A collision occured on Oklahoma Boulevard at Noble Street around 12:50 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 20. Not pictured is a Chevrolet Traverse SUV driven by Tina Pettus, accompanied by her husband. She said both vehicles were traveling east on Oklahoma Boulevard when she was rear-ended by the silver PT Cruiser. Damage to the PT Cruiser was heavy, as the left front wheel was broken from the axle. The door was ripped off by rescue personnel to extract the driver, who is being loaded into the ambulance in the photo. Damage to the Pettus vehicle was light: a slightly bent right back fender. board opened all bids for the building at a previous regular meeting. The first bid opened was sent by Heritage Construction of Stillwater. They sent a lump sum price of $2.793 million and an estimated completion time of 330 days. The next bid was sent by Henson Construction of Enid. Their lump sum price was $2.624 million, and the estimated completion time was 365 days. Hembree & Hodgson Construction sent the board a bid of $2.797 million. Reeder General out of Oklahoma City sent a bid of $2.62 million with an estimated completion time of 300 days. Miller Tippens, also from Oklahoma City, sent the commissioners a bid of $2,82 million with an estimated completion time of 300 days. Every bid included alternate bid items that came with varying price deductions or additions. The contract signed by the commissioners gave an estimated completion time of 300 days and
a price of $2.562 million. After accepting the building bid, the board voted to approve minutes from the last meeting, M & O warrants and blanket purchase orders. A 2001 Ford E450 ambulance was removed from the ambulance district to be used by the Carmen Responders. Commissioner Chad Roach said the ambulance district purchased new vehicles, and older models have a low resale value. They sent the ambulance to Carmen to be utilized by the fire department. The next item on the agenda for the commissioners’ approval was the extension of bid prices for any additional John Deere grader purchases. A total of 15 road crossing permits were approved and totaled $15,750. Ten permits were received for District 1 and totaled $13,500. Two were received for District 2 totaling $1,250, and three were received for District 3 at $1,000.

See improved South Barber grade school at ice cream social Monday
By Yvonne Miller All summer South Barber’s old grade school building has undergone a major facelift. Driving by the building on the east end of Main Street in Kiowa, Kan., newly installed windows make the school look like new. The public is invited to a PTOsponsored ice cream social at the grade school next Monday, Aug. 26, from 5 p.m. to 6 p.m. Refreshments will be served in the basement cafeteria. A friendly warning: while eating ice cream you might get chilly in the newly air conditioned building. You can check out the many improvements throughout the building, such as the much improved lighting and the lowered ceilings. You’ll be amazed at what the new windows do for the classrooms and gymnasium.

Three staff members join Waynoka schools By Alex Cole The Waynoka Board of Education met for a regular meeting on Monday. When it came time to discuss the employment of two teachers and a cafeteria cook, they voted against convening in executive session. The hiring of all three staff members was voted for approval. The board hired Sam Whooton as a certified English teacher, Margie Bagley as a certified math teacher and Misty Lay as a cafeteria cook. They also approved the extra duty schedule and support salary schedule. While giving the superintendent’s report, Loren Tackett first announced that the school was accredited with no deficiencies for the last school year. Afterward, he presented the board members
with a chart of Waynoka’s enrollment numbers since 1991. The highest enrollment numbers were from 1997 and 1998 and totaled 297 children on the first day of school. The count got as low as 222 in the year 2009. The enrollment number for this year is 279 compared to last year’s total of 256. “School seems to have started real well,” he said. Principal Merriwether gave his report and said 54 kids participated in after-school activities, which is a larger group than usual. Next, Tackett announced plans to remodel two bathrooms at the school and presented the board with countertop samples and paint colors. Tackett said he knows the number of tiles needed for the floors but hasn’t decided on floor
samples. Board members approved minutes from the last meeting, the activity fund and financial reports for the general fund, building fund, coop fund, child nutrition fund, bond fund 1, bond fund 2 and the gift fund. Encumbrances were approved for the general fund and child nutrition fund. The board also voted to approve 1,080 school hours for the year. Tackett said, “Three years ago, they gave schools the option of going 1,080 hours or 180 days. It’s just in everyone’s best interest to go hours.” Fundraiser requests were approved for FFA, FCCLA, TSA, library, band and vocal, girls basketball, boys basketball, junior and sophomore classes and the yearbook staff.
Summer reading program trip to Leonardo’s To encourage children to read all summer long, the Waynoka Public Library extended a challenge. The challenge was to read 30 minutes a day for five days a week all during the months of June and July. This totals up to 20 hours of reading this summer. The reward for achieving this goal was a fun trip to Leonardo’s Discovery Warehouse and Adventure Quest in Enid. Fourteen readers accepted the challenge and reaped the reward. They were Waylon Vendetti, McKenzie Pitts, Aus-
tin Rankin, Kennedy Zook, Cheyenne Cox, Brylee and Breya Beck, Sierra, Dakota and Cheyenne Davidson, Kohl Ince, Kaylee Sims-Ince, Lydon SimsHommertzheim and Arielle Blalock. Sponsors were Hannah Good, Jackie Ince, Kim Vendetti, Cindy Cox and daughter Cori, Pamala Davidson and Debra Rankin. The favorite attraction at Leonardo’s was the gigantic castle. Some of the other activities included the kitchen/ shopping area, woodworking area and the light-bright area. The group enjoyed
an animal show where they learned and got to ask questions and – best of all – touch/pet the unusual animals: leopard gecko, ferret, hedgehog, chinchilla and boa constrictor. In the midst of all the fun, everyone enjoyed a picnic lunch, then after more play time, just before loading the bus to head home, all had a snack and a drink to end their Leonardo’s adventure. This successful summer reading program would not have been possible without the help and donations of several people. The theme for the program was “Dig into Reading,” featuring underground happenings and burrowing animals, so appropriately the doorway had the appearance of a burrow entrance, complete with dirt berm and grass. The children of Waynoka are very lucky to have so many people interested in encouraging them to read during the summer months. Reading during the summer truly does make a drastic difference in retaining the reading skills the children learned the previous year in school.

Lodge ‘Pageant Drive-In’ Your votes helps win digital projector from ‘Honda’s Project Drive-In’
Lydel McCollum and Jeannessa Norton
By Yvonne Miller First opened in 1952 and owned by the Sill family since 1968, the Pageant DriveIn at Medicine Lodge, Kan., showed its last movie of the season this weekend. Owner Mike Sill hopes it won’t be the last movie ever shown there. That’s because in less than three months the movie industry’s switch from film to digital happens. Upgrading to digital projection costs roughly $80,000. Obviously, the owner of a drive-in in a small, rural, Kansas town that is open only in the summer cannot afford that cost. That’s according to Honda, the vehicle manufacturer, whose press release says with this change to digital, “The majority of American drive-in theaters will face closure.” Honda further said, “We want to preserve this iconic part of American car culture. So we’re taking the first step by starting a drive-in fund and donating five digital projectors. Your vote decides where they go.” See Drive-In Page 18

Burlington School seeks secretary, bus driver; hires math teacher Miss Burlington Sept. 6 at 12:30 p.m. By Yvonne Miller With the 2013-14 school year just underway, Burlington School still needs bus drivers and a replacement for secretary Mary Anne Hathaway, who submitted her resignation at the August meeting Monday night. Board President Terry Graham presided over the meeting with all members present: Beth Guffy, Roger Allen, Allison Armbruster and Aaron Smith. Others present were Superintendent Glen Elliott, Principal Shane Feely, Judy Elliott and minutes clerk Mary Anne Hathaway. At a recent special meeting, the board hired Sammie Kinsey to teach numerous high school math classes. Returning to the Nash area, Kinsey has taught for 16 years, Elliott said. She’ll be full time at Burlington, teaching algebra I and II, geometry, computer classes and more as needed. Teacher Randy Turney continues to teach junior high math classes. Following an executive session, the board accepted Hathaway’s resignation and discussed the need to advertise for a new secretary. They approved hiring Neal Gordon to drive a morning bus route. The superintendent said that as usual everyone at Burlington School is helping out with the secretarial duties and bus driving until replacements are hired.
Upon return to open session, the board members signed employee contracts. The superintendent said projected enrollment numbers for the 2013-14 school year is 141 students. Elliott said this number is slightly less than last year and reflects a loss of some students who were here with families involved with oil and gas. Of the students enrolled, 114 children qualify for transportation and are on the bus routes. The superintendent reported on the OSSBA Convention that will begin. Aug 24 in Oklahoma City. In other action, the board voted to table the minutes of Aug. 5, July 22 and July 1 until the next meeting. Regarding the superintendent’s ranch-style house plans to be constructed with a bond issue, the board made a few minor changes such as the way doors go in or out, Elliott said. The board accepted the modified house plans, which will now go to the school architect for approval. Elliott said guesstimates are that the house project will be ready to be bid in about six weeks. The board discussed and approved updates to the 2013-14 policy book and student handbook. The following encumbrances, change orders, and warrants were also approved: • General fund

The July activity report was approved, as was the reaffirment of the procurement policy. The FR3 expenditure and revenue report was tabled until the next meeting. The Miss Burlington pageant will be Friday, Sept. 6, at 12:30 p.m. in the auditorium. The superintendent said the single contestant is senior Heather Armbruster. She will perform on the stage as she will at the Miss Cinderella talent show and pageant on the Northwestern Oklahoma State University campus during their homecoming Oct. 24-26.

Lynn Says
Wish I had been this good at age sixteen
By Lynn L. Martin I was very impressed with a Facebook post that granddaughter Katherine Kuhlmann posted last week. Had such an event happened to me when I was sixteen, I would have looked away, checked out, and thought “that clerk needs to get her act together. We can all learn lessons from the youth. I hope this event can help us all become more kind natured no matter how unusual the opportunity.
When I asked Katherine if I could post her story, I asked how did others in the store react. She said the clerk, about 20 years of age, just sobbed a bit more. And there was only one other person in the store and she may not have noticed.

Drive-In
Supporters of Pageant Drive-In can vote daily from now until Sept. 9 by text and on the website. To vote for Medicine Lodge’s Pageant Drive-In vote at http:// www.projectdrivein.com/vote_93 or text “vote93” to 444-999. Cast two votes per day by voting online and by text. Going to the drive-in “is just one of those things you grow up doing and enjoy it,” Mike said. “We’ve got people who are here every weekend – some bring lawn
chairs and blankets. It’s a time to visit and have fun. We show mainly family movies so everyone can enjoy. Hopefully we’ll be able to open next summer. But if we don’t go digital, we probably won’t be able to.” Pageant Drive-in History with Sill Family Owners Mike said his parents, Owen “Frosty” and Wanda Sill, were in the theater business for 45 years. They operated both the drive-in and the downtown theater, which
closed about 1982 or ‘83, Wanda said. “When videos came out, that killed us,” Wanda said. “We had lots of fun in the theater,” Wanda recalled. “Our kids grew up in it.” “We worked long hours, but I never thought of it as work,” Wanda said. “We enjoyed it all – we just did.” In the concession stand, Wanda said their homemade BBQ beef was popular. Their daughter Linda Leibham, who resides in Medicine Lodge, remembers working in the concession stand. “There were tricks to getting the popcorn just right,” she said. “Dad always said, `Do it right or don’t do it at all,” Leibham still remembers. “We made pizzas to order, and footlong hotdogs with and without chili were popular,” she said. “So were the pickled eggs, hot mama sausages and big dill pickles.” Pixie sticks were the favorite candy of little kids while candy bars topped the teen and adult favorites, she said. When asked her fondest memories of the drive-in, Wanda said one time in the late 1970s or early 80s they had a triple feature of John Wayne movies. “We had cars parked everywhere.” She liked that “every night was different. There were good times and some down times too. It gets in your blood, running theaters.” After seeing countless movies through the years, Wanda said her “all-time favorite movie is `April Love.’ That was special to my husband and I – even before we opened the theaters. The `Sound of Music’ is also one of my favorites,” Wanda said. “As a kid in Wichita I paid nine cents to get into a Saturday movie – spent a total quarter with refreshments,” Wanda said. For years at the movies in Medicine Lodge they charged $2 for adults and 50 cents for kids. This season drive-in admission was $7 for adults and $5 for kids. Wanda said she’s “so happy” the drive-in survived. Mike and his wife Amy (who works in the county clerk’s office) took it over in 1995, just finishing their 19th season. “Mike likes to do it for the community. It’s the nostalgia of it,” Wanda said. Mike said they draw customers from Pratt, Harper, Kingman and Sedgwick counties in Kansas and from Oklahoma. See Drive-In Page 22

Drive-In “It’s awesome what Mike has done,” Leibham said of her brother. She said there are only five drive-ins remaining in Kansas. In a piece KAKE News in Wichita did about Honda’s Project Drive-In, they said only 368 drive-ins remain in the entire USA. The Sill family always held other jobs in addition to the theaters. Wanda said she and Frosty had the Daylight Donut shop 36 ½ years until 2008. In the mid 1970s, they also had the Champlain Station. Frosty passed away in 2012. Mike is a farmer while Leibham has Six-L Catering in Medicine Lodge. She hopes to resurrect the downtown theater as a non-profit if fundraising allows. “I applied for non-profit status in 2012 and still haven’t heard from the IRS,” Leibham said. She said on Nov. 30 the first fundraiser will be “A Country Christmas Ball” at the Heritage Center in Medicine Lodge. Mike said they are limited on fundraising for the drive-in because it’s a forprofit business. As Wanda recounted her lifetime in the theater business, she said, “It’s sad to see an era end. Frosty and I saw it when videos came into use and now it’s digital. No telling what the next 50 years will bring. But for now I hope all the support from everyone voting to save the drive-in will keep it going for years to come. Thanks for all the support the last 45 years.”

New South Barber teacher and coach Jeff Lantz says ‘lead by example’
By Yvonne Miller “As a coach I’m 95 percent positive. I know there are times you have to be a strict disciplinarian. But I’m a cheerleader – you have to stay positive with the kids. You lead by example – showing your drive, your passion and commitment,” new South Barber High School teacher and coach Jeff Lantz said. His sentiment was the same when describing himself as a teacher. “As a classroom teacher you need to set the tone and lead by example. My passion is for the success of students,” Lantz said. “I get motivated by seeing students succeed – then I feel like I’m making a difference. I stay positive and energetic.”
Starting 7 a.m., girls fall tennis practices this week, his players describe Mr. Lantz as “exuberant and motivational.” He’ll coach boys tennis in the spring. At the girls tennis meeting, Lantz told players and parents he’s excited to have an assistant, Amanda (Helfrich) Ricke, who was a standout on the SBHS tennis team in high school and a state contender. A 2005 SBHS graduate, Amanda and her husband Bryan reside in Kiowa where she is an accountant in the firm of her parents, Carl and Deb Helfrich. Bryan works with his father at Mark’s Welding in Medicine Lodge. At South Barber, Lantz will also be head coach for high school boys basketball. He’ll teach Business Technology classes to freshmen and sophomores; 7th and 8th grade computers; and a junior level computer programing class using Visual Basic for the language. That class will also include video editing and ani-
mation. “I want to be in the classroom to have conversation and hear kids’ opinions. I really enjoy visiting with my students,” he said. Lantz lives in Harper with Stacie, his wife of 20 years who is a first grade teacher at Harper; and their children – daughter Courtney, a senior at Chaparral High School; and son Caden, an 8th grader. A native of Chapman, Kan., Lantz graduated from Emporia State in 1992. He taught and coached eight years at Chaparral. Then he accepted a job at Wichita Southeast High School where he’s taught and coached the last 13 years. At Southeast Lantz taught business classes and eventually coached. I feel like all the hard work paid off,” Lantz said. “In the classroom or on the court, you see the sacrifices of so many people,” Lantz said. “I see the sacrifice of my own family with my time – everything is so intertwined – it pays off and
is worth it.” Telling of his tennis experience, Lantz said he never dreamed he could play at Emporia State because he didn’t play in high school. He ended up loving it and playing on that college team three years as one of the top six. Lantz coached tennis at Chaparral. As a coach, Lantz said, “My job is to explain and teach kids the mental side of the game as well as the physical aspect. Every single kid on the team has some-
thing to contribute.” Considering his teaching and coaching schedule at South Barber, Lantz said, “I’m super elated to get to do so much.” When about his hobbies, Lantz replied, “Obviously, I love sports. I love an opportunity to do things with my family – whether it’s traveling or reading a book.” “I like to fish and am just getting into hunting. I also like working on our house. My wife is really good at doing things around the house.” Lantz mentioned his son was a Boy Scout which “really bonded us.” “We’ve talked about him coming to school at South Barber.” When Lantz interviewed in Kiowa, he said, “I met with (Superintendent) Morris, (Principal) Shaffer and (teacher, coach and athletic director) Steve Roberts. It was very comfortable and inspiring to see their vision for the school. It made me want to be a part of that.” “I can tell I’m going to like it here,” Lantz said.
