year earlier than originally scheduled, thanks to the county’s efforts to borrow money. The last step in that process was approved at Monday’s end-of-themonth meeting. The commissioners approved a resolution and an agreement to borrow $1 million from a state program interest free and fee free. The acquisition of a new, larger 200-kilowatt generator for the courthouse is nearing its final stages as well. The generator will provide emergency power to the courthouse when needed. The commissioners approved seeking bids for both the generator and its installation. Last meeting’s disposal of mowing equipment for District 3 also received its final step as the resolution for that action was approved. The commissioners opened bids for grader tires and approved all of them. The tires will be purchased at the lowest cost available when needed under
whichever bid works to the county’s advantage. The tires will cost from $965 up to as much as $1,400 per tire depending on which bid the county is able to use at the time the tires are needed. A form to reimburse county school districts for revenue lost due to additional homestead exemptions was signed by the commissioners. Form 969 will permit the county’s schools to receive a total of $2,400.04 – the total of lost revenue from 36 exemptions that lowered tax rolls by $30,754 in evaluations. Sixteen road crossing permits totaling $15,750 in fees were approved. District 1 had eight permits ($9,500 in fees). District 2 had four ($4,250) and District 3 also had four ($2,000). In other business, the commissioners approved minutes of their previous meeting, payroll warrants, maintenance and operations warrants and blanket purchase orders.

The Aline Star Cemetery Association held its annual meeting Tuesday, April 16. This yearly meeting is held on the third Tuesday of April in Aline for those who own burial space(s) or are interested in purchasing sites. Donations to maintain the grounds are appreciated at any time. The construction of a pavilion has been the highlight of accomplishments over the past year. The previously existing structure once housed maintenance equipment then, later, the cemetery plot map. After the former structure was removed, the area was cleared of overgrown bushes to prepare the area for the new pavilion. The cemetery plot map is housed in the new structure that is furnished with benches to accommodate those attending services. To alleviate confusion concerning the decorations on graves, permanent signs have been posted at the outer gates and on two sides of the new pavilion. The signs have been in place since prior to Memorial weekend 2012. A written notice is to be mailed to owners or family members of those graves that have decorations that are excluded in the Aline Star Cemetery Guidelines. Because of Holy Week activities prior to Easter on March 31, spring cleaning of Star Cemetery was held April 6. The intent of the board conducting this cleaning is to assist families and the mowing crew maintain the attractiveness of the grounds. Election of officers was held. Current positions and those holding them are President John Eugene Lamle, Treasurer Kaye Reihm, Secretary Brenda Dixon, and board members Gary and Doris Booze, Melvin and Nina Ricke, Lola Jean Lamle, and Dan Baker.

Lynn Says
Another great movie historical movie: ‘42’ By Lynn L. Martin Earlier this year, I saw the movie “Lincoln,” which portrayed the end of the civil war and the abolition of slavery. I made the comment that the film should be required viewing in every public school in America. The movie “42” deserves the same attention. “42” is the uniform number of Jackie Robinson, the first African American player to gain a playing spot in baseball’s major leagues.
This film was particularly attentiongetting for me because it occurs about five years before I discovered the thrill of listening to Cardinals play-by-play radio by Harry Carry and Jack Buck. There were three or four years that my grandmother and I heard nearly every single game in the Cardinals season. The names in the movie “42” are very familiar to me. The first image in the movie is a portrait of Stan Musial, the great Cardinals right fielder and first baseman. He was one of the top home run hitters of that era. We always knew that when “Stan the Man” stepped to the plate, the Cardinals might win another game.
Eddie Stanky was a name in the movie. I recall when he was the Cardinals manager. Before that, he played short stop for the Dodgers. In those days, I was such a baseball nut I could easily name the starting players for the Cardinals, along with their batting averages, and how many home runs they had that season. Great radio play-by-play baseball was always more compelling than television. TV announcers tend to let the pictures replace lots of talking. Radio play-by-play frequently had you sitting on the edge of your seat and holding your breath. Anyway, back to the movie, “42.” See Says Page 30

He taught math and was a successful coach at Cherokee Junior and Senior High School and later joined the postal service. He married Virginia Mae Bonner of Dacoma in 1952. They had three children. The family gatherings at mother Rowena’s home in Cherokee with the four brothers, all of whom completed college, included contentious tennis doubles’ matches and golf games
with the participation of Rowena’s twelve grandchildren and were things Jack very much enjoyed. He was a devoted father who encouraged the musical and academic pursuits of his children. He and Virginia were married for 61 years prior to Virginia’s death on February 28, 2013. He was preceded in death by wife Virginia, brother Bob and grandson Jeremy. He spent large amounts of time at Georgia and Ross Patton’s farm south of Cherokee while growing up. He graduated from Cherokee High School in 1942 and joined the Navy. He was selected to enter the Navy V-12 program – an accelerated officers’ training program set up in war time. He was sent to Milligan College in Tennessee, the only college campus during World War II taken completely over by a branch of the armed services. While there, he excelled in academics and sports. He was starting guard on the Milligan College basketball team of 1943-1944 composed of V12 servicemen, which had a national ranking and went 22-2 that season, beating Duke and North Carolina on successive nights on their home courts. The movie portrays the cruel taunting and ridicule that Negro Jackie Robinson endured as the first man to wear a Major League uniform. It is a great lesson to look back and see how ridiculous we were as a nation regarding segregation. I was talking to a teacher at Burlington about the movie and she gave the opinion that the degradation and cruel prejudice against Robinson was underplayed in the movie. We both felt while the movie showed four or
five scenes of cruel discrimination, our guess is during his first year it was probably dished out on a daily basis. In conclusion, here’s what Wikipedia has to say: “42” is a 2013 biographical sports drama film written and directed by Brian Helgeland about the life of baseball player Jackie Robinson, who wore jersey number 42. The film stars Chadwick Boseman as Robinson, Harrison Ford as Branch Rickey, Christopher Meloni as Leo Durocher, John C. McGinley as Red Barber, T. R. Knight as Harold Parrott, Lucas Black as Pee Wee Reese and Nicole Beharie as Rachel Isum. “42” was released in North America on April 12, 2013.

Underage drinking is not a youth problem, it is an adult problem It’s spring and we’re entering a season of celebration for high school students. Although this seems like the end of an era, it is really the beginning of many celebrations of life and accomplishments for children and students. Youth often equate times of celebration with alcohol use. The Woods County Coalition is taking this opportunity to give parents a call to action to help eliminate underage drinking. Underage drinking is not a youth problem, it is an adult problem. In Woods County in 2012: • 64.9 percent of tenth graders surveyed and 80.8 percent of twelfth graders surveyed said they had had more than
just a few sips of alcohol in their lifetime. • Of those youth, 60 percent of tenth graders and 75.5 percent of twelfth graders said they got alcohol from someone 21 or older. Twelve percent of tenth graders and 22.4 percent of twelfth graders got it from home with a parent’s permission. Parents often allow a place for youth to drink as a means of preventing drinking and driving. However, there are other risky behaviors that take place at underage drinking parties: • Unplanned and unprotected sex • Sexual assaults • Other drug use • Compromised reputations • Violence • Drug and/or alcohol overdose Additionally, it is against the law to host an underage drinking party. The Oklahoma Social Host Law holds accountable any person who provides a place for an underage drinking party, whether that person provides the alcohol or not. A $500 fine can be issued. Parents are one of the most effective deterrents to preventing underage drinking. It is important for parents to talk to their child about alcohol use.
• Reinforce your expectations – set rules and establish consequences. Be clear – drinking or drug use is unacceptable. Being an upperclassman has privileges, but it also has responsibilities. • Encourage teens to make each moment count – teens may not understand that bad choices may cause them to miss out on future opportunities. The longer a youth waits to drink, the fewer alcoholrelated problems they are likely to have. Teach teens to wait until they are 21 if they choose to drink. Student scholarships and grants may be lost by getting an MIP (Minor In Possession). • Provide safe alternatives – plan chaperoned alcohol-free parties. Talk to other parents to ensure they are not providing a place for youth to drink. • Set a good example – do not let teens drink or use any illegal chemicals, including prescription drugs, under your supervision. Serving or providing alcohol to underage guests or allowing them to drink alcohol in your home or any other property you control is against the law. • Give your teen an out – let them blame you if they need to leave a party. Make sure they know they can call or text you to ask for a ride home. As community members, we are asking you to help us create a climate of celebration that is safe and memorable, ensuring future health and happiness for our high school students.
