Koehn said that people who are United States citizens, residents of Oklahoma, and at least 18 years old may apply to become registered voters. People who have never been registered to vote before or who are not currently registered in the county of their residence and those who are registered but need to change their registration information may apply by filling out and mailing an Oklahoma voter registration application form postmarked no later than midnight Friday, Oct. 16. Koehn explained that applications postmarked after that time still will be accepted and processed; however, the applications will not be approved until after Nov. 10. The county election board responds in writing to every person who submits an application for voter registration. The response is either a voter identification card listing the new voter’s precinct number and polling place location or a letter that explains the reason or reasons the application for voter registration was not approved. Lynn Says

Advice from an 80-year-old man By Lynn L. Martin This was not authored by me, but well worth the read. 1. Have a firm handshake. 2. Look people in the eye. 3. Sing in the shower. 4. Own a great stereo system. 5. If in a fight, hit first and hit hard. 6. Keep secrets. 7. Never give up on anybody. Miracles happen every day. 8. Always accept an outstretched hand. 9. Be brave. Even if you’re not, pretend to be. No one can tell the difference. 10. Whistle. 11. Avoid sarcastic remarks. 12. Choose your life’s mate carefully. From this one decision will come 90 percent of all your happiness or misery. 13. Make it a habit to do nice things for people who will never find out. 14. Lend only those books you never care to see again. 15. Never deprive someone of hope; it might be all that they have. 16. When playing games with children, let them win. 17. Give people a second chance, but not a third. 18. Be romantic. 19. Become the most positive and

enthusiastic person you know. 20. Loosen up. Relax. Except for rare life-and-death matters, nothing is as important as it first seems. 21. Don’t allow the phone to interrupt important moments. It’s there for our convenience, not the caller’s. 22. Be a good loser. 23. Be a good winner. 24. Think twice before burdening a friend with a secret. 25. When someone hugs you, let them be the first to let go. 26. Be modest. A lot was accomplished before you were born. 27. Keep it simple. 28. Beware of the person who has nothing to lose. 29. Don’t burn bridges. You’ll be surprised how many times you have to cross the same river. 30. Live your life so that your epitaph could read “No Regrets.” 31. Be bold and courageous. When you look back on life, you’ll regret the things you didn’t do more than the ones you did. 32. Never waste an opportunity to tell someone you love them. 33. Remember no one makes it alone. Have a grateful heart and be quick to acknowledge those who helped you. 34. Take charge of your attitude. Don’t let someone else choose it for you. 35. Visit friends and relatives when they are in the hospital; you need only stay a few minutes. 36. Begin each day with some of your favorite music. 37. Once in a while, take the scenic route. 38. Send a lot of Valentine cards. Sign them, “Someone who thinks you’re terrific.”

39. Answer the phone with enthusiasm and energy in your voice. 40. Keep a note pad and pencil on your bedside table. Million-dollar ideas sometimes strike at 3 a.m. 41. Show respect for everyone who works for a living, regardless of how trivial their job. 42. Send your loved ones flowers. Think of a reason later. 43. Make someone’s day by paying the toll for the person in the car behind you. 44. Become someone’s hero. 45. Marry only for love. 46. Count your blessings. 47. Compliment the meal when you’re a guest in someone’s home. 48. Wave at the children on a school bus. 49. Remember that 80 percent of the success in any job is based on your ability to deal with people. 50. Don’t expect life to be fair.

Alva school board hears A-F report cards By Lynn L. Martin The Alva school board ended its regular meeting after about an hour to go into executive session to discuss the appraisal of real property. None of the principals were in attendance to make reports so that reduced meeting length about 30 minutes. The child nutrition report was not available as it is provided by newly installed software and not all of the bugs have been worked out. Superintendent Steve Parkhurst said they have not received the completed budget from the accountant, but that it appears the district budget will be up $3.3 million from last year and have a $5.6 million carryover. Parkhurst said a special school board meeting may be needed when the estimate of needs is received from the accountant. The board learned that a district-owned John Deere riding mower and trailer had been stolen from the district. Superintendent Parkhurst said payment of about $8,500 had been received

from the insurance company for the loss. That figure represents the value of the mower and trailer after depreciation. So far, the stolen property has not been recovered. Two new employees were hired: Kim Bowling and Brandon Harding. These hirings are caused by additional special needs students at Alva Middle School. Also, Parkhurst announced that Heather Lohmann at Alva Middle School was responsible for the school receiving a $2,500 grant for math classes. The Alva board approved the Gifted and Talented Plan completed by a special committee on Sept. 17. Approval was granted for an Alva High School student, Ridge Hughbanks, to attend the National FFA Convention to participate in the choir in Louisville, Kentucky, Oct. 24-31. He will be accompanied by his father. He attended the same convention last year. The A-F report cards were distributed to board members. Alva schools were

rated as follows: • Longfellow: A• Washington: A• Lincoln: C+ (C- last year) • Alva Middle School: C (C- last year) • Alva High School: AThe superintendent said a major unfairness is occurring for two reasons: special needs students are now required to take the same tests as regular students. Some of these kids simply require tests as before that were designed to accommodate their capabilities. Also, they are counted twice: first as part of the regular student body, and then as part of a special needs subgroup. Parkhurst distributed enrollment figures. Alva is down 20 students from last year (last year’s numbers are in the parenthesis): • Alva High School: 262 (254) • Alva Middle School: 206 (211) • Lincoln School: 114 (137) • Longfellow: 180 (216) • Washington: 250 (221)

Voters should apply early for absentee ballots Voters in Woods County who want to have absentee ballots mailed to them for the Nov. 10 City of Waynoka or Freedom Public Schools special election should apply now, County Election Board Secretary Sandra Koehn said today. Although the county election board can accept applications for absentee ballots until 5 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 4, Koehn urged voters who want to vote by

absentee ballot to apply early. Absentee ballot application forms are available at the county election board office located at 410 Fourth St. Suite F, Alva, OK 73717. The absentee ballot application forms also can be downloaded and printed at www.elections.ok.gov. Voters who have requested an absentee ballot can track their ballot at www.ok.gov/elections/Voter_Info/

Online_Voter_Tool/. “At least two mail transactions must be made,” Koehn said. “The county election board must mail the ballots to the voter and the voter must return the voted ballots by mail.” Ballots must be in the hands of the county election board by 7 p.m. on election day to be counted. Koehn said that any registered voter may vote by absentee ballot in any election in which he/she is eligible to vote. However, a voter must be registered and reside at an address within the geographical boundaries of a school district or municipality to be eligible to vote in school district or municipal elections. It is not necessary to give a reason – or excuse – for voting absentee. “While anyone can vote absentee without giving a reason, the law still provides several excuses, and it is to the advantage of some voters to use one of them,” Koehn said. By stating one of the following reasons on their applications, these voters can activate

Cherokee school board looks at new food program By Lynn L. Martin The Cherokee Board of Education heard two special reports Monday night at its regular October school board meeting. After an opening prayer by minister Max Boothby, the board heard from Zachary Hudson of Crossland Construction Company who displayed a large aerial photo of the football and track site now under construction. At the moment, any “vertical” construction is on hold until approval of the architectural plans is received from the state fire marshal. However, asphalt for the track will be laid soon because the temperature must be 50 degrees or higher for it to cure correctly. Also, Superintendent Donna Anderson said Alfalfa Electric Cooperative is correcting some lighting problems (not enough lumens) by installing new 40foot poles nearer the football field. The old poles stood at 30 feet. The construction company representatives agreed the facility should be ready for track season beginning in March 2016. Food Service Changes Next Bruce Churz, Neil Broderick and Greg Frost from OPAA Food Management of Chesterfield, Missouri, made a presentation about providing the cafeteria program for the Cherokee schools. The firm, now about 30 years old, provides food service for about half the schools in Missouri, and is now expanding to Oklahoma. Kingfisher is one of the nearby schools using their

OPAA’s PowerPoint presentation explained that they have learned that a greater percentage of students will participate in the various food programs if a greater variety is offered. The firm says their purchasing power is now so great they have as much food buying power as Wal-Mart and thus can save a lot of money compared to a district buying on their own. Members of the Cherokee school board expressed interest in instituting a free breakfast program. The OPAA

representatives said that will substantially increase the number of free and reduced-cost lunch students participating, which will then up the reimbursement from the federal government. The board will retain local control of all lunch prices and will retain hiring of employees. The OPAA food service will provide several weeks of training to the cook staff about their menus and recipes. OPAA will also make sure the district meets all government regulations and will handle all reports. Superintendent Anderson said the students will be offered two or three menu choices each day. She said that later on they are going to look at a supper program. This is because the only quality food many students get each day is at their school. The next step for Cherokee is to submit the outsourcing plan to the state department of education for approval. Once approval is obtained, bids from various food vendors will be sought. Cherokee is hoping for a January start date. The board heard from Ruth Richmond, elementary principal, that the program for three year olds started the

FFA officers focused on involvement Officers of the Burlington FFA chapter participated in the 2015 Oklahoma FFA Chapter Officer Leadership Training Conference Sept. 22 at the Enid Events Center in Enid. The eight state FFA officers planned and conducted this year’s conference based on the theme “How to put the IN in Involved.” Elected officers from each of the 61 high school FFA chapters in the northwest district attended leadership training designed to equip them with exciting tools for creating a successful chapter. Josh Brecheen, Coalgate, was the keynote speaker for the conference. Brecheen, state FFA president in 199899, is a state senator, horse trainer and accomplished speaker. “We are asking chapter officers to rate their involvement in school and in FFA,” said Drake Boyce, state FFA president.

At the Anthony (Kansas) Golf Course, 36 golfers played in the sixth annual tournament to raise funds for the Monty Thompson Continuing Education Foundation at South Barber USD255. Many of the participants were Thompson's golfing buddies, others were colleagues, friends and family who helped raise over $6,000.

Monty Thompson Foundation Memorial Golf Tournament raises over $6,000 By Yvonne Miller Monty Thompson was a beloved principal at South Barber Schools USD 255 and known for his love and dedication to youth and education. He lost his battle with cancer in the fall of 2008. Just before he passed away, the Monty Thompson Continuing Education Foundation was established in his name. Because Thompson was an avid golfer, the foundation began a fundraising golf tournament to support their efforts. Foundation board member and event organizer Mike Miller said the recent sixth annual golf tournament raised over $6,000, the best year so far monetarily. He said 36 golfers played in the tournament held at the Anthony (Kansas) Golf Course. Since the foundation’s inception, Miller said it has funded

over $37,000 in educational needs at South Barber. Those funds provide money for teachers to do projects in their classrooms for students, makes field trips possible, and purchases equipment and more to enhance students’ learning. Thompsons’ wife, Jane, who retired last spring from a long teaching career, always attends the golf tournament. The Thompsons’ daughters, Christy Hackleman and Audrey Pore, also attend with their families. Audrey’s twins Caydan and Connor Pore played in the tournament for the first time this year.

For the first time, grandsons of Monty and Jane Thompson, Caydan and Connor Pore, swung their clubs in the golf tournament held annually to raise funds for the educational foundation established in memory of their grandfather. They stand with foundation board member Mike Miller, organizer of the annual tournament.

FFA officers focused on involvement Officers of the Timberlake FFA chapter participated in the 2015 Oklahoma FFA Chapter Officer Leadership Training Conference Sept. “We are asking chapter officers to rate their involvement in school and in FFA,” said Drake Boyce, state FF A president. “Then we are going to share with them ideas on how to become more involved in these areas. It is important for them to set the ‘involvement’ example for their chapter members.” Officers attending from the Timberlake chapter were Jamie Thorp, president; Kamber LeForce, vice president; Anthony Wiens, secretary; Shaelee Sissom, treasurer; Dalton Jantz, reporter; Shannon Moore, sentinel; and Ashley Tacker, advisor.

same day as the board meeting with 18 kids showing up, and one more expected. A significant “new business” item was added to the agenda. A 15-year loan of $2.5 million with Farmer’s Exchange Bank was signed for funds to finish the construction project. The interest rate is 3.85 percent with payments due twice per year from the building fund. The superintendent said the district is still working on modifying last year’s financial numbers with the state.

She told the board the district had to return $15,000 in funds to the state because their carryover was too great. She doesn’t want that to happen again. The board voted to notify the county clerk that they plan a school election in February 2016. Finally, the school donated some bleachers to the Alfalfa County Fairgrounds. The fair board responded by sending a $2,500 check to the district. The board also voted to employ Ashley Egelston on a temporary support contract for the 2015-16 school year.

McMurphy attends Duke University workshop Randy McMurphy, Woods County District 2 commissioner, recently attended a workshop for Duke Energy Initiative at Duke University in Durham, North Carolina. McMurphy was asked to provide a brief overview of Woods County, the Mississippi Lime region, and its economic impact from increased oil and gas development. He also reviewed some of the major fiscal challenges to the county and northwest Oklahoma. McMurphy, representing the state of Oklahoma, along with those representing several other states with oil and gas production, highlighted topics such as the increase in sales, ad valorem and production tax and new jobs that could benefit Woods County and the state of Oklahoma as a whole. Conversely, the roads,

bridges and highways continue to deteriorate daily from the heavy equipment traveling to the job sites. Oklahoma exempted horizontal wells from gross production for four years after drilling, therefore paying to the schools but allocating no additional funds for the damaged roads. Commissioner Randy McMurphy was honored to be among the Duke Energy Initiative team and share information on the oil and gas production in his region. He has served on the Woods County commission since 2008 and is currently its chairman. McMurphy serves on and is vice-chairman of the Woods County Economic Development Board and serves on the Woods County Industrial Authority, Circuit Engineering District 8.

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) — Authorities are investigating after an inmate in the custody of the Oklahoma County Detention Center died at a hospital. Jail authorities say 34-year-old Antoinne Ellis complained of shortness of breath Monday while in the day room at the detention center. Authorities say officers contacted medical staff, who treated Ellis and began giving him oxygen.

THANK YOU The family of Henrietta Rudy would like to express our

appreciation for the cards, flowers, food and memorial contributions given in memory of our loved one. A special thanks to Pastor Aaron Wagner, the Ladies Circle of the Zion Lutheran church and the Marshall Funeral Home.

An ambulance took Ellis to the hospital, where he later died. A message seeking details on the cause of Ellis' death sent to the state's medical examiner wasn't immediately returned Tuesday. Per policy of the Oklahoma County Sheriff's Office, the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation will investigate the death. Ellis had been booked into the jail on Aug. 18 for trafficking cocaine.

Kiowa hospital in the black, physician search, clinic has more patients YTD Revitalization of Kiowa Manor By Yvonne Miller At the regular September meeting of the Kiowa (Kansas) District Hospital (KDH) Board, President Pat Myers called the meeting to order with all members present, including Chantae Simpson, Brenna May, Jim Parker and Jeff Miller. Hospital CEO Margaret Grismer also sat at the board table. Other hospital personnel attending the meeting were CFO Janell Goodno, Director of Nursing Heidi Courson, Manor Administrator Kim Balding and Physician Assistant Melissa Stroh. Goodno’s financial report showed the combined hospital/manor was in the black $548,453 at the end of August. Giving hospital statistics and financials, Goodno said the hospital’s bottom line was improved greatly because of a reimbursement (over $300,000) from the federal government (Medicare) for the installation of electronic health records mandated previously, costing KDH nearly a half million dollars. In August, the hospital had total operating revenue of $319,017. Total operating expenses were $440,818, resulting in a loss from operations of $121,800. Goodno said some of the increased expenses were multiple service agreements that are due annually, professional fees, etc. The addition of $95,333 tax revenue and $358,558 grant and tax credit revenue resulted in the $332,160 gain for the hospital in August.

The hospital’s statistical report for August showed 14 total admissions for 17 days of acute care. The clinic had 362 visits, which is 85 more patients year to date than last year. Total outpatient visits totaled 481. Manor Revitalization, Statistics and Finances Balding said the manor had 17 residents in September. The manor’s total operating revenue was $82,997. Total operating expenses were $140,657 for a loss of $57,660. The addition of $5,000 tax revenue and a donation of $7,821 curbed the loss to $44,795. Goodno said the $7,821 donation was from the Friends of the KDH and Manor Foundation. This was for the manor’s recent revitalization project that has in part enhanced the appearance of the facility to make a homier look and feel for residents. Balding said with installation of the new doors the revitalization project was 98 percent complete. The administrator said the manor held an open house. “It’s been overwhelming in a good way,” Balding said of the number of volunteers from the community who donated time and money for the revitalization project. These improvements help the manor provide more person-centered care, which is a goal of PEAK (Promoting Excellent Alternatives in Kansas). Now at level PEAK 2.0 , this is a Medicaid pay-for-performance incentive program. Nursing homes that engage in system changes to support personcentered care receive financial incentives through Medicaid reimbursement. The program focuses on five domains

essential to person-centered care: the foundation, resident choice, staff empowerment, home environment and meaningful life. DON Courson described her new Assistant Director of Nursing Holly Hoffman as “a great asset.” Courson said they are “going live” in October with the electronic patient charting system known as “Point, Click, Care.” Four department head positions were filled at the manor, so the team is complete. “We have lots of good things happening at the manor,” Courson said. CEO Comments Grismer told board members she’s spoken to Arthur/Marshall, the physician recruiting firm hired by the board to find applicants for the board to interview. She was told KDH had about 30 pings and about 50 percent of those were from foreign medical graduates. Of the remaining pings, none were a fit, as the docs were not interested in a rural community. Grismer said the search continues. The hospital had an inspection by the fire marshal with zero deficiencies. “We had good community support,” Grismer said from people willing to donate prizes and more for the district’s staff appreciation picnic held Oct. 3. Along with board members Myers

Zoo’s anti-venom helps Oklahoma boy recover from snakebites SLAUGHTERVILLE, Okla. (AP) — A 16-month-old Oklahoma boy is healthy again after recovering from two venomous snake bites with help from an unconventional anti-venom stocked at the Oklahoma City Zoo. Blake Skinner was playing in his

backyard in Slaughterville on Sept. 10 when he was bitten by a pygmy rattlesnake, said his mother, Letia Skinner. He spent four days at a hospital and received 22 vials of conventional anti-venom before heading home. His mother sensed something was still wrong. "His foot got a little bit of heat to it, and that was my pull to take him (back) to the ER," Letia Skinner told The Oklahoman (http://bit.ly/1MbLbDQ ). Tests done at an Oklahoma City hospital showed that the anti-venom conventionally used in the U.S. didn't help the boy recover as thought. There's no anti-venom made for pygmy rattlesnakes. Venom from pigmy rattlesnakes keeps blood from clotting, and even a

slight injury could have led to the boy's death, said his doctor, William Banner. Banner contacted the zoo and staff shared their stock of anti-venom made against Mexican and South American rattlesnakes. It worked right away, and the boy's mom says he's as healthy as ever. The doctor theorized that the zoo's anti-venom worked because pygmy rattlesnakes are close genetic cousins of those snakes. "I think this is going to spur a lot of research in this area," said Banner, who is also head of the Oklahoma Center for Poison and Drug Information. There have been 13 pygmy rattlesnake bites in Oklahoma this year, up from four bites in 2014, according to the center.

1 dead in OK from multistate salmonella outbreak OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) — One person has died in Oklahoma as a multistate outbreak of salmonella infection linked to imported cucumbers continues. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said as of Monday, 732 people infected with outbreak strains of salmonella have been reported in 35 states. The Oklahoma death brings the total number of fatalities to four. There was no immediate information available on the identity or hometown of the Oklahoma victim. Scientists say It can take up to a week from the time people eat food contaminated with salmonella before they get sick. Also, cucumbers have a shelf life of up to 14 days, and it's not unexpected to continue to see illnesses reported after the recalls. The CDC continues to investigate.

By Justin Juozapavicius TULSA, Okla. (AP) — At least three candidates have emerged for the soonto-be vacant Tulsa sheriff's position after its longtime leader was indicted and resigned last week, and all of the contenders pledged to restore public trust to an embattled agency. Tulsa Police Detective Dan Miller, a nearly 20-year veteran with the agency; cab company owner Jim Rice Jr., who has served with several law enforcement agencies; and John R. Fitzpatrick III, a paralegal and law firm legal investigator have all said in recent weeks that they're vying for the position. The special primary election is set for March 1, with a special general election on April 5, if necessary. The filing period for sheriff's candidates will be Dec. 7-9. Tulsa County Sheriff Stanley Glanz resigned last week after a grand jury investigating allegations of agency wrongdoing indicted the veteran sheriff on two misdemeanor counts. Glanz submitted

his resignation effective Nov. 1 — nine days before he's due in court for a hearing on the indictments. One of the indictments accused Glanz of not releasing a 2009 report that raised questions about insufficient training for volunteer deputy Robert Bates, a close friend of his who fatally shot an unarmed man in April. Bates gave thousands of dollars in cash and equipment to the agency and has pleaded not guilty to second-degree manslaughter in the killing of 44-year-old Eric Harris killing and says he mistook his handgun for a stun gun. "(Glanz) trusted people that took advantage of him," said Miller, who added he would have acted immediately on the findings of the 2009 memo, which the sheriff's office denied the existence of before it was released by an attorney after Harris' shooting. "(Glanz), he had a blind trust of these people and they took advantage of him. You've got to hold people accountable as a leader," he said in an interview last week.

If Rice wins, he said he would continue suspension of the reserve deputy program until more study could be done. The program was at the center of the Harris killing, as Bates accompanied non-volunteer deputies on the sting mission. Rice says he'd also vet the ranks for officers who were elevated due to nepotism or other circumstances. "The whole Bob Bates thing is just wrong. I've had sergeant friends who tried to stop (Bates from patrolling) but they were kicked out of their squads; one was put on jail duty because he wouldn't let Bob Bates work in the drug taskforces," Rice said. Fitzpatrick wants to run jail operations like a public company and restore the office he says is tarnished to demonstrate to residents that the sheriff isn't "landlocked." "I would run it like a public company, and the residents of Tulsa County are the shareholders, and they have a right to transparency," he said.

some special conditions that make it easier for them to use absentee ballots. The reasons are: • Voters who are physically incapacitated and voters who care for physically incapacitated persons who cannot be left unattended may vote absentee. They may apply only by mail, fax or email. • Voters who are confined to nursing homes in the county may vote absentee. An absentee voting board actually goes to the nursing home a few days before the election, sets up a small polling place and allows these people to vote under circumstances similar to those at a regular precinct polling place. They may apply only by mail, fax or email. • Military personnel and residents of the county living overseas and the spouses and dependents of each group are eligible receive absentee ballots. These voters may apply only by mail, fax or email. Military personnel should contact the voting service officers in their units for application forms and additional information or visit the Federal Voting Assistance Program website (www.fvap. gov/oklahoma) for more information and instructions. By Sean Murphy OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) — A granite monument of the Ten Commandments that has sparked controversy since its installation on the Oklahoma Capitol grounds was being removed and will be transported to a private conservative think tank for storage. A contractor the state hired began removing the monument shortly after 10:30 p.m. Monday. The work comes after the Oklahoma Supreme Court's June decision that the display violates a state constitutional prohibition on the use of public property to support "any sect, church, denomination or system of religion." The state is paying the contractor

about $4,700 to remove the monument and take it to the Oklahoma Council of Public Affairs' offices a few blocks away, Office of Management and Enterprise Services spokesman John Estus said. The Oklahoma Highway Patrol increased security around the monument earlier Monday, and barriers were erected to keep visitors from getting close to it. Estus said the decision to remove the monument under the cover of darkness was made to avoid disturbing workers at the Capitol and to keep protesters from demonstrating while heavy equipment was being used to detach the two-ton monument from its base. "We wanted it to be done as quickly

and efficiently as possible, and doing it at night gave us the best opportunity to do that," Estus said. Originally authorized by the Republican-controlled Legislature in 2009, the privately funded monument has been a lightning rod for controversy since it was erected in 2012, prompting a lawsuit from Bruce Prescott, a Baptist minister from Norman who complained it violated the state constitution. "Frankly, I'm glad we finally got the governor and attorney general to agree to let the monument be moved to private property, which is where I believe it's most appropriate," Prescott said Monday. "I'm not opposed to the Ten Commandments. ... I'm just opposed to it being on public property." Its placement at the Capitol prompted requests from several groups to have their own monuments installed, including a satanic church in New York that wanted to erect a 7-foot-tall statue that depicts Satan as Baphomet, a goat-headed figure with horns, wings and a long beard. A Hindu leader in Nevada, an animal rights group and the satirical Church of the Flying Spaghetti Monster also made requests. The original monument was smashed into pieces last year when someone drove a car across the Capitol lawn and crashed into it. A man arrested the next day was admitted to a hospital for mental health treatment, and formal charges were never filed. A new monument was erected in January. Former state Rep. Mike Reynolds, a Republican who voted to authorize the monument, was one of a handful of supporters who watched as the monument was removed Monday night. "This is a historical event," Reynolds said. "Now we know we have to change the Constitution. It would be good to get rid of some of the Supreme Court justices, too." Several conservative legislators have promised to introduce a resolution when the Legislature convenes in February to send to a public vote an amendment that would remove the article of the constitution that prevents the use of public money or property for religious purposes.

HELP! – This wagon ambush is just one of the exciting scenes from the Medicine Lodge Indian Peace Treaty Pageant reenactment held in a grassy amphitheater in the Gypsum Hills just southeast of town. In the wagon playing a settler woman, Lacy Philips holds her beloved, played by Matthew Colborn, after the robbers shot him in a hold-up on the prairie. Thousands came to watch the reenactment and take in all the authentic Peace Treaty festivities the last weekend of September. Native Americans in full, colorful dress danced in pow wows; there were encampments, cowboy shows and rodeos; night shows reliving a bank robbery, saloon girls and temperance leader Carry Nation during those wild west days; parades and much more. US interior secretary announces tribal lawsuit settlement DURANT, Okla. (AP) — The head of the U.S. Department of the Interior says a $186 million settlement has been reached with the Chickasaw and Choctaw nations over the government's handling of some tribal resources and properties. Secretary Sally Jewell announced the settlement Tuesday at a ceremony

From Page 29

at the Choctaw Nation headquarters in Durant. The settlement ends a nine-year lawsuit alleging the federal government mismanaged 1.3 million acres of timberlands in southeastern and south-central Oklahoma, with some claims more than 100 years old. Under the settlement, the government

and May, Grismer attended the Kansas Hospital Association Convention in Wichita. May said a great deal of discussion regarded the Affordable Care Act also known as Obamacare. The general consensus was how and if this government-run health care system will continue hinges on the November 2016 presidential election. Myers said he learned that even if Obamacare was repealed it would take an estimated 15 years to correct. Hospital Board Action What to do with the hospital’s old generator that still sits at the former hospital location at 810 Drumm St. was on the agenda. It would cost in excess of $80,000 to move that generator to the manor and tie it in to work there (utility costs, etc.). That old generator reportedly has a salvage value of $12,000 with a $6,200 disconnect fee. After discussion, the board approved selling the generator for salvage for a profit of $5,800. The generator already in place at the manor will maintain one wing at a time. The board agreed that will be

sufficient for now and in an emergency situation they could always transport manor residents to open hospital beds. In open session Grismer said they did not sign a contract with the candidate to provide in-house pharmacy services. She said pharmacist John Hagood agreed to continue filling the position until a replacement is found. Board members decided for now not to sell the hospital owned property at 219 S. Ninth St. (the empty lot next to the hospital house). After an executive session of nearly two hours, in open session the board approved spending not more than $6,000 for WebPT. This is electronic medical record software for the physical therapy department. That money will also purchase an audiometer. As reported in a separate story that previously ran in the Newsgram, Mike Loreg, director of the South Barber County EMS, visited with the KDH board members during open session at the September meeting. This regarded the Barber County commissioners’

will pay the Chickasaw Nation $46.5 million and the Choctaw Nation $139.5 million. In return, the tribes will dismiss their lawsuit and set aside future litigation. Jewell says the agreement represents the beginning of a new chapter in the government's relationships with the Oklahoma-based tribes.

announcement that the county will no longer pay health insurance premiums for EMTs as they have previously. This is effective Jan. 1, 2016. The county pays 90 percent of employees’ insurance. The commissioners had requested that KDH take over paying health insurance premiums for the southern Barber County EMTs. Currently, KDH pays 50 percent of employees’ insurance. After visiting with Loreg the KDH board realized besides paying the EMTs’ premiums, that would basically have the hospital operating the EMT service. That’s because Loreg made it clear he was not interested in being the ambulance service director for KDH. Loreg told the board he was certain the hospital could not afford to provide him with benefits he has now including full family insurance, a vehicle and more. After discussion, the KDH board said no to the commissioners and will not be paying the EMTs’ insurance. The regular October meeting of the KDH board will be Thursday, Oct. 22.

In past years this event has been held in both the Alva and Cherokee communities. Mark your calendars for July 23, 2016, when the event will celebrate “There’s No Place Like HOPE!” The event committee has been formed with individuals from Waynoka and Alva with plans underway. With the oil boom decline, businesses have to advertise smarter or this happens. Merely putting your name out there on a few signs doesn’t cut it. An understandable location explanation, an offer that makes people stop and go “whoa” is what it takes.

The Newsgram uses the post office’s saturation mailing every week to reach everyone. No one else comes close!
