Lynn Says
Another airliner tragedy By Lynn L. Martin (CNN) – “Debris from EgyptAir Flight 804 – which crashed in the Mediterranean with 66 people aboard on Thursday -- has been found by Egyptian forces, the military says. Here’s what we know so far: • Passenger belongings and aircraft parts were found 180 miles north of Alexandria, military says. • Plane swerved sharply then plunged from 37,000 feet to 10,000 feet after entering Cairo airspace, Greek officials say. • Cause of crash is more likely terrorism than technical fault, Egyptian and U.S. officials believe. • Airbus A320 made stops in Eritrea and Tunisia prior to taking off from Paris.” I don’t know what the solution is to
the increasing terrorism involving airlines. We’ve seen a lot of stories how the American TSA is bogged down and is unable to keep up with the flow of traffic through their security checkpoints. Then when you read that at the Paris airport more than 70,000 employees have special clearances to work on the airplane side of the terminal, thwarting terrorism seems almost impossible. There have been a couple of crashes where it appears the pilots sabotaged the aircraft. One tragedy was avoided earlier in a flight to the United States when a bomb was found hidden in a common 12-ounce soda pop can. Heck, flight attendants pushing carts down the aisle and offering soft drinks is one of the few perks left in modern aviation. I would think these terrorists’ evil deeds would sour the tourism industry. I’ve never flown overseas and after my last domestic airline flight I swore that I would pilot my own little plane to any USA destinations. Yes, most trips will take longer than in a 500 mph jet-
liner, but there are no three-hour waits in TSA lines either, which cancels out much of the speed advantage. I realize some people shudder at the thought of flying in a light plane, but my argument is that at least I mostly have control of my own fate. I can land my Cessna on most football fields or county roads if there is a mechanical failure. That is not true of a big airliner. When I was working on an instrument rating in St. Louis before I moved to Alva, I had a flight instructor who was a fanatic about declaring in-flight engine power outages. After experiencing his tricks for about 50 flights, I became much cooler at selecting an emergency landing spot. I never did finish up my instrument rating. I passed the check ride separately from the ground exam and I never accomplished the two close enough together. I now consider myself fortunate that I never finished up that rating since I don’t fly nearly enough hours to maintain IFR currency.
STEM camp offered at Cherokee For students ages 1418 with disabilities By Marione Martin Teens with disabilities have an opportunity to attend a free, week-long day camp this summer in Cherokee.
Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) are the focus of this camp for 14-18 year olds. Sponsored by the Oklahoma Department of Rehab Services (DRS) partnering with the Cherokee Public Schools, this first-ever STEM camp will introduce students to hands-on activities involving math, engineering and technology. The camp is divided into two sections. The morning will focus on math and technology while the afternoon will emphasize technology and engineering. Students will work independently and in groups to improve math skills while designing, building and racing cars at the end of the week. The teams will also have documentarians who will be responsible for taking pictures and videos to document the work and processes they use throughout the week. Students will learn to use Windows-based computers and related technologies to design, build and race multiple HT Gravity Racers. They will
also learn to use digital cameras and video production software to create a documentary of the entire process. Students receive a disc containing the design and video production software used, completed racers and extra materials to construct more, a group photo and a disc including video and photos from the camp. The camp is open to all students with disabilities, ages 14-18 (those on an IEP, 504 Plan, or other documented physical, mental or cognitive disabilities). It will be held Monday-Friday, July 18-22, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Cherokee High School. The camp is free and a lunch will be provided daily. For more information contact Kimberly Osmani, Statewide Transition Coordinator, DRS, by phone at 405-6352768 or by email at kosmani@okdrs. gov. DRS helps people with disabilities prepare for, obtain and maintain employment. The agency begins serving youth with disabilities at age 16.

Jim Scribner impressed with the tele-hospitalist and the food at Share Medical Center. At 5 am one morning two weeks ago, Jim Scribner awakened his wife Cleo and said, “I can barely breathe.” She said, “We’d better get to the hospital.” Jim was scared and felt it was a critical situation and thought about taking a trip to a larger hospital in Enid but didn’t want to call an ambulance to leave town. He also worried he wouldn’t live that long to make it to Enid. Dr. Ott in the SMC Emergency room guessed it was COPD. (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease). Jim said, “He wanted to keep me in the hospital overnight and get me set up with a breathing machine. After that he wanted me to confer with Dr. Rader on the tele-hospitalist unit. To have immediate access from Alva, Oklahoma to the Chief of Staff of a large OKC hospital is amazing. Of course, Dr. Rader grew up around here and that was comfortable. Dr. Rader determined I needed asthma medicine and it wasn’t COPD.
“I don't know how many hospitals this is being done in the United State yet, but this telemedicine service is a great plan to help cover our nation's shortage of doctors. One other thing, I hate to knock the cooks who were here in past years, because they had to work with what they had, but the food during my stay was terrific. The had a menu list you could choose from. I had chicken-fried steak one night and if I had closed my eyes and not seen the hospital bed, I would have thought I was eating at the bowling alley. This is GREAT. Hospital food has always taken a rap ever since the second hospital was invented.”
NURSES NEEDED!
With the convenience of the tele-hospitalist program, the patient count has increased about 400%. SMC needs more RNs and LPNs right now! Call Mary Herold 580-430-3390 Great Benefits and VERY competitive wages.

Kiowa Hospital Board members retain seats
By Yvonne Miller The Kiowa District Hospital Annual Board meeting was held at the town’s community building Thursday night with under 50 district patrons in attendance. Two board seats were up for reelection. Board member Jim Parker said he would volunteer to retain his seat. When nominations opened, no one expressed interest in running and Parker was reelected by acclamation. Pat Myers who served as board president had declined to serve another term. However when the floor opened for nominations, there were none. Barber County Commissioner Paul Harbaugh spoke from the crowd and asked Myers if he would be willing to serve again even though that was not his intention. Myers accepted the nomination and he was also reelected by acclamation. Later in the evening when the board held their regular meeting they held election of officers. They are: Brenna May, president; Jeff Miller vice-president; Chantae Simpson, treasurer; Jim Parker, secretary; and Pat Myers, director. The remainder of the meeting will run in a separate story.

Facelift is underway at Project Pink House June 6-17
The faith based builders led by Joe Wilson is a group of volunteers from across the country who have built over 230 churches or para-church buildings in more than 88 countries. Since 1999, Wilson joined the ministry of World Mission Builders as the domestic coordinator. Wilson is responsible for planning, recruiting volunteers, fundraising, and the building of the domestic projects. Their latest project takes them to south-central Kansas June 6-17. In fact, they will have two remodelling projects: one in Kiowa and another in Hazelton. The Hazleton project is a remodel of a two-bedroom rental house at the Freedom Gates Boys Ranch. “We will be housing the majority of the volunteers with local families in Kiowa; additional host families are still needed,” Myers said.
A few will be housed at the Project Pink House where seven rooms have already been remodeled. The large job of feeding everyone will take place at the Kiowa United Methodist Church. Food donations will come from a variety of places within the county area where groups and businesses are volunteering and bringing the food for the workers. Other volunteers are donating bottled drinks and snacks for them while others are donating paper products. Some of the volunteers will be rolling into town with their own RVs and will be setting up at either Project Pink or at the nearby RV park. Altogether, there will be about 40 volunteers coming to Kiowa to assist with the remodelling at Project Pink. To learn more about Project Pink visit the website at www.ProjectPinkHouse. com.
Volunteers arrive in June to remodel old Kiowa Hospital
The Project Pink House in Kiowa, Kansas, will be getting a facelift thanks to the Church Growth Ministries and the World Mission Builders. Transforming the old closed down hospital into a loving home for pregnant women is becoming a reality thanks to this latest support. For the past six months, local families have been busy tearing down walls, ripping out the old carpet, painting rooms and hallways; all in preparation to get the building ready for women to stay at the Project Pink House “We got to the point where we needed professional contractors to assist us in putting together the kitchen,” said volunteer and co-founder Brenda Myers. “That is where Joe Wilson and his angels from the Church Growth Ministries and the World Mission Builders came to our rescue,” said Myers. “We are still in need of volunteers to assist the crew from World Mission Builders. Whether you can help with housing or construction, let us know,” said Myers. Brenda Myers can be reached at 620-825-4462 if you can donate or help support this mission with finances. “The goal of Project Pink is to renovate the building into a loving, lifeaffirming place for women to call home,” says founder Miranda Allen. “Project Pink is a positive living program where we offer women a place to call home, an opportunity to rebuild their life and give them hope for the future.”

DRS offering week-long summer camp in partnership with Cherokee Public Schools The Oklahoma Department of Rehabilitation Services (DRS), in partnership with Cherokee Public Schools, Think Through Math, and Tech-Now, Inc., is offering a weeklong summer day camp for students with disabilities between the ages of 14 and 18. This will be at Cherokee High School July 18-July 22, 2016. DRS is an employment agency for people with disabilities that begins serving youth with disabilities at age 16. Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) is a hot topic at the national level and is a focus for
students with disabilities as mentioned in the Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act (WIOA). DRS is excited about offering its first ever STEM Camp for summer 2016. This will be a wonderful opportunity for students with disabilities to be introduced to STEM, have hands-on experience doing STEM activities, and to think about careers in STEM fields. The camp is divided into two sections – the morning will focus on math and technology while the afternoon will focus on technology and engineering. Students will work
independently and in groups to improve math skills and design, build, and race cars at the end of the week. The teams will also have documentarians who will be responsible for taking pictures and videos to document the work and processes they use throughout the week. There is no cost for students to attend this camp, and lunch is provided daily. For more information, please contact Kimberly Osmani, Statewide Transition Coordinator, DRS, by phone at 405-635-2768 or by email at kosmani@okdrs.gov.
Goltry woman charged with drug possession By Marione Martin A Goltry woman has been charged with felony drug possession after she was questioned at Great Salt Plains State Park (GSP) in Alfalfa County. According to court documents, on Saturday, May 7, Park Ranger Ryan Webster and Game Ranger Ben Bickerstaff were conducting foot patrol about 1:05 a.m. along the North Spillway at GSP. They saw three people along the walkway on the lower level where people commonly fish. They checked the fishing licenses of Meilani Corder, Jacob Phillips and Michael James.

As they spoke with the three, Webster observed an open fishing tackle box. In plain view in the top, Webster saw a small pipe that is commonly used to smoke illegal drugs. He asked who owned the tackle box, and Phillips said, “It’s ours.” Webster picked up the pipe which had burnt residue and an odor of marijuana. After taking a closer look at the tackle box, he observed another small multicolored glass pipe that also had burnt residue. In addition, there were three “push rods” commonly used to clean smoking pipes. Each had burnt residue on them. Webster and Bickerstaff asked about the tackle box contents, and Phillips said the box belonged to another individual who had been fishing with them earlier. Phillips said the man let them borrow it. Both Phillips and Corder appeared to be anxious. Webster asked who owned the car they arrived in, and Corder said it was hers. She gave consent for them to search it. Bickerstaff and Webster walked with Corder and Phillips to the car which she unlocked. Phillips said he had a .22 rifle in the back seat. Webster secured the rifle which had a loaded magazine but not a chambered round. Found during the search was a container in the right rear passenger door storage compartment which contained a green leafy substance with the distinct odor of marijuana. Found in the front glove
compartment was a black bag labeled “transneb medical industries breathing quality into life.” Inside the bag were a marijuana grinder with a picture of Marilyn Monore on the top cover and a green leafy substance inside; another container with a green leafy substance; a smaller clear container with a green leafy substance; two smoking pipes with burnt residue; four plastic sandwich baggies, three of which contained what is referred to as “shake,” and one with a green leafy substance; two more push rods; one “roach clip”; a cigarillos package with one cigarillo in it; and one “WeighMax” digital scale. When asked who the bag belonged to, Corder admitted ownership. Phillips denied any of the items were his, and Corder said, “It’s mine.” Phillips said the container found in the back seat did not belong to them. Webster asked about the seating arrangement when they drove to the park, and they said James was in the back. When Webster questioned James, he denied any knowledge of the container. He did have a suspended driver’s license which Webster seized to be turned over to the Department of Public Safety. Meilani Racquel Corder, 22, of Goltry has been charged with possession of CDS within 1,000 feet of a park or school, a felony. She was also charged with a misdemeanor of unlawful possession of paraphernalia.

Cherokee woman charged with first degree burglary By Marione Martin A bench warrant has been issued for the arrest of a Cherokee woman on yet another felony charge. On Feb. 26, 2016, in Alfalfa County, Rebecca Jolynn Sanborn, 31, of Cherokee was charged with two counts of second degree burglary and one count of attempted larceny from a house, all felonies. On May 18 in Alfalfa County, Sanborn was charged with first degree burglary, a felony, and a warrant was issued for her arrest. According to court records, on March 31 about 3 p.m. Floyd Knopf, 56707 Jefferson Rd., Burlington, contacted the Alfalfa County Sheriff’s Office about a woman who entered his house while he was in the restroom. He said while he was in the restroom, someone rang the doorbell at the front door. He did not answer. Someone knocked on the back door and then rang the doorbell at the front door again. Knopf said the person then came to the back door a second time and entered the house. He said he could hear the cabinet doors in the kitchen banging as they were opened and closed. He said the cabinets are old and the magnets make a distinctive sound. Knopf said he jiggled the flush valve on the toilet to alert whoever was going through his cabinets that he was in the restroom. As he was pulling the restroom door open, a woman was pushing the restroom door open too. He said they were both startled when they saw each other. The woman asked if this was Curtis Newlin’s house. Knopf said no, that Newlin lives a couple of miles back east. The woman asked how to contact Newlin, and Knopf said to call or go by his
house. Knopf asked the woman who she was. She said she was Charlie Vap’s ex-wife. The woman then walked out the door and left, driving a dark green or grey Jeep Cherokee. Alfalfa County Deputy Gary Mast knew that Rebecca Sanborn had been charged with burglary in Cherokee for entering people’s homes uninvited. He showed Knopf a picture from social media, and Knopf identified Sanborn as the woman who had entered his home. Mast also knew that Sanborn was the ex-wife of Vap, that she lives in Cherokee, and that she drives a dark green Jeep Cherokee. After leaving the Knopf residence, Mast went to the Newlin residence where he met with Curt’s wife Jennifer. She said she did not know Sanborn and that Sanborn had never been invited to her home. The crime of first degree burglary is punishable by imprisonment for seven to 20 years.

THANKS FROM THE ENGLISH PIPER FAMILY
After 21 months of deteriorating health while in Share Convalescent Center, English Piper was transferred to Share Hospital, where he was cared for before his death by professional, smiling staff, for which his family will always be grateful. His family thanks Dr. Self, Dr. Ransom, and Dr. Rader through Telemedicine, for their expert care. His family appreciated the respect and dignity English and his family received from Marshall Funeral Home. His family also wants to thank everyone who sent their condolences with flowers, visits, cards, phone calls and charitable donations in his name.
