Whismans celebrate 45th wedding anniversary Leslie and Barbara Whisman will celebrate their 45th wedding anniversary on Saturday Nov. 24. Les and Barbara were married at the Alva Church of the Nazarene on Nov. 24, 1967. They made their home in Lawton while Les was in the Army, returning to Alva where they raised their family. To their marriage they had four children: Ammie, Adam, Justin and Anita. Les was in the Army National Guard and worked for Central National Bank for 27 years before retiring on June 10, 2005. Barbara worked for Gertrude and Evelyn Myers. They are now enjoying retirement and spending time with their children Justin and Crystal Whisman, of Fort Wayne, Ind.; Ammie Buck and Anita

Malone; two adopted daughters, Amy Dooley and Diane McAlpin, all of Alva; and their thirteen grandchildren, Dezmond, Byron, Noah and Zariah Buck, Zelaynah Whisman, Adam John, Jacob and Abigail Whisman, Darian, Devyn, Daylon and Dyce Malone and Kayleigh McAlpin.

All of us kids would like to thank our parents for being such great role models to us and teaching us what a great, loving and caring marriage and family should be. The grandkids want to thank you for making each one of them special and loving them unconditionally! May you have many more! We all love you!

Board filing dates, resignation, vehicle bid, at Burlington School Board Undefeated Lady Elks beat No. 1 team in triple overtime, FFA leaders By Yvonne Miller Burlington School Superintendent Glen Elliott reminded about the upcoming filing dates for the open school board seat and discussed many other issues at the regular November Board of Education meeting Monday night. All board members attended: Terry Graham, Beth Guffy, Allison Armbruster, Aaron Smith and Roger Allen. Others present were Superintendent Glen Elliott, Principal Shane Feely, and Minutes Clerk Jan Hill. Board Seat No. 3, held by Allen, is up for re-election. Board filing dates are Monday, Dec. 3, through Wednesday, Dec. 5, from 8 a.m. - 5 p.m., daily at the Alfalfa County Courthouse. Bids for a new Suburban were opened from Washburn Motor Co., Croft Country Chevrolet and Bogner, Inc. After discussion, board approved the quote from Croft for a 2013 Silverado LS Suburban for $36,677.00, which was a year newer model and would hold more passengers than the lowest quote. The approval is pending confirmation of all specifications being met. The superintendent introduced new Pre-K teacher Connie Farris to the board who welcomed her to the district. A letter of resignation from full time paraprofessional Kathy Motycka was read and regretfully accepted with the board offering thanks to Kathy for her service to the school district. Her resig-

nation is due to health issues. Board approved the General Fund Budget for 2012-2013. The following monthly encumbrances, change orders and warrants for the General, Building and Child Nutrition Funds received board approval: General Fund—Encumbrances $17,918.90; Change orders $208.41; Warrants $133,647.94; Building Fund—Encubrances $2,269.00; Change Orders $210.06; Warrants $4,877.41; Child Nut. Fund—Encumbrances none; Warrants $5,822.23 The October Activity Fund Report and Board Meeting dates for 2013 were also approved. Board convened in executive session 45 minutes to review the status of evaluations of certified probationary personnel. Upon return to open session, board members discussed the sale of surplus vehicles. They declared four buses, one ag-ed pick-up and one maintenance pick-up as surplus. The vehicles will be listed for sale by purplewave online auction. Superintendent Elliott reported on the District 2 OSSBA Meeting in Waynoka; and said 100 percent of Burlington teachers are considered to be “highly qualified.” Student Achievements Principal Shane Feely reported on

student’s excellence in activities including basketball, FFA, Student Council and academic teams. The undefeated Lady Elks, 4-0, beat number one ranked Lomega in triple overtime in a home game. Elliott told the Newsgram that anyone who missed that game, most likely missed the “game of the year!” The Elks are 3-1, losing that game by only two points. Burlington hosted Kremlin-Hillsdale last night so results were not known at press time. As reported on the Elks Page in the Alva Review-Courier, Burlington’s Freedom Opening Ceremonies Team and FFA Greenhand Quiz students won first at the PI contest and advanced to the state finals in Stillwater where the Opening Ceremonies Team placed fourth. Members were Sarah Garvie, Alysson Stewart, Lexi Clark, Sadie Collins, Julia Ferrell, Abbie Newman and Lauren Harms. Sarah Garvie was frst in the State FFA Greenhand Quiz Contest and Lexi Clark was third. With 50 others, the girls taken a written exam and advanced to the state finals. The two were among the Top Five highest test scores and advanced to the Oral Finals. Again Sarah was first and Lexi third. Bayli Hyde earned first in the Junior Natural Resources Division of the Northwest District American Farmers and Ranchers Speech Contest. This qualifies her for the State Finals AFR Speech Contest. Cheredan Vap will also compete at the state finals as state winner in the intermediate division last year. This puts her in the State Tournament of Champions this year. – Burlington’s Academic Team placed second at regional competition and advanced to the area tournament. – Burlington’s Christmas Program is Dec. 13 at 7 p.m.

Joe Faircloth and Kali Merklein

Mitch and Shelly Merklein of Kiowa, Kan., and Joe and Patricia Faircloth of Pryor are pleased to announce the engagement and upcoming marriage of their children, Kali Sue Merklein and Joe Michael Faircloth. Kali is a 2008 graduate of South Barber High School and attended Fort Hays State University. She currently studies social work at Northeastern State University in Broken Arrow and works at Arvest Bank in Pryor. She is the granddaughter of Jake and Mary Anne Newton of Kiowa, Kan., Larry and Sharon Irvin of Phillipsburg, Kan., and Don Merklein of Phillipsburg. Joe is a 2007 graduate of Pryor High School, attended Rogers State University and will graduate from Northeastern State University in December with a degree in Social Studies Education. He is the grandson of Nell and the late Rev. Joe Faircloth and the late Murl and Laverne Rice. The couple will be wed on Saturday, Dec. 22 in Kiowa, Kan. They will reside in Pryor.

and ranch. He loved watching the new baby calves arrive each year. He was a loving and faithful husband and father. Murel lost his own father at the early age of eight years old when he was killed in an accident, tearing down the original First Christian Church in Cherokee. His mother raised three boys by herself. Murel served the Lord in many capacities at various churches as elder, deacon, Sunday School superintendent, chairman of the board, class president, trustee and was on various committees. He is survived by his wife, Maycel; daughter Sherry Canning and husband G.W.; sons Steve Bontrager and wife Tava, and Stan Bontrager; grandchildren Shelley Berryman and husband Robert, Buddy Canning and wife Michelle, Stephani Yunker and husband Lawrence and Keli Woods and husband Kyle; great grandchildren Brittney Jarnagin and husband Brody, Brayden Berryman, Brianna Berryman, Christa Otterman, Christan Otterman, Brittany Torres and husband James, Brooklyn Canning, Braxton Canning, Camber Canning, Britton Yunker, Briley Yunker, Kaylen Woods and one on the way; brother A.J. Obituaries MUREL BONTRAGER CHEROKEE—Service to celebrate Murel Bontrager’s life was held Monday, Nov. 19, at 10:30 a.m. at First Christian Church in Cherokee with Rev. Tom Stanley officiating. Burial followed at Cherokee Municipal Cemetery with arrangements by Lanman Funeral Home, Inc. of Cherokee, www.lanmanmemorials.com. Murel Bontrager, 94, passed on to his heavenly home on November 14, 2012. He was born to Abe and Bey Bontrager on November 23, 1917 and was raised in Cherokee. Murel graduated from Cherokee High School. He married Maycel Jenlink in Cherokee on May 26, 1940, and they shared 72 years together. Murel was baptized in 1931 by Rev. Smith in the First Christian Church of Cherokee. As a young man he worked at Cook’s Grocery, where he learned the butchering trade from his father-in-law, Albert Jenlink. During World War II, he was denied enlistment in to the U.S. Army due to poor eyesight, so he went to work at Boeing Aircraft in Wichita to help with the war effort. Murel’s dream and goal was to farm the land and raise cattle. The family farmed and ranched in Perry, Guthrie, Dacoma and then Cherokee. Murel and Maycel opened the Bontrager Meat Processing in 1975 in Cherokee, while continuing to farm

Richardson, was born Aug. 18, 1939, at Clyde, Texas, and passed away Nov. 17, 2012, at Alva, at the age of 73 years, 3 months and 9 days. Sandra attended school at Short Springs, Longfellow and Horace Mann before graduating from high school in Clyde, Texas. She was united in marriage to Grant Farley. During their thirteen years of marriage three daughters, Markangela, Karin and Sherrie, were born. She worked many years as a Nurse’s Aide, and also worked as a waitress and as a sales clerk in several of the local convenience stores.

She was a member of the First Baptist Church and the Moose Lodge where she served as an officer in Women of the Moose. Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by one brother, Drew Rutledge; and one sister, Sue Slay. Sandra is survived by her companion, Johnny Meyer, of Alva; three daughters, Markangela Kinnett of Stillwater, Karin Hodgson and husband, Terry, of Alva, and Sherrie McCurry and husband, David, of Kempner, Texas; two step sons, Ronnie Meyer and wife, Raelyn, of Wichita, Kan., and Rique Meyer and partner, April, of Ringwood; one step daughter, Lynda Meyer and husband, Dan, of Laverne; and one brother Wallace Richard-

son of California. Also surviving are twelve grandchildren, Leslie Nugent of Stillwater, Fallon Fritz and husband, David, of Livermore, Calif., Mandy Kinnett of Alva, Stormee Gaither and husband, Chance, of Waukomis, Taylor McCurry and wife, Brandy, of Ft. Constance Anna (Book) Clothier, was born May 13, 1925, at Peace Creek, Kan., and passed away Nov. 19, 2012, at Alva, at the age of 87 years, 6 months and 7 days. Jeanette graduated from Stafford Junior High in 1941 and Hutchinson High School with the class of 1944. On August 9, 1948, she was united in marriage to Allan Murra Gregg at Great Bend, Kan.. She made her home in Hutchinson, Iuka, Larned, Kiowa, and Hardtner, Kan., before moving to Alva in 1994. She was a member of the College Hill Church of Christ. She loved to cook and sew things for her grandchildren. Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Allan; one brother, James Clothier; and one granddaughter, Connie Jean Warrington. Jeanette is survived by one daughter, Vickie Warrington and husband, Russell, of Hutchinson, Kan.; one son, Kent Gregg and wife, Verlinda, of Alva; one brother, Rex Clothier of Marion, Kan.; four grandchildren, Traci Tritsch and husband, Jon, of Wichita, Tammi Warrington and Tonya Warrington, both of Hutchinson, and Angela Lyon and husband, Mitchell, of Enid; five great grandchildren; other family and friends. MeRITA HOY Services for MeRita Hoy, 101, of Alva are pending with Wharton Funeral Chapel. REOLA LOHMANN Funeral services for Reola Lohmann will be 11 a.m., Saturday, Nov. 24, at the Zion Lutheran Church with Pastor Aaron Wagner officiating. Interment will be in the Zion Lutheran Cemetery under the direction of Marshall Funeral Home of Alva. Reola Georgia,

daughter of Dewey William and Daisy Florence (Curtis) Crow was born Nov. 6, 1922, at her grandparents Curtis home southwest of Cherokee. She was born to eternal life on Nov.18, 2012, at her home in Alva at the age of 90 years and 12 days. She lived in Cherokee and attended the Cherokee school system and worked for several people, cooking, cleaning and tending gardens in order to help support her younger siblings. Reola was united in marriage to Gilbert P.J. Lohmann on Aug. 17, 1941, at the Alva Zion Lutheran Church. To their marriage two children, Karen Diane and Monty Gilbert, were born. Following their marriage they made

their home five miles south and two and one half miles east of Alva. In 1959, the family moved into Alva and in 1961 moved to a farm two miles south and two miles west of Kiowa, Kan., and in 1965 moved to 514 14th Street in Alva. During their marriage she worked at J.C. Penney in Alva and became an Avon representative in 1957 and was active till 2012. All during their marriage they farmed and ranched in the Alva area and also in Beaver and Powers counties, Colo. Reola was first baptized in Clay Creek south of Cherokee and on January 25, 1942, was rebaptized and confirmed at the Alva Zion Lutheran Church and has been a member of the church since that time. She was the last remaining charter member of the Mary Martha Guild of the church. Mrs. Lohmann was preceded in death by her parents, husband Gilbert, sister Viola Azbill, and brothers Dewey Merle, James and Lawrence. Reola is survived by her son, Monty Lohmann of Alva, and her daughter, Karen Turner and husband Alex of Breckenridge, Colo.; grandsons John Turner and wife Jennifer and sons Jacob See Obits Page 62

Alfalfa County Sheriff’s Log November 9, 2012 11:06 p.m. welfare check, respondent advised of his girlfriends vehicle description and where she works, wants us to check up on her, he knows she is all right, wants to know where she is, he advised he got a hold of her, she answered her phone. November 10, 2012 10:36 a.m. alarm going off, back door of the house, could not reach anyone, take no further action, everything was okay. 10:48 a.m. medical call to Kiowa Co Rd, individual had broken his leg really bad and needed an ambulance immediately, advised Burlington first responders and deputy, both are en route, patient is loaded and headed to hospital. 10:40 a.m. keys locked in car at 300 block of N Grand in Carmen, cannot find her keys, must have fallen down by the seat, if they couldn’t come today tomorrow will be fine, advised deputy and he is en route. 12:46 p.m. electric line down at Osage and CR 720, is across highway and road is blocked, deputy advised and en route. November 11, 2012 7:52 p.m. semi stuck in Jet, semi was trying to go through a gate and was stuck with the roadway blocked, deputy advised semi is unstuck and roadway is cleared. 11:48 p.m. medical call to CR 470 and Highway 45, called Woods County and was told it was Carmen and call us, called emergency contact and she advised of location, Woods County advised they will page out ambulance, Life Alert called to advise that it was a false alarm. November 12, 2012 12:43 p.m. stolen grain cross the county line in Alfalfa County, respondent lives in Grant County but the grain was stolen from his property in Alfalfa County, deputy was advised and given the phone number. 7:01 p.m. ambulance needed at 600 block of S Grand in Carmen, individual is a cancer patient and is coughing up blood, advised Carmen first responders and Helena Ambulance, Carmen Rescue headed back to station, Helena was loading patient into ambulance and was fixing to be en route to St. Mary’s. 9:58 p.m. keys locked in car at 200 block of E 12th, advised deputy on his

way, deputy on scene. November 13, 2012 7:10 a.m. minor accident west of Burlington on Highway11, respondent advised a deer hit her vehicle, it will cost over $500, OHP was advised. 11:37 a.m. suspicious container four miles east of old flashing lights, in their work pit, container full of stuff, deputy was advised and en route. November 14, 2012 2:28 a.m. hit a deer six miles west of Carmen on Highway 45, deer struck her on the side of her car, she was okay, just needed to make a report, advised OHP and they were going to send someone out there. November 15, 2012 7:23 a.m. motorist assist at four-way stop north of Cherokee, vehicle sitting in the middle of the road blocking traffic, deputy advised and en route, advised that it is taken care of, a wrecker is en route. 11:08 a.m. alarm sounding at two miles east of corner of 7th and Highway 58, burglary alarm sounding at residence, deputy was advised and en route, advised that individual is there to do work for owner, all is well. 9:54 p.m. needing a ride on Dacoma Rd, respondent called off a phone that had no minutes, dialled 911 just so he could get someone, he advised he was walking down 5th St between Dacoma and Alva, asked if I would call his friend, asked him if he was okay, said he was a long way from home and just really needed a ride, advised Woods County to let them know what was going on and asked if they would go and give him a ride, Woods County advised they were on their way. 10:42 p.m. medical call to 200 block of W 6th in Goltry, Goltry is responding, ambulance has already been notified, ambulance is transporting to St. Mary’s and they are back at station. November 16, 2012 1:23 a.m. transport call to Share, Alva Police Department advised they have an individual at Share Medical Center, is from Jet but walked into Share, would like to speak with officer about transport, deputy advised he will be transporting individual to Ft. Supply. 9:29 a.m. spilled water in front of house, respondent advised a trailer is lying on its side in front of her house, deputy was advised and en route, tank

fell off the pickup bed, no accident. 1:36 p.m. minor accident on bridge west of Jet, respondent was on a bridge and another semi came on the bridge and hit his mirror, he went to the east side of Jet where he could park his truck, OHP was advised. 10:49 p.m. possible accident west of Ingersoll, there are vehicles on the south side of the road, thinks there may have been an accident, advised deputy, two vehicles in the ditch, does not think it is an accident, deputy advised that the vehicle had hit a deer, they did not want to file a report. Online condolences may be made at whartonfuneralchapel.com. Eugene Allan Morrow was born July 2, 1935, in Alva to Clifford and Louise (Sutton) Morrow. He passed away November 17, 2012 in Enid, Oklahoma. He graduated from Hardtner schools in 1953 and enlisted in the Marine Corp in 1955 where he was stationed in Japan. On May 14, 1966 he married Mary Ann Hagin. In 1968 Gene re-enlisted, this time in the Navy. After 20 years of service

to our country he retired in 1978. Gene moved back to Oklahoma in 1983 and raised his family in Alva. He is preceded in death by his wife, his parents, and a brother, David. Gene is survived by two sons and three daughters; Donnie and his wife Marci Morrow of Anna, Texas; Jason and his wife Judy Morrow of Ralston, Brenda Morrow–Kerns of Chandler, Texas; Felicia Ellette and her husband Robert of Anadarko, and Sherry Morrow of Tyler, Texas, seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren, his brother, Charles Morrow and his wife Donna of Alva; an uncle, George Sutton and his wife Joan of Hardtner, Kansas, his aunt, Lela Mae McIlwain of Arlington Heights, Illinois, and a longtime friend, Reta Faye Lancaster of Alva,. Memorial contributions may be made in his memory to his love fund through Wharton Funeral Chapel.
