Later Kay attended Southwestern Oklahoma State University for a year, and then decided to farm with his dad, Carl. In 1943 he and Ruby Gose were married in Enid, Oklahoma. They lived in the little house just west of his parents’ house until a new addition to the family, Cherie Ann, arrived in 1947. At that time, they moved into the big two-story house once owned by greatgranddad and grandmother Blanc. In 1951, a son, Myron Kay, was born. Kay and Ruby continued farming and ranching together for 56 years. They received the Blaine County Family Farm of the Year in 1984. Kay was very active on the Soil Conservation Board for many years. In November 2000, Ruby passed away after a long battle with cancer and heart problems. Kay enjoyed farming, raising Limousin cattle and growing wheat with his son Myron and grandson Brennan. Lynn Says
Should have flown my own plane to Florida By Lynn L. Martin This narrative has so many quirky things it proves I am probably a relative of the old time movie star Jerry Lewis. For you youngsters out there, Lewis was a combination of the Three Stooges (also movie stars) rolled into one person. I had scheduled a ridiculously early flight leaving Oklahoma City for Ft. Lauderdale, Florida, last Thursday morning at 6:58. I scheduled it several weeks ago so I could get a good ticket price. I briefly explored the idea of flying my Cessna 182. However, I calculated fuel costs at about $1,100 whereas a commercial round trip ticket was something like $300. Flight time in my own craft would have been about 12 hours. Not really practical to attempt in one day. Also, Florida, with an ocean on either side of the entire state, is known to be prone to lots of thunderstorms, which light plane pilots avoid like crazy. Now, I have not flown commercially since the TSA was created. I’ve either driven or flown my own plane so I could avoid the time wasted. If you recall, you’re supposed to get to the airport two hours early to allow time for the TSA check. So I got up at 2 a.m. to drive to the Oklahoma City airport. Allowing a half-hour to get ready, and figuring a two-and-a-half-hour drive, that should have gotten me on premises at 5 a.m. After I left Enid heading south, all of a sudden my emergency flasher lights started blinking. I had no idea what I had done to trigger that. I looked all over that instrument panel and particularly the steering column trying to find the little rounded orange switch that I was familiar with in my van. This time I was in a Ford Edge. For 15 minutes I looked. But I did not want to drive down the highway for another 70 miles with those lights blinking. I hated to call Kirk Washburn at 3:30 in the morning for advice. He’s a friend, but probably not a 3:30 a.m. friend. So I got out a Samsung cell phone
and manged to bring up Google on the Internet. I typed in “Ford Edge Emergency Lights.” In short order up came all sorts of quotes from Edge owners telling about how stupid the location was for the emergency flasher button. The problem is person after person talked about the stupid location but did not describe where it was. Finally, after reading about 30 comments, one person mentioned it was in the middle of the radio equipment in the center of the dash. Sure enough I found it and turned the blinkers off. I was listening to an audio-book CD and when changing discs probably triggered it with a knuckle. So 30 minutes later, after I left Okarche and crossed over that swooping curve of a bridge, I pulled off to the side of the road to check the iPhone (yes, I carry both brands) GPS map as to the best way to get to Will Rogers Airport. I thought I was being an exemplary good boy by not driving and trying to work my cell phone at the same time. I hadn’t been stopped for five minutes when an Oklahoma Highway Patrol trooper pulled in behind me with his blue and red and white lights flashing. Even though I was innocent of any crime for the moment, most us are conditioned for that to not be a sight we want to see in our rear-view mirror. He was parked back there long enough to probably run my license plate. I rolled down my window and awaited his appearance while still playing with the GPS map. I was not having a lot of success in getting a good route. I knew I could continue down Northwest Expressway, turn right at Meridian and just keep going. However, I thought there might be a faster way to avoid all the stop lights and city traffic. The trooper was very nice. He asked, “Are you doing OK?” I said, “Yes, I pulled over to use my GPS phone to try to find the best way to Will Rogers Airport.” He said, “Oh, just go about a mile, turn right on 81, go through El Reno, turn left on I-40 and take Meridian when you see it.” I guess he decided I was coherent enough that I wasn’t intoxicated. I said,
“Thank you very much. That’s what I will do.” He said, “Have a good day,” and turned around and left. He didn’t even ask to see my driver’s license – which was both good news and bad news. (You’ll understand that point later.) The travel instructions worked perfectly and I drove through the parking lot entrance at the airport, grabbed the little parking ticket, and then carried my bags for about a half mile before entering the building. After I got to the Delta Airlines area, a very nice lady asked if I knew how to do a self-check-in. “No,” was my answer. So she talked me through the process on a touch screen device and it spit out three boarding passes and a baggage receipt for $60 (ouch). It was a long line to where you leave the bags. It took about 30 minutes. But I patiently waited. When I got to the counter, I piled my bags on the scale and the lady asked to see a photo ID. I reached around to my back pocket and there was no billfold. I tried all my pockets. No billfold. She said, “I’m sorry, but you can’t check your bags or get on a plane without a photo ID.” I said, “I got stopped by a highway patrolman on the way here and it must be in my car.” She smiled and said, “I’m sorry.” Of course, I had to carry my heavy bags a half-mile back to the car and on the way I figured out that I did not pull my billfold for the trooper. I figured it was back in Alva on my dresser. So, it was clear I was going to miss my plane and all connecting flights. If you recall, I was parked in a commercial parking lot. I had no billfold. I had no money to pay the lady. When I pulled up to the window I said, “I’ve got a problem. I have no money or credit cards. I left my billfold back at home. But I’ve only been here about 30 minutes. I do have a blank check in my pocket if that will work.” She looked at me for about 10bseconds and said, “Go on.” I texted Marione and told her I would likely be back about 9 a.m. After she awoke and saw the text, she replied

Here’s a nice way to do infant pictures. This family in Norman, OK hired us to come to their town so the two grandma’s, and the parents, and the child could all have photos in one session. They reasoned, it was cheaper to have us make a one vehicle trip whereas it would have taken two vehicles had they driven to Alva.
The two grandmothers with Ian.
We specified we wanted to shoot by window-light so they placed an antique crib by a large window in the dining room. We got 30-40 shots of Ian. This was his first professional session. We also did individual portraits of everyone. Here’s one of the grandfathers.
Besides mileage to Norman and back (300 x .40= $120) we charged our usual $100 per hour. We shot 190 photos in the 1.5 hours we were there. We’ve burned 5 Cd’s for the participants.

Ways to Avoid the Flu Flu prevention is an important thing to consider when you’re trying to stay healthy -especially during flu season. Common sense tells us that flu prevention should be as easy as 1-2-3. So how can you prevent the flu? Read on for some great flu prevention tips. ·Get a u shot, particularly if you are 50 or over or have a chronic illness. In addition, consider a u shot if you are in regular contact with many people, especially if you live in a dormitory or work in an open-plan ofce, where hundreds of people are coughing and sneezing in a common area. ·Discuss with your pediatrician whether to immunize your youngsters in daycare. One recent study found that families whose children in daycare were immunized had 42% fewer infections with fever than those whose children weren't immunized. ·Wash your hands frequently and thoroughly. A quick rinse won't do the trick. To kill germs, communicative disease experts recommend washing with soap for 15 to 30 seconds-about as long as it takes to hum a rollicking verse of "Yankee Doodle Dandy." ·Keep your hands away from your face to reduce the chance of delivering viruses directly to your eyes or nose. One study found that people typically touched their face fteen times in an hour. ·Make certain you're getting your RDA for vitamin E and other antioxidants including A, C and B-complex vitamins and minerals. These have properties that enhance immune response. Studies on older mice have shown that those with reduced levels of vitamin E were more susceptible to u infection.
ALVA STATE BANK & TRUST COMPANY 518 College Ave. - Alva, OK 73717 580-327-3300
·Don't smoke. Smoke paralyzes the cilia, the hairlike cells lining the nose and airways that sweep incoming viruses away before they can infect. ·Use tissues, not cloth handkerchiefs, to reduce spread of infection. ·Reduce stress. Research has shown that immune responses are compromised by stress. ·Get seven to nine hours of sleep a night. Chronic sleep deprivation can reduce your immune response.

·Reduce alcohol consumption. Chronic heavy drinkers suffer from more colds and u-and their complications-than others do, and even regular moderate use of alcohol can compromise immune response.

Funeral Home of Marlow. Britanie was born on July 13, 1986, in Freedom to Richard Dean and Jeanette Ann (Bornkamp) Welty and lived in Freedom most of her life. While attending school in Freedom, Britanie was very involved in many activities including cheerleading, playing basketball and running track. She was also very involved in the FFA. She graduated as the valedictorian of the Freedom Class of 2004. Upon her graduation, she attended Northwestern State University where she earned a BA in secondary education in 2008. She was a member and former president of the Alpha Sigma Alpha sorority. She met her future husband, Jamie Dan Bradshaw, while at Northwestern and they were married in June of 2008 in Loco. On January 3, 2010, Britanie gave birth to her daughter Addison Danielle Bradshaw in Duncan. Addison was a very athletic young lady and enjoyed going to her dance classes and performing in recitals. She also loved cheerleading and loved to go to cheerleading and was a member of the Glitz Cheer Squad of Healdton. She loved to watch “My Little Pony” and later the movie “Frozen.” She loved her ponies, playing with her cousins Rylee, Jaiden and Trenton and going to her school at Velma. Addison wanted to follow in her mother’s footsteps and be a teacher. She played teacher all the time and was always trying to teach someone something. Addison was very bright and could count to over 100, knew all of her ABCs and could even spell her brother’s name. She also really loved going to see her grandparents and would always come home just a little more spoiled than the time before. Addison’s little brother, Aidan James Dean Bradshaw, was born in Duncan on July 11, 2012. Aidan was a very energetic and adventurous little boy and always had to ride on the riding lawnmower around the block. He also liked to drive his gator and drove it like he’d been driving forever, even stopping to check to make sure his tailgate was up and spit off the side just like his dad and grandpa did. Aidan loved keys and was always carrying them. He truly loved his
sister and did everything that she did, including jumping on their grandma and grandpa’s bed. As a mother, Britanie’s total focus was on her children and she sacrificed everything for them. She was a great mom who took them to church at the Loco Baptist Church, where they all belonged. She was very active in her church and taught Sunday School, helped with vacation Bible school and anything else they needed. Britanie was a good photographer and took tons of pictures of her children. She was currently working as a Plexus Ambassador and was very successful at it. She enjoyed helping and doing for others and was always cooking, baking and sharing it with her family and friends. Britanie is survived by her husband Jamie Dan Bradshaw; her parents, Dean and Jeanette Welty of Freedom; her brother, Richard Dean Welty Jr. of Woodward, and her sister, Wilene Welty of Freedom; and was preceded in death by her great-grandmother, Irene Ruby Bilss Welty. Addison and Aiden are survived by their father, Jamie Dan Bradshaw; grandparents Dean and Jeanette
Welty of Freedom; James and Julie Bradshaw of Loco and Laura Womack of McAlister; their greatgrandparents, Harold and JoAnn Bradshaw of Loco; Jack and Marcia Spanable of Wichita Falls; and Cathy Bishop of Lovelady, Texas; greatgreat-grandparents, Alfred and Wilma Bornkamp of Huntertown, Indiana; their aunt Carolyn “Care Bear” Cox and husband Greg of Velma and all three are survived by numerous other aunts, uncles and cousins. They were preceded in death by their great great-grandmother, Irene Ruby Bilss Welty; great-grandmother, Ella Southerland; great-grandfather, Ewell Swanson; and aunt, Danielle Marie Bradshaw. The family requests in lieu of flowers memorial donations be made to the “Bradshaw Family Memorial Fund” at First National Bank & Trust in Ardmore, Duncan, Norman and Waurika or “Benefit Account for Bradshaw Family” at First National Bank & Trust with locations in Velma, Lone Grove, Marietta, Ringling, Sulphur and Ardmore. Online condolences may be made at www.CallawaySmithCobb.com.
Once again we find ourselves thanking our friends, neighbors, firefighters, emergency personnel and county workers for saving our homes during the recent fire. We are truly blessed! Dennis & Pat Frascht Neal & Sonja Williams

Kiowa City Council approves employee raises, water main project By Yvonne Miller Following two executive sessions at the end of the January meeting of the Kiowa City Council, pay increases for employees and administration were approved. City Administrator Nathan Law confirmed, “The increases are merit based, generally on a range of two to five percent and tied to annual evaluations.” Law said he recommended the pay increase for employees and Mayor Brandon Farney recommended the increase for the administrator to the council. Both motions passed unanimously. All members attended the meeting called to order by Mayor Farney. They were Mark Lambert, Tom Wells, Russell Molz, Bill Watson and R.L. Simpson. City Attorney Laurel McClellan and City Clerk Marlo Rugg also sat at the council table. Administrator Law reminded that the filing period is open for municipal and school elections in Barber County. The filing deadline is Tuesday, Jan. 27, at noon at the Barber County Courthouse in Medicine Lodge. All Kiowa City Council positions are at-large, according to City Administrator Nathan Law. The seats up for re-election are currently held by Mark Lambert, who has served two terms, which is the maximum; Russell Molz, who has served one term; and Bill Watson, who has filled an unexpired term and one full term. Research by Clerk Rugg showed that Watson is eligible to again file for one four-year term. City of Kiowa Business Regarding the tri-city water main replacement project, Law said engineering is required for work on more than one
mile and also for grant or low interest loan applications. Engineering costs alone would be in the $30,000 to $35,000 range for the estimated near half million dollar project. After major discussion, the council decided it will be cheaper for city employees to do the work themselves one mile at a time to avoid engineering costs. The council directed Law to start seriously getting project figures together and work on financing, which he agreed to do. Due primarily to lack of membership, Kiowa’s Lion’s Club is going to disband, Law said. The club wants to donate their concession stand at Progress Park to the city. The council accepted the donation. The council approved surplus sale items. One of those was the high bid of $500 by Farney Farms (which is the mayor) for a 2005 Crown Victoria police cruiser with 100,686 miles on it. Mayor Farney said he put in a 2,400-foot grass strip for small planes to take off and land. He plans to leave the car by the strip for the use of people who might need it when they land there. The other surplus item is a 2007 John Deere riding mower. The council agreed to try and get a set amount for a tradein for another mower from Prairie Land Partners. The city pays for maintenance on the digital movie theater projector donated by Jim Molz a few years ago for the Chief Theater in Kiowa. At the recommendation of Law, the council agreed to approve a $20/month increase to the maintenance cost. This adds $240 to the already budgeted $1,100 theater costs for 2015. The Kiowa Fire Department (KFD) has an old rescue truck that someone from
out of state offered $4,000 to purchase. Councilman Molz offered $4,001 to buy the truck, which council approved with Molz abstaining from the vote. Council members said the truck has been advertised for over one year. The KFD requested the council to consider approving payment of Joe Cox’s annual life insurance premium for the amount of $783 per year. This request is because Cox was on the KFD roster for 41 years and retired in February 2014. The council said they cannot set such a precedent. Attorney McClellan said the KFD cannot legally pay the premium since Cox no longer serves. Council Approves Donating $50 to Burlington’s Project Prom. As they do annually, the council approved official depositories as Kiowa’s First State Bank and People’s Bank, and The Kiowa News as the official newspaper. They also approved the Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) Waiver. This is because division of accounts and reports is not cost effective for a small community the size of Kiowa. Law presented detailed reports of capital improvement requests that were received and filed. They are to be reviewed and prioritized by council members and discussed at the February meeting. Considering the end-of-year budget review, at the recommendation of Law the council approved moving the approximately $9,000 remaining in the general fund to capital improvements. This is because those funds are “use it or lose it.” Kiowa Police Chief Steve Johnson said volunteer officer Michael Simpson “is doing an excellent job.”

By Yvonne Miller It’s an honor to be selected for membership in the National FFA Chorus, but a privilege to be chosen as a soloist among some the finest high school vocalists in the nation, Alva High School junior Ridge Hughbanks said. President of the Alva High School (AHS) FFA, Hughbanks was a member of the National FFA Chorus that performed throughout the National FFA Convention in Louisville, Kentucky. “It was probably one of the greatest weeks of my life thus far. There’s nothing else like it to perform with kids from across the nation. I now have friends from Nebraska to Puerto Rico. I hope to be back there and see them all next convention!” Hughbanks said. He told about the process he underwent to earn membership in this prestigious choir, both at the state and national levels. “I sent in an audition CD that Mrs. (Ramona) Cummings helped me make. The day of the deadline, they (National FFA office) called me to say they couldn’t get my audition CD to play. They told me I had until midnight that night to send an email audition. So I had to redo the whole thing and Mrs. Cummings was out of town. So Mr. (Nick) Bradt helped me. It was a real exciting time to say the least! I got confirmation they (National FFA office) received it, but I didn’t hear for about two months that I made the choir. I was so excited!” He received sheet music and a tape that had his part so he could practice.
Arriving early for the convention, chorus members spent two-and-half days in intense rehearsals to learn eight songs to perform throughout the convention. “It was real strenuous but fun with a lot of great, helpful people who got us through it,” Hughbanks said. They performed classic songs ranging from Stephen Foster’s “My Old Kentucky Home” to pop favorites like Pharrell Williams’ “Happy.” During rehearsals friends prodded Hughbanks to audition for a soloist position, which he got. “I was told I had a loud, commanding voice,” Hughbanks said. His solo was in the song of the states where he had fun using an Elvis voice and moves as “Las Vegas.” Hearing him sing his part on a phone video made by his sister Sabrina, who was at convention with the South Barber FFA, proved why he was chosen as a soloist. “It gave me chills hearing them announce my name from Oklahoma,” Hughbanks said. At AHS, Hughbanks is not only involved in FFA, vocal and the Electric Gold show choir but in many organizations. He’s treasurer of the student council and Key Club; he’s participates in one act, speech and debate; the Band of Gold; football, basketball and soccer. Maintaining a 4.0 grade point average, he is on the superintendent’s honor roll and member of the Oklahoma and national honor societies. The son of Kyle and Trina PiperHughbanks, Hughbanks is the
grandson of Glen and Donna Piper of Kiowa, Kansas. “I’ve always loved to sing,” Hughbanks said. “My dad pushed me into it because he loved singing and wanted to see if I shared his love and passion.” He was referring to his joining Fred Neuman’s Juicy Fruit choir as a fourth grader. Singing under Neuman’s direction, Hughbanks said, “He got me started in my musical path. I can’t thank him enough.” He’s had Ramona Cummings as his vocal teacher since sixth grade. “She’s always someone I can count on about music or anything I need,” Hughbanks said. Randy Nation and Jessica Chegwidden are his FFA advisors at AHS. Besides his school affiliation, Hughbanks uses his love of music working for BOSS Music with Jerad Bradt.

We have re-invented the wheel! About a year ago, we changed something about the Newsgram. We were mailing copies to all rural routes and throwing copies into yards. Now we mail to everybody, every week.
Most of our “shopper publication” competitors deliver only to convenience stores and restaurants. We do that too, but in addition, we use the U. S. Postal Service Saturation Mailing Service and the Newsgram is now mailed to not only the rural routes, but also all in-town mail routes in Alfalfa and Woods Counties. This has the advantage of not missing apartment complexes and not cluttering up yards of unoccupied homes, but also reaching young people who tend not to subscribe to regular newspapers. We also mail to Barber County, KS but still hire the Arrow Head West human service agency to employee their clients to throw Medicine Lodge and Kiowa, Kansas residential areas. If you would like to do Saturation Mailing for your business, you can pay the post office about 18 cents each to go it alone. If you share costs by inserting your piece in our mailing, you can do it for about 6 cents each. Or, an even less expensive method of reaching everyone is to buy a full page ad. In color, it is less than 3 cents each and in black and white about 1.4 cents each.

Candidates for municipal offices in these eight Alfalfa County municipalities file declarations of candidacy beginning at 8 a.m. Monday, Feb. 2. Man already in custody who broke into Plum Thickett at Kiowa By Yvonne Miller Sometime between Sunday night and Monday morning, someone broke into the Plum Thickett restaurant on the far east side of town at 1215 Main St. in Kiowa, Kansas. Proprietors Sue Becker and Mike Helmley confirmed the break-in to the Newsgram and said they found someone had pried open a back door to gain access. That person also turned off the electricity to disable the alarm system. Helmley said that alarm is supposed to work on batteries when electricity is not turned on, but it didn’t. They are having the alarm company find the source of the problem. Helmley said the thief attempted to break into the cash register but was
unsuccessful and damaged it slightly. He said the culprit stole some Plum Thickett checks. Nothing else appeared to be damaged or taken, he said. Kiowa Police Chief Steve Johnson said an adult man was arrested at Hazelton, Kansas, Monday in connection with the break-in. Because the man had the Plum Thickett checks, he was charged with burglary and theft. Chief Johnson said that man is being held in Harper County, Kansas, on other warrants there. Harper County Sheriff’s Department Seargent Justin Carey told the Newsgram that man is Shawn Solie, 28, of Attica, Kansas. Carey confirmed the other charges Solie is held on in Harper County:
non-dwelling burglary, felony theft, misdemeanor theft and criminal damage of property. Another Incident in Kiowa Sunday Night Chief Johnson mentioned another incident that happened Sunday night on the far west edge of Kiowa at the old airport location. That area currently is a storage facility for wind turbine blades. Chief Johnson said the security guard who watches over that property ran someone off about 11:30 p.m. Sunday. “We don’t know if that is the same person (who broke into the Plum Thickett), but they have the same description,” Chief Johnson said.

that she had found the billfold on the dresser. The next step is both of us got on the Internet trying to find an alternate flight that would get me to south Florida for my drone class at 8 a.m. Friday. We looked at Wichita, Tulsa and Oklahoma City. Finally, we had to settle for a 6 p.m. flight out of Oklahoma City that would get me to Ft. Lauderdale at midnight. More than that, when I missed the first flight, the airline canceled my whole round trip. This means I had to buy everything all over again at PREMIUM rates – something like $1,300 instead of $300. I had the foresight to buy travel insurance that would protect the costs of my initial tickets in case something went wrong. When I called to implement that feature, I was told, “Sorry, that is only valid before your first flight. You are calling AFTER your first flight time.” I ended up getting to bed at 2 a.m., exactly 24 hours after I started the day. However, I only had time for four hours of sleep because I had to drive my Avis
Mazda rent-a-car and find my way to the classroom location before 8 a.m. The rent-a-car thing did not go well. I found the car in the basement of this multi-level parking garage. However, after loading everything, I could not start the car. I have never operated one of these push button to start cars. (Well, I used to have a 1936 Ford but that doesn’t count.) I’d push the button and the dash would light up, but it wouldn’t start. I made sure the gear shift lever was in park. There was no attendant around. I fished in the glove box. No instruction manual! After wasting about 15 minutes, I figured I could once again go to the Internet and look at a 2015 Mazda instruction manual on my smartphone. Nope. I was in a BASEMENT garage. No signal. Finally, I fastened the seat belt and the car was pleased to start. I made it to my class on time. However, I have some more Mazda and TSA stories to tell, but will have to save that for another time. I should have flown myself.
