Freedom Gates Boys Ranch hamburger feed and auction Sunday By Yvonne Miller Teenage boys who don’t have a bright future are receiving the love and mentoring they need to turn their lives around and see success and happiness. That’s happening in little Hazelton, Kansas, at the Freedom Gates Boys Ranch (FGBR) – thanks to houseparents Dennis and Nancy Blake, who’ve been dedicated to the boys for over five years and a board of caring individuals led by President Michael Simpson. Simpson said FGBR is expanding their facilities so they can eventually take in more boys. You may have seen an article recently in the Newsgram about the World Mission Builders (WMB) volunteering their work to renovate an older home donated to FGBR in Hazelton into additional space to house boys.
Simpson said WMB took the project to about 80 percent completion. Now FGBR volunteers are finishing the roughly other 20 percent of the house. This is so it will be ready to house four boys by the time school starts. There is a simple, delicious, fun way you can help with finishing. This coming Sunday evening, July 10, you can go to the Kiowa Community Building and eat a grilled hamburger meal with all the fixins’ at no charge. The hamburgers will be served starting at 6 p.m. You are encouraged to make a donation and/or stay for the auction, which starts at 7 p.m. You can still donate to the auction. Take your donation to Simpson’s Hardware Store on Main Street in Kiowa this week. One of the most unique
donated items is a 30-minute plane flight to see an aerial view of Barber County with pilot Brandon Farney, a farmer who is also Kiowa’s mayor. Some of the other items donated so far are tools, tool kits, antiques, art, Americana items, ammo, windchimes, hair products, jewelry, baked goods and more. Several entities are donating the food to help the FGBR fundraiser be successful. Simpson referred to the project being completed as “The Blue House.” He said he’ll explain that name Sunday night at the auction. As this project nears completion, Simpson said, “I keep telling myself that our job is not building houses, but it’s building boys,” Simpson said.

By Yvonne Miller “It’s fortunate a little town this size can continue to put on a such a great Fourth of July celebration,” Sam Sterling said. Referring to Hardtner’s fireworks that are as fabulous as American patriotism is in the heartland, Sterling said, “I think ours is one of the biggest in the area.” Sam is one of the members of the Sterling family who has kept Hardtner’s Fourth of July celebration going since his
grandfather Ed Sterling started it 58 years ago. While announcing the parade, Sterling said no one can remember a foggy morning with temperatures in the 70s on the Fourth of July like it was Monday morning at the start of Hardtner’s parade. A long line of firetrucks lined the parade route as firefighters were honored by a cheering crowd for all they did in the Anderson Fire that happened earlier this year and was the
largest wild grass fire in Kansas history. At the end of the parade, a moment of silence for personal prayers and thoughts for all those loved ones lost in the last year brought a tear to many. The parade featured many floats, one of which carried the “Little Miss Firecracker” Lexie Lohmann and “Lil Firecracker” Tennessee Cook.

Winner of the float contest was “Local Boys Entertainment” from Burlington with the theme “We Support Our Troops.” They won prize money of $400. Second place float and $300 prize money went to Stateline 4-H Club with their “Small, Town, Big Blast” theme. The third place float winner was Syd Sterling with her hilarious Donald Trump float featuring supportive Trump signs and one that said, “America’s Gone to Pot” complete with toilets. That won her $200. The fourth place float was the Hardtner Library that said, “Little Library, Big Bang.” Kellie Courson found the medallion after the first clue in the annual Medallion Hunt. Jake Corr, age 12, of Kiowa had the winner in the turtle race. Sam Sterling said the White Elephant Auction brought in over $10,000 causing them to “about break even.” He said that is the goal of Hardtner’s Chamber of Commerce – to break even and for everyone to come and enjoy the day in Hardtner for free. In a pause of the fireworks exploding in the sky, “Local Boys Entertainment” from Burlington who did the sound for the festivities played a video of President Ronald Reagan speaking. One of President Reagan’s quotes made those listening closely realize the absolute importance of freedom. His quote was, “Above all, we must realize that no arsenal, or no weapon in the arsenals of the world, is so formidable as the will and moral courage of free men and women. It is a weapon our adversaries in today’s world do not have.”

Lack of communication causes lots of bad things: boyfriends/girlfriends break up, marriage goes on the rocks, airplanes crash and stores go out of business.
We can help on communicating with your store customers in a big way . . . we mail the Newsgram to every address in three counties every week. No other media comes close to that depth of saturation. Call 580-327-2200 to hear some ad pricing.

An example of a tremendous benefit we offer when photographing weddings. Whether our customer orders video or not, we voluntarily shoot it for backup. That way, if a still photo fails, we can go to the video for a still frame to replace the shot. Above, a back camera still frame with the bride and Dad in the middle of the processional. At left, is an earlier frame from a front video camera showing part of the wedding party processional. At bottom, is a traditional still camera shot. Later, if the customer decides they want an edited video of their wedding, we’ve got the raw footage. Many times they’ll order the job at their first anniversary. FYI, editing a multi-camera video of all wedding events usually takes 16 work hours. So we don’t do it on a whim. But we are not aware of other studios who offer such a great backup.
