he Florida RV Trade Association (FRVTA) will host the 33nd Annual 2018 Florida RV SuperShow, Wednesday, January 17 through Sunday, January 21 at the Florida State Fairgrounds in Tampa, Florida.

The 2018 SuperShow will have representation from every major RV manufacturer as well as hundreds of accessory booths exhibitors. “We will have more Suppliers’ booths and every type, size and style of RV on the market,” said Marketing Director David Kelly.

“With the addition of new entertainment and more seminars, we’re anticipating record crowds this year.

We’re also renewing the 2-day pass, so the public will have two full days to see everything at the SuperShow at no additional cost.”

The theme of the 2018 Florida RV SuperShow is “Wherever You Roam, You’re Always at Home”. With hundreds of RVs on display and educational seminars, the SuperShow is the place to trade-in your old RV or get all the information you need to get acquainted with the RV lifestyle. And some of Florida’s finest campgrounds and resorts will have booth exhibits to show attendees the best camping opportunities found anywhere.

A favorite of all visitors to the SuperShow is the FREE entertainment. From clowns and unicycle riders to Barbershop Quartets and BagPipe Bands, the SuperShow has enough entertainment to keep everyone busy the entire day. And take advantage of the FREE shuttle service inside the SuperShow that will carry visitors from exhibit to exhibit.

Seminars are presented throughout the day at the SuperShow making it easy to attend the ones you want to see. National RV Writer Bob Marx host two seminars daily. “RVing 101-What You Will Need to Know” and “Full Time & Extended RV Travel”.

Additional seminars include Basic RV Maintenance, Weight and Tire Issues, Generator Maintenance and Guided RV Tours.

The Super Rally celebrates its 31st year at the SuperShow. This RV rally is opened to any and all RV clubs and the general public and includes several amenities including FREE admission to the SuperShow all five public days, meeting facilities for your club, FREE coffee and donuts every morning and seminars. Mindfulness and weight loss Mindfulness training may improve the effectiveness of intensive weight management programs, according to a small study published in the Endocrine Society’s Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism.

Individuals who participated in mindfulness training as part of an intensive weight management program lost more weight in six months than other program participants who did not attend mindfulness courses. The findings are the result of research from the University of Warwick and the Warwickshire Institute for the Study of Diabetes Endocrinology and Metabolism at University Hospitals Coventry and Warwickshire NHS Trust.

Mindfulness is a mind-body practice where individuals learn to achieve heightened awareness of their current state of mind. Practices of mindful eating include: eating when hungry and stopping when full, selecting nutritionally-dense foods, and eating slowly to savor each bite.

Obesity worldwide has nearly tripled since 1975, according to the World Health Organization. As of 2016, more than 1.9 billion adults worldwide met the criteria for overweight or obesity.

Drug cocktail could help diabetics Researchers at Mount Sinai have discovered a novel combination of two classes of drugs that induces the highest rate of proliferation ever observed in adult human beta cells—the cells in the pancreas that produce insulin. The result is an important step toward a diabetes treatment that restores the body’s ability to produce insulin.

“We are very excited about this new observation because for the first time,

we are able to see rates of human cell beta cell replication that are sufficient to replenish beta cell mass in human beings,” said Andrew Stewart, MD, Director of the Mount Sinai Diabetes, Obesity, and Metabolism Institute and lead author of the study. “We have discovered a drug combination that makes beta cells regenerate at rates that are suitable for treatment. The next big hurdle is figuring out how to deliver them directly to the pancreas.”

According to Dr. Stewart, none of the diabetes drugs currently on the market can induce beta cell regeneration in people with diabetes. In parallel with the Mount Sinai work, other researchers are studying pancreatic transplantation, beta cell transplantation, and stem cell replacement of beta cells for people with diabetes, but none of these approaches is in widespread use.

Approximately 30 million people in the United States have diabetes and nearly 50 to 80 million more are living with prediabetes (also called “metabolic syndrome”). Diabetes occurs when there are not enough beta cells in the pancreas, or when those beta cells secrete too little insulin, the hormone required to keep blood sugar levels in the normal range. Diabetes can lead to major medical complications: heart attack, stroke, kidney failure, blindness, and limb amputation.

Exercise is essential ~ Let’s get to the bottom of why

ith a New Year underway and America’s resolve to “get healthy and fit” in 2019, we journalists are tasked with trotting out the good ol’ “getin-shape” piece each January – and for a good reason.

There is mounting evidence that exercise can stave off chronic illnesses like heart disease, cancer, osteoporosis, diabetes, obesity, depression and dementia. Fitness activities have also been shown to have a positive effect on the workings of our genes, the immune system, repair mechanisms and other bodily functions. Not only will fitness improve quality of life, but it can extend it too.

Scientists say that those who are 65 today can expect to live about 13 more years in good health – until age 78. But today’s active and fit 65-year-olds will (on average) gain an additional six years of disability-free life expectancy.

So let’s break a sweat, burn some calories and bust a move.

one can partake in classes like yoga, Zumba and water aerobics. These classes are a great way to meet new people, have fun and learn something new.

Four must-do types of exercise

Be sure to incorporate exercises that will improve endurance, strength, balance and flexibility.

Endurance exercises keep your heart, lungs and circulatory system healthy. Brisk walking, jogging, dancing, yard work, biking, swimming and tennis are all excellent ways to increase endurance.

The American Heart Association recommends adults get at least 150 minutes of moderate to vigorous activity

balance. Activities like ice skating, paddle-boarding, running in the shallow end of a pool and regular walking will increase lower body strength and help reduce the likelihood of a spill.

Flexibility exercises like yoga or Pilates will improve joint mobility and posture. Basic body stretches will also contribute to freedom of movement.

Stretching should only be done when the muscles are warm. Stretch just to the point of slight pain and hold for at least 10 seconds. Avoid sudden jerky movements which can result in tissue injury.

Set your fitness goals

Decide what kind of activities you are going to pursue to improve your endurance, strength, balance and flexibility. Create a diary and chart your progress.

We all have competing interests in our lives that can get in the way of staying in shape. But let’s face it. Is there anything more important than your health?

The first step is to set aside time to exercise. Start with a goal of 30 minutes per day. If you can’t manage that, three 10-minute segments will do.

Try to workout first thing in the morning before the days’ activities start piling up.

Strength in numbers

When it comes to hanging in there for the long run, there is strength in numbers.

A walking group or pickleball partner can help you stay motivated and accountable on days when you feel like playing hooky.

In just a few weeks, you may start to see and feel a difference.

Monitoring your caloric intake, eating a plantbased or Mediterranean diet, reaching your ideal weight, and engaging in life with family and friends will also contribute to disability-free longevity.

The advantages of exercise are many: selfconfidence, renewed energy, improved appearance, reduced stress, better-fitting clothes, more happiness and perhaps best of all, the satisfaction of knowing you are doing everything possible to stave off chronic illness and add quality years to your life.

hen you exercise, eat healthy, watch your weight, and get age-appropriate screening and vaccinations, your body is in a much better position to bounce back from whatever virus, accident or injury may come along.

Similarly, focusing on your financial fitness can help build immunities to fight whatever monetary ailments may come along – such as the tumultuous stock market that we are seeing now. This volatility can make one feeling panicky, anxious and even a little queasy. But there is a remedy.

Here are the things I recommend to achieve financial strength and health.

Review your budget That’s right, I actually uttered the b-word. It never ceases to amaze me how many folks—on all ends of the income spectrum—fail to put together even a basic budget. I can’t tell you how many clients have asked, even mockingly, “Surely you don’t need to do a budget, right?”

Sorry to burst your bubble, but even a Certified Financial Planner™ does a monthly budget. While you don’t have to be down to the penny in every category, once you start to track and write down what you’re spending, you’ll most likely be surprised at where the money is actually going.

Something that has worked for our family is to build in a goals-based component, usually around travel or some other milestone we want to achieve. If you’re looking to take that ski vacation next year, it will be a lot easier if you start putting money away regularly now.

Review your distribution/contribution rate If you are still working, how much are you contributing to your 401(k)? Most employers will offer to match contributions dollar-for-dollar up to a certain amount, such as 3% of your income. Taking advantage of this matching amount is a no-brainer; it is essentially equivalent to a 100% investment return. You’d be surprised how many people don’t take advantage of this “free” money.

If you are retired, then you are likely in the distribution phase from your investment portfolio. Are you taking money out at a sustainable rate that will not eventually deplete your investments? You may have been planning on living off the income generated by the portfolio, but the persistently low interest rate environment we have been in may have thrown a wrench into this strategy.

Furthermore, when calculating the annual withdrawal rate, make sure to include not only the money that comes out regularly each month, but also the lump sum distributions. When accounting for these “one-time” withdrawals, you may find out that your true distribution rate is unsustainable over the long term.

Review your asset allocation You have probably heard the advice to rebalance your portfolio on a regular basis, but are you really doing it? If so, how often?

Studies have consistently shown over decades that left to their own devices, most investors will not only neglect to properly rebalance their portfolio, but will actually do the opposite—they will buy more of what has recently done well.

The whole point of rebalancing is to “buy low and sell high,” a very easy concept to grasp on paper, but very difficult to implement, especially in times of heightened market volatility.

Also, this should present a good opportunity to evaluate the appropriateness of your long-term asset allocation target. It’s been very easy the last few years to convince oneself to have a portfolio heavy in stocks, because they have done so well.

Conversely, it could also be tempting to be a prisoner of the moment and abandon stocks at this time of turbulence. Think about not only what your long-term asset allocation target is, but more importantly what caused you to establish that target.

Review your debt We’ve all heard of the concept of “good” and “bad” debt. Debt related to your primary residence, such as a mortgage or home equity loan, is usually considered to be the best form of borrowing, while high-cost debt, such as those on credit cards, is widely deemed the worst.

If you are carrying credit card debt, get rid of it immediately. Most credit cards carry annual interest rates of around 30%, an almost impossible rate of return to count on earning with any of your investments.

In terms of your mortgage, it wouldn’t be a bad idea to shop your rate. While interest rates are no longer at their lowest levels, they’re still lower than historical averages. Often the financial institution that holds your current mortgage will allow you to refinance the rate lower, if possible, without incurring closing costs.

Don’t neglect your financial health as we get ready to turn the calendar to 2019.

onsider switching to a plant-based diet for the New Year. Research has shown such diets can help to prevent – and may even reverse -- chronic diseases like type 2 diabetes, heart disease (America’s number one killer), obesity, and autoimmune conditions.

Not only that, plant-based diets help the planet by reducing emissions, slowing deforestation, and preserving animal habitat. One study showed that 20 servings of vegetables produce fewer greenhouse gas emissions (involved in food production) than one serving of beef.

Vegetarian diets are budget-friendly too.

With that in mind, here’s a nutritional and tasty vegetarian dish adapted from Fresh From Florida to help you launch a planet- and human-healthy start in 2019. Always strive to buy local – or better yet – grow your own veggies.

Florida Roasted Vegetable Ratatouille Ingredients: 1 eggplant, large, diced 1 zucchini, large, diced 1 yellow squash, large diced 1 pint cherry tomatoes 3 cloves, minced 4-6 basil leaves, chopped 3 Tbsp. olive oil Sea salt & fresh ground pepper or your favorite seasoning mix

Directions: Preheat oven to 425 degrees. Prep all ingredients as stated. In a baking pan, add the cherry tomatoes, one tablespoon olive oil, salt and pepper or seasoning mix. Mix to coat and set aside.

In a separate baking pan, add all the remaining ingredients, 1-2 tablespoons of olive oil, and salt and pepper (or seasoning mix). Do not add the basil at this point. Place both pans in the oven for about 15 minutes, or until desired tenderness.

Remove the pans and combine ingredients into one bowl.

Add chopped basil leaves. Serve over brown rice or quinoa.

ne day it happens. You know you hear a constant noise. It may be anything from a low buzz to a ringing or a whistle – even the sounds of chirping crickets. But wait. It’s winter and crickets shouldn’t be chirping.

If this describes you, you may be one of over 50 million Americans who suffers from tinnitus. (Of Latin origin, the word means “to ring or tinkle.”)

Almost everyone experiences the ring of tinnitus at some point in their life, but if it lasts more than six months, it is considered chronic.

This irritating adversary can affect your quality of life and may be responsible for fatigue, stress, sleep problems, concentration issues, memory problems, depression, anxiety and irritability.

Men and smokers have a higher risk for the condition. Fortunately, tinnitus usually isn’t a sign of something serious, but that doesn’t stop it from being annoying.

Tinnitus is often a symptom of an underlying condition. Some common tinnitus culprits include age-related hearing loss, earwax blockage, inner-ear nerve damage from exposure to loud noises, middle ear problems like tumors or infections, TMJ (temporomandibular joint dysfunction), and injuries to the brain’s hearing center. Stress, anxiety, depression and lack of sleep may also cause this sensory disturbance.

Sometimes the noise abates when you stop taking certain medications such as diuretics, cancer or quinine medications, antibiotics, antidepressants, aspirin, and other

nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs.

In rare cases, a blood vessel disorder may be to blame, which could manifest itself through atherosclerosis (hardening of the arteries), high blood pressure, turbulent blood flow and malformed capillaries.

Tinnitus that accompanies hearing loss or dizziness could signal Meniere’s disease.

In many cases, the exact cause is never discovered. Nevertheless, it’s important to see a doctor and try to identify the cause, which may be treatable.

Some common-sense precautions may help prevent certain types of tinnitus: using hearing protection when around loud noises, turning down high-volume music, maintaining cardiovascular health through regular exercise, following a healthy diet, and treating any underlying depression, stress or sleep disorders.

It’s good to know that tinnitus often becomes less noticeable and more manageable in the long run. Most people who are diagnosed learn to ignore the sounds over time; some use devices to mask the hums. Other therapies are being evaluated through various clinical trials. No single approach seems to work for everyone, so you may need to experiment with various techniques before finding what works best for you.

Taken Without a Grain of Salt I

t seems there’s a critical age when each New Year adds another medical specialist. My husband, for one, has just acquired a new “ologist,” whose expertise has further complicated our lives.

For longevity’s sake, we already practice a low-fat, low-carb, Paleo, Mediterranean, don’t-eatwhite-foods lifestyle. Mostly. But if we wanted to extend our time on Golden Pond, this new doctor urged my darling to significantly reduce his salt intake.

Eager to be supportive, I purged pantry and frig of all offending foods.

Out went the ketchup, soy sauce, crackers, and the can of mixed nuts.

Even benign cottage cheese was now a potential killer. Ever read the sodium content on packaged bread items? Positively terrifying! And the pancake mix?

There’s enough salt content to keep you afloat even if you can’t swim.

Then it was off to the supermarket to replace said items. With my most powerful pair of reading glasses on, I examined the fine print on jars, bottles, cans, and loaves. I was heavily into condiments when my cell phone rang. It was him, reminding me I’d been gone for almost three hours. I promised I’d be home as soon as I finished researching the dairy aisle.

The new reality is that more home cooking is in order. I don’t mind preparing pasta sauce, soup,

or salad dressing, but baking my own bread? Sorry, but my pioneer instincts stretch only so far. Surely there’s a salt-free loaf wrapped in plastic and sealed with a twist tie.

Success was mine at the local health food store. I decided to sample a slice, which was a tad tastier than a piece of cardboard.

My search would have to continue.

Dining in is one thing when your diet is restricted, but dining out is quite another. And for better or worse, recreational eating is a major part of our social life, particularly during winter when returning to Florida involves dinners with friends not seen in many months. Now, added to requirements for an acceptable restaurant (which include proper chair comfort, noise level, and air temperature), I will have to ask, “Will the chef agree to cook our food without salt?”

We are adjusting, gradually. I’m learning that sodium-free, lowsodium, reduced-sodium, light sodium, don’t all mean the same thing. I’m beginning to enjoy our salt-less peanut butter, and the memory of that awful bread is slowly fading. My husband is benefitting from our healthier, though somewhat blander, diet.

Maybe shaking the salt habit won’t be too hard after all. And our lease on Golden Pond may be extended for a few more lowsodium years.

New museum tells story of the American Studio Glass Movement

he latest entry into St. Petersburg’s vibrant art scene is the three-story Imagine Museum on Central Avenue, fittingly named after the Imagine Charter School that once was located there. The nine galleries on the first floor and six on the second display amazing and comprehensive collections of major works by founding, leading, current and emerging artists who work in the field of studio glass.

Before the 1960s, contemporary glass art was made in big factories such as Tiffany or Steuben, but in 1962, Harvey Littleton and Dominik Labino collaborated to build the first kiln designed to fit into an artist’s studio.

It Burns, Mommy!

W

hen we get a cut or scrape nowadays, we reach for a tube of Bacitracin, Neosporin or some other expired antibiotic ointment found in the medicine cabinet.

But when I was a kid, the goto cure-all for everything was Merthiolate or Mercurochrome.

Both topical antiseptics burned upon application, and the only cure for that hellfire pain was Mom’s comforting blows upon the skin – at least until I got a little older and found that my own blows could be equally as soothing.

Now I’m sure my mother, like all of the other mothers, had the best of intentions.

It was the 1950s after all and the dawn of modern medicine. But it would take another 40 years before the good old FDA banned and stopped the sale of both products.

Evidently, they were worried about the poisonous ingredients found in them: Thiomersal and Merbromin, both which contain mercury. The FDA says mercury in these tinctures could be harmful to humans if left on the skin for extended periods or if ingested.

Extended periods?!? Really?!?

Getting painted with Mercurochrome or Merthiolate was the ulti-

mate status symbol of our youth. It was our warpaint; our first tattoo. Our burning, stinging badge of courage.

Of course, we would leave it for as long as possible and continue reapplying it until the scar had disappeared completely – likely a month or two, or three, later.

I played football in my freshman year of high school, and whenever I got a cut or scratch, rather than hiding them beneath a BandAid, I would put a good slathering of the reddishbrown stuff on my wounds and when classmates (mainly girls) would ask about them, I would nonchalantly reply “football.”

It was my way of letting them know I was a macho jock. (In their minds, probably, a mucho jerk.)

For the past several years on Veterans Day, we’ve been getting our complimentary meal at Golden Corral where servings of steak rival many upscale restaurants. I was fantasizing recently, that if Merthiolate were still available, I could swab it on any scars, cuts or scratches before entering the restaurant. Our usual server would ask, “What happened to your arms, Mike?”

I would smile and say in my casual manner, “Vietnam.”

Michael Wright plans on looking into the VA soon about having his left cornea replaced. As an organ donor, he couldn’t live with the guilt if he donated a bad eye.

o ask why the Courtesy of Straz Center Broadway musical Hamilton is so popular is like asking why the Beatles found overnight fame in 1964 or why Elvis became an instant teen sensation eight years prior. In each case, what exploded onto the scene was universally determined to be fresh, exciting and—most Hamilton, the musical, comes to the Straz Center of importantly—100 the Performing Arts, Feb. 12 – March 10. percent “cool” by its followers.

Rock ‘n’ roll superstars are an easy concept to understand. But a musical based on a long-dead politician from your American History class? Now we’re exploring uncharted territory.

Hamilton has become one of the biggest—if not the biggest—hits in Broadway history. It has earned 11 Tony awards and a Pulitzer Prize for drama.

Let’s consider why it’s a “must see” musical.

Its cast is composed of multiple ethnic groups. The Caucasian foundingfathers and builders have undergone a 21st-century metamorphosis with a racially-diverse troupe. “Our cast looks like America looks now,” says Puerto Rican creator Lin-Manuel Miranda, “and that’s certainly intentional.”

The characters are both real and unforgettable. Hamilton’s amped-up actors are flawed flesh-and-blood human beings possessed of oversized egos, relentless determination and often-destructive temperaments. Miranda’s females are strong individuals who pursue their own paths, often independent of the men around them. Hamilton himself is fueled by ambition, obsessed with his legacy and owns a brilliant mind hampered by faulty judgment.

Nearly all the story is uniquely told through hip-hop lyrics. Miranda has painstakingly condensed hours of real-life historical arguments into minutes of point-by-point sparring expressed through rapid-fire rap. For example, a disagreement between Hamilton and his primary nemesis, Aaron Burr, becomes pared down to a heated hip-hop battle. By the way, Hamilton’s songs are catchy, the rhymes are razor-sharp and the dynamic vocals are first-rate. And you can even understand the words. *** Miranda’s musical romp, which took seven years to create, is a seamless integration of street-level rap and quality storytelling that takes the language of the common people and elevates it to artistic beauty.

Ben Brantley, the chief theater critic for the New York Times, has boldly declared, “I am loath to tell people to mortgage their houses and lease their children to acquire tickets to a hit Broadway show, but Hamilton might just about be worth it.”

The musical Hamilton comes to the Straz Center of the Performing Arts, Feb. 12 – March 10. Tickets are in high demand, but the folks at the Straz encourage everyone to continue to check strazcenter.org for ticket availability.

few years ago, the fact that an island was the birthplace of the first Secretary of the Treasury would have elicited very little excitement. But now, since the advent of the hit Broadway musical Hamilton, Nevis has become a must-see destination.

The very first line of the musical, “How does a bastard, orphan, son of a whore and a Scotsman, dropped in the middle of a forgotten spot in the Caribbean…,” hints to Nevis.

It’s the baby sister of St. Kitts; both are located in the West Indies, breathtakingly beautiful, and constitute one country. St. Kitts is the more outgoing, gregarious of the two; Nevis, shyer and quieter, is a place where goats, sheep, donkeys and monkeys roam.

Alexander Hamilton was never quite sure of his actual birth year, but it is believed to be 1755 or 1757. The Charlestown Nevis History Museum marks his birthplace where he was born out of wedlock. Here, the history and culture of Nevis are enticingly displayed, but the Alexander Hamilton section is where his remarkable life, accomplishments, military and political careers, and impact on the history of the U.S. are chronicled. Of course,

all of us are currently reminded of his contributions every time we reach for a $10 bill (which bears his image).

Hamilton brought a very progressive agenda to American politics. His early life (and the horrifying fact that he was born across the street from a slave trade podium) influenced his views on economic diversity, financial stability and racial equality.

Hamilton lived on Nevis until he was about 7 or 9 years old. At the time, sugar plantations were the main industry.

Hamilton never lived on the Hamilton family plantation, but the ruins can still be seen.

years ago and is where guests gather in the evening for canapés and drinks before moving on to dinner. This is the only sugar mill in the world that houses a restaurant, a place where guests will make many history-laden, stone-studded, candle-lit memories.

The Great House of the Hermitage Plantation, dating back to 1640, is said to be the oldest wooden house in the Caribbean. When Richard Lupinacci bought the run-down property in 1971, he moved eight old wooden houses from other areas on the island where they lay in disrepair. Each cottage, lovingly restored, promotes an old island feel and makes the property a living architectural museum. Adding to the authenticity is a slave privy from the 1740’s. A weekly pig roast featuring local dishes and a massive hog on a spit helps one connect with those who feasted likewise over 300 years ago.

In 1804, Hamilton was killed in a duel with Aaron Burr. Although he died tragically, he would likely be pleased to know that over 200 years later, people are making the trek to see and enjoy his early island home.

The Nisbet, the largest of the lot, is the Caribbean’s only historic sugar plantation on a beach. Remnants of the 18th Century plantation windmill greet visitors upon arrival. Those who get married on the property will get a coconut tree planted with their names on it. Nisbet is the most modern of the inns, with 36 rooms, each named after a local village, spread out over 30 acres.

Montpelier Plantation, once a historic ruin, was transformed into an inn in the 1960s and remains the lodging of choice for British aristocracy. The beautifully landscaped, manicured property with profusions of color popping up everywhere mixes handsomely with the stone remnants of the sugar mill factory it once was.
