Long road ahead of the Goldbugs By Leslie Nation Backed by a stacked coaching staff, Head Coach Bruce Dollar enters his third year leading a young Goldbug team into a new season. Despite the Alva Goldbugs being led by a wealth of experience players last year, the season started out on shaky ground and came to a heartbreaking end. The team pitted itself against the Christian Heritage Crusaders in the first round of the playoffs and came close to moving on the second round, but were unable to hold off a 21-42 defeat. Though Alva had a talented, experienced and capable team, they ended their season with seven wins and four losses. This time around, the Goldbugs have a very long road ahead and the tough challenge of rebuilding chemistry and accepting their new roles on the team. Seventeen lettermen return for the new season and only four of them saw starting time in past seasons. This is a young, inexperienced team, with five seniors, seven juniors, 10 sophomore and 15 freshmen who will need to step up.
With 21 new faces making up the majority of the roster, Alva will have the challenge of learning each other, and will depend on the experience of some of their teammates to prepare for their opponents. Offense The Alva Goldbugs have lost six starters who were essential to the success of the Goldbugs’ passing and rushing game in the 2013 season and through most of their careers. Having lost five seniors to graduation and one for other reasons, the Goldbugs will have to focus on rebuilding and refitting new players to important positions for the year. One of the most noticeable absences will be in the starting quarterback position held by Ty Hooper for all four years of his career at Alva High School. Hooper was one of three of the departing seniors to become a school record holder. Hooper holds the records for most passing yards in a single season (2,872 yards) and most passing yards in a career (9,759 yards), along with a career high of most touchdowns at 91.
For the new season, Alva will have to depend on two new faces behind center in the QB position. Sophomore Ethan Swanson was the only one to have any experience as a high school quarterback, getting some playing time during Alva’s scrimmages last year, but he suffered a torn ACL during the off-season, which put him out for the year. Junior Travis Costello (6’2” - 180) – who played on the offensive and defensive lines last year – will instead have his chance to showcase his skill as a passer. Another competitor for the QB position will be a new face: sophomore Austin Shklar (5’9” - 135), who will help bring some depth for the Goldbugs. Other key losses in the passing game are seniors Riley Hess and Cade Pfleider, and junior Trevor Johnson. Hess holds the record for receiving yards in a single season (1,339) in 2012 and career (3,740), as well as most receiving touchdowns in a single season 23 in 2012 and 49 for his career. For the 2013 season, Hess averaged over 100

yards a game – 1,161 total yards – and contributed 15 touchdowns for the season. Pfleider contributed in the passing game with the second team high of 689 receiving yards for the season, averaging nearly 70 a game, to go along with his five touchdowns. He was also the second leading rusher with 406 off 66 carries for 10 touchdowns. Johnson was Hooper’s third go-to receiver, as he snatched 16 receptions for 261 yards and two touchdowns during the 2013 season. One receiver – Dalton Manning – who started last season will be returning for the 2014 season, and can offer experience and help with numbers in the passing game. In the rushing game, Alva depended on Cody Jones, who led the team with 784 rushing yards off 145 carries for five touchdowns. Fellow senior Joby Allen was later able to contribute as a rusher for the Goldbugs after recovering from an injury; he contributed
293 total yards and 10 touchdowns for Alva. Now, the Goldbugs have plenty of depth in the running back position possibly depending on the experience of Jon VanBuskirk in the backfield. Other hopefuls for the position are new face and senior Chris Wheeler and sophomores Hayden Colwell, Seth Milledge and Ethan Harzman. Defense Alva will be missing some big experience on the defensive end as well, with 10 starters gone from the roster. Seniors Kory Dietz, Dakota Nusser and Brandon Ellis offered a lot of presence on the field, with a combined total of 140 tackles for the 2013 season. Pfleider was a record holder for Alva High School, getting a career-high of 532 tackles. On the defensive line this year Alva will rely on Terrill Burton, Ridge Hughbanks and Aaron Pierce. In Alva’s secondary, Manning along with Chase Jones, Harzman, VanBuskirk and
Milledge will each offer more experience against their opponents’ offense. Tough Opponents Ahead for the Goldbugs Alva’s season opener will be at home against the Thomas Fay-Custer Terriers with Friday night lights starting at 7 p.m. After falling to the Terriers in their last two face-offs, the Goldbugs’ only advantage over the Terriers will be home field. The Goldbugs’ biggest issue last season was their inability to play a complete game both offensively and defensively throughout the entire four quarters. Hopefully, given time, Alva will be able to maintain some consistency this year. Alva’s three regular season losses came from Thomas, Chisholm and Hennessey in the final game. With a fresh-faced team entering the 2014 season, the Alva Goldbugs will have to focus on their ability to grow and develop through the year to press forward.

By Leslie Nation Paul Duncan enters his fourth year as head coach of the Alva High School Ladybugs’ softball team after ending a pretty spectacular year with an overall record of 25-10 for the 2013 season. While last season Alva was bumped up from Class 2A to 3A, this year the Ladybugs have dropped back to 2A to rejoin long-time rivals the Fairview Lady Yellow Jackets. Alva showed a lot of success last season in Class 3A, going on winning streaks as long as six games. According to OSSAA rankings, the Ladybugs ranked as high as No. 10. Alva was able to reach the Regional Tournament hosted in Perry. Unfortunately, the Ladybugs’ season ended there after a 4-8 loss to Perkins and 0-4 loss to Perry. While the Ladybugs have won over half of their games thus far in the 2014 season, their performance has been up and down. Alva started with a big win at the
Catoosa Festival against Caney Valley 16-1, but followed up with three straight losses. Though the Ladybugs have begun to find a rhythm as a team, they still need to find a consistency in their performance. Part of that lack of rhythm could be attributed to the loss of some key players to the Ladybugs’ success last year. The Alva Ladybugs have lost three starters from last season, as well as four other letterman – seniors Darian Carothers (SS/3B) and Katlin Ramy(LF), and sophomore Tatum Honer (3B/SS). Carothers was the Ladybugs’ shortstop, but was named to the allregional team as a utility player at the end of the season. Now Carothers will be attending Northern Oklahoma College in Tonkawa as a signee for the softball team. Honer, who would have been a junior at Alva High School, transferred to Piedmont. Her absence has been noticed on the field, as she and Carothers were the top two

players in the shortstop position, but junior Natalie Seevers – a returning starter – has done very well taking up the mantle. Last season, the Ladybugs were able to boast some tremendous depth at the pitching mound with four different pitchers in rotation. Three of the four return this year, with an upcoming freshman added to the mix. Sophomore Lexi Shafer sealed a spot as the starting pitcher due to her performance last year, but consistency and accuracy on the mound has been an issue. Whitney Randall has been out lately due to injuries and has not seen a lot of time on the mound or on the field. Upperclassman N. Seevers spent the summer recovering from a torn ACL during the basketball season, and while she has been cleared to play she is not at her full 100 percent. Despite that, her speed and fielding ability have been a huge help for the Ladybugs at the shortstop position, and she made a huge difference for Alva at the Woodward Softball Tournament as a closing pitcher. Freshman Camryn Wren has been one of the biggest surprises for the team in the starting lineup. As a starting pitcher for the Alva Middle School Ladybugs during her eighth-grade year, Wren improved tremendously to add both depth and competition for the starting pitcher’s mound. Her speed as a fielder allows her to be an asset in the infield as well. Other returning starters include seniors Patricia Beeler, Chesney Fouts and Kally Gordon, and sophomore Ally Riley. Beeler has taken up her position from last season as the second baseman, while both Gordon and Fouts try different spots. Coach Duncan has said that health is the biggest issue for the Ladybugs right now and Gordon is another who has spent the summer recovering from an ACL tear suffered at close to the same time as N. Seevers’. Both have been cleared to play and Gordon has switched between the shortstop and first base positions. While Fouts was one of the few infielders who never changed from her position at first base last year, this season Fouts has seen a lot of playing time as centerfielder. Riley has taken up her position behind the plate as the starting catcher and has been one of the key players both offensively and defensively for the Ladybugs. In the Woodward Softball Tournament alone, Riley proved herself to be a heavy hitter, busting four home runs out of the
park – two of them grand slams. Other returning lettermen who have moved up into starting positions are Cathy Mapes at right field, Rozlynn Murrow at third base and Allison Seevers at left field. Though Murrow did not get to start last season, she saw some substantial playing time, and A. Seevers, in the role of courtesy runner, showcased her speed and ability as a base runner last season. Though Duncan boasted a good balance of upper- and under-classmen last season, this year the Ladybugs are loaded with young players – many with a lot of potential. Six sophomores (Mapes, Shannon Nesseralla, Randall, Riley, A. Seevers and Shafer) along with five freshmen (Cassie Drew, Kaleigh Henke, Hannah O’Neil, Shadi Nettles and Wren) make up the roster. Of the upper-classmen, four seniors can help provide leadership (Beeler, Fouts, Gordon and Braylyn Graybill) along with three juniors (Cede Kirkhardt, Murrow and N. Seevers). While the Ladybugs have struggled through this new season, they have revealed their maturity, determination and ability to win games as of late. Though their record is 13-8 and they’re currently ranked at No. 17 in the OSSAA rankings, the Ladybugs are still lacking in consistency, control and accuracy in some areas of their game. Their ability to adapt and accept their new roles on the field will show if they can improve as they move forward through the season.

‘Young and eager’ Alva football team enters 2014 season
By Leslie Nation Alva Middle School head football coach Cody Hooper is entering his second year at the helm, working to develop a “young and eager” team, along with Assistant Coach Pete Phillips. Now, with the first year notched and last year’s eighth-grade team graduated to high school, Hooper will have some fresh faces to go along with the experience of his new eighth-grade class. Offensively, the Goldbugs show a lot of promise for the season and look solid. Led behind the center by Mitchell Meyer in the quarterback position, Meyer has shown his versatility as a passer and runner. Meyer has tremendous speed behind the scrimmage line, and can scramble away from pressure or put on the jets for some needed yardage. Alva is also able to rely on Tristan Swonger, Levi Balentine and Baylor Rust as running backs, and they have been especially effective in the split back position. As for the passing game, Meyer will have to continue to develop along with his receivers to be a threat in the long-range game. In the short game, Meyer relies on Carson Gaisford and Balentine for the short pass near the sidelines. Defensively, Alva will have to work on anticipation and defending against the run. That will come with time, but they must also learn how to distinguish threats on the opposite side of the ball. Arturo Cisneros and Austin Ferguson are both able to plug up the middle to stop the running game, while Meyer and Balentine have great speed enabling them to get behind enemy lines and rush the quarterback. The Goldbugs opened up their season at home against Mooreland with a 1216 defeat. They have two more home games scheduled: Woodward on Sept. 25 and Enid’s sev2014 Football Roster enth grade on Sept. AMS softball team focuses on improving fundamentals By Leslie Nation With a new season already underway for the Alva Middle School (AMS) softball team, the Ladybugs are led by a new coaching staff – head coach Margo Hamilton and assistant coach Ladonna Durkee. Losing 10 players from last season’s eighth-grade class – eight of them starters – the Ladybugs will have to work on improving their game through the season and stepping up in key roles both offensively and defensively. Despite that need, coach Hamilton is very positive about this team, and is focusing on improving the team fundamentals for future success. “The team has been working really hard in practice for the last four weeks. We have set individual and team goals to help guide us to a successful season,” Hamilton said. “As the season continues, we hope to improve our softball fundamentals, team unity and our record.” The Ladybugs had a real shaky start
to their season with three straight losses, but followed that up with back-to-back wins. With very little time with this young group, Hamilton has some solid goals for her team to focus on moving forward. Hallee Durkee is the lone returning starter who switched off between third base and shortstop. This time around, Durkee will be the starting pitcher for the Ladybugs; she s familiar with the mound after providing some relief for the varsity and sometimes starting for junior varsity. Other starters on the field are Aspen Warren at catcher, Caitlin Hofen at first base, Kimberly Vo at second, Dru Bryant at shortstop, Ali Harzman at third, Laney Stewart at left field, Saydy Graybill at centerfield, and Stephanie Spellman at right field. depth in dire situations. Thankfully, those have been few and far between, though Graybill and Hofen have both provided relief when needed. Graybill has proven both strong and capable at the mound as the starting pitcher for JV. The Ladybugs have struggled some at bat, unable to take advantage of some hits or errors made by their opponents. But defensively it has been a greater struggle for them to prevent making fundamental mistakes in the infield. With time and experience, this should improve through the season. The Ladybugs have three straight road games coming up and then a final home game as they host Enid on Sept. 16 at 6 p.m. at the Alva Recreational Complex.

Defending state champs, Cherokee Chiefs, excited to start new season By Leslie Nation The Cherokee Chiefs enter the 2014 season as defending Class C state champs riding an undefeated record and hoping for similar results this season. With his seventh year as the Chiefs’ head coach bringing an impressive record for his football team (54-16), Bryce Schanbacher feels confident about the team heading into the new season. Schanbacher is assisted by George Weve and Matt Guffy. The Chiefs have eight returning lettermen to kick off their season – six of them in starting positions last year. Offensively, senior Tanner Bowman will return to his quarterback position adding some veteran experience and leadership

behind starting center Kolby Gilley. Bowman will, of course, have his options for the air game with fellow senior and tight end Trey Salinas and wide receivers Avery Bagenstos and Corbin Hutchison. Other key players for the Chiefs are tight end Caleb Roberts and running back Dakota Knabe for their ground game, along with Nicholas Cochran at the full back position and offensive lineman Grant Wilber. Schanbacher has lost four starters from the 2013 season, and important offensively were tight end Chris Klick and tailback Tanner Ducotey. Another presence that will be missed on the line is Zach James – a lineman on both sides of the ball. Defensively, Cherokee lost a key player in their secondary: Alex Castro, who was their linebacker, now plays for Northwestern Oklahoma State University in his familiar role. However, the Chiefs have some returning starters in defensive end Hunter Jordan and cornerback Austin Guffy. Other key returning players are two linebackers who will see time on offense for the running game: Knabe and Cochran. Despite some important losses, Schanbacher’s expectations are not dampened; he expresses confidence in the abilities of his current team. “We have an experienced offensive line and veteran quarterback to provide a solid foundation,” Schanbacher said. “Defensively, we are pretty solid as well, and should be pretty stout.” The Cherokee Chiefs start out their season with two games on the road: Pioneer on Sept. 5 and then Buffalo on Sept. 12. They follow those games with back-to-back home games, hosting Tyrone on Sept. 19 and Waynoka on Sept. 26. The Chiefs will need to maintain their focus on one opponent at the time, although it will be hard for them stem their hunger, as they have high expectations for the new season. “We are very excited to be back this season. This is a tremendous group of young men and they want nothing but the best,” Schanbacher said.

Munholland starts her first year as Lady Chiefs’ new head coach By Leslie Nation With the new season underway, Cherokee’s softball team has a new coach at the helm. Rebekah Munholland has begun her first year with the Lady Chiefs after a split season in 2013. Greg Jantzen returns to assist Munholland with her new team. Last season, the Lady Chiefs finished their year with a record of 10-14 in Class B under then head coach Stephanie Hines. At the end of last year’s regular season, the team went on to district tournament play. Their face-off with Kremlin-Hillsdale resulted in a 3-14 loss, but their next game, against Timberlake, was a 6-3 win, keeping their postseason alive. But another match-up with Kremlin ended in a 6-10 defeat, rounding out the Lady Chiefs’ season. Though four seniors (Brianna Wilhite, Mollie Hawkins, Macy Starks and Kylee Corr) left the lineup, Cherokee returns five starters to the field to give the young team
some much needed experience and leadership. A lone senior – Nicole Unruh – returns to a new season behind the plate as catcher, along with junior Dakota Yandle at left field and two sophomores Ralyn Waugh (second base) and Jacey Jantzen (third base). Last year, the Lady Chiefs were led by a new pitcher, as they lost their starting pitcher the previous year. Junior Kiera Roberts returns to the mound to help the Lady Chiefs improve upon their record. Cherokee has struggled thus far this season, with its current record at 3-6 behind the pace of last season, but improvement upon their record is still possible. A lot of this has to do with inexperience at the moment. While five starters return, four others are having to step up in their respective positions. The Lady Chiefs are currently overrun with eight freshmen in the lineup. Hopefully, this could lead to some depth See Focus Page 20 to positions as

they gain more experience. Despite a struggle out the gate, Munholland remains positive about the team. “Being the new coach in Cherokee, I am so proud of my girls. They work hard every day, and give me everything they got,” Munholland said. “They are a wonderful group of girls, and I couldn’t ask for better.” The Lady Chiefs continue their season at the Cimarron Tournament Sept. 4-6, followed by a road game in Medford Sept. 9 at 4:30 p.m. In their next home game Sept. 11, they will host the Fairview Lady Yellow Jackets.

Medicine Lodge Indians look to improve upon last season
By Leslie Nation In his second year as head coach of the Indians, Josh Ybarra has a huge desire to keep the Medicine Lodge High School football team moving forward from last season. “Our main goal is to always move forward. Keep improving on what we have accomplished in the past,” coach Ybarra said. “Last season was a step forward, but it is time to take a bigger step. We want to compete with everyone we play and we want to win games.” That’s the goal in a nutshell, and coming off a record of 3-6 in the 2013 season it is a reasonable one. The Indians see some key departures from last year in starting quarterback Scott Beecher, who rushed for 1,500 yards and passed for 700, and three offensive lineman. Those linemen are Scott Angell (whom Ybarra described as their “most experience lineman”); Justin Briles, their leading tackler; and Anthony Schmidt. Despite those losses, 13 lettermen are returning to the field for Medicine Lodge – eight starting on the offensive side and seven on defense. “We are losing some players to graduation who were a big part of our team last season, and we have to find guys who are willing to step up to the challenge and accept their role on this team,” Ybarra said. For the quarterback position, Ybarra has two possible choices to add some depth in that position for the team. Junior Ethan Hargett (6’3” - 157) might be an obvious choice; he has more experience at the high school level than freshmen Drew Honas, but Hargett is easily able to switch to wide receiver position if necessary. Options for go-to in the passing game are wide receivers Nick Noland (5’9” - 152) and Micah Richert (5’10” - 157), and tight end Aaron Woodward (6’ - 187). Covering from the ground will be Gage Axline as the Indian’s starting running back, but he could get some relief from both Noland and Richert. Those adding more depth to the position are juniors Austin Murphy and Riley Combs, and sophomore Zach Gehrer. On the line for both sides of the ball for Medicine Lodge is returning senior Erich Fischer (6’6” - 190) and returning juniors Darrek McGrath (5’10” - 221), Sergio Marquez (6’1” - 252) and Thad Ehresman (6’1” - 245) – all good choices to help fill those empty positions. Other linemen who will help are sophomores Wyatt Richardson, Deagan McGrath, Dewey Doze and Zack Barker. Defensively, most of the Indians’ offensive players will have to pull their weight on the other side of the ball as well. While the linemen are pretty set, Woodward, Axline, Hargett, Noland and Richert all See Indians Page 24 will see some playing

time in the secondary. Coach Ybarra believes that a lot of the Indians’ success this year will stem from how hungry they are both in practice and through the season. That will soon become evident, as their first game is on the road against Belle Plains on Sept. 5 followed by two home games against Conway Springs (Sept. 12) and Douglass (Sept. 19). “Our schedule is going to be tough again this season, and if we do not step up to the challenge and work hard this off-season, we will have a tough season,” Ybarra said. “All of what I am saying pertains to the players and the coaches. We as coaches have to keep pushing and progressing as well. Nobody who is a part of this program can be complacent for one second or else we will start sliding backwards.”

Rangers move a step closer to D-II membership By Leslie Nation Northwestern Oklahoma State University (NWOSU) has started its third and final provisional year in NCAA Division II to gain full membership in the Great American Conference (GAC). The 2013 football season didn’t quite live up to the expectations of Ranger head football coach Alan Hall. When the Rangers finished up the 2012 season (their first year in the GAC), they had ended on a high note with four consecutive wins. Coach Hall had hoped to ride that momentum into the 2013 season, but instead the Rangers suffered a seven-game losing streak. Though the 2-9 overall record from last season may seem like a huge step back for the football program – still in its infancy in the GAC, that record doesn’t quite represent their improvement. Faced with a full roster of GAC opponents and a tough battle with the powerhouse Pittsburg State, the Rangers had a tougher schedule for their second year in D-II play. Hall is very aware what this year means for Northwestern moving forward into full membership, and the necessity
for improvement. “We can’t use [the schedule] as a crutch anymore,” Hall said. “Now that we’ve seen all these new opponents, we know what to expect and can move forward. This is our third year. A lot of these kids have been here three years, so it’s time for us to stand on our own two feet.” Northwestern began the transition from the NAIA to D-II in the 2012 season, when Hall was in his first year in the head coaching position. After two years of putting an emphasis on building the team with freshman recruits, Coach Hall is excited about the talent. “We’re excited about the level of athleticism that we’ll have,” Hall said. “This is probably the best collection of talent that we’ve had over there since we’ve been here.” Offense Points were hard to come by for the Northwestern Rangers during the 2013 season; they only scored a total of 183 points against their opponents. The only blowout victory for the Rangers’ came on the road against Southern Nazarene (6217). For redshirt freshman quarterback
Reid Miller, his starting debut was no less of an uphill battle complicated with fighting concussion injuries through the season. Playing only seven games – six of those as a starter – Miller did not put up great numbers in the QB position, completing only 45.9 percent of his passes, throwing six interceptions and only four touchdowns. Miller threw for a total of 765 yards, and averaged 109.3 yards per game. He does show promise in being a versatile quarterback, showing a decent running game as the third leading rusher for the Rangers with a total of 212 yards for three touchdowns. Now that Miller has a season of hands-on experience as Northwestern’s QB, he should be better prepared to face his sophomore year. “You can sit and watch somebody for a year and pick up little things, like habits and preparation, but until you actually go through it for yourself for a year, you don’t know what it’s like,” Hall said. “Now he’s been through it and understands the level that he has to be at, and so now he’s preparing himself at a much higher level.”

Rangers
Two other good prospects for the QB position who will offer some depth for the Rangers are junior transfer Cody Weizenheimber and freshman Ty Hooper – a former starting quarterback for the Alva Goldbugs. Along with Miller, Hall has four other returning starters to go with 12 returning lettermen on the offensive side of the ball. This added experience will contribute a great deal to Northwestern’s progress. While Javari Liggins, Northwestern’s starting running back and leading rusher (who netted 682 yards for the season and seven touchdowns), will not be joining the Rangers on the roster, sophomore Jarion Tudman and junior Zachry Doyle will return as steady producers in the running game. Tudman was the second leading rusher for Northwestern, averaging 41.8 yards a game and adding another seven touchdowns to Liggins’. Doyle ran for just under 200 yards and one touchdown in the 2013 season, averaging 23.4 yards per game. Despite losing six of their top receivers of last season (Mervin Stewart, Davontaa Bryant, Jeremi Anderson, Montrell Logan, Cameron Allen and Liggins), Miller still has good targets for the passing game, though they’re slightly inexperienced.
The seventh leading receiver, sophomore Reginald Harris, caught for 102 yards last year and co-led with Stewart for the team-high touchdowns with two. Another promising receiver to help attack Rangers’ opponents in the air is Justin Schanbacher, the former Cherokee Chiefs quarterback. Schanbacher exhibited some great highlights as a receiver toward the end of the season, with four catches for 58 yards and a touchdown over the course of three games. Other prospects for receivers are freshman DaShawn Gordon, transfer Stanford Rozar and other high school signees, such as Riley Hess (Alva), Micah Kee (Woodward) and Caleb Webster (Claremore). Defense Northwestern opponents averaged 45.2 points per game last season – nearly 500 total points against the Ranger defense. While it was a disappointing performance for the year, Coach Hall sees this as an opportunity for improvement. They will need that optimism to move forward in the 2014 season. The Rangers are returning nine starters for defense, along with nine other returning lettermen, giving their defense experience and awareness of what to expect from another stacked GAC schedule. All four defensive linemen return, led by se-
nior Jeremy Gutierrez with 43 tackles and three sacks and junior Donavan Guidry (31 tackles and two sacks). Returning with a year of experience under their belts are sophomores Jacoby Beasley (33 tackles and one sack) and Theodis Williams. For Northwestern’s secondary, five starters return from 2013, including an Honorable Mention All-GAC linebacker Alex Hemberger, who had the second team-high in tackles of 66 and snatched two interceptions. Another returning Honorable Mention is junior Derrick Thompson, a linebacker who picked up 65 tackles and an interception last season. Hall has a few other transfers and high school signees to work with on the defensive end in Devouris Means, David Boatright, Teofilio Freeman and Zach DeVore. While the 2013 season was filled with unmet expectations for both coaches and players, the Rangers will start 2014 year with a clean slate. The goal and focus for Northwestern is to move forward and continue to improve. With the necessary experience gained for last year’s freshman potential, the Rangers will have to be both physically and mentally prepared to face some no-lesstalented GAC teams.

Chieftains top backs return to put up some more big numbers By Leslie Nation Head Coach Tim Rector enters his third year at the helm for the South Barber Chieftains with an overall record of 15-6. As the new season gets close to start, the Chieftains will try to ride their momentum into 2014 – the team is coming off a record of 8-3, and remained undefeated against district opponents (District 4, 4-0) and league opponents (Heart of the Plains, 5-0). The Chieftains lose only two top graduates from last season – Eli Corino and Taylor Donaldson – with six returning starters. Two of the top returning starters on the offensive end are seniors Peyton Yandel as quarterback and Dylan Allison in the running back position. Yandel blew his 2012 season numbers out of the water in 2013, completing 67 of his 133 passes for 1,231 yards, 18 touchdowns and only six interceptions. Proving yet again that he is just as much a threat in the running game as in the passing, Yandel ran for 1,620 yards and a total of 32 touchdowns – both a team-high for the Chieftains. Yandel’s fellow senior, Allison continued to be just as much of a threat last season, surpassing his 600 rushing yards and 11 touchdowns from 2012 with 1,486 yards and 20 touchdowns. Coach Rector once used the word “shifty” to describe the tailback, and that seems to be an accurate description, as he averaged almost 10 yards a carry. Allison was also one of Yandel’s go-to receivers, as he recorded 34 receptions for 544 yards and 10 touchdowns. With the loss of receivers Kale Girty and Corino, Yandel will have to depend on some younger players, such as sophomore Gavin Doherty and freshmen Trae Rathgeber and Dakota Vickers. Senior Grant Cantrell will also be needed in the passing game as a tight end to add more depth. Two offensive lineman – Tyler Martin (5’9” - 190) and Kolton Pavlu (5’9” - 190) – return to the line as well. While the Chieftains have a lot of talent and weapons, their limited depth and their size on the line is a concern for coach Rector.
2014 SOUTH BARBER HIGH SCHOOL CHIEFTAINS – Front row, left to right: Trae Rathgeber, Dakota Vickers, Kadin Banks and Kolby Pavlu. Middle row, left to right: Spencer Kimmell, Gavin Doherty, Grant Cantrell, Justin McLeod, Joseph Bowden and William Lopez. Back row, left to right: Head Coach Tim Rector, Ryan Hill, Hugo Cardenas, Peyton Yandel, Tyler Martin, Bryce Roberts, Dylan Allison, Kolton Pavlu, KJ Graber and Assistant Coach Matt Cantrell. “We will be counting on some younger kids due to the lack of kids,” said coach Rector. “We are looking to improve our defense to take us to the next level.” Defensively, Rector will depend on Cantrell, Martin and Kolton Pavlu on the line, Allison and Spencer Kimmell at the linebacker positions, corner backs Rathgeber and Yandel, and Doherty at the free safety. The Season Get Underway Coach Rector and assistant coach Matt Cantrell look to improve last year's 8-3 record, and hope to make it further into the playoffs during the postseason. The Chieftains start out their season at home against Pratt Skyline on Sept. 5, followed by a road game against Oxford on Sept. 12

Lady Chieftains volleyball rides momentum into new season By Leslie Nation Steve Roberts enters his 22nd year as the head coach for the South Barber High School volleyball team as the Lady Chieftains come off an impressive 2013 season with a record of 22-12. This adds to an already remarkable overall record for Coach Roberts, making it 422-285. Last season, the Lady Chieftains had plenty of experience and they're not lacking in that this season either, with six returning starters back on the roster. Those starters include Bailey Roberts, Nicole Blick, Taylor McCullough and Kassidy Clark, with Anna Perez and Alexis Shaffer in the starting rotation often seeing some substantial playing time. Coach Roberts mentioned that two top newcomers to the team who will add depth and competitiveness are Emily Rugg and Madison Polson. “We need to play well as a team,” said Roberts of his expectations for the team. “It is going to take everybody to come in and do their work if we’re going to have a successful season.” Assistant Coach Sammi Inman joins Roberts as they and the team prepare to get into the thick of the season. South Barber opened at home on Aug. 30 and have just two more home games, scheduled for Sept. 16 and Sept. 23.
