By Roger McKenzie Eight road crossing permits were approved during a short Alfalfa County Commissioners’ meeting on Monday. Four were requested by Rodco Services. Three in were District 2 and one was in District 1. Crescent Services requested the other four—two in District 1 and one each in District 2 and District 3. Two private property access easements were approved in District 3. The commissioners also gave their okay for County Clerk Bruce Martin to advertise for six-month bids on materials and equipment the county may need from time to time. A fund transfer to allow the county to recoup money it spend
on bridge materials for a newly completed bridge west of Cherokee in District 2 was also approved. The transfer allows the $52,542.71 to become available again for county use in other projects. An oil/gas lease on two county-owned acres near Jet was formally approved and signed Monday. The contract had been approved, but not signed the previous week. It calls for Chesapeake Exploration to lease the land for three years and pay $500 per acre and a 3/16ths royalty on any finds there. In a matter put on the agenda by Commissioner Chad Roach, the board agreed to check into other insurance sources for county employees. The county’s current
health provider is Health Choice. “I’d like to do some price checking,” said Roach. “He noted that a District 2 employee has medical bills which are not being paid promptly by the insurance carrier. That employee also has incurred more out of pocket expense than county insurance specifies. Roach also noted that he wasn’t picking on Health Choice in general. He admitted the incidents could be simply “isolated instances.” In other business, the commissioners approved minutes of their previous meeting, maintenance and operations warrants for payment, blanket purchase orders, and miscellaneous officers reports.

Lynn Says
Be alert to two major computer scams By Lynn L. Martin I’ve written about one of these a few times before. But it’s time for a reminder since I fixed another computer this week where somebody ended up with the “You have a virus on your computer. Click here for a free antivirus scan.” This particular scam is getting much harder to fix. The creators of the virus figured out that with only a half-dozen major anti-virus programs on the market, it doesn’t take much code-writing to disable each of those programs. In the past, when one started a computer in “safe” mode, none of the antivirus programs would work. But, the bad programs didn’t work either. Malware Bytes came along and it
would actually run in safe mode. This means the evil virus couldn’t stop Malware Bytes from detecting it and wiping it out. Well, this week the fake “you have a virus” warning ALSO ran in safe mode. Never before have I seen that. This means it blocked Malware Bytes from performing its repairs. Turns out, Microsoft’s FREE “Security Essentials” was capable of getting rid of the fake “you have a virus” program. What a relief! By the way, most software reviewers are giving “Security Essentials” very positive marks. The Other Scam “Who Viewed Your Facebook Profile?” is an even more wicked scam. Since Facebook is a “social network,” it attracts many users (only 500 million) who hope to escape their lonely life and have another chance at being popular. After all, most of us were not in the “popular crowd” in high school, and we hope Facebook may allow us a second chance at being one of the cool 10%. It hasn’t worked for me. I was a photo nerd/computer nerd in high school and still am.
Anyway, with our longings of still wanting to be popular, the pitch is almost irresistible: “Find out who’s been checking your Facebook profile.” Wouldn’t it be fun to find out if your high school or college sweetheart you didn’t marry has been checking you out . . . or maybe your ex-spouse. The message that pops up on your Facebook “wall” often appears to be from a friend, but really it is not. Here’s what the Facebook company has to say: “Facebook does not offer a way for members to see who has viewed their profile, nor do we allow applications to provide this information,” says Simon Axten, a company spokesman. When you click “Yes,” you are probably giving scammers access to your Facebook account and everything in it, including your e-mail, physical address, and photos—which may make you a victim of identity theft. Additionally, scammers can capture your “friend” list and then hit them with the same scheme using your name. Also, don’t fall for the variation of this scam that permits you to see who has rejected your friend request. That information is simply not available.

Let’s have a safe and accident free harvest.
15 harvest safety tips include:
--Turn off equipment when working around it. Turn the tractor off every time you get off. --Stay hydrated. Take a jug of water with you. --Take periodic breaks from doing repetitive tasks. --Complete a thorough safety check on all equipment before you use it. --Wear sunscreen and a hat. --Make sure all shields and guards are in place on your equipment. Replace those that are worn or missing. --Make sure your Slow Moving Vehicle emblem is visible and properly placed. --Carry a charged cell phone with you. --Make sure someone knows what field you're in, and that you have set a time you'll return home. --Don't wear loose fitting clothes. They can become entangled in moving equipment such as a PTO shaft. --Never allow extra riders. One seat on a tractor means one person should be on that tractor. --Have rollover protective structures (ROPS) installed on all tractors. --Wear your seatbelt (only on ROPS equipped tractors). --Be considerate of traffic when you're on the road with your equipment.
Safety Tips for Motorists Our legislature has laws in place favoring farm equipment on our highways. Harvest only lasts a short amount of time so you can be patient. ALWAYS slow down when seeing obvious farm equipment on the roads. Big grain hauling trucks cannot stop on a dime. Be kind and be safe.

Speed’s 3rd grade class has book published By Yvonne Miller The third grade class of 2011 at South Barber Elementary will probably never forget they had a book published – and they’ll definitely never forget their teacher Tia Speed. Mrs. Speed had her students combine all their subjects such as reading, writing, science experiments and art to research penguins and compile a book. The teacher worked with an educational publishing company to accomplish the project. Did you know there are 17 different types of penguins? They range in types from the King and African to the Fairy. Everything you want to know about penguins lies in those pages. Each child research a type of penguin and wrote about it. Each students’ research is featured on a page in the book in story form along with their own illustration. Student Desiree Doherty had the honor of having her illustration featured on the book cover “The students did an amazing job of writing,” Mrs. Speed said. She said the cross-curriculum showed the children how one subject works with the other. Earlier in the year, Mrs. Speed had her class make a newspaper they featured on their class website. One project at the end of year had Mrs. Speed leading her class on a walking tour of Kiowa, pointing out pieces of history in the community. While interviewing Mrs. Speed and her students about the penguin book, it’s apparent the youngsters love their teacher as much as she loves them. The news their beloved teacher was
leaving at the end of the year made students sad. She and her husband returned to Texas to be closer to family and for his new job with an oil company. At the end of school spring music program, the third graders dedicated a song, “Remember Me,” to Mrs. Speed. That moment turned on the water faucets for most.
Tia Speed and her 3rd grade students at South Barber have fun as they celebrate their published book on penguins: Adrienne Allison, Takira Blick, Gage Cantrell, Desiree Doherty, Maddison Dotts, C.J. George, Dalton Hess, Hannah McCullough, Malayna McKitrick, McKenna Reeves, Trevor Rooks, Rachel Rupp, Anna Unger, Makenzie Watts, Georgiana Wilhelm. Photo by Yvonne Miller
Amorita Class of 1949 celebrates 62nd reunion By Samantha Smith The Amorita Class of 1949 celebrated their 62nd class reunion Sunday, May 22. The class members met at the Cherokee Station in Cherokee, Oklahoma, for Sunday dinner. Afterward, the former classmates retired to Ray and Imogene Smith’s house in Amorita, Oklahoma, for an enjoyable afternoon of laughter and reminiscence.
