physician’s assistant, provide care at the hospital and clinic. The hospital also uses Docs Who Care services for additional doctors as needed. Odell said that Docs Who Care costs the hospital district nearly three quarters of what they would pay a doctor on staff. Odell said the board’s decision is a business one. Piper Speaks on Behalf of Crowd Lois Allenbach’s name was on the agenda for public input. She had designated former South Barber School Superintendent Glen Piper to speak on behalf of the group. Before Piper spoke, Odell gave an update, saying he had visited with both Piper and McNamar earlier in the day. Although no agreement was reached between McNamar and the board, Odell said, “The board continues to talk to Patty.” Odell asked district patrons for three things: trust, faith and accountability. “You ask people to serve on the board,” Odell said. He suggests people “walk in their (board members’) shoes.” Piper said he is aware the board cannot release a lot of information on this issue, especially what was discussed in executive session. Regarding the board’s decision on McNamar, Piper asked them to “review, reevaluate, and reinstate.” Piper said, “We respect Dr. Wilhelm and the PA, but Patty should be treated the same.” “Our purpose is simple. We want Patty McNamar back,” Piper said. Piper presented the board with a petition “signed by roughly 300 people,” he said, adding that’s almost one-third of the community. “That’s without soliciting.”
(At the regular meeting later in the evening, Board Member Schrock said there were not 300 signatures and some of the signatures were youths.) “We ask you to bring her back,” Piper said, mentioning all that McNamar’s done for the community. Saying that he’s visited with “both Zack and Patty,” he realizes “this isn’t a grievance board.” However he told board members, “I feel it was unjust – that’s my personal bias.” He reminded that small, rural areas are declining, including health services and school enrollment. “If South Barber is going to survive, we have to have a hospital. Without it we have a big problem. We have to work together as a team. We’re going to have the highest price hay barn if not,” Piper said. A Few Other Patrons Address Concerns Judy Tucker who serves on the Friends of the Hospital and Manor Foundation addressed the board. So far the foundation has raised over $1 million to help cover costs (such as new equipment) for the new hospital under construction. “The decision you made makes it hard for this foundation member to ask for money,” Tucker said. She reiterated the theme of the foundation which is “Where Community and Care Come Together.” Tucker commented on Patty’s positive attitude and said, “She’s a class act.” Patrons expressed concern for the hospital’s business if she works elsewhere and takes a following of patients with her.
Nearly 30 attend Kiowa Hospital meeting in support of ‘Patty’ Hospital CEO Search Extended
By Yvonne Miller The regular December meeting of the Kiowa Hospital District Board started out in their regular meeting place, the nurses’ lounge at the hospital. When nearly 30 district patrons attended the meeting, Board Chairman Zack Odell recessed the meeting to the Kiowa Community Building. All members attended: Lori Schrock, Dan Lukins, Robert Stark and Jim Parker. The reason the patrons attended was to speak on behalf of DNP Patty McNamar. As previously reported, McNamar has near 28 years’ experience with the Kiowa Hospital. She started as a registered nurse and then became a nurse practitioner, later earning her doctorate as a nurse practitioner. When McNamar’s contract was up for renewal in February 2013, she and the board had just begun negotiations when she became seriously ill and could not work the remainder of the year. Now that she is improved, negotiations continued, but recently the two could not reach a mutual agreement as was reported in the Newsgram (from the last hospital board meeting). As reported previously, McNamar wants to start back part-time. The board’s vision is to have two doctors and one mid-level care provider as Board Chairman Zack Odell earlier specified. Find a cell phone? Do the owner a favor! Take it to the police station By Lynn L. Martin Marione was making a routine visit to see the accident reports at the Alva Police Station. During that visit, she mentioned that I couldn’t find my iPhone5. Kathy Schwerdtfeger said, “Oh, we have a collection of found cell phones! When people find them they sometimes bring them here.” They looked through the collection and there wasn’t anything as modern as an iPhone5. She told the story of one phone where the owner had taken precaution to install a piece of security software. When the police powered up the phone, it displayed a message, “This is a stolen phone. Please call this number.” In that case, the phone was lost and not stolen. They were able to re-unite the phone with its owner because of the message.” As most of you know, I am not a big fan of Apple, but they do have some products that are must-have. In particular, I’m thinking of the iPad which when loaded with the Foreflight program is outstanding aviation navigation software. My main cell phone is an Android
Galaxy S4. I added the iPhone because I was going to teach a course about the photo-aps for cell phones. Both Apple and Android are big players in that specialty. Anyway, had I enabled the Apple iCloud, then that service would have displayed a map showing where my missing phone was hiding. I fired up iCloud anyway and it did show me that my iPad was resting at home. I already have cloud-like services with DropBox, Google Drive, Zenfolio and Adobe Drive. I hated to be bothered with one more so I skipped the Apple offer for the iPhone5. At the present time, the huge irritation in the computing and smart cell phone world is everybody wants you to have a user-name and password in order to do utilize their services. I wouldn’t be surprised if I don’t have a hundred accounts and they are all supposed to have different user names and passwords for security reasons. You and I both know that is almost impossible. I have a half-dozen user names I can remember and a few different passwords. Even with that UNrecommended simplicity, I’m all the time having to pull out a cellphone to look up a way to access some service I need. At least on the missing cell phone, I installed a password to get into it, and I
usually enter a shorthand version of the user name or password so a little personal knowledge of my coding method is needed. By the way, it is extremely important to install encryption software on your phone. Nearly every one of us with a smart phone have our entire life history carried on that phone with such goodies as bank account numbers, credit card number, ATM pins, social security numbers, birth dates, etc. Hackers can easily retrieve that information from your phone if you merely protect it with a password. They can plug a capture device into the phone’s microUSB port and enjoy a bonanza. If you encrypt the information, they’ll give up on yours and find a non-encrypted victim. In conclusion, if you happen to find a black iPhone5 and don’t know where to take it, the police station is a good choice. I still believe I will stumble across mine at one of the three locations and two cars in which I hang out. I did attempt to call the phone on the very day I misplaced it while I was at each of the locations. No luck. And it was a Saturday and I had not visited a single store or restaurant that day. So it should be in one of my personal locations. My wife thinks I probably dropped it on the street getting in or out of a vehicle, and it may well be run-over.

By Marione Martin Law enforcement officers went to check on a man reported to be slumped over the wheel of his vehicle on the side of the road. The driver ended up under arrest and was later charged with two misdemeanors. According to documents on file, on Dec. 14 about 9:55 a.m. Alfalfa County Deputy David Gebers went to check on the vehicle. It was about two miles north of Cherokee on Hwy 8 near Harper Road. Cherokee Police Officer Mike Dodds was already on the scene. Gebers spoke to the driver, later identified as James Allen Barron, 24, of Alva, and asked him to have a seat in his patrol vehicle. With Barron inside the vehicle, Gebers could smell a very strong odor of an alcoholic beverage. Barron said he left Kingfisher at 6 a.m. and was heading to Amorita to a friend’s house. He said he became tired and pulled over on the side of the road on the south side of the bridge. Barron said he rested there a while and tried to drive forward but only made it to the north side of the bridge. Gebers asked Barron if he drank any alcoholic beverages, and Barron said he took two shots of Kentucky Deluxe before leaving Kingfisher that morning. Gebers asked Barron if he would perform field sobriety tests, telling him he would have
to put him under arrest for suspicion of driving under the influence of intoxicants if he did not. Barron agreed. After performing some eye tests, they moved to the one leg stand. At that point Barron said it was cold out and refused to perform any more tests. He was placed under arrest, handcuffed and placed in the back seat of Gebers’ patrol unit. Gebers opened the door of the suspect’s 2002 black Nissan SUV and found it running with the keys still in it. He turned it off and could smell an odor known to him from experience and training as marijuana. He opened the door to the back seat
and found a backpack containing a small clear baggie with a green leafy substance inside and an open container of Kentucky Deluxe. Both were placed into evidence. Barron was taken to the Alfalfa County Sheriff’s office where he agreed to take the state’s breath test. The test showed he was over the legal limit, and he was booking into the jail. Barron has been charged with two misdemeanors: driving while under the influence and possession of a controlled dangerous substance. He was also given a traffic citation for transporting an open container of alcohol.

training at Fort Eustis, Virginia before he was transferred to Fort Sill, Oklahoma. In December of 1964 he was sent overseas to Vietnam. Mr. Joseph was married to Marjorie Wilcox on September 17, 1966, at the Alva first Christian Church. To their union a son Jeff was born. Following their marriage they returned to Enid to make their home, and he worked At Vance Air Force Base as a airplane electrician. He was a member of the Enid First United Methodist Church. Tom continued farming the family farm, and was an avid hunter and fisherman. He was preceded in death by his parents, a stepmother Mary Elizabeth (Poe), a sister Jolene Fay Huffaker, and close family friends Pat Banse and Lorene Rust. Tom is survived by his son Jeff Joseph of Garber, a sister Linda Lou Joseph of Alva, seven grandchildren and five great grandchildren a number of nieces nephews and other relatives and friends. Memorial contributions may be made in his memory to Alva First United Methodist Church.

Terry loved teaching science and loved making a difference in the life of students. He taught at Stillwater Middle School, Kansas State and Oklahoma State and at Irving Middle School in Norman. Thelia preceded him in death. Along with his teaching, Terry developed hands-on science curriculum for the Lawrence Hall of Science at UC-Berkeley. He continued to develop course curriculum and provide professional development for science educators until his death. Terry received numerous awards for teaching including the Presidential Award for Excellence in Science Teaching, the National Environmental Education Teacher of the year, the Outstanding Middle School Science Teacher of the Year for Oklahoma, The Outstanding Instructor in the College of Education at OSU and in 2013 was inducted into the OSU College of Education Hall of Fame. Terry is a member of Alameda Church of Christ in Norman. Terry loved motorcycle camping, bicycling and was up for any adventure with his family and friends. Terry was married to Skye Diers of Norman in 2006. Together they have five children. He is survived by his wife Skye, Norman, and their children, Tarren Shaw, Norman; Tana (Chad) Cartwright, and son Josiah of Dallas, Texas; Jake Dragoo, Oklahoma City; Ben Dragoo (fiancé Micah Watson), Norman; and Tucker (Elizabeth) Dragoo, Yukon; Terry’s two sisters, Gwen Shaw, Edmond; and Dixie (Greg) Thomas; niece Amanda (Ed) Blake, Richardson, Texas, and nephew, Tyler Thomas, Wichita, Kansas. Memorials may be made to the OSU Foundation, or the Oklahoma 4-H Foundation. Funeral arrangements are being arranged by Havenbrook Funeral Home in Norman. He grew up on the family wheat farm and attended Burlington School where he was valedictorian, active in FFA, and was named a State Star Farmer. Terry received his BS in biochemistry from Oklahoma State where he was a member of FarmHouse Fraternity. He married Karen Taggart of Stillwater in 1969. He then earned his master’s degree in molecular biology from UC – San Diego while doing cancer research at the Salk Institute. Terry then taught middle school science in Arizona. After his wife Karen was killed in an auto accident he returned to Oklahoma State to earn his doctorate de-

Kansas man was ‘only going 75 mph’ By Marione Maritn A Kansas man apparently thought the speed limit was 75 mph when he was pulled over on State Highway 8 three miles south of the Kansas line. According to court documents, on Dec. 16 about 11:30 p.m. Alfalfa County Deputy Sheriff Blake Trekell was approached from behind and passed by a Chevrolet Malibu with a Kansas tag. Trekell sped up to catch the vehicle and checked it with his radar at 76 mph. He turned on his emergency lights and the vehicle pulled over. Asked why he was speeding, David Wayne Wilson, Jr., 18, of Gardner, Kan., said he thought he was only going 75. Trekell explained the speed limit was 65 mph on this highway and asked him to step out and go back to the patrol vehicle. As Wilson left his vehicle, Trekell asked if there were any weapons on him. Wilson said he had two knives in the vehicle. Asked if they were just for his personal protection, Wilson said you could call it that. After Trekell did a pat down of Wilson for safety, they went back to the patrol vehicle. Once inside the vehicle, Trekell could smell a faint odor of marijuana coming from Wilson. He told him he was going to issue a warning for his speed and requested that he travel at the legally
required speed limits. After completing a check of Wilson’s license, Trekell asked him if there were any illegal items in the vehicle such as guns, knives, weapons or drugs. When Trekell asked about drugs, Wilson looked up toward the car and stuttered that there wasn’t anything like that up there. He went on to add that there was a pipe in the front seat that was new he had picked up for his cousin at a smoke shop in Texas. He said his cousin liked to smoke, then stopped and said collect pipes. Trekell asked if he could take a look in the vehicle, and Wilson agreed. Trekell searched the vehicle interior and found a small wooden pipe that had residue with the odor of burnt marijuana. He also found two other pipes and a grinder in the front seat that were clean from any residue or other substances and appeared to be new. He asked Wilson about the first pipe, and he said he only smoked tobacco from it. Trekell asked him why it smelled like marijuana, and he said someone else smoked marijuana from it. Trekell placed Wilson in handcuffs and told him he was under arrest for possession of marijuana. Trekell read Wilson his Miranda rights. He asked Wilson the last time he smoked marijuana, and he said it was two days ago while in Texas. Wilson said he just started smoking marijuana and that
was sort of why he went to Texas, to try it with a friend. Trekell asked if that was why his paraphernalia was new, and he said yes, that he purchased “that stuff” to smoke “weed.” He told Trekell he smoked marijuana from the pipe found in his center console and forgot it was there. Wilson was taken to the Alfalfa County Jail and his vehicle was impounded. Wilson has been charged in Alfalfa County with a misdemeanor of unlawful possession of marijuana.
Kansas Beef Expo livestock judging contest results
By Tim Marshall, County Agent The Barber County 4-H livestock judging teams had a strong showing at the Kansas Beef Expo judging contest on Friday, December 13th. The team of Payton Lewis, Carson Cargill, Tyce Lonker and Kirk Fisher won the Junior Reasons division with a score of 1140 and individual scores of 404, 376, 369 and 360 respectively. Payton Lewis led the team with a placing of 3rd High Individual Overall and Carson Cargill finished in 10th. Tyce Lonker and Kirk Fisher finished the day in 12th and 14th out of 23 in the division. In the Intermediate Reasons division, Taylor Paxson led the team to a 5th place finish with a score of 444 and was the 3rd High Individual Overall out of 107 judgers in the division. Bianca Lewis, Cade Lonker and Cody Jahay finished the day in 22nd, 36th and 59th respectively with scores of 423, 408 and 381. Taylor Paxson also had one of the highest combined reasons scores of the contest with a final score of 86 points on two sets of oral reasons. Sierra Cargill was the only entry from Barber County in the Senior Reasons division and she scored a 413 which placed 65th out of 121 entries in a very tough division.

Roxie Blunk told the board, “Please give us our Patty back.” Janie Rathgeber, now retired after years of working in the clinic, stood and addressed the board. She is aware the board said not hiring Patty back as a DNP was “a business decision,” but she questions that choice. Rathgeber added that after 28 years, “Patty has the trust and love of her patients.” She questioned why after McNamar’s illness and recovery the board does not give her an opportunity to return as a caregiver. Rathgeber shared comments of an area woman who praised Patty for the care she gave her family, especially her husband. Rathgeber said that woman told her she planned to give money to the hospital to take advantage of one of the 70 percent tax credits, but had changed her mind because of the board’s decision about McNamar. “Was this a good business decision?” Rathgeber asked the board. Following more discussion Dr. Wilhelm stood and told the crowd, “We’re getting into areas about Patty we can’t discuss. She has concerns we can’t discuss. I’d like Patty to represent herself.” Odell said, “We remain hopeful an opportunity will be presented to meet
both of our needs.” He said the board would like to take of advantage of “Patty’s dedication and commitment.” “I can’t promise, but will commit to going through the process,” Odell said and later added, “We continue to have an open conversation with Patty.” Odell and Hospital CEO Search Following the public input portion of the agenda, Odell again recessed the meeting and returned it to the hospital at about 9 p.m. When Board Chairman Odell gave the CEO Report, he said the search for a new hospital chief executive officer is extended to the first quadrant of 2014. “We want someone who will put their roots in Kiowa,” Odell said. “We need to make sure the position is filled with the right person.” Following the November meeting (which was held in early December) Odell told the Newsgram the board hoped to have a new CEO by the end of 2013. Negotiations with that candidate he spoke of apparently failed. It was brought out at the meeting that Odell is acting as an interim CEO for the hospital or in a management/consulting capacity. During the meeting he confirmed that fee is $100 per hour.
Following the meeting, when the Newsgram inquired about this position with hospital board members and personnel answers were vague. One board member said Odell’s position is at the request of the board. Another said it was discussed after former CEO Aldeen “Van” Vandeveer’s departure September 11. No one would confirm if such a decision was recorded in the minutes. The amount of hours paid for this consulting/management fee was not available. Odell was unavailable to phone calls by the Newsgram Monday. The remainder of the Kiowa Hospital Board Meeting will run in a separate article. The next regular meeting of the hospital board is January 23 at 7 p.m.

Alfalfa County Sheriff’s Log December 17, 2013 8:00 a.m. theft, respondent called wanting an officer to come and make a report on some stolen property from his work truck, gave location, deputy advised. 1:07 p.m. transport, deputy with prisoner in custody, will be meeting transport on Hwy 64. December 18, 2013 5:37 a.m. structure fire, north of Jet to Jct 11 on 38 north. 9:59 a.m. transport, deputy with prisoner in custody heading from Cherokee to Woods/Woods to Cherokee. 11:28 a.m. break/enter, respondent called and advised there had been a break-in at cabin at Great Salt Plains Refuge. There is some stolen property, looked like someone had stayed the night, would like for someone to come make a report, deputy advised. December 19, 2013 7:32 a.m. reckless driver, respondent reported a maroon truck all over the road, called respondent and he said that the vehicle had already pulled into Burlington, probably lived there because he turned off into housing area. 7:46 a.m. information, respondent
called and wanted a person picked up on a warrant, called the state that wanted the person and they didn’t want to extradite her. 8:45 a.m. accident, seriousness unknown, respondent called and reported a 2 car accident on Hwy 64 & CR 570, they didn’t think anyone was hurt, wanted fire trucks sent just in case, deputy advised and OHP was called. 8:50 a.m. control burn, respondent called and said he was going to have a control burn 2 miles north and 4 west of the water tower in Carmen. 11:16 a.m. miscellaneous, deputy called to report a couple of explosions east of his house, deputy went to check it out, talked to respondent which said he hadn’t heard anything since he reported the incident. 2:28 p.m. accident, seriousness unknown, respondent called to report his daughter had a fender bender at Burlington School at southwest end, would like to make report, advised OHP. 5:22 p.m. structure fire, Fairview PD called and requested page sent out to Aline FD to help with structure fire on a tractor and barn in Cleo Springs, Aline FD advised and en route.
6:49 p.m. minor accident, CPD advised of 911 call for accident in Jet, a witness called and said individual was the cause of the accident and has 2 kids with her, she is high and drunk, subject’s husband kicked her out today and took the kids over to a babysitter for the day while he worked because she is high and supposed to be packing her things and moving out, he advised that she has not been at home, she has been in town all day driving around with this girl getting high and drinking, babysitter advised that when subject got there they pulled up and physically yanked the kids from her and threw them over the roof of the car and pushed them into the car through the sun roof, subject started yelling at babysitter “I know guys that will come kick your F____ A___ and they will burn your F____ house down, gave locations to where each person lived, deputy advised everything is receiving well. 7:28 p.m. miscellaneous, respondent advised there was someone loading stuff into a pickup across from his house in Jet, advised deputy, already in area, deputy advised it was county employees unloading a chair.

By Marione Martin Emergency personnel from Major and Woods counties responded to a one vehicle collision Saturday. Two people were injured in the wreck which occurred at 2:30 p.m. on US412 in Major County, 1.5 miles west of the US412 and US281 junction. Sleet and icy roads contributed to the wreck. Dodge Ram 3500 pickup westbound on US412, lost control on the ice, ran off the roadway to the right, started to roll, struck a tree and then rolled one and onequarter times down into a 30 foot ravine, coming to rest on the driverâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s side. Schuster was pinned for an hour and 45 minutes. His passenger Danny Davis Jouett II, 24, of Amarillo, Texas, was pinned for an hour and 30 minutes. Both were freed by the Waynoka Fire and Fairview Fire Departments. Neither of the men was using a seatbelt.
Schuster was transported by Major County EMS to the Woodward Hospital where he was admitted for head, leg, arm, trunk internal and trunk external injuries. He was listed in stable condition. Jouett was transported by Waynoka EMS to the Woodward Hospital where he was admitted for trunk internal, trunk external and leg injuries. He was also listed in stable condition. OHP Trooper Gene Goodson investigated the collision and listed unsafe speed as the cause. He was also assisted by the Major County Sheriffâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Office.
