Construction worker falls from bridge By Julie Whiteman Just before 10 a.m. Tuesday, May 15, Alfalfa County emergency crews were called to a construction accident seven miles north of Cherokee where a beam had reportedly fallen on a man. Firefighters en route to the scene on State Highway 11 reported having difficulty passing a rock truck that would not yield to emergency vehicles.
Upon arriving on scene, EMS and Cherokee Rescue Unit personnel discovered 24-year-old Martin Maciel had actually fallen approximately 15 feet from a bridge, onto the the jagged rocks below. The beam had not fallen on him as originally reported. Maciel, an employee of Sewell Brothers Construction of Oklahoma City was erecting a safety cable across the bridge when he lost his balance and fell. Alfalfa Sheriff’s Deputy David Gebers said Maciel was removed from the jagged rocks to the ground beneath the new bridge. Maciel was carefully secured to a gurney and transported by ambulance to the Cherokee Municipal Airport where they were met by an Air Evac Life Team helicopter. Maciel was flown to Oklahoma University Medical Center where he was treated for serious injuries.

FISD takes action on support personnel, superintendent, money set aside for Advanced Academics By Roger McKenzie At its meeting Monday night, the Freedom School board took action on support personnel and called a special meeting to offer the superintendent’s position to one of many candidates interviewed in May. They also returned $150,000 in money previously set aside for Advance Academics to the school’s General Fund at the suggestion of its auditor, Buddy Carroll. All but two support personnel on Monday’s agenda were rehired for the 2012-13 school year. The rehire of the other two, cooks Peg Nixon and Laurie Watson, were tabled. After meeting five times in special meetings to interview superintendent candidates, the school board will hold one more special meeting May 16 at 7 p.m. to offer the superintendent’s job to one of them. When the school district contracted with Advanced Academics several years ago to teach students on-line who were counted as Freedom students because the district provided testing for them, the final bill sent to the district was inflated beyond the district’s expectations. The contract was canceled and a sum of $150,000 was set aside to pay Advanced Academics in full. The company never settled for that amount and after letting the money sit untouched for two years, the district’s auditor advised that it be returned to the General Fund. Superintendent Richard Gleave noted when making that recommendation, that “if down the road they (Advanced
Academics) decide to do something, then there will be legal issues that they will have to deal with because we had money there available for them....” The Principal’s Report and the Superintendent’s Report listed events which crowded the May calendar as the end of school approached. Upcoming events include driver’s education, which began Monday and girls basketball camps set for May 29-31 in Mooreland and an overnight basketball camp at Ft. Supply on June 11-13. Northwest Teen Tech Camp is May 30-31. Principal Charla Gleave noted the 2011-12 Freedom Public School Scholarship total is $32,900, which does not include an international merit scholarship. Supt. Gleave noted the school will be required to offer on-line courses in the upcoming school year. Northwest Technology Center has contracted with E2020 to offer those courses. Summer work will include a thorough cleaning of the school. Greenhouse construction plans are getting underway. Board members approved continuing several items that were needed for the upcoming school year, including membership with the Oklahoma Schools Insurance Group (OSIG) and a service contract with Municipal Accounting Systems. The former will be increased by $4,200 to a total premium of $25,171 for the school year. Gleave pointed out that Freedom has benefited over twice its payment total over the last five years due
to claims. The MAS service contract did not increase, he said. It will cost the district a total of $2,000, the same as for the 201112 school year. Another renewal of sorts was the acceptance of the core courses taught at Northwest Technology Center as meeting Freedom’s graduation requirements. One item new to the district was the addition of a Freedom 4-H account to the list of activity fund accounts. Previously, the 4-H group handled its own funds. After an executive session to consider continuing employment for support personnel, Gary Curtis, Brenda Daughhtee, Dalene Dauphin, Tana Nixon, Cindy Reed, and Dawn Wares were approved for rehire. A vote to hire a new superintendent to replace Gleave was tabled in favor of a special meeting in which the candidate selected will be able to attend and meet the school board and public attending. In other business, the school board passed its consent agenda, consisting of minutes for the previous regular meeting and five special meetings; activity fund expenditures, and encumbrances.

Chelsey graduated from Lomega High School in 2007 and continued her education at Southwestern Oklahoma State University graduating in May 2011 with a degree in Health Care Administration. She is currently employed with SandRidge Energy in Cherokee. She is the granddaughter of the late Marvin and Elmira Scheffler, Marcella Barthelma and the late Frank Barthelma of Okarche. Matthew graduated from Cherokee High School in 2003 and continued his education at Oklahoma State University. He graduated with a bachelor’s degree in Sports Education and Health in December 2007. He is currently the head boys’ basketball and girls track coach at Cherokee Public Schools. He is the grandson of Carroll and Carole Allen of Longmont, Colo., Wayne and Lois Guffy of Byron and Darlene Allen of Boulder, Colo.
The couple will be united in marriage June 22 at the First United Methodist Church in Enid.

South Barber graduates recognize ‘the crazy ones’ who change the world By Yvonne Miller With the class motto, “If they can make penicillin out of moldy bread, they can sure make something out of me,” by Muhammad Ali, the South Barber High School Class of 2012 surpassed a milestone, graduating their class of 14 Sunday, May 13th. A superior vocalist all through high school, graduate Naicee Gugelmeyer ended her career at South Barber singing a solo, “You’ll Never Walk Alone,” leaving few dry eyes among the commencement crowd. Class President Clarissa Murphy shared her trademark humor in her address to the crowd. Seriously she said, “As we look back, it is the mistakes, the changes and the memories that we make that will continue to make us who we are.” She said her class is known for not always following the rules or staying inside the boundaries. “But then again, neither did Rosa Parks,” Clarissa said. She quoted the words of the Apple Corporation, “Here’s to the crazy ones. The ones who sees things differently.” Some of those people who made mis-
takes led to the invention of pacemakers, penicillin and more, she pointed out in her speech. “Don’t for one second let the world tell you that you can’t do something, because you can. They’ll tell you you’re crazy, wild and see things differently, but the people who are crazy enough to think they can change the world are the ones who do.” Salutatory Address Ali Thurman Salutatorian Ali Thurman shared her love of Marilyn Monroe since childhood. Admitting her dad Greg does not think Marilyn is the ideal role model, Ali said he doesn’t want to be like the movie star. She just liked some of the things Marilyn said. For instance, “This life is what you make it.” Ali said now is the time for the graduates to explore all of their possibilities. She said they’ll undoubtedly make mistakes, but remember to get back up and keep trying. She asked her classmates to remember what former teacher Max McGee told them at Baccalaureate. A few other Marilyn quotes Ali believes in are, “Sometimes good things fall apart so better things can fall together.” “Keep trying, hold on and always, always, always believe in yourself, because if you don’t, who will, Sweetie?” Valedictory Address Moira Kimmell Valedictorian Moira Kimmell equated their parents and teachers to the GPS that’s guided her class thus far. She said those guides have taught them perseverance and determination, which top the long list of guidance. Moira made Biblical reference to the Apostle Paul. His mission was to spread the word of God. She reminded that Paul was first a sinner, traveling the road to destruction. It was by the grace of God that Paul was saved and became a servant of the Lord. She said the books of the Bible served as a guide for Christians for centuries and can lead her and classmates through their lives. Like Paul, the Class of 2012 will face many roadblocks. But like Paul’s example, the toughest challenge can be overcome. Moira said to her classmates, “Here’s to never giving up.” She advised that guidance system they need can always be found in the words of Proverbs Chapter 3, verses five and six, “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding. In ways acknowledge Him, and He will make your paths straight.” The three speakers joined retiring Senior/Junior High Principal Fred Gillig on the stage and praised him for all his accomplishments at South Barber, 30 years of which were as vocational agricultural teacher and FFA Advisor. Their comments were included in the South Barber School Board story. The commencement crowd rose to their feet with thunderous applause to give Mr. Gillig a standing ovation. With each graduate’s presentation of a white rose to their mother and the class video that showed most of the class members growing up together, many shed tears of sentimentality and celebration. It was a Mother’s Day those graduate’s mothers will always remember.

20th annual Youth Fishing Derby and National Trails Day at Salt Plains NWR On Saturday, June 2, Salt Plains National Wildlife Refuge will host two exciting events: our 20th annual Youth Fishing Derby and National Trails Day. The Salt Plains National Wildlife Refuge will host the 20th annual Youth Fishing Derby on Saturday, June 2nd from 8:30 a.m. until noon. The derby is open to children ages 14 years and under and will be held at Bonham Pond near the refuge headquarters. All fishing derby contestants must be able to hold their own pole. The event is co-sponsored by the Byron State Fish Hatchery and the Friends of Salt Plains National Wildlife Refuge.
The event will begin at 8:30 a.m. for children 9 years old and under. They will fish until 10:00 a.m. (Children six and under must be accompanied by an adult.) The 10-14 yrs. age group will begin their fishing derby portion at 10:30 a.m. This event is free for all participants. Prizes will be given for the longest, smallest and total inches of fish caught. Awards will be presented immediately following the conclusion of each age division. Door prizes will be presented throughout the morning. Children must be present to win. Bonham Pond is ADA accessible. Entrants are asked to provide their own
fishing equipment. However, fishing equipment will be available for those who have none and to provide for equipment malfunctions. Bait will be provided. Go for a hike on the Eagle Roost Trail located at the refuge headquarters or Sandpiper Trail located off of Highway 11. Both trails have observation decks with mounted scopes for wildlife viewing. Alfalfa County hit by IRS penalty number two Charge will be appealed
By Roger McKenzie For the second time in just over a month, the Alfalfa County commissioners learned they are being assessed a late-payment fee by the Internal Revenue Service. The $600 penalty was levied when the IRS did not receive deductions for federal taxes taken from county employees’ paychecks by the required deadline. The new late penalty came to the county commissioners’ attention at their Monday meeting as they were paying bills. A Monday holiday was blamed for the tardiness. County Clerk Bruce Martin wrote a letter to the IRS explaining the situation, but apparently the IRS has declined to consider that as an excuse. However, according to First Deputy Clerk Roberta Jamison, who attended
the meeting in the absence of Martin, the proper procedure, which is to call in the payment, was followed. Because of that, Commissioner Chad Roach said he would be making a call to protest the penalty. “If we have a record (of when it was called in), I think we can fight this.” The fight probably won’t go on for long, however, since sometime later this month, interest will be assessed on the penalty. “Cot” might be an understatement of just what the county’s Emergency Medical Service is seeking. But that is what the transport stretchers are called. An ambulance cot is a complex mechanical device that makes picking up and transporting patients, even those weighting over 400 pounds easier for EMS personnel. They are definitely medical assistive equipment and they cost a lot of
money. The commissioners opened bids for two cots from three different medical companies. The bids for a single new cot, with add-ons costing extra, ranged from almost $10,900 to $14,620. The bids were tabled for later consideration. Fifteen road crossing permit requests, and $14,500 in resulting fees, were approved. District 1 had 12 of them ($8,500). One permit ($500) was in District 2, while two were for crossings in District 3. However, those two permits accounted for $5,500 in fees. The completion of two District 1 bridges required money borrowed to finance them to be paid back. The county did just that Monday by transferring $50,000 per bridge to the appropriate account. The loans are interest free. Some new receiving officers were named by the commissioners. Jeff Irwin was named a receiving officer for Aline Rescue. He becomes that organization’s second such agent. Also named receiving agents for the county commissioners’ office were new employees Kelsy Stein and Tasha Moore. In routine business, the commissioners approved minutes of their previous meeting. They have the okay to maintenance and operations warrants, blanket purchase orders, the monthly consumable items report, and miscellaneous officers’ reports.

She passed away at the Alva Beadles Nursing Home on the 19th of May at the age of 86 years, 6 months and 4 days. She attended the Pleasant Ridge Rural Grade School. She then moved to Kansas City, where she worked for Hallmark Cards. Miss Nokes was married to Clyde William (Bill) Rader on August 15, 1946 in Dodge City, Kan.. Following their marriage they made their home on the farm that Bill’s grandfather, Harvey G. Bosworth, homesteaded and in January of 2008 the farm received the hundred year plaque. In November of 1975 they came to Alva and made their home. Mrs. Rader was a member of the Alva First Assembly of God Church and the Farry Quilters. The Raders spent the winters in south Texas. Olive Rader was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, three sisters: Darlene Laws, Evelyn Ring and Dona Weeks and a brother John. Mrs. Rader is survived by a brother and his wife, Elmer A. (Mickey) and Gladys of Enid. Several nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Most recently she was involved in activities in the Ada Church of the Nazarene, First Baptist Church of Fitzhugh, and Asbury United Methodist Church where she was a longtime member. Ruth graduated from the 8th grade at Moundview School, a one room schoolhouse near Meade, Kansas. She then graduated from Meade Bible Academy, Meade, Kansas. She attended Tabor College for one year and then graduated from the R. N. program at Grace Hospital and School of Nursing at Hutchinson, Kansas. She worked as a nurse in hospitals in Minneola, KS, Hutchinson, KS, Edmond, OK, Cape Girardeau, MO, Alva, OK and in Ada where she worked at Valley View Regional Hospital, was the student health nurse at East Central University for 17 years, and worked at Rolling Hills Hospital. Pattie Sue Bails, daughter of the late Haven and Margaret (Cambell) Gooch, was born August 12, 1939, in Alva, and passed away May 5, 2012, at Amarillo, Texas, at the age of 72 years, 9 months, and 23 days. On April 28, 1961, she was united in marriage to Robert Bails in Alva. They moved to Clovis, New Mexico, in January, 1973, from Wellington, Kansas. She was a beautician and owned her own Uptown Hair Design. She enjoyed horses, shopping, and fishing. Her family will always remember her for her faithfulness in God. Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by a sister, Billie Layman. KARIN JUNE WEARMOUTH Karin June Wearmouth was born on November 5, 1944, in Alva, Oklahoma, to Karis and Violet Bays. She went to be with our Lord on May 19,2012. Karin lived on a farm near Dacoma for 11 years before moving to Wichita, Kansas, where she graduated high school in 1962. Shortly after graduation, she married Jerry Lahr and together they worked and raised three children over the next 20 years. She later married Don Wearmouth and would spend the rest of her life as his wife. Karin and Don lived and worked in Enid and later settled in Oklahoma City. After retiring they spent many wonderful years traveling and visiting children. Karin is survived by her
husband, Don Wearmouth; her brother, Larry Bays; and her children; Troy Lahr, Edward Lahr, Sharene Lahr Smith, Dina Cundith, David Wearmouth and Dennis Wearmouth. She also has 10 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Karin will be deeply missed by all. A memorial service will be held at the Crossings Community Church in Oklahoma City on Thursday, May 24, 2012.
