Landon Morse loves tele-hospitalist program Landon Morse fell at his aunt’s funeral in Waynoka. “I broke the bone above my left eyebrow and had the worst black eye you’ve ever seen,” he said.

A resident of the Homestead, he fell again and could not get up, was not near his phone and didn’t have one of those call for help pushbutton gadgets, a problem he is planning to solve. Kelly Parker was walking by and thought he heard a cry for help. Parker stuck his head in the door and asked if anyone needed help. A “Yes” came back and Landon was soon taken to Share Medical Center. (A real advantage to not living alone.) “After the second fall, Brian Nutter, A.R.P.N. suggested trying the tele-hospitalist program so I could get where I could take care of myself again. It’s just like standing in the room with the doctor. I was so impressed with his attention to detail, I couldn’t think of any questions to ask. It’s amazing he’s down there at St. Anthony’s and he’s worrying about my problems up here in Alva

“There are big hospitals and little hospitals, and there are advantages in both. I told him that he ought to live in Alva because if you need an MRI, they’ll bring up a semi-trailer for you. I’m going to get one of those remote buttons. I used to make fun of those, and now I’m going to get one.”

Lynn Says

Great column: The world has improved By Lynn L. Martin (I received this via email from the Wymer Brownlee firm. This puts thing in an excellent perspective. If you don’t read anything else in this column all year long, make it this one!) Many people believe pessimists are more realistic than optimists. Although completely false, it makes sense why some people think this way. In fact, we are biologically programmed to focus on the negative and dangerous aspects of life in the interests of our self-preservation, often irrationally expanding those perceptions to monumental proportions. This is precisely how alarmists, fear mongers, and doom and gloom soothsayers get the attention they crave: they capitalize on our greater attention to all things pessimistic. Yet, there is a great irony out there of equally monumental stature – that the world is, and always has been, getting better. After reading the following facts, the only rational reaction should be of the optimistic variety – ptimism that humanity

will persevere, innovate and triumph over the challenges presented to it, just as it always has. The World Has Improved The Natural Order: At one time, nature’s top predators were a threat to us. Now, we are very much a threat to them. Inventiveness: In 1903, humans flew for the first time. Six decades later, we walked on the moon. Processing Power: The first electric computer was the ENIAC, and it weighed 30 tons. Today, the iPhone weighs 4.5 ounces and is millions of times more powerful. Longevity: In the early 20th century the average global life expectancy was 31; today it is approximately 67. Violence: In the 13th century, over 11 percent of the world’s population was killed by the conquests of Genghis Khan. In the 20th century, less than 6 percent have perished due to conflict in all the wars during that period combined. This declining trend in overall violence has existed for a thousand years. Economic Growth: In the 1960s, global GDP was around 1.3 trillion. Today, global GDP has exploded to over 70 trillion, marking an unprecedented increase in global wealth.

Education and Literacy: In the early 20th century, world literacy was approximately 21 percent. Today it is around 83 percent. Poverty: In 1981, 44 percent of the world was living on less than $1.90 per day. Today, accounting for inflation, that number has dropped to 10 percent. Communications: Prior to the invention of the telephone in 1876, the only way to speak to someone was if you were within earshot. Today, anyone can talk to anyone anywhere, at any time, no matter how far away they are. Food: Since 1950, world population growth has been 174 percent. In that time, world grain production has increased by 249 percent (more than enough to sustain us – not even taking into account other sources of food growth). Fair Governance: Not too long ago, most of the power in the world was concentrated in the hands of the few (autocrats, aristocracies, oligarchies, etc.). Today, most of the world’s power rests with democratic nations where the people are the ultimate authority. Happiness and Quality of Life: Many nations have begun to statistically measure the happiness of their citizens so they can recognize areas for improvement. This will inevitably lead to a more deeply gratifying and happy world. Disease: In the year 1900, the crude death rate from infectious diseases in the United States was 800 per 100,000 people in a year. By 1996, that number had fallen well over 90 percent to under 50 (largely due to the discovery of antibiotics, development of vaccinations and various pharmaceutical innovations). Power to the People: In recent history, there have been many powerful examples of people fighting back against tyranny. Two examples in particular are the Arab Spring and the defeat of the oppressive “Stop Online Piracy Act” bill in Congress. Armed with these examples and more, it then stands to reason that one’s faith in people to rise up against tyranny is not naïve or ill-founded, but rather realistic. Pollution: First-world countries are learning how to stop pollution: In the USA, airborne toxins such as nitrogen oxides, carbon monoxide, lead and sulfur dioxide have decreased drastically since the passing of the Clean Air Act in 1970.

Obituaries FRANCES ELLEN BRUNSTETER Funeral services will be Thursday, April 28, 2016, at 2 p.m. at Alva First Presbyterian Church with Rev. Dr. Judy Pistole officiating. Private burial will be in Alva Municipal Cemetery under the direction of Wharton Funeral Chapel. Online condolences may be made at www. whartonfuneralchapel.com. Fran Brunsteter, artist, teacher, entrepreneur and so many other things, passed away peaceably on Wednesday, April 20, 2016. Frances Ellen McCauley Brunsteter was born to Worth Byrd and Elizabeth Roberts McCauley on June 8, 1929, in Oklahoma City, joining sister, Jane, in the family. Fran spent her early years in Oklahoma City, which included attending Classen High School through her junior year. In June of 1946, shortly after World War II ended, Fran, Jane and their mother sailed to Europe to join Worth in Munich where he was serving as chief attorney involved in the U.S. government’s occupation of Germany for the purpose of reestablishing the country’s military court system and based in Nuremberg. This occurred two years after Lt.Col. McCauley had landed on Utah Beach in Normandy on D-Day. Fran enrolled in and graduated from the American High School in Munich and during free time experienced skiing the Bavarian Alps and doing a good bit of hunting wild game, taking many “bucks” of various species. In 1947, Fran’s parents

immersed her in Paris for attending Alliance Francaise, learning the French language and preparing for studying art at the Sorbonne. Her time in Paris was brief, however, as a result of civil strife underway and she returned to Munich but her study of art proceeded as did her study of French until she returned to Oklahoma in the fall of 1948. Fran met Richard Earl (“Dick”) Brunsteter at the University of Oklahoma where Fran was in the first of several generations in the family to follow who joined Pi Beta Phi. They married on November 24, 1950. After college, they settled in Alva, Oklahoma, which became their permanent home, first on Murray Drive and later on Lake Drive. While raising a growing family, Fran attended Northwest Oklahoma State University and obtained a master’s degree followed by teaching English and art at Alva High School for a number of years. After retiring from her faculty position, she opened The Frame in Alva and conducted a successful original art framing business into the early years of the current millennium. She was passionate in her support of the Alva Mural Society in bringing many artists and murals to the community as well as her frequent involvement in the annual Nescatunga Arts Festival. Fran was an active member of PEO, Chapter AL, sang in the choir at First Presbyterian Church where she served as deacon and elder at various times, and often joined her friends’ “Walkie Talkie” walking group. She welcomed family and many guests (often large gatherings) into their home over the years. Dick passed away in December, 2006 and Fran continued living in Alva until 2011 at which time she moved to Brookdale Assisted Living in Oklahoma City in order to be more centrally located to her children and their families. Fran’s sister, Jane, of Bristow, Oklahoma, passed away in June 2015. Fran is survived by her five children and their families: Elizabeth (Steve) Parkhurst of Alva; Leslie (Roger) Williams of Shawnee, Kansas; William Worth “Dub” (Betsy) Brunsteter of Oklahoma City; Leigh Ann (Roger) Gaddis of Ada; and Kelly (Anthony) Misuraca of Edmond. She was, is,

and will always be “Mam-ma” to 13 grandchildren and ten greatgrandchildren. Memorial contributions may be made in her memory to the Alva Mural Society or the First Presbyterian Church. through Wharton Funeral Chapel. Visitation will be Wednesday from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. at the Wharton Funeral Chapel. The casket will not be open at the church. DORIS MAY (ELMORE) KIMMELL Memorial services to celebrate the lives of Doris May (Elmore) Kimmell and her sister-inlaw Margaret Lou Kimmell will be Saturday April 30, 2016, at 3 p.m. in the Hardtner United Methodist Church. ELBERT ENGLISH PIPER Elbert English Piper was born to Elbert and Ida English Piper in the hospital at Clayton, New Mexico, and left this life in the Alva Hospital, Alva, Oklahoma, on April 25, 2016, due to kidney disease and pneumonia. English grew up working on the two

Piper ranches – one in New Mexico (Colfax County) and the other in Woods County, Oklahoma, on land homesteaded by his grandparents, Thomas and Rachael Piper. He attended grade school at Green Valley School. He was a life-long Baptist. At the age of 12 he started school at Alva High – driving the 20 miles each way until his parents bought a house located where the current Baptist church parking lot is and he became a twelve year old bachelor until he was old enough to attend Northwestern State and live in a dormitory. At a Christmas Party in Vinson Hall, on December 19, 1942, English had his first date with his future wife, Marceline Hewes. They married in less than two years and became farmers until he became a Marine. His served in California at the Marine Corps Base, Camp Mathews, Camp Pendleton, and Ewa Field, Oahu, Hawaii where he was first chair, first clarinet in the West Coast Marine Corp band and the Dance Band at Ewa. Upon his honorable discharge at Camp Pendleton, he returned to Oklahoma and found that it was too late to enroll in engineering classes at OU. He found that the Moore, Oklahoma, band director had resigned. English, with his musical background, applied and was hired, and went to the afternoon classes in Moore High School – where he was hardly older than many of the students! He began engineering classes at OU in 1947 and graduated with a BSEE in June 1950. He was a member of Tau Beta Pi, Sigma Tau, Eta Kappa Nu and IEEE. He found few jobs for a recent graduate even if he was in the top 10 percent of the graduating engineers. He entered Oklahoma Highway Patrol School. Before receiving his commission, he received an offer to join the Boeing Company as a research and development engineer. He worked at Boeing with ever increasing responsibilities in Wichita while he and Marceline welcomed their daughter Sharon Theresa (Teri). He was a registered professional engineer and was president of the local IEEE chapter.

He found time to get his pilot’s license and even flew the family to Las Vegas for a vacation. The family took fabulous vacations every year – visiting all but four states. English continued schooling at night and earned an MS in electrical engineering from Wichita State University in 1963. His thesis is widely referenced to this day. General Electric, one of the contractors supporting NASA’s Apollo Program near Houston, made him a generous offer, which he accepted, to become the Apollo Program senior engineer. He worked alongside world famous engineers and scientists as well as the astronauts for the next four years. While living there he took classes in pursuit of a PhD from University of Houston. While in the St. Louis airport, he met his former boss from Boeing who subsequently offered him a job to return to work for Boeing as a helicopter avionics senior engineer in Philadelphia. He accepted and the family eagerly relocated in 1967. English again took classes from University of Pennsylvania while working on a PhD. After several years English was offered a transfer to Boeing’s head office in Seattle where he was the AWACS Radar Senior Engineer. He accepted the position, but this time the family was without their daughter, who was in school. The position was again exciting and interesting. As with much of his work, he could not talk about it at home. He did tell Marceline she could drive by Boeing Field and see what he was working on although he could not tell her what it was. It was a Boeing plane with a huge black sphere on it. Now, it is no secret, just an AWAC plane with a ray dome on top, all the better to see the world. After 46 days without a ray of sun and wet shoes at the door, the family felt they could do better (at least there was sunshine) and they sold their dream home in suburban Seattle and headed home to Woods County, Oklahoma. In addition to farming, English designed and supervised building a new home on the Piper Ranch west of Alva. Upon completion of that home, while Marceline recuperated from surgery in

South Barber Boys Tennis Team having good season By Yvonne Miller

South Barber Tennis Coach Jeff Lantz said, “Our 12 players have really pushed each other for spots on our team ladder and we are seeing the “Your Hometown Bank” results of that in how much more competitive we are as a team when we attend these tournaments.” Coach Lantz further said, “Despite having quite a bit of position swapping among the team, Grant Cantrell and Spencer Kimmell have been a mainstay at the #1Doubles position and are playing very good tennis this year, having won two tournaments and finishing 2nd in another. South Barber High School's Tennis is coached by Jeff Lantz. They are: (Back row l-r) William Lopez, They are building themselves a strong record and Trenton Jahay, Dale Hoch, Kadin Banks, Spencer Kimmell, Brian Farney, Ishan Patal; (Front row) if they play well over the next six days, they could position themselves well in the Regionals seeding Dakota Vickers, Trae Rathgeber, Grant Cantrell, Tanner Cloyd, J.T. Farney. Alfalfa County Clerk Laneta Unruh has announced she is running again for Alfalfa County clerk. Unruh is finishing her first term, to which she was appointed in July 2012. Unruh graduated from Northwestern Oklahoma State University with a bachelor of science degree in business administration. She has completed all three certification programs required by the OSU County Training Program: basic (75 hours), Advanced I (60 hours) and Advanced II (54 hours). All three deputies in Unruh’s office are currently obtaining their basic certification. Unruh has focused her first term on obtaining a very strong and supportive county officer team with the other seven county officers of Alfalfa County. She has prioritized customer service with the county constituents and patrons entering the clerk’s office. Unruh has also incorporated the electronic filing of records with Simplefile, a program that companies and attorneys’ offices can subscribe to. The books in the land records have been scanned in and computerized. Unruh and her deputies are currently linking the remaining books to the computer. The clerk’s office is currently enrolled into Oklahoma County Records, which is an on-

Also, Unruh plans to add work stations in the vault to allow patrons to view and research the records. Besides land records, the clerk’s office is responsible for all the purchasing for Alfalfa County. Unruh has currently completed two two-year audits and gained valuable information to correctly and effectively perform her job. She annually attends the training on payroll, retirement and insurance, and has completed the audits in these areas, also. Unruh enjoys spending time with her family and going to sporting events. She is a member of the Pleasant Plains Church of the Brethren south of McWillie. She looks forward to serving the residents of Alfalfa County for another term as Alfalfa County clerk.

continue to rise. To maintain the esthetic quality of the cemetery grounds, it is suggested that the casket be housed in some type of a vault. Over a grave, settling is a normal occurrence. However the amount of settling is greatly reduced when the casket has been encased. According to the Aline Star Cemetery Guidelines section 12, item e, dormant season decorations need to be removed by April 1. With Easter coming on the last Sunday of March, the board met at Star Cemetery March 21 to clean debris, prohibited items, and weatherworn decorations. The intent of this cleaning

The bench seats are being altered for greater comfort. To assist with location of burial sites, a detailed map is housed inside the pavilion. Election of officers was held. Current positions include Gary Booze, president; Kaye Reihm, treasurer; Brenda Dixon, secretary; and board members, Doris Booze, Melvin and Nina Ricke, Cary and Nancy Anthony, and Monty Shelite.

In Pioneer Parade Schrock rides in horseless carriage made by her husband years ago By Yvonne Miller “I felt very honored. It was really a tribute to LaMoine,” Kiowa woman Mary Schrock said of riding in the horseless carriage built by her husband of nearly 53 years before his death in October 2005. Kiowa’s Historical Society asked Schrock to ride in the carriage at the Kiowa (Kansas) 32nd Pioneer Days Parade last Saturday. Riding in the carriage was like slipping into a comfortable shoe as the husband and wife often dressed in early day period clothing and drove their antique vehicle at many area parades through the years. Schrock said their children and grandchildren had lots of fun learning to drive the carriage at family gatherings. However, they eventually felt the keepsake needed to be preserved somewhere other than one of their sheds so that LaMoine Schrock’s work could be appreciated by others. They donated it to Kiowa’s Historical Society. Member Buford Cloyd keeps the carriage in good shape and continues the parade tradition started by the Schrocks. A lifelong farmer and rancher,

LaMoine Schrock liked to build things, his wife said. He saw a picture of the carriage in a magazine and ordered the pattern and instructions. Schrock recalled that her husband and local man Chet Rugg spent a whole winter building the carriage. Rugg helped do all the metal work. She said local man, the late Dick Rathgeber, did the wooden part. The unique feature of the carriage is it does not have a brake. All the starting and stopping is controlled with a stick. “This was a dream of LaMoine’s,” his wife said. “He would be very, very pleased that it is still being used.” Schrock recalls working alongside her husband with the farming and cattle. They retired in 1992 and were able to travel to many destinations in the United States. LaMoine Schrock continued his love of building fun things he liked to play with such as antique-style remote airplanes that had small engines. He was a member of the Antique Modlers and with his

wife traveled to numerous contests. She recalled how much fun they had in their travels. The Schrocks moved to Arkansas four years and wintered in Arizona. They returned to Kiowa in 1996 where she continues to reside. The Schrocks have two daughters: Debbie and Susan. Debbie and her husband Ted Davis (in the car business) reside in Edmond and also part of the time at the Schrock home place east of Kiowa. Their daughter Susan, a retired teacher, and her husband Steve Knutzen (with Farm Bureau) reside in Iowa. They’ve given their parents six grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. “I have a wonderful family. I feel truly, truly blessed,” Schrock said. She praised Buford Cloyd for “taking excellent care” of the carriage. Next time you see it in a parade, think of all the fun and friendship that went in to building it and the years of love and fun the Schrocks had taking the early day vehicle to parades.

Oh my, who-dun-it? Well, Wild Bill Hiccup (Ron Rohr) is apprehending prospector Rush Well (Tamara Bogatay) who they believe may have shot Wyatt Twerp (Brent Grismer). This was a scene in the zany wild west skit during Kiowa's Pioneer Days Saturday. Kiowa woman Donna Williams wrote this slapstick insanity she named “Death at Old Kiowa City.” Believing Twerp was dead, the characters voiced their opinion of what his epitaph should be. When the “dead” man reacted to everyone's epitaphs they discovered Twerp had only shot himself in the toe. Others in the photo at left are Connie Lukins, Allen Sciara and Dan Lukins. Timberlake High School drama program will present “You’re Driving Me Crazy” on Tuesday, May 3, at 7 p.m. in the high school auditorium in Helena. Most people have some funny stories about learning to drive, and driver’s ed seems to add to the absurdity of this rite of passage. This play takes a hilarious look at the world of driver’s ed, especially from the instructor’s perspective. In them, we meet: 1) a nervous teacher who doesn’t seem to know the first thing about driving, 2) a teenage girl who brings some unexpected guests to her first driving class, 3) a teenage boy

who’s forced to share a car with his temperamental ex-girlfriend, and 4) a teenage girl who can’t break away from her smartphone long enough to learn how to drive. Immediately following the play

will be the second annual Timberlake’s Got Talent, a talent show featuring Timberlake students in grades 7 through 12. Cost of admission may be paid at the door.

The 38th annual Technology Student Association State Conference was held April 5 - 7 at Rose State College in Midwest City. This year’s conference, titled “Oh, the Places You’ll Go,” used a Dr. Seuss theme to reflect all that goes on at the TSA conference. Over 2,500 students, grades 6-12, descended on Rose State to compete in 56 different areas at the high school level and 48 different areas at the middle school level. Gwen Eberth, foreign exchange student from Germany, competed on

behalf of the Aline-Cleo TSA Chapter. Eberth placed third with her children’s story and first with her photographic technology entry. This is the first time that Eberth has competed for TSA and she was thrilled to see hard work paid off when they called her name. While there, she got to see firsthand many of the TSA contests that she has never seen before and met numerous students from around the state. Eberth is currently living with her host family, Stan and Kristy Schroeder of Cleo Springs. Kenneth Carmack is her TSA advisor.

By Sean Murphy OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) — The Oklahoma Legislature gave final approval on Tuesday to a resolution formally asking Congress to call a national convention to consider adding a balanced budget amendment to the U.S. Constitution. The Senate voted 30-16 to approve the House-backed joint resolution despite concerns of some members that a national convention could be expanded to consider issues beyond the federal budget. The Florida-based Balanced Budget Amendment Task Force, which specifically targeted Oklahoma and six other states this year to push the measure, says Oklahoma is now the 29th state to petition Congress. The U.S. Constitution requires two-thirds of the 50 states, or 34, to request a national assembly to draft amendments.

"Oklahoma was key," said Sen. Rob Standridge, a Republican from Norman who has pushed a similar resolution for four years amid bipartisan opposition. "You've got several significant groups that oppose it." Some of the fiercest opposition to the proposal came from fellow Republicans, who fear that national convention could get hijacked by those who want to weaken existing constitutional protections. "We can't foresee what will happen. There could be harm that comes from this," said Sen. Nathan Dahm, R-Broken Arrow. "We have a problem with the people representing us, not with the Constitution itself." Under Article V of the Constitution, adding an amendment can be done via a two-thirds vote of Congress and then ratification by three-fourths of states, or 38. That's the way all the current consti-

tutional amendments came about. There is also a second option under which two-thirds of the states, or 34, would have to request Congress to call for a national assembly to draft amendments. Any amendments would subsequently have to be ratified by at least 38 states to go into effect. Standridge said the growing national debt is among the nation's most pressing problems and that there is little evidence that Congress is willing or able to fix the problem. "This is what the founders gave us in the Constitution to correct those very errors," Standridge said. "If we're not willing to do that, then our grandchildren and children will face the consequences, in my opinion." Because the measure is a joint resolution, and not a bill, it becomes effective without the governor's signature.

Oklahoma 29th state to seek balanced budget amendment

More than $53K taken from man in traffic stop to be returned MUSKOGEE, Okla. (AP) — The Muskogee County District Attorney says that his office will return $53,234 that was seized from a man during a traffic stop that resulted in a drug-related charge. Police seized the money from Eh Wah, who lives in Dallas and is originally from Myanmar, on Feb. 27, when he was pulled over on U.S. 69 for having a broken brake light. Authorities say Wah, 40, consented to a search of his vehicle. Court documents don't say that the

deputy who searched Wah's vehicle found any drugs or other contraband. Wah is a tour manager for Burmese Christian rock band The Klo & Kweh Music Team. He told authorities the money was raised during the band's tour for a Thai orphanage and a nonprofit Christian school in Myanmar. District Attorney Orvil Loge said he made his decision Monday to dismiss the drug charge and efforts to keep the cash based on new information in media

reports. "I looked at the case today and spoke with the officers, and we agreed that now that we've filed the case, our burden of proof had been elevated," Loge said. "We thought we would not be able to meet our burden of proof, so we had to act." Wah said that the whole experience was unpleasant. "I was shocked and scared the first time I learned I had a warrant on me," Wah said. "My parents — they were terrified. We never thought any time in our lives we'd see something like this. We didn't do anything that would be close to this kind of thing, the drug thing. . You wake up in the morning, and it's the first thing in your mind." Money will be returned to Wah, the band, its bassist, a Nebraska-based church and an orphanage. Loge said that his office will mail a check for the entire balance of what was taken to Wah's attorneys.

Wichita, English was contacted by some of his old friends still working at Boeing. They told him of the need for engineers with his background and ended up offering him a position. He returned to engineering for another 13 years while still farming on the weekends. While employed there he was named to the prestigious Who’s Who in Aviation and Aerospace, 1983 edition, published by Janes of London. After his second retirement in 1990 Marceline and English traveled extensively to Alaska, Canada, Europe, Russia and numerous locations throughout the U.S. mainland. The two also attended OU football games continuously with season tickets for 37 years. English worked to expand the Woods County Rural Water District to allow the family and neighbors to receive potable water for themselves and their livestock without having to haul it. This required extensive coordination with Senator Bartlett’s office to make this happen. English and Marceline also worked tirelessly to stop the use of open pits of waste from oil well drilling operations being placed on farmland in Woods County. His surviving family, wife of over 72 years Marceline, and daughter Dr. Sharon (Teri) Piper, will forever mourn his loss. After this incredible life, English will remain in Woods County in a crypt at the Alva City Cemetery after a private sundown entombment. Remembrances may be shared with the family at www. marshallfuneralhomes.com. Memorial contributions may be made through the funeral home to the Free To Live Animal Sanctuary.
