South Barber doubles tennis team places 8th at state By Yvonne Miller The South Barber High School doubles tennis team of juniors Grant Cantrell and Spencer Kimmell qualified for the state tennis tournament where they took eighth place out of 22 teams. The state tournament was held Friday at Wichita. The previous Saturday South Barber High School in Kiowa, Kansas, hosted the Kansas Class 3-2-1A Regional Tennis Tournament. Cantrell and Kimmell and singles player Tanner Cloyd qualified for state. Although Cloyd did not place at state, as a team South Barber placed 13th. At state Cantrell and Kimmell won two matches and then fell to the team from Hesston, which won the tournament. Cantrell and Kimmell won third place at Regionals in doubles. The duo entered competition with a 15-8 record. They won their first match 6-1, 6-2. In the next round they overcame Wichita Independent 6-4, 6-3. In their final round of competition, Cantrell/Kimmell team fell to a Conway Springs duo, 6-2, 6-0, that went on to win the regional title. Junior Tanner Cloyd placed sixth at regionals. Entering with a 11-9 record, Cloyd won his first round 6-1, 6-4. He lost the next round to Wichita Independent 7-5, 6-2. The SBHS tennis coach is Jeff Lantz who taught and coached his final season at South Barber.

Lynn Says
Why God made moms (A bit late, but perfect for Mother’s Day. Lynn L. Martin) Answers given by second-grade school children to the following questions: Why did God make mothers? 1. She’s the only one who knows where the scotch tape is. 2. Mostly to clean the house. 3. To help us out of there when we were getting born. How did God make mothers? 1. He used dirt, just like for the rest of us. 2. Magic plus super powers and a lot of stirring. 3. God made my mom just the same like he made me. He just used bigger parts. What ingredients are mothers made of? 1. God makes mothers out of clouds and angel hair and everything nice in the world and one dab of mean. 2. They had to get their start from men’s bones. Then they mostly use string, I think. Why did God give you your mother and not some other mom? 1. We’re related. 2. God knew she likes me a lot
more than other people’s moms like me. What kind of a little girl was your mom? 1. My mom has always been my mom and none of that other stuff. 2. I don’t know because I wasn’t there, but my guess would be pretty bossy. 3. They say she used to be nice. What did Mom need to know about Dad before she married him? 1. His last name. 2. She had to know his background. Like is he a crook? Does he get drunk on beer? 3. Does he make at least $800 a year? Did he say NO to drugs and YES to chores? Why did your mom marry your dad? 1. My dad makes the best spaghetti in the world. And my mom eats a lot. 2. She got too old to do anything else with him. 3. My grandma says that Mom didn’t have her thinking cap on. Who’s the boss at your house? 1. Mom doesn’t want to be boss, but she has to because Dad’s such a goof ball. 2. Mom. You can tell by room inspection. She sees the stuff under the bed. 3. I guess Mom is, but only because she has a lot more to do than Dad.
What’s the difference between moms and dads? 1. Moms work at work and work at home and Dads just go to work at work. 2. Moms know how to talk to teachers without scaring them. 3. Dads are taller and stronger, but moms have all the real power ‘cause that’s who you got to ask if you want to sleep over at your friend’s. 4. Moms have magic, they make you feel better without medicine. What does your mom do in her spare time? 1. Mothers don’t do spare time. 2. To hear her tell it, she pays bills all day long. What would it take to make your mom perfect? 1. On the inside she’s already perfect. Outside, I think some kind of plastic surgery. 2. Diet. You know, her hair. I’d diet, maybe blue. If you could change one thing about your mom, what would it be? 1. She has this weird thing about me keeping my room clean. I’d get rid of that. 2. I’d make my mom smarter. Then she would know it was my sister who did it not me. 3. I would like for her to get rid of those invisible eyes on the back of her head.

in a one-vehicle wreck near Fairview Friday, May 13. The incident occurred at 5:16 p.m. 4 miles east and 1 and 2/10ths miles south of Fairview in Major County. The female driver from Isabella, whose name was withheld due to her age, was driving a 2005 Nissan Titan pickup south on a county road when the vehicle departed the roadway to the right after the driver lost control. The vehicle rolled one and a quarter times, landing on the passenger side. The driver was ejected 21 feet south and 17 feet east of where the pickup
came to rest. The driver was taken by Fairview EMS to the Fairview Hospital and later transported to St. Mary’s Hospital in Enid where she was admitted with head injuries. According to the highway patrol report, the cause of the wreck was unsafe speed for the type of roadway. The driver was not wearing a seatbelt. Trooper Brock Morgan investigated, assisted by Major County Sheriff’s Office, Fairview Fire Department and Major County EMS.

Burlington School Board looks at transportation bond, rehires personnel BHS Graduation Thursday at 7 p.m. By Yvonne Miller The Burlington Board of Education met for their May meeting Monday evening, conducting business in approximately two and a half hours. Board President Terry Graham called the meeting to order with the following members present: Allison Armbruster, Aaron Smith and Robert Hill. Member T.J. Rockenbach was absent. Others attending included Superintendent Glen Elliott, Principal Shane Feely and Minutes Clerk Tamre McGinnis. The board held a special meeting May 9 for the purpose of interviewing and discussing a potential candidate to coach boys basketball. The executive session lasted approximately an hour and a half. No action was taken except to have Superintendent Elliott continue the search. The board is taking action toward a bond issue for transportation. Elliott said the money is needed to purchase a bus with a handicap lift, a new Suburban and also a 14-passenger bus that would be used for trips when a Suburban is too small and a full-size bus is too big. Matt Reichert, a representative from Stephen H. McDonald & Associates Inc. was invited by the board to discuss the bond issue. He presented information on the issuance of general
obligation bonds. The board voted to employ Stephen H. McDonald & Associates as financial consultant to the school district. The board then discussed, read aloud and approved a resolution authorizing and calling for a special election on Aug. 23. This is to authorize the issuance of general obligations bond. The board held an approximately 30-minute executive session for the purpose of discussing re-employment of non-certified personnel. Upon return to open session the board rehired Tamre McGinnis, Brenda Stricker, Fawnda Martin, Neal Gordon, Max Boothby, Dale Duggins, Ginger Cass, Cheryl Czerniak, David Cass and Kathy Motycka (inadvertently left off the list on the agenda). The board also voted to employ Konya Martin for speech language pathology services for the 2016/2017 school year. The 2015 district profile report was discussed. Elliott said the district’s free and reduced lunch percentage reduced down to 38 percent. The school was over 50 percent, he said. The school is pleased to have a zero dropout rate. Encumbrances, change orders and warrants were approved as follows: • General Fund: encumbrances $34,531.87, change orders $1,259.95, warrants $422,966.96 • Building Fund: warrants $134.29 • Child Nutrition Fund:
encumbrances $2,781.00, warrants $4,509.92 Items receiving board approval were: the contract with Alcohol & Drug Testing Inc. for the 2016-2017 school year; the temporary appropriations at 75 percent for the 2016-2017 General Fund of $3,466,110.39, Building Fund of $436,754.25, Child Nutrition Fund of $43,669.98; to offer student insurance again through Student Resources for the 2016-2017 school year; the 2016-2017 technology plan; the April Activity Fund report. Unused personal days were reviewed. Since the real property previously discussed was no longer available an executive session was not convened and no action was taken. The board offered an extended school year summer program to a current student. School board ethics forms have been completed and are on file. Members Graham and Hill spoke briefly regarding the two conferences they attended: The New Board Member and The Effective Board. Elliott’s superintendent’s report included a reminder of the upcoming OSSBA/CCOSA conference in August, school property and liability insurance, and current legislation. Feely’s principal’s report included the eighth-grade graduation held last night with 2012 BHS graduate and recent OSU graduate William Maltbie as the speaker. High school graduation is this Thursday. The honors program is Friday. School finishes Friday with classes dismissed at 1 p.m. The school year ended with enrollment at 131 for elementary and 40 for high school.

Jim Scribner impressed with the tele-hospitalist service at Share Medical Center. At 5 am one morning last week, Jim Scribner awakened his wife Cleo and said, “I can barely breathe.” She said, “We’d better get to the hospital.” Jim was scared and felt it was a critical situation and thought about taking a trip to a larger hospital in Enid but didn’t want to call an ambulance to leave town. He also worried he wouldn’t live that long to make it to Enid. So they chose the Share Medical Center Emergency Room staffed by Dr. Ott. He guessed it was COPD that is talked about on TV (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease). “He wanted to keep me in the hospital overnight and get me set up with a breathing machine. Later in the day, they brought in the two-screen TV, and Dr. Robert Rader was the tele-doctor. “He sorta has an ‘in’ with me. His dad, Don Rader, is just a couple years older than I am, and his granddad, Buzz Rader, used to work with my dad and also drove the school bus. I knew this kid (Dr. Rader) as he grew up. It was comfortable seeing such a familiar face. Jim Scribner ran for the vacant Alva City Marshall seat 12 years ago as a lark. The City Marshall has no real authority and is paid $1.00 per year. The print shop at the newspaper created this humourous poster with the two bill cap and toy cork pop gun as a prop. Two press runs of the poster sold out. Since then, Jim has written a weekly column, “Junkman’s Gems,” a somewhat redneck take on events in Alva, and is one of the most popular in the Alva Review-Courier.
580-327-2800
The SMC Emergency Room is open 24/7.
“They did a lot of tests! Two chest x-rays, MRI of my lungs, and a echocardiogram of my heart. When they did the MRI, Dr. Rader spotted a mass on top of my liver, but he said don't lose any sleep over it. He thought it was a group of tangled blood vessels. The lady came back and did a scan on it, and it turned out to be exactly what he said. I saw him on the TV set-up Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday mornings. He said I didn't need oxygen but some asthma medicine. “When you first think of the machine that it might not be as personal, I will say Dr. Rader has the perfect demeanor. He honestly looks like he was born to be on a TV screen checking out a hospital. “I think the tele-medicine is a very good thing. I don't how many patients he saw in Alva that day. I think I heard them say, ‘three.’ They roll that machine in, he sits at his desk, he studies whatever tests or images they've provided, and looks at you for five or ten minutes with the help of a nurse who places instruments around on you. After that, he moves on to the next patient perhaps at a different hospital. Instead of a doctor driving around, having to walk the halls, he probably can see fifty people a day instead of 15. Since he's associated with a large hospital, it may eliminate one or two steps in the food chain to get the help you need, since he has several specialists in the same building with him. I don't know how many hospitals this is being done in the United States yet, but this is a great plan to help cover our nation's shortage of doctors. “By the way, the food was great. I chose chicken-fried steak from a menu and had I not been in a hospital room, I would have thought I was eating at the Bowling Alley.”

Longtime South Barber band instructor and librarian , Jill Daughhetee (right) recognizes retiring educators before the elementary spring music program begins. “These ladies combined have over 80 years experience in education,” she said of teacher Jeanne Albright (left) and Principal Marcia Cantrell. Photo by Yvonne Miller
By Yvonne Miller Just when the crowd thought the South Barber Elementary School Spring Program concluded Monday night, vocal teacher Boram Shin said the children had a surprise for Principal Marcia Cantrell and teacher Jeanne Albright, both of whom are retiring at the end of this school year. The video featured elementary students giving one word descriptions of their teacher and principal that were both funny and touching. They also told what they would miss most about those women, and even got to do their best impression of the teacher and principal. It was difficult to hear what each child said as many times the crowd was laughing so hard from the previous comment. The tissues came out when the fourth, fifth and sixth graders sang “You Raise Me Up” by Josh Groban. At the conclusion, Cantrell took the mic, and with emotion said, “This is what it’s all about.” She turned to the edge of the stage full of children with outstretched arms. The children surrounded their principal and gave her endless hugs. Undoubtedly the best gift they could give her.

City of Kiowa discusses electric issues, makes annual appointments, purchase By Yvonne Miller Kiowa’s City Council met for their May meeting last Tuesday night. Mayor Brandon Farney arrived late to the meeting as he attended the high school music program that was the same evening. In Farney’s absence Councilmember Bill Watson conducted the meeting until the mayor’s arrival. All other council members attended the meeting, including R.L. Simpson, Russell Molz, Tom Wells and Brian Hill. City Administrator Lou Leone was also present along with City Clerk Marlo Rugg and attorney Laurel McClellan. In his administrator’s report to council, Leone said the Kansas Municipal Energy Agency (KMEA) notified staff that there has been an error in what Kiowa has been charged for electric. He said the charge in error is on transmission. Leone explained the Western Farmers Electric Cooperative (WFEC) originally submitted to the Southwest Power Pool (SPP) an estimate of Kiowa’s usage as much higher than it actually is. The estimate had Kiowa as a 5.3 mega watt user when they are only a 2.0, Leone said. This error had Kiowa paying $14,000 per month when they should be paying approximately $6,000 per month, the administrator. Correcting the error will save the City of Kiowa approximately $8,000 per month. This overcharge has occurred since Kiowa started membership in the SPP in January of this year. This has cost the City of Kiowa about $40,000. Leone said WFEC is working with SPP to resolve the problem. He said
the estimated $40,000 will be refunded over a period of time back to the city. Leone specified this refund is on the city side. This does not affect Kiowa electric consumers. In a separate electric issue, since the City of Kiowa is no longer affiliated with Alfalfa Electric Cooperative (AEC) in Cherokee, Kiowa will receive their capital credits. Leone said that total is $56,652.24. The city staff will monitor all capital credits due to the city, he said. The payout includes Kiowa’s portion of their purchases from 1996-97 and for 2015. More City of Kiowa Business At the end of the meeting, the council held two executive sessions lasting a total of nearly 40 minutes. Leone said legal issues were discussed with no action taken upon return to open session. It was time for annual renewal of the city’s insurance, including property, liability, vehicles, worker’s compensation, etc. The cost is less than a one percent increase – 0.893 percent, Leone said. The cost is $53,998, which the council approved. Leone noted this amount includes the cost of adding two journeymen to the city staff. An agenda item regarded an annual contribution to Barber County Economic Development. In 2012 the cities of Barber County decided to pool their resources into one organization. Kiowa contributed $12,000 in 2012 and $15,000 each year since 2013. Kiowa’s total investment to date is $57,500. Council members said they haven’t seen a return on their investment.
Therefore, the council voted to reduce their contribution to $1,500 this year and revisit it in 2017. Leone said the remaining $13,500 will be set aside for economic activities developed by the city staff. Purchase of equipment was discussed at length by council members. The city needs to replace a 1972 John Deere grader, 1994 forklift and 1973 dump truck. A 2000 model dump truck for $31,000 received the council’s vote to purchase. The purchase is from Steffen Equipment in Sioux City, Iowa. Leone said the council decided to pass on the grader. Before purchasing a skid steer, the council directed Leone to research further. Then they’ll hold a special executive session meeting to review the information. Mayor Farney appointed and the council approved the following annual appointments: Municipal Judge Rich Befort, Chief of Police Steven Johnson, City Clerk Marlo Rugg, City Attorney Laurel McClellan, Treasurer Rex Zimmerman. Leone updated council members on a variety other subjects in his administrator’s report. The City of Attica told Leone they’ll sign the service pool agreement. A smoke test in the sewer identified leaks near three businesses. Leone said those business owners were notified and it is the responsibility of the business owner to get their part repaired. The administrator is working on the 2017 budget and hopes to have a draft by the June meeting. In an effort to cut costs, Leone said he’s negotiated with Verizon. The instant savings are $25/month or $300/year on the administrator’s phone. Leone said the Kiowa Fire Department wants to thank those who helped purchased “much-needed” new radios. They are the Molz family, The General Store and the First State Bank. The administrator said he did a walk-through with the Kiowa Fire Department to review future equipment purchases/sales and ways to fund new vehicles.

Man arrested for trespassing on prison property By Marione Martin A man from Geary was arrested for trespassing on prison property at Helena. Michael Cliffton Sankey, 21, of Gary has been charged with a felony of bringing contraband into a penal institution. He was also charged with a misdemeanor of trespass after being forbidden. The felony is punishable by imprisonment in the state penitentiary for one to five years or a fine of $100 to $1,000 or both fine and imprisonment. According to court records, on Friday, May 13, about 8:49 a.m. Helena Police Chief Jim Dykes received a call from James Crabtree Correctional Center that a pewter color four-door pickup bearing a Cheyenne and Arapaho tribe Oklahoma tag had been seen driving by the prison several times. They then caught an American Indian male, Sankey, in the wheat field just to the west edge of the prison. From him they recovered a backpack containing cell phones and marijuana. Chief Dykes arrested Sankey and took him to the Alfalfa County Jail.

By Yvonne Miller Sunday afternoon 13 students comprising the Class of 2016 were the 43rd class to graduate from South Barber High School in Kiowa, Kansas. Principal Brent Shaffer welcomed the crowd full of the graduates’ family and friends and said this is the first class he has had all four years, so they are special to him. He told them to fight for their dream. He asked longtime teacher Veda Holt to stand and be recognized for her dedication to education. She is retiring after 50 years of teaching. The crowd thanked her with applause. Class President and salutatorian of the
Class of 2016 Anastasia Wilhelm gave her address about “the legend of 2016 senior class.” She cleverly wove the names and personalities of her classmates into her story. With wit and subtle humor, she compared her class to characters from King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table, the Avengers, the Hunger Games, High School Musical and even ScoobyDoo. When referring to “High School Musical,” Wilhelm said no one in her class dances or smiles nearly as well as Cameron Diel. As she concluded, Wilhelm said the Class of 2016 could not be put in a box.
“We are unique, we are our own, we are Chieftains with a story that has never been told before, and will never be told again.” While she mentioned all the uncertainties in life, Wilhelm said, “I am certain of one thing. The Class of 2016 is

Community House Shower for the Hofen's
March 23, 2016, the Anderson Creek Wildre destroyed the home of Brad and Ruchita Hofen and their two daughters, Cassia and Candace. They live northwest of Alva for part of the year when not ministering in India, where Brad teaches in various Bible Schools and holds large Gospel Meetings. It was heart breaking to them when they received the call that their home and all contents and personal belongings were totally destroyed by the ravaging wildre. Our heroic, dedicated remen tried their best to prevent this destruction, but strong winds prevented their efforts to save the home. Our Community would like to bless them with a Come and Go Shower held at the The Extreme, 425 College Avenue in Alva, on May 22, from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. Since everything was destroyed by the re, including their home, the hostesses suggest gift cards, gift certicates, or cash gifts as the most practical for the Hofen's at this point in time. However, if you chose to give a gift item they will be able to store the items until they rebuild. All will be greatly appreciated! If unable to come on Sunday, May 22, then Monday 16 through Friday, May 20 items can be left at the McDermott and Associates building located at 526 Flynn in Alva or with Kathie Wessels at 1308 S. Pennsylvania in Cherokee. If you have any questions, please call the Hostesses: Jane McDermott 580-327-3500, Kathie Wessels 580-596-2012, Kathy Churchill 580-327-3054 or Sheri Bushman 580-435-2409.

South Barber Band Director Jill Daughhetee always has fun with her students during their performances. As the band plays some of their favorite pepbBand music at the Spring Music Concert, the usually zany director dances with members of her percussion section – Idallis Shaffer, who cracks up, and Sabrina Hughbanks, who tries to keep playing. Both the junior high and high school bands sounded so fantastic – for those of you as old as this reporter – as in the days of Cort McClaren. Photo by Yvonne Miller

Life to a Game Class Valedictorian Nicole Blick gave her address, comparing life to a game. An athlete, Blick said, “While life didn’t give me a manual, basketball has given me teammates, opponents, coaches, fans, timeouts and championships to help me create my own manual. Although in life these terms are not the same, they do have similarities.” Discussing teamwork, Blick quoted Vince Lombardi who said, “Individual commitment to a group effort – that’s what makes a team work, a company work, a society work, a civilization work.” Speaking of opponents, she said, “Never stop pushing to make yourself better.” She then quoted Ed Macauley,”When you are not practicing, remember, someone somewhere is practicing and when you meet him he will win.” She said the most important coaches
her classmates will ever have are their parents. “They are there for us from day one, always willing to teach us and show us right from wrong. They set rules and guidelines for us, demonstrate or explain how to follow those rules, and show us that our actions have consequences, both good and bad.” “Classmates, look around this gym. This is your fan section,” she said. Quoting Karen Kain, she said, “Surround yourself with people who provide you with support and love and remember to give back as much as you can in return.” Blick wished her classmates a lifetime full of championships. Adding to the commencement was a quartet of sophomore Joseph Bowden and three graduates, Reiley Courson, Caitlin Jacobs and Ammorae Williams. With voices as smooth as butter, they beautifully sang “You Raise Me Up.”
