Roger Kassik - On Telehospitalist Program at Share Medical Center Roger Kassik of Dacoma, with his wife Paulene and daughters Lynni and Dawn, relaxes after he was transferred back to SMC for less costly swing bed level of care. He may occasionally have to transfer back to the larger hospital for specialized procedures. He is monitored by Dr. Robert Rader via telemedicine while in Alva.

“I think this tele-medicine machine is a great thing. Some of the treatments I need require multiple trips to larger OKC hospitals for check ups. With the Chief of Staff of St. Anthony Hospital handling the tele-medicine work for Share Medical Center, it saves my family time and travel trouble. They also drop by SMC with a fifteen minute trip from Dacoma. We can lunch together and discuss family business so easily,” Roger said. “It is amazing that we can have almost immediate access to an OKC specialist. We’ve been able to visit with Dr. Rader every day. For me, they’ve been able to do it at any hour of the day or night.” Daughter Lynni said, “I think it is more comfortable for my Dad to be in the smaller surroundings being taken care of by people we know and who care for us.”

Dawn said, “This is awesome technology. I was highly impressed by Dr. Rader. It is so great to be able to converse with someone like that and so clearly, too. The picture and sound quality is simply outstanding.”

Reasons why men might be happier than women (Cute list a reader sent me. Thanks! Lynn L. Martin) • Men might disagree, but we’re only speculating. • Phone calls never last more than 30 seconds. • Wedding plans take care of themselves. • Chocolate is just another snack. • Car mechanics tell them the truth. • Men only have one mood. • A week-long vacation requires only one carry-on suitcase. • They can open all their own jars. • Their underwear is only $7.50 for a three-pack. • They are incapable of seeing wrinkles in clothing. • Their faces always stay the same color. • One hairstyle is good for years or perhaps decades. • They only have to shave their face. • They can play with toys their entire lives. • They believe Yes and No are acceptable answers to nearly any question.

South Barber school board covers end-of-school-year business

To advertise for two summer positions : SBHS Commencement is Sunday at 2 p.m.: Special meeting May 19, 5:30 p.m., to hear P1 Master Plan for high school By Yvonne Miller The South Barber Board of Education heard about finances, granted early graduation for a student, hired a cheer sponsor and more at their May meeting Monday night. Newly board-elected member Mike Miller took his seat at the board table for the first time. Board President Steve Allen called the meeting to order with all other members present, including Mariah Doherty, Deb Helfrich, Dooli Rugg, Melissa Simpson and Mark Pollock. Board members unanimously voted to name Pollock as vice president of the board (to replace Mike Anderson who was vice president until moving to Colorado). Superintendent Dr. Andi Williams and board clerk Julie Johnson sat at the board table. Jessica Swonger was approved as the junior high cheer sponsor. The board held three approximately 15-minute executive sessions. The purpose was an update on negotiations, a student matter and a student request for early graduation. The superintendent said the only action taken afterward was approval of early graduation for high school student Kacee Hostetler. The details of her plan are not open. The board approved having Williams advertise for two summer positions that

ANDI WILLIAMS

will include mowing, maintenance, etc. The money will come from the capital outlay fund. The total cost will be $5,000, which is $2,500 for each employee. The FFA offered to volunteer to paint for the school as part of the community service project. Current bills totaling $263,555.71 were approved. After a conversation with hospital officials regarding crisis intervention, the school board agreed the school building could be an alternative site during a crisis situation. Superintendent Williams Reports on Finances and More Regarding finances, Superintendent Williams said, “Nothing has changed since we last talked.” She still plans to apply for the “extraordinary need fund.” She should know by Aug. 5 if that money will be available. The superintendent said she anticipates that USD 255’s mill rate will increase. She plans to meet with auditor Randy Ford in May and said she’ll know more after that. She said the school’s surplus auction brought in $1,657. “That will never make up for the man-hours put in,” she said, but added the auction “was a success” because it cleaned out the school’s storage space. An update on curriculum and

textbooks found South Barber continues to upgrade math and science. Williams said EnVisions Math was adopted at the elementary a couple of years ago. This year the school is upgrading to newer copy rights, digital resources and online resources and extending the math adoption on up through the high school. The superintendent said science curriculum will be vetted this year for potential adoption in fiscal year 2017, along with ELA (English Language Arts). South Barber is planning their on technology camp with two days of sessions for students. The superintendent discussed the EdGE, which stands for Educators Growing in Excellence. “We designed our own professional development tailored to teachers’ wants and needs. In the future we plan to open it up to out-ofdistrict participation,” she said. Commencement and Other End-ofYear Activities South Barber’s commencement is Sunday afternoon at 2 p.m. in the high school where 13 will graduate. The board members handing out diplomas will be Mike Miller and Mariah Doherty. Grades 7-12 Principal Brent Shaffer said Nicole Blick is the valedictorian of the Class of 2016 and Anastasia Wilhelm is salutatorian. Honorary junior class conductors are Bailey Roberts and Spencer Kimmell. Shaffer reported on many student activities of which many have been reported upon in separate stories. Giving her final Principal’s Report to the board, Marcia Cantrell said the elementary leadership team is ready to send their detailed report of objectives for the On-Watch Plan. Cantrell said elementary classes are busy with field trips and other end-ofyear activities. The elementary track meet is Friday, May 13. The last day of school is May 17 with classes dismissed at 1 p.m. The board plans a special meeting May 19 at 5:30 p.m., to hear P1’s Master Plan for improvements at the high school.

By Marione Martin An Alfalfa County man has been charged with a felony following a domestic altercation. Joshua Thomas Price, 29, of Byron has been charged with assault and battery with a dangerous weapon. The crime is punishable by imprisonment for up to 10 years in the penitentiary or one year in the county jail. According to court documents, Alfalfa County Dispatch notified Deputy Dillin Munholland early Thursday morning, May 5, that a man had been shot in the leg with a high-powered pellet gun and was on his way to the sheriff’s office. When Munholland and Sheriff Rick Wallace met at the office, they learned the victim had gone to Share Medical Center in Alva. Wallace and Munholland arrived at the hospital at 4:13 a.m. where they talked to the victim Joshua McKee and to Alicia Price who was identified as the soon to be ex-wife of the suspect Joshua Price. Alicia told the officers she had been living in Byron with Joshua Price until about three weeks ago. She said they had separated, and she had moved to Medford. She said on Wednesday, May 4, about 3 p.m. she started getting text messages from Joshua Price wanting to get back together. Alicia said after receiving several text messages throughout the evening she called Joshua Price about 1:50 a.m. He said he was going to burn her belongings or throw them in the dumpster. She told him she would be there by 2:20 a.m. to get her belongings. Alicia said she and Josh McKee arrived at the house in Byron about 2:20 a.m. and went to the door, knocking twice. Joshua Price yelled at

By Stephanie Lambert Superintendent Donna Anderson informed the attendees of the Monday night Cherokee school board meeting that after an audit a discrepancy was found between the funds from last year and this year. She said the accounts will be combed over soon and she will find out exactly what the issue is. The board approved the consent agenda, consisting of the minutes of the April 11t regular board meeting, the minutes of the April 28 special board meeting, fundraisers, treasurer’s report, complex bond fund requisition, and the encumbrances, purchase orders, balances and warrants of the child nutrition fund, the general fund, and the complex bond fund. The next agenda item that was passed was the resolution for Schools and Libraries Universal Services (E-Rate) for 2016-2017. This resolution authorizes filing of the Form 471 application(s) for funding the year 2016-2017 and the payment of the applicant’s share upon approval of funding and receipt of services. The amount that will be paid by the school board will be $10,000. Another agenda item discussed was bids for new carpet that Anderson said needs to be replaced in several classrooms and added to the entire field house. She said the field house should be spruced up to look as nice as the complex. Two bids had been received. Pettit’s House of Carpet, of Alva, bid $46,582.69, pus an

additional $3,406.06 to re-carpet several office areas and Brewer Carpet One, of Enid, bid a nearly double figure of $83,779.60. Anderson recommended the board to vote for the lower bid from Pettit’s House of Carpet. She said that although it’s quite a bit of money to spend, it’s important to the upkeep of their facilities and will not need to be replaced again for another ten years. The carpet would be placed in squares, so individual squares can be replaced as needed. The board voted to approve Pettit’s House of Carpet’s bid, and mentioned that the carpet would be placed in the summer. Alcohol and Drug Testing Inc. for bus drivers and student’s involved in extra-curricular activities for the 2016-2017 school year was passed. Anderson said the testing is random and it seems to deter the students from using drugs. Anderson said in her superintendent’s report that she is excited that the schools will have a speech pathologist onsite three days per week next year. There is also a lot of maintenance that will be happening in the summer, especially since the school’s complex has been built. Anderson said many good things are coming soon and she is excited about all that’s been accomplished this year. The Cherokee Public Schools Summary of Financial Activities Report for April 30, 2016, stated the totals as fol-

lows: general fund of $4,579,285.77, building fund of $349,886.18, lunch fund of $68,044.50, roof-bond fund of $21,216.33, building equipment bond fund of $1,771.71, complex bond fund of $75,653.40, sinking fund of $814,363.69, gifts fund of $31,368.55, CAS/FLOOD insurance fund of $26,630.83, for a total of all funds of $5,968,220.96.

Tensions mount at Freedom school board meeting over cost of hotel stay By Stacy Sanborn Monday night’s regularly scheduled school board meeting was anything but regular. All members were present and kicked off the meeting by going over the consent agenda. Board President Shane Morris questioned a purchase order for fees associated with the upcoming CCOSA Conference to be attended by Superintendent Danny McCuiston and Principal Brett Hill. Morris said he didn’t think the principal had to go, especially since Hill is on his way out this month. Cindy Reed replied that Hill was a finalist for Principal of the Year and also the representative for northwest Oklahoma. Morris said he understood, but said there was nothing to really gain out of it. McCuiston chimed in, using an analogy of an athletic team qualifying for a state tournament and then the school opting to not pay the associated expenses. Morris stood firm in his assertion that Hill’s attendance to the conference was unnecessary. Reed argued that the award was for the body of work the principal already put in – not for future endeavors. “Do we want the reputation of saying ‘thank you for your work, but we’re not going to send you?’ I don’t want that reputation,” she said. Tensions started to mount, and the newest school board member, Shan

Danny McCuiston

Wilson, spoke up. “All I know is I’ve been told there’s some meetings here before that we were short on money, didn’t know if we could do certain things, and I would say try to cut spending as much as we could.” Looking over towards Hill, Wilson continued. “I think if you’ve done a good job and you’re getting an award, you’d want to go down there yourself anyway, I mean, regardless, you’re going, apparently. That’s the way I see it.” After a few moments of silence, Morris explained that he didn’t want to take anything away from Hill and his accomplishments, but he still didn’t see why the school needed to pay for something they’re not reaping any benefits from. “Well, I disagree with you,” McCuiston said. “I mean, if you have an administrator who’s up for an award, Principal of the Year, and that award is derived from work done here in your district, where Mr. Hill began his principal-ship, has worked for four years, you’re going to have an impossible time explaining to me how this district is not going to derive a benefit from that. Now, I can assure you that once word gets out – and it will; it most definitely will – that if you follow through with the direction you’re getting ready to head in right now, you will derive the consequences from that

decision. I can assure you of that.” Morris began looking at costs per person of attending the conference in question when Hill spoke up. “I’ll just help you all out; this is all public anyway. I just won’t go,” Hill said. “Not a big deal.” “But you’ve earned it,” Reed said. A couple board members were visibly upset, along with the superintendent. When Morris tried to discuss conference expenses again, McCuiston interjected, saying that Hill already gave his answer, with Hill simply replying, “We’re good.” This discussion gave way to Shan Wilson voting to approve all the consent agenda, with the exception of purchase order 356 – the CCOSA conference fees. When called on for his vote, Lynn Bolar stated, “Guess I’m the same. No on 356.” Cindy Reed and Concha Herrera voted to approve the entire consent agenda, and Shane Morris voted no on 356 (the conference fees) and also on a purchase order for parts ordered from his auto shop. Before the board moved on to the next item on the agenda, McCuiston said he had something to say. “Before we proceed here, I’d like to say something for the record,” McCuiston said. “I’ve never spoken [publicly] about why I resigned in March, but I’m going to.” He looked to Morris, “You called me on Friday to add item numbers eight, nine, ten and eleven, and that is all we discussed. And at that time, you had ample opportunity to discuss with me items three and four. But yet you chose not to mention that. And I didn’t find out about it until well up to this afternoon. We’ve had time since last month when these were approved by the board to discuss this, which would have been the professional thing to do, as opposed to just coming out and doing it in the way it was handled. I discussed with the board that I thought it would probably be time for the board to find someone that might be more inclined

Regional Housing needs to be discussed at local forum

The Oklahoma Coalition for Affordable Housing, in partnership with the Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas City, will host a Regional Housing Forum in Alva on Thursday, June 9, from 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. at the Northwest Technology Center. This event is one of a series of forums to be held across the state focusing on the

recently released Oklahoma Statewide Housing Needs Assessment. This statewide study, conducted in 2015, analyzes by county the affordable housing needs for moderate to low-income households, and addresses community issues such as fair housing, lead based paint and disaster resiliency.

The Alva event will provide an overview of the study’s results for the northwest quadrant of Oklahoma including the following counties: Alfalfa, Beaver, Blaine, Cimarron, Custer, Dewey, Ellis, Garfield, Grant, Harper, Kingfisher, Major, Rogers Mills, Texas, Woods and Woodward. Results of the study provides municipalities, housing developers, and nonprofit agencies with projected affordable housing demand for moderate to extremely low-income households, disaster preparation considerations, and fair housing key findings and recommendations. The Alva Regional Housing Forum will offer two hours of continuing education credits for social workers, real estate licensees and attorneys. Registration and sponsorship information is available at www.ocahforums.com.

Emily Rugg is the new Miss South Barber

Emily Rugg is the 2016 Miss South Barber and will represent her school in the Miss Cinderella Pageant during NWOSU's homecoming in Alva Sept. 29 - Oct. 1. Photo by Yvonne Miller

By Yvonne Miller Wearing a brilliant red gown, Emily Rugg was crowned the 2016 Miss South Barber at a pageant Monday afternoon in Kiowa, Kansas. She is the daughter of Justin and Dooli Rugg of Hazelton. For her talent, Rugg sang the whimsical show tune “Taylor the Latte Boy” from the musical “Wicked.” Her performance was as hot as the pink in her dress as she proved she is a natural on stage with her strong voice and showmanship. Two other junior girls also competed in the pageant. Anna Perez played a piano solo entitled “Bagpiper’s Holiday.” Andraia McKitrick sang “Bubbly.” All three contestants shone like the beads on their evening gowns as they modeled on stage. Besides talent and evening gown, the contestants were also judged during

interviews. The judges were Heather Reames of Anthony, Kan., Holly Cook of Hardtner, and Dr. David Pecha, vice president for administration at NWOSU. As Miss South Barber, Rugg will represent her school in the Miss Cinderella Pageant in Alva during NWOSU’s Homecoming Sept. 29 - Oct. 1.

Singing “Taylor the Latte Boy” from the musical “Wicked,” Emily Rugg exudes personality with a voice as smooth as the foam on her latte. Her performance earned the judge's vote to become the 2016 Miss South Barber. Photo by Yvonne Miller

Kiowa hospital board looks at finances, tax credit applications, physician search KDH Mobile Meals is going strong: KDH Annual Meeting is Thursday, May 19, 7 p.m., at Kiowa Community Building By Yvonne Miller The Kiowa District Hospital met April 28 for their regular monthly meeting. They had a full agenda, part of which was a conference call with their auditor. That portion of the meeting was covered in a separate story in the Newsgram last week. Board President Pat Myers called the meeting to order with members present including Jim Parker, Jeff Miller and Chantae Simpson. Brenna May was absent. KDH CEO Margaret Grismer sat at the board table. District CFO Janell Goodno was present along with Director of Nursing (DON) Heidi Courson, Physician Assistant Melissa Stroh and Foundation President Judy Schrock. Two board seats are up for election at the KDH Annual Meeting next week Thursday, May 19, 7 p.m., at the Kiowa Community Building. One of those seats is currently held by Jim Parker who is willing to serve another term. The other open seat is currently held by Pat Myers who announced he does not seek reelection. The new board member will be elected by the district taxpayers attending the meeting. The board encourages patrons to attend the annual meeting so they will be aware of the challenges facing the district. Grismer reported in the search for another doctor they had a candidate to interview the week after the April meeting. KDH continues their search through Doximity, KU Med, the Inline app, Arthur Marshall and ads.

Goodno said she and Schrock are ready to file the 2016-17 tax credit application. This year the money is for the KDH surgery department project. The anticipated cost is $145,685, which includes a C-arm machine ($89,000), table ($11,000) and sterilizer ($43,000). Grismer discussed how cybercrime in the form of malware and ransomware is becoming a common crime across the country. Healthcare is being targeted because all the information needed to steal an identity is in those electronic records. Grismer said KDH experienced an attack, but no protected health information was breached. She said there are security holes that need new software and hardware to repair. The CEO had bids ranging from $1,500 to $10,000 for the board to consider. They agreed to review the bids further in executive session. No action was taken on the bids following executive session. Myers reported that Roger Simpson continues to work on the hospital yard. The Rural Health Clinic was approved to join the Kansas Healthcare Collaborative. It’s a free program that will train staff as KDH moves from volume-based to value-based reimbursement. Mobile Meals and More from the Manor The KDH Mobile Meals prepared at the manor is up and running. Everyone involved compliments Courtney Schupbach for organizing transportation for the mobile meals. The words “fantastic” and

THANK YOU

Jace and Rachael Smith

“she’s a blessing” were used to describe her. The first week 21 meals were served in Kiowa and three in Burlington. More people have expressed interest in receiving the meals. The meals are served on Monday, Wednesday and Friday. The meals are $5.50 each. Grismer said they welcome anyone who would like to sponsor meals for someone who can’t afford it. The goal of KDH is just to break even on the mobile meals. KDH is searching for a DON for the manor. Courson is again strictly DON of the hospital. She said the hospital will be fully staffed in June. It is still a struggle to find a sufficient number of registered nurses and certified nurse aides for both facilities. Financials for Manor and Hospital At the end of March the manor had 22 residents. The manor’s total operating revenue was $113,650. Total operating expenses $168,011. Part of the increased expenses is increased agency nursing cost. So the manor showed a loss from operations of $54,360. Adding non-operating revenue of $11,010, the manor’s loss for March was $43,351. Year-todate (end of March) the manor has lost $93,312. Giving hospital statistics for March, Goodno said, “We were considerably under from last year for acute and swingbed care.” That number was 44 in March with 10 total admissions. The clinic had 360 visits in March. Total outpatient visits were 687. March was a three pay period month which makes higher expenses. Total operating revenue for the hospital was $392,939. Expenses were $557,231 making a loss of $164,291. With the addition of $102,413 (mainly tax money) the hospital’s loss was $61,878. Year-todate the hospital has lost $3,345. The combined balance sheet of the hospital and manor shows a year-to-date loss of $96,658 at the end of March. At that time the books show $673,000 is still due from Medicare, uncollected taxes are $542,222 and cash on hand was $653,694. The auditor will have the latest financial information at the KDH Annual Meeting, May 19.

Freedom

to lead this board in a more appropriate manner for this board. And we’re talking about a motel bill for a conference that is in my contract to attend, approved by the board for the past four years.” McCuiston reminded the board members of the financial situation the school was in when he first came and where they were now. The general fund and building funds showed huge increases of well over $400,000 total since he began his tenure. He said in all his years as superintendent, he never once asked for a raise or any other monetary consideration. “Okay? We’re talking about a motel bill,” McCuiston said. “Do what you want, but it’s pretty stupid and childish.” Morris immediately came back, “Once again, this is not about you not going.” McCuiston cut in to tell him to do what he wanted, but Morris emphatically exclaimed, “No! You’re going to wait!” McCuiston continued and said that he’s been to so many conferences over the years and there had never before been a problem like this. Shan Wilson said, “I know the hotel rooms we stayed in were half the price of those. I don’t think anybody said anything about you not going; they’re talking about you and the cost of the hotel room.” Wilson wondered aloud why there were up to four different grade levels in one classroom and why more teachers weren’t being hired, and Concha Herrera said that is not what is up for discussion at this time. McCuiston questioned where Wilson heard that to which he replied by pointing a finger at Herrera. Herrera refuted the accusation, and Reed clarified, “She said going forward, in the future, with budget cuts, it could possibly be an issue. But it hasn’t been in the past.” Trying to get the discussion back on track, Morris held up a piece of paper showing costs of hotel rooms. He started reading some figures out loud, and Wilson, still upset, said, “Childish spending. That’s all I know.” Reed jumped in: “Okay. I’ve made

a motion we not send them; she [Herrera] has seconded; can we just please have a vocal vote and be done with this issue?” The agenda item (possible consideration and voting to reconsider hotel rooms for McCuiston and Hill to attend CCOSA conference) was voted no by Reed, and yes by the others. This caused a bit of confusion, as the next line item (vote to approve or disapprove hotel rooms for McCuiston and Hill for CCOSA conference) was closely related in wording. Morris was uncomfortable with how to proceed, since McCuiston was contractually obligated to attend the conference. McCuiston said a simple vote by the board would relieve him of that obligation. Tempers flared among the confusion and Wilson requested a ten minute recess, citing the importance of checking the legality of it before a decision was made. The recess was granted. After consulting legal council, Morris returned and said that since line item number three was voted to not reconsider hotel rooms, line item four (to approve or disapprove hotel rooms) was canceled out. No action was taken. Finally it was time for the superintendent’s report. In it, he said deposit reports had not been listed as of Monday afternoon. He said he isn’t looking forward to the numbers for gross production since collections are at an all time low. “We are mired into the middle of the December-January pricing slump on oil and after that will come the slight climb of pricing, held back by the decrease in production. It will be a slow climb out of the hole.” He went on to explain about a motor vehicle collections litigation case that is gaining the attention of smaller schools who have lost substantial funding due to the way the Oklahoma Tax Commission is applying House Bill 2244 (enacted by the 2015 legislature). Lloyd Snow, superintendent of Sand Springs Public Schools, emailed several other superintendents, Freedom included, to explain that to date, over $11 million has been wrongly shifted from what is being called “los-

er” school districts to the “winner” districts. The districts deemed “winners” did nothing to cause this, but are reaping the unintended and unexpected benefits. McCuiston said it’s up to the board if they want to get in on the consortion, that all he was doing was providing the information. In his report, Principal Hill said it’s the final week of school and enrollment is closing out at 78 students. He mentioned the accomplishments of the FCCLA program and Mrs. Selfridge, Iridian Herrera and Ashley Strehl. He said the seniors are still on their trip and will be heading up to NYC before coming home this weekend. Before thanking several contributors who helped with the sports banquet, FFA banquet, and prom, he said based on early testing results, he believes the high school, at a minimum, will score a B on the A-F report card, though he is of course hopeful for an A. The next line item to approve the renewal with OSSBA for fiscal year 2016 was approved, and so was the renewal for OKTLE (for teacher evaluations). Before voting to go into executive session, Shan Wilson (who had previously stepped away to make a phone call to legal council) said he would like to go back over line item 3 (possible consideration and voting to reconsider hotel rooms for McCuiston and Hill to attend CCOSA conference) to make sure everybody was on the same page. He said it didn’t sit well with him, voting on something that he didn’t intend to vote that way on. He said his biggest concern was just the cost of the hotel room, that it had nothing to do with not wanting to send anybody. McCuiston appointed his assistant, Minutes Clerk Patricia Dauphin, to look for cheaper rooms and that satisfied the board. The board voted to go into executive session to discuss applicant and applications for superintendent. Upon reconvening, special board meeting dates of May 17 and May 19 were set. Each of those meetings will be held at 6 p.m. In new business, it was decided Freedom Public Schools to join in on the motor vehicle collection litigation. The meeting adjourned.

From Page 8 No charges filed against Barber County Pellet sheriff – it’s over By Yvonne Miller Finally, it’s all over and NO charges were filed against Barber County Kansas Sheriff Justin Rugg. Since an alleged domestic incident in December, involving Barber County Kansas Sheriff Justin Rugg, there was an investigation involving the Kansas Bureau of Investigation (KBI). Barber County Attorney Gaten Wood referred the case to the KBI so there would be no conflict of interest. Special Prosecutor Jess Hoeme, who was appointed to the case, met with the Barber County Commissioners April 28. Hoeme told the commissioners, “We have conducted an extremely thorough investigation and I have advised (Sheriff) Justin Rugg’s attorney that at this point, based on the evidence that we have, we will not be bringing any charges.” Hoeme’s comment was in an article written by Kevin Noland of the Gyp Hill Premiere who attended the commissioner’s meeting. Hoeme also said this investigation had been a lengthy process, but was necessary to be fair and thorough. The prosecutor reportedly gave few details, but Hoeme did confirm that it was the sheriff who reported the alleged incident.

“He contacted a law enforcement officer of the Kansas Highway Patrol,” Hoeme said. According to Noland’s article, Sheriff Rugg stated it was his responsibility to clarify any allegation concerning himself and his family. “I cooperated with the KBI. My family also cooperated with the investigation and I continued to do my job while the investigation drew to a conclusion,” the sheriff said. “I apologize for the lack of communication with the general public, but it was out of professionalism and my duty that I did not comment while the investigation was ongoing.” At the meeting, Commissioner Paul Harbaugh reportedly thanked Hoeme for his report and said, “As far as I’m concerned, that pretty much ends the commissioner’s role following up on this case.” Sheriff Rugg filed to retain the sheriff position the same day of Hoeme’s meeting with the commissioners. The primary election is Aug. 2.

them to “get the f--- out of here.” McKee said that Price stuck a gun out the front door pointed at Alicia’s head. McKee said he grabbed Alicia and pulled her down out of the way. McKee said he then pushed the gun away, breaking the screen. McKee and Alicia agreed it was time to leave and started walking back to the car. McKee said Alicia was a step or two behind him when he heard a noise from the screen door. He said he turned around but Alicia continued to the car. He said he heard Josh Price say, “What the f--- are you doing.” McKee said he turned to leave, heard a pop and was shot. McKee and Alicia got into the car and left and called law enforcement. At Share Medical a doctor removed a small .177 caliber pellet from McKee’s right leg. The pellet was retrieved by Sheriff Wallace. The sheriff contacted Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation Agent David Sauls who in turn contacted Agent Chris Ray. He met with Wallace and Munholland at the sheriff’s office to assist with the investigation.

From Family & Friends

Community House Shower for the Hofen's

March 23, 2016, the Anderson Creek Wildre destroyed the home of Brad and Ruchita Hofen and their two daughters, Cassia and Candace. They live northwest of Alva for part of the year when not ministering in India, where Brad teaches in various Bible Schools and holds large Gospel Meetings. It was heart breaking to them when they received the call that their home and all contents and personal belongings were totally destroyed by the ravaging wildre. Our heroic, dedicated remen tried their best to prevent this destruction, but strong winds prevented their efforts to save the home. Our Community would like to bless them with a Come and Go Shower held at the The Extreme, 425 College Avenue in Alva, on May 22, from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. Since everything was destroyed by the re, including their home, the hostesses suggest gift cards, gift certicates, or cash gifts as the most practical for the Hofen's at this point in time. However, if you chose to give a gift item they will be able to store the items until they rebuild. All will be greatly appreciated! If unable to come on Sunday, May 22, then Monday 16 through Friday, May 20 items can be left at the McDermott and Associates building located at 526 Flynn in Alva or with Kathie Wessels at 1308 S. Pennsylvania in Cherokee. If you have any questions, please call the Hostesses: Jane McDermott 580-327-3500, Kathie Wessels 580-596-2012, Kathy Churchill 580-327-3054 or Sheri Bushman 580-435-2409.
