Ahead of the Florida part of her tour, we caught up with the iconic Australian singer and asked her about her life now, nearly four decades after Grease hit the movie theaters and launched her to stardom. Since then, the four-time Grammy winner, singer, actress, activist and breast cancer “thriver,” has sold more than 100 million albums. Recently, she scored another #1 hit on Billboard’s Dance Club Songs chart with a song performed with her daughter, Chloe Lattanzi. She’s 68 and happier than ever.

Q. Can you tell me a little bit about your tour?

A. This tour gets me and my band across the USA again, so it’s a lot of fun and very exciting. This year we have about 30 shows from Florida to the West Coast. As for my show, it’s basically a journey through my life with my music -everything from my early country hits to my pop and rock songs including numbers Grease and Xanadu. I will also be doing something from my latest CD, Liv On.

Q. Are you still a resident of Florida?

A. Yes! We have a home on the beach in Florida. In fact, I’m here right now for some R&R between tour cities.

With Earth Day coming up in April, can you advise our over-50 readers how they can best help their grandchildren become good stewards of the Earth?

A. I think the best thing anyone over 50 can teach their grandchildren is to have respect for and cherish the planet -- it’s the only one we have. We must educate our children about the consequences we face if we don’t protect the trees, water and wildlife. Plant a tree together and teach them to turn the water off when they brush their teeth.

Q. At a time in life when many may be content to rest on their laurels, you are touring, acting, singing and championing favorite causes like breast cancer awareness, cancer research and the environment. Can you speak to the importance of remaining active and engaged as it relates to successful aging?

A. I’m very lucky because as someone in the public eye, I can use my celebrity to bring awareness to causes that are very important to me. Being engaged in life keeps you young.

And taking care of yourself and remaining active helps keep you balanced in body, mind and spirit. I am the happiest I’ve ever been!

Q. In May 2013, you lost your sister Rona to brain cancer.

Has music helped you deal with your pain?

A. Losing my sister was a terrible shock – she was a very healthy, fit person who exercised every day and ate well. She died very quickly and it put me in a spin for about a year. Amy Sky, a wonderful singer and songwriter from Canada, and I realized that there really isn’t any music out there specifically made for people going through loss or grief, so we created Liv On with our friend Beth Nielsen Chapman.

All of us have lost loved ones to cancer. We sat down with our notepads and cups of tea and started sharing experiences. We laughed, we cried -- it was therapeutic. Ultimately we created songs with a message of compassion and hope for those grieving a loss or on the journey to health and recovery. We encourage people to share their own stories at ONJCancerCentre.org, the website for my Cancer Wellness & Research Centre in my hometown of Melbourne, Australia.

Q. We enjoyed your 2015 stint as a judge on Dancing with the Stars. Any plans to become a contestant?

A. That was a lot of fun and I have so much respect for those dancers but, no, I wouldn’t consider doing the show as a contestant. I’m very flattered that they have asked me, but, it’s such hard work. Besides, I have danced with Gene Kelly (Xanadu) and with John Travolta (Grease) -- that was “my” Dancing with the Stars! (Laughing.)

Q. Any exciting plans and projects for the future?

A. Well, in addition to touring solo this year, I will be doing more “Liv On” concerts with Amy Sky and Beth Nielsen Chapman. Later this month I am making a movie with my daughter Chloe, a talented actress and singer/songwriter!

Q. We remember you in spandex in your 1982 video for Let’s Get Physical. What do you do these days to stay healthy?

A. Today I love to go on long hikes with my husband and my dog, play tennis and work out as well. I use meditation and yoga as ways to stay grounded and balanced. I also try to eat organic foods as often as I can. I love veggies, drink lots of water and limit alcohol to an occasional glass of wine now and then. I also laugh as often as I can -- and often at myself (Laughing).

A

s I compose this page, I am thinking about the old rhyme, “April showers bring May Flowers.” While April is typically one of our dryer months, we do have our share of showers – pollen showers that is. Right now we are experiencing an obscene snowstorm of yellow dust outside, the sunshine highlighting the little grains of pollen as the wind blows them all over homes and trees.

And into our nostrils (sneezing).

Okay. Let me grab a tissue and just deal with it. After all, pollen is what makes new trees and plants and flowers possible. And it’s sure better than snow.

Speaking of Mother Nature, Earth Day is April 22 and in this issue of Lifestyles After 50 magazine, we pay tribute to our collective mom with some poems and a short story by our readers, news about an Earth Day rally in Washington, D.C. and things you can do to reduce your carbon footprint, protect the environment, and save money too.

Choices Today for a Healthier Tomorrow Eating a healthy diet and exercising often can help control or delay health issues associated with aging, like high blood pressure and diabetes.

Try to be physically active for at least on most or all days of the week.

Recipe Corner • by Lauren HiLton Want to turn that leftover Easter ham into something that will have them hopping back for more? Here is a recipe that is quick, easy, and delicious.

This is a simple, delicious, and nutrient-rich recipe that is loaded with antioxidants. It makes 6 servings so you can always half the recipe.

Ham and Cheese Breakfast Quiche

Strawberry, Spinach and Walnut Salad

Ingredients: 2, 12 oz. packages frozen hash brown potatoes 1/3 c. butter, melted 1 c. cooked diced ham 1 c. shredded Monterey Jack cheese 3 eggs 1/2 c. heavy whipping cream Directions: • Preheat oven to 425 degrees.

• Combine the hash browns and melted butter or margarine in a small bowl.

Press this mixture into the bottom and sides of an ungreased 10-inch pie pan.

• Bake at 425 degrees for 25 minutes.

• Remove pan from oven and arrange the ham and cheese evenly over the potatoes.

• In a separate small bowl, beat together the eggs and the cream. Pour this over the ham and cheese.

• Return pan to oven and bake for 425 degrees for 30 minutes, or until the custard has completely set.

Ingredients: 7 -10 c. fresh baby spinach 5 c. sliced fresh strawberries 1⁄4 c. walnuts 1⁄2 c. crumbled feta cheese Dressing 1⁄2 c. vegetable oil 1⁄4 c. balsamic vinegar (or use raspberry wine vinegar or white wine vinegar) 1⁄4-1⁄3 c. white sugar 1 pinch paprika 1-2 tbsp. poppy seeds Directions: • In a large bowl, toss the spinach with the strawberries and walnuts.

• In another small bowl, whisk together all dressing ingredients, starting with 1/4 cup sugar and adding in more to taste, then pour over the spinach; toss to combine.

• Sprinkle the feta over the top of salad. Serve immediately.

A Day at the Museum

ifestyles After 50 magazine held one of their “Day at the Museum” events on March 15th at a stunning venue in downtown Tampa, the Florida Museum of Photographic Arts, located in the Waterfront Arts District in Rivergate Plaza’s architecturally significant Cube. The soaring six-story atrium is recognized as one of the most impressive interior spaces on the west coast of Florida.

As is traditional with all Lifestyles events, admission to the museum was free. Featured were exhibitions by Linda Connor, who has traveled to all corners of the planet will her large format camera, and, an exhibition of early 20th century panoramic images created with the unique Cirkut camera. In addition to viewing the compelling images, more than 200 visitors enjoyed free coffee, snacks and a variety of door prizes including the Grand Prize of four tickets to “Disney on Ice.” Over 30 vendors were on hand to answer questions about health insurance, eye care, financial planning, home services, hearing problems and much more.

Allergies!

his is the time of year in Florida when allergies (Atopic Dermatitis=AD) are at their peak. For pets the common itchy skin disease is AD which is caused by pollen, house dust mites, molds, dander, etc. Licking, scratching, or red skin may be the only sign of AD. AD may occur all year round, not just in the spring. The constant licking and scratching can cause secondary bacterial, fungal, or yeast infection of the skin. The scratching of ears and licking of feet are also signs of AD. Diagnosing AD requires a complete medical exam along with history, skin and/or blood testing. The tests may be done in the hospital or sent to a diagnostic lab. The diagnosis will help determine a treatment plan.

Treatment plans can be as simple as avoiding the material causing the allergic reaction. They can include antibiotics, antifungals and shampoos with conditioners to treat the secondary infection. The plans will also include medication to treat the allergic reaction. These medications can be used alone or in combination. Medications are listed below.

Antihistamines - Over the counter - Varied response to each product. Inexpensive.

Glucocorticoids - Prescription - Work very well, but have side effects. Inexpensive and have been used for years.

Immune Suppressive drugs – Prescription - Work very well when used correctly. This medication is expensive.

hether decorated or dyed (or to hide on the side), eggs are inextricably a part of the Easter and spring season. Here’s a recipe for some healthy seasonal cooking.

NUTRITION: COLOR: EGGS-CETERA:

eggs have the highest quality protein that can be bought. They are a low carb; gluten-free food with vitamin D and all 9 essential amino acids.

egg shell color makes no taste or nutritional difference. What a hen eats determines yolk color. if dark yellow, it ate greens; if light yellow, it ate grain.

Production: it takes a day to produce an egg. The largest chicken egg weighed 1 pound.

Sell by date: “Sell by” doesn’t mean expiration. if refrigerated, eggs can last 3 to 4 weeks after a carton’s sell by date.

Cage free: a “cage-free” hen may have been kept in a warehouse but not a “cage.” Conditions vary. When hens are allowed outdoors for a period of time each day, eggs can be labeled, “Free range.” “Certified Organic” is used when hens have outside access and are fed an organic vegetarian diet. “Natural” on a label means nothing.

Eggs & Bell Peppers Serves 4 Ingredients: 2 lg. red bell peppers, halved lengthwise; seeded.

2 turkey sausage patties, cooked; crumbled ½ c. zucchini, diced ½ c. yellow onion, diced ½ c. Portobello mushrooms, diced 2 cloves garlic, minced 4 lg. eggs Salt &pepper, to taste Garnish: Fresh basil, chopped Directions: • Preheat oven to 375°.

• Place peppers, cut side down, on lightly greased baking sheet; roast 15-20 minutes.

• Sauté diced onion over medium/medium-high heat until they begin to soften. Add garlic, zucchini and mushrooms. Sauté until zucchini is al dente (firm). Add sausage.

• Once peppers are ready, dry inside of each half with a paper towel; stuff with a scoop of sausage/veggie mixture. Press down with a spoon to make an indentation for egg mixture.

• Whisk eggs, salt and pepper. Pour evenly into stuffed peppers.

• Place bells in large casserole dish, cover and bake 30-40 minutes until eggs are set. Garnish.

Aging In Place:

he U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention defines aging in place as “the ability to live in one’s own home and community safely, independently, and comfortably, regardless of age, income, or ability level.”

In other words, it’s the ability to avoid or delay living out one’s last days or years in an institutional and/or medical environment.

Aging in place is a goal most of us aspire to. In fact, according to research by the American Association of Retired Persons, (aarp.org), nearly 90 percent of people over age 65 want to stay in their home for as long as possible, and 80 percent believe their current residence is where they will always live.

But the reality is that as people age, their health, eyesight and mobility may decline, and their environment may need to be adapted to ensure their continued safety. They will likely need some degree of assistance, whether that is physical help or just good advice.

Fortunately there are a variety of home modifications, new technologies, and home health services that make aging in place more viable than ever. It’s never too early to plan now for the future and best done when one is still in good health and of sound mind.

One of the biggest challenges of aging is the heightened risk of falling.

According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (cdc.gov), 2.8 million older people are treated in emergency departments for fall injuries each year. One out of five falls will cause a serious injury such as a broken bone or a head injury. These injuries can make it hard for a person to get around, do everyday activities, or live on their own.

Some safety adaptations to consider: installing non-slip flooring, grab handles

It’s Getting Easier in the bath or shower, a curb-less walkin shower, a walk-in bath tub, a comfort height toilet, an elevator or stair-lift, and lever-style doorknobs. These modifications can be expensive so financial situations must be considered.

Currently, many home modifications may be tax deductible as medical expenses.

If it becomes necessary to use a wheelchair, doorways may need to be widened to between 34 and 36 inches.

Swing-free hinges can also trim about 2 inches of clearance from a doorway.

Consider removing cabinets from under sinks to allow access. Entry steps will need to be replaced with ramps.

I t ’s i m p o r t a n t t o g e t r i d o f unnecessary clutter, furniture and possessions while you still have the energy and ability to do so. And toss out the throw rugs that could cause a fall. A neat and uncluttered home is easier to take care of, clean, and provides better safety and maneuverability.

Be sure to empty the attic while still physically fit (or have someone else do it for you) and make a point of keeping it

empty. You’ll want to avoid risking a fall from a ladder when you are older.

Have your vision checked regularly.

Make sure to install night lights in each room of the house and throughout hallways. Switch to LED lighting which doesn’t need to be changed as often as regular bulbs.

Eat healthy, get recommended amounts of calcium and Vitamin D for bone health, and have an exercise regimen that improves leg strength and balance, such as Tai Chi. Technology is also improving our ability to stay in our homes. Devices available now include noise-canceling hearing aids, smart canes and walkers, medical help alarms and a variety of home sensors that monitor systems and people. Home robots can provide help and communications to family members and caregivers.

While older people often lose their ability or desire to drive as they age, computers offer the ability to order nearly everything we need online. More and more groceries and pharmacies

are getting into the home-delivery service.

And self-driving cars appear to be set to carry us wherever we want in the not too distant future.

Of course nothing takes the place of good, old-fashioned companionship.

Home health care services abound and caregivers can provide that social interaction and camaraderie that is so vital to elders. They can help with bathing, shopping, medicines, light housekeeping and more.

Make sure to consult your local Area Agency on Aging to find out about resources and support services that are available to older Americans. Their goal is to keep seniors living independently in their own homes while enjoying quality of life.

Ultimately a person’s health and mental status will determine whether or not aging in place is an option. But it can be a more desirable, affordable, and satisfying choice as long as safety, medical, transportation and social needs are met.

ike a lot of us in Florida, perhaps you’ve had your fill of winter guests and feel now’s your turn for a break. For a spring getaway that features lush hills rising out of the sea, white sand beaches and crystal-clear turquoise waters, consider the U.S. Virgin Islands.

First, the basics: the U.S. Virgin Islands are a group of islands in the Atlantic Ocean about 40 miles east of Puerto Pico and immediately southwest of the British Virgin Islands. St. John, St. Thomas and St. Croix, as well as several dozen smaller islands, comprise this U.S. Territory. Historic Charlotte Amalie on St. Thomas is the capital. The USVI are in the Atlantic Time Zone (one hour ahead of Florida).

The main language is English, although American ears will have to adjust to the accent and speed of the Creole English. Because the islands are so close

to Puerto Rico, you’re bound to hear Spanish and also French and French Creole. Currency is the U.S. dollar.

As with Florida and other Caribbean destinations, their peak tourist season is December through March. April is when the crush of tourists begins to abate and great travel deals abound.

Weather wise, April still feels comfortable. Steady trade winds from the east keep temperatures in the mid- to high-80s with lows in the mid-70s range.

2017 marks the centennial celebration of Denmark selling the islands to the United States. Law prohibits designating co-health care surrogates

reader asks: Knowing the importance of having in place up-to-date advance directives, I recently visited an attorney to have my Health Care Surrogate Designation prepared. When I requested that my two children serve as Co-Health Care Surrogates, the attorney told me that this could not be done. Was she correct?

Response: First I want to commend you for having your Health Care Surrogate Designation prepared by a professional. In my opinion, the Health Care Surrogate Designation, which allows a competent adult to designate another competent adult to make medical decisions in case of incapacity, is probably the most important legal directive among that class of legal documents generally referred to as “ad-

vance directives” and, as such, should only be prepared by an experienced attorney.

You received good advice from your attorney. Although Florida Statute Chapter 765 allows for the designation of successor Health Care Surrogates (and naming successor Surrogates is obviously encouraged), the statute does not allow for CoHealth Care Surrogates. So had your attorney prepared your Health Care Surrogate Designation in the manner you requested, you certainly would not have been well served as the directive would have been a nullity and, as such, totally in-

effective as a matter of law. And the relevant statute notwithstanding, just try and imagine the myriad of problems which could arise if your two children were attempting to exercise their authority over your health care at the same time.

ou’ve probably heard the expression that a “tired dog is a good dog.” But exercising your best friend not only helps keep your sofa intact, it’s doggone good for the both of you in terms of health, fitness, happiness and mental sharpness.

Of course, any time spent with your dog will strengthen the bond between you.

Obesity can shorten a dog’s life by putting them at a higher risk for diabetes, cancer and other diseases. So watch their calorie intake (including treats), feed them a high-quality dog food and aim for at least 30 minutes of exercise a day.

Here are some ideas to get those paws moving and tails wagging: • Good old-fashioned walks in the fresh air.

• Swimming in the pool, a lake or the ocean if available. This can be a cool way for dogs to exercise in the Florida heat.

• Play hide and seek with your dog, hiding treats and toys – or you!

• Toss Frisbees and balls or other objects – race to retrieve.

• Check around to see if there is a dog club offering agility training. Many dog parks feature agility obstacles too.

• Search out local dog parks that offer cool shade, water, and lots of room to run.

• Flyball, lure coursing, dock diving, herding trials and freestyle (dancing) are terrific options that can keep your companion in tip-top shape.

ibernation had not been good to Erlo3 and Modra6. When the computerized Auto-Stim awakened them after 2035 cycles, they spent no less than 22 full lengths re-acclimating to normal living again.

Growth was the most difficult. It took a full length for the soreness in their legs to stop. Solid food and drinking were also challenging after nutritionizing intravenously for so long. Sore gums came rapidly and lingered. Calcitrox injections sped up the healing process.

What was the most hard to fathom were the out-of-reach controls, storage cabinets, portholes and the counter-tops.

They both had to really stretch, or else stand upon something in order to use them. Something was dreadfully wrong.

It was time to break out the diagnostic records and physical graphs. They wirelinked themselves to the computer, affectionately known as ‘Fezik.’ They checked and rechecked, comparing current statistics with those made at their departure.

What they found was shocking and made both their jaws drop simultaneously. It was so quiet you could hear a Kleeg scepter drop. They had both shrunk, a good nine-and-a-half inches! The reason that they hadn’t realized it was that they both shrank the same amount. After this had fully sunk in, they burst out laughing and didn’t stop until they could breathe no more. They eventually regained their composure, found themselves lying on the deck, and soon fell asleep until it was time to wake

up naturally. Time actually meant nothing unless there were goals, plans, schedules or deadlines. They realized it might be good to establish a few, so they unpacked their plotters and began inputting information.

The ship’s computer knew more about them than they did themselves, both about their past and future. They entered the codes which unlocked the Fu-Plotter, to find out where they were bound. Much humming ensued, along with buzzing, clicking and flashing lights. The Airscreen began displaying information. Modra6 gasped!

“Erlo! I know where we’re going. It just now revealed our destination and we will be there tomorrow!”

“What? Where? Where are we going?” Erlo blurted.

“Erlo! Tomorrow is Earth Day!” shouted Modra.

“No! No! That’s impossible!” Erlo exclaimed. “What are you talking about? It cannot be guiding us to planet Earth!”

“Listen. I’m only telling you what I’m reading,” said Modra. “It says ‘ETA Monday 14 Zig 2832 – Earth.’”

“But Modra! Earth is a ghost planet! It’s dead!

It’s barren! There is no air, no water, nothing. There is no life there and absolutely nothing to sustain life!”

They looked at each other, stunned and frozen in time. They fell sobbing in a prolonged embrace--their minds spinning out of control.

A day away, the waning Earth was in its 3rd quarter, watching them in silence.

Letters To Editor Dear Editor, I wanted to share my journey about my long-distance caregiving for my Mother, Nellie E. Fusco. In 1997, Mom had a stroke. She went into rehab, they assessed her condition and deemed it appropriate that she stay in a long-term care facility. Not my Mom. There were five of us siblings with differing opinions, but Mom ruled!

She asked us to let her show us that she could live independently, with some care at home. We wanted to honor her wishes. The most important aspect of arranging for in-home care is having an appropriate needs assessment and getting the right level of help at the right times, both day and night.

Mom was given excellent services through NJCare (Medicaid). I also joined a Caregivers' Support Group in Steuben County, N.Y., which helped me through these difficult times.

Nellie E. Fusco She was able to live on her own for a long time and ultimately made the decision when it was time for her to go into a care facility, where she resided for the last three years of her life.

She lived until 2007, with the satisfaction of living on her own terms.

Since then, I have worked with a group in Wayne, N.Y. to bring "Aging in Place" services to that rural area.

Also, I have been able to make contact with an excellent resource here in Florida. Tidewell Hospice offers services based on clients' needs requirements.

In summation, caregivers need to research and take advantage of all the appropriate resources available in the community based on the individual’s emotional and physical needs.

Next month, we’ll be on the lookout for some cool remembrances about dear ol’ Mom for our Mother’s Day edition.

t never ceases to amaze me how many articles I continue to read about investors being fleeced by unscrupulous financial advisers. In an age where information is so readily accessible, why does this continue to happen?

The good news is that investors can do their homework on any prospective adviser. The first place to look is Broker Check (brokercheck.finra.org). This site contains information on every adviser who either currently holds or has held a securities license. The summary page for advisers lists their firm, years of experience, and if there have been any disclosures against them. The more detailed report also includes further information such as securities licenses held, specific states where the adviser is registered, and general employment history.

It also includes more detail on any disclosures, if applicable. This is important, since all disclosures are not created equal. A disclosure can contain anything from a personal bankruptcy to a client complaint about an unsuitable investment. A brief description accompanies each disclosure, which can often be useful for context of the particular situation.

The cousin to Broker Check is Adviser Check (adviserinfo.sec. gov), which details all the same basic information for investment advisers and investment advisory firms. In a very general sense, regulators consider a broker to be a financial adviser who charges commissions, and an investment adviser

to be one who operates on a fee basis instead of commissions. Advisers who are compensated by both commissions and fees will appear on both sites.

The other important document found on Adviser Check is the Form ADV, which is the document that each advisory firm must file annually to outline all aspects of its business. This will have information on everything from client fee schedules to business and educational background of the firm’s principals.

The ADV will also state whether the advisory firm has custody of client assets, or whether it uses an independent third party to hold these assets. In our opinion, it is imperative for an investor to make sure that the firm with which they do business uses an independent custodian, as this creates a system of checks of balances that ultimately protects the investor.

And finally, maybe the most revealing question—how does the adviser get paid? Those advisers compensated on a transparent, level-fee basis have much less incentive and ability to defraud than those who get paid a commission from each client transaction.

Personal Income Tax Changes for Next Year

BY LES MEGYERI When he campaigned for president, Donald Trump said he planned to put H&R Block out of business – people could do their own taxes because the laws would be so simple. Now he will work with Congress to pass what is coined the Middle-Class Tax Relief and Simplification Act.

T

he particulars aren’t known, but there is a good chance that some changes will occur. Following are the current proposals.

Tax rates: It is likely that the top tax rate will be reduced to 33 percent from the current level of 39.6 percent. Also, the lowest rate will be raised to 12 percent. The seven income brackets will be reduced to three.

Itemized deductions: The Trump plan caps them at $200,000 a year for married couples and $100,000 for single filers. The standard deduction would rise to $15,000 for single filers and $30,000 for married couples, so it may not be worthwhile to itemize deductions.

Mortgage interest and real estate tax deductions:The itemized deduction cap will limit the mortgage interest rate and real estate tax deductions. These proposals may be defeated because the real estate industry strongly supports the retention of interest and real estate deductions.

Personal exemptions: Worth $4,050, these exemptions may disappear. Presently, these credits are not available to high income taxpayers, but high earners will get a break if the alternative minimum tax is repealed.

Capital gains: The Trump plan does not reduce the capital gains tax which now tops out at 20 percent, but Congress may

reduce this tax. There is a substantial capital gains Medicare surtax which was enacted to pay for Obamacare but if the health law is repealed, the surtax will go away.

Medical deductions: Currently taxpayers may deduct medical expenses if they exceed 10 percent of their adjusted gross income. (Those 65 and older may deduct the amount that exceeds 7.5 percent

through the end of tax year 2016.) If the Affordable Care Act is repealed, the rate may go down to 7.5percent, where it used to be. Fines for not having medical insurance may also disappear.

Medicare payroll tax: The Affordable Care Act raised the payroll tax on W-2s by almost 1 percent which will presumably go away once the act is dismantled.
