Lynn Says

Bet some of you have this virus also! By Lynn L. Martin I thought you would want to know about this e-mail virus. Even the most advanced programs from Norton or McAfee cannot take care of this one. It appears to affect those who were born prior to 1955. Virus Symptoms

1. Causes you to send the same e-mail twice. Done that! 2. Causes you to send a blank e-mail! That too! 3. Causes you to send e-mail to the wrong person. Yep! 4. Causes you to send it back to the person who sent it to you. Aha! 5. Causes you to forget to attach the attachment.

Well well! 6. Causes you to hit “SEND” before you’ve finished. Oh, no not again! 7. Causes you to hit “DELETE” instead of “SEND.” And I just hate that! 8. Causes you to hit “SEND” when you should “DELETE.” Oh No! IT’S CALLED THE “C-NILE VIRUS.” Have I already sent this to you?

Kiowa Hospital board’s doc recruiting continues, finances in black at end of January Less tax revenue due to oil and gas protests; Meals on Wheels closer to starting; Landscaping and mowing a priority By Yvonne Miller The Kiowa District Hospital (KDH) Board opted to expand their search for an additional physician with new technology at their January meeting. KDH CEO Margaret Grismer reported on the success of those services at the Feb. 18 regular monthly meeting. One of those new services is an “Inline” app used by physicians that lists KDH and has already had a few hits – one that resulted in an interview. The other is Doximity, an online professional networking service for physicians. Of the 50 emails Doximity sends monthly, Grismer said 40 were opened and some interest already expressed.

The board discussed recruiting, landscaping/mowing, finances, Meals on Wheels and much more at their Feb. 18 regular monthly meeting. President Pat Myers called the meeting to order with all members present including: Jeff Miller, Jim Parker, Brenna May and Chantae Simpson. Grismer sat at the board table and other staff present were: CFO Janell Goodno, DON Heidi Courson, Physician Assistant Melissa Stroh, Dr. Leal and Dr. Hull. Foundation President Judy Schrock also attended. Hospital and Manor Finances Presenting KDH and Manor statistics and financials, Goodno said ending in January the combined balance sheet

The family of Luanne Boham would like to thank all family & friends for the tremendous outpouring of love, prayers, cards, flowers, meals & memorials received as Luanne went to heaven to be with her Lord & Savior. Thank You Sincerely, Loyd Boham, Dayna Pedersen Bart Boham, Travis Boham & Families

shows the district had a gain of $63,828. Cash on hand in all funds was $974,405. Goodno learned from Barber County Commissioner Paul Harbaugh that because of oil and gas protests and lower county valuations, mainly due to the decrease in oil and gas production, KDH will receive approximately $35,000 to $40,000 less than expected this year in tax revenue from Barber County. Presenting hospital statistics for January, Goodno said they had the most acute care days since 2003. The total acute days were 54. This made 71 total days of acute and swingbed care. Total admissions were 27. “It was a busy month,” she said. Total outpatient visits were 614. She mentioned that 64 visits to the emergency room was “very busy.” Clinic visits totaled 324. Goodno reminded that when hospital numbers are increased, Medicare reimbursement decreases. She said the auditor BKD, should have an early cost report that will give more concrete numbers by the March meeting. For January the hospital’s gross patient revenue was $439,184. Total contractual adjustments were a negative $47,676. Total operating revenue was $420,204. Total operating expenses were $438,055. Those figures made net loss of

Principal Feely reemployed at Burlington School for 2016-17 Burlington’s Lady Elks District and Regional Champs, play in area tournament Friday By Yvonne Miller At the Burlington School Board of Education regular meeting Feb. 16, they unanimously extended a contract to Principal Shane Feely to reemploy him for the 2016-17 school year. Feely’s contract was discussed in an approximately 50-minute executive session of the nearly two-and-a-half hour meeting. Also listed for discussion in that session was certified personnel with no action to be taken following the session. The principal updated the board on basketball playoffs. The Lady Elks are District and now Regional Champions as of last weekend when they beat Timberlake. Coach Kirsten Pruett said the Lady Elks are now 26-2. They play in the area tournament at Catoosa Friday at 6:30 p.m. They play Coyle who is 23-3. Coach Pruett said if they win, the Lady Elks advance directly to the state tournament in Oklahoma City next Thursday. If they lose Friday at Area, they would play again Saturday in Catoosa at 6:30 p.m., she said. When asked, Coach Pruett said this is her sixth year to take the Lady Elks to the area tournament. A pep rally is planned for Thursday afternoon with the time TBA. That’s because there is no school on Friday

as there are teachers meetings in the morning. Burlington School Board Business Board President Terry Graham called the meeting to order with members present including Robert Hill, T.J. Rockenbach and Aaron Smith. Allison Armbruster was absent. Others present were Superintendent Glen Elliott, Principal Shane Feely and minutes clerk Tamre McGinnis. The board elected the following officers by acclamation: Graham, president; Smith, vice president; and Armbruster as clerk. Representatives from the companies bidding on a new tractor and front end loader for the school district attended the meeting. They were: Otis Shaw with Livingston; Brandon Zehr and Tyler Dunham with Enid New Holland; and Jennifer Hiller with Western John Deere. Each representative answered questions regarding specifications of the product they offered. After the representatives left the meeting, the board accepted the quote from Enid New Holland for the Kubota 6066 tractor with front end loader at a cost of $41,815. Superintendent Elliott read a resignation letter from Jaci Heath, a

teacher’s aide, effective March 1. The board thanked Heath for her service to the school. Board members approved the following encumbrances, change orders and warrants for 2016: General Fund: encumbrances $31,660.24, change orders $514.43, warrants $198,936.96; Child Nutrition Fund: encumbrances $2,000, warrants $6,154.24; Building Fund: warrants $134.29. The following items received board approval: the January activity report; renewal of the participation in the Cooperative Education project for the 2016-2017 school year; continuing the contract with Municipal Account System (MAS) for the school year 2016-2017; the contract for audit of the 2015-2016 fiscal year to be conducted during the 20162017 fiscal year from the accounting firm of Chas. W. Carroll P.A. Board members discussed and tabled the proposed school calendar for the 2016-2017 school year. Without any new information regarding real estate, board members agreed there was no reason to enter executive session to discuss it. In his superintendent report, Elliott said the Alfalfa County Livestock Show was Feb. 15-17 with the local livestock show on Feb. 22. The Northwest District show is in Enid March 2-7 and the Oklahoma City Livestock Show runs March 9-18. Elliott announced the Oklahoma Secondary School Board Association (OSSBA) District Two meeting will be at Fargo on April 21. Burlington’s newest board member, Robert Hill, will be attending The Effective Board Workshop and the New Board Member Workshop on April 29 and 30. Principal Feely reported to the board that current enrollment is 132 elementary students and 41 high school students. The Burlington High School Elks were District Champs with a 1214 record. They lost at the regional tournament so are finished for the season. The junior teams finished their seasons with the boys 9-9 and girls 16-2.

It was 7 am, a week ago Saturday, and Kate Moss was going about her normal kitchen routine when all of a sudden she fell to the floor, unable to get up.

Her husband, Raymond, and a nursing student granddaughter carried her to the bed and soon determined she had suffered a stroke. (When she attempted to hold both arms straight out, one remained at her right side.) They rushed her to the Share Medical Center Emergency Room. Share Medical Center is certified to handle strokes. The staff immediately injected a clot-busting drug with the agreement of St. Anthony physicians as details were made for travel by helicopter. Kate received excellent help at St. Anthony Hospital and was released on Wednesday noon with almost no side effects lingering from the stroke.

580-327-2800

As they were leaving St. Anthony Hospital, Kate’s husband Raymond commended the OKC doctors on what a fine job they had done. They replied, “You are giving the credit to the wrong people because the staff at Share Medical Center were the ones who made the critical decision to administer the clot-buster drug.” Raymond said, “The quick action by Share Medical Center ER staff allows my wife to retain her independence and not be wheelchair bound.”

More than 17,000 acres burned last week By Lynn L. Martin The Doby Springs fire started on Feb. 18 in Harper County, with more than 17,280 acres burned. The Englewood (Kansas) Fire Department believes this may be the larg-

est wildfire in Oklahoma history. Denise Clecker, who took several amazing photos, said that 200 volunteers and at least 24 fire departments and strike units helped out coming from Oklahoma, Texas and Kansas. There were numerous

farmer and rancher volunteers bringing tractors and mowers. Commissioner Randy McMurphy of Woods County said they operated a few fire-fighting brush rigs. The count so far is four burned barns, two unoccupied houses and three bridges. Many cattle died in the blaze but no numbers were available. Most of this information is from the Englewood Fire Department.

Earthquake near Alva Monday This shot of the Doby Springs fire on Feb. 18 was taken between Buffalo, Oklahoma, and Englewood, Kansas, a few miles south of the state line by Denise Cleckler of Meade, Kansas, with a Canon 7D. Cleckler took hundreds of impressive photos and we'll be using one on the cover of our Friday Alva Review-Courier.

By Marione Martin The U.S. Geological Service reports a 3.7 magnitude earthquake was recorded Monday, Feb. 22, near Alva. The earthquake was centered 20.2 miles south of Alva at a depth of 5 kilometers or 3.1 miles. It was southeast of Waynoka and west of Aline.

Alfalfa County tip line available The Alfalfa County Sheriff’s Office has installed a tip line for callers to report possible crimes anonymously. The number is 580-596-2500. The sheriff’s office said there is no phone connected to the line; it just goes to an answering machine so it is completely anonymous. Please make note of this number for future use.

By Marione Martin Two men from Oklahoma City were arrested after being seen throwing a package over the fence at James Crabtree Correctional Center (JCCC). According to court documents, on Feb. 17 about 7 a.m. Correctional Sergeant Jackie Eckman was monitoring cameras in Central Control at JCCC when she observed two men on the perimeter road located on the southwest end of the Unit 6 yard. Eckman radioed the Perimeter Officer Steven Geitzenaur to respond to the area. Helena Police Department Officer Jim Dykes was also

called to respond to the scene. When Geitzenauer arrived at the scene he observed the two suspects throwing an unknown package over the fence of Unit 6. He then saw the two suspects, dressed in black jackets and hats, crawling under the wire fence west of JCCC onto County Road 650. Dykes arrived and placed the two suspects under arrest. The package was found to contain 5 lbs. 1.8 oz. of tobacco, one smartphone with charger, one flip phone with charger, two boxes of Black and Mild cigars, and 2.1 oz. of a green leafy substance which later field

tested positive for marijuana. The suspects were transported and booked into the Alfalfa County Jail by Dykes. Daviyon Quintez Wright, 22, of Oklahoma City and Aaron Levelle Stevens, 22, of Oklahoma City have each been charged with two felonies: (1) possession of cell phone or electronic device in penal institution and (2) bringing contraband into a penal institution. Both men were also charged with a misdemeanor of possession of contraband in a penal institution.

Alva man arrested for felony DUI By Marione Martin An Alva man arrested for DUI in Alfalfa County indicated he knew the arrest routine quite well. According to court records, on Feb. 16 about 8:15 p.m. Alfalfa County Deputy Gary Mast asked dispatch if there was an OHP trooper in the area. He said there was a vehicle high-centered, possibly an accident, at County Road 650 and Cleveland Road and the driver was possibly intoxicated. Trooper Darrin Lancaster responded, arriving about six minutes later. Lancaster saw a Ford Explorer that had driven off into a washout on the north side of the roadway. The vehicle dropped off into a deep washout and damaged its underside. Lancaster observed a woman standing on the driver side in the roadway and a man sitting in the passenger seat. Identification showed the woman was

Gina M. Ross. The man was identified as Billy Lee Ross Jr. Lancaster also observed a strong odor of an alcoholic beverage about the vehicle. Trooper Lancaster had Mrs. Ross come back to his patrol car where he checked her driver’s license and also checked Mr. Ross’s driving record. Mr. Ross came back under suspension. Lancaster asked Mrs. Ross if she had anything to drink and she said no. He did not detect any alcohol odor about her person. He asked where they were coming from, and she said from Enid and heading to Alva. Lancaster asked if Mr. Ross had anything to drink and she stated that is obvious. He asked who was driving and she said that he was. Lancaster then talked to Mr. Ross who had a strong odor of an alcoholic

beverage about his person and red bloodshot eyes. When questioned, Ross said he was driving and was trying to turn the vehicle around. Lancaster asked Mr. Ross to step out of the vehicle. He stumbled, fell and his left leg slid into the ditch. Lancaster had to help him get back out of the ditch. Mr. Ross then turned around and placed his hands on the vehicle in a frisk position. Lancaster asked him to walk to the back of his vehicle. Mr. Ross had to place his hands on the vehicle to keep his balance. As soon as he got to the back of the vehicle, he placed his hands behind his back in the arrest position. Lancaster asked him what he was doing, and Mr. Ross said I’m going to jail. Lancaster asked him why, and he said I always go to jail. Trooper Lancaster started the field sobriety tests but did not continue for safety reasons because Ross was so unsteady on his feet. Lancaster asked him how much he had to drink, and Ross said a couple of glasses of whiskey. He was taken to the Alfalfa County Jail. Billy Lee Ross, Jr., 47, of Alva has been charged with felony DUI (driving under the influence). He was charged with a misdemeanor of driving while license is under suspension. He also received a traffic citation for improper turnabout.

By Marione Martin A Carmen man has been charged with possession of drugs after a search warrant was served at his home. Thomas Zeek Harper, 43, of Carmen has been charged with a felony of possession of controlled dangerous substance and a misdemeanor of possession of controlled dangerous substance. According to Alfalfa County court records, on Nov. 18, 2015, at 6:30 p.m.

Undersheriff Glenn Oister served a search warrant on Harper’s residence. Items seized included a glass pipe with residue, a gold metal spoon with residue and a blue/black plastic container that held a green leafy substance. The items were submitted to the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation (OSBI) regional laboratory for analysis. On Dec. 18 Oister received the criminalistics examination report

from the OSBI. The glass pipe and gold metal spoon tested positive for methamphetamine. The green leafy substance tested positive for cannabis (marijuana). The felony charge is punishable by imprisonment for 2 to 10 years and a fine of not more than $5,000. The misdemeanor is punishable by imprisonment up to one year and a fine of up to $1,000.

By Leslie Nation CHEROKEE – During the Alfalfa County commissioners’ meeting on Monday morning at the county courthouse the commissioners accepted two quotes for the labor and construction of two bridges: one west of Highway 8 and Kay Road, and another west of Kiowa Road and Highway 8. District 1 First Deputy Ashley Sciara brought to the attention of the county commissioners that they wished to award the job to K & O Construction & Supply Co. out of Enid because they already had equipment, were cheaper and could start as early as Tuesday. Commissioners Toby Walker and Chad Roach agreed and awarded the job to K & O Construction. In other important business on the agenda, the commissioners revisited the invoices for doors whose payment

was tabled during last week’s meeting. Because of the delay in payments due to some discrepancy on the invoice, the commissioners agreed to go ahead and pay the invoice and put out two additional pay orders for the remainder along with a signed letter apologizing for any delay on payments. The commissioners then moved to review and approve of regular business such as minutes, payroll warrants, M & O warrants for payment, blanket purchase orders and road crossing permits. Other items on the agenda that were reviewed and approved by the commissioners were: • Private property easement SE/4 17-28-11 for construction on CR600, • Luckinbill payment #12 for $32,097.91 for heat and air/electrical project at the courthouse,

• Transfer from H17-3 Assessor Visual Inspection Capital Outlay to H172A Assessor Visual Inspection M & O for $6,500 for soil updates in mapping visual inspection area #3, • 2015 Mineral Interest Report for unclaimed mineral interest available for inspection in the county clerk’s office, • Request to appoint for District 4 Toby Walker and Chad Roach as requisitioning officers and Nancy Lambert and Ashley Sciara as receiving officers. During the meeting, the county commissioners entered an executive session at 10:43 a.m. to discuss the employment, hiring, appointment, promotion, demotion, disciplining or resignation of Tony Hellar, courthouse maintenance. After the discussion, the commissioners re-entered regular session at 11:43 a.m. where they decided to table a decision for next week till they further discussed their findings. Road crossing revenue for Alfalfa County was as follows: District No. of Permits Fee 1 0 2 0 3 1 N/C Total 1 -

You'll find out why actress Bayli Hyde is wearing a clown suit in a beach cottage when you see Border Line Theatre's comedy production of “The Dixie Swim Club” opening in Kiowa this weekend. She brings laughs and acting ability as memorable as the late Bruce Bryan who always appeared onstage at least once per production with this cane. through the years. The setting is a beach cottage on North Carolina’s Outer Banks where the friends meet every year. “The Dixie Swim Club” focuses on four of those weekends, spanning a period of 33 years. Listening to the BLT make-up artists Bev Anderson and Caitlin Jacobs, it’s going to be fun watching those young women age 33 years. Seasoned BLT directors and actors Justin Rugg and Kevin Cox are co-directing the play that is sure to be a hit with those two calling the shots. The cast members are: Bayli Hyde of Burlington; Rebekah Wagenbach, Reiley Courson and LiliAna Meade, all of Kiowa; and Emily Rugg of Hazelton. Several of these young women have performed in previous Border Line productions. Watching them in rehearsals it’s apparent they know their way around a stage and how to entertain their audience.

operations $17,852. With mainly tax revenue added totaling $99,765, the hospital showed a profit of $81,914 for January. The day of the board meeting, the manor had 22 residents. The manor had $111,853 total operating revenue and total operating expenses of $137,108. This made a loss from operations of $25,256. With $7,171 of mainly tax revenue added, the manor’s loss for January reduced to $18,085. Meals on Wheels and Childcare at Manor Manor Administrator Kim Balding was absent from the meeting, however she is working with Eldercare regarding the Meals on Wheels program. She told the Newsgram working with that government agency isn’t going as quickly as she’d like. Balding and Grismer plan to meet this week to get things in place. In a positive light, community volunteer Courtney Schupbach was put in charge of finding drivers for the program. Schupbach has gone to all of the churches and sought many other connections. She told the Newsgram Tuesday that she now has over 35 drivers. She expressed her thankfulness for all the people willing to donate their time and deliver meals at least one day per month for one to two hours or at least serve as a backup driver. Balding said the daycare at the manor is going well. She said there are still some openings. Through the Department of Children and Families they’ve been approved to offer low-income childcare rates for qualifying individuals. Director of Nursing Courson said she has a new RN at the hospital and four new certified nurse aides at the manor.

“We’re about to be fully staffed again,” Courson said happily. Hospital Board Business Grismer and the board discussed the serious need for dirt work and planting more grass in the hospital yard that has an erosion problem. The earlier rainy weather washed away dirt and grass. The board agreed to speak with the original company who landscaped the yard with bare minimum finances and they’ll go from there. Myers said a first priority has got to be getting grass growing. The board agreed to put mowing the hospital property up for bids and they’ll put an ad in the local paper. Grismer told the board she’s received some concerns that people cannot see the emergency room entrance signs at night since they are not illuminated. The board asked for more research before they make a decision. Pointing to a new display in the clinic lobby, Grismer said KDH is a new member of Healthy Kansas Hospitals. The display offers a variety of healthy snacks in both the clinic and hospital. The CEO showed a new portable machine KDH has that provides telemedicine through Vigilas. Her show and tell of the machine, showed the digital stethoscope. The board approved the following medical staff appointments: Doctors Kevin Hamm, Christian Binder, Rebecca Magno, Richard Toothman and James Turner were reappointed for two years. Steven Newsome, CRNA, Arden Bloedel, CRNA were appointed for one year. Regarding conceal/carry, Grismer mentioned Kansas House Bill No. 2052 that addresses that issue in public

The only action taken upon return to open session was approval of the monthly risk management/quality assurance report besides adjournment. The board set the following dates: next regular meeting is Thursday, March 24; the Rural Health Clinic plans a Health Fair in the clinic lobby April 8 from 6:30 a.m. to 11 a.m.; the annual meeting is Thursday, May 19, at 7 p.m. in the Kiowa Community Building. The seats held by Myers and Parker are up for election.

They also had a presentation on the topic of #oklaed, a weekly online education chat on Twitter.
