculated his competitors and committed fraud. He even sold hits of laughing gas to the public in order to finance his gun factory. Still, he embodied America’s ambition, ingenuity, entrepreneurship and wealth at the same time. He personifies America’s gun culture and even to this day he’s known as the “Revolver Man.”

Recipe: Pumpkin Dessert Dip BY: REBECCA FENDING

When we think of October, it tends to conjure images of fluttering leaves in an array of different burning colors, warmly spiced drinks, throw blankets and bright orange pumpkins. However, Floridians know that October doesn’t always mean that the weather will feel like autumn. With a state average of about 84 degrees throughout the month, most of us don’t feel like turning on the oven and baking a pumpkin pie for a full hour. So, what are we to do when we’re craving that classic pumpkin flavor but refuse to bake along with the pie?

This is where a pumpkin dessert dip comes in—full of the beloved spices that accompany pumpkin (cloves, allspice, cinnamon...), this dip is the perfect no-bake recipe for the season. Fluffy, creamy and indulgent, pumpkin dip may convert you to the no-heat side of seasonal desserts.

Drawing inspiration from various sources that have created something similar, here is the perfected recipe for a simple and sweet dessert to add to spread for company or keep just for yourself: Ingredients: • -2 cups heavy cream • -1 box (3.4 oz.) instant French vanilla pudding mix (MUST be French vanilla)

• -½ cup powdered sugar

• -1 teaspoon cinnamon • -Graham crackers, gingersnaps or vanilla wafers for dipping

• -½ cup plain, canned pumpkin • -3 teaspoons pumpkin spice

To Make: With a standing or hand mixer, mix together the heavy cream and instant pudding until peaks form.

Typically, 2-3 minutes.

Mix in powdered sugar until combined. Then, fold in canned pumpkin and spices until uniform.

Chill for at least 3 hours (preferably overnight) in a sealed container.

Serve with a light dusting of cinnamon as garnish, your choice of crunchy cookie or sweet cracker and enjoy!

Note: If you’re not a fan of dip, you can make or buy graham cracker crust in a pie plate and fill it with the dip recipe! Refrigerate for the same amount of time and slice it up when you’re ready.

Fur shedding is a common complaint of dog and cat owners.

Certain dog breeds like Poodles shed very little, while other breeds like Huskies and Golden Retrievers shed a lot. The same variation exists between breeds of cats.

In most cases, the shedding is a completely normal occurrence and is part of a natural evolutionary cycle designed to help dogs and cats cope with drastic environmental changes. In cold weather, fur grows thick and traps body heat, keeping animals warm. As the weather warms, fur is shed, allowing the body to cool, while at the same time protecting the body from sunburn, cuts and abrasions.

so shedding can happen at the wrong time of year or in some cases, all year.

But, contrary to popular belief, temperature change is not what guides the shedding cycle. It is actually the change in the length of day or the number of daylight hours. Fur growth is triggered by hormones released from the pituitary gland as the days grow shorter.

Similarly, shedding is triggered by opposing pituitary hormones as the days lengthen.

Shedding also has another very important function. Prior to giving birth, mothers can shed enormous quantities of fur to create warm nesting material for newborn litters of puppies or kittens. A thinner coat of fur on mom can also make nursing easier for the puppies. Of course there are also many causes of shedding that are not normal.

Parasites, skin infections, allergies and hormonal diseases can all cause an abnormal amount of fur loss and could signal deeper internal disease. In general, abnormal shedding is associated with bald patches, foul smells, itching or sores on the skin. These, of course, should be investigated by a veterinarian to find the cause and proper treatment.

This results in an interesting phenomenon in dogs and cats that live indoors. Because of artificial lighting, there is very little seasonal difference in the number of “daylight” hours that those dogs and cats can perceive. Their bodies and brains, in a sense, become confused,

WHO TO TRUST WHEN IT COMES TO TRUSTS

by WILLIAM R. MUMBAUER, Attorney www.flwillstrustsprobate.com A reader asks: I recently received an advertisement in the mail suggesting that all seniors would greatly benefit from a “Living” Trust. The company that sent the advertisement wants to send a representative to my home to discuss the benefits of a Trust. Should I respond to this advertisement?

My recommendation is to ignore the solicitation.

Misinformation and misunderstanding about estate taxes and the length or complexity of probate provide the perfect cover for scam artists who have created an industry out of older people’s fears that their estates could be eaten up by costs or that the distribution of their assets could be delayed for years. Some unscrupulous businesses are advertising seminars on “Living” Trusts or sending postcards inviting consumers to call for in-home appointments to learn more about “Living” Trusts. In these cases, it’s not uncommon for the salesperson to use high pressure sales techniques and to exaggerate the benefits or the appropriateness of the “Living” Trust and claim -- falsely -- that locally-licensed attorneys will prepare the documents. And often the prices quoted are three to four times higher than what your neighborhood attorney would charge.

Still other businesses are using estate planning services to gain access to consumers’ financial information in hopes of selling them other financial products, such as insurance annuities.

What’s a consumer to do? It’s true that for some people, a “Living” Trust can be a useful and practical tool. But for others, it can be a great

waste of money and time. But how can you tell which tools and strategies will work best for your particular circumstances?

It’s always best to seek the advice of an experienced estate planning attorney. Most attorneys do not charge for the initial conference and at this meeting all of your questions regarding whether or not a “Living” Trust is right for you or if other estate planning methods are more appropriate can be fully answered.

“Fire and Rain” - James Taylor BY: RANDAL C. HILL Born in Boston in 1948, James Taylor was the second of five children, and the son of a prominent doctor father and an aspiring opera-singer mother. After the Taylors moved to North Carolina, James studied the cello before switching to the guitar.

At a private boarding school as a teenager, he proved to be bright but uncomfortable in the high-pressure, college-prep setting. He enrolled at the public Chapel Hill High School but, depressed and insecure, dropped out during his junior year. In time, though, Taylor earned his diploma at a psychiatric hospital in Belmont, Massachusetts.

He and a musician friend moved to New York, formed the Flying Machine band, and gigged around Greenwich Village, where James began shooting heroin.

The group released one single, which went unnoticed, and the discouraged musicians disbanded. Eventually Taylor decided to move to London alone, where he auditioned for Beatles-owned Apple Records and became the first non-British act signed to the prestigious label. While his debut album contained such now-classic tracks as “Carolina in My Mind,” his Apple disc tanked, due primarily to Taylor’s drug issues and the Beatles’ label falling apart.

Back in the States, James signed with Warner Records and cut the album Sweet Baby James, which featured “Fire and Rain.” Listeners often dug deeply in trying to analyze Taylor’s poignant lyric lines; a 1972 Rolling Stone magazine interview

managed to shed a bit of light on the song’s three seemingly disparate verses.

“The first verse is about my reactions to the death of a friend,” James explained. Suzanne Schnerr was a young woman who had befriended Taylor during his Flying Machine days. Later, at a mental-health facility, she committed suicide after being assigned an isolation cell.

Suzanne, the plans they made put an end to you He continues, “The second verse is about my arrival [back] in this country with a monkey on my back.” Here he implores Jesus to give him the strength he needs to survive his heroin addiction.

My body’s aching and my time is at hand In conclusion, Taylor candidly offers, “The third verse of that song refers to my recuperation in Austin Riggs [a psychiatric hospital in Stockbridge, Massachusetts], which lasted about five months.”

What? Paul McCartney is DEAD?

In October 1969, shortly after the release of “Abbey Road”, Beatle fans everywhere were suddenly digging up “evidence” of a music-world tragedy—the death of Paul McCartney.

According to the rumor, he had argued with the other Beatles during a 1966 recording session. Supposedly, early in the morning of Wednesday, November 9, he stormed out of the studio and roared off in his Aston-Martin roadster, only to crash and die in a small, unidentified English town. To spare the world of the agony of a McCartney-less Beatles, a look-alike named William Campbell was said to have been brought in for photo shoots from then on.

Album-cover “clues”—past and present—were soon cited in abundance.

On the front of the “Sergeant Pepper” album, we see the “funeral” of the old Beatles, in which a hand is raised above

Clue-hunters really hit the jackpot with “Abbey Road”. On the front cover, the Fab Four traverse Abbey Road (also the name of the band’s recording studio) in a line. John wears long reddish hair and is dressed in white—an obvious Jesus symbol.

Ringo looks like an undertaker. Paul, the third in line, is the only Beatle with his eyes closed, the only Beatle without shoes (in some countries people are buried shoeless), the only Beatle out of step with the others, the only Beatle shown smoking. (Left-hander Paul holds his cigarette in his right hand.) George, bringing up the rear, wears the outfit of a gravedigger. A VW Beetle (get it?) in the background bears the license plate 28IF. Paul was 27 in 1969, however, in some cultures a person is counted as one year old at birth. On the album’s back cover, a series of dots before the word BEATLES form the number three if connected. Angled slightly left and counterclockwise, shadows on the wall next to BEATLES form a human skull.
