Train derails north of Waynoka By Leslie Nation A train carrying various consumer products derailed north of Waynoka at 7:30 a.m. Sunday. A Burlington Northern Santa Fe (BNSF) train derailed near NS 300 and Comanche Road, about two miles north and one mile east of Waynoka. Joe Faust, director of public relations for BNSF, said no injuries were reported, nor any hazardous materials spilled. the wreckage. The train was carrying mixed freight heading westbound to Los Angeles. A total of 40 rail cars derailed going 56 mph in an area that had a maximum speed limit of 60 mph. Faust said an investigation is ongo-
ing into what caused the train to derail. “I don’t want to speculate at this time, but we have a full investigation going,” said Faust. According to Faust the railroad should be opened by 2:30 p.m. Monday.
Helena man charged with stalking By Marione Martin A Helena man has been charged with stalking his estranged wife. On Aug. 9 in Alfalfa County District Court, Kerry Ordell Gregg, 40, was charged with stalking in violation of a court order, a felony. He has also been charged with a misdemeanor of violating a protective order. Gregg had been charged on July 9 with assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, a felony, and domestic abuse – assault and battery, a misdemeanor. Those charges followed a report by Shawna Kae Gregg alleging that Kerry
physically assaulted her and threatened her with a gun. Following that incident Shawna Gregg filed a protective order against Kerry Gregg on July 9. According to documents on file in the stalking case, on Aug. 4, a friend of Shawna Gregg contacted the Alfalfa County Sheriff’s office to report that Shawna called her saying Kerry was outside her home and wouldn’t leave. Chromebook Technology Presentation South Barber’s Technology Director Luke MacKinney and his student team members Paige Koblitz and Bryce Roberts (member Morgan Myers was absent) gave a presentation about the new Chromebook pilot program at the high school. Sophomores through seniors will have Chrome computers, which provide rapid access to a world of educational resources. The devices are very slim and weigh about two pounds. MacKinney explained that no software needs to be downloaded; instead, educational apps are used. The remarkably low-cost Chromebooks were designed to be used while connected to the Web. Because of that, the computers’ functioning is driven by apps that reside on the Web, rather than traditional software such as word processing programs that are loaded onto the computer itself. Chromebooks’ operating system is called Chrome OS and includes cloud storage and multiple layers of security. After trying out a Chromebook this summer, Bryce said, “You usually have to log in to a computer at school. You just plug into these for instant access. There’s no excuses, like you didn’t have a computer or your work was lost on the computer. There’s no need for time-consuming training.” Paige said tests can be taken on Chromebooks and automatically graded, saving classroom time. Students can collaborate on the same lesson on their Chromebooks. They can create and share their own content. MacKinney said students don’t have to wait – they get instantaneous feedback. Parenting through separation and divorce

Judd – Koch announce engagement Jo Decker and Sid Judd have announced the engagement of their daughter Emily Judd to Ethan Koch, son of Guy and Molly Koch. Emily is a 2010 graduate of Walkaway High School and is currently a senior majoring in ministry at Mid-American Christian University in Moore. She
has one sister, April Simpson, and is the granddaughter of Roy and Loretta Decker. Ethan is a 2011 graduate of Walkaway High School and is currently a junior majoring in journalism at the University of Oklahoma in Norman. He has three sisters, Tara Johnson, Mandie Briant and Shawnna Dean, and is the grandson of Lola Koch. The wedding will be held at the Generations Church in Waynoka on Dec. 20. The couple plan to make their home in Oklahoma City.
Divorcing parents are often faced with many new problems during this difficult time for the entire family. Although their marriage is ending, their role as parents continues through their lives. To help make this transition easier, Northwest Family Services Inc. staff member Nicole Martens, M.S., LPC, will be teaching a “Parenting Through Separation and Divorce” class Monday night, Aug. 19. The class will be in Fairview from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. at Northwest Technology Center southwest of Fairview. To enroll, please call 580-744-1248. Participants must pre-enroll; the class will be canceled if there is inadequate pre-enrollment. Class costs $30 per person. This class was designed at the request of the courts to help divorcing couples understand the problems their children may experience during and after a divorce or separation. It will fulfill the court order for all divorcing parents. Parents will learn skills to parent cooperatively, even though they are divorced. In the class, parents will learn how to effectively communicate with their children and with their former spouse. They will practice reflective listening skills and will study various active communication techniques and nonverbal communications. They will also practice workable negotiation styles for dealing with conflict and rules for effective expressions. Recognizing and avoiding “Pain Games” is another topic. Parents will learn to recognize and cease games like I-Spy, Set-up, and Wishbone that are likely to hurt the children. Class members will also discuss various options for parenting, such as joint custody and mediation. In 2013, the “Parenting Through Separation and Divorce” class will be taught monthly on the third Monday.

The least used parts of the body By Lynn L. Martin There are several tales that can be found on the Internet telling of a church’s new preacher playing the role of a homeless man in the town where he is going to be filling the pulpit. It’s a good Bible lesson whether precisely accurate or not. In mid-2013, the newly appointed pastor of the Sango United Methodist Church in Clarksville, Tenn., spent four and a half days living in the streets in the guise of a homeless man. He then transformed back into his role as a pastor as he delivered a sermon. In a dream, God told Willie Lyle that he needed to live on the streets of Clarksville as a homeless and hungry person. He challenged Willie to experience first-hand just what is was like to have nothing – no home, no money, no friends, no food on even a semiregular basis. No nothing. Pastor’ Willie’s wife, Suzette, dropped him off in downtown Clarks-
ville early Monday morning, June 17, and he lived on the street through the morning of Friday, June 21. In those four and one-half days, he learned a great deal about the homeless, the working poor who face hunger daily and those in need of spiritual and emotional help. It was not comfortable. Early morning on June 23, Willie lay under a tree on the church lawn covered up by a big overcoat. He still had not shaved or combed his hair. He wondered how many people would approach him and offer him food or a place to sit inside an air-conditioned room, or to just see how they could help. Twenty people spoke to him and offered some type of assistance. While he preached, his daughterin-law cut his hair and his daughter helped shave off his scruffy beard. He changed shoes, and beneath the overcoat he was wearing his Sunday clothes. He put on a tie and his suit coat, all the while continuing to preach his message. Before the 200 people gathered that morning, he went from looking like a homeless person to the new pastor of the congregation. The sermon title was “The Least Used Parts of the Body” and is based on Corinthians 12:12-15. According to Pastor Lyle, “Often the least used parts of the body are the ones that mean the most, like our hearts and minds. We need to understand that there are no small or least used parts in the body
of Christ. “Too many of us want to serve God one hour each week. That doesn’t cut it. That’s not God’s plan.” Another man’s anecdote similar to the above story is in an episode from the opening of his book, “In his steps: what would Jesus do?” a best selling 1897 book by Charles Monroe Sheldon. The book is still influential a hundred years later being the source for the frequently used phrase, “What would Jesus do.”

Barretts celebrate 50th anniversary Roy and Helen Barrett of Alva will celebrate 50 years of marriage this week. Alvin “Roy” Barrett and Helen Shaw exchanged vows on Aug. 16, 1963, in the First Assembly of God church of Ulysses, Kan. The bride’s brother, Rev. Eugene Shaw, officiated the beginning of the wedding while her father, the late Rev. Jesse Shaw, escorted her down the aisle. After giving the bride to the groom, the bride’s father finished the ceremony. Roy retired in 1993 after 32 years working for Panhandle Eastern Pipe Line Company. Helen retired from her full-time position at the Alva Review-Courier/Newsgram in 2009. She currently works for the Alva Public Schools as accompanist for the choir
classes at both the Alva Middle School and Alva High School. The Barretts have three children and nine grandchildren: Rev. Greg Barrett his wife Tica of Marco Island, Fla., and their children Jesse, Marissa and Madeline; Rev. Rick Barrett and his wife Chondra of Eldorado, Kan., and their children Tayler, Kayla and Chase; daughter Marissa Hofen and her husband Brian of Dacoma, and their children Madison, Braden and Brooks. By Alex Cole Bids for a new tanker were opened during a regular meeting held by the Alfalfa County commissioners on Monday. The accepted bid was received from Frankford Volunteer Fire Company at a price of $80,000. They are charging $4,995 for shipping costs. Bids were also opened for a new building at the Alfalfa County Fairgrounds, but a decision will not be made until the next regular meeting. The first bid opened was sent by Heritage Construction of Stillwater. They sent a lump sum price of almost $2.8 million and an estimated completion time of 330 days. The next bid was sent by Henson Construction of Enid. Their lump sum price was just over $2.6 million, and the estimated completion time was 365 days. Hembree & Hodgson Construction sent the board a bid totaling just under $2.8 million. Reeder General out of Oklahoma City sent a bid of just over $2.6 million with an estimated completion time of 300 days. Miller Tippens, also from Oklahoma City, sent the commissioners a bid of more than $2.8 million with an estimated completion time of 300 days. Every bid included alternate bid items that came with varying price deductions or additions. Commissioner Doug Murrow made a motion to table the agenda item until Monday, Aug. 19. Students within four blocks Obituary of any school building must walk there to catch bus By Leslie Nation All in-town students who live within a four-block radius of a school building will have to walk to that building in order to travel by bus to the school they actually attend. Alva Public Schools Superintendent Steve Parkhurst said the reason for the new bus routes is the rise of childhood obesity and recent articles about changing nutritional diets at schools. “We were reading articles this summer saying that kids need to walk more, they need to be more responsible,” said Parkhurst Students who live in areas beyond the four-block radius will be picked up

Neeta Fay (Shoemake) Deaton, daughter of the late John and Lillian Shoemake, was born Nov. 1, 1919, in Standing Rock and passed away Aug. 10, 2013, in Alva at the age of 93. Neeta graduated from Atoka High School in 1937. On June 5, 1938, she married the late William Franklin Deaton whom she met while working as the cashier at the Pix Theatre he managed in Atoka. Her favorite job was as a kindergarten teacher’s aide in Nashville, Tenn., where she and Frank lived for many years. She was preceded in death by Frank, her husband of sixty-one years, her twin sister Weeta May Kelley, and two brothers, Ira and Leo Shoemake. She is survived by her sister Mary Haley and four children, Diana Kington, Judi O’Steen, Michael Deaton and Randy Deaton; eight grandchildren, Tod Kington and Brooke (Kington) Sherritt, David and Patrick O’Steen, Kim (Deaton) Gregson and Brett Deaton, and Jacob and Alex Deaton; and one great-grandchild, Cole Franklin Gregson. A faithful member of the College Hill Church of Christ, Neeta was loved by everyone who knew her. Her life revolved around her family and friends on whom she lavished her love and attention. Until recently, she continued to serve by volunteering in the nursing home where she spent her final days, tutoring young children to read and preparing excellent dishes for every potluck that came her way. Though she had very few earthly possessions, Neeta was rich with love and faith. She will be deeply missed.

said that Kerry left just before he arrived. She said Kerry tried to gain entry at the front and side doors while also sending her text messages. Deputy Gebers found 61 text messages from Kerry on Shawna’s phone from 10:49 a.m. and 11:55 a.m. on Aug. 4 asking her to come outside and talk. In return, Shawna sent 13 messages telling him to go away. On Aug. 5, Shawna Gregg filed another protective order against Kerry Gregg at approximately 9 a.m. That same day, Shawna reported to Helena Police Chief Jim Dykes that Kerry was parked at the Salt Plains State Park where she works. She said he tried to wave her down as she drove by. She said he sent several texts and emails saying he could text and email her because the protective order had not been served to him. On Aug. 6, Shawna reported that Kerry called her work phone approximately 45 times. Her boss answered the phone and told Kerry to stop calling. She said Kerry threatened her job saying he would call human relations in Oklahoma City and make complaints. Later on Aug. 6, Shawna’s boss received a phone call from human relations in Oklahoma City regarding complaints about Shawna.
On Aug. 8 about noon Kerry Gregg was served with the restraining order by Deputy Mike Dodds in Helena. According to court papers after being served, Kerry went to Shawna’s home and posted on Facebook that he would be at the farm. Shawna was not home at the time. Later on Aug. 8 about 4:21 p.m. Shawna called the sheriff’s office to report that Kerry was following her on Highway 38 going south. She said he was in a silver Ford F150. She said Kerry had been headed north on Highway 38 and passed her going south. He turned around and started following her. Shawna started taking pictures with her cellphone. Kerry passed her and slowed down. She said she was on the Jet blacktop heading south and Kerry was trying to get her to stop. Kerry turned at Highway 45 heading toward Goltry, and she continued toward Helena. A witness to the incident told the sheriff’s department he saw a silver Ford F150 following Shawna. He said the vehicle belongs to Kerry Gregg, whom he knows. About 4:31 p.m. Gebers interviewed Shawna who said she was in great fear for her life. She said that Kerry made statements that if she was gone all this would
go away. She said that Kerry hacked into her AT&T account and turned on a GPS tracking device. She said she felt unsafe because Kerry is tracking her and knows where she is at all times. Shawna Gregg sent Gebers three pictures she took while Kerry was following and passing her. He verified that the tag number on the pickup came back belonging to Kerry. She also printed out all text and email messages he sent to her which have been placed into evidence.

After 26 years at Burlington, Dee Dee Feely says ‘I loved every minute’ By Yvonne Miller For 26 years at Burlington School, Dee Dee Feely was the pretty teacher with long blonde hair who first graders fell in love with as she taught them to read and much more. “I’m going to miss it,” Feely said. “But it’s time for a young, enthusiastic person to come in. I’ve loved every minute of it. When you teach first grade, you can correct the students and they still like school.” “My husband (Joe) always teased me. He said once I have students in my classroom they are mine. I love watching them go through school. I felt pressure to make sure they could read. That was my thing (with a reading specialist degree).” Feely said she is thrilled that Jessica Hadwiger is replacing her. Originally from Alva, Hadwiger taught school at Edmond last year. Her grandmother Meredith Hadwiger was a highly regarded high school English teacher at Burlington in the 1970s. Describing herself as a teacher, Feely said, “I’m a soft touch. My job was to teach them to read, do math and to love school. I gave positive rewards like Smarties and stickers. First graders are messy – I believe a messy desk is a creative mind. There’s lots of free thinking in first grade.” She said one of her students’ favorite class projects was in social studies as they built a community with houses made of milk jugs. “The kids loved my car collection,” she said. But she knew retirement was imminent when she began teaching former students’ children. “I’ve loved all my kids. We have good parents at Burlington,” Feely said. “I will miss everyone I worked with – we were really good about helping each other. At Burlington everyone liked everyone. We had a real family atmosphere. I had many student teachers through the years and every one of them commented on what a pleasure it is to work at Burlington. It becomes a part of your livelihood,” she said. Knowing that numerous new teachers are coming on board this year, Feely said, I have no doubt all the staff will come together.” This fall, teacher Vanessa Garvie will have 20 kindergartners. Although retired, Feely said she’ll help Garvie with testing. Had Husband and Son as Her Principal Feely’s husband Joe was her principal at Burlington twice before his retirement a few years ago. Darrel Humphries was principal between Joe’s two stints. Then the Feelys’ son Shane became the Burlington principal, a position he still holds. “It was easy for me to have my husband and son as principal, because they are both by-the-rules kind of guys. They made my job easier,” Feely said. Besides teaching, Joe coached girls’ basketball for many
years. “He coached our daughter Jodee. That was worse than anything,” Feely said with a laugh. “But, it’s been good.” Jodee is now an accountant. She and her husband Jake Kelln reside in Alva with their children Jaycee, age 6, and Jett, 3. The Feelys’ son Shane, the Burlington principal, and his wife Kiley (who is the music teacher at Burlington), have three sons: Jackson, a fourth grader; Hudson, a first grader; and Lincoln, a kindergartner. Because those grandchildren are getting bigger, Feely said she wants to be free to follow their activities. In retirement, Feely said she most looks forward to, “Doing anything I want to whenever I want to!” Joe continues to farm and host hunters, whom Feely said, “are now our friends.” The couple loves Red River, N.M. and hopes to relax there more often.

“I’m not `techy’,” Armbruster said, “I like that my students can write a paper on their Chromebook and I can grade it right there on the device. I normally write a lot of comments on their papers as I grade them and I can write my comments like always.” MacKinney said Chromebooks are an enhancement, a way of bringing 21st century skills into the classroom. Principal Shaffer described it as “a way to progress.” Chromebooks were selected over iPads because they are better for students to create work upon and collaborate, MacKinney said.iPads are a better way to access information. The board approved the use policy for the Chromebook technology, insurance and take home fees. MacKinney said students will pay a $25 deposit that is refundable at the end of the year if they return their Chromebook in good condition. There’s also a non-refundable $25 insurance fee. Each device will cost the district $238, he said. Employee Update Amanda Worthington submitted her resignation as agriculture teacher and FFA advisor, which the board accepted. The board approved South Barber High School (SBHS) graduate Kyle Jacobs to replace Worthington. Jacobs recently graduated from K-State University. Teacher Nathan Gevelinger resigned his position as head middle school football coach. The board approved SBHS alum Burton Walz as the new head mid-
dle school football coach and retired teacher Fred Gillig as the assistant. Samantha Nichols, who is the new fifth grade teacher, received the board’s approval to be the assistant (to head coach Steve Roberts) high school girls’ basketball coach. Worthington was approved as a substitute teacher for the 2013-14 year. Kathy Dohm was also approved as a substitute teacher. She’s been retired a year after a 20-year teaching career at Attica. Sharon Hayes-Wilson was also approved as a substitute teacher. She’s substituted at Medicine Lodge since 2005. Jana Dunham, married to Tyler, was approved as a Title I paraprofessional at the elementary school. Budget Approved The 6 p.m., meeting opened with a public budget hearing. Superintendent Morris explained the general fund budget is built on full time equivalent (FTE) student enrollment. Estimated FTE enrollment for the 2013-14 school year is 221.5. Government funding is $3,838 per FTE, plus additional money for weighting factors such as low enrollment numbers, at-risk students, transportation and number of free and reduced lunches. That weighting total is $514.9/FTE. That makes the general fund operating budget $1,976,186. Morris said there is $309,440 flowthrough special educational money. This makes the estimated 2013-14 local option budget (LOB) general fund budget $2,234,692. The superintendent explained the LOB is 30 percent of the general fund budget. He said South Barber is “maxed out on the LOB.”
USD 255 has eight mills, which currently equals $675,000 for capital outlay. With no public comment, the board approved the budget as presented. Superintendent Comments on P1 Grade School Project Morris said they had a walk-through with the P1 Group, which has almost completed renovations at the grade school. All the major work is complete with small details like caulking remaining. A cleaning crew has started on the building. He said Wells Paint Service has been painting at the grade school. P1 reps will attend the September board meeting to answer questions. Student Handbook and More Board Business Principal Shaffer said he made changes to student handbooks for junior and senior high. A few examples of additions to the dress guidelines are: no yoga shorts or sleepwear, no hoods on head from hooded sweatshirts and no sagging pants. Shaffer made the attendance policy more stringent and also the substance abuse policy. Board members seemed to like the rules for all extra-curricular activities being equal. The board approved the new handbook policies as presented. Shaffer announced all the extra-curricular events meetings. Practices begin Monday, Aug. 19. The board approved a request from the South Barber Recreation Commission to use the game and practice fields for rec football activities.

Kiowa Council seeks police officer, approves budget amendment, street work started ‘Burnout’ approved for Labor Day weekend By Yvonne Miller The Kiowa City Council meeting started nearly 15 minutes late Monday night as members awaited a quorum. Mayor Brandon Farney presided over the meeting, which was attended by members R.L. Simpson, Russel Molz and Tom Wells. Mark Lambert arrived late. Bill Watson was absent. The meeting opened with a public hearing for a 2013 budget amendment. With no public comments the document was approved. The amendment deals with the purchase of a rescue rig and bunker gear that placed this fund in the red. Approving the amendment avoids a budget violation with the audit. Part of the funding for the rig and gear came from a donation by Shell Oil. City Administrator Nathan Law said. Shell Oil recently announced they are
leaving the state of Kansas. He also said Shell Oil donated $2,500 for Kiowa’s Annual Labor Day bean feed. As Law reported last month, the City of Kiowa’s 2014 budget will be short if the city does not generate more revenue. The council is calling for a special election Sept. 10. The election calls for a three-quarters of a cent increase in sales tax. That would take Kiowa’s sales tax from 7.15 to 7.9 percent. Law said estimates are the increased sales tax would generate $62,000 for the city. New Police Officer Search and Pay Raise Kiowa Police Officer Robert McGlothlin submitted his resignation July 22. He left the city in good standing after working in Kiowa one-and-a-half years. While accepting his resignation, the council wanted to publicly thank
McGlothlin for his service. Police Chief Steven Johnson told the council McGlothlin left Kiowa so he could better provide for his family. Johnson said the force needs a third officer to rotate in the schedule. That need is immediate, he said, as a large new pipeline crew is coming to Kiowa and “we’ve already had some problems.” The council agreed to advertise for the position. Following an executive session at the end of the meeting, the council agreed to increase the hourly wages of Kiowa Police Officer Warren Howerter to $14.50 per hour, according to Law. The administrator said after a separate executive session, the council approved disciplinary action for an employee who is non-elected personnel. See Kiowa Page 30

Other Kiowa City Council Action Chief Johnson said he received a request from someone wanting to have a “burnout” Labor Day weekend. The council approved having it Sunday when the car show is in town. The burnout will be held along a section of Main Street east of Seventh Street. The chief also said he had someone inquire about the release of the pit bull dog ordinance. The council did not discuss the subject. Ordinance No. 405 to adopt Standard Traffic Ordinance for Kansas Cities received council approval. So did Ordinance No. 406 to adopt the Uniform Public Offense Code. Barber County Economic Development (BCED) entered a sixmonth contract with Jim Rowland to
head the organization. He’ll be in Barber County one-and-a-half weeks each month and will be available by email the remainder of the month. Mayor Farney and Law are interim board members for BCED. They seek two locals who would like to volunteer as Kiowa representatives. The council tabled action after a discussion of how to handle vehicles such as ATV’s on city streets. The council approved the purchase of a chlorine room for the well house that provides Kiowa’s water supply from the water wells near Sharon. The purchase is not to exceed $11,000. The city generator is in need of repairs; the cost is not yet known. The council directed staff to make expenditures as necessary to ensure the generator continues to function properly. Three 37.5 kVA polemount transformers will be purchased from the electric fund. The council gave approval for the purchase at $770 per transformer for a total of $2,310. Under council items, Lambert asked who is inspecting the sealing of the streets. He said the process needs to be monitored, as he’s personally seen some problem areas.

The last transfer was for $280,000 from T-2A to R-12 for salaries after lapsed appropriations were applied. An I-40 crosstown transfer form was approved for a bridge in District 3. This bridge is in need of replacement and was brought to the commissioners’ attention at a previous meeting. Lastly, a resolution was made for the disposal of an HP computer from the commissioners’ office. The commissioners approved 38 road crossing permits during the meeting totaling $33,500. District 1 held 15 of the permits at $17,000; District 2 had 14 permits totaling $7,000; District 3 had nine permits that totaled $9,500.

Oklahoma City – Nearly every state legislator with a prison in their district has signed onto a petition calling for corrections funding to be addressed if a special session is called, according to state Rep. Gus Blackwell. As of Aug. 5, the state corrections system is at 97.7 percent capacity, or has filled 25,348 of the 25,946 state and contract beds available. There are 1,672 inmates in county jail that are awaiting transfer to the state corrections system, with a typical wait time of approximately eight to 10 months. As of July 1, 61.68 percent of the correctional officer positions are filled.
According to the Department of Corrections (DOC), there is approximately $7 million remaining in the revolving funds referenced by Gov. Mary Fallin when she rejected a supplemental appropriations request made by the agency. Nearly $5 million in the revolving funds cannot be used by the agency unless it receives specific authorization from the Oklahoma Legislature, which they have yet to receive. “Public safety is the number one legitimate core function of government,” saud Blackwell, R-Laverne. “It’s essential that we make sure that the officers and staff of the Department
of Corrections are able to perform their jobs in an atmosphere of safety and that the citizens of Oklahoma are kept safe from the danger inherent in overcrowded prisons. The continued low number of officers coupled with the high incarceration rates is producing a situation that is conducive to extremely problematic scenarios in the DOC facilities. “If the governor believes that tort reform is such a pressing issue that she must call a special session, then surely the safety and protection of DOC employees ought to also be on the agenda.”

Miller and Tyson recognized for outstanding skills in National Competition On July 7 - 11 the Family, Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) held its National Leadership Conference in Nashville, Tenn. Andrew Miller and Kaylee Tyson of the Waynoka FCCLA chapter attended the conference. The Gaylord Opryland Resort and Convention Center hosted over 7,000 FCCLA members, advisors, alumni and guests. The students competed in their STAR Events where Tyson received a gold medal and Miller a bronze. While in Nashville, the students attended the Grand Ole Opry where Oklahoma’s own Carrie Underwood was one of many acts that performed. They also took in downtown Nashville, visiting the Hard Rock Café and the Wild Horse Saloon for dinner and line dancing. Dining out is always an experience while traveling. The students ate at Rainforest Café and the Aquarium Restaurant to name only a couple. The students attended various workshops, sessions and exhibit halls and judged other competitive events while at the conference. This leadership experience was one that the students will not forget.
