FAMILY FEUD COMES TO KIOWA – On Kiowa’s Labor Day stage in Progress Park, members of two of the community’s longtime families take each other on in a friendly game of Family Feud where the “final answer” is hilarity. Especially when the families give answers to the question, “What is better served hot?”Although the Newton family (at left) didn’t win any points in the regular rounds of competition, they stole the win when the Gillig family choked on their final question and the stakes were high. Barber County Sheriff Justin Rugg played the announcer, adding to the silliness. The sheriff also shared his vocal talents with the crowd later during Karaoke. Mike Lohrenz: new probation and parole officer
Mike Lohrenz, Department of Corrections probation and parole officer, has been recently stationed in Alva. His office is being moved from the basement of the Woods County Courthouse to the former Chamber of Commerce building on the west side of the square at 410 College. Photo by Lynn L. Martin By Lynn L. Martin With the retirement of Rob Melton, the Department of Corrections (DOC) has assigned 27-year veteran Mike Lohrenz to the probation and parole position for Woods and Alfalfa counties. Lohrenz began his DOC career with a year at the James Crabtree Correctional Center in Helena back in 1987. Then he was transferred to the Community Correctional Center in Enid. After about a year there, Lohrenz went into case management for 17 years, with a brief foray into records.
“I decided to try probation and parole and have been at that for about 10 years,” he said. The variety of his jobs in corrections has caused him to work in Helena, Enid, Perry, back to Enid and now Alva. His first probation position was in Perry. Mike and his wife live on a family farm close to Orienta. He'll be driving to Alva each day from the farm. She works for State Farm in Enid. “We're kind of driving in different directions now, but she loves her job,” he noted. “The plan is this will be my last stop.

I can retire in a year if I wish. I told my supervisor I'd give it at least two years and he thinks that I may like Alva well enough that I may want to stay longer than that. I like the small communities; I grew up in Fairview,” he said. The job load in Alva includes 60-65 clients from Woods and Alfalfa counties. “My supervisor is saying I may pick up responsibility for Major County in the near future,” Lohrenz said. “I'm used to an Enid case load of between 85 and 110. So 60 right now is going to be a picnic compared to that,” he said. “The best part of the job, and most officers don't agree, is dealing with the clients. I like hoping I can make a difference. After 27 years, I've concluded the worst part of the job is the politics. The powers that be sometimes don't understand how it is out in the field and I sometimes wish they would listen to us more. “The Department of Corrections is in a bit of trouble financially. The budget that the director is having to work with is sort of being done on the backs of the personnel, such as correctional officers and probation officers. I hate to see that. Unfortunately, I'm afraid some incident will happen that gets somebody killed or hurt. It seems to take something like that for changes to be made,” he said. The Lohrenz have two kids; son Zac is director of IT technology at Emmanuel Baptist Church in Enid, and is married to Amanda, who is a special ed teacher in Enid. Daughter Caitlyn has been married about two years now. She's going to school and works at a branch of a credit-union. When asked about his hobbies, Lohrenz answered, “My wife keeps telling me I need to get a hobby. I guess my hobby is trying to keep up with the chores around the farm. I like to golf, but I don't do much of it, but I participate in the Department of Corrections golf tournaments.”

By Lynn L. Martin The Oklahoma State Department of Education provided the Accountability (A-F Report Cards) for the Alva School District on September 4. Supt. Steve Parkhurst seemed skeptical of his confidence in how the report cards are calculated and said that all Alva sites are the same or better than last year. Lincoln Elementary scored a Bwith an 80; Longfellow scored a Awith a 91; Washington Elementary scored an A- with a 91; Alva Middle School scored C+ with a 79 and Alva High School scored B with an 84. A major item accomplished was the board's acceptance of the AEA Teacher's contract for the 2014-2015 school year. A Christmas bonus has been negotiated this year. Teachers with 0 – 5 years of experience will receive $500; 6-11 years of experience will receive $1000; teachers with 1217 years of experience will receive $1500, teachers with 18-25 years of experience will receive $2000 and those with 25 years of experience or more will receive $2500. Supt. Parkhurst said this is a one-year bonus agreement. The board approved a contract with the City of Alva for a police officer to be on duty at varying sites for six hours per day during the school year. Ron Vasquez has been named as the “School Resource Officer” for this
year. The Alva district will pay the City of Alva $28.03 per hour for his services. He remains the employee of the Alva Police Department. The board reluctantly approved a request to permit Ridge Hughbanks to participate in the National FFA chorus in Louisville, Kentucky, October 25-November 1, 2015. Board member Tiffany Slater was vocal about not wanting to send a 17year old student out of state without faculty supervision. His father had submitted a letter saying the solo travel was OK with the family. Lynda Martin also expressed concern about district liability in the event something happened. The approval was finally given with the directive to the Superintendent that a faculty member (or other adult sponsor) be listed on a future agenda for approval to accompany Hughbanks on the trip. During the principals' reports, the following enrollment figures were provided: Washington School – 216; Longfellow School – 217; Lincoln School – 140; Alva Middle School -212, and Alva High School - 257. AHS principal Les Potter told the board that Tuesday, September 9, 2014, each high school student will be assigned a new laptop computer according to the plan agreed upon earlier in the year. The students may take these home. Some textbooks will be installed on some of the computers.
The value of each computer has been set at $999.99 and the student/ parents must sign an agreement to be responsible for paying for loss or damage. Potter said they hoped to find a source of insurance that could assist in covering the computers. Supt. Parkhurst expressed frustration at the continuing heating/ air-conditioning equipment problems. A couple years ago, the district voted a bond-issue to replace many airconditioning units. Those that weren't replaced are going out and since July 2015, the district has received bills totaling $45,000 for HVAC repairs. He has also told the board he has requested Luckenbill Mechanical of Enid to analyze the air-conditioning in Memorial Auditorium as he continues to receive complaints about poor performance in that venue. Share Trust has responded to a request from the district to help with $25,000 toward improvement of the softball field. This money will be used to provide sod, a scoreboard, and a laser-leveling process for the dirt work on the field. The Professional Development Committee was appointed: Members are Alysson Tucker, Dana Manning, Cherie Hurst, Gena Denton, Gail Swallow and Teresa Rader. Appointments were made to the Internal Activities Committee. They are: Les Potter, Jeff Levetzow, Steve Gale, Tammy Duncan, Randy Nation and Marcia Martin.. The gifted and talented committee was named. This committee consists of both parents and faculty. Members include: Shonda Smith and Joy Nightengale; Gena Denton and Jenny Webster, Dixie Meyer, Kasey Adair, Machelle Mapes and Trina PiperHughbanks; Ramona Cummings and Tim Argo.

Winners of BBQ Bash at County Fair Announced By Lynn L. Martin The fourth annual BBQ Bash "Smoke in the Woods" competition was held Saturday at the Woods County Free Fair. Ten teams competed in four categories: chicken; ribs, pork butt, and brisket. Then an overall grand champion was selected. David Hamil, president of the Woods County Free Fair Association said initially 15 teams had signed up, but five from the Eastern part of the state were discouraged by the 3 a.m. rainy weather and dropped out on the morning of the competition. He said, "As it turned out, we had a perfect day for the cook-off." The winning categories were dominated by the Kenneth Vendetti family. They took 1st place in chicken; 1st place in ribs, 1st place in pork butt, and the overall Grand Champion prize. Second place in chicken went to Matt Nickel while third place went to Lynn Bolar. In the ribs competition, Matt Nickel took second place and Harley Wares
earned third place. The second place winner in pork butt cooking was Billy Eades and third place was Mark Pettus. In the brisket category, first place went to Lynn Bolar, second place to Mark Pettus and third place to Billy Eades. The winners received their entry fee
back plus added money. About one-hundred people showed up for the free feed at 7 p.m. when the winners were announced. The menu consisted of pulled pork meat, beans, chips and drink. They were entertained with a live band: Double D's of Mooreland, Oklahoma.

Cherokee Board reviews remodeling plans By Lynn L. Martin The Cherokee school board got their first look at preliminary drawings for four remodeling projects Monday night. Architect James Parker spent an hour and one-half discussing details of the drawings with board members Amber Wilhite, Kory Littlefield and Melissa Kimminau. Not present was Tony Hellar. The seat vacated by the resignation of T. J. Allison has not been filled. Allison was recently diagnosed with cancer and is turning his attention to fighting that. Two men attended the meeting who said they were interested in being appointed to the board. Each was given a few minutes to express to the board why they wanted to serve. Jeff White, who had previously been a member of the board when “we had absolutely no money said he had responded to a
call from T. J. Allison, his friend, who suggested he step up and replace him. The other person was Sam Miller, a Burlington graduate who has several relatives in the Cherokee School system. Neither man spoke more than oneminute. The current board members may choose to appoint either man, or they could decide to call for an election. One of those choices will be on a future agenda. The lengthy architectural discussion with James Parker was hampered because land survey results are not yet available. The Cherokee board has purchased a couple of parcels of land, and no decision has been made as to whether the football field will be oriented east-west or north-south. As a result, drawings for a remodeled concession stand and rest rooms really couldn't be
discussed with much certainty because the orientation of the buildings would change depending upon the orientation of the football field. Next discussed was remodeling the high school auditorium. The architect proposed reducing the capacity of the auditorium by 200 seats since it is deemed over-capacity for the size of the community. Melissa Kimminau in particular was opposed to that much of a reduction. There is a need to create wheel-chair space in the remodeled auditorium. Also, many of the original seats are damaged. Eventually the board members agreed that a reduction of about 65 seats would be appropriate. The space opened up would allow a building-long pathway from the lobby to the stage for wheel-chairs and also about three spots for wheel-chairs in the audience area. The remaining seats will not be replaced, but hopefully re-upholstered. New audio-visual equipment and new lighting along with the handicapped access is the main goal, said Superintendent Cory Ellis. A new ag-barn building was next discussed. That building will be used so in-town students can have farm-animals. The architect explained he had included space for ten animal pens. Finally, a drawing of proposed elementary school improvements was viewed. A few changes were suggested to the architect. By this time in the discussion, it was clear substantial changes were needed in all drawings,

South Barber Board hears updates on capital improvements, enrollment and swimming By Yvonne Miller South Barber's Board of Education met Monday evening for their September meeting. President Steve Allen opened the meeting with all members present except Jeff Black. They are: Dooli Rugg, Deb Helfrich, Mike Anderson, Mark Pollock and Dana Roark. Superintendent Brad Morris and Board Clerk were also seated at the board table. Morris reported that estimated Full Time Equivalent (FTE) enrollment is at 224. The official student count day on which state aid is based is September 20 which is a Saturday this year so the count day will be September 22. USD 255 had 235 FTE students turned in last year. Morris said this will mean approximately $65,000 less in state aid for this school year. Morris provided enrollment numbers: PreK - 6th grade 150 students (of that 31 are Pre-K); 39 are junior high; and 64 are high school. Principal Brent Shaffer said that last school year the high school had 68 students and the junior high had 40. The superintendent said that the new bleachers were partially finished for the opening football games last week. Work continues on them. He said they are reworking plans on the handicap ramp on the north end. He said Jeff Black is donating a lot of his labor and more for this project. When asked, Morris said the visitor side bleachers have not yet been touched, but will be soon. Rugg asked if the contractor is having to pay any of the extra expense for concrete, etc. With the new parking lot at the high
school, Morris said a new handicap ramp is being installed near the front doors and should be complete in the next few weeks. The grade school had a leak in the relatively new roof and is to be fixed this week. Principal Marcia Cantrell said they had a plumbing leak that ran down to the music room which was fixed. Morris is having the water fountains inspected as they are not working properly. Morris said there are mechanical problems with the Hazelton bus. He seeks options for lease/purchase of another bus. The superintendent did a walkthrough on the new sidewalk project by the high school with all construction parties. A few issues remain before it's complete, he said. Superintendent Morris presented a certificate of achievement to board member Helfrich. This is for her participation in the KASB Leadership Academy Training Program for 2013-14. Ann Walz Addresses Board About Swimming Program Ann Walz addressed the board, requesting that swimming in physical education classes the first two weeks of school be reinstated next year for elementary and junior high students. This is the second year students have not gone to the city pool during PE class. PE teacher Deb Hitchcock incorporated swimming into her program for many years prior to this. Walz said she's heard many inquiries from parents wanting the swimming reinstated for students and said, “It is a missed program.” She listed many
positives for students beyond the exercise such as building self-confidence and because swimming is a life skill. Walz said when she spoke to Superintendent Morris about the matter he listed numerous reasons not to have swimming. Some of those were finances; bus drivers (taking away from other duties); no lifeguards; no need to cool down the kids with the new air conditioning system at the grade school. Board President Allen said the board would revisit the issue in November or December and make a decision then. Later in the meeting, Allen said, “Communication is the key,” and how important communication is between the board, administration and public. If parents want something at the school they need to voice their opinion, he said. More South Barber School Board Business In a report from the Site Council. Principal Cantrell said a few parents voiced concern about sometimes speeding and heavy truck traffic by the grade school when dropping off and picking up children. They requested a circle drive. Since that's not financially feasible at this time, the board requests the police department keep a keen eye, realizing officers already patrol that area. Payment of current bills totaling $529,193.18 received board approval. A request to use the high school facilities for recreation football was approved. Board received the redesigned District Policy Handbook which is 538 pages. That's because it now has one item/page. Morris said the wording is changed to the board “may” instead of “shall.” The board is to review the handbook and approve at a future meeting. Baptist Minister Ken Bowden requested and received board approval to use the auditorium Wednesday, October 22. This is for Ballet Emmanuel who uses ballet to tell Biblical stories. They performed at the high school last year. Principal Cantrell told of many professional development trainings the elementary teachers have and are attending. She said former SB teacher Deb Esau who is a reading specialist presented

Sooners are overall winners of Kiowa's 30th Annual Labor Day 5K Race
By Yvonne Miller When a shot signaled the start of Kiowa's 30th Annual 5K Labor Day Race Monday just after 8 a.m., the thermometer read a comfortable 68 degrees with a slight breeze. However, runners said they felt the humidity that turned into a sauna by afternoon with temperatures in the mid90s.

In keeping with tradition, the downtown of Kiowa, Kan., buzzed with excitement as 410 runners congregated on Main Street for the race sponsored by Kiowa's First State Bank. Residents along the race route sat in lawn chairs to watch and some handed runners much-appreciated water. Race Director Kent McBrayer said of the 410 entries, 352 finished the 3.1 mile race through the brick streets of the community. McBrayer said how pleased he is that Kiowa women Erin Merklein and Melissa (Gillig) Rector joined him as codirectors of the race this year.
Pond Creek-Hunter High School student Tiarra Davis wins the overall female division of Kiowa’s 30th Annual Labor Day 5K Race. She runs in the company of Ryan Vail (No. 147), who is new to Kiowa and won second place in the men’s age 20-29 division with a 21:32. The third runner who is neckand-neck with Davis and Vail is Laton Heger (No. 142) of Hugoton, Kan., who was third in the men’s age 20-29 with a 21:35. Photo by Yvonne Miller
The overall winner and winner of the male division is Mylo Miller, who finished in 18 minutes and 46 seconds. This is his second time to run and win Kiowa's 5K. Miller won the race in 2010 with a time of 17:46. Miller, 34, is the son-in-law of Kiowa couple Mark and Elaine Johnson. He's married to their daughter Heather. The Millers live in Midwest City where he is an assistant principal at Harding Charter School. He was a cross-country runner in high school and college and made AllAmerican. He runs daily and has run the Oklahoma City Marathon. Overall winner of the female division was Tiarra Davis. She is a student at Pond Creek-Hunter High School in Oklahoma. Davis beat the other females with a time of 21:28. McBrayer said Davis won her age division last year, setting a new record for that category. That was her first year to enter Kiowa's race. Kiowa Hospital offers CEO position, gears for Jeans and Gems Sept. 20 Jeans and Gems tickets on sale now at several Kiowa locations By Yvonne Miller At the late August meeting of the Kiowa District Hospital Board, members voted to extend an offer to the candidate for the hospital administrator/CEO position. As of Monday afternoon, Hospital CFO Janell Goodno said the hospital board and candidate are still in negotiations. The day of the evening board meeting the candidate met with board members for two hours in the afternoon as reflected in special meeting minutes. In another change of positions, Kim Balding is the new interim administrator at the Kiowa Manor. She was Director of Nurses at the manor and recently passed her administrator's license testing. Donna Renner becomes the manor's interim DON. Board President Zack Odell called the meeting to order with all members present, including: Lori Schrock, Chantae Simpson, Brenna May and Jim Parker. Also present were: Hospital Interim CEO Steve Davis; CFO Goodno; Dr. Paul Wilhelm; Melissa Stroh, PA; Hospital DON Heidi Courson; Lab Manager Gay Farney; Manor Interim CEO Balding; Friends of the Hospital and Manor Foundation President Judy Schrock; and several members of the public. Jeans and Gems Hospital Fundraiser Sept. 20 Those who love steaks and shrimp and want to support the Kiowa District Hospital and Clinic need to attend the 2nd Annual Jeans and Gems fundraiser on September 20 at 6:30 p.m., at Kiowa's Community Building. Tickets to the event are $60 each and feature a steak and shrimp buffet and bar, catered by Yur Place of Hardtner. Tickets are available at Simpson's, Shirts and More, and the Kiowa Clinic. A highlight of the evening will be a silent and live auction. Schrock said some of the items donated so far are: a La-ZBoy rocker/recliner from Forsyth's; a .22 rifle; a Browning 12-gauge shotgun; John Deere kids pedal tractor; JD 2500psi power washer; K2 cooler; homemade peach cuts by Yvonne Harbaugh; gourmet pies; 20 bales of early Sumac feed;
designer jewelry and much more to come. The Foundation has a Facebook page for this event where they are starting to post auction item photos. Check it out (type Friends of Kiowa District Hospital and Manor Presents and the page will come up for you). For more information, contact Judy Schrock at 620-825-6160. Schrock said the Foundation still needs to raise approximately $130,000 for bricks and mortar to pay their share of the new hospital building. This fundraiser is designed to help with that cause. Anyone who has stayed at the new facility or had a family member there knows what a gem it is. There's spacious private rooms, each with a private restroom. The nursing and all staff shows such compassion in their caregiving. People supporting the hospital also support the community, a valued employer in the community. Hospital and Manor Statistics and Financials for July July was a slow month for hospital admissions for a total of nine. Total days of acute and swingbed care were 28. Annual Waynoka Alfalfa County Commissioner’s FCCLA officer Meeting retreat adventure On July 31Waynoka FCCLA officers met for their annual officer’s retreat. They had a fresh and flavorful lunch at Fuzzy’s Tacos in Oklahoma City. They discussed chapter plans and goals, as well as personal goals for the year. Officers planned fundraisers, chapter service projects and community service events for the next academic year. Afterward they went to OKC Riversport Adventures. The main part is a giant ropes course. You have two options to get up to the top of the tower, go through the insane obstacle course, six stories tall mind you, complete with a balance beam or the
stairs. Once you get to the top you can then go down the tallest slide in America all the way to the bottom. A normal slide is pretty mundane, but a slide six stories in the air is, for lack of better word, AWESOME. If a ginormous slide isn’t enough for you, you can throw yourself off the Rumble Jump – literally throw yourself. There’s a ledge and you just jump off to a landing pad and hope your harness isn’t faulty! After everyone got their fill of heights, they went kayaking on the Oklahoma River! The officers were all pumped for this year by the time the day was over.
By Leslie Nation CHEROKEE, Okla.—The Alfalfa County commissioners met for their regular Monday morning meeting on Sep. 8 at the county courthouse to conduct business. After reviewing and approving the minutes from their meeting on Aug. 25, the commissioners inspected the regular items on their agenda for approval such as: M & O warrants, blanket purchase orders, road crossing permits, and monthly officer reports. Other items on the agenda that the commissioners reviewed and approved were: • No federal funding and environmental resolution project bridge and approached on EW-24 over Eagle Chief Creek—a mile north of Aline, • Resolution project agreement to resurface EW-08 from six miles east of Byron extending east four miles, • and Project maintenance, financing, and right-of-way agreement EW-08 from six miles east of Byron extending east four miles. The commissioners then approved the county clerk to go out on bids for 12 month ballots, and took no action on deciding to switch to the ICQ Agenda Program before adjourning the meeting.
ALVA UNLIMITED hose attending the Waynoka FCCLA officers retreat are from left to right: Caitlin Chapman, Brooklinn Weber, Kayle Phillips, Brandon Green, Tatum Rose, Chloe Hughes, Andrew Miller and Austin Durkee.

Cherokee viewed. A few changes were suggested to the architect. By this time in the discussion, it was clear substantial changes were needed in all drawings, some dependent upon the yet to be delivered land survey results. In employee news, the board accepted the resignation of Paulla Alford. They agreed to hire Joann Agee as a paraprofessional; Debra Lohrding as a Pre-K aide and Veronica Gallegos as a high school paraprofessional. Enrollment for the district stands at 365, the same as last year. Supt. Ellis said the district has received $12-$15 thousand in donations to help equip an elementary band. He said a total of $20,000 will be needed. He reported a survey of students revealed that 7 high school students, 27 seventh and eighth graders, and 60 fifth and sixth graders are interested. The board agreed to declare shop equipment surplus along with some athletic equipment. Supt. Ellis said it has been four-years since shop was offered, and with the resignation of the only teacher certified to teach shop, it would be wise to clear-up the space. Board member Kory Littlefield also was concerned that the fifty-year age of most of the power tools meant that modern safety features would not be present.

VOTE NOVEMBER 4TH I was humbled by the overwhelming support in the primary election. I take this District 3 commissioner campaign very seriously. I will be honest and dedicated to the people of District 3, and more importantly, all the citizens of Woods County. My campaign will be based off facts and not ction. I have done the research and understand the budget that I would be working with in this district. I know the improvements that can be made within that budget and will not make any promises that I cannot deliver. That is my promise.
