Robert Hyde remembered At Barber County Rodeo

By Yvonne Miller At the Barber County Rodeo in Hardtner, Kan., Saturday night, Garrett Lohmann led a riderless horse into the arena with Robert Hyde’s cowboy hat on the saddle horn – an arena where he worked the chutes for years. Lynn Says

Cute wedding RSVP reply form goes viral By Lynn L. Martin There may be some non-computer types who’ve not come across the phrase “going viral.” The phrase means that some joke, photo or document has spread over the Internet like wild fire, reaching far more readers than the authors intended. I know from my experience in the wedding business that couples are frequently frustrated because they send out RSVP cards for people to return so they can make an estimate of how much food to prepare and how many tables to place. The frustration occurs when people forget to return the cards with either a “yes” or “no.” A creative Chicago-area couple said they wanted to show that their country club wedding reception wouldn’t be a stuffy affair, so they designed an RSVP card that reflected their personalities. Katie Kerr and Chris Sabino’s clever invitation for their September nuptials called for guests to choose from a list of funny reasons why they would or would not be able to attend the wedding. Here are the choices on the list: Yes! I will be attending because: • Two words: free booze. • I’m in your wedding party, idiot. Wait, is this optional? • I plan on sneaking off during the toasts to play a quick round. • I would never dream of missing it! After all, knowing the Kerr/Sabino family (please circle one), this should be a night full of must see fun/drama/ridiculous dancing (circle one). No. I won’t be attending because: • I’m lame. On a scale of one to ten, my lameness would be in the 9.5 to 9.8 range. • I’ll be watching the Cubs win the World Series.

(Edit: these options are meant to be circumstances that could actually happen.) • I will be visiting, uh, Yemen. Yeah, Yemen. But it’s a secret trip. So if you ask anyone, they will have no clue what you’re talking about. • I don’t know who you people are or how you got my address. Leave me alone! (Oh, and congrats on your upcoming nuptials.) “Originally we had thought about doing some unique storybook-like in-

vitations, but they just weren’t in the budget. This was the next best way we could think of to get our personalities across in the invites,” Kerr told the Daily News. “We wanted people to open the invitations, laugh, have fun interacting with them and say ‘that’s so Katie and Chris!’” “We think this will be an awesome story we get to tell our future children,” Kerr said. The bride-to-be, a social media manager, posted a picture of the RSVP card on Reddit and it took on a life of its own. The picture received a couple hundred upvotes – the Reddit equivalent of Facebook likes – and was picked up by numerous media outlets. “We’ve had distant cousins and friends tell us they saw it on the news in Montreal, Texas, Kentucky, Philadelphia, the U.K. and a bunch of other places,” Kerr said. “I never could have dreamed that our goofy wedding RSVPs would have drawn so much attention.” Kerr and Sabino are set to be married on Sept. 21 and she said they are a little nervous that their actual wedding day won’t live up to the hype and excitement caused by the invitations. “But we really are surprised, humbled and having fun with all of the commotion,” Kerr added. “We know we are going to have the coolest wedding scrapbook, and we think this will be an awesome story we get to tell our future children.”

words, hugs and a belt buckle engraved with “In loving memory of Robert Hyde.” Robert’s proud mother Tommie Hyde was in the stands snapping pictures. When asked about the event, Marci said, “It really touched me when Darrin Alexander said, `You’ll always have a rodeo family.’ It was quite an honor – I could hear Rob saying, `You didn’t have to do this much for me.’” Marci posted pics of Robert at previous rodeos and wrote the following message on her Facebook page prior to the rodeo, “As the days approach, I have to admit this is one of the `first’ events without Robert that is `hitting me hard.’ Robert took a lot of pride in helping at the rodeo. I heard many cowboys through the years tell him that he was one of the best chute men they ever had. Yes, just

nod your head, and RawHyde was going to make sure the lever was tripped at the right time. Dalton Black asked who was going to do Robert’s job this year. I got a tear in my eye and thought, `cowboys and angels.’” Marcy said her husband was on the fair board over 20 years because she remembers he was already on the board when they dated in 1992. She said the buckle is “really special” and Bayli plans to wear it when showing animals. Marci always seems to put on a positive face to the public since her husband’s untimely death. When asked how, she replied, “I get through it because of my faith. If God brought me to it – he’ll get me through it. It helps that Bayli is so strong. It’s like having a little Robert beside me.”

Border Line Auditions Sunday and Monday for `Radio Gals’ Bob Gilliland to direct BLT Production for first time By Yvonne Miller Calling all actors and actresses who have a love of music, both vocal and instrumental! This coming Sunday and Monday, Aug. 4 and 5, from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m., Border Line Theatre will hold auditions for its fall production at the Kiowa Community Building in Kiowa, Kan. Show dates are Oct. 26 and 27 and Nov. 2 and 3. The production is “Radio Gals,” a musical comedy. The show calls for a seven-member cast. Don’t let the name “gals” discourage musically talented males who don’t mind dressing in drag. When Border Line opened its 11th season with this show in 2005, boisterous Chris Stinnett brilliantly played one of “Swindell Sisters.” The plot centers around a retired music teacher who receives a radio transmitter as a gift and begins broadcasting as radio station “WGAL.” With the help of the seemingly innocent “Hazelnuts,” the radio signal of their colorful performance in which they sell “Horehound Compound” unknowingly reaches far beyond their small Arkansas town. capacities through his life of service to Christ (including being elected to deacon emeritus). It was also in the church that he saw a beautiful young lady in the choir. Ila later became his wife before he went into the service of our country. Gerald was drafted into the army in April 1953 during the Korean conflict. While in basic training at Fort Bliss, Texas, he was selected for leadership training and upon completion served overseas in Germany. When he was not on military manoeuvres they travelled Europe. He reached the rank of corporal and received the National Defence Service Medal. He excelled in the military and it became one of his most cherished memories. Upon coming home he and Ila took up the family business of farming and it was his passion. He had his hands full with five children but always had time to invent and build items to keep them busy. He also spent a lot of time with his children and others volunteering for 4-H, FFA and various other school activities. One of the most amazing things he did was invent and build ways to make farming better. One invention that he made years later became a common tool of the trade. Gerald was an incredible man and is a continuing role model of Christianity and church service, love of family and friends, patriotism and community service, and hard work and dedication to the career of farming. Gerald touched the lives of many people with his smile, compassion and generosity, and maintained his passion for living life to the fullest all the way to the end. Funeral services will be Friday, July 26, at 10 a.m. at First Christian Church in Cherokee with Rev. Tom Stanley and Dr. Gerald Wessels, Jr., officiating. Burial will follow at Short Springs Cemetery on Highway 64 near Alva. Visitation will be Thursday, July 25, from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. with family present from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Arrangements are by Lanman Funeral Home, Inc., of Cherokee. Memorials may be made to the Midway Class or CWF of the Cherokee First Christian Church through the funeral home. Condolences may be shared with the family at www.lanmanmemorials.

Brett Smith appointed president, chief executive of Freedom State Bank

The Freedom State Bank has announced the appointment of Brett Smith as its new president and chief executive officer. Smith officially assumed responsibilities on July 27, succeeding Wesley Nixon, who has stepped down for health reasons. Smith began working part-time at the Freedom State Bank in 1976 while he was still in high school and began working full-time after receiving his bachelor of science in agricultural economics (marketing and business) degree from Oklahoma State University in 1982. He has been involved in all phases of the business and most recently has served as executive vice president. In this position, Smith had major responsibilities in many areas, including business development, loans, regulatory safety and soundness and compliance management, bank policy development

and oversight of the modernization of the bank’s business operations to enhance customer services and convenience such as Internet banking. When Smith received the appointment, he expressed gratitude to the board of directors for their confidence in him and pledged that he would ensure the bank continues to be a highly respected corporate citizen and business leader in the Freedom community. He went on to say that one of the bank’s primary goals will be to maintain and further improve its reputation as a friendly and outstanding place to do business. Finally, Smith expressed his appreciation to the board for honoring his predecessor, Nixon, by designating Nixon as president and chief executive officer emeritus. Smith is a past five-term president of the Freedom Chamber of Commerce and continues to serve on its board of directors. He serves as president of the Freedom Educational Foundation and served many years as a Freedom representative for the Woods County Economic Development Committee. He worked with his fellow citizens in the intensive effort to help Freedom attain its status as Oklahoma’s smallest “certified city.” Smith is a retired Freedom

volunteer firefighter and currently serves on several economic development, tourism and local development committees. He is a member of the Freedom Christian Church. He enjoys managing his family’s small cow/calf operation that adjoins the Cimarron River just east of Freedom. Smith and his wife Terry have three grown children, Gretchen, Ryan and Jared, and two young grandsons and are expecting three more grandchildren very soon, including a set of twins. The Freedom State Bank was founded by Smith’s great-grandfather, David H. Powers, in 1919. When Powers died in 1934, his son, James G. (Jim) Powers, became president and kept the bank open through the Great Depression. In 1954, Nixon, James Powers’ brotherin-law and long-time bank employee, became president and chief executive officer. As majority stockholder, Jim Powers continued to serve as chairman of the bank’s board of directors until his death in 1988. The Freedom State Bank remains a family-owned bank with the heirs of Jim Powers and Wesley Nixon serving as directors and continues its dedication toward honest care and concern for its customers.

Cherokee shooting range approved

2013 Barber County Cattlemen’s Tour

By Alex Cole During a regular board meeting on Monday, the Alfalfa County commissioners approved an agreement with the city of Cherokee for a shooting range that will be located on city property southeast of town. The city will provide the land, maintenance, and funding for all required insurance. The agreement also stated that the commissioners will have authority to construct buildings on the property if necessary. Also during the meeting, Kevin George of Vining Community Church in Jet conferred with the board about closing a section of road north of the church. George said he assumed the road had already been closed until recently, and the church board has requested the commissioners close it. The request was approved when Commissioner Doug Murrow made a motion to close the section of road. After approval of minutes from the last meeting, payroll warrants, M & O warrants, blanket purchase orders and road crossing permits, the board approved a materials request form for a bridge in Murrow’s district. It came with a cost of $79,908.07. Approval was also made for a steel beam transfer form for the Mesa Creek overflow also in Murrow’s district. Fifteen road crossing permits were submitted to the commissioners totaling $17,750. District 1 held 11 of the permits at a cost of $10,000; District 2 had three permits at a total of $5,500; District 3 had one permit submitted at $2,250.

Folger completes LADC training

Brandon Folger of Helena recently completed the Leadership, Development and Assessment Course (LDAC) at Fort Lewis, Wash. LDAC is the most important training event for an Army ROTC cadet. All cadets go to LDAC in the summer between

their MS III (Junior) and MS IV (Senior) years. The 30-day camp incorporates a wide range of subjects designed to develop and evaluate leadership ability. The challenges are rigorous and demanding, both mentally and physically. They test intelligence, common sense, ingenuity and stamina. These challenges provide a new perspective on a cadet’s ability to perform exacting tasks and make difficult decisions under demanding conditions. The camp places each cadet in a variety of leadership positions, many of which simulate stressful combat situations. In each position, cadets are evaluated by platoon tactical officers and noncommissioned officers. In addition to demonstrating their leadership ability, cadets must meet established standards in physical fitness, weapons training, communication, combat patrols and additional military skills. Cadets must excel at camp to be competitive for Army commissions. Folger is a 2010 graduate of Ringwood High School and will graduate in May 2014 from Oklahoma State University with a bachelor of science in history degree. Upon graduation Folger will commission as a 2nd lieutenant in the U.S. Army. He is the son of Fred and Janette Folger.

Kiowa Hospital plans `Jeans and Gems’ dinner By Yvonne Miller The Kiowa District Hospital (KDH) board held its July meeting last Thursday with board member Lori Schrock participating via video chat. Schrock could be seen and heard and fully participate from her home in Hawaii. Other members present were Zack Odell, Jim Parker, Robert Stark and Dan Lukins. Also present were Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Aldeen “Van” Vandeveer; Chief Financial Officer Janell Harbaugh; Dr. Paul Wilhelm; Patty McNamar, DNP; Manor Director of Nurses (DON) Nicole Tronsgard and assistant DON Jan Smith; PR Director Brenna May; Foundation Director Judy Schrock; and MW Builders New Hospital Project Manager Jay Jernigan. Vandeveer announced personnel changes. He said hospital DON Tammy Blake submitted her resignation July 19. RN Kathy Winters is the interim DON, he said. The CEO said Rhett Hickert was business office manager and was recently promoted to human resources director. The business office manager position is not yet filled. Vandeveer said they hired a physical therapy director. She is Lana Smith, a licensed physical therapist (PT). Her husband J.D. is an athletic trainer for Kansas Orthopedic and can do his job from his new Kiowa location. They have a son, age three. The family moves to Kiowa from Towanda. Todd Reeves will continue his role as a PT assistant at Kiowa. This move replaces Kiowa Hospital’s relationship with an outof-town licensed physical therapist. Amy Allen is the new dietary manager at the Manor. The manor seeks a few certified nurse aides.

Jeans and Gems Dinner and Auction Sept. 28 On behalf of the Friends of KDH and Manor Foundation, Brenna May said they’ll host a “Jeans and Gems” steak dinner Saturday, Sept. 28, at Kiowa’s Community Building. Tickets are $40 each or by the table. More details will soon be available. Contact May at the hospital for tickets. The evening will feature a live auction and a silent auction. It’s a fundraiser for the foundation, which is committed to raising dollars for gap funding for the bricks and mortar portion of the new Kiowa District Hospital and Clinic. As foundation Chairman Schrock explained in the July newsletter, the “Where Community and Care Come Together” capital campaign passed the first $1 million mark in donations and pledges. Schrock said the foundation is required to raise an additional $173,688 by Oct. 1 to stay on track to reach its fundraising goal. Update on New Hospital Construction Project Manager Jernigan gave a construction update on the new hospital. He said structural steel is delivered. Concrete drives will go in soon. Interior walls are going and up and room layout will soon be recognizable. Gas lines are being finished. May said after a poll was taken, a brownish-gray color was selected for the outside of the building that ties into the brick. The above-ground safe room and tornado shelter was the first structure to go vertical. June Hospital and Manor Statistics and Financials At the end of June the combined balance sheets of the hospital and manor show total assets and liabilities at $3,535,558. Hospital admissions were down noticeably in June. Total days of acute and

swingbed care totaled only 25, which is the lowest month of the year. That made about $50,000 less patient revenue. Total outpatient visits were 434, which is about average. PT visits were second highest of the year at 50. Total clinic visits were 326, which is average. Lab visits were steady at 197 as were emergency room visits at 55 and various tests in radiology. The hospital’s net income from operations was a loss of $107,839. With the addition of mainly tax dollars totaling $78,102, the hospital had a loss of $29,737. The manor’s resident census for June averaged 22. The manor had total operating revenue of $97,264. Operating expenses were $133,857. That makes a loss from operations of $36,593. With the addition of $5063 mainly tax money, the manor’s loss for June was $31,530. Year-to-date, the manor has lost $224,679; the hospital $62,868. That makes the combined loss $287,547. Net patient accounts receivable are $347,165. Goodno said they’ve received all but $89,000 of tax revenue from the county. The hospital district awaits about $400,000 from the Medicare Cost Report Settlement. Cash on hand for the district was $508,000 at the end of June. Other Hospital Business Board approved purchase of an EKG machine, cost not to exceed $10,000. The annual tax budget public hearing is Aug. 16 at 8 a.m. Goodno presented board members with a quarterly update of the district’s three-year capital budget update. The board met in executive session nearly three hours to discuss the monthly risk management/quality assurance (RM/ QA) report, non-elected personnel and contract/legal. Following executive session, the board approved the addendum to Vandeveer’s contract and the RM/QA report.
