Kiowa’s Chief Theatre Ward, Pixler movie theatre now has announce new rocker-style seats engagement Kiowa’s Chief Theater has a fresh new look that will be super comfortable for movie-goers. Instead of the old wornout seats, 195 new blue upholstered rocker-style seats with cup holders are in place. Last weekend Chief Theater showed Divergent (April 25-27) with just 42 seats installed. Last Monday a crew of Darrell Talbert’s Technical Cinema Services installed the remainder of the seats. Those new seats actually total 201 with the six places built for a wheelchair
to access. Wells Paint Service gave a fresh coat of paint to the theater’s inside before the cushy new seats were installed. The seats cost about $45,000. Theater operators Bill and Pam Cox said funding for the project came in part by Kiowa’s Turner Youth Foundation. Jim Molz donated $90,000 for the new digital projector over a year ago. The approximately $20,000 remaining from the Molz donation helped with the seat purchase. A few other private donations also went toward the project.
Jeff and Sherry Ward, Pratt, Kan., announce the engagement of their daughter, Samantha Karla, to Zachary Paul Pixler, son of Bryan and Susan Pixler, also of Pratt. The wedding is planned for May 31, 2014, at Sacred Heart Church in Pratt. The bride-elect will be graduating from Fort Hays State University with a bachelor’s degree in elementary education. She is the granddaughter of David and Juanita Ward, Betty Cushenbery and the late Fred Cushenbery. She is currently employed at Lincoln Elementary School in Hays, Kan. The bridegroom-elect graduated from Fort Hays State University in 2013 with a bachelor’s degree in secondary education and technology studies. He is the grandson of Marguerite Johnson, the late Marion Pixler, the late George and the late Pauline Lubers. He is employed at Ulysses High School, Ulysses, Kan.

In 1966, Buddy and Judy opened Pettit’s House of Carpet, which he owned and operated until the time of his passing. He was a widely respected businessman in the community and surrounding area. By Lynn L. Martin After an executive session, the Alva Board of Education returned and hired Les Potter to replace Randy Atkins as Alva High School principal. Potter is
currently the upper-elementary principal in Pawhuska. He explained that his son, Derek, had married Hattie Pfleider of Alva and “that is our Alva connection.”
Potter said he was born in Pawhuska, grew up in Pawhuska and graduated from Pawhuska High School. After graduating from Oklahoma State University, he was hired to teach biology, anatomy, physiology and coach football at Claremore High School. Later, in 1992, he returned to Pawhuska and was assistant high school principal for six years before moving to the upper-elementary principal position. He said his wife will likely remain in Pawhuska for several months selling their house and winding up other obligations. Principal’s Reports Tracie Leeper reported an enrollment at Washington School of 90 kindergarten students and 102 first graders for a total enrollment of 192. Steve Shiever said Longfellow Elementary had 97 pre-kindergarteners, 54 second graders and 66 third graders for a total of 217 students. Tim Argo at Lincoln school said enrollment there is 73 fourth graders and 73 fifth graders for a total of 146. Ron Sunderland, principal at Alva Middle School, has 220 students with 67 sixth graders, 78 seventh graders and 73 eighth graders. Alva High School enrollment is 53 ninth graders, 64 tenth graders, 62 eleventh graders and 55 seniors for a total of 234. Tracie Leeper also mentioned a bit of vandalism at Washington School with a broken window. Randy Atkins said the baseball team will be playing in regionals on Thursday. Superintendent Steve Parkhurst said finances look good with a likely carry-over of $1 million. He said the electronic audit of the Title 1 program was finished with a finding of complete compliance. The district may have to add some money from the general fund to help the cooperative education project. He mentioned that once again the district will use the TLE teacher evaluation system and he will use the McRell software for principal evaluation. A lease was signed with Eric Smith to host a girls’ and boys’ basketball

Official: Wildfire Car leaves road, rolls and catches fire not caused by By Marione Martin A Jet woman was injured when the vehicle she was driving went off the road, rolled and caught fire. The incident occurred at 11 a.m. on Sunday, May 4, on County Road 720 a half mile south of Coal Road in Alfalfa County. Jessica Leah Gilliland, 30, of Jet was transported by Alfalfa County EMS to St. Mary’s Hospital in Enid where she was admitted in stable condition with trunk internal injuries. There were six juvenile passengers in the vehicle, five female and one male. No information was available on the juveniles. The Oklahoma Highway Patrol
report states that Gilliland was traveling southbound on County Road 720 at a speed improper for the gravel roadway. She lost control of the vehicle, which went off the left side of the roadway and struck an embankment. The vehicle rolled one time, coming to rest on its wheels. The vehicle caught fire. Because of the fire, the vehicle information was unavailable. Trooper Gene Goodson investigated, assisted by troopers Linda Hartley, Seth Wallace, Jason Burch, Coby Snyder and Darrin Lancaster along with the Alfalfa County Sheriff’s Office, Alfalfa County EMS and Jet Fire Department.
controlled burn
OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) — Officials now say that a wildfire that has scorched more than 5 square miles in central Oklahoma was not started by a controlled burn. Officials initially said a controlled burn got out of control and caused the fire to spread, killing one person and destroying more than 40 structures in rural Logan County. But Oklahoma Incident Management Team spokesman Stan May said Tuesday that investigators now say they don't think that theory is correct. May says investigators are looking into other possible causes and should release information in the next few days. May says firefighters hope to have the fire fully contained on Tuesday. The National Weather Service has issued a red flag warning for western and central Oklahoma until 10 p.m. Tuesday.

Runners and spectators epitomized ‘Boston Strong’ By Yvonne Miller Boston Strong. That theme was everywhere during the Boston Marathon weekend – on shirts, on billboards, on homemade signs, in huge lettering across skyscrapers, on construction cranes, on newspaper and television headlines. Most importantly that resilience and love of city and the USA was evident in the hearts of Bostonians, the estimated million spectators and 36,000 runners for the 117th running of one of the major marathons in the world. Since the finish line bombing that killed three and seriously maimed many others last year on April 15, 2013, Boston and America rallied. People who aren’t even runners, trained the past year to make the journey. Those runners raised money for victims, their families and hundreds of other charities. The outpouring of generosity was phenomenal. My sister, Jennifer Schubert-Akin of Colorado, ran her 20th consecutive Boston Marathon, finishing in 3:55:01 which is three and a half minutes faster than last year. To qualify for next year’s race in her age division, she had to finish within 4 hrs. 10 min. We were all thrilled she had time to spare. Through the years she raised over $64,000 for Multiple Sclerosis (MS) research, a debilitating disease that affects her sister. This year that amount rose closer to $70,000 thanks to your generosity. Checks can still be made out to the National MS Society and mailed to Jennifer Schubert-Akin, 27855 Whitewood Drive East, Steamboat Springs, Colo., 80487.
The fact that an American man won the Boston Marathon for the first time since 1983 was so appropriate since the sentiment heard over and over again was “We took our city back” and “We took our marathon back.” Jennifer said when an American man won the race, spectators along the race route held up signs that “MEB WON!!” which had the sea of runners cheering. She said throughout the race runners see inspirational and hilarious signs, “just to make us laugh” held by spectators along the route. This year numerous signs sent an adamant message, “This is our ******* city!” The day was described as a rebirth of Boston, which was founded September 7, 1630 as the city’s beautiful architecture reveals. The Boston Marathon started in 1897 with just 18 runners. The marathon is run on Patriot’s Day (the third Monday in April), which is a celebration of the beginning of the Revolutionary War and the beginning of the free and prosperous nation that is America. The Boston Marathon is a celebration of the human spirit, overcoming adversity and challenges, just as the original American Patriots did in the 1770’s. Jennifer explained the race course runs through neighborhoods of seven different cities and towns before finally reaching Boston. Often people walk right out their front door on to the marathon course. “For many families, watching the Marathon on Patriots’ Day is a time-honored tradition. They set up barbecues, gather with their friends and family and make a big party of it. I always enjoy

all the cute kids who high-five the passing runners and the dogs who lie there, watching all this craziness!” A memorable moment for Jennifer was when “I passed Dick and Rick Hoyt around mile 8 (the famous father and son duo, with the father pushing his adult son in his wheelchair.)” She said, “While there was much emotion at the start and at the finish, the race in between was amazingly normal. With this being my 20th consecutive Boston Marathon, and with all the world watching Boston this year, the pre-race anxiety was definitely ramped up. But, once I crossed that start line in Hopkinton, it was just the Boston Marathon that I know and love…the same historic course, the same cheering spectators, the girls of Wellesley College with their “scream tunnel,” the challenging “Newton Hills,” the screaming crowd of students at Boston College, the Red Sox playing at Fenway Park, the giant CITGO sign marking the 1-mile to go mark, and that famous left turn onto Boylston Street with that beautiful Finish Line banner in the distance!!” Yvonne’s Perspective on First Trip to Boston Marathon My sister wanted me and my family to go to Boston to celebrate on her milestone marathon weekend. The first thing people ask me is if I felt safe and how the doubled police prescense felt. I think Boston was probably the safest place in America race weekend. Uniformed police officers were everywhere, but totally unobtrusive and friendly to

New Kiowa Hospital ribbon-cutting set for Wednesday, May 14; Annual Meeting May 22 April board meeting shows March was good month, manor costs reduced; PT getting traction table By Yvonne Miller For the very first time, Kiowa’s Hospital Board held their monthly meeting in the new hospital on the south end of Kiowa at 1002 Fourth St. This was April 23 with all members attending including: Zack Odell, Lori Schrock, Jim Parker, Robert Stark and Dan Lukins. Interim Hospital Administrator Steve Davis and Chief Financial Officer Janell Goodno also sat at the table. Several hospital department heads, staff members, Dr. Paul Wilhelm and community members also attended. They invite the public to a ribbon cutting for the new hospital next Wednesday, May 14, at 10 a.m. The ceremony will be on the west side of the new facility at the main entrance. Patrons of the hospital district are also encouraged to attend the Kiowa Hospital District’s Annual Meeting Thursday, May 22. The meeting will be held at Kiowa’s Community Building at 7 p.m. The board seats
up for reelection are currently held by Dan Lukins and Robert Stark. An election will be held for board positions at the annual meeting. The hospital district’s annual audit will be given by John Harris of BKD who is reportedly retiring. March Good Month for Hospital and Manor Goodno gave March financial data and statistics for the hospital and manor. Statistics for the clinic showed the busiest year-to-date numbers in the last three years at 1,176 for January through March. Outpatient visits for March totaling 607 were the highest so far in 2014. Physical therapy (PT) comprised 144 of those total outpatient visits. The board approved purchase of a new traction table for PT not to exceed $12,000. This money was available when Hospital Director of Nurses Heidi Courson determined a piece of surgical equipment in the budget was not needed and would not be revenue

generating for the hospital. PT is busy and this traction table will benefit many of their patients and generate revenue. In March the hospital had 51 combined days of acute and swingbed care. Radiology was busy with 55 X-rays, 12 EKGs, 13 CT scans, 3 sono/ echos, six MRIs and one DEXA scan (bone density). Lab visits totaled 254 with 3,967 tests run. Emergency room visits totaled 44. The hospital’s bottom line was $35,833 in the black for March. That’s comprised of $267,191 net patient revenue and $267,191 of total operating revenue, $384,900 total operating expenses, and a loss of $115,046. The addition of total non-operating revenue of $150,879 made the $35,833 positive figure. That was comprised of: $81,572 assessed district taxes, $17,210 of grant and tax revenue, $52,039 for the new building project from the Friends of the Hospital and Manor Foundation.

Basketball used in 1936 Olympic games for sale OVERLAND PARK, Kan. (AP) — A Kansas sports promoter is seeking a buyer for the ball used in the first Olympic gold medal basketball game, a 1936 clash in Hitler's Berlin in which the U.S. team beat Canada 19-8 in a pouring rain. The undersized, deflated orb has been in Canada ever since the wife of a player slipped it under a blanket after the game and brought home. It's now in Overland Park, Kan., where promoter Keith Zimmerman is trying to sell it for Jimmy Stewart Jr., whose father
played in the 1936 title game and kept the ball until dying in 1990. "It's an incredible piece of sports history," Zimmerman told The Kansas City Star (http://bit.ly/1o2mwWy ). The gold medal game between the U.S. and Canada was played outdoors on courts made of clay and sand. The teams played in a drizzle in the first half and a downpour in the second, with water remaining on the court and players chasing around a waterlogged ball. After the game, Jimmy Stewart's wife,

Mary, stuck the ball under a blanket she had been using to ward off the chill and brought it on the ship home to Canada. The muddy ball bore the markings of the manufacturer "Berg" on one side and "Basket-Ball" on the other. After the elder Stewart died, his son — who also played basketball for national teams — kept the ball. Stewart Jr. liked the idea of keeping the ball in Canada, but at age 75, the Windsor, Ontario, resident started trying to find a future home for it. "I wanted to pass it down in my family but there was no interest in it, so I decided to sell it," Stewart said. Stewart spoke to Rich Hughes, whose 2011 book "Netting Out Basketball 1936" details the inaugural Olympic quest. Hughes passed on the name of Zimmerman, who had a friendship with James Naismith's grandson, Ian Naismith, and was helping him find a buyer for basketball's original rules. Zimmerman is hoping the Olympic basketball can bring in six figures, and is encouraged that one of Jesse Owens' gold medals from the same Olympics sold last year for $1.4 million. In case it's not purchased, Stewart has made arrangements with the Windsor Essex County Hall of Fame, where his father was inducted in 1989. All 14 members of Canada's 1936 Olympic team were from Windsor.

camp May 27-29. Steve Gale was employed to run two sessions of drivers education – one on May 27 and the other on June 23. The tuition will be $175 per student, which will equal the cost of the program. Two certified employees turned in their resignations: Kadie Lancaster, who lives in Cherokee will be taking a job in Cherokee school, and Lynell Beierschmitt will resign to take a job in the Enid Public Schools. A non-certified employee, Julie Isenbart, is resigning as Alva Middle School secretary at the end of the school year. Parkhurst said she would like to become a paraprofessional and this was a needed step. Approval was granted by the board to both Bible Baptist Church and First Baptist Church to rent school buses for travel to church camps this summer. The board once again approved the contract for natural gas from Clearwater Enterprises for Alva High School and Alva Middle School. This saved the district about $6,600 last year. Approval was granted for Alva Middle School’s reward trip to “The Alley” (an indoor fun park) in Wichita for AR achievement. The board continued the agreement
with the Department of Rehabilitation for a school-to-work program to help integrate handicapped students into the workforce. They also approved an agreement with the Oklahoma State Board of Career and Technical Education for compliance so that the two systems can continue to cooperate. The board continued the Cooperative Education Project. Alva is the LEA for eight other schools. The service provides evaluation of kids from age 3 to age 5 on such items as hearing, vision and school readiness. Parkhurst said the federal government is changing requirements for the school lunch program that will likely result in a per-meal cost increase of 10 cents for most student. The final decision will be made in August. Also, he noted that new stiffer rules go into effect that require nutritional labeling of food sold from concession stands during school hours. This does not apply to parent-brought meals utilized for classroom parties. The district declared as surplus a 2010 Ford Excursion that will be traded in for a Suburban-type vehicle that holds more passengers. The following non-certified em-
ployees were rehired: JoAnn Isenbart, Terri Owen, Becky Pingelton, Louis Zwiefelhofer, Clint Harzman, Terry Smithey, Patricia Gluth, Richard Anderson, Janet Sheik, April Gravels, Ruth Zwiefelhofer, Jeffery Easter, Machelle Hooper, Ted Shafer, Richard Burton, Tony Ismael and Mark Carroll. The board ended their meeting by going into executive session to discuss the AEA Win-Win negotiations.

Hospital
Year to date, the hospital is in the red by $184,553. Showing the hospital operating statement, Goodno said a large part of the loss is on paper due to contractual adjustments (mainly Medicare) that totals $198,926 at this point. Goodno said the district still has $336,000 due from Medicare and uncollected taxes of $475,117. Goodno said they continue to do bad debt maintenance. Total net patient accounts receivable totaled $523,235 at the end of March. The manor was in the red $6,203 in March, which is a lower loss than usual. Interim Manor Administrator
Carla Dunigan said proudly she had reduced costly agency nursing care significantly – from $21,193 in February to $1,797 in March. The resident census the night of the board meeting was 24. “I’m headed to zero,” Dunigan said of agency nursing. She presented other cost saving measures she’s implemented to the board. Since the board meeting, last Thursday night a furnace motor burned up at the manor. Dunigan said they called the fire department as a precaution. She said the residents were not affected in any way in the minor incident. $162,000 Still Needed by Foundation Interim Chief Executive Officer Davis gave reports on the payout schedule to MW Builders for the new hospital. They’ll be paid in full when a few issues are resolved. One of those was confusing signage for access to the ER. Davis complimented many individual employees who helped make the move to the new facility go so well and for reducing labor costs. He mentioned Rory Reed, who is
head of maintenance, for working so hard. At the board meeting, Goodno announced the foundation still needed $168,400 for the new hospital project. As of this Tuesday, that amount reduced to $162,000, Goodno confirmed. Davis updated the board on the search for an administrator. They’ve found a few possible candidates – one who ran Wesley and in retirement has served at other small hospitals. In other business, the board approved: a CT40 scrubber (floor cleaner) from Williams Janitorial, not to exceed $6,300; a Nextgen upgrade, MU2. More research is ongoing for a new mower/snow remover; and a pest control contract. Med staff appointments were approved for: Mark Hueftle, M.D., and Delphia Clarke, MD. Stark mentioned hospital ground at the east edge of what they own by the new hospital that may be sold. The board agreed to discuss in executive session, but reportedly took no action on return to open session. Following executive session, the board approved $7,000 for physician recruitment.

My name is JEREMY BAYS. I am a candidate for DISTRICT JUDGE, 4th Judicial District, which serves Woods, Alfalfa, Major, Dewey and Woodward Counties in Northwestern Oklahoma. I want to introduce myself to those of you who may not know me. I grew up in northwestern Oklahoma, Alva, to be specic. I am a graduate of Alva High School, Northwestern Oklahoma State University and Oklahoma City University Law School, earning a Juris Doctorate degree in 2000. My family has lived in Northwest Oklahoma most all of their lives. I, together with my wife, Holly, and children Logan, Harper and Theodore, live on my Grandparent's farm just southwest of Dacoma. I have lived there as a farmer-rancher since 1990. We raise wheat, alfalfa, and cattle in Woods, Alfalfa and Beaver Counties. When not driving a tractor or chasing livestock, I practice law with my Father, Larry Bays, in Alva, and have since 2000, thereby obtaining some 14 years experience in the legal profession all over Oklahoma. I am a member of the Woods County Bar Association, the Oklahoma Bar Association and have served as the City Judge of Waynoka for 10 plus years. I also have served on the Dacoma Fire Department for more than 19 years as a volunteer reman. My family also enjoys helping with the Dacoma “3rd of July” celebration each year in Dacoma. I have legal representation experience in all areas of the law...criminal, civil, divorce, oil and gas, tax protests, contracts, and litigation. I have practiced before Judges and Courts all over Oklahoma, from Texas County in the west to Payne County in the east. I have appeared in complicated Court systems such as Oklahoma County as well as rural Courts like the ve counties within this District. I know no fear and am not bashful when urging my client's position in any Court of the land. I ask for your vote to be District Judge because I, and my entire family, have a vested interest in northwest Oklahoma, as both citizens and property owners. When elected District Judge, I promise to pursue a fair and impartial legal system in this District to protect the rights of all people who reside within, or even visit, the Counties incorporated into the 4th Judicial District of Oklahoma. I believe that I have earned a reputation among both my peers and my friends for honesty and fairness, as well as being straight-forward in my practice before the Judges, Court Clerks, fellow Lawyers, and my clients. I promise to pay attention to each and every one of your concerns when elected. I will be available to discuss any issue that may arise during my tenure as District Judge at all times.

Car with dead body inside owned by missing Wichita man MAIZE, Kan. (AP) — Police say a car found with a decomposing body inside belonged to a Wichita man missing since February. The car was found Monday morning at the Fieldhouse Apartments in Maize after police were called to investigate a bad smell. McPherson police said Monday the car belonged to Adam Sabri, 54, who co-owns a sports bar in McPherson. The body has not been positively identified because it was badly decomposed. Residents of the apartment complex said they had noticed the car sit-
ting in the same spot for months but the tint on the windows was so dark that they could not see inside. They began noticing a strong odor from the car as temperatures hit 100 degrees in recent days. Maize Police Chief Matt Jensby said Monday afternoon that officers found the car locked but saw the body in the back seat. He said the body, which was clothed, apparently was decomposing for weeks or months. On Monday afternoon, the McPherson Police Department said the car belonged to Sabri, who has been missing

from Wichita since Feb. 9. He was the owner of the Timeout Sports Bar and Grill in McPherson. He owned a white 2008 Saturn Aura. Jensby said the car found in the apartment is a white, four-door Saturn with a Sedgwick County license tag. "It's been very creepy knowing that there has been a dead body so close to my children," resident Stephanie Avants told KAKE-TV (http://bit.ly/ 1o2gyoI ). "I usually park beside of it almost every day. I just thought it was inoperable." The car was towed from the apartment complex Monday evening.

Marathon
the crowd. Equally comforting was the fact that you knew for every officer in uniform there was an undercover policeman. They checked out my purse and tagged it. Streets near the race route were blocked and you had to pass by police to access the barricade-lined route. Watching the 5K Race on Saturday and the marathon on Monday found the streets lined with cheering spectators who were as excited as a hometown crowd at one of our small town ballgames in the final seconds when the score is tied. “You’ve got this!” “Go, go, go!” “U.S.A., U.S.A.” chants and other cheers of encouragement erupted from the barricade-lined streets. Standing a few blocks from the finish line, you saw every type of runner who had almost finished the 26.2 miles – those continuing their steady pace as my sister did– some giving a high-five to spectators-- others about to collapse and literally carried by fellow runners. It was amazing to see the selflessness of runners who stopped to help others whose physical endurance was just gone. One young female runner I saw staggered aimlessly and was apparently delirious as
others runners steadied her before an official race ATV zoomed up to take her for medical attention. When three men who had lost their legs in last year’s bombing came walking down Boylston Street with their blades on, arms locked and carrying an American flag, the crowd was the loudest I heard all day. That moment epitomized Boston Strong. I read accounts of some of the marathon runners. One was a reporter, Marty Smith, who writes for ESPN. Not ever a runner, he felt compelled to train and run the Boston Marathon for all those who could not and wrote about his perspective which included a day of joy and tears. In a humorous part of Smith’s story he told the well-known routine for many Bostonians on race day, “It’s First Beer at 9 and First Wave (of runners) at 10 and First Pitch (for the Boston Red Sox at Fenway Park) at 11.” My teenage daughter Elizabeth and her friend Kiera Yates ran the 5K with Aunt Jennifer and Uncle Rick and received medals. Our family was ecstatic that Elizabeth ran the whole race (unlike her usual walking most of Kiowa’s 5K
Race on Labor Day). Elizabeth said there was no way she couldn’t run it with all the loud cheers of encouragement from spectators and even other runners. Jennifer said, “My training this winter was more intense and focused than it’s ever been. I wanted to make certain that I left nothing to chance and that I gave myself the best possible chance to have the best race I possibly could. I felt strong and controlled throughout the race. While I had some discomfort early in the race in my left hamstring, I just blocked it out, took an ibuprofen and focused on what a great race I was having. It is incredibly fun and rewarding to make it through the Newton Hills, which end around mile 20.5, then blast down that hill by Boston College with the loudest fans along the course! I finished very strong, except for some calf cramping in the final mile. Crossing that Boston Marathon Finish Line for the 20th consecutive year was a moment I will never forget. So happy that my family was able to come along this year and share in the joy and excitement that is Patriots’ Day in Boston. Looking forward to #21 on April 20, 2015….”
Now a 20-year Boston Marathon finisher, Jennifer Schubert-Akin runs Boston’s 5K race with her niece Elizabeth Miller (right) and friend Kiera Yates, both from Kiowa, Kan. Both teens ran the entire race.

BJCC
would just shake it off and step up. After about five or six hours of them piling dirt on his back, the mule was able to step triumphantly over the edge of the well and walk out into freedom, all because he chose to shake it off and step up. “So graduates remember this. Sometimes in life, someone is going to throw dirt at you. Sometimes in life, you may fall and stumble into a well. “I’m going to tell you that the outcome when those events occur will be your response to it. You have a decision to make! You can get angry and think life is not fair; you can blame somebody else, or you can choose to shake it off and step up,” said Steele. He turned to the graduates and said, “I’m thinking that by the fact you are here today, you have already chosen that route in life. You’ve stepped up, and are shaking the dirt off. “So even though you had adversity along the way, you have chosen properly and that fruit of that is showing today with this graduation as you step forward in life.”
Ceremony Conclusion Others speaking at the graduation ceremony were Michael Culbreath, the BJCC chaplain who worded an invocation; Warden Janice Melton, who welcomed the visitors and who also introduced members of the local BJCC Advisory Board in attendance: Ed Sutter and Teresa and Lynn Martin. At the conclusion of the event, Superintendent Pam Humphrey offered her encouragement to the graduates. Site Supervisor Greg Lyon introduced honor students Anthony Fraser, Caleb McCabe and William Corliss, who made brief remarks. He also introduced faculty members Susan Schrock, Shirlene Oakes, LaNita Brewer, Barbra Davis, Connie Anton and Tonya Weinhoffer. Bibles were presented to each graduate as a gift from the First Presbyterian Church of Alva. As the graduates made their way through the line, the diplomas were handed out by Pam Humphrey, superintendent of education for the Oklahoma Department of Corrections; Steele and Melton.
