Mother’s Day is May 14th and on that day, we will be remembering and honoring our own special moms that taught us so much of what we know. But let’s not forget our other mothers, those memorable matriarchs of the TV screen who doled out advice, made us smile and expanded our worlds. Here, we give props to some of our favorites and what they taught us.

Lucille Ball will be remembered as the kooky, disaster-prone comedienne, Lucy Ricardo, from the ‘50s show, I Love Lucy. Whether she was stomping grapes or packing chocolates with her BFF Ethel Mertz, she kept us laughing and guessing how each crazy episode was going to end. We had to admire her passion, creativity and ambitious schemes to break into showbiz.

Her lesson? Humor can be found in nearly every situation, no matter how messy or embarrassing it may be.

Mary Tyler Moore was perhaps our favorite mom when she starred in the ‘60s comedy, The Dick Van Dyke Show. She was gorgeous, for sure, but she was also human. Always a bit nervous, she was unable to control her curiosity and had a flair for accidentally spilling the beans. But perhaps she is best known for defying the cookie-cutter image of housewives in pearls and skirts by wearing capri pants with flat shoes. The tight-fitting pants created such a shock wave in the beginning, the writers initially limited her to one pants scene per episode.

Her lesson? Women can dress comfortably and still look great.

Donna Reed played the wholesome, pretty mother in The Donna Reed Show (1958 to 1966). Married to a handsome pediatrician, she strutted around the house in perfectly coiffed hair, pearls, heels, a dress and lacy frocks. And she was always ready to handle the problems of the day whether they were measles, poor report cards, teen-age dating or white lies. But alas, all was not really perfect at all. Her first two (real world) marriages ended in divorce.

Her lesson? Aim for perfection but realize that life is never perfect.

Jean Stapleton was best known for her award-winning role as Edith Bunker in the ‘70s hit, All in the Family. The kind-hearted “dingbat” was the perfect foil to husband Archie, who was outspoken, testy and bigoted. She was submissive – up to a point – and baffled about almost everything.

But as the show progressed she became a symbol of emerging feminism, and audiences loved her even more.

Her lesson? Be sweet, understanding and noble. And if you have to sing, sing with gusto, even if you sing off-key.

Shirley Jones oozed flower power in the ‘70s show, The Partridge Family. She was by far the coolest of moms, touring the country in a psychedelic school bus and acting as lead vocalist for her family of sugar-pop musicians.

Phylicia Rashad played the role of Clair Huxtable in The Cosby Show, which ran from 1984 to 1992. She was a loving mom and attorney who worked to instill good moral values in her brood.

She could evoke her authority with just the lift of an eyebrow, a roll of the eyes, or a smirk, but could also be silly and lovable too.

Her lesson? Being a mother and being cool are not mutually exclusive.

Her lesson? Laugh. Love. Have a family. Have an interesting career.

And don’t give into peer pressure.

The Merry Month of May

ow. Here we are in the third and last month of spring already. Seems like we just celebrated New Year’s. But as the legendary Andy Rooney of 60 Minutes said, “I’ve learned that life is like a roll of toilet paper. The closer it gets to the end, the faster it goes.”

While none of us know how big our roll is or how long it will last, the fact is we all have a limited number of days ahead. But let’s not focus on the end of the roll, let’s direct our attention to the soft, white, paper that unfurls from the spool.

May is Older Americans Month, a celebration of the lives of seniors, established by President John F. Kennedy in 1963. Back then, about a third of older Americans lived in poverty and few programs were available to meet their needs.

Now, every May, the government’s Administration for Community Living leads the celebration and has designated this year’s theme as “Age Out Loud.” It’s a shout out, a call for seniors to make their thoughts and needs and talents known.

As a whole, we older folks are working longer, techno-literate, striving for wellness, focused on independence, and advocating for causes we hold dear to our hearts. We have more money too, with Baby Boomers controlling 70 percent of U.S. Disposable Income.

We are living longer and with improved quality of life due to advances in medicine, enhanced vision and dental care, a decline in smoking, better diets and more active lifestyles. And we look younger than our parents did at this age thanks to all of the above and, yes, advances in cosmetic surgery.

In this issue we celebrate Older Americans Month with a list of inspirational people who kept dreaming, achieving and creating in unexpected ways – even in their 9th decade of life. Take Teiichi Igarashi of Japan for example. At age 99, he climbed 12,395 feet to the top of Mount Fuji. So whether it’s that novel you want to complete, the recital in Carnegie Hall you want to perform, or the parachute jump you want to make, set your goal and get crackin’.

We hope you’ll enjoy our Mother’s Day tribute which remembers our “other mothers” -- those women on TV who helped raise us when Mom was busy. It’s a nostalgic trip back to the days when TV shows ran on three networks. You didn’t even need a remote, just a pair of rabbit ears and maybe a bit of foil.

Also for Mother’s Day, our columnist Iris Ruth Pastor, the mother of five adult sons, shares a wistful look back to her carpooling days. How many of you miss those trips with the kids in the car and all the wonderful eavesdropping opportunities you had back then?

This issue includes some recipes that should come in handy for Cinco de Mayo, Mother’s Day and Memorial Day. There’s a preview of a military museum, some travel stories, and on the lighter side, some children’s letters to God. We’ve added a new feature too, the joke of the month.

Finally we pay a visit to Mar-a-Lago back when socialite and owner of General Foods, Marjorie Merriweather Post, owned the 120-room Palm Beach mansion. She donated it to the U.S. government in 1973 in the hopes that it would become a “winter White House.” Now, in a strange twist of fate, that has come true.

irst Lady Mrs. Lyndon Johnson called it a “beautiful never-never land.” Rose Kennedy, mother of President John F. Kennedy, attended square dances there.

A Palm Beach Post columnist wrote, “You go to Mrs. Post’s to dance or stay home.”

These were impressions of Mar-a-Lago, a sprawling estate in Palm Beach. Its name in Spanish means land between the sea and lake but it really lies between the Atlantic Ocean and the Florida Intracoastal Waterway. In 1967, it was called one of America’s most elaborate 20th century mansions and was certainly the center of Palm Beach’s social scene.

Owner Marjorie Merriweather Post was a legend herself. Born in 1887, she came to own the growing Postum Cereal Company in the late ‘20s after her father, Charles William (C.W.) Post, died.

Within 15 years, she had transformed that business into the General Foods Corporation and she became one of the wealthiest Marjorie Merriweather Post in 1929, wearing a gown in which she was women in the United received at Buckingham Palace.

In addition to Mar-a-Lago, which was completed in 1927, she owned two other estates, married four times, and owned couture jewelry collections that included designs by Cartier, Van Cleef and Arpels, and Harry Winston. She was also a philanthropist and amassed an extraordinary collection of Russian Imperial Art. When it was built, Mar-a-Lago brought together Old World features that include Spanish, Portuguese, Italian, Moorish, French and English influences. Mara-Lago was mainly used by Post for entertaining during the high season -- from early January to the end of Feb-

ruary. The dining room had simulated marble columns, frescoes, Spanish chandeliers and Venetian chairs. It took four men to put in one section of the dining room table because the sections weighed 300 pounds each for a total of 6.5 tons.

After rain repeatedly cancelled dancing on the patio, she added a 200-person pavilion in 1962 that also held 40 tables for playing bridge. There was a fallout shelter in the basement, and she eventually built an enclosure of glass for dining outside.

She employed about 75 staff members -- maids, valets, kitchen staff, chauffeurs, secretaries, laundresses and watchmen.

Guests -- senators, ambassadors, generals, authors, artists, movie stars and family members -- were flown in by Post’s private plane. One grandchild recalled her favorite memory, “Grandmother always had these wonderful comforters that were satin on one side and velvet on the other, so you’d wrap yourself in them and Marjorie Merriweather Post wore this gown with Cartier jewels pictured in the parade around pretend- portrait behind her. Guests were particularly impressed that the valets repacked their bags for them with everything cleaned and in tissue paper so nothing was wrinkled. One wrote, “On a visit to Mrs. Post, you came back looking better than you arrived.”

Post was superstitious. She would not ever seat a table of thirteen, cocktails began at 7:00, and dinner

Dining Room was scheduled for 7:30. She did not wear opals. She never put her hat on the bed or tolerated open umbrellas in the house.

The usual number of guests for dinner and dancing was 75. She loved to tango and square dance and had many pairs of shoes colored to match her square dancing outfits.

When Post grew ill, she bequeathed the mansion in her will to the U.S. government to be used as the winter White House. She died in 1973 and is buried at her Washington D.C. home of Hillwood, now a museum complete with extensive formal gardens, a greenhouse, and a pet cemetery. “Marjorie Post brought an incredible acumen for organization and impeccable taste to each of the grand estates she called home,” explains Hillwood’s Executive Director Kate Market.

In 1980, the government declared Mar-a-Lago a National Historic Landmark. The following year, it returned the estate to the Post Foundation citing the high maintenance costs.

Donald Trump first offered $28 million for the estate but to no avail. He persisted and following the real estate market slump, he obtained Mar-a-Lago for $5 million in 1985 and paid an additional $3 million for the antiques and furniture. Trump turned it into a private club in 1995 and built a 20,000-square-foot ballroom with $7 million in gold leaf gilding. Recently, he had a helicopter landing pad erected on the western lawn, big enough to accommodate Marine One. Since being sworn into office, Trump refers to the estate as his Southern White House and uses it as a Camp Davidstyle retreat.

Now Post got her wish—Mar-a-Lago is truly America’s second White House.

Here’s the dish on radishes

by Teri Pizza he word, radish, comes from the Latin word, radix, meaning “to root.” The word “radical” also comes from the Latin “root,” as in radicals that want to change the root of the political system. Beware those radish radicals, they can get hot under the collar (so to speak). Perhaps that’s because radishes belong to the mustard family and contain glucosinolates—the stuff that brings the hot out in horseradish and wasabi.

The Egyptian and Greek cultures so idolized radishes they made gold replicas of them. Today these roots are celebrated in Oaxaca, Mexico at their Radish Festival.

The little red pops of crispiness are small but mighty. The Save Our Bones Foundation considers the nutritional power packed into these vegetables super impressive because they’re full of vitamin C, K, B, sulfur, iron and iodine yet contain only 19 calories per half cup and 2grams of sugar.

But wait, there’s more.

At the risk of sounding like an old-timey, snake-oil salesman, the radish has been known, because of its vitamin C anti-inflammatory properties, to have a positive effect on asthma symptoms. It’s also been suggested as an alternative medicine in the treatment of whooping cough, gastric discomfort, gallbladder problems, arthritis, gallstones and even kidney stones!

Here’s how to enjoy your radishes: Selection -- Whatever color you choose (red, black, white or gold) they should be unblemished and have brightcolored skin. Select those that are firm and compact in texture with green, healthy leaves. (Smaller ones are usually tastier.)

Storage -- Separate roots and leaves and store separately in plastic bags in a refrigerator. (Add a paper towel to the bag with leaves).

Preparation -- When ready to eat, soak leaves in a cold-vinegar bath to remove pesticide residue; rinse and pat dry. Sauté them with salt and pepper; use raw as a garnish; or mix uncooked leaves in a salad.

Clean roots just before using in a vinegar bath; rinse and pat dry. Slice to desired thickness. If using in a salad or at a salad buffet, soak them in ice water for an hour to make them extra crunchy.

How to categorize your estate assets.

ou may know that a probate is likely to occur whenever an individual passes away with assets titled in his or her name. You may also know that placing assets in a living trust may be the best way to avoid the probate process. However, without knowing more about what does and does not constitute a probate asset, your estate may end up in probate despite your Trust or best intentions.

Assets titled in the name of the deceased person alone and which do not list a beneficiary are typically probate assets.

Assets that pass by a beneficiary designation, such as a life insurance policy or retirement account, are typically not subject to probate and are considered a non-probate asset. Non-probate assets are still subject to the administration of the estate which includes the payment of debts and the satisfaction of creditors.

The probate court supervises the disbursement of the probate assets, and is specialized and greatly detailed within state law. If there are probate assets in more than one state, an ancillary administration may be needed in those states.

A few more “tid bits” about assets are: Property that has no title (personal property) should be designated in a memorandum that is referenced in a will or trust. Property held by a married couple is generally considered to belong to the marriage rather than to the husband or the wife individually and may be distributed without at probate by right of survivorship.

The key is to understand the nature of your assets so there are no surprises down the road.

Recipe Corner • by Lauren HiLton Here’s an easy recipe created by Alexandra Steele, 9, who has expanded her cooking talents to include the artistic, nutritious creation of salads.

“Alexandra’s salad was created the day that her grandmother gave her a fresh watermelon,” said her mother Brianna. “It’s rich in nutrients and contains fruits, vegetables, grains, protein, and dairy. Watermelon is in season and one of the most refreshing fruits around, so this is an ideal recipe for Mother’s Day and Memorial Day picnics.

Alexandra’s Refreshing Watermelon Salad Makes: 4 Servings Ingredients: 1 cup fresh spring greens 1 cup fresh cilantro 1 cup fresh watermelon, cubed 1/2 cup red grapes, halved 1/4 cup walnuts, chopped 1/4 cup Feta cheese 4 whole-grain dinner rolls 2 teaspoons butter Directions: • In a large salad bowl, mix all ingredients together. Arrange the salad mixture on a platter and serve with whole-grain dinner rolls spread with grass-fed butter, if possible.

Seasoned chunks of cod topped with fresh diced tomatoes, shredded cabbage, a squeeze of lime, and a dollop of cilantro-infused sour cream are all served on top of a warm corn tortilla. These fish tacos are the perfect combination of simplicity and excitement; perfect for Cinco de Mayo or anytime.

Simple Fish Tacos

Makes: 6 Servings Ingredients: 1/2 cup sour cream 1/4 cup mayonnaise 1/2 cup fresh cilantro, chopped 1/2 package taco seasoning, divided 1 tablespoon olive oil 2 tablespoons lemon juice 1 pound cod or white fish fillets, cut into 1-inch pieces 2 cups red and green cabbage, shredded 2 cups tomato, diced 12 corn tortillas, 6-inch, warmed lime wedges, for serving Directions: • Combine sour cream, mayonnaise, cilantro, and 2 Tbsp seasoning mix.

• In a medium bowl, combine cod, vegetable oil, lemon juice, and remaining seasoning mix; pour into large skillet. Cook stirring constantly, over medium-high heat for 4-5 minutes or until cod flakes easily when tested with a fork.

• Fill warm tortillas with fish mixture.

• Top with cabbage, tomato, sour cream mixture, lime wedges, and taco sauce.

When Is the Best Time to Start Receiving Social Security Benefits?

njoying a comfortable retirement is everyone’s dream. For over 80 years, Social Security has been helping people realize those dreams, assisting people through life’s journey with a variety of benefits. It’s up to you as to when you can start retirement benefits. You could start them a little earlier or wait until your “full retirement age.” There are benefits to either decision, pun intended.

Full retirement age refers to the age when a person can receive their Social Security benefits without any reduction, even if they are still working part or full time. In other words, you don’t actually need to stop working to get your full benefits.

For people who attain age 62 in 2017 (i.e., those born between January 2, 1955 and January 1, 1956), full retirement age is 66 and two months. Full retirement age was age 65 for many years. However, due to a law passed by Congress in 1983, it has been gradually increasing,

beginning with people born in 1938 or later, until it reaches 67 for people born after 1959.

You can start receiving Social Security benefits as early as age 62 or any time after that. The longer you wait, the higher your monthly benefit will be, although it stops increasing at age 70. Your monthly benefits will be reduced permanently if you start them any time before your full retirement age. For example, if you start receiving benefits in 2017 at age 62, your monthly benefit amount will be reduced permanently by about 26 percent.

On the other hand, if you wait to start receiving your benefits until after your full retirement age, then your monthly benefit will be higher. The amount of this increase is two-thirds of one percent for each month –– or eight

percent for each year –– that you delay receiving them until you reach age 70.

The choices you make may affect any benefit your spouse or children can receive on your record, too. If you receive benefits early, it may reduce their potential benefit, as well as yours.

You need to be as informed as possible when making any decision about receiving Social Security benefits.

Motherhood & America’s First Mission

ot that one needs an excuse for a trip to St. Augustine, but with the spirit of Mother’s Day and motherhood in mind,

Shrine of Our Lady of La Leche

a May visit to the Shrine of Our Lady of La Leche and Mission Nombre de Dios in America’s Oldest City could be in order.

Mission Nombre de Dios (the Mission of God’s Holy Name) sits on the west side of Matanzas B a y, j u s t n o r t h of downtown. Its signature landmark is a stainless steel Our Lady of La Leche 204-foot cross. The statue grounds date back to 1565, some fiftyPhotos by Scott Smith five years before the pilgrims founded Plymouth Rock, when Pedro Menendez de Aviles, the Admiral of Philip II’s Spanish fleet, landed here and began America’s first Mission.

From the cross follow the path to a small, ivy-covered, Spanish-style chapel where the Shrine of Our Lady of La Leche (our

nursing mother) is housed. The centerpiece is a statue of the Blessed Virgin Mary breastfeeding the infant Jesus. This image dates back to Spain in the early 1600s and Our Lady of La Leche is considered the patroness of mothers and mothers-tobe. The shrine is where thousands have asked and given thanks for a safe, happy delivery and healthy children as well as other maternal matters -- or to just simply pray. The original chapel was built in 1615

by Spanish settlers and is the first shrine dedicated to the Blessed Virgin Mary in the United States. It was destroyed during the British siege of St. Augustine in 1728.

In 1875 it was rebuilt only to be ruined by a hurricane. The present chapel was reconstructed in 1915 in the same coquina shell-stone style as the original.

The grounds are great place to step back, not only in time, but away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life to enjoy some peace and serenity. Be mindful that the mission and shrine are operated by the Roman Catholic Diocese of St. Augustine and visitors are asked to be respectful of the setting’s prayerful atmosphere. Catholic masses are celebrated each day at noon along with the Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament from 1 to 3 p.m. Also be aware that Mother’s Day might be especially busy if you are not into crowds.

In addition to the shrine, Mission Nombre de Dios also features archeological excavations, a historical cemetery, a museum and gift shop, and the Prince of Peace Church.

While a captive, he was mistakenly reported killed in action in the Army Times.

Though he had sustained numerous injuries and was given very little food, Chirichigno’s story has a happy ending with his release from capture. His exceptional bravery gave his comrades sufficient time to escape the immediate enemy threat and inflicted vast damage on the enemy.

There is an array of Civil War, U.S. and foreign uniforms to admire. Of particular interest is the myriad of military recruiting posters. Showcases exhibit weaponry, armament, and souvenirs that soldiers brought home.

Thus, what started out as collection in a couple of closets in an American Legion and a VFW Post has grown into a mighty museum, thanks to the Charlotte County Veterans’ Council and the lease negotiated with Fishermen’s Village.

Plans are under way to erect a new

building at the Punta Gorda Airport, site of the annual Florida International Air Show, where donated military aircraft and vehicles can also be displayed. Its name will be the Military Heritage and Aviation Museum. The current museum will remain and continue its mission to promote an understanding and respect for the rich military heritage of the U.S. and to remind us all that “freedom is not free.”

ifestyles After 50 magazine held one of our very popular Fun Fests, April 12, at the Kapok Special Events Center and Gardens in Clearwater. The venue is known for its famous kapok tree, distinctive Old World character, numerous fountains and statues, and elegant chandelier-laden rooms.

by L.O.T.P (Life of the Party) which played an array of rockin’ cover songs.

They had the crowd singing, dancing and clapping along. Guests enjoyed a huge Easter Egg Hunt, visiting with a wide array of vendors, an Easter bonnet contest and parade, bingo, health screenings, and a lunch special.

Arthritis awareness – might those ‘aches and pains’ be osteoarthritis?

M

ay is National Arthritis Awareness Month, making spring the perfect time to learn more about the uncomfortable condition affecting approximately one in five American adults. Given its prevalence, ‘arthritis’ is a term many are familiar with, yet surprisingly, not so many truly understand. ‘Arthritis’ is actually an informal term used to cover more than 100 different types of joint pain or joint disease and related conditions. The most common of these is osteoarthritis which, according to the Arthritis Foundation, affects approximately 17 million people in the United States.

About osteoarthritis Osteoarthritis is also known as degenerative arthritis, which results from the basic ‘wear and tear’ the cartilages in our joints endure over time. Cartilage is the slippery tissue covering the ends of bones within a joint. Healthy cartilage allows bones to slide over one another, and helps to absorb shock from movement.

As we age though, and with ongoing activity, cartilage wears away, eventually leaving bone to rub on bone. This can result in pain, swelling, stiffness and a limited range of movement.

Osteoarthritis symptoms Joint pain, swelling, stiffness, decreased range of motion, a crunching feeling or the sound of bone rubbing on bone, are all common signs of osteoarthritis. Symptoms may come and go, and discomfort levels can vary from mild, to moderate, to severe. Pain or stiffness can often remain unchanged for years, or can increase with intensity over time. Severe arthritis can also lead to chronic pain, and limit the ability to complete everyday activities such as walking or climbing stairs. Factors contributing to the onset of osteoarthritis include getting older, carrying excess body weight, joint injuries or stresses placed on the joints from playing sports or performing certain jobs.

Managing osteoarthritis Mild and moderate joint symptoms can often be managed with non-surgical therapies such as: balancing activity with rest, using hot and cold packs, getting regular physical activity, maintaining a healthy weight, strengthening muscles around the joint for added support, using assistive devices like canes or walkers, avoiding excessive repetitive movements, and taking pain relievers or anti-inflammatory medications. If pain is severe, however, and lifestyle changes (such as weight management, maintaining a healthy diet and avoiding high impact activities) have not helped managed the arthritis, surgery may be needed to replace the affected joint.

When to consult a doctor Once joint pain persists for more than a few weeks, it’s time to consult an orthopedic specialist. While osteoarthritis cannot be cured, with treatment, pain can be relieved and range of motion restored. Opioid Addictions After Surgery Some patients face much higher risk of becoming dependent on powerful painkillers

(HealthDay News) -- Some surgery patients prescribed opioids for postoperative pain may face a high risk for developing a long-term opioid addiction, new research warns.

The analysis tracked a half-year of opioid use among more than 36,000 surgery patients. None had taken opioids before their surgical procedure.

“We found that 5 to 6 percent of patients not using opioids prior to surgery continued to fill prescriptions for opioids long after what would be considered normal surgical recovery,” said study author Dr. Chad Brummett, director of the division of pain research at the University of Michigan Medical School.

“Moreover, the rates of new chronic use did not differ between patients having major and minor surgeries, suggesting that patients continue to use these pain medications for something other than simply pain from surgery,” he added.

The risk was highest among smokers; patients who had struggled with alcohol and/or drugs in the past; those previously diagnosed with depression or anxiety; and those with a history of chronic pain, the findings showed.

In many cases, the pain control drug of choice is an opioid medication such as Vicodin or Oxycontin. The U.S is in the grip of an opioid painkiller epidemic, with more than 10 million people using prescription opioids for non-medical reasons in 2014, according to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.

One recent study showed that opioid dependence can take hold in as little as five days.

Many predict that 9 10 interest rates will soon be rising from an 14 15 extended period of being at historically 18 low levels, and that this will hurt fixed income investments. Why is a rising interest rate environment bad for bonds?

23 To explain the relationship between 29 30 31 32 33 changes in interest rates and bond prices, 37 38 let’s use an example. Assume you 41 42 purchased a five-year, $10,000 bond at 46 face value that was paying a 7 percent coupon rate.

Now suppose interest rates 50 51 fall, thereby causing newly issued bonds 54 55 similar to the one you bought to offer 61 62 63 64 65 only a 6 percent coupon rate. If you 67 were looking to sell your 7 percent bond before70 it matures, since it is now more attractive73than the 6 percent bonds that reflect current yields, you will be able to get more than par value. In fact, you will be able to sell your 7 percent bond at $10,421, a nice premium to the par value that you paid. Buying your 7 percent bond at $10,421 nets an investor the identical return to maturity that would be achieved by buying the 6 percent bond for $10,000.

On the other hand, suppose interest rates rise, thereby causing bonds similar to yours to offer an 8 percent coupon rate. If you were looking to sell your 6

7 percent bond, since it is no longer as attractive as newly issued bonds, you would need to discount the price of your bond to the point where the buyer would achieve the same total return being offered by the bond paying 8 percent. It turns out that this price where the return is equivalent is $9,601, approximately a 4 percent discount to the par value that you paid.

In a very general sense, the longer a bond has until maturity, the more its price is affected by a change in interest rates. Other factors, such as the bond’s credit quality, can also be a factor.

It is important to note that if a bond is held to maturity, as long as the issuer— whether it is a corporation, government, or municipality—is solvent, you will receive your original $10,000 back (in addition to the $700 in interest payments that you received each year).
