Waynoka FCCLA hosts Back to School Bash The 2014-2015 school year is well underway. Some students are very excited and others not so much, but Waynoka’s FCCLA chapter is very excited about the year. The group kicked the school year off with a Back-to-School Bash on Aug. 19 at the city pool, which 58 students attended. All students in grades eight to 12

were invited. Mr. Poe cooked hamburgers and hot dogs. Amy Ferguson and Linda Drake furnished delicious cookies and homemade ice cream. The students had a great time visiting with each other and discussing membership. Membership is open for students in grades eight through 12. Dues are $30

and should be paid by Sept. 15. This money pays for national, state and local memberships, attendance at the North 1 District Leadership meeting, and a chapter t-shirt. The Waynoka FCCLA chapter has exciting things planned and encourages eligible students to join them.

Students attending the Waynoka FCCLA Back To School Bash were: (front row, left to right) McKayla Holson, Tara Hanes, Bonnie Riley, Jennifer Edwards, Derik Miller, JP Smiley, Katie Blair, Kynadi Gaskill, Alex Soliz, Kolten Childers, Bailey Rankin, Logan Walker, Mary Shklar, Jalin Willyard, Dylan McGuire, Ashley Bowen, Nick Castillo, Elizabeth Maldonado, Price Poe, Trey Green, Brooklinn Weber, Precious Ramos, and Sam Meek; (middle row) Alexus Hoy, Laura Blair, Destiny Bodenbach, Savannah McLaughlin, Nathan Pitts, Logan Meriwether, Lupita Vargas, Kellen Allison, Kate Gosney, Tatum Rose, Kelsey Hull, Crystal Montano, Faith Kincade, Melissa Starks, Nathan Castillo, Willy Starks, and Austin Durkee; (back row) Gabe Delgado, Colton Budy, Tanner Selvey, Josiah Darr, Kevin Hoy, Brandon Green, Jake Adair, Bailey Goucher, Andrew Miller, Draven Smith, Madison Truesdale, Logan Haltom, Colton Reuss, Josh Castillo, Sarah Stinson and CJ Castillo The Alva Review-Courier / Newsgram is published Wednesday by Martin Broadcasting Corp. 620 Choctaw St. Alva, Oklahoma 73717 Lynn L. Lynn Says

Five things you didn’t know your phone could do By Lynn L. Martin (The following has been condensed from an article by Kim Komando.) If you’re like me, you’ve never read the manual that came with your phone. Then some little kid comes along and shows you up by doing something awesome with his phone that you didn’t know could be done. 1. Take a screen shot! Have you ever wanted to capture something on your phone’s screen? Maybe it’s a hilarious text from a friend or a marriage proposal. iPhone: Press and hold the Home button along with the Sleep/Wake button. You should hear a shutter click. The image will appear in your camera roll or saved photos. On an Android, press and hold the Power and Volume down buttons at the same time. The image should be captured to your gallery. 2. Block calls and texts. iPhone: If the person is already a contact, tap his name, scroll to the bottom of the page and tap Block this Caller. Then tap Block Contact. On an Android phone: Fo to Settings > Call settings > Call block. Under incoming calls tap Call Block List and then tap Create. You can enter a number or tap the picture icon to find the number in your contacts list or call log.

THE GENERAL STORE

CLOTHING SALES $1 SACK SALE Aug. 28-Sept. 6 - Closed Sept 8 M, Tues, Wed & Fri 10am-4:30pm Thurs 4:30-8pm • Sat 9am-12 Noon 1125 E. Main - Kiowa, KS • 620-825-4924

3. Use a real password: Both iPhone and Android default to a four-digit PIN for unlocking the phone. That’s OK so long as you don’t use something simple like 0000 or 1234. If you want more security, iPhone: Go to Settings > Passcode. From there, swipe off the option that says Simple Passcode. Here, you can set your passcode with letters and special characters for better phone security. Android: Go to Settings > Lock Screen and tap Screen Lock. You can set the level of security you want from a simple swipe to a password. Select Password and type in the password that you want. It should be a mix of letters, numbers and special characters. 4. See text more clearly. If you have a hard time reading things on your phone’s tiny screen, bump up the font size. iPhone: Settings > General > Accessibility and turn on Bold Text and Larger Text. You will need to restart your phone for this to take effect. Android: Go to Settings>Accessibility. Under Vision, tap Font size and set it to large. Some phones include a Huge option. 5. Read things out loud. If you want to keep your eyes off the phone’s screen, have it read things to you out loud. iPhone: Go to Settings > General > Accessibility and turn on Voice Over. You have the option to practice with Voice Over and set the speaking rate and more. Android: Go to Settings > Accessibility and tap Talk Back. If you don’t see it, download it from the Google Play store. Turn it on and your phone will read whatever you touch on the screen and incoming notifications. Hint: To perform a regular swipe gesture, you have to use two fingers instead of one. To adjust your Talk Back settings, go to Settings > Accessibility and tap Text-to-Speech options. You can adjust voice engine and speed rate. Then go to Settings and turn on HandsFree mode. This will tell you who is calling or messaging.

LABOR DAY “BEANERS” REMEMBER MONTY WILLIAMS – Helping with Kiowa’s Labor Day festivities has always been a tradition for the Monty Williams family. This year is a difficult one with Monty’s sudden death in August. A longtime “beaner” (the guys who work hard, but have just as much fun preparing the free ham and bean dinner in the park), Monty always put on his beaner apron and was an integral part of the process. In his memory, Monty’s apron hung on a tree where the “beaners” were in action – including his son Casey, who carries on the tradition. Monty’s daughter Shelby and widow Cindra serve ham and beans as always, but with heavy hearts, as were felt by the entire crew. Photo by Yvonne Miller

MARY JUNE TERWORT’S 90TH BIRTHDAY – Talk about not looking your age! It’s hard to believe lifelong Kiowa woman Mary June Terwort is having a 90th birthday. Her family honored her with a surprise birthday party at Kiowa’s 75th Labor Day celebration in the park, complete with cake and flowers. Mary June holds her gift – her first great-great-grandchild. He is Eli James, the almost three-month-old son of her great-granddaughter Lauren Yauk of Buffalo. Seated in her tent-covered birthday booth, Mary June is surrounded by her daughters: (front, left to right) Kristi Molz and Laurie Hiltner, both of Kiowa; (back) . . . more Labor Day Carolyn Robertson and Judy Shafer. Local student returns from summer in Japan Andrew Miller, a senior at Waynoka High School, recently returned from a six-week stay in Nerima-ku Tokyo, Japan, where he lived with a Japanese family. Miller was one of 14 members of Family, Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) chosen as a recipient of the 2014 Japanese Exchange Scholarship. Since 1979, Kikkoman Corporation of Japan has funded this program. In cooperation with Youth For Understanding USA, FCCLA and Kikkoman Corporation encourage individual and group involvement in helping achieve global cooperation and harmony. Together they provide this scholarship opportunity for FCCLA members. “I was in Japan from June 12 to July 22. This was the experience of a lifetime,” said Miller. “The best thing I did while I was in Japan was attend a Japanese BBQ with all of my friends. The Japanese BBQ is very different from the way we do it here in Oklahoma. In Japan you have to make reservations at an outside restaurant and they give you two hours to be there. The

waiters bring you all of the food, but it’s raw. You cook the food on the skillets that are on the tables. The food that we had was beef, pork, lamb and soba. This was a very fun thing to do. I did this my first week in Japan, so it was a really good way to get to know all of the people I was going to be around. “Another one of my favorite things in Japan was getting to go to Hakone with my host family. Hakone is a prefecture that is right by Mt. Fuji. You can see the amazing mountain from your hotel window. While we were there we went to the zoo and we also got to go on a sky lift. This really helped me to bond with my host family. Without my host family none of this would have been possible. They are amazing. I had a host mother, a host father, and one host brother. I could not have imagined spending my summer any other way. Getting to go to Japan will truly be a lifelong memory.” Miller is the son of Tracy and Elizabeth Miller. His chapter adviser is Daresa Poe.

Dr. Ben Carson keynote speaker at 6th Annual Steamboat Institute Freedom Conference Burlington graduate Steamboat Institute chairman; Carson talks about saving America’s future; Disagrees with political correctness, has ideas to reduce debt, wants to save healthcare By Yvonne Miller If you are not familiar with Dr. Benjamin Carson, you will most likely be when the field of 2016 presidential candidates goes full force. Carson was keynote speaker at the 6th Annual Steamboat Institute Freedom Conference in Steamboat Springs, Colo. Jennifer Schubert-Akin, a 1975 graduate of Burlington High School, is chairman of the Steamboat Institute. As her sister, this reporter attended the three-day event, hearing experts on terrorist threats to America; a group of physicians who’ve formed the “Docs 4 Patient Care Foundation” and presented a look at where healthcare is now, where it’s headed and alternatives for the future; former U.S. Vice-President Dick Cheney’s wife Lynne Cheney, a historian, who discussed her latest book at James Madison; a woman who spoke of her life experience on “Entitlement to Enpowerment;” tax reform; growing the economy and much more. Carson has a resume a page long. He is a renowned surgeon who retired in 2013. Today he is an emeritus professor of neurology, oncology, plastic surgery and pediatrics at the John Hopkins School of Medicine. It’s there that he directed pediatric neurosurgery at the John Hopkins Children’s Center for 39 years. As Carson was introduced at the dinner on top of the Steamboat Ski Mountain, the success of his career highlights, such as surgeries separating Siamese twins

joined at the back of the head in 1987, was praised. When Carson took the podium, he was quick to mention the surgeries that were not successful. He said it takes “persistence” to make something successful. First he spoke of the nation’s debt of $18 trillion and counting, which he described as “so staggering – hard to imagine.” He said the nation has got to show fiscal responsibility. He mentioned previous societies like Greece, Egypt and Rome that fell. “If we fail to rediscover the basic principles of common sense, manners and morality, we will go the same way they did,” Carson said. He doesn’t think it’s too late to learn from mistakes of others and take corrective action to ensure a promising future for those who come after us. He said, “Lenin knew that an unsustainable debt was the way to destroy America. Our future is dependent on a welleducated populace. Otherwise we could be easily manipulated. That’s happening now – but it’s not too late.” Carson adamantly told the crowd, “I’m not politically correct.” He said political correctness “keeps you from talking about what you believe. Bad things happen when you stop talking.” He mentioned “polarization,” which he said results in all sorts of warfare – on class, on women, on race. “There’s nothing to be ashamed of in being wealthy,” Carson said. “Rich people

As a boy he was “deathly afraid of dogs.” He encountered this big dog Rusty that ran at him as he passed by daily. He learned to ignore the dog, and soon Rusty laid on the porch and didn’t even get up when the boy walked by the house. “That’s what the PC Police are – like Rusty – ignore them and they’ll go away,” Carson said. Referring to healthcare, he said one of the problems is the “layers and layers of bureaucracy between patients and doctors. You cannot be silent or the PC Police will win by default. Carson

Americans have common sense, but many have been beaten into submission. It’s time to wake them up!” To that comment, Carson received thunderous applause. He said, “People need to see the courage from others – the greatest generation and what they did for us.” Carson said those men and women can look at the nation presently and say, “You mean we did all that and now you are silent.” Referring to the recent fatal shooting of a black 18-year-old by a white police officer, Carson said he wasn’t taking sides as he didn’t have all the facts at that point. However, he quoted statistics that said last year about 100 black men were shot by police. In comparison 5,000 black males were killed by black men. He said a reoccurring problem across the nation is young men with no father figure. Carson said his parents were divorced when he was very young and he was raised by his mother who had only a third grade education. She was one of 24 children and married at age 13 – later to discover he was a bigamist. Carson was raised in the tenements and was extremely poor. He said his mother “refused to be a victim” and always found a way to provide for her children – offering to pick food for a farmer if she could take a small portion to feed her

family. “My mother had no excuses.’ He admitted he was an angry kid. “I was called dummy,” he recalled about making bad grades. “When everyone gave up on me, my mother didn’t.” His mother refused to let him play all the time and insisted he read, which he hated. Her children had to submit book reports to her – not realizing she couldn’t even read. He learned to love reading and became a good student. He said in reading he learned about people who started with nothing and vowed to be successful, he was inspired. He and his wife of 39 years, Candy, established Carson Reading Rooms to encourage young people to read. They also started Carson Scholars Fund, which recognizes young people of all backgrounds for exceptional academic and humanitarian accomplishments. Carson said people need to get educated about a candidate before they vote. “This government was created for the people, not the government,” Carson said. People receive inalienable rights from God, not the government. Carson said the nation’s churches have tax exemptions so they can help take care of others. Carson’s idea of fixing the economy is to eliminate all those “strangling” regulations on businesses. “People don’t go into business to make money for the government. They go into business to make money. A smart government creates an environment so businesses can thrive and will pay more taxes,” Carson said. He favors reforming the tax code and

getting rid of Obamacare as a way to reduce the national debt. He thinks the debt would be reduced greatly if businesses that have money outside the country could bring it back in to the U.S., tax free. “There are trillions of dollars sitting there on the sidelines because people are leery,” Carson said. “I think if we did this the debt could go down rapidly.” He suggests people like Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid must get out of Washington. Referring to the 300 or so bills Reid refuses to bring up for a vote in the Senate, Carson said, “He is paralyzing Washington. Silence will kill us. You’ve got to talk to even people you disagree with.” When asked about immigration, Carson said, “We need an immigration policy, not an illegal immigration policy.” He said people wishing to come to America must apply legally from outside the country. He said you can’t offer a job to immigrants before it’s offered to American citizens. Carson said he believes in President Reagan’s philosophy of “peace through strength” and building up the military. However, he said there are no sacred cows, not even the military, when cutting wasteful spending. Carson said the country “has to put the Constitution up on the top shelf and know that freedom is not free. Think about Pearl Harbor and D-Day. Those men ran forward – for us to live in freedom. If we have any concern for those who come after us, we will do something.”

Australian farmer Darren Doherty to teach profitable land use course Fifth-generation Australian farmer Darren Doherty is coming to droughtstricken western Oklahoma to teach a whole-farm land stewardship method. His Regrarians Platform integrates Keyline速 Design, Holistic Management速 and Permaculture to enable farmers to combat drought and maximize profits while being consummate stewards of their land. The course will be held Sept 18-20 at Walnut Creek Farms near Waynoka. Contact Kim Barker, at 580-7320244 or barker_k@hotmail.com for registration information. Kim Barker and family own Walnut Creek Farms, which produces grass-fed beef and lamb, pastured pork, chickens, and turkeys, and free

range eggs. Walnut Creek is pleased to bring Doherty to Oklahoma, as his Regrarians Platform is a comprehensive, integrated process. Prior students report that he possesses that rare genius as a teacher, who makes complex information easy to digest and apply to real-world situations. The Regrarians Platform includes climate, geography, water access, forestry, buildings, fences, soils, marketing and energy, and the human interaction with each of these. This is not a course of abstract ideas, but a course of practical, effective, knowledge and tools for immediate use on the farm that has helped thousands of farmers worldwide.
