‘The Way Back’ March Film By RANDAL C. HILL

B

lending a classic sports story with a tale of midlife crisis, Warner Brothers’, The Way Back, isn’t a predictable Disney-type sports drama or an updated Hoosiers, but an unflinching study of life’s pitfalls that can bring down the best and brightest of us. In high school, he had been a superstar. Handsome, whip-smart, popular. And on the basketball court, nobody could match the jaw-dropping skills of Jack Cunningham (Ben Affleck). By graduation, Jack had earned a full university scholarship and a potential ticket to a 24-karat dream life. Then, suddenly, he walked away from

his beloved sport and forfeited his future. From an early age, Jack liked to drink. A lot. His imbibing morphed from adolescent Animal House-type partying to quiet, full-blown alcoholism. As a result, he experienced a fall from grace that would devastate his marriage (which included a life-altering tragedy) and any hopes for a successful, or even satisfactory, life. Since Jack’s glory days more than 20 years previously, the basketball team at his alma mater has fallen with a thud. Then a possible break materializes: the current coach suffered a heart attack. Jack—now a middle-aged, chainsmoking construction worker who has never left town—is offered a shot at redemption: coaching a motley team of troubled, undisciplined losers. Jack reluctantly accepts the task, surprising everyone, including himself. As it turns out, he has as much to learn as his players do. Over time, the boys start to come together as a team and even begin to win some games.

Festival Season Has Sprung S

pring is coming, whether it feels like it or not. While the official start of the season is March 19, spring abides by no mere mortal’s rules. It comes and goes at a pace that surprises even the most prepared of us every month. For many Floridians, spring begins with the start of the numerous festivals that the months of March and April house. Too many to count, these festivals act as an invitation for Florida natives to welcome spring with open arms as they begin to shed their winter woes and clothes. From the Gulf to the Atlantic, festival season is just beginning. BIKE WEEK One of these festivals is one simply called “Bike Week”. Centered around Daytona Beach, this weeklong festival begins March 6 and ends March 15 and presents the opportunity to get out into the fresh air. This year will be Bike Week’s 79th year running, and they’re not holding back with the number of festivities. This huge event attracts fellow riders on an international scale, creating a culturally rich atmosphere of different languages and stories. Thousands of bikers are expected to be in attendance, making for a bustling and electrifying weeklong party. Featured events include the vintage and custom bikes show, concerts and several barbecues. From swapmeets to bike shows to bar and saloon meet ups, Bike Week 2020 holds the promise of excitement and making new friends. Visit their website, www.officialbikeweek.com/ , to learn more. SHARK TOOTH FESTIVAL If you’re looking for something to do with visiting family or even just something that differs from the mundane, Shark Tooth Festival in Venice is a great way to greet spring. Named “The Shark Tooth Capital of the World”, this festival allows you

to get up close with the classic oceanic predator’s chompers. Paired with great food, music and vendors, this festival ensures a great way to celebrate spring on the beach. Start planning now, because although this short three-day festival doesn’t start until April 3, they’re expecting a big turnout for the weekend. Learn more at their website: www.specialolympicsfloridasarasot.godaddysites.com/ . STRAWBERRY FESTIVAL I wouldn’t be able to talk about Florida springtime festivals unless the Florida Strawberry Festival was included, and rightfully so. This grand festival pulls an average of 500,000 folks annually from all over the state in a celebration of spring, strawberries, and community. The 11-day event has many events for its visitors to attend, ranging from entertainment such as Rascal Flatts or 98 Degrees, to carnival rides and food. But this famous festival doesn’t stop there—you can enter various contests such as the art show, livestock competitions, or even the Strawberry Shortcake Eating Contest. Learn more about the festival at www.flstrawberryfestival.com/ . Spring has sprung and so have our festivals. Whether you’re looking for something to do on the open road or with your family, Florida’s spring events never disappoint. There’s something for everyone no matter where you look. More details for all these festivals can be found at their respective websites, including tentative schedules, scheduled talent, and directions.

Largest juried flower show coming to Naples By J.C. AmodeA

N

aples Garden Club (NGC) and Naples Botanical Garden (NBG) are partnering in presenting the 2020 Naples Flower Show, the largest juried flower show in Southwest Florida. The two-day event will be held on March 20 and 21 from 9am to 5pm at the NBG. The annual flower show made its debut in 1953, and ever since, it has drawn the area’s vegetal aficionados to the event. In 2019, some 6,000 attendees enjoyed the wide variety of all things botanical. The 2020 theme is “Vision 2020: Past, Present, Future,” where inspiration will be drawn from what nature has provided, what innovation does today and what imagination can do with its organic materials mixed with creativity. Guests will view spectacular floral designs, exotic plants, educational exhibits, presentations and interactive demonstrations. A variety of vendors offering horticulture for sale as well as other related items will be on hand, along with the Naples Botanical Garden’s Gift Shop. According to Paulette Galliker, NGC communications chair, there are five divisions in the fun event. “The horticulture division, with over 350 entrants, show hundreds of specimens, cut or in pods. The design division, with 56 entrants in three classes includes paintings, as well as a myriad of design displays.

Division three, education, features four educational exhibits: Florida panthers, a living legacy, succulents and their divine design diversity, growing careers in horticulture and Audubon’s Corkscrew Swamp sanctuary,” Galliker explained. “Division four, Youth Group, showcases work from Avalon School students, focusing on seeds to sprouts. Division five interprets the botanical arts with 28 exhibit entrants. Included are photography and arts and crafts, like wearable apparel and accessories, such as a Victorian broach made from pumpkin seeds, a pendant made from half of a macadamia nut, and a modern gardening hat.”

Nine panels of four out-of-state judges will oversee the different areas. Awards will be presented to the division winners in horticulture, design, educational and botanical arts. Local awards of appreciation will be presented to all participants in the youth division and to others. A special section of the Botanical Gardens includes the NGC’s Idea Garden, sponsored and cared for by NGC, where exhibits will be on display, and where you can pick up tips on how to fix orchids and do espalier (the horticultural and ancient agricultural practice of controlling woody plant growth). The Idea Garden is “a place for garden lovers to gather and share innovative planting ideas and be inspired to grow plants, flowers, and vegetables in imaginative ways.” According to NGC.org, their mission “to provide opportunities for sharing and learning about horticulture, floral design and the environment in a congenial, supportive atmosphere.” The club is proud to partner with Naples Botanical Garden to provide the local community “with opportunities for learning and sharing” through events like the prestigious Naples Flower Show. Tickets can be purchased at https:// tickets.naplesgarden.org. For more information, visit their website at www.naplesgardenclub.org. Visit, and be inspired.

Goldie Hawn, Arte Johnson and Lily Tomlin on set of Rowan & Martin’s Laugh-In Photo Credit: The Everett Collection “Sock it to me!” “Here come de judge!” “You bet your sweet bippy!” “Look that up in your Funk and Wagnalls!” At one time, it was virtually impossible to get through a day without hearing a few of these silly statements thanks to the astounding success and widespread influence of Rowan and Martin’s Laugh-In. Just called Laugh-In by most viewers, the show premiered as a groundbreaking NBC-TV special in September 1967. It proved to be such a surprise ratingshit that NBC added it to their regular weekly schedule beginning the following January. “At the time, nobody was doing pure comedy,” reflected creator George Schlatter. “All variety shows were the same. I wanted something that reflected my own minimal attention span and love of comedy.” Laugh-In was basically an hour of modern-age vaudeville. Viewers were witness to cockeyed sight gags, irreverent one-liners, off-color sketches, social issue playlets and absurdly satirical newscasts. Performers fell through trap doors, tipped over on tricycles, and endured buckets of water and cream pies in the face. Fleeting celebrity cameo appearances featured such disparate stars as ukulele maven Tiny Tim, movie icon John Wayne and straight-arrow politician Richard “Sock it to Me?” Nixon. Everything flashed by at a furious pace, with one clever critic declaring the Monday night bash “like an ‘Ed Sullivan Show’ on an LSD trip.” Laugh-In was hosted by urbane straight man Dan Rowan, with (supposedly) dim Dick Martin as his foil. The pair had knocked around for years in Las Vegas with limited success. Laugh-In portrayed them as hosts who often appeared to be befuddled by the wacky events swirling around them — high-octane go-go dancers, an ongoing cocktail party, an end-of-the-show joke wall. A vast repertoire of celebrities also emerged from the show, including Arte Johnson, Ruth Buzzi, Henry Gibson, Jo Anne Worley, Flip Wilson, Judy Carne, Alan Sues, and Gary Owens. Rising above all these temporary stars, though, were two women who would go on to entertainment renown. Perky Goldie Hawn found fame as a bumbling, giggling, bikini-clad blonde babe with silly sayings painted on her skin. Lily Tomlin’s star turn came as Ernestine, a sardonic telephone operator who immortalized such lines as “Is this the party to whom I am speaking?” Although Laugh-In loped along until 1973, the show had been on life support since the end of the 1960s. But NBC would soon return to the satire game, thanks to a former Laugh-In writer, Lorne Michaels, who created Saturday Night Live for a welcoming mid-1970s Laugh-In audience. When asked about his show’s legacy, Schlatter replied, “Break the rules. Once something becomes a rule, it’s made to be broken.”

Local Sea Captain Turned Author By Faye Roland

“Chronic sailor and adventurer...”

A book signing for Under a Cloud of Sails: Memoirs of a Free Spirit will take place at Barnes and Noble in the Waterside Shops on saturday, April 18 from 10am to 12pm. Captain Winston Williams awaits eager guests at Lowdermilk Park

O

n a bright, breezy afternoon in Naples—a perfect day for a sail—a nautically skilled and experienced gentleman sits quietly at a table in a shaded pavilion at Lowdermilk Park. As the sun glints on waves rolling onto the nearby beach, the pavilion becomes a beehive of activity around him. People tie Mylar balloons to posts; others carry in large pots of yellow flowers and packed coolers. A white captain’s hat with gold epaulets rests on the table before the man who, a closer look reveals, sits in a wheelchair, a small battery-powered oxygen pump at his side. The first guests arrive, and soon a line snakes out onto the sidewalk. The man’s name is Winston Williams, a former sea captain with a fascinat-

ing story to tell. Stacked neatly on one of the picnic tables in the pavilion are books containing the story. At 84, Williams is here for the first book signing of his autobiography, Under a Cloud of Sails: Memoirs of a Free Spirit, recently released by O’Leary Publishing of Bonita Springs. “I can’t believe this is happening to me at this point in my life,” the man said, a tear in his eye. At a friend’s urging, Williams began chronicling his seagoing adventures in 2010. He had previously published articles in National Geographic and Cruising World, so he contacted an agent to ask whether he might be interested in a more comprehensive narrative. Williams smiles as he recalls hearing him say, “Your story

Lifestyles After 50 • Naples • March 2020 • page 8

sounds interesting, but you’re not Brad Pitt.” The chapters sat on a bookshelf in Williams’ home for ten years until he met April O’Leary, founder of O’Leary Publishing, who published his story, Under a Cloud of Sails, complete with photos and a glossary of nautical terms. In the preface, the author describes himself as a “chronic sailor and adventurer” who circled the world on a tall ship, sailed a movie star’s schooner on the South Seas, and navigated his own schooner “on a 4,000 mile odyssey to Tahiti.” Throughout 30 chapters, he recounts these and other adventures, taking the reader along from his early life in a New England prep school to a lengthy struggle with alcoholism, as well as his more prudent years in Florida.

Williams marvels at the idea that the publication of his story has allowed him to leave a legacy, especially for his children and grandchildren. “I feel proud,” he says, “but in a quiet way, because it’s not a privilege I usually give myself.” At 84, the captain is clearly enjoying a new and different wind in his sails.

A longtime teacher, Faye Roland began her writing career as a Boston Globe contributor and editor of corporate newsletters. She now works at The Village School in Naples and tutors students in Language Arts.

The word origin is animal-related, and my unhappiness has everything to do with an animal: with an article I read concerning the emotional life of dogs. It’s no secret I’m a dog lover. When I started writing, we cohabitated with two beautiful Labrador Retrievers, Bette and Davis. They inspired my first book, How Old Am I in Dog Years? I believe they lived happily to the ripe old ages of 15 and 16, respectively. I also believed they loved us. Now there’s Sam, a 17-pound rough coat Russell Terrier, my first small dog. I’ve discovered a small dog is a different experience. First of all, I can lift him, which I do, frequently. And while he’s in my arms, I plant kisses on his head, and he, in turn, licks my face. Sam sleeps in our bed and cuddles. Sam follows me around the house. When he wants my attention he’s jealous if my focus is elsewhere. I’m his primary caregiver and he’s clearly attached to me. He forgives me for giving him sink baths. I adore Sam, and was convinced the feeling was reciprocal. Until now. I thought he loved me for me. Because he senses I’m a good person who occasionally feeds him table scraps, and takes him to the dog park. Because I rub his belly and tell him he’s a very good dog. I thought our bond was unique, and in his dog brain, I was special. Wrong! Said article revealed an inconvenient truth. Yes, my dog loves me, but not because I’m me. He can’t help it. It’s in his canine DNA! Apparently, dogs have an amazing ability to bond with other species. Raise a dog with humans, it’ll bond with humans. But raise a dog with sheep, it’ll bond with sheep. Or goats. Or penguins. You name it. To quote, “dogs have an abnormal willingness to form strong emotional bonds with anything that crosses their path.” I could be replaced by a robot had Sam been introduced to one when he was still in doggie diapers. This knowledge is most disappointing. I almost feel betrayed, although I realize it’s not Sam’s fault. But now I’m confused. When Sam stares up at me with those big, brown, soulful eyes, is he appreciating me, or might I just as readily be an elephant? But humans must be resilient. I wish I could unlearn this new discovery, but I can’t. I can only hope one day soon animal research will prove to be like health research. Last month eggs were banned, and caffeine put you 24 hours nearer death. But research this month says to eat eggs several times a week, and coffee gives you an edge when playing “Jeopardy.” So, I’ll diligently read the newspaper, searching for studies that negate the previous findings. Ideally, the next wave of animal scientists will uncover evidence that dogs are uniquely programmed to bond with humans. Particularly with women in their seventies. Recipe By LauRen ReeVeS

MaRCH 17TH

re you looking for an easy slow cooker recipe for St. Patrick’s Day? The typical recipes are easy to come by, but not always easy to execute (who wants to make a brine and soak their brisket for several hours to a day?). Nothing says “Irish it was spring” quite like the classic dish of corned beef and cabbage. Celebrate the start of warmer weather with this simple crockpot meal:

Classic St. Paddy’s Day Corned Beef Ingredients 1 onion, cut into wedges 4 potatoes (or cauliflower) of your choice, peeled and quartered 1 lb. baby carrots 3 cups water 3 cloves garlic, minced (or 3 TBSP minced garlic) 1 bay leaf 2 tablespoons sugar (or stevia) 2 tablespoons apple cider vinegar 1/2 teaspoon ground black pepper 1 (3 pound) corned beef brisket with spice packet, cut in half 1 small head cabbage, cut into wedges Preparation Place onion, potatoes, and carrots in a 5-quart slow cooker. Combine water, garlic, bay leaf, sugar, vinegar, and contents of spice packet in a small bowl; pour over vegetables. Top with brisket and cabbage. Cover and cook on Low until meat and vegetables are tender, 8 to 9 hours. Remove bay leaf before serving. Enjoy!
