APRIL LOVE:

News Connection USA, LLC Volume 29, Issue 4

n March we said a final goodbye to our lovely niece-in-law, Elizabeth Crosby Reeves, who learned 13 months ago she had terminal bile duct cancer. It was a horrific battle for the 48-year-old mother of two, but one she fought bravely. She was kind, beautiful, generous and loved -- about 400 people showed up for her memorial service. Elizabeth was one among an estimated half-million Americans who will die from cancer this year. It’s the second leading cause of death in the United States, exceeded only by heart disease. It can cause tremendous suffering for the patient, their families and communities. April is National Cancer Control Month, a federally endorsed observation that, since 1938, honors those have battled the disease, encourages research, and seeks to educate people on how to prevent cancer. Currently, record-breaking advances in cancer research are transforming cancer treatment to make it more effective and less toxic. Many more promising treatments and therapies are on the horizon. Immuno-oncology— teaching the body’s immune system to attack cancer—is especially exciting. And because of the Affordable Care Act, which came into force in 2014, insurers must cover recommended cancer screenings and other preventative services. They cannot deny coverage because of pre-existing conditions or limit coverage by putting annual dollar limits on most benefits. Right now, though, the best way to combat the disease is through prevention and early detection. Experts say that nearly half of all cancers can be prevented through healthy eating habits,

It’s All About the Earth, Yourself and Those Pesky Gators regular exercise, limiting sun exposure, living tobacco-free and avoiding excessive alcohol consumption. Regular physicals and cancer screenings give patients the best chance for successful treatment. So why not make April the month to start loving yourself a little more. Following these preventative guidelines will not only make your quality of life better, but hopefully it will make your life longer as well.

Whether you are spring cleaning or spring breaking, this issue Lifestyles After 50 should be a pleasant distraction. To celebrate Earth Day on April 22, we’ll introduce you to America’s first solar city— it’s going up right here in Florida.

And with our beautiful weather comes increased gator roaming (they’re looking for love in all the wrong places), so, just in case you spot one floating in your pool, we’ve talked to one of Florida’s licensed nuisance gator trappers. She’s fearless. Been thinking about adding a pop of color to your décor? We show you how with Pantone’s Color of the Year, Ultra Violet. On these pages you’ll also learn about new Medicare cards, tax-deferred bonds, a new shingles vaccine, new blood pressure guidelines, and other health and senior news. For a special treat, check out our recipe for gator wings. And of course, our his and her satirical columnists will keep you in stiches. Parting is Such Sweet Sorrow...For Some

hen it comes to spring cleaning—or spring clean out, the world seems to consist of two types of people: those practical types who are able to divest themselves of inanimate objects once they’ve outlived their usefulness, and those who would sentimentally cling to an old rubber band. My husband is the latter. He has, what I like to call, a “discarding disorder.” I should have recognized the red flag when we were first dating but I was too blinded by love. He had proudly pointed out this anomalous antique breakfront which he trimmed down to occupy a small corner of his living room. It was a gift from his ex-mother-in-law and almost completely devoid of all charm and character after the reconstruction. As I gazed at the not very attractive results, the nicest comment I could come up was, “Wouldn’t you have been better off buying something new?” The little skirmishes continued over the years including a clash over “Holy Mustard Sauce!” a hole-filled, stained cardigan the color of French’s mustard that has lived long past its shelf life. I also lost the battle over the giant tortoise shell wall hanging, the hula girl lamp, and law books that probably haven’t been relevant since the turn of the century.

Not this century—the last one. The most recent negotiation concerned a battered piece of furniture that had become nothing more than a dumping ground for other unnecessary articles (until his back was turned). “But we’ve had it for such a long time. We can’t get rid of it just like that,” he said, unsuccessfully trying to snap his fingers. “All the more reason to let it go,” I responded. “ I s n ’t t h e r e somewhere else we can use it?” he pleaded. “What if we cut off the legs and…” “No,” I said abruptly. “No carpentry.” “Maybe someone in the family can use it,” he said optimistically. “Then we could at least have visitation rights.” “Can’t think of anyone,” I replied. “How about Aunt Sally?” he queried. “That’s not practical. She moved to Alaska.” “Oh, right.” After working our way through immediate family members, first cousins, and second cousins once removed, I finally got him to agree. I tripped and nearly fell over his favorite old wingtips (age unknown) as I rushed to the phone to call Goodwill. I needed to get there before he could figure out a way to turn that piece into a planter.

Californians Ruth and Elliot Handler manufactured dollhouse furniture, which they sold under their company name of Mattel. While successful, the Handlers were always casting about for one special item that would make Mattel an iconic name in the toy world. In the early 1950s, the Handlers’ daughter, Barbara (b. 1941), had enjoyed playing with dolls. Not the run-of-themill, cherub-faced, infant variety, but shapely teenage paper dolls that came with fashionable cutout wardrobes. Ruth opined that Mattel should offer a three-dimensional doll, designed as a young woman and with an appeal to older girls. On a 1956 trip to Switzerland the Handlers serendipitously found a doll much like the one Ruth had envisioned. “Lilli” was a German adult novelty toy that, unbeknownst to the Handlers, was based on a cartoon character who was a prostitute.

Back home the couple spent three years developing a clean-cut counterpart to naughty Lilli that would proudly bear their daughter’s name. On Barbie’s “official” birthdate—March 9, 1959—the doll debuted at a New York toy convention. On that day, Barbie’s real-life namesake was a shy 17-year-old attending Los Angeles’s Hamilton High School. First-version Barbie earned mixed reviews, with some critics grumbling that the voluptuous toy was too expensive ($3 at a time when the hourly minimum wage was $1) and, at 11.5 inches, too small in comparison to traditional dolls. The main problem, though, was Barbie’s overt sexiness. Sears quickly declared her unfit for their store. However, Barbie quickly flew off everyone else’s shelves and eventually became the bestselling doll in history, with worldwide sales of 1 billion units. Feminists often railed against Barbie, labeling her a vacuous bimbo and crying out that her proportional measurements (36-18-33) were unrealistic and potentially unhealthy for impressionable young girls who wanted to emulate her. In 1997, Barbie’s body mold was redesigned and given a wider waist; in 2016, Mattel introduced several new body types. At age 18, Barbara Handler married Allen Segal. They had two children, including a daughter named Cheryl. There’s no doubt that Cheryl Segal was raised with the usual delights of any typically well-off southern California girl. Except for one. She never owned a Barbie doll.

FINAL PHASE NOW SELLING DON’T MISS OUT!

Help! My Wife Is Having A Power Surge! T

he formula for converting Fahrenheit to Celsius is quite simple: (°F - 32) x 5/9 = °C (and vice-versa). But it becomes more complicated in our household where we have two additional temperature readings: MCT (Mike’s Comfort Temperature) and that of my wife, Joy. The conversion formula here is: MCT – 25˚ = JCT. It all began the moment Joy had her first hot flash, or shall we say, power surge. While dining with friends she asked, “Is it hot in here, or is it just me?” As if on cue, the other four ladies left the table, leaving the Joy of my life to wonder whether she might be contagious. Shortly thereafter, they returned with their hands full of paper towels, wet napkins and one handheld paper fan. They began regaling her with their personal antidotes for dealing with these episodes. Interestingly, the most successful one turned out to be the use of smelling salts. I was soon to learn that “mood swing” was neither a golfing term nor a type of porch furniture. Joy now sleeps on top of the bedspread. I sleep beneath two blankets and wear two pair of socks. As recently as yesterday, I asked her “Honey, would you mind if I bump the thermostat up just three degrees?” “Put a sweater on!” she blurted, her voice full of compassion.

One time, as Joy was resting, I was in a snuggle mood. I plopped down alongside her on the bed suggesting, “How ‘bout a hug?” Boy, was that terrible timing. In a flash she bolted upright, both arms extended in fending-off posture. “For your own safety, step away from the woman! I repeat, step away from the woman!” The cats shot out of the bed and streaked down the stairs. I wisely followed suit. Do all husbands go through this? I’m going to ask my good friend Jim. We’ve invited him and his family to have Sunday dinner with us. “Is there anything we should bring?” he asked. “No, just bring yourselves.” I replied. “Wait! There is something you might bring.” “Sure!” said Jim. “Dessert?” “No!” I corrected. “Parkas.”

eginning in April and continuing through April 2019, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) will begin mailing out new Medicare cards. Cards will be sent out to select states in waves. Here in Florida, these cards should start arriving sometime after June. Instead of a Social Security Number, the new card will have a unique Medicare number. This is designed to deter the theft of Social Security numbers, help protect identities and keep personal information more secure. Medicare coverage and benefits will stay the same. Medicare will automatically mail new cards at no cost to the address on file with the Social Security Administration. So, make sure your address is up-to-date. An address can be updated easily by signing in to or creating an account at ssa.gov/myaccount or by calling 1-800772-1213. TTY users can call 1-800-3250778.

approved by Medicare know that Medicare is replacing the old cards. They are ready to accept your new card when you need care. 3. Beware of people contacting you about your new Medicare card and asking you for your Medicare Number, personal information, or to pay a fee for your new card. Remember the new cards are free. Treat your Medicare Number like you treat your Social Security or credit card numbers. Medicare will never contact you uninvited to ask for your personal information.

Medicare coverage and benefits will stay the same.

When you receive your card, remember these three important tips: 1. Destroy your old Medicare card right away. 2. Use your new card. Doctors, other health care providers, and plans

Turning 65 soon? Start planning ahead. Once Medicare eligibility begins, you’ll have a 7-month Initial Enrollment Period to sign up. For most people, this is 3 months before, the month of, and 3 months after their 65th birthday. If you don’t sign up at age 65 and then decide to enroll later, you may pay a lifetime late enrollment penalty and you may have a gap in medical insurance coverage. There are exceptions, but play it safe, and ask your Medicare or Social Security representative about your personal situation. For more information about the new Medicare card, visit medicare.gov

The Miracle Season By MARK HIGLEy The book The Miracle Season took its author, Kathy Bresnahan, four long, tear-filled years to write. In it, the former volleyball coach at Iowa City West High School, tells the inspirational story of 17-year-old volleyball player Caroline Found who was killed in a moped accident on the way the hospital to visit her terminally ill mother. Her death, followed by that of her mother’s 12 days later, devastated her family and the Iowa community. It also sent her high school volleyball team into a nosedive – they lost their spirit, focus, and motivation to win. Now the motion picture by the same name is set to release April 6. The PG-rated film stars Academy Award winners Helen Hunt as team coach and William Hurt as Caroline’s father. The role of Caroline is played by up and comer Danika Yarosh; Erin Moriarty and Tiera Skovbye are teammates who help rally the squad. As the “setter” and leader of her team, Caroline or “Line,” as her friends called her, was the captain, the

star player, the one who had rallied her team to one state championship – then planned for another. In a scene from the movie, Caroline hops on the moped, flashes her infectious smile and tells Kelly, “This is our year, Kel!” After her tragic death, the tough love coach (Hunt) presses the girls to pull together and find a way to win. “I told you to win for Caroline,” she tells her girls, “but if we want to show her how much we miss her, we should just play, for joy.” “Live Like Line” becomes the team mantra which honors Line’s acts of kindness and her amazing spirit and accomplishments. The movie is directed by Sean McNamara, who had also directed Helen Hunt in Soul Surfer. And if The Miracle Season feels as though it’s similar in tone to the inspirational high school movie, Friday Night Lights, it may be because both screenplays were written by David Aaron Cohen. Hurt has also worked with McNamara -- the two just completed the action adventure fantasy film The

Helen Hunt (as Coach Kathy Bresnahan) advises the team King’s Daughter, which is to be released later this year. If you’re looking to take the grandchildren to a motivational movie that shows how resilience and determination pay off and how hope and optimism can trump tragedy, then this one should score big. Chances are, those grands may be cheering “Live Like Line” as they walk out of the theater. Mark Higley is an Emmy award-winning screenwriter who has written for many soap operas including One Life to Live and Days of our Lives.

CAUTION: Not All Tax-Free Bonds are the Same by DaviD Novak If there is one constant I have found to be true across the board with investors, it is that they don’t like paying taxes. Clients are always searching for ways to minimize or eliminate their tax obligations. Along these lines, tax-free municipal bonds have always been soughtafter because of their ability to generate income that is exempt from federal taxes. When considering their tax-free options, I am frequently asked which structure is better to own, municipal bond mutual funds, or the individual bonds themselves. The short answer is that there are benefits and drawbacks to both. Let’s look at how they each stack up in a few key areas: DIVERSIFICATION—This is an area where the bond mutual funds have an advantage. Most municipal bond funds own hundreds of different bonds, so an owner has exposure to different types of bonds (general obligation, revenue, etc.), but also different municipalities and different maturities. Obviously if investors choose to buy individual bonds, the onus is on them to construct a diversified portfolio. LIQUIDITY—Open-end bond mutual funds are liquid on a daily basis; like any other open-end mutual funds, they can be bought or sold

at the closing net asset value for the day. Furthermore, an investor buying $5,000 of the fund gets the same price as one who buys $50,000 of the fund. When buying individual municipal bonds, an investor often faces a certain investment minimum, which can be anywhere from $10,000 to $25,000, and sometimes even higher. Also, if the bond needs to be sold prior to its maturity date, an investor may be disappointed in the price they get. This is because they are more than likely selling to an institution, for which a face amount of $50,000 or even $100,000 is considered to be a small amount and therefore only worthy of a “low ball” bid. INCOME—Most individual bonds pay interest semi-annually at a fixed amount based on the bond’s coupon. By contrast, most bond funds pay interest every month, and do not pay a fixed amount; it will fluctuate with the general level of interest rates in the economy. Additionally, many investors choose to reinvest this monthly dividend back into the fund to have this money continue working for them, rather than just sitting in a cash account. As there is much more to discuss on this topic, we will continue with Part 2 next month.

SIX REASONS TO E-FILE F

financial advisory services

or taxpayers who still file a paper return, consider switching to e-file. The IRS expects 90 percent of individual taxpayers to file electronically in 2018. Choosing e-file and direct deposit for refunds remains the fastest and safest way to file a complete and accurate income tax return and receive a refund.

Here are the top six reasons why taxpayers should file electronically in 2018: • It is accurate and easy. E-file software helps taxpayers avoid mistakes by doing the math. The software uses a question-and-answer format that makes doing taxes easier. • It is secure. E-file uses modern encryption technology to protect tax returns. • It is convenient. Taxpayers can buy commercial tax software to e-file right from their home computer. They can also ask their tax preparer to file their tax return electronically. • Most e-filers get their refunds faster. The fastest method for a taxpayer to get a refund is to combine it with a direct deposit. • It’s often free. Many taxpayers can e-file for free through IRS Free File available at www.IRS.gov. Volunteer Income Tax Assistance offers free tax preparation to people who generally earned $54,000 or less. Tax Counseling for the Elderly generally helps people who are age 60 or older. • There are several options for making payments. Visit www.IRS.gov/payments for information on payment options.

High Blood Pressure: What You Need to Know T

here’s a new threshold for how we define hypertension among Americans. The numbers might surprise you. For 14 years, blood pressures over 140/90 were diagnosed as hypertension. The American Heart Association and American College of Cardiology recently introduced new guidelines to improve blood pressure control and prevent cardiovascular disease. Under these new standards, normal blood pressure is 120/80 or less, and hypertension is now considered when numbers are greater than 130/80. The change means more individuals, particularly seniors, will be diagnosed with hypertension. Some will receive recommendations for healthy lifestyle changes. Others will be prescribed medication to lower their pressure. Here is some important information about the new guidelines. Elevated Blood Pressure–Readings between 121-129/80 are considered elevated blood pressure. These patients will be instructed to adopt a series of lifestyle changes. Stages of Hypertension–Readings between 130139/80-89 are now classified stage 1 hypertension. If

New Vaccine is the Latest Defense Against Shingles I

f you are 50 or older, talk to your doctor about a new shingles vaccine sold under the name of Shingrix. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention previously recommended a vaccine called Zostavax, but now say Shingrix is the better option for most. The CDC’s Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices reports that clinical trials found the vaccine to be more than 90 percent effective in preventing shingles in those 50 and older. Zostavax, on the other hand, is anywhere from 38 percent to 70 percent effective, depending on age. Those who have had shingles or previously got Zostavax can be vaccinated with Shingrix to prevent shingles and its complications. Shingles, also known as herpes zoster, is caused by the varicella zoster virus (VZV), which also causes chickenpox. It’s a painful, blistering rash that can have lingering complications including postherpetic neuralgia, a pain that can last for months or years after the rash is gone. The risk of developing shingles increases with age with about 1 in 3 developing the disease at some point in their life. The CDC’s recommendation of Shingrix will make it more likely that it will be covered by insurance but check ahead with your insurance company. Broad coverage is expected to take effect starting in April.

LADY GATOR TRAPPER By TERRI BRyCE REEVES

’T

is spring. The season when an alligator’s fancy turns to thoughts of love. According to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC), the courtship begins in early April and mating occurs in May and June. This means alligators get restless and can wander into neighborhood retention ponds, backyards and pools where they usually aren’t welcome. That’s when Julie Harter’s phone starts ringing. As one of the state’s few female licensed nuisance alligator trappers, the five-foot, nine-inch brunette is on-call with the FWC 24 hours, seven days a week including holidays. Her territory covers East Hillsborough, from New Tampa to Sun City. “It’s a lifestyle,” said the 56-year-old grandmother. “I’ll be cooking a family dinner and get a call and I just have to tell the family, ‘Sorry. Gotta go!’” One time, she had to suspend a Mother’s Day dinner for two hours while she captured a nine-footer.

Harter said some people are in disbelief when a woman shows up to capture the gators. “Sometimes I play along and pretend I’m just a damsel in distress,” she said. But when she fetches her catch pole, loops it around the hissing gator’s head, jumps on its back, wraps the snout with electrical tape, and drags the thrashing creature to her truck, well, they pretty much know she’s the real deal. Her biggest catch was a 12-foot, eight-inch alligator that wandered into the backyard of a Tampa Palms neighborhood. It was more than a nuisance. “It had killed an 85-pound golden retriever,” she said. An estimated 1.3 million gators occupy the state but alligators seldom bite people and fatalities from such occurrences are rare. Over the last 10 years, Florida has averaged six unprovoked bites per year that were serious enough to require professional medical treatment. The likelihood of a Florida resident being seriously injured during an unprovoked alligator incident is roughly one in 3.2 million. From 1948 to 2017, 24 bites resulted in human fatalities. Amazingly, Harter has never been bitten. That could be because of the advice given to her by her trapper husband, Billy Harter, who trained her. “He always told me, ‘Treat each one like it’s the first one you ever caught. Don’t get sloppy or complacent because that’s the one that’ll get you.’” In 2003, he was killed in a tragic helicopter accident; she figured her trapping days were over. Then she got a call from the state asking her to apply to take over his trapping contract. She already had the gear, the experience and the license, so she agreed. On her own she became known as the Lady Gator Trapper; Julie Harter with a seven-foot, seven-inch gator captured her license plate is personalized recently in a front yard pond in Thonotosassa. with the moniker.

Besides her trapping career, Harter has a flexible day job at Hope Services which helps people with disabilities find jobs. Prior to that, the Lakeland resident spent over 30 years with the Polk County school system as a certified special education teacher. Harter catches over 200 gators a year. Young alligators under four feet are released back into the wild. Over four feet and they’re headed for the processor. This used to be a pretty lucrative gig back in the day when alligator hides could fetch $40 a foot, but the rise of alligator farming and permitted legal harvesting has driven prices down to $3 a foot. Meat prices have held at $10 per pound. Harter keeps some of the meat for herself and her family and sells some to restaurants and individuals. “It’s really good. It’s a beautiful white meat that tastes like a mixture of chicken, pork and fish,” she said. Since nuisance trappers don’t get paid by the state, there is little, if any, profit with the current market. “I don’t do it for the money,” she said. “I love what I do and consider it a service and a great privilege.” See a recipe for gator wings in this issue. Those interested in purchasing alligator meat from Harter may reach her at ladygatortrapper@gmail.com.

Book Review

AGING FAMOUSLY:

Review by KATHy MeGyeRi

A

Author: elizabeth Meade Howard Jefferson Park Press, 2017 349 pages

Readers, we’d love to hear your advice and tips for successful aging. Send your thoughts in 250 words or less to Terri@LifestylesAfter50.com before April 15. We may publish them in a future edition.

Follow Those You Admire to Living Long and Well

ward winning reporter, writer, documentary filmmaker and lecturer at the University of Virginia, Elizabeth Meade Howard, became the family elder after the death of her prominent father, a New York/Los Angeles advertising executive. To cope with his loss and adjust to her new status, she spent a decade seeking guidance from seniors she respected for their resourcefulness, resilience, imagination, adaptability and above all, their successful aging. Many were famous. In her new book, Aging Famously, she’s cobbled together 33 intimate interviews from the likes of TV anchorman Walter Cronkite, actors Hal Holbrook, Carol Channing, Nanette Fabray and Dennis Weaver; former New York Mayor Ed Koch, reincarnation researcher Dr. Ian Stevenson, and theologian Bishop John Shelby Spong. Civil rights leader Rosa Parks adds brief thoughts as well. Collectively, the interviewees were resourceful, engaged, purposeful and keenly aware of the passing of time. They continued their passions, explored new ones, focused on the future and overwhelmingly showed disdain for retirement – even as their health declined.

Said Himan Brown, a radio producer who had worked with many stars, “The minute you’ve retired, you’ve performed your funeral.” Another recurring theme: Gratefully accepting life’s offerings and the accompanying pain. These people didn’t waste time wondering what might have been. The cover of the book portrays the cupcake with a single lighted candle that President Obama gave to White House journalist Helen Thomas in 2009, for her 89th birthday. Interestingly, they shared the mutual birthdate of August 4. She died 4 years later at 92. “Life is a gift,” Thomas had said. “Try to make the world better if you can.” One stands in awe of Howard’s ability to obtain access to these celebrities and make them comfortable enough to bare their souls as she probed their innermost thoughts about old age and dying. Howard personifies Henry David Thoreau’s advice that none are so old as those who have outlived enthusiasm. Although Howard’s own health is declining and she is losing friends and family, she embraces the words of her mentors and proclaims, “If they age well, I can too.”

Health

Allergies, Sneezing and Leaking, Oh My! By SUE PERSIA pring allergy season is underway and so are the irrepressible sneezes that come with it. Some women know all too well that sneezing can lead to the uncontrollable release of urine known as urinary incontinence (UI). Some accept urinary incontinence as just a part of getting older or having given birth: “I just pee a little when I sneeze, cough or laugh.” It is true that urinary incontinence is very common, affecting over 25 million people in the United States. The good news is that most cases of incontinence are treatable or very manageable. As a women’s health therapist and pelvic floor specialist, it is my mission to help women move past the embarrassment often associated with urinary incontinence. If you notice that incontinence

S

causes you to avoid activities, limit social interactions, and even struggle to get a good night’s sleep, please discuss your symptoms with your doctor. This article contains strategies that address common types of incontinence: urge and stress. If you need support beyond the tips offered here, please contact your doctor or a women’s health therapist to discuss if pelvic floor therapy is right for you.

Strategies: Urge drills help decrease urgency until you find a restroom or may extinguish the urge completely. When

you experience a sudden urge, pause, breathe and stay calm. Now, perform five quick pelvic floor contractions with full relaxation between reps. A pelvic floor contraction is a lifting up and drawing in of the pelvic floor muscles as if trying to stop the flow of urine. Performing pelvic floor contractions quiets the bladder. Repeat as needed. The urge usually returns but with less intensity each time. The pelvic brace helps decrease urinary leakage associated with physical exertion like lifting, coughing or sneezing. It is a well-timed contraction of the pelvic floor muscles immediately prior to stress or exertion. To prepare for those critical moments, first practice the pelvic brace with no exertion. Once you feel more confident, try engaging this strategy with physical stress. Start with a small cough and gradually progress until you are using this strategy with more functional activities such as lifting your grandchild or hitting a tennis ball. Eventually you will retrain the muscles to engage with unexpected stressors like a sneeze.

Sue Persia is a women’s health occupational therapist with advanced training in pelvic floor health. Visit her webpage at www.synergyrehabfortmyers.com for more information.

IT’S NOT A HEARING AID If you are one of the 48 million Americans suffering from hearing loss, we have great news for you. An innovative team of doctors and engineers have teamed up to create a truly revolutionary personal sound amplifier. It’s not a hearing aid– those require trips to the audiologist, hearing tests and can cost as much as $5,000. It’s also not a cheap amplifier that just makes everything louder, making it virtually impossible to hear conversations. It’s Perfect Choice HD UltraTM… and it may be the perfect solution for you. Perfect Choice HD UltraTM is the first PSAP that features Dynamic Speech Optimization (DSO). This technology enables the device to prioritize the spoken word over other sounds. These noises are generally in different frequencies than voices, but they can drown out the words and make conversations hard to understand. This invention targets the frequencies of the human voice and amplifies the words. It’s even designed to diminish feedback even at higher volumes, so you can customize your hearing experience to meet your needs. Just imagine how great it will feel to be able to understand what people are saying… the first time they say it. That’s only the beginning. This unit is small and lightweight at less than an ounce, so it hides discreetly and comfortably behind your ear. The only way people will know you have it on is if you tell them. Plus, its moisture resistant coating

National Decorating Month

SEEING PURPLE

Ultra Violet, Pantone’s Color of the Year

1

BY TERRI BRYCE REEVES

A

pril is National Decorating Month, a time to take stock in your surroundings and see what areas need improvement. Are there past decorating decisions you regret? Furniture and accessories that are outdated? Is a major makeover in store? Or a tweak? Whatever you decide, consider Pantone’s Color of the Year: Ultra Violet. If you follow the latest trends, you may have noticed an uptick in the use of this blue-purple shade in clothing, home décor, makeup, kitchen appliances, watches, and more. Each year, the folks at the Pantone Color Institute select a color they think reflects current events and popular trends. Pantone says that Ultra Violet speaks to the rebellion of cultural pop icons Prince (Purple Rain) and glam rocker David Bowie who died in 2016. It’s both complex and contemplative, futuristic, and the color of the cosmos. Ultra Violet is not the shrinking variety. It can be used to create bold, energetic spaces; mystical spa-like settings, or, when muted, offer a calm escape from today’s over-stimulated world. When decorating with more than one color, follow the 60-30-10 rule for the best results: 60 percent as the primary color, 30 percent as the secondary and 10 percent as the accent.

Here are some ideas to create a beautifully-styled room:

5 2

3

3. Muted hues can be used to create a serene, elegant refuge. 1. Vivid hues of purple breathe life and energy into a neutral room. Accessories such as pillows, throws and rugs are relatively inexpensive ways to update without a long-term commitment. Paintings can set a mood or express your personality. 2. Shades of violet bring a majestic presence to any table. Add green for a nature-inspired palette.

4. Lavender-scented candles and violet towels can transform a bathroom into a relaxing home spa.

4

5. Floral arrangements are easy ways to update and renew. Lavender, heather and purple roses are trending right now. Lifestyles After 50 • Suncoast • April 2018 • page 27
