Lynn Says
Camera sensor cleaning needed with interchangable lenses By Lynn L. Martin If you shoot photos exclusively with your cell phone or a point and shoot digital camera, you can quit reading. This column is for those who use digital cameras with interchangeable lenses. The first pro-level digital camera I purchased carried a Kodak name on a Canon body. I hate to tell you this, but the price was $27,000. Of course that sounds outrageous until you hear that by going digital and not buying film, I saved $70,000 in film costs the first year. So the expensive camera was a good investment by saving $43,000. Anyway, one of the warnings that came with this expensive camera was to be very careful when cleaning the sensor. I was told that if it was scratched, the repair bill would be $10,000 to replace it. Here is part of an article from Digital Camera World on the topic. Digital Camera World Excerpt Sensor cleaning can be terrifying for a photographer to try on his or her own. Considering how much you paid for it, delving deep into your digital camera’s
inner sanctum is the last thing most photographers want to do. First, why do we need a sensor cleaning tutorial like this? Dust and dirt can be your digital camera’s downfall. The interchangeable lens system makes it impossible to stop foreign particles entering your camera, and it doesn’t take long for them to stick to the sensor. Most of the time you won’t notice them, but when you’re shooting blue skies or white studio backdrops with a narrow aperture, dark flecks will become all too visible. Back in the days of film there was no such problem – you quite literally started each exposure with a clean canvas. However, with digital cameras, a spot of dust on the sensor will blight every shot until it’s removed. It’s only a matter of time until your digital camera’s sensor will need to be cleaned manually. The more you change lenses, the more you zoom and the dustier the places you go, the quicker this moment will arrive. To clean one of the most delicate parts of your camera, you do need to exercise caution. However, anyone with steady hands can do it. There are lots of specialist tools and solutions available for cleaning sensors, but they can be split into two camps –
wet or dry. You should think of sensor cleaning as a two-stage process: use a dry system first, then move on to the wet process if necessary. For both tasks, you’ll need to use a special setting on the camera so that the delicate shutter and mirror mechanisms stay out of the way. This means you can reach the sensor and clean to your heart’s content. Sensor Cleaning – What To Do Before You Start Before you start the sensor cleaning process, shoot a piece of white paper, to see how dirty the sensor is. Shoot in Aperture Priority (A) mode at f/22; you can use the pop-up flash. Take a similar shot after you’ve finished your sensor cleaning, comparing the images and seeing the improvement. It’s possible to zoom in and review these shots on the camera’s LCD, but a computer is better. Step 1 – Dry Clean To reach the sensor you need to get the mirror and shutter out of the way. On recent D-SLRs, go to Setup, then ‘Lock mirror up for cleaning.’ This option will be greyed out unless the batteries are fully charged. Press OK and press the shutter release. Step 2 – Use a Light You need good light to see the sensor – a head band flashlight is ideal, but a desk lamp can be used instead. Remove the lens and use a can of compressed air to blast dust from the sensor. Be careful not to touch the sensor or other internal components with the blower tip. You are too close if you see moisture gathering on the sensor. Sometimes air cleaning is enough. Take another picture of a white piece of paper or go outside and take a picture of the sky. Review in the image in the computer and see if the spots are gone. If not, the next step is to use a solution. Step 3 – Solution Use a specialist cleaner designed for the size of your camera, and read the instructions. Pre-impregnated swabs are good when you’re traveling, but a dry

Alva school board hears ACT score report By Lynn L. Martin The Alva school board learned that the ACT College Readiness test showed Alva seniors above the state average in all categories for 2015. In English, the average Alva High School (AHS) student score was 20.6 compared to the state average of 20.1; the math score was 20.0 compared to the State average at 19.8; Alva’s reading value was 22.5 compared to 21.5 for the state; science was 21 compared to 20.7 for the state and the composite of all scores was 21.1 compared to 20.7 for the state. These scores represent an improvement over past years. In 2011, Alva’s composite average was 20.0 versus the state’s 20.7; for the year 2012, scores were identical with Alva at 20.0 and the state at 20.7. In 2013, Alva was 20.3 and the state average was 20.8; in 2014 Alva’s average was 20.1 and the state was 20.7. So the 2015 score of 21.1 surpassing the state average of 20.7 is good news. Cherokee Pulling Out of Co-op The Cooperative Education Co-op is a long-standing cooperative agreement that enables many small area Oklahoma schools that can’t afford full time specialists to provide specialized services. Alva has served as the managing partner. Superintendent Parkhurst said the Cherokee School District has notified the co-op that they wish to quit participating. The
Alva superintendent said this leaves eight schools left in the cooperative. Enrollment Count Superintendent Parkhurst said the Alva district now has 1,020 students. At this same time last year the number was 1039. Most of the decline is in the younger grades. Speculation was that the decline in oil-field employment probably affected more families with young children. Enrollment at each site is as follows: Washington School – 260; Longfellow Elementary – 183; Lincoln Elementary – 114; Alva Middle School – 203 and Alva High School – 260. An item mandated by the state is that all students will have to received CPR training. Also the district is re-establishing mentoring teachers for new first-year teachers. Washington Principal Alysson Tucker reported their site has received a $7,000 grant to promote healthy lifestyles. The Alva school board approved the Professional Development Committee for the 2015-2016 school year. Alysson Tucker is the chair. Other members are Dana Manning, Deli Woods, Heather Lohmann, Gena Denton, Melissa Maharry and Tiffany Mata. Another committee was also appointed: the Internal Activities Committee. Members listed include Les
Potter, Jeff Levetzow, Steve Gale, Tammy Duncan, Randy Nation and Don Parsons. The Gifted and Talented Local Advisory Committee was named. Parents of elementary students will be Amber Bosch and Megan Lehr; teachers of elementary students will be Gena Denton and Danielle Cushenbery. Parents of middle school students will be Melanie Gaisford and Michelle Mackey; teachers of middle school students will be Kasey Adair and Stephanie Marteney. Parents of high school students will be Cassandra Scarbrough and Chandra Murrow; the teacher representative from the high school will be Tammy Duncan, and the administrator representative will be Tim Argo. Jewel Conner has been employed as a band assistant for the Alva Middle School. She will work 35 hours per week but with an extra duty addition. Carla Mitchel was employed as a 3/7 teacher at Lincoln School. She will work on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. Employees leaving include Kim Bolling, Melinda Timmons and Kathy Jenlink.

swab with a separate cleaning solution tends to give a more effective clean. Don’t use too much liquid. Step 4 – Cleaning Drag the swab slowly and smoothly from the left of the sensor to the right. Use a single movement, and don’t rub or scratch at the sensor. Turn the swab 90 degrees and drag the clean side from right to left. Throw this swab away. Turn the camera off to reset the mirror. There are special swabs for cleaning the sensor. Household Q-tip swabs are NOT a good idea. The cotton is not as soft and the little wooden stick can jab your sensor. Get the kind of swabs that are folded over the end of the stick.

Oklahoma teens win Kiowa’s 31st Labor Day 5K Race 404 sign up for race, 348 finish By Yvonne Miller “It was the worst heat and humidity I can ever recall in 31 years of the race,” Kent McBrayer said of the Labor Day 5K Race in Kiowa, Kansas, that he began and continues to codirect. McBrayer said 404 runners and walkers signed up for the race (some because they only want one of the T-shirts). Codirector Melissa Rector said 348

runners and walkers completed the 3.1 mile race that starts on the west end of Main Street, winds around the island and then leads participants throughout the brick streets of Kiowa. The race ends at the street in front of the community building with a crew of First State Bank sponsors awarding prizes and recording results. Last year Rector and Erin Merklein became co-directors to help McBrayer. “They did an amazing job,” he said. “I was really pleased with the turnout for the race this year and that we

He is a junior at Alva High School and entered the race Monday morning, McBrayer confirmed. For the third year, Tiarra Davis was the Women’s Division winner. She ran the race in 21:10, just one minute short of Place, the overall winner. She beat her own time from last year by 18 seconds. Davis is a senior at Pond Creek-Hunter High School and a member of their cross-country track team. Her father Kenneth Jr. of Pond Creek, is a Medicine

Davis was third overall in the race, behind Place and South Barber junior Gavin Doherty whose time was 20:52. That time made Doherty the First Kiowa Finisher (male). Teen charged with abducting Burlington girl By Marione Martin A 19-year-old man from Prague, Oklahoma, has been charged with abduction after a Burlington girl was reported missing on Thursday, Sept. 3. According to court papers, Alfalfa County Sheriff Rick Wallace was told about 7 p.m. to contact the girl’s grandmother. He talked to her by phone, and she said her 14-year-old granddaughter, of whom she is the legal guardian, had been missing since Wednesday, Sept. 2. Wallace went to the grandmother’s home, and she told him she last spoke by phone to her granddaughter on Wednesday about 4:30 p.m. Her granddaughter said she was at the C-Store in Burlington. During the interview, the grandmother said the girl had a boyfriend named Joseph Aaron Guess who stayed in the dorm at Northwestern Oklahoma State University in Alva. Sheriff Wallace contacted Agent David Sauls with the OSBI (Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation), and he said they would assist. Wallace also had Alfalfa County enter the girl in NCIC (National Crime Information Center) and put a BOLO (Be On the Look Out) out for her as a missing person runaway. Guess was first interviewed by Agent Sauls and again by Agents Sauls and Shane Vore as well as Sheriff Wallace at the university. Wallace said in his affidavit that Guess was not truthful, telling them he had just gone to Burlington, picked up the girl at school, and they had gone riding around before he dropped her off at the C-Store.
Later Guess voluntarily rode with Woods County Undersheriff Keith Dale to one mile east of the Woods-Alfalfa County line and then went with Alfalfa County Deputy Loren Nusser to show them where he had dropped off the girl. He took them to one block west of the C-Store and north a half block, saying he dropped her off there. They went to the Burlington Volunteer Fire Department, and Sheriff Wallace received a call from a woman who said her daughter told her that Guess had taken the missing girl to Pampa, Texas. Wallace told Agent Vore, and they took Guess inside the fire department building where they Mirandized him. According to Wallace’s statement, Guess admitted he had lied to them because he was scared. He said he drove the girl to Pampa, Texas, where he dropped her off at a gas station on the east side of town. He told them she met there with her biological aunt and an unknown man, and they left in a white vehicle with big chrome wheels. According to the affidavit, Guess told the officers he took her to Texas because she was pregnant by him. At 7:34 p.m. Guess was arrested for obstructing an officer and contributing to the delinquency of a minor. The missing girl was later located in Clovis, New Mexico, and the Clovis Police Department took her into custody. On Friday, Sept. 4, Joseph Aaron Guess, 19, of Prague was charged with a felony of abduction of a person under 15. The order signed by Assistant

District Attorney Westline Ritter on behalf of District Attorney Christopher M. Boring states that the charge is based on Guess taking the girl, under the age of 15, without the consent of her legal guardian to transport her to Pampa, Texas, for the purpose of hiding the fact that he had committed second degree rape and she was pregnant. This crime is punishable by imprisonment for not less than one year nor more than five years and/or a fine not more than $1,000 or both. Guess was also charged with two misdemeanors: (1) obstructing an officer and (2) contributing to the delinquency of minors. The first is punishable by imprisonment up to one year and/or a fine up to $500 or both. The second is punishable by a fine of up to $1,000 or imprisonment for up to one year or both.

Some members of the Burlington High School Class of 1958 were having so much fun they went through the Burlington Elks All-School Reunion Parade twice. Classmate Sam Schurter of Burlington drives one of his vintage John Deere tractors that pulls his friends in an antique buckboard. Schurter’s wife Marilyn, who is also a member of the Class of 1958, said that buckboard was sold at the Burlington Mercantile and was part of the Neff family’s extensive collection. Seated at the front of the wagon are (left to right) Stanley Cross and Junior Domnick, (visible behind him) Tom Lambert, Marilyn Schurter and Faye Hess. Classmates hidden in wagon are Norleen Polson Murrow, Bob Swafford and Christa Roth Moser. This class met at Schurter’s home and Marilyn said they were thrilled to have a visit from L.E. Castle, who taught vocational agriculture at Burlington. She said Castle is the only teacher they know of who is still living and taught their class. He continues to reside in Jet where he had a long career in the agriculture industry with livestock and land. Photo by Yvonne Miller

By Yvonne Miller The little town of Burlington buzzed with hundreds of extra people last weekend as alumni, their friends and families returned to their hometown for an all-school reunion. Out-of-town Elks were thrilled to see their old stomping ground in such great shape with new additions to the facility and such good care taken of the existing facility. Recent improvements to the school include the state-of-the-art vocal and band room, vo-ag building and shop, locker rooms, new windows, technological advancements, the new teacherage and more. On Friday night everyone enjoyed hamburgers, homemade ice cream

A guy who depends solely on his computer for advertising will not make it in rural Oklahoma. The majority of the population is very uncomfortable about presenting their credit card or bank account information online. Many older folks don’t turn on the computer their kids gave them. That’s why you need the Newsgram and its total market saturation mailing performance.
The U.S. Post Office made 100% saturation mailing possible a couple of years back. It costs the Newsgram about $2 grand postage per week to give you that enormous coverage.

Please let it rain was the saying all year, Well it did. Yards and elds are green with tall grass and brush. Now comes the bad part with this heavy fuel load this fall and winter could cause us to have some large wildres. Now is the time to be prepared. Clear all ammable brush from around your house, barns and out buildings. If possible mow re breaks to help slow down any re that starts. Give yourself and reghters all the help you can to protect your land or your house. 1. Mow when you have moisture to keep sparks down if you hit objects in the eld. 2. Drive or park in mowed areas if possible. 3. Keep brush and tall weeds away from out buildings. 4.If doing a control burn have a rebreak with water on hand. 5. NOT doing the top 4 has been the biggest reason that we have wildres. 6. CALL 911 so they know that your having a control burn.

BEFORE A WILDFIRE The following are things you can do to protect yourself, your family and your property in the event of a re. •To begin preparing, you should build an emergency kit and make a family communications plan. •Design and landscape your home with wildre safety in mind. Select materials and plants that can help contain re rather than fuel it. •Install a dual-sensor smoke alarm on each level of your home, especially near bedrooms; test monthly and change the batteries at least once each year. •Teach each family member how to use a re extinguisher (ABC type) and show them where it's kept. BEFORE A WILDFIRE THREATENS YOUR AREA… In and around your home •Clear leaves and other debris from gutters, eaves, porches and decks. This prevents embers from igniting your home. •Remove dead vegetation and other items from under your deck or porch, and within 10 feet of the house. Learn more about the basics of defensible space on the Firewise website. •Wildre can spread to tree tops. Prune trees so the lowest branches are 6 to 10 feet from the ground. •Cover exterior attic vents with metal wire mesh no larger than 1/8 inch to prevent sparks from entering the home. Creating an emergency plan •Assemble an emergency supply kit and place it in a safe spot. Remember to include important documents, medications and personal identication. Develop an emergency evacuation plan and practice it with everyone in your home. •Plan two ways out of your neighborhood and designate a meeting place. Learn more about emergency preparedness planning on NFPA’s emergency planning webpage. Learn how you can make a positive difference in your community. Visit www.readapted.org for more information.
