Burlington valedictorian seriously injured when four-wheeler strikes deer
By Yvonne Miller Barely a week prior to last Saturday night, Brandon Gosselin graduated from Burlington High School as one of its five valedictorians. Last Saturday night he and some friends were having a camp-out on a family friend’s ranch east of Kiowa, Kan. Some of the kids had gone to nearby Amorita to play basketball and were returning to the campsite, according to Barber County Sheriff Justin Rugg. The sheriff said Brandon was driving a four-wheeler on a county road east of Kiowa when a deer ran out in front of him and they collided. This happened around 11 p.m., one-half mile
east of Catalea Road, just east of TriCity Road on Driftwood Road, Rugg said. Reno Talbott, 16, of Kiowa and Jonathan Armbruster, 15, of Burlington were on the four-wheeler with Brandon. Rugg said all three were taken by Kiowa’s ambulance service to the Kiowa District Hospital. The sheriff said Talbott and Armbruster were treated and later released. However, Brandon was seriously injured and taken by EagleMed to Via Christi St. Francis Hospital in Wichita, Kan. His brother Brian Gosslin has posted constant updates on Brandon’s condition and progress on his Facebook
page. Brian reported that in the accident Brandon’s left eyebrow was ripped open and the side of his eyelid and underneath was cut, as was his left cheek. Reportedly, the eye was not damaged. He’s undergone plastic surgery to repair the damage. His brain was reportedly bruised, he was on a ventilator and underwent CT scans and more tests. Brian’s Facebook posts have told of his brother’s slow but steady improvement. Monday afternoon Brian reported that Brandon had sat up in bed a few times and was responding to people. The doctors seem to be optimistic about his condition at this point.
Speeding stop nets two arrests By Marione Martin Two individuals were charged in Alfalfa County District Court after a traffic stop on May 18. According to documents in the case, Oklahoma Highway Patrol (OHP) Trooper Brock Morgan was traveling eastbound on SH11 about 5:50 p.m. approaching the bridge construction area approximately 3.5 miles east of the Highway 64 junction. He saw a small four-door blue car traveling westbound toward him. The vehicle appeared to be speeding and his radar unit indicated the car’s speed to be 55 mph. That section of SH11 is posted at 45 mph due to construction. Morgan activated his lights and stopped the vehicle. As he approached the vehicle, Morgan saw four men inside. The driver’s window would not roll down, so he asked him to open the door. He asked for a driver’s license, but the driver said he did not have one. He produced an identification card showing him to be Gregory Alan Carson, 27, of Woodward. Morgan noticed he had a very low and raspy voice, his pupils were constricted and his eyelids were droopy. He asked Carson to take a seat in his patrol unit. Carson had gait ataxia (poor control of bodily movements) as he walked. As they talked, Morgan noticed that
Carson’s mouth was extremely dry with white, cracked lips. Carson stated he could sure use a Mountain Dew right now. His motor skills were slow and uncoordinated; he also slouched in the seat and almost fell asleep. Morgan asked Carson if he had taken anything to make him so tired, and he said he was tired from work. He said he did not do drugs and had been clean for a year. Morgan noticed that Carson kept scratching his face and arms. Morgan performed the Rhomberg test on Carson, who showed See Arrests Page 12

Burlington School hires three, accepts five resignations
By Yvonne Miller The Burlington Board of Education’s nearly three-hour May meeting last week dealt with mainly hirings and resignations. Kiley Feely was approved as band and music teacher and also librarian. Jessica Hadwiger, an Alva native who taught in the Edmond Public Schools last year, will teach first grade. Mary Ann Hathaway will be the new school secretary. The board accepted the following resignations: Halee Hogner, who is moving to Medford to teach fourth grade; Lane Pruett, who taught math at Burlington and accepted a position to teach upper-level math at the Northwest Technology Center in Alva; Connie Farris, who taught pre-Kindergarten and returns to the area she is from to teach second grade at Timberlake; and Bonnie Barnett and Shawn Stewart, both paraprofessionals. Following executive sessions to discuss the hirings and resignations, the board also voted to re-employ non-certified personnel Barbara Hudgens, Fawnda Martin and Marty Martin. All board members were present including Terry Graham, Allison Armbruster, Beth Guffy, Roger Allen and Aaron Smith. Also present were: Superintendent Glen Elliott, Principal Shane Feely and minutes clerk Jan Hill. The board discussed the pre-K program for next year. Feely said some preK parents said they would rather have half-day Pre-K instead of full day. He
said the board discussed having a juniortype kindergarten for students who want it in the mornings and then those students will join the regular kindergarten class in the afternoon. The school will offer a regular pre-K class in the afternoon. The 2012 district profile report and the dropout rate report (which was zero) were discussed by the board. They also approved a statement of support for the Oklahoma guardsmen and reservists. Items approved include encumbrances, change orders and warrants for the general, building and child nutrition funds; the April activity fund report; a contract with Alcohol & Drug Testing, Inc, for 2013-2014; and a loan agreement for food service deficits. Unused personal days were reviewed. Appropriations for the combined purpose bonds of 2013 for $1,275,000 were approved. The board voted to again offer student insurance for the 2013-2014 school year and approved the 2013-2014 technology plan. Discussion turned to plans for buildings to be constructed with the bond issue. Feely said the board discussed mainly the interior of the band room and size of shelves needed for instrument storage. That room will double as a storm shelter. Elliott’s superintendent’s report included the OSSBA/CCOSA conference in August; the new board member workshop attended by Roger Allen; the e-rate for 2013, school property and liability insurance; and legislation.
Feely said the e-rate allows Burlington School to upgrade the band-width for the Internet, which will especially help the school’s offering concurrent classes for students. The increased band-width will increase the speed for everything the school uses on the Internet, he said. In his principal’s report, Feely said the school had a positive outcome for the new semester test policy that works as a motivator for students. He also gave an update regarding the Safe School Committee.

The board met in executive session to discuss the hiring. After a return to open session, the board voted to hire Chad Hutchison for the girls’ basketball coach position and Patty Means for the third grade elementary teacher position.

Lynn Says
Some things cannot be bought By Lynn L. Martin This is a wonderful piece I found on a website. I believe the author’s name is Katherine Dart. After moving my mother into a care home, my sister and I have completed the task of clearing out Mom’s home, which is now up for sale. Only one item, a curio cabinet, remained there. It was listed on Craig’s List for $150. After no bites we reduced it to $60. I got a call that a woman was interested. Yay! I was elated by the thought that someone
From Page 2
might take that ugly sucker off our hands! I have just returned from the sale. She looked to be in her thirties and had brought a pal or relative with her to help load it, just in case I wasn’t the robust gal that I am. I liked her and she loved the tired, out of style, last-to-leave curio cabinet. She and her companion thought it was a perfect fit, “just right.” She handed me the $60. Whew. Glad she liked the old thing. I asked what it would house. Did she have a special collection all ready? “Yes. My daughter died last month. I don’t want her to just go away when we move to a house we have been trying to buy, so I will put her favorite things in
this cabinet so I can have her near me.” I hadn’t expected such sorrow and my eyes had a mind of their own. “I am so very sorry. What is (do we really “die?”) her name?” “Kylie.” We got the cabinet loaded just fine. Still emotional, I asked if I could hug the women who had touched me to my soul, and this made them both cry. I handed the money back to the mother. “I want to give this back to you with wishes that the rest of your life will be happy after such sadness.” My mother’s cabinet went to another mother who will use it to keep her daughter’s memories safe from harm. Could anyone have put a price on that?

a poor perception of time during the test. He placed Carson under arrest for no driver’s license and exceeding the speed limit. He could not perform any balance tests due to high winds from the north. Morgan went to the vehicle to conduct a probable cause search based on Carson’s indicators of drug use. He had each of the passengers step out and produce identification. Due to being outnumbered and concerns about illegal drug use, he did a pat search of each passenger. While searching Andrew Scott Rhoades, 24, of Woodward, Morgan smelled an odor of burnt marijuana about his person. He felt an object in his right front pocket. Rhoades became uncooperative. Morgan retrieved a case from Rhoades’ pocket. Rhoades stated “that’s all I have. It’s just
weed and a pipe.” Morgan looked inside and saw a large diameter short red metal pipe and a plastic baggie with a green leafy substance inside. Rhoades was taken into custody. Both Carson and Rhoades were taken to the Alfalfa County Sheriff’s Office. Rhoades was released to the jailer. Morgan contacted Lt. Ken Jordan of the OHP, who is a drug recognition expert who was off duty and happened to be in Cherokee. He arrived at the sheriff’s office. Morgan had Carson perform the standardized field sobriety test of a one leg stand. Carson showed body tremors and swayed during the test. He then asked him to perform the walk and turn and demonstrated it. He looked back and Carson had fallen asleep standing up. Morgan and Jordan
performed more tests. Morgan then read the state’s implied consent test request. Carson first agreed to the blood test, but then withdrew his consent stating “No, I’ll come back DUI anyway. I mean my blood will come back f---n’ dirty.” Carson was released to the jailer. On further inspection, the case from Rhoades’ pocket also contained a small pink baggie with wire screens for the pipe. The green leafy substance fieldtested positive for marijuana. Carson has been charged with driving under the influence, a misdemeanor, and also a traffic citation of operating a motor vehicle without a valid driver’s license. Rhoades has been charged with possession of a controlled dangerous substance and unlawful possession of paraphernalia, both misdemeanors.

Northwestern Oklahoma State University (NWOSU) where he taught education and coached gymnastics. “Doc” was also known as the voice of Ranger football and basketball games for 24 years. Wanting to continue his education, Bud took a two year sabbatical from NWOSU to attend Oklahoma State University to complete his doctorate. He received many teaching awards and was inducted into the 2000 Sports Hall of Fame at NWOSU. Bud was appreciated and loved by his students for his dry sense of humor and the respect they received from him. Many students continued to visit him long after his retirement. Bud loved the small town of Alva and teaching at a small university where he knew the students and they were not just a number. Doc retired in 1987 from NWOSU, leaving him more time to be with his family and play golf with his good friend Troy O’Hair, whose job it was to find Bud’s golf ball. The family has requested that in lieu of flowers a memorial be given in Bud’s honor through the funeral home to the NWOSU Foundation. As South Barber 3rd, 4th and 5th graders celebrate the History of Rock and Roll it wouldn't be a celebration unless “The King” appeared. Tyler Schupbach masters the famous moves of “Elvis the Pelvis,” to an appreciative crowd who whistles and cheers – glad that Elvis had not yet left the building. Vocal teacher Kiley Rieger organized the spring music program that took the younger students on a picnic with live visitors such as ladybugs and ants to stinky bugs. Then the older elementary students rocked the house all the way from the Beatles appearing on the Ed Sullivan show to the Disco Teagan McGlothlin & Miranda Thornburg have as much fun performing as Ladybugs do at a picnic and are sweeter than the biggest slice of cherry era. Lane Hess (at left) excelled in choir and band throughout high school. As a senior Lane received a I on his tuba and vocal solos at both regionals and state. He performs in the SBHS Spring Music Program with (right) Daniel Anderson and (back) Dylan Allison. Vocal teacher Kiley Feely directed the program of jr/sr high choirs that pleased the crowd with contest songs that received I ratings and with current popular hits in the mix. With lights darkened on stage, students created a thunderstorm complete with sounds of light rain intensifying to a downpour and rolling thunder and lightning strikes all by the use of sounds from syncopated clapping and jumping on the bleachers, their voices and other instruction from Mrs. Feely. It was amazing and sounded as ominous as reallife storms in this area. Photo by Yvonne Miller
With emotion Shelly Merklein presented scholarships in the name of she and Mitch's daughter Lauren Jean who would have graduated with the South Barber High School Class of 2013, but she passed away during her freshman year. This was at the high school awards assembly. Shelly told how much it's meant to watch and support Lauren's class throughout high school, but admitted this year has been difficult. Tears flowed from the eyes of most at the assembly as Shelly spoke and presented three $1000 scholarships to Lauren's classmates: Lane Hess, Keeli Hostetler and Kirsti Summers. Here she hugs Kirsti whom she described as Lauren's best friend. Photo by Yvonne Miller

Alfalfa County accepts machinery bids By Alex Cole Three bids were accepted at Tuesday’s regular Alfalfa County Commissioners meeting for pieces of heavy machinery. The first bid accepted by the commissioners was from Yellowhouse Machinery for a 2013 grader for District 1. The total amount of the grader was $211,917 with payments of $2,800.12 for 84 months. The next bid accepted was for a steel drum roller at a cost of $109,069.80 from Kirby-Smith Machinery. Payments of $1,873.18 will be made for the drum roller for 60 months. The last bid the commissioners accepted was for five semi trucks for districts 2 and 3. It was submitted by
Oklahoma City Freight Liner at a cost of $109,400 for each truck. The commissioners agreed to a payment plan of 60 months. The commissioners approved payroll warrants for payment, minutes from the last meeting, M & O warrants for payment and blanket purchase orders. It was announced during the meeting that the automatic deposit system for the county clerk’s and court clerk’s offices will be tested this month, with testing for the rest of the courthouse in June. All county employees will use automatic deposit in July. In reference to that, the commissioners approved a revision to their meeting schedule. Paying employees via automatic deposits means the commissioners will no longer have to sign each payroll check. Therefore, a meeting at the end of the month to sign those checks is no longer needed. The schedule was revised accordingly.
No action was taken on the possibility of constructing an Emergency Management Services building on land north of Cherokee City Hall. A John Deere riding lawnmower from District 3 was approved for surplus property and another John Deere mower from District 3 was approved for disposal. Also approved was the membership payment and dues from the commissioners to NACO. The cost increased to $450 a year from $400 a year for the county. A revised holding period for purchase orders has been put in place. The period was previously five business days but is now only three. The deadline for submission of the orders is 4:30 p.m. on Thursdays. Brandon Harwell of Kellpro Computer Solutions appeared to discuss new Internet options with the commissioners for the courthouse. Harwell said a survey of the building will be done to determine an estimated cost, which will be submitted at a later time. Twenty-one road crossing permits were approved for a total of $13,625 in fees. District 1 had 11 permits submitted totaling $8,500, nine permits were submitted for District 2 totaling $4,625 and District 3 had only one permit submitted with a fee of $500.

have given us more than we realize. This community has given us a foundation, a starting point, a place to thrive and grow from for the future.” She thanked everyone for supporting her class in all their activities throughout their school years. She spoke of the changes the class of 2013 witnessed and the many changes that lie ahead. Mikala told her classmates, “Embrace all these new changes and your chance at independence. Become the person you’re meant to be.” Vocal teacher Kiley Feely shared her beautiful voice with the commencement crowd, singing the Carrie Underwood favorite, “Whenever You Remember.” Valedictory Address As valedictorian, Ciera Houlton said it’s her relationship with Christ that’s taken her through any adversity and challenges in her life. With numerous moves throughout her school years, Ciera told of overcoming being the “new kid in school.” Quoting Dr. Seuss, Ciera told her classmates, “You have brains in your head, and you have feet in your shoes; you can steer yourself in any direction your choose.” She urged them to focus on the road that lies ahead, not the road that lies behind them. “There is a reason the windshield is bigger than the rearview mirror,” Ciera said. With a love of rodeo, which she’s excelled in, Ciera told how that competition forced her to block out distractions in order to have a successful run. Ciera is big sis to two adorable blonde twin toddlers. She admitted that she wasn’t thrilled to learn her parents were expecting – especially twins – and to make it worse, girls. But those jealous feelings were short-lived. “From the first time I saw them, I felt happy and proud,” Ciera said. She finally realized, “My parents love all their children; just like God loves all of us (His children) equally.” She added, “I now consider my little sisters one of the greatest blessings in my life.” As the class of 2013 begins a new chapter of their lives, Ciera told her classmates, “Our family, faith and friends will offer guidance as we make choices. However, ultimately the choice is ours.”

Angle-Rugg reminds BHS graduates ‘you are not special’ By Yvonne Miller From the 16 graduates of Burlington High School’s (BHS) class of 2013, five were valedictorians and one salutatorian. Family and friends filled Burlington’s auditorium Thursday evening for commencement where 1998 BHS grad Shannon Angle-Rugg spoke, reminding students that although they’ve been successful in high school they enter a level playing field in the big game of life. An Oklahoma State University graduate, Angle-Rugg is an accountant and director of finance with Koch Industries. She serves on advisory and other boards,
is a recruiter and volunteer. She and her husband Damon Rugg reside in Wichita, Kan. She told graduates, “You are fortunate to be part of a community who supported you every step of the way. They instilled in you faith, values and beliefs to get you through life.” Angle-Rugg advised, “a strong work ethic will get you far.” Those gifts have given graduates a tool box that she said they should fill all their life. “Your diplomas are the same except for your name – the only difference is your name,” she told graduates.
“You are not special,” she said – reminding graduates they’ve been cared for, fed and fawned over, featured in area newspapers, “but you are not special.” “As an accountant I like to prove things by numbers,” she said. Making her point, she said there are some 3.8 million graduates of which 37,000 are valedictorians. “There’s over 7,000 people on this earth just like you. There is not a center to the universe so you can’t be it,” she said. “I hope you realize how little you know now. Allow others to guide you – mentor you. You must be a life learner or the world will pass you by. Read. Learn something new every day. Any employer expects it and so will yours.” “Challenge yourself. Exhibit humility. Today is just the beginning,” AnSee Burlington Page 38

Jim Parker elected to Kiowa Hospital Board; Schrock retains board seat By Yvonne Miller Only one board seat changed at the annual meeting of the Kiowa District Hospital Board held May 21 at the Kiowa Community Building. Two seats were up for election, as those terms had expired. One was held by Robert Armbruster, who had said he would not seek reelection. The other seat was held by Lori Schrock, who had also said publicly she would not seek another term as she and her family are moving to Hawaii. Board President Zack Odell personally thanked Armbruster for his “invaluable guidance and counsel” the past six years and Schrock for her six years of
service and “guiding us through trials and tribulations with her accounting experience.” Then Odell called for nominations to fill Armbruster’s seat. Jim Parker was nominated and won the seat by acclamation. Parker is a semi-retired pharmacist who works at Prescriptions Plus in Kiowa, Kan., and other out-of-town pharmacies as needed. He and his wife Bobbie reside in Kiowa. Both are Kiowa natives. Then Odell called for nominations to fill the seat held by Schrock. At that time, Schrock said that she’s served on the board for six years and was part of the Friends of the Kiowa District Hospital and Manor Foundation for two years. “I’ve seen the work and time commitment,” Schrock said. “I’m willing to serve again.” When asked from the floor if she was still moving out of state, Schrock said that yes they are “co-locat-
ing so I can make this work.” Chantae Simpson was nominated for the seat from the floor. Simpson said that she and her husband Roger are business owners – Simpson’s Hardware and Simpson’s Welding. They’ve live in Kiowa many years and raised their four children here. “I understand business and financing,” Simpson said. She added that she’s served on Barber County Economic Development and on the Barber County Public Building Commission, an arm of the county commissioners that was involved in the financing process to construct the new hospital. Fifty-five district patrons signed in at the annual meeting. Of those voting by secret ballot, 30 voted for Schrock and 25 voted for Simpson. Odell first counted the ballots out loud in front of the crowd. Then he had the auditor and attorney review the ballots for accuracy.

gle-Rugg said. “From now on your life is what you make it.” At Koch, she’s interviewed hundreds of college graduates. “You are replaceable. In the end it is up to you to define your own future. Be excellent. Do what you do simply because you love it. Don’t quit when it gets hard.” She advised reading and learning “as a matter of self-respect.” “Do something every day that scares you. Face the `F’ word: failure. Pick yourself up. Put your cell phone down and pick up the phone and actually talk. Write a letter; it’s becoming a lost art.” “Keep filling up your tool box; it’s an important asset. When you walk out the door of BHS, get busy,” Angle-Rugg said. “Selflessness is the best gift you can give yourself.” Valedictorians and Salutatorian Comments Principal Shane Feely presented each of the five valedictorians and salutatorian with their awards. The class valedictorians are Katelyn Garvie, Brandon Gosselin, Lane Newlin, Tiffany Rieger and Jon Reid Ross. Salutatorian is Christopher Guffy. Each addressed the commencement crowd briefly. Christopher Guffy said he still remembers wondering as a pre-K student “why my mom left me with all these strange people.” Then recounting fun memories from each year of school, he expressed the class motto, “Life is full of tears, smiles and memories; the tears dry, the smiles fade, but the memories last forever.” He described the moment as sad and happy and thanked everyone for their support. Katelyn Garvie thanked family, faculty and friends for being with the class through joys and struggles. She teased her younger sister Sarah about the start

time of school and said now she will have to ride to school with mom. Katelyn quoted Jeremiah 29:11: “For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” It’s that scripture Katelyn said, “makes me realize when things aren’t going my way God has good things planned for me. God will show me the way.” Brandon Gosselin shared humor as he predicted what each of his classmates would become in the future. He thanked everyone at the school including the custodians and longtime secretary Jan Hill, who is retiring. Brandon next thanked his basketball coach Randy Turney, saying, “I’ve been so blessed to have you. You are a huge influence in my life.” He thanked his family “for dragging me to church” because he said it helped him build a relationship with God. “Thank you, Lord.” He told classmates to “pull your way through adversity when life pulls you down.” Lane Newlin described Burlington as “an amazing, supportive community.” He said his time at Burlington High School couldn’t have been better, “from attending National FFA Convention to playing basketball in the Big House.” Lane thanked each of his classmates as he recalled funny moments with them. He suggested his classmates set high
goals, focus on what’s important and never forget their roots. Tiffany Rieger referred to Burlington as having “honest and God-fearing people.” She thanked everyone for the attention and support they gave her. She specifically thanked her FFA adviser Mr. Bradshaw “for pushing me out of my comfort zone.” Tears welled when she spoke of “Grandma Bert.” “Mom and Dad, you’ve been my rock.” More tears came when Tiffany thanked her basketball coach Kirsten Pruett for helping her on her Lady Elk journey the last four years. “I look up to you so much,” Tiffany told Coach Pruett. As she concluded, Tiffany thanked “my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.” Then with a chuckle, Tiffany said, “When I ever got called into the principal’s office (her uncle Shane Feely) it was usually to see if I could babysit!” Jon Reid Ross thanked his parents and others for everything. He said, “I want everyone to thank a veteran for their service.” He told of visiting Arlington Cemetery. “Seeing the white crosses and hearing the 21-gun salute –it’s something I’ll never forget.” Jon Reid challenged his classmates to “go ahead and make it happen.” He told them to follow the words of the final cartoon of his favorite comic strip “Calvin and Hobbs:” “It’s a magical world – let’s go exploring.”
