One success story After seeing the devastation left

by Hurricane Wilma in 2005, Kristen Nevils and her husband, Michael, a service-disabled veteran, wanted to build a business to help provide emergency, healthcare, safety and industrial products to organizations. They worked with SBDC in conjunction with the Veterans Administration to get their business running. Over the past three years, they’ve increased their total gross from $10,000 to more than $7 million,

and Michael Nevils is writing a book to inform other veterans on how to start and build a successful business.

Senior Entrepreneurs—Leaving Legacies, Pursuing Dreams • Hone your skills. Take the knowledge you’ve amassed over a lifetime in the workplace and put it to work for you. You could become a consultant in your field or apply those skills to a new industry; just make sure to keep them updated. Look for free courses online from sites like the Open University on iTunesU (open.edu/itunes), Coursera (coursera.org) or edX (edx.org).

ake the risk and have fun. Unlike during my younger years when I wanted to prove myself and was driven to ‘be successful,’ this time around it’s about leaving a legacy and pursuing dreams. It’s about incorporating my business and retirement goals with my personal values.”

In a conversation with AARP, senior entrepreneur Barbara Hyatte Boustead, 61, gave this advice to others her age who were thinking about starting their own business. Boustead, a Wisconsin resident who had 37 years of experience as a licensed clinical social worker, recognized a need for money management services for seniors and veterans and founded her company, Mary’s Daughter, to provide this assistance. (marysdaughterllc.com) Boustead is one among a growing number of senior entrepreneurs. More than five million Americans age 55 or older run their own businesses or are otherwise self-employed, according to the Small Business Administration. Whether they were dissatisfied with their jobs; were let go prematurely; had an idea for a business or realized that they would need to extend their working years to fund retirement, more seniors and boomers across the country are working for themselves.

Too young to retire; too old to hire?

It’s no secret: if you’re 55 or older, the workplace can be an unforgiving environment. Qualified mature workers are being laid off at a rate that has more than doubled since 2007, according to the Urban Institute, and a lot of it has to do with a slowly recovering job market, age discrimination and the availability of a younger workforce that will work for much less, albeit with less experience.

Mature workers make up 14.2 percent of the unemployed population in the U.S., and the average senior spends 11 months searching for work after becoming unemployed, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

Those that do reenter the workforce can expect, on average, to earn 15 percent less on their new job than their old one. If you’re 62 or older, it jumps to 21 percent.

Many are forced to take part time work to get by when full time jobs are scarce.

So what’s a senior to do? For some, what may seem like a list of harsh truths can be an opportunity in disguise—a chance for reinvention.

“They’re more educated, they have higher income and wealth, they are more willing to take on risks, they’ve had lots of on-the-job training and lots of workforce experience,” University of South California economist Julie Zissimopoulos said about late-bloomer entrepreneurs in an interview with PBS. “They can bring all of this into the development of a new business or service.”

How do I become an entrepreneur?

• Have a passion. Start with some-

thing you’ve always wanted to do, or a skill that comes naturally to you.

Years after retiring from the construction industry, 71-year-old Don Vannice took a stand-up comedy class at McCurdy’s Comedy Club in Sarasota and discovered a talent for humor. He came up with an idea to create a comedy dinner show and laugh therapy seminar when he saw how

laughter benefited his aging father-inlaw. Vannice went on to found The Show Stopperz Comedy Connection, LLC in Orlando to bring laughter therapy to people of all ages (stopperzcomedy.com).

Maxine Clark, 64, used some of her retirement savings to start Build-A-Bear after realizing there was a market for customized bears. The company now has over 400 stores all over the world and donates toys to children in need (buildabear.com).

An idea doesn’t have to be groundbreaking to make a good business, but it should fill a need or a niche to be successful.

• Have a plan. A lot goes into running a business, from getting a license, insurance and a place to work to hiring employees or shipping goods. Small business resource sites like SCORE.org can offer counseling on how to build and manage your company.

• Look for funding. Don’t utilize all of your retirement savings—find ways to supplement startup income with small loans, grants, state economic development programs, investors or crowdfunding sites like Kickstarter.com. Cut down on office space costs by setting up online stores through sites like Etsy and eBay. Check out the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA.gov) for a list of options for funding small businesses.

Networking, as well as occasionally volunteering your services, can help you attract new clients and projects.

A web presence is also a necessity for businesses these days, and sites like Google’s Get Your Business Online (gybo.com), wordpress.com, wix.com and weebly.com can help you build and host your own site at relatively low cost.

Utilizing social media sites like Twitter and Facebook can also help you build a following by word of mouth.

• Find support or a mentor. Running

your own business can mean long hours, hard work, risks and a lot of trial and error.

Don’t get discouraged! Surround yourself with family, friends and other people who want to see you succeed.

Joining an online community like Encore.org or Senior Entrepreneurship Works (seniorentrepreneurshipworks.org) can put you in touch with a support structure of other 50+ entrepreneurs and allow you to learn from their experience.

Overcoming Age Discrimination

es, age discrimination does exist in job searches. Anyone over the age of 50 wishes it wasn’t a fact, but sadly it is, reveals career counselor Robin Ryan, author of Over 40 & You’re Hired.

A manager told Ryan in confidence that the president of their billion-dollar organization had issued a verbal decree saying “We aren’t hiring anyone over 40 because they are too old to get the job done.”

“Age discrimination has many stereotypes. Whether you are employed and looking to make a move, or in career transition, handling these age biases effectively is essential if you are looking for a new position,” says Ryan, a leading career expert.

After surveying hundreds of decision makers, here are a few of the strategies and solutions that Ryan covers in her book:

Stereotype: Declining Productivity

Decision makers note that they have witnessed a decrease in productivity with older workers. Some said a significant decrease. They want someone who can contribute now, not someone who did a lot ten years ago.

Ryan’s Solution: Producing recent results. Show how you have recently applied yourself and been able to get the job done. You will need to stress your recent accomplishments in your resume and during the interview.

Stereotype: Being Overqualified

Employers worry about this issue a lot.

Many job seekers say they are willing to start lower and work their way up, but this seems like an act of desperation and an out-of-touch, dated response to the hiring managers who hear it.

Additionally, the overqualified person is often believed to want the hiring manager’s job, and that was a major concern. Another worry is that the candidate sees the job as temporary until he or she can find a better position.

Ryan’s Solution: The simplest and wisest solution is to look harder for positions you are qualified for. There may be fewer opportunities, so spend your time putting maximum effort into locating positions that fit your level of expertise and experience. Then target your resume and cover letter to meet their specific needs. Be open to moving—it is often essential to get a high paying job.

Look at your skill set as transferable to different fields. You can redeploy skills you already have in a new industry rather than retraining entirely new skills.

Stereotype: You look old

A CEO from a major U.S. company noted, “There is a presumption that if your look is out-of-date, your information and skills are also out-of-date.” Most over-40 job hunters don’t realize how off-putting their appearance can be. On the other hand, sometimes people forget to act their age. They try too hard to look trendy, young and hip, and it backfires.

A top-level HR VP said, “We see too many people who are over 40 showing up at an interview and actually losing the job ten seconds into the interview. They have lost their enthusiasm for life, let alone the job, and when they walk through the door they look defeated and burned out.”

Ryan’s Solution: Reinvention is the answer. This may simply mean buying a more contemporary suit and getting a new hairstyle in order to update your professional appearance and throw off this stereotype. Men need to be cleanshaven, and dying your hair is often a good idea for men and women.

Burnout is a different story. This needs some serious remedies. Time off, vacations, daily exercise—maybe even counseling is necessary to get you out of this defeated mode.

Your attitude—positive and encouraging or negative, angry and grumpy—has a big impact on those around you.

Many employers commented that a bad attitude was often the reason they skipped over hiring someone over 40.

Therefore, you must show up enthused, vibrant and excited.

Hiring managers did point out several positive characteristics of mature workers, stated Ryan, including: • Having a superior work ethic • Being loyal to their employers • Acting as mentors to others • Offering superior customer service • Being dependable—showing up every day ready to work (their kids are typically older or grown, thus they can work flexible hours).

1. Keep your resume short: Include only the most recent 15 to 20 years of

employment and summarize prior work in a single paragraph without dates or durations. Highlight skills and capabilities rather than years in the workplace.

While age discrimination can be challenging to prove, there are steps you can take to defend yourself.

Beacon of Hope—Man Amazes Doctors with Success from Stem Cell Treatments David Ebner, Staff Writer

ne year ago, Gary O. was diagnosed with idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF), a deadly lung disease with no known cure. Age and Alcohol Sensitivity

id you know that as people age, they may become more sensitive to alcohol’s effects? Before you reach for that New Year’s toast, it might be worth considering how your response to alcohol has changed over time.

We metabolize alcohol more slowly than younger people: So, alcohol stays in our body longer. Also, the amount of water in the body decreases with age.

As a result, older adults have a higher percentage of alcohol in their blood than younger people after drinking the same amount of alcohol.

Aging lowers the body’s tolerance for alcohol as well. This means that older adults can experience the effects of intoxication, such as slurred speech and lack of coordination, more readily than when we were younger. An older person can develop problems with alcohol even though their drinking habits have not changed.

Heavy drinking over time can damage the liver, the heart, and the brain. It can increase the risk of developing certain cancers and immune system disorders as well as damage muscles and bone.

Drinking too much alcohol can also make some health conditions, like

diabetes, high blood pressure, congestive heart failure, liver and memory problems, worse. It can also aggravate mood disorders such as depression and anxiety.

Treating Osteoarthritis of the Hip with Total Hip Replacement Surgery Dr. John C. Kagan, M.D.

O

steoarthritis, also known as “wearand-tear” arthritis, is a common condition. More than 28 million people in the United States were estimated to have osteoarthritis in 2011. Osteoarthritis occurs most often in weight-bearing joints, including the hip. It causes stiffness and pain and can make everyday activities difficult to manage.

Before considering surgery, your doctor will consider lifestyle modifications, such as losing weight and avoiding highimpact activities; physical therapy, to increase flexibility and range of motion; assistive devices such as canes or walkers; and pain medications. However, if the osteoarthritis is debilitating and not relieved with nonsurgical treatments, total hip replacement is one surgical option to treat osteoarthritis.

Hip replacement surgery removes the damaged bone and soft tissue of the hip and replaces it with a metal stem and socket, along with a plastic liner to replace the damaged cartilage between them. Modern, minimally invasive hip replacements avoid cutting into the tissue around the hip, and a total hip replacement can be completed with one or two small incisions. This leads to reduced pain and a quicker recovery from the surgery.

The single-incision surgery usually requires a 3- to 6-inch incision, depending on the size of the patient and the complexity of the surgery. The incision is made on the outside of the hip, and the muscles and tendons are detached from the hip and then repaired, which leads to faster healing and minimizes the risk of hip dislocation.

In a two-incision surgery, the surgeon makes a 2- to 3-inch incision of the groin to insert the socket, and a 1- to 2-inch incision over the buttock to insert the femoral stem. The complexity of this surgery often means the surgeon will take x-rays to ensure correct guidance.

Two-incision surgery often is a longer procedure than one-incision surgery.

Minimally invasive surgery leads to less damage to the muscles and soft tissues surrounding the hip, which can make recovery quicker than in traditional surgery. Depending on your overall health and the complexity of the surgery, you can expect to stay in the hospital for one to four days following the surgery. But regardless of the type of surgery performed for total hip

t’s the start of a brand new year, and time to take charge of your health.

The 21st century is home to a wide variety of weight loss solutions. While some are little more than fads, others can help you achieve the look and level of health that you desire. From wristworn gadgets to smartphone apps to prescriptions to pre-packaged meals, it’s quite possible that there has never been a better time to battle the bulge.

Even with all the diets and plans out there, it can be hard to take steps toward being healthier. Sometimes, knowing the right moves to make and having the willpower to make them aren’t enough.

In the case of most of us, the addition of accountability can be tremendously helpful in keeping us on track. Here are a few ways you can maintain accountability and stay focused on your goals.

1. Measure Your Success

For some of us, the word “scale” conjures a mixed bag of emotions—some of those being less than positive! But making friends with your scale can help paint an accurate picture of the effects of your weight-loss efforts. Use your scale as a reference point in checking the effects of the work you’re putting in.

While slight daily fluctuations are normal for all of us, you’ll be able to actively keep up with your weight-loss journey.

Likewise, a measuring tape can be a huge help to those who are supplementing diets with strength-building exercise.

Muscle takes up far less volume then fat does. So while you’re working out, if you’re not seeing drastic results on the scale, your tape measure can help show you where weight, and inches, are dropping.

2. Write It Down

Most nutritionists agree that keeping a food diary or daily health journal can be an excellent tool in achieving weight loss.

While the task may sound taxing, it’s probably easier than you think. Make a list of the foods you’re eating (or the calories you’re taking in) and make notes about your energy levels as they move up and down throughout the day.

If this sounds like too much, make yourself some daily food goals and mark a little check mark in the top corner of your calendar on the days in which you hit your goals. Another great tip, if you’re keeping a food diary, is to write down what you plan to eat before you actually eat it. This practice will help you to think twice about the food you’re eating.

While some people keep a pair of “fat pants” as a sort of alert system that weight is creeping back on, consider flipping that idea on its head. If there’s a dress or a shirt or a pair of pants you’ve always wanted to be able to fit into, keep it handy as inspiration. Or, better yet, buy yourself a little something that’s a size or two down from where you are now. Then set a goal to be able to sport those new threads in a challenging but realistic time-frame.

The last and perhaps most important element to keep in mind is perspective.

Remember that this is a long-term process. It’s taken you a lifetime to be where you are in your health journey, and though you may not be exactly where you want to be, keep in mind that this process is about progress, not perfection. Set a long-term goal, some midterm goals, then break them down into short-term goals. This is a strategy that could prove vital to your overall success.

Don’t focus on transitional milestones like a class reunion or bathing suit season. Instead, make your health a priority. Spend time developing a system that won’t fall apart when autumn hits or when the party lights go out. Make a plan that includes feeling better, living longer and looking your best.

laucoma is a silent illness; most people have no early symptoms or warning signs as their peripheral vision diminishes or blind spots occur. It affects more than 2.7 million Americans age 40 and older. Another 2 million do not know they have the disease. January is Glaucoma Awareness Month, and Frantz EyeCare wants to remind people that knowing your risk for the disease can save your sight. If untreated, glaucoma ultimately results in blindness.

Glaucoma can be a sneak thief illness, and currently there is no treatment to restore vision once it’s lost. But when glaucoma is caught early and closely monitored and treated, its progression can be significantly slowed and vision loss minimized.

Higher-risk groups include those of African or Hispanic heritage and others with a family history of the illness. Other risk factors include aging, nearsightedness, previous eye injuries,

Glaucoma damages the optic nerve, the part of the eye that carries the images we see to the brain. As glaucoma worsens, cells die in the retina, reducing the optic nerve’s ability to relay visual information to the brain.

It is important for people with Medicare, caregivers and professionals to be on the lookout for Medicare fraud, waste and abuse. There are several things you can do to help prevent Medicare fraud: • Protect your Medicare number and Social Security number. Only give this information out to health care providers and individuals you trust.

• Know what health care services are covered by Medicare. If you get your Medicare benefits through Original Medicare, contact 800-MEDICARE or

visitmedicare.gov to learn more about what health care services Medicare will cover. If you get your Medicare benefits through a Medicare Advantage plan, contact your plan directly to learn more about your plan benefits.

• Be wary of health care providers who promise you that Medicare will pay for treatments that are not medically necessary. In general, Medicare only covers care that is medically necessary.

• Don’t accept services you feel you don’t need. Be wary of health care providers who try to pressure or scare you into getting tests, exams or expensive procedures that you feel are not medically necessary.

Securing a Florida Tax Residency for the Seasonal Resident F

lorida is perhaps the most desirable retirement destination in the world—and for good reason. Among its many positive features, Florida offers numerous tax breaks.

Topping the list is Florida’s lack of an income tax. Importantly, Florida’s “no income tax” rule is set forth in the State Constitution, and to amend the Constitution requires voter approval—most unlikely in the case of the income tax.

Many other states do impose income taxes. For example, Minnesota’s top tax rate is 9.85%, New Jersey’s is 8.97%, the rate for Wisconsin is 7.65%, and West Virginia’s is 6.5%.

For many retirees, a Florida tax residency is particularly beneficial because it eliminates “northern” state taxation on investment income and IRAs—even if the portfolios and IRAs remain titled in the northern state.

Several of Florida’s other significant tax benefits are (i) no state death tax, and (ii) homestead property tax relief for residents.

While homestead status affords a $50,000 reduction to assessed value, the more important property tax benefit is the “Save Our Homes” exemption. This exemption provides that the assessed value may only be increased annually by the lesser of (i) 3% from the prior year’s assessment, or (ii) the change in the consumer price index—regardless of the actual value increase of the home.

In short, a Florida resident may pay thousands of dollars less in property taxes than the next door neighbor with a comparable “vacation” home.

A number of steps are useful for establishing a Florida tax residency: • Obtain a Florida driver’s license • Register to vote • File for the homestead exemption • File a Florida Declaration of Domicile • Update the estate plan for Florida law compliance • Focus major affairs and relationships in Florida

Florida’s tax breaks are automatic for a person who lives only in Florida.

However, for the snowbird, it is critical to establish Florida as the primary home to obtain Florida’s tax benefits.

For the seasonal Floridian, becoming a Florida tax resident is a matter of qualifying as a non-resident of the northern state under that state’s law.

Many northern states utilize an annual “183 day test” to make a residency determination, back-stopped by “intent” tests if the 183 day test is avoided. The intent tests generally evaluate numerous objective factors (e.g. which state holds the safety deposit box) to determine one’s residency “intent.”

For example, Massachusetts has a dedicated “Residency Unit” to audit persons who claim Florida residency. Also, some states permit tax agents to search taxpayers’ personal websites—such as Facebook—to seek information inconsistent with a Florida residency status.

If a person fails to establish Florida as the primary residence, the northern state may then tax the person’s entire income and estate—including retroactively with interest and penalties.

In summary, establishing a Florida tax residency is the right decision for most people. However, it should be carefully implemented with the use of legal counsel to ensure a secure Florida tax residency status.

Rinse potatoes and pat dry; pierce with fork or sharp knife. Place in large microwave-safe bowl; cover and microwave on high for 15 minutes or until potatoes are soft when gently squeezed. Remove and let cool slightly.

Cut in half and scoop out potato leaving 1/4-inch rim of potato inside skin. Place on prepared baking sheet and spray both sides of potato skins liberally with cooking spray; bake for 15 minutes to crisp.

Sprinkle equal amounts of cheese into each skin. Stir together chicken and wing sauce and spoon over cheese. Top with nut chips and almonds and bake for 5 minutes more. Add dollop of sour cream to each and sprinkle with green onions. Serve with and additional wing sauce, if desired.

Cruise from Florida with Regent Seven Seas Connie Moody, CTA, DS Senior Cruise Specialist

his month’s article was inspired

by Alice Orr, a client and a loyal Lifestyles After 50 reader. She suggested I write an article about cruise destinations that you can visit without flying. I was amazed at the variety of itineraries and cruise lines that offer these cruises roundtrip from either Ft. Lauderdale or Miami. I’d also like to provide some of my favorite things to do on each of these cruises.

The shortest of these cruises is also one of my favorites. Every April, the Regent Seven Seas Navigator cruises through the Colonial South and spends three days in Bermuda. I have been fortunate to host this cruise several times.

The included excursions are wonderful, even in Florida.

My roommate Suzanne Dennis and I went our separate ways in Port Canaveral, the first port of call. She visited the Kennedy Space Center and was impressed with the wildlife preserve and the museum. The view of the last space shuttle on the launch pad was especially memorable. I took an airboat ride through the St. John River Conservancy. Every seat was equipped with a headset to screen the noise of the airboat and so that we could hear the commentary. The bird watching was extraordinary. Both of us long time Florida residents had a real adventure in our own state that day.

Time for a Corndog at the 111th Florida State Fair!

e sure to mark your calendars for the Florida State Fair, Feb. 5 – 16 as THE go-to destination for fun in February.

The Fair starts off with a “Salute to Heroes” on opening day, Feb. 5. All active, reserve or retired military veterans, law enforcement, firemen and first responders are admitted free with valid I.D.

New this year will be the Vietnam War Memorial—The Wall That Heals, a traveling scale replica of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall.

This will be the exhibit’s first time in Florida, February 5 – 9.

Also new this year is the 9/11 Never Forget Traveling Museum, honoring all those who sacrificed during the 9/11 terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001.

The museum opens February 10, and guest rescuers from the New York Fire Department will be there to share their firsthand accounts and participate in a ribbon cutting ceremony. The museum will remain on display until Feb. 16.

Get a map at the entrance and explore the self-guided adventure through the State Fair and discover the fun of the traditional favorites as well as new ones.

“The Florida State Fair is not only a destination where families can find good food and great adventures; it’s also a celebration of Florida’s rich agricultural heritage,” said Florida’s Commissioner of Agriculture, Adam Putnam.

Cultural displays and agricultural learning stations such as the “Mooternity Ward” are what the Fair is about, along with thrilling rides, shopping in the Expo Hall, arts and crafts, giant sand sculptures, tropical fish and more. Learn about aquaculture, catch a horse show and enjoy lots of animals, live entertainment and fun fair food from the traditional corndog to crazy concoctions on a stick.

Senior days are Feb. 9 – 12, and the Fair will offer seminars and shows such as the Country Gold Concert Tour at 2 p.m. on Feb. 10 and 11 starring Leroy Van Dyke. (There is an additional charge for the Country Gold Tour.)

Look for daily free entertainment shows throughout the Fair. Seats are first come first serve, so try to get there at least 20 minutes before the show begins.

The Fair will be held from Feb. 5 – 16 at the Florida State Fairgrounds, 4800 U.S. Hwy. 301 North, Tampa, 33610.

undreds of millions of Chinese are about to set off for home in China for the 2015 Chinese New Year festivities February 19 honoring the Year of the Goat. American Chinese groups will host parades, festivals, feasts, fireworks and religious rites in many cities.

The iconic Chinatown areas of San Francisco, Los Angeles and New York have begun to fade and in other cities a Chinatown is non-existent today. They developed without much planning as places of refuge for Chinese immigrants from racism. They were entry points to America and served as both residential and cultural epicenters of ChineseAmerican life. New patterns of migration have sent many Chinese straight to the suburbs or to areas representing all Asian cultures, not just one.

A visitor to one of the original Chinatown areas does himself a disfavor by saying the place is “dirty and rundown.”

Chinatowns have been popular to visit just because they served both locals who live in the area and also visitors who went expecting to find something they wouldn’t find anywhere else. And you can’t have that much life going on over a long period of time without showing wear.

So, if you enjoy wandering among locals who might be looking for live eels to cook for their next meal or a kitschy golden Buddha, you’ll still enjoy a classic Chinatown like San Francisco’s. Your plan will be to have fun weaving among locals and ducking into shops or finding some steamed buns.

The new Chinatowns The new Chinatowns are really about a new Asia—India, Japan, China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Malaysia, Cambodia, Vietnam, Laos, Burma, Indonesia, Singapore, the Philippines, Guam, Micronesia—and all may be represented in a new Chinatown’s restaurants and shops. The big difference is that these modern micro-Chinatowns are all commercial rather than places where people live upstairs over the restaurants or shops.

Without the locals, an area loses something in appeal for visiting.

These new Chinatowns are more apt to be in Chinese-themed malls reflecting our modern world. They are in cities like Atlanta, Houston, Austin and Las Vegas, even Raleigh-Durham, NC. They have names like Chinatown Center and may be anchored by a Vietnamese tenant and host Chinese, Cambodian, Thai and Koreanowned restaurants. Developers now aim to create a gathering place for a diverse Asian audience. The good food and interesting shops are still a reason to visit, but you won’t have an iconic experience either.

San Francisco San Francisco’s iconic Chinatown still thrives and you’ll enjoy it most if you take a guided tour.

Once you’re past the Chinatown Gate, you start enjoying elaborate 1920s streetlights sculpted to resemble golden dragons lighting the way. Don’t-miss places include the Golden Gate Fortune Cookie Factory on tiny Ross Alley where 20,000 fortune cookies a day are handmade by two women.

Visit the Chinese Historical Society of America on Clay Street or indulge in learning the Chinese culture at the Chinese Culture Center on Kearney Street which offers exhibitions, performances, workshops and tours.

Los Angeles—go to Monterey Park instead Chinatown Los Angeles is a shadow of its early heydey. But ten miles east of downtown Los Angeles, Monterey Park has a population which is nearly 50 percent of Chinese descent. It’s like any American suburb, except that businesses have Chinese signage and are housed in mini-mall com-

plexes with names like Jade Plaza. Restaurant choices are staggering to make!

Manhattan Manhattan’s Chinatown is still vibrant.

It’s the real deal as locals try to get around and tourists stop to gawk. The food, sights and smells of this place are classic. Buy your souvenirs here, have a meal and enjoy the sidewalk markets. Best to do: Museum of Chinese in America (MOCA), Columbus Park’s “Chinese Pavilion” (for people watching) and the Original Chinatown Ice Cream Factory. Besides Manhattan’s Chinatown, the New York area has over ten other areas which are designated as Chinatowns— Flushing, etc.

Washington D.C. Washington’s Chinatown is located just a short walk from Union Station.

Its enormous and beautiful Friendship Arch is said to be the largest of its kind in the world. Their Chinese New Year parade is memorable.

(The closest Metro station is Gallery Place/Chinatown.)

So “Chinatown” has become a cultural shorthand for many things in America. The draws of a Chinatown visit—whether it’s old and both residential and commercial or new and primarily a shopping and dining experience—are still good food, a place of promise for the recently arrived and a new or interesting experience.
