Festival Season Has Sprung S
pring is coming, whether it feels like it or not. While the official start of the season is March 19, spring abides by no mere mortal’s rules. It comes and goes at a pace that surprises even the most prepared of us every month. For many Floridians, spring begins with the start of the numerous festivals that the months of March and April house. Too many to count, these festivals act as an invitation for Florida natives to welcome spring with open arms as they begin to shed their winter woes and clothes. From the Gulf to the Atlantic, festival season is just beginning. BIKE WEEK One of these festivals is one simply called “Bike Week”. Centered around Daytona Beach, this weeklong festival begins March 6 and ends March 15 and presents the opportunity to get out into the fresh air. This year will be Bike Week’s 79th year running, and they’re not holding back with the number of festivities. This huge event attracts fellow riders on an international scale, creating a culturally rich atmosphere of different languages and stories. Thousands of bikers are expected to be in attendance, making for a bustling and electrifying weeklong party. Featured events include the vintage and custom bikes show, concerts and several barbecues. From swapmeets to bike shows to bar and saloon meet ups, Bike Week 2020 holds the promise of excitement and making new friends. Visit their website, www.officialbikeweek.com/ , to learn more. SHARK TOOTH FESTIVAL If you’re looking for something to do with visiting family or even just something that differs from the mundane, Shark Tooth Festival in Venice is a great way to greet spring. Named “The Shark Tooth Capital of the World”, this festival allows you

to get up close with the classic oceanic predator’s chompers. Paired with great food, music and vendors, this festival ensures a great way to celebrate spring on the beach. Start planning now, because although this short three-day festival doesn’t start until April 3, they’re expecting a big turnout for the weekend. Learn more at their website: www.specialolympicsfloridasarasot.godaddysites.com/ . STRAWBERRY FESTIVAL I wouldn’t be able to talk about Florida springtime festivals unless the Florida Strawberry Festival was included, and rightfully so. This grand festival pulls an average of 500,000 folks annually from all over the state in a celebration of spring, strawberries, and community. The 11-day event has many events for its visitors to attend, ranging from entertainment such as Rascal Flatts or 98 Degrees, to carnival rides and food. But this famous festival doesn’t stop there—you can enter various contests such as the art show, livestock competitions, or even the Strawberry Shortcake Eating Contest. Learn more about the festival at www.flstrawberryfestival.com/ . Spring has sprung and so have our festivals. Whether you’re looking for something to do on the open road or with your family, Florida’s spring events never disappoint. There’s something for everyone no matter where you look. More details for all these festivals can be found at their respective websites, including tentative schedules, scheduled talent, and directions.

ou’re never too old to learn and as long as you’re still learning, you’re still growing. I am a success! I did it! I finally conquered the self-service checkout at my local Wal-Mart without the help of an employee or another shopper. I shouted “YES!” when the machine spat the receipt out into my hand as I drew my clenched fist back at my side. Then I broke into my “happy dance”, which amazed the many onlookers, since my “happy dance” is the Pasodoble. I suppose it really looks weird when your partner is invisible. My visible partner and wife also had a recent learning experience at the checkout. If you’re using cash, you can’t insert all the bills at once as you do at the ATM, you insert one bill at a time. Evidently, the machine is being paid by the hour. For many years I’d been avoiding self-checkout for ethical reasons. I didn’t want to contribute towards someone losing their job. However, an employee recently told me that these devices do not actually put anybody out of work. I cannot recall her exact reasoning because I was distracted by her nose which seemed to be growing longer and longer as she spoke. All of this began with the elimination of manned toll booths. Now, we have the Roomba floor cleaner and cars that can park themselves, not to mention driverless cars. The fast-paced growth in robotics technology and artificial intelligence has caused many to fear that we are heading toward an “Asimovian” society where man has become subservient to the robots that have taken over. But as for me, all I can say is “Klaatu barada nicto”. Mike Wright can often be spotted throughout Polk County and the Tampa Bay area showing off his prowess at various Wal-Mart and Home Depot stores. ‘The Way Back’ March Film By RANDAL C. HILL

lending a classic sports story with a tale of midlife crisis, Warner Brothers’, The Way Back, isn’t a predictable Disney-type sports drama or an updated Hoosiers, but an unflinching study of life’s pitfalls that can bring down the best and brightest of us. In high school, he had been a superstar. Handsome, whip-smart, popular. And on the basketball court, nobody could match the jaw-dropping skills of Jack Cunningham (Ben Affleck). By graduation, Jack had earned a full university scholarship and a potential ticket to a 24-karat dream life. Then, suddenly, he walked away from

his beloved sport and forfeited his future. From an early age, Jack liked to drink. A lot. His imbibing morphed from adolescent Animal House-type partying to quiet, full-blown alcoholism. As a result, he experienced a fall from grace that would devastate his marriage (which included a life-altering tragedy) and any hopes for a successful, or even satisfactory, life. Since Jack’s glory days more than 20 years previously, the basketball team at his alma mater has fallen with a thud. Then a possible break materializes: the current coach suffered a heart attack. Jack—now a middle-aged, chainsmoking construction worker who has never left town—is offered a shot at redemption: coaching a motley team of troubled, undisciplined losers. Jack reluctantly accepts the task, surprising everyone, including himself. As it turns out, he has as much to learn as his players do. Over time, the boys start to come together as a team and even begin to win some games.
Will his new-found success give Jack “So proud of this one and the the ability to finally conquer the demons incredible team behind it,” says Affleck, that have plagued him for much of his the holder of two Academy Awards and life? New Law is a Ticking Tax Timebomb by EmmA HEmNESS, ESquirE, bCS, CELA
H
ow much do you know about the SECURE Act? The new federal legislation took effect on January 1, creating a few, yet significant, changes regarding your retirement savings like IRAs and 401(k)s. Some changes are beneficial: increasing the age from 70 ½ to 72 for withdrawing the required minimum distribution from your traditional IRA or 401(k). The law also eliminated the age cap, previously age 70 ½, for allowing ongoing contributions to an IRA if one is still working. Tick-Tock. Tick-Tock. Many are beginning to learn that this law created a ticking “tax timebomb” for your children who have been able to delay taxable distributions from an inherited IRA for perhaps a few decades. Now your children must take out distributions in 10 years or less, and at a time most children are likely in their prime earning years with higher income tax brackets. Unbeknownst to many, this 10 year limitation creates new impacts on Estate Planning, how revocable living trusts are used, how beneficiary designations are completed -- necessitating a careful review of one’s legal documents. We’ll be having an educational workshop to discuss some of these impacts on revocable living trusts in April. A
re you a baseball fan or know a baseball fan and looking for something to do this month? Spring training is in full spring for the state of Florida, and it’s no different for the New York Yankees. This year marks the 25th anniversary of the Yankees’ spring training at George M. Steinbrenner Field. On March 13 at 1:05pm, the Yankees and Detroit Tigers will be having a scrimmage that is $48 per person, although this price is subject to change based on demand. The Inside Experience Spring Training program is a featuring addon to your spring training ticket as it allows visitors to go behind the scenes and learn what exactly spring training looks like for ball players. arch is Women’s History Month, or, as the more avid among us call it, Women’s HERstory Month. But history or HERstory, (tomato –tomahto), March honors the contributions of women to historical events, as well as contemporary society. We mark with pride the females who fought for social justice: the abolition of slavery, women’s suffrage, and those who broke the glass ceiling in formerly male-dominated fields. As a humor writer, I would like pay homage to the pioneer women of one such formerly male-dominated field: the world of comedy, particularly stand-up. While it’s true that comediennes, have entertained us for many decades, it was usually a collaboration: a film, a radio or TV show. Funny ladies such as Gracie Allen, Lucille Ball, even Elaine May found success with male partners. So who were the early women who had the courage to stand up on their own? Totie Fields: Tiny Totie Fields, in 1950, was a rare woman in this man’s world, paving the way for future women comics. At age 20 she broke the gender barrier and became one of the first female MCs in night clubs. She eventually became a fixture on the Ed Sullivan Show, which brought her into the homes of America.
Funny Ladies!
By SuSan Goldfein
Belle Barth: Also performing in the 50s, Belle Barth was the first pottymouthed female comedian of our era. She was funny, raunchy, and like her male counter-part, Lenny Bruce, had the privilege of being arrested during a performance. Belle broke ground for the likes of Joan Rivers, Amy Schumer and Sarah Silverman. Moms Mabley: From a tragic young life, Jacky “Moms” Mabley rose to become known as the Mother of Black Comedy. She entertained in the 50s, 60s and 70s appearing in a housedress and floppy hat. She went from minstrel shows to playing Carnegie Hall, tackling topics considered too edgy at the time, including racism and sexuality. At age 27, she revealed she was a lesbian, becoming one of the first openly gay comedians of our time. Phyllis Diller: Phyllis Diller entered the comedy world at age 40. In her overthe-top costumes and makeup, Diller’s
comedy act was saucy, self-deprecating, and punctuated by her trademark cackle. She pioneered the one-liner. The target of her act was her husband, “Fang,” turning the tables on male comics who targeted their wives. Joan Rivers: Rivers’ early 60s routines were talky, single-girl rifts about her inability to land a husband. Unlike Diller, who was flamboyant in her attire, Rivers wore little black dresses and prim updos. She was quick, brash and often angry. Her humor was personal, revealing her life with humor. She is encapsulated by The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, Amazon’s hit series about a woman, alone on stage, trying to succeed in the 50s in the male-dominated world of stand-up comedy. There are more I would like to mention: Lily Tomlin, Whoopi Goldberg, Carol Burnett, but I believe I’ve run out of space. So, as the MC at the comedy club beseeches the audience: Please give it up for the funny ladies!

cBD – weeding out the facts By Dr. Matthew encinosa

BD and hemp products for dogs and cats are becoming increasingly more common so it is important to be well informed on them. Here are some things to consider before starting your dog on CBD products. What is CBD? CBD stands for Cannabidiol. It is one of the many chemicals derived from the cannabis plant (also known as marijuana or hemp) and has no psychotropic (hallucinogenic) effects on the brain. Basically, it does not have the ability to cause a high feeling. The “high” of marijuana is actually caused by the molecule THC. What does it do? The actual activity of CBD in the body has not been studied very well. There are several different receptors on cells in the body that show some response to the CBD molecule. These could be related to some of the proposed medical benefits in humans that include: antiseizure and protective to the brain, anti-inflammatory, pain relieving, anti-anxiety, antitumor effects, and treatment of vomiting and inappetence. Is it legal? CBD is only legal in the state of Florida if it is derived from industrial hemp. This is hemp that has been grown specifically to have
a very low concentration of THC in it. Is it safe? CBD by itself is considered safe and nontoxic. Many of the concerns lie within the other components of CBD products. For example, human grade CBD can potentially contain xylitol (an artificial sweetener) which can be very toxic to dogs. Additionally, they can contain higher percentages of THC which can also cause toxicity in our furry friends. What product is best? There is no good answer to this question because there are so many products and no clinical trials in dogs and cats. Currently, we recommend making sure it is a veterinary product and that there is a certificate of analysis with whatever product you buy to ensure the THC content is lower than 0.3% and that there are no harmful chemicals for animals. Remember that products you order can come from anywhere and the rules in those states may be different from Florida.

Spring Break Without the Spring Breakers By ReBecca Fending
S
pringtime can be a scary time of year for Florida natives: Invasion of the Spring Breakers. The partying and beach-takeovers can be a major turnoff when it comes to finding things to do around the state during the month of March. So, what do you do when your kids, grandkids or great grandkids come to visit? Throughout the state, there are several different spots that are great to get away from the spring chaos that is college students. From tranquil beaches to spring training, Florida has several family-friendly destinations for spring festivities: 1. Sanibel Island With its pristine, white sand beaches and small island feel, Sanibel Island offers the chance to escape the everyday and find your quiet bliss with the family. If you’re a fan of collecting shells, Sanibel will be your new go-to with their expansive and well-kept beaches. Once you’ve added plenty to your collection, you can relax with your toes in the sand and soak in the peaceful sunshine. The island also has
diverse wildlife due to its lush flora, including an impressive number of mangroves. This quiet beach is a destination for Florida natives and their families as it’s often overlooked when it comes to college spring break visitors with its lack of condos and typical neon bar signs. 2. Fort Myers Not far from Sanibel Island, Fort Myers is a great choice for spring break with your family for the same slow, quiet ambiance Sanibel preserves. If you have any fishermen (or women) in your group, Fort Myers offers fishing on their beach pier. No fishing license is needed in Lee County, so the fishing pier is open to anyone and everyone. Fort Myers is also home to JetBlue Park, the spring training ballpark of the Boston Red Sox. For anyone who has ever wanted to go to Fenway, JetBlue is its Floridian clone. Complete with the Red Sox’s signature “Green Monster”, JetBlue is a great attraction for the whole family. 3. Tallahassee A great potential road trip for those of us farther down the coast, Tallahassee gets a chance to breathe during spring break due to the mass exodus of students. The city has its own museum, appropriately named the Tallahassee Museum, where you can stroll the nature trail and see the various animals they keep. From panthers to otters, the museum promises a great time for the family. And not far from Tallahassee is Wakulla Springs, the world’s largest and deepest freshwater spring. Open from 8 am to sunset, this natural attraction is bordered by a historic cypress swamp. Wakulla’s spotless waters are home to a plethora of aquatic life, including manatees and alligators—a must see for all ages. Whether you want to escape the spring breakers or simply find new destinations to visit with your family, Florida is home to more than a few beautifully serene getaways. March in the state means getting out and exploring what’s in your backyard, so, put on your safari hat and start planning your spring!

Wills • Probate Living Trusts Power of Attorney
YET ANOTHER REASON TO MAKE A WILL by WILLIAM R. MuMbAuER, ATTORNEY www.flwillstrustsprobate.com A reader asks: My husband recently died. He had no Will. He is survived by children from a previous marriage. Unfortunately, my name was never put on the deed to our home. When I showed the deed to an attorney, she said that because I have stepchildren I am only entitled to a life estate in our home. Is this true? Response: First, let me say I am sorry for your loss. Like most things involving the law, the answer to your question is: it depends. Incomplete title to the homestead vests in your late husband’s children, subject to your life estate interest as surviving spouse. A life estate allows you to possess the homestead until your death at which point complete title would automatically vest in your stepchildren. But wait. Florida Statute Sect. 732.401 gives you the right to decline your life estate interest and, instead, elect to take one-half ownership of the homestead as a tenant in common with your stepchildren who would equally share the remaining half. Typically a surviving spouse makes this election to be able to sell the homestead with the other owners and avoid incurring all the expenses which come with maintaining a home. Should you choose to take advantage of this statute, you must make the election in writing with the probate court within six (6) months of your husband’s death. If you are unsure as to what to do, there is also a provision in the statute which allows you to petition the court to enlarge the time in which you have to decide whether or not to make your election, but this petition too must be filed within six months of your husband’s death to be recognized. Your problem could have been so easily avoided if only your husband had made a Will. Mr. Mumbauer, a 5th generation Floridian, has maintained a law practice in Brandon, Florida since 1980 with emphasis on estate planning. Mr. Mumbauer takes special pride in representing the senior community by maintaining a sensitive and practical approach to problem solving. Mr. Mumbauer is a member of the National Academy of Elder Law Attorneys, the Elder Law Section of the Florida Bar. Mr. Mumbauer is also a Mentor in probate law and has been qualified by the Second District Court of Appeal in Florida as an expert witness in matters involving the drafting of Wills. Status: In a Relationship By Michael B. Wright
O
n social media, I occasionally see the status: “In a Relationship. To me, this is a deliberately vague statement which could mean different things. It may mean that the significant other is immature and unwilling to make a commitment. It could mean that they are of the same sex and are not quite ready to let the world know. The word “relationship itself is vague and can have multiple meanings. Many people have a relationship with the personage of whomever or whatever they define as their Creator. Some have a relationship with their home, their car, their pets or their television sets (especially during Super Bowl Sunday). Many define success by wealth, position, power, influence or status. I base success upon one’s ability to develop and maintain good relationships with other people. There are as many different kinds of such relationships as there are different kinds of love: agape, storge, philia, eros, pragma, philautia, ludus. The Greek word “storge indicates a close familial love, i.e. family relationships. My wife and I are nanny and manny to two brothers, a 5-year-old and a 9-year old. A few months ago, they were bickering. “Poppa, he’s pointing at me! Make him stop! I instantly flashed back to me and my brother,
Richard, as kids, doing the same exact thing. I recalled the two of us playing on a blanket in the back yard one day. Rich started crying loudly after he’d cut himself on the edge of a round Mason jar seal. Our Mom rushed out, lifted me up by one arm, and hit me as I yelled “I didn’t do anything! In reflection, I realized that my normal behavior must have warranted such a response from her. Rich and I spent many years apart when I went into the Navy and when he moved to Arizona to be Mom’s caregiver during her final years. We really bonded when my wife and I flew out to visit for a week or so. After the boys’ pointing episode, I contacted Rich saying that I wanted to apologize. “Did I pick on you a lot when we were kids? “Mike, I hated you growing up! Now, we live roughly an hour apart. With
differing schedules and responsibilities, we strive to get together periodically for a “Guy Day, leaving our wives at home while getting together to play catch-up, reminisce, laugh and encourage each other. The beer’s not bad either. Although he’s four years my junior, I have the highest degree of respect for my “little brother and I value our relationship.

‘History’s Heroines’
H
istorically, recognition of influential women was kept to a singular day (International Women’s Day, after garment workers’ strikes in New York City where women marched for economic rights) or a week (National Women’s History Week) prior to 1987. President Ronald Reagan and the Women’s National History Project, Congress established March as Women’s History Month. Therefore, it is only fitting that we recommend four books that we as mentors, teachers, and grandparents can share with young readers about several special women who broke new ground, changed the world, and deserve our attention.
I Am Malala: How One Girl Stood Up For Education And Changed The World, by Malala Yousafzai
Bad Girls Throughout History: 100 Remarkable Women Who Changed The World by Ann Shen 100 revolutionary women who are profiled in this illustrated book are “bad” because they challenged the status quo and changed staunch rules. From artists to scientists, these influential women affected change in their own eras, times, and places.
Only 10 years old when the Taliban took control of her region in Pakistan, prohibited girls from attending school and didn’t allow women in the marketplace, Malala fought to be educated even in the face of death. An international symbol of peaceful protest, she’s the youngest ever Nobel Peace Prize winner. This is the autobiographical story of her attempt to change the world by promoting universal access to education.
A Computer Called Katherine: How Katherine Johnson Helped Put America On The Moon by Suzanne Slade and illustrated by Veronica Miller
Secret Engineer: How Emily Roebling Built The Brooklyn Bridge by Rachel Dougherty
A math prodigy, Katherine skips grades in elementary school, begins college at the age of 15, and is employed by NASA. However, because she’s a woman, she is excluded from working with the male engineers. Her acumen, skills and determination are eventually recognized, and she joins in to help plan space missions, including what which put man on the moon for the first time.
Emily Roebling grew up in 19th century New York as a “bright, shiny spark who loved to learn,” and gravitated to science and math. She met her husband, engineer Washington Roebling, who took on the immense task of building a bridge that connects Manhattan to Brooklyn. When he fell ill and could no longer work, Emily learned the science of engineering and supervised the project. The book’s illustrations of blueprints and architectural drawings give one an intense appreciation of Emily Roebling’s contributions.

Woman’s Best Friend?
I
am crestfallen, dejected. But let’s stick with crestfallen. The word origin is animal-related, and my unhappiness has everything to do with an animal: with an article I read concerning the emotional life of dogs. It’s no secret I’m a dog lover. When I started writing, we cohabitated with two beautiful Labrador Retrievers, Bette and Davis. They inspired my first book, How Old Am I in Dog Years? I believe they lived happily to the ripe old ages of 15 and 16, respectively. I also believed they loved us. Now there’s Sam, a 17-pound rough coat Russell Terrier, my first small dog. I’ve discovered a small dog is a different experience. First of all, I can lift him, which I do, frequently. And while he’s in my arms, I plant kisses on his head, and he, in turn, licks my face. Sam sleeps in our bed and cuddles. Sam follows me around the house. When he wants my attention he’s jealous if my focus is elsewhere. I’m his primary caregiver and he’s clearly attached to me. He forgives me for giving him sink baths. I adore Sam, and was convinced the feeling was reciprocal. Until now. I thought he loved me for me. Because he senses I’m a good person who occasionally feeds him table scraps, and takes him to the dog park. Because I rub his belly and tell him he’s a very good dog. I thought our bond was unique, and in his dog brain, I was special. Wrong! Said article revealed an inconvenient truth. Yes, my dog loves me, but not because I’m me. He can’t help it. It’s in his canine DNA! Apparently, dogs have an amazing ability to bond with other species. Raise a dog with humans, it’ll bond with humans. But raise a dog with sheep, it’ll bond with sheep. Or goats. Or penguins. You name it. To quote, “dogs have an abnormal willingness to form strong emotional bonds with anything that crosses their path.” I could be replaced by a robot had Sam been introduced to one when he was still in doggie diapers. This knowledge is most disappointing. I almost feel betrayed, although I realize it’s not Sam’s fault. But now I’m confused. When Sam stares up at me with those big, brown, soulful eyes, is he appreciating me, or might I just as readily be an elephant? But humans must be resilient. I wish I could unlearn this new discovery, but I can’t. I can only hope one day soon animal research will prove to be like health research. Last month eggs were banned, and caffeine put you 24 hours nearer death. But research this month says to eat eggs several times a week, and coffee gives you an edge when playing “Jeopardy.” So, I’ll diligently read the newspaper, searching for studies that negate the previous findings. Ideally, the next wave of animal scientists will uncover evidence that dogs are uniquely programmed to bond with humans. Particularly with women in their seventies.

Nothing beats The Florida Orchestra live by Kelly SmiTh
N
o matter how many times you hear Vivaldi’s The Four Seasons in the elevator, nothing compares to the synergy of seeing it live on stage. Just like nothing matches the thrill of fingers flying across the keyboard for Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concerto No. 3, or the goosebumps as redemption rises from despair in Bach’s St. John Passion. Experience it all live with The Florida Orchestra throughout March. Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concerto No. 3 (March 6-8): Just one Joyce Yang reason why Rachmaninoff’s piano concertos are so difficult: He had famously large hands that could span 12 keys. One of the toughest is his Piano Concerto No. 3, called the “Mount Everest” for the piano because it’s a real thriller to watch live – especially with electrifying pianist Joyce Yang. Michael Francis conducts the program, which also includes Beethoven’s playful Symphony No. 8 and Sibelius’ final Symphony No. 7. Kids and teens get in free with Classical Kids tickets to this and all Tampa Bay Times Masterworks concerts. Be sure to come 1 hour early for the Pre-concert Conversation with Maestro Francis. Bach’s St. John Passion (March 20-22): This is the first time The Florida Orchestra has performed Bach’s choral masterpiece retelling the Crucifixion – one of the most famous Easter works in the world. Michael Francis conducts, featuring The Master Chorale of Tampa Bay, in venues throughout Tampa Bay. Bright Side of Beethoven morning Coffee Concert (March 25 & 26): Discover the joyful side of Beethoven, with selections from Symphony No. 8, Leonore Overture, part of Piano Concerto No. 4 featuring the Young Artist Competition winner Marco Jimenez, and more. Stuart Malina conducts. Free coffee and doughnuts. Vivaldi’s The Four Seasons (April 3-5): A night with TFO’s premier strings, directed by lead violinist Jeffrey Multer, includes Vivaldi’s timeless masterpiece along with Tchaikovsky’s Serenade for Strings and more. Free tickets for kids and teens in advance. If you go: Florida Orchestra performs regularly at the Straz Center in Tampa, Mahaffey Theater in St. Petersburg and Ruth Eckerd Hall in Clearwater. Tampa Bay Times Masterworks and Raymond James Pops series tickets are $18-$48. Tickets at FloridaOrchestra.org and 727.892.3337 or 1.800.662.7286.

et’s face it, we all watch TV. Whether it’s the news, Real Housewives or golf, we’ve all got a reason to watch. But nobody anyplace in the world doesn’t grumble about the price of their TV service. It doesn’t matter if you have cable, satellite or carrier pigeon, the cost keeps rising and the companies seem to find more ways to take money from our already tight budgets. Reducing or eliminating these bills is the genesis of the concept of “Cutting the Cord” to the cable companies. The central concept of cutting the cord is reducing or eliminating what you pay for these cable TV services. There are two primary approaches, the first involves cutting the cable altogether and going back to the good old days of TV over the air, and the second involves changing how you get your TV services to reduce the cost and keep it there. This article describes each approach, the pros and cons and what you should expect while implementing each. The “Good Old Days” approach involves the complete elimination of paid TV services. In effect, you buy an antenna one time, point it to a major city and you get your TV over the air. Fun fact, many of the channels you’ll get over the air are actually broadcasted in high definition, so they’ll be crystal clear on your TV screen and besides the one-time expense of buying and installing an antenna, you’ll never get a cable bill again. I’ll answer the question before you ask it – the cost of antenna ranges from $25-$150 depending on how far away from a city you are. The “Nick the Cable” approach is a little bit different that the “Good Old Days” approach because you effectively eliminate the TV channels from the cable company and use the Internet to “stream” the channels to your TV. Now, I know what you’re thinking – how do I stream and where is this river coming from? Well, the river are companies on the Internet that license many of the same shows that you currently watch and broadcast it over the Internet at lower prices (e.g. Netflix, Hulu etc.). Once you have a streaming service, the rest is history as your TV is most likely ready to stream from these accounts for you with Roku, Amazon FireTV etc. So, you’re probably wondering, is cutting the cable worth it? Most cable cutters will respond with one simple question: do you enjoy paying upwards of $250 a month for TV? If the answer is no, then cable cutting is for you.

The Psychedelic Vaudeville Revue By RANDAL C. HILL
Become a Published Author with Dorrance. We want to read your book!
Goldie Hawn, Arte Johnson and Lily Tomlin on set of Rowan & Martin’s Laugh-In Photo Credit: The Everett Collection “Sock it to me!” “Here come de judge!” “You bet your sweet bippy!” “Look that up in your Funk and Wagnalls!” At one time, it was virtually impossible to get through a day without hearing a few of these silly statements thanks to the astounding success and widespread influence of Rowan and Martin’s Laugh-In. Just called Laugh-In by most viewers, the show premiered as a groundbreaking NBC-TV special in September 1967. It proved to be such a surprise ratingshit that NBC added it to their regular weekly schedule beginning the following January. “At the time, nobody was doing pure comedy,” reflected creator George Schlatter. “All variety shows were the same. I wanted something that reflected my own minimal attention span and love of comedy.” Laugh-In was basically an hour of modern-age vaudeville. Viewers were witness to cockeyed sight gags, irreverent one-liners, off-color sketches, social issue playlets and absurdly satirical newscasts. Performers fell through trap doors, tipped over on tricycles, and endured buckets of water and cream pies in the face. Fleeting celebrity cameo appearances featured such disparate stars as ukulele maven Tiny Tim, movie icon John Wayne and straight-arrow politician Richard “Sock it to Me?” Nixon. Everything flashed by at a furious pace, with one clever critic declaring the Monday night bash “like an ‘Ed Sullivan Show’ on an LSD trip.” Laugh-In was hosted by urbane straight man Dan Rowan, with (supposedly) dim Dick Martin as his foil. The pair had knocked around for years in Las Vegas with limited success. Laugh-In portrayed them as hosts who often appeared to be befuddled by the wacky events swirling around them — high-octane go-go dancers, an ongoing cocktail party, an end-of-the-show joke wall. A vast repertoire of celebrities also emerged from the show, including Arte Johnson, Ruth Buzzi, Henry Gibson, Jo Anne Worley, Flip Wilson, Judy Carne, Alan Sues, and Gary Owens. Rising above all these temporary stars, though, were two women who would go on to entertainment renown. Perky Goldie Hawn found fame as a bumbling, giggling, bikini-clad blonde babe with silly sayings painted on her skin. Lily Tomlin’s star turn came as Ernestine, a sardonic telephone operator who immortalized such lines as “Is this the party to whom I am speaking?” Although Laugh-In loped along until 1973, the show had been on life support since the end of the 1960s. But NBC would soon return to the satire game, thanks to a former Laugh-In writer, Lorne Michaels, who created Saturday Night Live for a welcoming mid-1970s Laugh-In audience. When asked about his show’s legacy, Schlatter replied, “Break the rules. Once something becomes a rule, it’s made to be broken.”

Recipe By LauRen ReeVeS
MaRCH 17TH
re you looking for an easy slow cooker recipe for St. Patrick’s Day? The typical recipes are easy to come by, but not always easy to execute (who wants to make a brine and soak their brisket for several hours to a day?). Nothing says “Irish it was spring” quite like the classic dish of corned beef and cabbage. Celebrate the start of warmer weather with this simple crockpot meal:
Classic St. Paddy’s Day Corned Beef Ingredients 1 onion, cut into wedges 4 potatoes (or cauliflower) of your choice, peeled and quartered 1 lb. baby carrots 3 cups water 3 cloves garlic, minced (or 3 TBSP minced garlic) 1 bay leaf 2 tablespoons sugar (or stevia) 2 tablespoons apple cider vinegar 1/2 teaspoon ground black pepper 1 (3 pound) corned beef brisket with spice packet, cut in half 1 small head cabbage, cut into wedges Preparation Place onion, potatoes, and carrots in a 5-quart slow cooker. Combine water, garlic, bay leaf, sugar, vinegar, and contents of spice packet in a small bowl; pour over vegetables. Top with brisket and cabbage. Cover and cook on Low until meat and vegetables are tender, 8 to 9 hours. Remove bay leaf before serving. Enjoy!

Plan for your future with help from Ameriprise's Overton W
hat does my full financial picture look like? When can I retire? How do I make sure my assets pass from one generation to the next? Throughout his career, Steve Overton, CFP®, Financial Advisor, CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™ practitioner at The Overton Group, a financial advisory practice of Ameriprise Financial Services, Inc., has helped his clients answer these types of questions – and many more – to guide them toward their respective financial goals. "When I meet with clients and prospects, I explore a broad range of topics that are likely to influence their financial futures, from their families and career aspirations to education expenses and retirement," explained Overton, who has been named Managing Director by Ameriprise Financial. "What I learn becomes the foundation for a financial and investment strategy based on the individual, not a Wall Streetprovided 'one size fits all' solution." Once Overton has prescribed a carefully considered and suitable solution, he revises the plan over time to reflect new goals
and priorities, which helps the plan keep pace with changes in the marketplace as life unfolds. Operating from offices in South Tampa and Sun City Center, Overton additionally focuses on cash flow analysis, retirement planning strategies, saving for education, insurance and annuities. Longtime Tampa Bay-area residents will likely recognize Overton from the popular consumer investigative news segment "Eight on Your Side" on local NBC-affiliate WFLA-TV 8, which he joined in 1983. In his award-winning, 22-year run in journalism, Overton spent 19 successful years working in broadcast television. "With 'Eight on Your Side,' what I gravitated toward was the greatest risk – what's the worst thing that can happen?," he shared. "There are some parallels in what I do at Ameriprise. We assess the things that can go wrong and try to address those scenarios with clients first." Overton began the second phase of his career as a financial advisor in 2000, earning his CFP® designation in 2005. With nearly

20 years of experience in helping clients achieve their respective financial goals, Overton takes the time to understand what’s truly important to you, while assisting you in preparing for the expected and unexpected things in life. "Ameriprise is a firm that, from the beginning, has focused strongly on financial planning,” Overton said. "Because of this, the firm is very accommodating to my style of practice, which is to go deep with clients and try to understand the whole picture. That's exactly why I’m here."
