Standing room only at South Barber board meeting New teachers hired, Crisis team at school Tuesday following death of student, Miss South Barber Pageant rescheduled for Thursday at 3 p.m. By Yvonne Miller On Monday night district patrons and students filled the board meeting and front office areas of the South Barber USD 255 office to standing room only to show their support for a teacher and coach. This was at the May meeting of the South Barber Board of Education with all members present: Kent Swartz, Jeff Black, Deb Helfrich, Bob Schrock, Dana Roark, Janet Robison and Michael Anderson. Superintendent Brad Morris and Board Clerk Julie Johnson were also present. Parent Mariah Doherty was on the agenda and spoke on behalf of the group. She told the board she wanted to speak in open session, so she wouldn’t mention names. Doherty referred to a teacher and coach that was recently relieved of his coaching duties. “He (the coach) was not given an explanation from administration. This left him and others concerned about the fate of his teaching position,” Doherty said. “Due to this action, a group has been formed to support any staff member of South Barber.” “I am here to voice concerns we heard at those meeting and from members of the community,” Doherty said. A sign-up sheet at the board meeting had 26 signatures, although it’s not known if everyone signed the document. “As soon as word got out, students began tweeting and the next day they

had a petition in support of their teacher and coach,” Doherty said. “These are not just players for him as a coach, but his students and they are concerned.” The Newsgram later confirmed there were 58 student signatures on the petition, after duplicate signatures were removed. Questions raised from the community that Doherty listed: “Did he not win enough games? Surely that can’t be because he did just as well as other coaches in the district. Did he not play the right kids? Why didn’t they give him more than one year to prove himself? Why wasn’t he shown some respect by giving him a reason? How can he better himself if he doesn’t know what he did wrong? “These questions have not been answered and are causing the community to lose trust in not only the administration, but the board,” Doherty said. She also mentioned concerns expressed from a prospective coach who listed “fear they might not be able to meet expectations working under this administration.” Doherty said parents ask, “Why would we risk losing an excellent teacher that our kids have learned so much from?” She credited the teacher for piquing her son’s interest in history, describing his teaching style as, “fun, pertinent and interesting for even an eighth-grade boy.” “Our fear is that we will lose this teacher. Coaching is important to him, a passion of his,” Doherty said. “As you

make decisions, please remember we elected you to represent us, but mostly our children.” Later in the meeting the board held a series of executive sessions for over an hour to discuss non-elected personnel matters. No action was taken upon return to open session. Mark Lambert was listed on the agenda to discuss non-elected personnel matters, but left word he would not be at the meeting. New Teachers Hired Following a short executive session, the board approved Jeff Lantz as business/technology teacher at the high school for the 2013-14 school year. Morris said Lantz is from Harper and has taught at Wichita South. Mary Ann Gillig taught business/technology and will teach seventh- and eighth-grade math next fall to replace Mary Rose, who retires at the end of this school year. Martha Arbuckle received board approval as the new fifth-grade teacher. She’ll replace Candi Watts, who resigned. Arbuckle is a graduate of Southwestern College in Winfield, Kan. She holds a master’s degree in curriculum and instruction and is endorsed in early childhood development for grades one – three. She’s been teaching Pre-K at Oxford. Other Board and Superintendent Business Current bills of $360,726.39 were approved. Of that total, $78,611.75 was flow-thru money for special education and KPERS. Included in bills is a $50,000 payment to P1 Group for the improvement project at the grade school. Morris reported that P1 representatives made their final walk-through of the grade school May 9. He said the summer improvement project of HVAC units, new windows and more will begin May 22. The board approved a resolution for the adoption of tax and securities compliance relating to obligations issued and to be issued by the district. This is for Capital Outlay General Obligation Bonds dated May 1, 2013. This will pay for the P1 project at the grade school. See S.

Waynoka community blood drive supports hospitals

The Oklahoma Blood Institute (OBI) is partnering with Waynoka High School to host a community blood drive from 2 p.m. to 7 p.m., Wednesday, May 15, in the cafeteria. The drive is sponsored by the FFA. With blood donors’ support, those in area hospitals won’t have to be concerned about the availability of blood. Donors with OBI provide every drop of blood needed by patients in Share Medical Center and 140 others across the state. Since there is no substitute for human blood, supplies must constantly be renewed. OBI encourages anyone who is 16 and older to donate and save a life this spring. Although all blood types are needed, those with O-negative type blood are especially encouraged to donate. According to AABB (formerly American Association of Blood Banks), those with O-negative blood type make up only nine percent of the national population; however, O-negative blood can be used by anyone in urgent need. Appointments are not necessary, but can be made by calling 877-340-8777 or visiting www.obi.org.

Aid to motorist results in arrest By Marione Martin An Alfalfa County deputy stopped to aid a possible stranded motorist and ended up with a drug arrest. According to documents on file, Sheriff’s Deputy Blake Trekell was on routine patrol on May 4 about 7:08 p.m. traveling southbound on SH8 approximately four miles north of SH45. Trekell saw a white Dodge four-door pickup with a Louisiana tag that appeared to have coasted off the road. The pickup was sitting in the ditch at an angle, not parallel to the roadway. Trekell could see the pickup was occupied by a man, later identified as David Lamar Dukes, 36, of Sulphur, La., who was leaned back in the seat. Deputy Trekell turned around and pulled behind the pickup, activating

his emergency lights for safety. Dukes stepped out of his pickup and began moving rapidly about the exterior of his vehicle, dropping objects as he got out. Dukes dropped a pill on the ground and began kicking around in the dirt. Trekell asked what the pill was, and Dukes replied it was a “sex all night pill.” He continued to move around rapidly, seemingly uncontrollable with his movements. Trekell could see in plain view, inside the lower compartment of Dukes’ driver’s side door panel, a small glass pipe commonly used to smoke methamphetamine and a small clear baggie next to it often used to package methamphetamine. Trekell asked Dukes to retrieve his driver’s license. Dukes removed his wal-

let from his pocket, pulling out all the cards and dropping them on the ground causing the wind to blow them under the vehicle. Dukes was finally able to retrieve his license and give it to the deputy. Trekell described Dukes as acting very defensive and questioning what the deputy was doing, glancing into the door panel several times. Trekell asked Dukes to step to the front of his patrol vehicle so he could perform a pat down for weapons based on what he had observed in Dukes’ pickup and on the considerable size difference between the two of them. Trekell told Dukes he recognized the pipe and asked for an explanation. Dukes said it was a pipe he used to smoke potpourri he got, which he added was legal. Trekell placed Dukes in handcuffs and explained he was being detained for safety while he figured out the situation. Before being seated in the patrol car Dukes said there might be a baggie of meth in his pickup. Trekell retrieved from the door a small glass pipe with residue inside consistent with meth and a small clear plastic baggie containing a small amount of what later field tested positive for meth. Dukes later stated he paid $60 for the meth and he hadn’t smoked it for very long. He was taken to the Alfalfa County Jail. Dukes has been charged with possession of a controlled dangerous substance, a felony, as well as possession of paraphernalia, a misdemeanor. An appearance bond was set at $5,000 and has been posted.

Kiowa’s General Store celebrates 20th anniversary and contributing over $400,000 Public invited to anniversary open house May 16

By Yvonne Miller It all began 20 years ago when a group of Kiowa, Kan., women brainstormed about a way to raise funds to help pay for Kiowa’s Centennial Celebration for the Opening of the Cherokee Strip in September of 1993. The late Floyd Lamkin, who was known as the leader for organizing Kiowa’s Centennial celebration, approached a group of ladies who gathered for aerobics and coffee several mornings each week. He asked if these ladies had any ideas for fundraising for the big event. “We’re good at garage sales,” Kathleen Schrock recalls telling him. Lamkin said he would find them a building and a clothing rack. “That’s how it started,” Lenora Dodds said. Those women remembered for spearheading the first garage sale held at the John Deere Building on Main Street from May through September of 1993 are Kathleen Schrock, Lois Lukins, Maxine Nelson, Mary Lou Wright and Mary Anne Newton. No record of sales was kept from that endeavor. No sales or dates were kept from their 1994 sale held in the old hotel across from the depot either, but all proceeds went to the Southwind Hospice in Pratt. In 1995 the ladies did the same thing with $1,600 given to Southwind Hospice. In 1996 the late Monty Thompson,

a longtime educator, allowed the ladies to use the middle room of his building on east Main Street rent-free for garage sales. Scott Becker let the ladies use his house on Fifth Street to store seasonal items. A decade later Cindy Bryan donated her house and property directly west of the Thompson Building for storage. All proceeds from the sales went to worthy causes in the area. By 1997 the women started paying $125 per month rent to Thompson. In 1999 the ladies officially opened year-round as The General Store in the Thompson Building. The ladies voted to affiliate with the Greater Kiowa Community Foundation. This enabled the general store exemption from income tax but to charge sales tax and donate to other 501 (3) c organizations. This required election of officers:

President Wanda Root, Vice President Charlene Brintnall, Treasurer June Terwort, Secretary and Historian Lenora Dodds. Directors elected to the Foundation were Maxine Nelson, June Terwort, Kathleen Schrock, Betty Jo Roy and Wanda Root. Others serving as officers in these 20 years include Lyla Cropp, Lou Stone and Lois Allenbach. The store continued to thrive, and in late 2004 the board began action to purchase the Thompson Building, consisting of three lots and two buildings. None of the ladies responsible for starting this project probably ever dreamed that in 20 years the project would be thriving. The General Store’s available records show it’s donated over $400,000 for many worthy projects through the years. See Store Page 38

Store

The General Store supports community and area projects, youth, purchases equipment for the hospital and so many more entities. They’ve helped people in need, such as who’ve had house fires. Their giving is endless. Volunteers, Donations and Purchase of Stuff Keep General Store Open People from all over the area come to the general store to shop. They’ll find not only used clothing, jewelry and knick knacks, but appliances, furniture and much more. The store is open Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., and Saturdays from 9 a.m. – noon. Amazingly, it’s all done with volunteers. Records show that an estimated 80 volunteers have helped there to date. There are two shifts daily with two or

three volunteers needed. Some volunteers work on a regular basis, others work “as needed.” “Some of our volunteers are well into their 80s,” Dodds said. While most of the volunteers are women, Dodds listed Dean Brintnall, Bob Hays and Cecil Vannaman for doing lots of heavy lifting, repairs and recycling in the early days, and later Joe Capistrant. Through the years many individuals and organizations offered their help to the General Store to make such physical improvements to the building as signage and lighting. The General Store has great sales on seasonal merchandise. Excess merchandise is taken by volunteers to places like Wichita’s Open Door store for homeless and unemployed and Christian schools in Oklahoma. Now a Salvation Army truck comes to Kiowa and takes a load of extra items from the “green storage” unit in the back. On behalf of board members and di-

rectors, Dodds said, “People have helped the general store in so many ways. All the many volunteers are so appreciated. The store could not operate without the donations of all the people who take the time to drop them off here. We appreciate those donations so much and all of our shoppers.” The public is invited to the General Store’s 20th anniversary open-house celebration Thursday, May 16, from 11 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Officers called to Stateline Road By Yvonne Miller Monday at 5:17 p.m., a call came into the Barber County Sheriff’s Department from a local farmer about a vehicle he discovered parked on Stateline Road onehalf mile west of Highway 8 along the south side of the road. Because that location just south of Kiowa, Kan., is in Alfalfa County, Barber County contacted the Alfalfa County Sheriff’s Office. Alfalfa County Undersheriff Dennis Fisk confirmed that call came in at 5:40 p.m. Fisk said he and Deputy Blake Trekell responded to the scene to join Barber County law enforcement. Undersheriff Fisk said they investigated a shooting at the scene. He said no names would be released until the investigation is complete.

We are one of the few remaining studios to convert slides to DVD. After we’re gone it’s going to be tougher to get it done. If your family’s history is stored in slide trays, we can still convert them to CD or DVD. Many slides are fading severely.
