n 1964, more than half of all U.S. deaths were caused by cardiovascular disease. That year, President Lyndon B. Johnson established American Heart Month as a way to get more people to focus on heart health.

Since then, better treatments, prevention and medications have come along, and the percentage of those dying because of heart disease has decreased. Still, it’s the leading cause of death.

These days, one out of four Americans will die from the ailment, and millions of us have at least one of the top three risk factors: high blood pressure, high cholesterol and smoking (which plays havoc with blood vessels and is the leading cause of preventable death).

Conditions and behaviors that affect one’s risk for heart disease: Obesity, which affects one in three adults.

Diabetes, which can damage both blood vessels and nerves; it affects about 10 percent of the population.

Physical inactivity. A mere 20 percent get the recommended 150 minutes a week of moderate-intensity activity.

Unhealthy eating patterns. Only one in ten eats enough fruits and vegetables each day, and most people consume too much sugar and salt.

Small steps to get you headed in the right direction: Take a walk. Even a ten-minute stroll beats lounging in the recliner and 2.5 hours of walking each week can cut your risk of heart disease by 30 percent. One study

THE STATE OF OUR LAKES

I

t was the summer of 2014 and the panoramic view of Western Lake Seminole from my second story condo was breathtaking. Fourteen boats were moored at their docks, waiting for their owners to take them out for a day of fun.

Helen and I had experienced four years of living in this resort atmosphere and it seemed like paradise.

The following summer, the lake was covered with pungent algae that made breathing difficult; then the boats began to disappear.

By early summer of 2016, all boats were gone except one which belonged to a part-time resident who didn’t arrive in time to remove his boat. It is still marooned at his dock three years later, tangled in a mass of weeds and mired in muck.

I decided to organize a volunteer group with others who had their beautiful environment ripped from their lives. We named our organization Bring Back Our Florida Lakes; our mission is to find out what caused this sudden change in our environment. With the creation of our website, bringbackourfloridalakes.com, we received messages from residents in Ft. Myers, Sebring, Gainesville and all points in between. It turns out, this is a statewide problem.

We found that the weeds that covered our lakes so suddenly were a result of unusually heavy rains, hot weather, and a plethora of animal waste, fertilizer and weed clippings rushing through

the county storm sewer pipes into our lakes. The immediate treatment of our lakes was spraying chemicals, but as the weeds died and sank to the bottom, they decayed and turned to muck, which has accumulated and created a harmful environment for marine life.The depth of our lake was 6.5-feet deep in 2014.

Today it is 24-inches deep and propellers of any motorboat will become embedded in the bottom.

We studied courthouse records where we found official documents that state the code allows sewage and solid waste

to be discharged into our freshwater lakes. Pursuing that lead, we found that in 1972, the federal government permitted local governments to build “watersheds,” a surface drainage system designed to carry all surface water into our freshwater lakes.

To protect our lakes, Congress also passed the Clean Water Act which required testing on a continuing basis.

Local governments soon petitioned the federal government to exclude any lake that had good water quality. Most lakes qualified for the exclusion because the watersheds had not had time to pollute the water. To this day, we believe that testing is performed on very few lakes as evident by the massive weed growth.

There is some good news on the waterfront. A new $70,000 harvesting machine skims the surface for weeds and algae and can pull underwater weeds out by the roots. It is readily available and economically feasible.

Spraying is a thing of the past. State government agrees and is now listing the harvesting machine as a means to remedy the problem. Strawberry Quinoa Salad Jar

with Raspberry Balsamic Vinaigrette Ingredients: 1 c. of fresh arugula, chopped 1/2 c. of fresh strawberries, sliced 1/4 c. of quinoa 1/2 c. almond slices 1/2 c. chopped cooked chicken 1/4 c. feta cheese Dressing: 1 c. fresh raspberries 1 Tbsp. white sugar 2/3 c. balsamic vinegar ¼ c. olive oil 1 Tbsp. honey ½ tsp. salt Directions: Mix together the ingredients for the dressing and pour the dressing into the bottom of the jar. Layer arugula, strawberries, quinoa, almonds, chicken and feta cheese in the jar. Top with strawberries.

Close the jar and refrigerate until ready for use.

Then, pour the ingredients into a bowl and the dressing will cover the salad. Or, shake and eat it from the jar.

very year the Florida Strawberry Festival rolls out the berry-red carpet and welcomes visitors from around the world to enjoy ripe, juicy strawberries; topname entertainers, agriculture and livestock exhibits, horticulture, fine arts and crafts, youth programs and parades with colorful floats.

“The theme of this year’s festival is It’s a Hit,” enthuses festival president Paul Davis, “and I believe our guests will be impressed with the all-star lineup we have this year.”

Impressed? How about awestruck, Paul? There are enough gold-record veterans coming to the 2019 Florida Strawberry Festival to please discerning music fans of every imaginable ilk. Country, Rock, R & B, Christian—it’s all here for your toe-tapping pleasure.

The 2019 music headliner is 70-year-old Steven Tyler.

The indefatigable Energizer Bunny of the Rock World will be here for his inaugural performance on March 3rd to kick out the jams with the hard-driving Loving Mary Band. Nicknamed the Demon of Screamin’, Tyler’s distinctive high-octane voice has powered nearly two dozen Aerosmith singles into the Top 40, not to mention a bazillion albums and his soaring love ballad, I Don’t Want to Miss a Thing, created for the 1998 hit film Armageddon.

You say that April Love is more your speed? Then catch the legendary Pat Boone, at 84 years young still headlining the nostalgia circuit. Add in the Platters, the Drifters and Cornell Gunter’s Coasters, and you’ll be in Oldies Heaven this year.

Maybe you’d prefer country gold. In that case, you will want to enjoy legendary Willie Nelson, a still-spry 85 who was born a mere three years after the festival first began in 1930. As always, Memphis maestro Dennis Lee and his band will once again bring his repertoire to the Publix showcase tent.

And new this year, there’ll be nine groups competing in a Battle of the Bands rockoff, with the winner pocketing $10,000 and earning free recording-studio time.

Moving on to the food, the Florida Strawberry Festival has it going on: the smoked, the grilled, the deep-fried and the sugar-powdered. The main focus is naturally those little heart-shaped delights that inspired this celebration in the first place. Strawberries are the center of attention in pies, cheesecakes, cobblers, crepes, crème puffs, milkshakes, jams and shortcakes.

Try hamburgers, pizza or peanut butter infused with the lush fruit for a healthy and tasty twist.

The Belle City Midway offers 80 different rides as well as the SunnyBell Kiddie Korral for the younger attendees. And don’t forget the magic show, cow milking, pig racing, a dog show, circus acts and a halfdozen or so eating contests that usually involve—well, you know what.

The FSF festival began when members of the fledgling Plant City Lions Club developed the idea of an annual event to celebrate the rich strawberry harvest of Eastern Hillsborough County. Today more than 10,000 acres of strawberries are planted annually in the local area, and some 2,800 Hillsborough County farms produce fruit and vegetable crops with an annual value of over $360 million. About a half-million enthusiastic visitors come each year to experience one of the top festivals in the nation.

here are two principle categories of Florida trusts: “revocable” and “irrevocable.”

was involved in a fender bender the other night. No one was hurt, but part of my car is now a dented, ugly mess.

The accident wasn’t my fault. I was hit by a driver who neglected to obey a yield sign. I agree yield signs can be confusing. They’re certainly less demanding than stop signs. Maybe that’s the problem. Perhaps the word “yield” should be followed by an expletive.

The evening started with us dressing for one of those black-tie-optional affairs which I hate because it requires too many sartorial decisions. Dark suit or tuxedo? Suspenders or belt? Studs or buttons? Bow or necktie?

And then there were my husband’s choices. (Just kidding.)

I had showered, blow-dried, and was about to apply make-up when I noticed my naked fingernails. A special occasion surely required some color. I was applying a coat of NYC’s In a New York Minute nail polish to my right hand when my husband engaged in some throat-clearing. Therefore, I abandoned the little brush to render my expert opinion regarding his outfit.

We kissed the dog goodbye and drove off with me at the wheel. Within minutes the proverbial lightbulb lit my brain. With all the focus on his shoes and shirts, I had neglected my left hand.

“I have to go back,” I announced.

“Why? What’s wrong?”

“I didn’t polish the rest of my nails. I simply cannot show up unfinished!”

“No one will notice,” said he.

“Of course, they will,” I replied. “I can’t keep my hand in my pocket all evening. Besides, my dress doesn’t have pockets.”

“So, tell everyone it’s the latest style. Or, you’re becoming forgetful and that’s how you remember which hand is which,” he proposed.

After a few more useful suggestions, I agreed not to go home and continued driving. You know the rest.

But what if we could roll back the cameras and create an alternate ending? When informed about my naked fingernails, my husband recognized the seriousness of this grooming faux pas and insisted I turn around immediately and rectify the blunder.

Clearly, the minutes it would have taken to return home, apply a coat of quick-dry polish, get back in the car and resume the trip, would have avoided the man in the traffic circle who did not yield and said accident would have never occurred.

And that’s why, when the officer asked me who was to blame for the crash, I pointed to the man sitting next to me in the passenger seat, and said “he is.”

Fun, Fun, Fun Until Someone Took the Buick Away

I had recently passed my driver’s test, and, after a lot of pleading, talked my dad into letting me drive his new Buick on a date with the most popular girl in school to see A Summer Place. She said yes and I was on top of the world.

It was a hot summer evening in the 1950s and the windows were down. Consumed with her beauty, I wasn’t thinking and forgot to lock the car.

We had just sat down in the theater when she asked me to get her sweater. When I got to the parking lot in back, the car was GONE! My dad’s new Buick was GONE! Heart thumping, I went back inside to tell my date we couldn’t stay to see the movie; then I had to call my dad to tell him his new car had been STOLEN! He borrowed a car to pick us both up (really embarrassing) and to take my date home. Then, (woe is me), I was left to face a very upset father.

When I was stationed at the American Embassy in Saigon, a handsome and brave Air Force Captain by the name of Jim Pochurek invited me to fly on a low-flying defoliation mission over Viet Cong territory. I was adventurous (or stupid) enough to say yes. He bought me combat fatigues and we flew over what was considered to be a safe area.

During the flight, I asked what the sounds were. He calmly informed me we were receiving ground fire, and the plane was hit several times. Being a gentleman, Jim gave me his flak jacket to sit on for protection.

Back at the base, the Wing Commander asked if that woman he saw was a war correspondent. When he found out we were on a date, it was not only the first time a woman would fly on a combat mission with Operation Ranch Hand – it was the last. We dated for months and eventually married. Our union lasted 48 wonderful years until Jim died from cancer. I discovered that love can flourish anywhere, even if people are shooting at you. ~ Patricia Pochurek, Palm Harbor

Excited to have a date for my 16th birthday, I anticipated holding hands with Sam during a romantic Elvis Presley movie at the Tampa Theatre.

After I got dressed, I peeked out my bedroom window and gasped to see Sam holding a long white florist box as he came up to my front door. Thrilled that he was bringing me roses, I rushed to the living room where my family was already gathered to meet him. As I quickly untied the wide red satin ribbon and bow, I saw a lovely arrangement of long-stemmed greenery, white baby’s breath, and pungent-smelling green peppers, creatively shaped as blossoms! He later confessed his mother Mary had helped him prepare this practical joke. I was aghast but soon joined my family’s laughter; Sam and I left together for our “most memorable date.” Little did I know then that our love would unfold like those green-pepper buds.

Sam would become my prom date, college boyfriend, husband, and father to our two beautiful daughters. A few years after he came out as gay, we divorced. “Cold Pursuit” February Film

andwiched in between fired bullets, colorful explosions and jaw-dropping car crashes, a surprising streak of dark, irreverent humor pulses through the icy veins of Cold Pursuit.

And Blue Oyster Cult’s 1970s haunting masterpiece, Don’t Fear the Reaper, seems the perfect choice of an ironic theme song for this pulpish piece.

Nels Coxman (Liam Neeson) is a Colorado snow-plow operator who enjoys a peaceful family life with his loving spouse (Laura Dern), and he’s just been named Citizen of the Year by folks in the small ski town where he lives. At the awards ceremony, Coxman

ah-shucks his way through a brief speech by saying, “I’m just a guy who keeps a strip of civilization going.”

When he’s not plowing snow on lonely Colorado roads, Coxman can be found with his nose in one of the many crime stories he loves to read.

But the family’s unremarkable life is suddenly overturned with the death of their beloved son who has apparently overdosed on heroin.

“Kyle wasn’t a druggie,” Coxman mumbles when he and his wife identify their son’s body. The coroner responds blandly, “Sorry, but all the parents say that.”

Before long, the bereaved father morphs into a grim-faced, clenchedteeth vigilante who seeks to eliminate the drug cartel in his Rocky Mountain hometown. Viking, the heroin-dealing drug lord, is the focus of his wrath.

A gangster called Wingman offers Coxman a dire warning about Viking: “He likes hurting people.” Wingman then asks, “What makes you think you can kill a man?”

Without skipping a beat, Coxman calmly Cold Pursuit is Norwegian director responds, “I read it in a crime novel.”

Hans Petter Moland’s English-language Viking’s bad-guy associates (all remake of his 2014 film In Order of shadow-dwellers known only by Disappearance. At 51, two-time Academy Award nominee Laura Dern (Star Wars: The Last Jedi, Jurassic Park and Wild) is known for playing some of the most interesting and varied roles in Hollywood today. The main supporting player is young Tom Bateman (Murder on the Orient Express), who portrays the evil Liam Neeson is out for revenge in Cold Pursuit Viking.
