‘120 Years of the Cherokee Outlet’ through sculpture In conjunction with the celebration of 120 Years of the Cherokee Outlet, Woods County native Burneta Venosdel will discuss and demonstrate her techniques in bronze sculpture at the Sod House Museum Saturday, Sept. 21, at 10 a.m. Venosdel will focus on sculptures she created that reflect her ties to her home state of Oklahoma and how her pioneer roots have influenced her subject matter. She takes great pride in the fact that she is the fourth generation of a pioneer family. Venosdel will feature nine pieces of her art that reflect her pioneer connection of the Cherokee Outlet. Venosdel’s latest sculpture, called “Rein Maker” will be seen for the first time at the Sod House Museum. “I didn’t know if this piece would ever come to fruition,” Venosdel said.
“I started the sculpture of my Dad’s first cousin Harold, over a year ago.” “Rein Maker” was a clay sculpture when Venosdel delivered it to the foundry. This is the first step in the nearly 20-step process from clay to bronze. The delivered clay was destroyed, along with six other artists’ clay sculptures, in a devastating fire that destroyed the Bronze Horse Foundry in Pawhuska Dec. 7. Venosdel received the bad news on the eve of her being awarded second place for her longhorn “Echoes” at the WAOW National Show held in Fredericksburg, Texas. It was a bittersweet evening, according to Venosdel, but she was determined to remake this piece. “Harold (‘Rein Maker’) is a character I wanted to capture in bronze,” says Venosdel. “I think the second one
is even better than the first.” Venosdel’s subject matter consists of people, cattle and animals. As an artist, she enjoys the adventure of discovery from the research, to the study of the subject, to the actual creation of the sculpture. “I am always learning and trying to convey a moment in time through sculpture,” said Venosdel. “I will continue to learn from my contemporaries and my subjects and share my talents with others. I have been blessed to discover my talent late in life and have a lot of catching up to do.” The Sod House Muscum. is located southeast of Aline on State Highway 8 and is open Tuesday through Saturday 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. For more information call Renee at 580-463-2441 or email sodhouse@okhistory.org.
Waynoka community hosts Bedlam blood drive
Blood donors can show their community and school spirit by donating with Oklahoma Blood Institute (OBI) Thursday, Sept. 19. The Waynoka community is sponsoring a blood drive from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. at the Chamber of Commerce in the conference room. “Someone needs blood every two seconds,” said John Armitage, M.D., president and chief executive officer of OBI. “That is why we are asking everyone to show community support through blood donation along with their school spirit during football season.” The Alva Review-Courier / Newsgram is published Wednesday by Martin Broadcasting Corp. 620 Choctaw St. Alva, Oklahoma 73717 Lynn L. Because there is no substitute for blood, the supply must constantly be renewed. Although all blood types are needed, those with O-negative type blood are especially encouraged to donate. According to AABB, those with Onegative blood type make up only nine percent of the national population. However, O-negative blood can be used in any emergency situation when
a patient’s blood type has not yet been identified. OBI exclusively provides every drop of blood needed by patients in Share Medical Center. Anyone 16 years or older can typically donate blood. Blood can be given every 56 days. Appointments are not required but can be made at obi.org or by calling Jeanne Cole at 580-5157509.

Lynn Says
The most employable degree skill!
By Lynn L. Martin When high school seniors visit the studio to have their senior pictures taken, I engage them in conversation, of course. A common question I ask is “What are your favorite and least favorite courses?” Very often “English” is cited as a least favorite. I rarely make an out-loud comment on that choice, but I groan internally. Thinking back, my sentiments were pretty much the same until my sophomore year in high school. For a reason that I can’t name, I became a pretty decent writer in that year. In fact, I volunteered to write a regular column named “Corner Capers” for the high school newspaper even though I wasn’t in that class. My interests were much like those of students today. I loved gadgets. I was well into photography by that time and had accumulated cameras and dark room equipment. I was also into electronics, experimenting in our basement electronics shop constructing Popular Electronics or CQ magazine projects. (CQ was a ham radio magazine.) So while those were my main interests, I fortunately continued a minor interest in writing. As it turns out, the writing skill provided the entry point for nearly every career advancement I made. After high school, I attempted college
at the Missouri School of Mines and Metallurgy (MSM). But at the same time, I needed a job. So I worked for my dad’s radio station as a news WRITER for several years. After failing to pass Calculus III in the third try at MSM, I realized electrical engineering was not for me. So I transferred into “Radio-TV Speech” at the University of Missouri at Columbia. While there, my part-time job to help support myself was WRITING commercials for KFRU radio. I did some on-air work also but it was commercial WRITING that got my foot into the door. Later, after I didn’t graduate from college and got married instead, I took a job at the Jewish Hospital of St. Louis. The job was to publish the hospital newspaper. They were blown away by the WOW photography work I showed them in the job interview, but the key feature on my resume’ that landed the job was the news WRITING job I had held at KTTR in Rolla, Mo. As it turned out, they had much higher writing standards than we had in the radio business, and I was forced to improve. I consider that two-year experience at Jewish Hospital to be when I really learned to WRITE. I had very tough bosses who scrutinized every sentence. The next move was to Alva with the purchase of KALV. There, I did tons of news and commercial WRITING. After a couple of years, we started the Newsgram, and I found myself WRITING many hours per day for both the radio and the newspaper product. In about 1975 I finished up a degree at Northwestern in psychology, with math and business minors. (The math minor was a gift because I had accumulated so many math hours at MSM while trying electrical engineering.) At Northwestern, my WRITING carried me well in the
research-paper-laden psychology coursework. Of course, now that we have the Alva Review-Courier and the Newsgram, I do a lot of WRITING covering various news events. The purpose of this self-history is to help current-day students understand that their English courses are really important. My WRITING capability opened nearly every door throughout my working career. I will admit that today my writing talents are just barely adequate. My wife, Marione, on the other hand, is an excellent writer and has an incredible command of English grammar rules. Indeed, our daughter Marisa, who is an English teacher at Ponca City, occasionally calls her mom to get an answer to a grammar question. Marione usually reels off the book, chapter and verse of the grammar answer without having to look at any reference. Even in our photography business, accurate WRITING is essential. Last summer, we experienced several hundred dollars in losses because senior or wedding proof albums came back from the lab with misspellings contributed by our employees. I’m not immune from such errors. Just this week I agreed to reprint an aerial proof book. The descriptive locations of some photos were not exactly correct. In this case, no misspellings were involved, but writing accuracy was not present. In conclusion, I think many students today are wooed by the fun courses of photography, or video, or the fancy electronic gadgets we all have. Heck, using those items doesn’t feel like work at all. But we’ve had to ease good photographers out the door at the newspaper because they couldn’t write a caption describing the photograph. Several times a month we have to re-edit the titling of a video because someone misspelled something. Just this past month, we hired two new employees at the newspaper. Both of them can write quite well. But they didn’t get hired until we determined their writing capability. If that skill was present, they were hired and then we handed them cameras and computers. The writing skill had to be there first or they would not have received the job offer.

After graduating from Northwestern, Austin worked at Cessna Aircraft Company in Wichita, when WWII broke out. He enlisted in the Navy, attended officer candidate school and was on various ships in the South Pacific until the war ended. He was on a ship in Leyte Gulf near the Philippines when he learned the war was over and once recounted the celebration saying, “there were fireworks all over the harbor. The sky was completely white – like daylight at night. It was something else!” Austin and Betty had two children: son Jack Barragree and wife Marilyn of Oklahoma City, and daughter Jan Robinson of Enid. The family lived first in Carmen where Austin went into business with his father-in-law running the Carmen Livestock Auction. Austin taught school and eventually became superintendent of the Cleo Springs, Waynoka and Northwest Area Vo-Tech schools in Alva and Fairview. He treasured all of his students. At Cleo Springs he coached girls’ basketball and the girls on his teams held an especially sweet spot in his heart. Upon his retirement from the vo-tech schools, Austin and Betty moved to Enid to be near their daughter Jan and grand-
daughters Megan and Lindsay. They were also very close to Jack’s daughter, Kristal Gaines, her husband Russell and their two children, Dustin and Ashlee. Austin and Betty were “Oh, so happily married!” for more than 50 years when Betty passed away in 1991. Austin was a member of the Methodist Church at all stops in life. At the First United Methodist Church in Enid, he met Edna Specie in his Sunday school class. One evening Edna invited him over for pot roast and a new chapter of Austin’s life began. Finding a second chance at love and life, Austin and Edna married in 1994. Together they attended hundreds of local sporting events. When Austin married Edna, he gained a whole new family: Edna’s daughter Carolyn McKeaigg and her husband Ronnie, their children Kent and Kobie; and daughter JoAnn Bentley and her husband Terry, and her son Bobby. The couple had 16 golden years together before Edna passed away in 2010. Austin’s service in the Navy during WWII entitled him to residence in the Norman Veterans Center, where
Obituaries AUSTIN BARRAGREE Friends and family will gather to remember Austin Barragree and celebrate his life on Saturday, Sept. 21, at 1 p.m. at the First United Methodist Church, 401 W. Randolph, in Enid. Austin was born Dec. 6, 1917, at his parents’ homesteader cabin on the north bank of the Cimarron River where it flows from Kansas into the Oklahoma Panhandle. The youngest of Tom and Stella Mae Barragree’s six children, he was preceded in death by all five of his siblings – Murriel, Orville, Dennis, Alice and Dean. Austin died peacefully at the Norman Veterans Center on Aug. 22, 2013. He was 95. Austin endured the Great Depression and the heart of the Dust Bowl. He graduated from high school at Meade, Kan., and began college at Fort Hayes, traveling back and forth to school by hitchhiking or jumping freight trains “just for the heck of it.” Austin later transferred to Northwestern at Alva, where he met and married Betty Halstead, Northwestern’s Ranger Queen.

Border Line’s ‘Radio Gals’ will sell you music and comedy this fall By Yvonne Miller The cast is set. Practices are ongoing. Watching a practice reveals the cast may be having too much fun. Imagine what they’ll do onstage when it’s showtime! A cast of seven will present “Radio Gals,” a musical comedy, for the Border Line Theatre’s fall production at the
Kiowa Community Building in Kiowa, Kan. Show dates are Oct. 26 and 27, and Nov. 2 and 3. The Saturday evening performances are in a dinner theatre setting featuring a fire-grilled steak meal that Border Line patrons always enjoy. Tickets will be available at Shirts and More in Kiowa.
The small cast of “Radio Gals” has lots of fun practicing with a variety of musical instruments for Border Line Theatre’s upcoming fall production, which is a musical comedy. Cast members are: (seated left to right) Jeaneane Fortune and Cherish Reeves; (back) Gary Jacobs, Cathy Cox, Brandon Poland, Janice Hill, Director Bob Gilliland and Jenny Cantrell. Photo by Yvonne Miller
The Sunday afternoon shows are 2 p.m. matinees. The plot centers around a retired music teacher who receives a radio transmitter as a gift and begins broadcasting as radio station “WGAL.” With the help of the seemingly innocent performing “Hazelnuts,” the radio signal of their colorful performance in which they sell “Horehound Compound” unknowingly reaches far beyond their small Arkansas town. The plot thickens and laughter intensifies when a federal radio inspector appears to shut down WGAL. Border Line Theatre actor Bob Gilliland of Avard is the first-time director of Radio Gals. Cast members are Cathy Cox, Gary Jacobs, Brandon Poland, Janice Hill, Cherish Reeves, Jenny Cantrell and Jeaneane Fortune. These people have made you laugh until you cry in their years on the Border Line stage. Be prepared for another round of laughter and some vocal and instrumental musical talent that will make you think you are a little closer to Broadway.
