Alfalfa commissioners agree to help Fair Board with dirt work By Roger McKenzie As the Alfalfa County Fair Board moves on with its planned improvements to the county fairgrounds, dirt work will have to be done. Instead of hiring an outside company to do that work, the board asked the county to do it. The Alfalfa County commissioners agreed to do just that at their meeting on Monday. Fair Board member Rick Croft made the request which will help lower costs on the improvements—a new community building, a concession stand, and restrooms. The commissioners agreed to add Rhonda Poland as a requisitioning officer for the Carmen Responders. The same group asked the commissioners via a letter for permission to bid on a ladder truck that has become surplus at the Alva Fire Department. If the bid is successful, the money to pay for the truck will come from the sale tax revenues set aside by the county for
the Carmen Fire Department. In addition to approving minutes, and maintenance and operations warrants for payment, the commissioners also approved payroll warrants for the county employees. Normally that is done on the last business day of the month, but Thursday’s scheduled Alfalfa County commissioner’s meeting was cancelled so that commissioner’s might be able to attend a meeting of the Association of County Commissioners of Oklahoma (ACCO) in Norman.
Hatfield Park cleanup didn’t finish painting
Volunteers needed this Friday
The Big Event took place in Hatfield Park last Saturday, but it isn’t over. Northwestern students came together to clean up the park by picking up trash, roofing, landscaping and more. Unfortunately, the weather kept the students from painting the fence and playground equipment. The painting has now been resched-
uled to this Friday, April 1. Because of this change, the students are in need of volunteers. The only labor involved is scraping and repainting the equipment. There is a lot to paint and anyone who can help is invited! The painting will start on Friday at 1 p.m. and is estimated to be finished by 5 p.m. depending on the number of volunteers. Volunteers are asked to meet at the gazebo for instructions and supplies. Any help from the community would be greatly appreciated!

Registered voters in Alfalfa County who want to vote by mail absentee ballot in next Tuesday’s Regular Municipal General Elections for the Towns of Carmen, Helena, Jet and City of Cherokee Ward 1 and Ward 2 have missed the application deadline, County Election Board Secretary Kelly Stein said today. “They aren’t out of luck, however,” Stein said. Voters who want to cast absentee ballots still can do so at the County Election Board office on Friday, April 1, or Monday, April 4. A two-member, bipartisan Absentee Voting Board will be on duty each day from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. to assist absentee voters. “In-person absentee voters fill out an application form when they get to the office. They are not required to give a reason for voting absentee,” Stein said. “They are required to swear that they have not voted a regular mail absentee ballot and that they will not vote at their polling places on election day.” According to Stein, the Absentee Voting Board verifies a voter’s registration information, then issues the voter’s ballots. The voter marks the ballots in a voting booth and then puts them in the voting device. “It is very much like voting at a precinct polling place,” said Stein. Freedom Public School certified personnel have contracts renewed By Roger McKenzie All 12 of Freedom Public School’s certified personnel had their contracts renewed at the school board’s meeting Monday night. Some of them, however, may not know exactly what or who they will be teaching, however. That’s because Superintendent Richard Gleave’s recommendation, after a 90-minute executive session with the board members to discuss the employment status of the 12, was to hire the teachers without making assignments. Those will come later as the school board and administration wrestle with how to divvy up teachers and students. In his administrative report, Supt. Gleave noted that preliminary enrollment numbers for next year shows that the high school should grow. Most of that growth, however, is because of eighth graders moving into the ninth grade. The high school’s gain is a loss for the pre-kindergarten through eighth grade. Low numbers projected for students entering pre-kindergarten won’t help. Of course, any move-ins will be helpful and the district is hoping for some more foreign exchange students. However, the lower grades will be small. Just how to teach those grades, whether to combine some of them, and who will teach them are questions that can’t all be answered now. That’s why no teaching assignments were made when the contracts were renewed.
One position has yet to be filled. The district received its accreditation report and is fully accredited, with one deficiency for not having a certified media specialist. The retirement of the school’s certified media specialist last year left a hole that will be filled next year with a part-time media specialist and a full-time aide. Supt. Gleave said that would eliminate the deficiency. This is a busy time for the school with a lot extra curricular activities, trips, and end of school testing filling up the school’s calendar. As the pace heats up for the final days of school, Supt. Gleave noted that “there are a lot of concerns about the future” being discussed at the state capitol. He noted that the emphasis on consolidation appears to be declining while the new focus appears to be on administrative costs. Supt. Gleave has recently taken on more responsibilities that may help Freedom and small schools like it have a bigger voice in education matters. He is the director of District Two of the Oklahoma Association of School Administrators (OASA). That district covers northwest Oklahoma east of the Panhandle, including Ringwood, Laverne, Shattuck and other schools in that area besides Freedom. Gleave told the board Monday that he has asked Rep. Jeff Hickman if he can serve on a taskforce looking into administrative costs and effectiveness as an administrator representing school
districts with less than 1,000 students. Board members were invited to take a look at the school’s new website which is now up. The site can be accessed at www.freedom.k12.ok.us. The new site will be a valuable communication tool between the school and parent, Gleave noted. In her report, Principal Charla Gleave noted that the teachers can use a free application called “Moodle” to add their own web pages to the website, complete with links to extra learning resources. In other action at the meeting, the board members approved three fund transfers totaling less than $350. They approved the Consent Agenda which included minutes of the previous meeting, activity fund expenditures and encumbrances.
OCU Dean’s List names three locals Oklahoma City University has named three local students to its Dean’s List honor roll for the fall 2010 semester. From Alva are Andrew Holder and Ryan M Wiebener, and from Fairview is Andrea R Hamand. Students must complete a minimum of 12 credit hours during a semester to meet the honor roll requirements and maintain a GPA of 3.5 for the Dean’s Honor Roll. Sen. Tom Coburn tells it like it is! By Lynn L. Martin This is a portion of Oklahoma Senator Tom Coburn’s speech to the U.S. Senate when another round of funding appeared as part of President Obama’s stimulus packages. Sen. Tom Coburn is an MD (general practitioner) and Senator from Oklahoma, and he’s recognized as ‘the conscience’ of the U.S. Senate. He is well respected on both sides of the aisle and is probably one of the few senators to actually read these ‘bail-out’ bills. This is from his speech in the Senate and it should raise your blood pressure. “We are going in exactly the wrong direction. We ought to be standing on the principles that made this country great. There ought to be a review of every program in the Federal Government that is not effective, that is not efficient, that is wasteful or fraudulent, and we ought to get rid of it right now. We ought to say, you’re gone, to be able to pay for a real stimulus plan that might, in fact, have some impact. “I would be remiss if I didn’t remind everybody that next week we are going to hear from the Obama administration wanting another $500 billion, Outside of this, they are going to want another $500 billion to handle the banking system. Still not fixing the real disease – the pneumonia – we are going to treat the fever or treat the cough, but we are not going to treat the real disease. Until we treat the real disease, this is pure waste. It is worse than pure waste. It is
morally reprehensible, because it steals the future of the next two generations. “I am going to wind up here and finish, but I wanted to spend some time to make sure the American people know what is in this bill. I think once they know what is in this bill, they would reject it out of hand. The biggest earmark in history is in this bill. There is $2 billion in this bill to build a coal plant with zero emissions. “That would be great, maybe, if we had the technology, but the greatest brains in the world sitting at MIT say we don’t have the technology yet to do that. “Why would we build a $2 billion power plant we don’t have the technology for that we know will come back and ask for another $2 billion and another $2 billion and another $2 billion when we could build a demonstration project that might cost $150 million or $200 million? There is nothing wrong with having coal-fired plants that don’t produce pollution; I am not against that. Even the Washington Post said the technology isn’t there. It is a boondoggle. Why would we do that? “Tonight, we eliminated a $246 million payback for the large movie studios in Hollywood . “We are going to spend $88 million to study whether we ought to buy a new ice breaker for the Coast Guard. You know what. The Coast Guard needs a new ice breaker. Why do we need to spend $88 million? They have two ice breakers now that they could retrofit and fix and come up with equivalent to what they needed to and not spend the $1 billion they are going to come back and ask for, for another ice breaker, so why would we spend $88 million
studying that? “We are going to spend $448 million to build the Department of Homeland Security a new building. We have $1.3 trillion worth of empty buildings right now, and because it has been blocked in Congress we can’t sell them, we can’t raze them, we can’t do anything, but we are going to spend money on a new building here in Washington. “We are going to spend another $248 million for new furniture for that building; a quarter of a billion dollars for new furniture. What about the furniture the Department of Homeland Security has now? These are tough times. Should we be buying new furniture? How about using what we have? That is what a family would do. They would use what they have. They wouldn’t go out and spend $248 million on furniture. “How about buying $600 million worth of hybrid vehicles? Do you know what I would say? Right now times are tough; I would rather Americans have new cars than Federal employees have new cars. What is wrong with the cars we have? Dumping $600 million worth of used vehicles on the used vehicle market right now is one of the worst things we could do. Instead, we are going to spend $600 million buying new cars for Federal employees. “There is $400 million in here to prevent STDs. I have a lot of experience with that I have delivered 4,000 babies. We don’t need to spend $400 million on STDs. What we need to do is properly educate about the infection rates and the effectiveness of methods of prevention. That doesn’t take a penny more. ‘Leading Ladies’ bring hysterics to Border Line stage Final performances Saturday and Sunday
A review by Yvonne Miller “Leading Ladies,” is in the lead as one of Border Line Theatre’s funniestever productions. I don’t think I’ve ever attended a Border Line opening night where the crowd laughed almost non-stop throughout the entire production – and there have been some side-splitting plays. One lady with the group from the Homestead in Alva attending Saturday night said she couldn’t quit laughing. And she wasn’t even aware that one couple (Matt and Jenny Cantrell) who play love-interests in the play are married in real life which adds to the humor as they somewhat innocently hug and kiss. The facial expressions, body movements, high-pitched tone of voice, British accents and all the actions of Matt Cantrell and Mick Gillig are as hilarious as the costumes the down-ontheir-luck Shakespearian actors shimmy into to impersonate “nieces” of the dying old lady in an attempt to get her money. Playing that old woman who wears a bathrobe or pajamas much of the time, Doris Herman is as wiry as the curls in her silver wig, when she tells the young people who mostly scramble for her millions they are “nitwits” and puts

Gerald William, son of Amy Ruth (Oliver) and Kenneth Franklin Lamkin was born at home on May 15, 1941 in Alva, Oklahoma. He passed away at St. Mary’s Regional Medical Center in Enid, Oklahoma on the 26th day of March at the age of 69 years, 10 months and 11 days. He attended Blackwell school system and graduated with the class of 1959. Following graduation he enlisted in the United States Air Force and was honorably discharged in 1966. On December 19, 1962 he was united in marriage to Barbara Ann Goodrich in Alva, where they settled and raised their two children, Hollis and Faren. Later on he continued his education in Auto and Diesel Mechanics where he received his teaching certificate from the State of Oklahoma. He went on to teach Diesel Mechanics at the Alva Vo-Tech. He owned and operated L&L Diesel Repair east of Alva he also worked for Kirby Smith Machinery, AIS Continental, and worked with his brother Tom at Triple T Truck and Trailer Repair in Oklahoma City. After retirement he kept busy working part time for the Alva Beaver Express. Mr. Lamkin is preceded in death by his parents and an infant brother. Bill is survived by his wife Barbara of 48 years, a son, Hollis and his wife Laura of Alva, one daughter Faren and her husband Steve Litson of Enid, three Grandsons: Zane, Michael and T.J. , three granddaughters: Kaylin, Kimberly and Shelby, four Great Grandsons and two Great granddaughters. Interment will be in the Alva Municipal Cemetery under the direction of Marshall Funeral Home of Alva. Harvey Allen Harger, son of Jesse and Pearl (Norton) Harger, was born February 15, 1921, in Siloam Springs, Arkansas, and passed away March 26, 2011, at Medicine Lodge, Kansas, at the age of 90 years, 1 month, and 11 days. Harvey enlisted in the United States Navy on November 2, 1940, and served on the USN Pennsylvania. He was honorably discharged because of a disability which he incurred in the line of duty. On July 25, 1943, he was united in marriage to Alta Marie Abbott in Alva. They lived in Sun City, Kansas, where he worked at National Gypsum. In 1997, they moved back to Alva. A couple of years after her death in 2001, he moved to Medicine Lodge, Kansas, to be near his family. He enjoyed spending time with his family and taking care of animals, including dogs, cats, and goats. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Alta Marie; two brothers, two sisters and an infant baby brother. On May 5, 1956 she was married to Alfred Eddy Harth in Derby, Kansas. To their marriage one son, Lannie Dean, was born. Mr. Harth passed away October 2, 2007. Following their marriage they made their home in Wichita, Kansas. In 1971 the family moved to Tucson, Arizona where they raised and raced greyhounds at Tucson Greyhound Park, when they moved back to Alva in 1978 she cleaned houses and local businesses. Mrs. Harth was preceded in death by her parents, two sisters Vera Mae and Virgie Jean. She is survived by her son Lannie, a sister and her husband Joyce and Jack McCray and a brother and his wife Bill and Gail Wilks all of Alva, two sistersin-law, Hazel Wagoner of Wellington, Kansas, Fayetta Acord of Alva; a brotherin-law and his wife, Ben and Nancy Harth of Winfield, Kansas; a number of nieces, nephews other relatives and friends a very special friend Eleanor Pellerin. MARK SCOTT LANSDOWN Mark Scott Lansdown, age 60, of West, Texas, passed away early Sunday morning, March 27, 2011 at M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, Texas. Mark was born December 8, 1950 in Alva, Oklahoma, the son of Irvan G. and Amy Grace (McCrary) Lansdown. He attended schools in Alva and graduated from Alva High School in 1969 prior to attending Northwestern Oklahoma State University. He was united in marriage to Yvonne Kubala on April 26, 1975 in Alva. Mark was a building equipment mechanic for the United States Postal Service for almost 30 years before retiring in 2009. Prior to that he worked with his father building and remodeling homes. Mark enjoyed working with his plants, barbecuing, and just being outdoors. He especially loved watching college football with his father and sons. Mark is preceded in death by his father and a nephew, Brian Paris. Survivors include his beloved wife of 35 years, Yvonne Lansdown of West. Texas, three sons, Eric and Jeremy both of Dallas, Texas, and Trevor and wife Audm of Bryan. BONNIE RUTH MINTON SMITH Bonnie Ruth Minton Smith, age 89, of rural Beaver County, Oklahoma, and a resident of Share Nursing Home in Alva, Oklahoma, passed away Saturday, March 26, 2011. The daughter of Omer and Jennie Minton, she was born on November 17, 1921, in Beaver County, Oklahoma. The Minton family homesteaded land seven miles west and four miles north of Forgan, Oklahoma. Bonnie was the second of their three children. She attended Harmony School through eighth grade and graduated from Greenough High School in 1939. She attended Panhandle A&M College from 19391942 and taught school in Beaver County (at Union School and Greenough School) from 1942-1944. Bonnie and Lawrence Smith were united in marriage on January 18, 1942. They purchased land in Beaver County, Oklahoma, southeast of Liberal, Kansas, where they farmed and raised a family. Bonnie and Lawrence celebrated fifty years of marriage in 1992 prior to Lawrence’s death that same year. Bonnie enjoyed being a farm wife and mother and also worked in the cafeteria at Turpin Schools from 1965–1973 where she was known as the “bread lady” because of the cinnamon rolls and yeast bread she baked daily. Even into her eighth century of life, Bonnie enjoyed living on the farm, mowing her own grass, and tending a garden to share the produce with her family and friends. In 2007 Bonnie moved to Alva, to be near family and receive medical care. A faithful member of Bethel Church of God near Forgan, Bonnie served as a Sunday School teacher and youth group sponsor for many years. She was loved and appreciated for her gifts of hospitality
and encouragement. Bonnie was always very grateful for the love and support of the Bethel Church family and in her final years for the support of the First United Methodist Church of Alva, where she was part of the Homebuilders Sunday School class. Bonnie was preceded in death by her husband, Lawrence R. Smith; her parents, Omer and Jennie Minton; and both siblings: Melisa Davis and Albert Minton. Bonnie leaves to mourn her passing a host of family and friends. Bonnie is survived by her three children: Larry Smith (Glenda) of Richmond, Texas, Bonita Cox (Rev. Glendon) of Anderson, Indiana, and Dr. Troy Smith (Elizabeth) of Alva, seven grandchildren: Treva Madore (Gary) of Magnolia, Texas, Tamra Wright (Jesse) of Sealy, Texas, Deanna Centurion (Carlos) of Dallas, Texas, Major Christopher Cox, USAF (Jennifer) of Navarre, Florida, Pastor Lieutenant 2nd Class, CCPO Tiffany Smith, USN of Tulsa, Tray Smith (Whitney) of Newcastle, and Tenille Smith of Dallas, Texas; and nine great-grandchildren: Garrett and Hunter Madore, Jenna Wright, Lillian, Julia, and Charleston Cox, Diego and Alexis Centurion, and Ty Lawrence Smith. Extended family members include Sarah Jane Farber of Halstead, Kansas, Marlene (Jim) Murch, of San Angelo, Texas, Jim and Charlsye Oblander of Goodwell, and Jerry Lynn and Read Barby of Guymon. Friends include her neighbors and church families in Beaver County and in Alva, and all who have been touched by her life in the communities in which she had lived. Funeral services will be conducted 10 a.m., Wednesday, March 30, 2011, at Bethel Church of God, rural Forgan, with Rev. Stanley Lehnert and Pastor Tiffany Smith officiating. Interment will follow at Memorial Cemetery, Liberal, Kansas. Services are under the care of Miller’s Mortuary of Liberal, Kansas. There will be a time of visitation with the family prior to the funeral at Bethel Church of God. The family suggests that memorials be made to Bethel Church of God, Share Nursing Home, Share Hospice of Alva, or a charity of the donor’s choice. Memorials will be accepted at Miller’s Mortuary, Liberal, Kansas.

Charges filed on prime suspect Missing deposit from Lyn’s Oasis
By Jim Stout Charges were filed March 23 against the prime suspect after a red bank bag containing cash, checks and other items was discovered missing March 13 from Lyn’s Oasis in Nescatunga. Charged was Rebecca Sue Hildinger, 47, of Nash. She had been the only customer in the business when the bag went missing, owners Carthal and Lyn Hess told Deputy Dennis Frisk of the Alfalfa County Sheriff’s office. The owners had cashed two checks for Hildinger at $100 each, according to a court affidavit. Carthal and Lyn said the missing bag contained another $350-$450 in checks
and about $1,150 in cash along with Lyn’s billfold with her driver’s license and credit cards, the affidavit reported. Three days later, Deputy Frisk received information that the missing bank bag might be in a ditch north of Hildinger’s residence, the court paper continued. Frisk contacted the Grant County Sheriff’s office and met Deputy Scott Sterling and Nash Police Chief Darla Pendergraph in Nash and began to search for the bank bag. Deputy Sterling located it on Craig Road a half mile east of CR790. It contained the victim’s driver’s license as well as personal check books, medicine and receipts as well as other items including a $100 check Hildinger had written March 13 to Lyn for cash. All other cash and checks were missing from the bag, according to the court affidavit.

Timberlake Pre-K Obituary to enroll Friday Timberlake is planning a Pre-Kindergarten enrollment for Friday at the Elementary School in Jet from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. The Pre-K class is offered to all students in the Timberlake School District who are four years of age by August 31. Timberlake’s Pre-K program is an all day program with a maximum of 20 students. Parents will need to bring a copy of you child’s birth certificate and immunization records. Application forms for a birth certificate are available at the school office. At the time of enrollment, parents will be given a list of supplies needed and a student handbook. Meet another South Barber School Board candidate
One omission on candidate Helfrich
By Yvonne Miller Last week the Newsgram ran an article featuring all the candidates running for South Barber School Board in the April 5 election. One of those candidates was out of town visiting a daughter in Alaska. That is Bill Smith of Hardtner who runs for an at-large seat against Dana Roark of Kiowa. Since Smith was unavailable to answer the Newsgram’s questionnaire, he was allowed to give his answers upon returning home last week. Also one of the answers to the questionnaire was inadvertently omitted on the form submitted by candidate Deborah Helfrich. She faces opponents Mike Anderson and Mark Pollock. That omitted answer was to the question to list the candidates’ top three priorities for the district. The following are Helfrich’s Top
Three Priorities for the district: 1. To be informed and watchful of the budget issue and how it will change the education of our children. The cuts need to be kept as far from the children in the classroom as possible. 2. The need to develop ways to fill the budget gap to provide the supplies and programs our children will need. It may include personal donations, parent organizations or foundations. 3. To keep learning on what is new and happening in education. We need to provide all that we can for our students. Candidate Bill Smith Answers Questions Q. Name. Occupation, family – Bill Smith, retired submarine commander, owner of Bill and Janet’s Nature Museum and Hardtner Mayor. He holds a bachelor’s degree
in mathematics and a master’s degree in systems engineering. “I supervised teachers, staff and students while at the Trident Training Facility in Bangor, WA. List your Top Three Priorities of the School District. 1. “The continued decreasing of federal and state funding. This is happening on two fronts. First and probably our greatest concern is declining student enrollment.” He said South Barber’s enrollment has declined at a rate of 11 students a year the past 10 years for current enrollment of 215 students. The other is decreased state funding. 2. Maintaining our quality education with these funding cuts. 3. Using our increased capital outlay funds to improve maintenance on our school buildings and transportation. Q. Why are you running for school board? “We currently have one of the top academic and sports school systems in Kansas. With the declining funding to support our school system it is going to be a challenge to maintain these high standards. I believe I have the time, and with 40 years leadership, educational and financial experience I will be an asset to our school and community. Q. Anything else you want voters to know? “I am a firm believer in quality education at an affordable price and allowing South Barber residents to have a say in any tax increases. Friends of Salt Plains get rec areas ready Crystal Dig, campground to open Friday The Friends of Salt Plains National Wildlife Refuge are up and running!!!! The Friends group met up at the Jet Recreation Area and divided into two groups. One group went to the Crystal Dig area on the Salt Flats and the other stayed at Jet Rec. Even though the weather was bad, there was a large turn
out of support. The bathrooms are cleaned and restocked. The fire rings are in order, both areas are clean of trash and debris, and are ready to be opened on April 1..this Friday. During the potluck we held a Friends meeting and established monthly board
meetings and general friends meetings. The next general Friends meeting will be held on July 30, time and place to be announced. The Friends have also received their tax identification number and have filed for their 501c3 compliance as a non-profit organization. We have also established pending projects (observation tower and Sibley’s monument).

costumes cause a panic on stage and with the audience, some of whom have tears rolling down their cheeks with laughter. One older woman remarked after the show, “They even have nice legs,” referring to the “nieces.” Another woman commented on what a shapely figure Mick has as a woman. When told that later he groaned. Both farmers, Mick is also a referee and Matt an assistant football coach – not a thing like their Maxine and Stephanie characters. They pulled harder than the plows on their tractors through dry ground to pull off this farce. Just when you think the show can’t get any funnier add Keith Fink, who plays the old woman’s doctor and takes, let’s say an active role, with the impersonators. Playing a ditzy young woman whose head spins like the wheels on her roller skates, Jenny Cantrell brilliantly pulls it off, making the crowd love her. With a girlish figure, the crowd who doesn’t know Jenny would be surprised to learn
she is the mother of four children. Seasoned Border Line actress Mary Ellen artfully plays Meg, an assertive, yet yearning-for-more young woman who tries to keep this crazy group in tact while battling with her own conflicted feelings over the visitors. Mary Ellen has a way of always winning the heart of the audience. She undoubtedly knows how to “play” her fiance. He’s portrayed by veteran Gary Jacobs who by his facial expressions obviously has fun playing the tight-as-achurch-mouse minister who wants Meg, but also the old lady’s money that would come to him with their betrothal. Teen Chris Jacobs proves he can play any character since this role as a dapper young man is but one of the many he’s shown on the Border Line stage. Chris used occasional deadpan expressions and his natural dry sense-of-humor to play Butch. Director Justin Rugg, who has previous experience in the director’s chair and on the stage, pulls the very best
from these actors who brings another crowd-pleasing performance to the Border Line stage. It goes without saying that the firegrilled steak dinner was mouthwatering as always. Internationally acclaimed playwright Ken Ludwig would undoubtedly be proud of Border Line’s performance of his work. Woody Leonard of Woodward, author of The Blue-Haired Belles of the Burger Bar, Border Line’s last fall performance, attended opening night. He jumped to his feet to give the “Leading Ladies” cast a standing ovation and rave reviews.
