The 2014 harvest lives up to disastrous predictions By Yvonne Miller A few weeks ago when the Newsgram featured a story quoting area elevator operators, their prediction of the 2014 wheat harvest was grim. Unfortunately, their predictions were right on the money – well, actually the lack of money that will be generated by this harvest. The big story is that combines are running in area wheat fields, yet hardly any trucks filled with grain are coming in to the elevators. Bushel-per-acre yields are that bad. Farmers are first saving enough grain cut from their fields for seed wheat – the wheat they’ll save in their grain bins to plant a new crop in the fall. The remainder goes to the elevator, which is not much this year. The 2014 wheat crop experienced severe drought, freeze, early hot The Masonic Lodge of Alva teamed up with First Christian Church with a pancake feed and raised about $3,000 for the Connor Sneary family. Then the Masonic Lodge worked with Greg Baker for a steak feed at his place and another $3,000 was raised. The amount of $6,000 was explained to the Masonic Foundation and they matched it with another $6,000. So a check of $12,670 was presented to the Sneary family on Monday evening at the Masonic Lodge. Now that combines are trying to cut the less-than-desirable wheat fields, it keeps raining. No one seems to mind that much because this area is so desperate for moisture. Schmeissner The Tonight Show helps – Knedler me get to bed earlier announce engagement Lynn Says
By Lynn L. Martin If you watch late night television, you know that Jay Leno retired after the Olympics in February, being replaced by 20-year-younger Jimmy Fallon. Jay was a favorite of mine because his jokes were generally based on the news of the day and often “cut-to-the-chase” and nailed the issues in a sentence or two. Jay frequently scored major interviews with people in the news, including the first interview with a sitting president, Barack Obama. I’ve tried really hard to like Jimmy Fallon’s show, but it isn’t growing on me very much. Perhaps I’m showing my age, but there is too much giggling on the show. Fallon is all the time laughing at something and folding over on his desk in uncontrolled giggles. That might be OK if I could figure out what was so funny. Fallon’s opening monologue isn’t nearly as well-composed as Leno’s and is often very bland. Also, he gets stuck on topics and won’t let them go week after week. For example, he is in love with the ugly bug-eyed picture of round-faced Toronto major Rob Ford. The first couple of times were great, but do I need to see if 50 times? More recently, a dancing man in a Panda bear suit has danced across the stage and then followed by a camera down the hallway. Fallon seems to think this is really, really funny and has repeated it several times. I suppose if my fiveyear-old granddaughter did it I would think it funny too. Fallon occasionally plays some parlor-like games with his guests that are usually very entertaining.
Overall, now, for me, if the guest list doesn’t look very interesting, I’m getting to bed about an hour earlier. That’s healthy, I think. TV Ratings I guess my take on the show is out-ofline with the rest of America. I looked up late night TV show ratings a couple days ago and Fallon has even expanded on the lead that Leno held in late night ratings. Returning to the topic of Jay Leno, a new book, “Behind the Curtain,” will be released at the end of June authored by the Dave Berg, who did much of the booking of Jay’s guests. He tells a lot of insider stories. Here are a couple of excerpts. “To help with stage fright, Leno came up with the idea of The Jay Bar, a mobile station loaded with beer and wine to help guests unwind before the show. But some guests didn’t know when to turn off the spigot. In 2003, Quentin Tarantino hit The Jay Bar so hard that he was slurring and “occasionally incoherent” on air. “Then there were the divas. Eddie Murphy handed over an entire page of necessities for the 45 minutes he spent in his dressing room prior to his appearance. It included, “4 Snapple Fruit Punch, 4 Snapple Orangeade, 4 Snapple Grapeade, 4 Dr. Browne’s Cream Soda, 4 Dr. Browne’s Root Beer, Coke in glass bottles, bananas, cherries, Evian bottled water, Juicy Fruit gum, Snickers, Milky Ways, peppermints, York Peppermint Patties, writing pads/pencils/pens, regular-sized towels, washcloths/small.” Jessica Simpson would come on only if they paid for her hair and makeup – a tab she estimated at $18,000. The show refused. But when Sarah Palin agreed to go on after her 2008 defeat for vice president, the show coughed up $35,000 to fly her family and friends on a private jet from Anchorage, Alaska.

By Laura Scott Waynoka Board of Education met for is regular meeting on Monday, June 2, at 7:30 p.m. in the Waynoka School Board Room. Attendance was taken promptly at 7:30 p.m. Board members present were Andy Ferguson, Rick George, Donnie Miller, Clint Olson and Marinda Zook. Also present was Loren Tackett, superintendent of schools; Michael Meriwether, principal; Lori Adair, minutes clerk; and guests Scott Kysar and Don Blalock. No visitor comments were made. The minutes of the May 5 regular meeting and all items on the consent agenda were approved by the board. In the superintendent’s report, Tackett informed the board that he had contacted the insurance company on the hail damage that the school property and vehicles had received. The damage to the school house on Rose Street was also turned in to the insurance company. The band room will be painted and new
carpet installed. Also, all of the water fountains will be replaced. The board members voted to approve the temporary fiscal year 2014-2015 appropriations with a motion by Andy Ferguson and a second by Marinda Zook. They also voted in favor of renewing membership with the Oklahoma State School Boards Assocation for the 20142015 school year. A motion passed to approve the agreement with Alcohol and Drug Testing, Inc., for the bus drivers’ alcohol and drug testing with a motion by Andy Ferguson and a second by Donnie Miller. School board members approved the continued service agreement with the Oklahoma Public Schools Unemployment Compensation Trust Account and Oklahoma State School Boards Association. All members voted in favor a contract for legal services with the Center for Education Law and to continue the
Workers’ Compensation proposal for 2014-2015 with the Oklahoma School Assurance Group. Board members entered into a discussion involving the future scheduling and use of equipment for Little League and junior high football. Members voted in favor, and determined on a time limit of four quarters or one hour. The board met in executive session to discuss personnel decisions at 8:09 p.m. and returned to open session at 8:28 p.m. Personnel approvals included the re-employment of Troy Gosney as the vocational agriculture teacher; elementary teachers Renea Gaskill and Shannon Gosney; Kelly Like, cook; Sage Tackett, paraprofessional; and Sacajawea Smith, custodian. In other news, the Waynoka School Board began to discuss the possibility of taking bids for a new school bus. The meeting adjourned at 8:35 p.m.
Waynoka School Board meets to discuss personnel decisions
Several local races decided Tuesday By Marione Martin Next Tuesday’s primary election will probably settle who will be the next judge for district 4, the next district attorney for district 28 and Alfalfa County commissioner in district 1. Since the three judicial
candidates file non-partisan, a clear majority above 50 percent will settle that race. Candidates are Mike Stake of Woodward, Jeremy Bays of Alva and Justin P. Eilers of Mooreland. The two candidates for Alfalfa County commissioner in district 1
are Jay Hague and Doug Murrow. Both men filed as Republicans, so a majority vote on June 24 will decide that contest. Woods County has three Republican candidates and one Democrat running for district 3 commissioner. Incumbent Mike Goucher, John Smiley and Mark Reed filed as Republicans. The primary June 24 will decide which man faces Democrat John Fuqua in the general election in November. Only voters residing in district 3 of Woods County will be able to vote on commissioners in that district. Republican voters will choose between Christopher M. Boring of Woodward and Danny Lohmann of Aline for district attorney. No Democrats filed, so the primary should determine that race. Republicans have a number of other primary races on their ballot. He worked as a farmer, custom harvester, carpenter and raised cattle. RUTH ELLA NUTTER Funeral services for Ruth Ella Nutter will be 2 p.m. Friday, June 20, 2014, at the Waynoka First Baptist Church. Interment will be in the Memorial Hill Cemetery under the direction of Marshall Funeral Home of Waynoka, LLC. Ruth Ella Nutter, daughter of the late Otto and Georgia Irene (Shearer) Golbek, was born Feb. 13, 1938, in Woods County, Okla., and passed away June 13, 2014, at Alva, Okla., at the age of 76 years and 4 months. Ruth attended Manilla School and Waynoka High School. On July 21, 1955, she was united in marriage to Gerald Edward “Pete” Nutter in Alva. They made their home on the farm north of Waynoka. She worked as a nurse’s aide at Waynoka Nursing Home, at Smitty’s IGA Store, the Dairy Maid, and on the family farm. Some of her farm duties were milking cows, tractor driving and animal care, including baby ostriches. She was an excellent cook, providing many meals for farmhands, and an immaculate homemaker who was devoted to her husband and children. She was a member of the Morning Star Baptist Church until it

Burlington FFA members explore leadership in nation’s capital

With their FFA jackets packed and cross-county trip before them, three Burlington FFA members recently traveled to our nation’s capital to learn about leadership. Lexi Clark, Sadie Collins, Abbie Newman and their FFA advisor, Travis Bradshaw, recently attended the FFA’s Washington Leadership Conference in Washington, D.C. This five-day conference is designed to teach FFA members how to become effective leaders by learning their purpose, valuing people, taking action, and serving others. After arriving in Washington, D.C., with 165 other Oklahoma FFA members, the Burlington FFA members toured Mount Vernon, the home and farm of our nation’s first president, George Washington. “It was amazing to walk through the halls of Washington’s home and see the farming techniques he was using on his operation,” Collins stated. After their arrival at the conference headquarters, Oklahoma FFA members were mixed with approximately 150 other FFA members from across the country for the duration of the conference. Members were divided into small groups and began to work on the leadership curriculum developed for the conference. During the week FFA members toured the Jefferson Memorial, Lincoln

They were also able to meet with senators Jim Inhofe and Tom Coburn. “I loved being able to see the monuments at night.” Newman said. “It really makes you think about the thousands of Americans who have given their lives to defend our country.” FFA members also had the opportunity to tour the Newseum, one of the newest museums, which highlights the progress of American journalism. Clark particularly enjoyed this experience as she has been active in writing and photography through the FFA’s Agricultural Communications Career Development Event. “Seeing the exhibit featuring the best photographs of the year inspired me to work on my photography skills this next year,” remarked Clark. The conference was concluded with members packaging food to ship to needy children in third-world countries. These three Burlington FFA members hope to take the lessons and leadership skills acquired during their week in Washington, D.C., back to their chapter and encourage their fellow chapter members to continue to make a difference.

The Timberlake High chapter of FCCLA (Family, Career and Community Leaders of America) has been selected to receive the 2014 National Runner-up Families First Award sponsored by the national FCCLA organization. Families First is a peer education program created by FCCLA designed to teach students how family relationships improve through communication, respect, cooperation
and sharing; coping with challenges; and taking responsibility for decisions. As the national runner-up winner, the Timberlake High FCCLA chapter will receive a $500 award, presented to them at the 2014 FCCLA National Leadership Conference July 6-10 in San Antonio, Texas. Members of the Timberlake High FCCLA chapter organized a tornado safety project in response to the
devastating EI Reno tornadoes in 2011. Their efforts centered on educating their peers and community members about the dangers of tornadoes, increasing tornado safety awareness and encouraging individuals to adopt practical safety preparedness measures. Members developed a workshop and presentation on tornado safety that they presented to over 200 students in their school.

Alfalfa County commissioners discuss bid for EMS building By Leslie Nation Alfalfa County commissioners Doug Murrow, Chad Roach and Toby Walker met for their regular Monday meeting at 10 a.m. June 16 at the Alfalfa County courthouse. After approval of the minutes from last meeting, and then the approval of the regular items on their agenda – M & O warrants, blanket purchase orders, and road crossing permits – the commissioners continued with the rest of their agenda. There were a total of 23 road crossing permits available for inspection at the meeting. The commissioners then discussed the bids reviewed by the 522 Ambulance Board June 10 of three different contractors to construct an Alfalfa County EMS build-
ing. The building would house ambulances and personnel for the Cherokee station. After the 522 Ambulance Board reviewed the references, money bid and timeframe that each contractor submitted, they voted unanimously for Henson Construction Co. Henson Construction was neither the highest nor the lowest bid, but the 522 board felt they would do the best job for this type of building. Being a more local company than the others, the board also felt they would be more inclined to use subcontractors the board was more familiar with. Upon reviewing the letter from the 522 board, the commissioners approved the bid of using Henson Construction for the construction of the EMS building. The commissioners then moved on to open and review the six-month bids. Thirty bids were inspected and approved by the commissioners. Moving on with the agenda, the mem-
bers approved the retirement notice given by Alfalfa County Sheriff Charlie Tucker that will be effective June 30. “It has been an honor to serve Alfalfa County and its residents as sheriff for the last 23 years,” wrote Tucker in a letter to the commissioners. “I have many memories to carry with me from my time of service and many stories to pass on as I spend more time with my grandchildren and embark on other family adventures.” The resolution agreement and the project finance and right-of-way maintenance for the Byron blacktop were both approved by the commissioners before adjourning their meeting. I have known Mike for years, rst as a friend when our daughter baby sat his three children, then later on at a professional level when I was working at the county as part time help,( later to become a secretary and receiving ofcer) and he became the county commissioner for Dist. #3. Mike has been a long time resident of Woods County and graduated the Waynoka public school system, then furthering his education by attending and graduating Okmulgee Tech with a degree in diesel and heavy equipment. He and his wife Kim who is a teacher live an in older home in rural Woods County. They are also engaged in farming and ranching and tourism. Both are community oriented and wholeheartedly support and enjoy, FHA, FFA, Sports, Education, and Arts such as the nescatunga festival. Mike supports job growth as he has worked on the Avard Rail Park, and was delighted when the CED#8 ofce opened in Alva, and the E911 service was created as these employ several people from this area. Mike has acquired a great deal of experience during his 16 years of tenure in public service. The job does entail road maintenance (insuring public travel safety whether in a private, farming, or company vehicle). As I write this a paving chip and seal project was worked on last week on the Aline Blacktop, 24 miles long, this being the last paved road that had not been repaved since he has been in ofce. Now it will be time to start over again and as such he has a plan to pave CR 500 North of Craig, Craig road west of Hwy. 281 and to repair the edges of the Avard blacktop. Dist. #3 has the largest amount of road miles in the county at over 600, with Dist.2 and Dist.1 each having over 300 and 400. Each road Dept. receives the same amount of income (and this uctuates monthly) no matter the miles so Mike has to budget accordingly, public accounting is very different than private or corporate in my opinion. Besides roads the job consists of being an call 24/7, working with constituents, entities such as ACCO, ODOT, the railroads(over crossings), replacing bridges (over 45 plus have been replaced, with two just recently nished East of Avard), mowing, signage (Each intersection has E911 signs placed), the courthouse, local communities, re, ambulance, police, FEMA, as well as other Commissioners including those from other Counties(by attending ACCO and the CED meetings),always accounting for equipment repairs vs purchasing new equipment, keeping abreast of new laws and legislation that effect operating procedures, 5 year bridge plans, working almost round the clock when a rain or snow disaster happens such as during the last big snow storm to open roads to get people where they could get out of their homes, helping Alva get to their water well elds, and electric Companies get to downed power lines. Sometimes the job consists of helping others such as the Waynoka School with football eld goal posts, or the Rodeo grounds or wanting to install 2 new re hydrants on the rural water line in Eastern Woods County. He is the oodplain manager so the public can buy ood insurance if they need or want to in this county, and must attend continuing education for this. He is on the Woods County Industrial Development Authority and on the OEDA board that has awarded numerous grants to the communities such as a Storm shelter in Hopeton, Fire Dept. vehicles, (such as the one in Dacoma), roads in the City of Waynoka by the rodeo grounds . These are just to name a few of the duties I have watched Mike be involved with. A commissioner's job touches just about everyone in one way or the other. I have watched daily as Mike makes future plans for Dist. #3 and the county, as well as witnessed the concern he has for a constituent that has a problem or question without an easy or quick answer. I also feel valued as an employee, and have been treated fair, and able to voice my opinion even if we don't always agree. Despite his busy schedule, Stake has found time to give back to his community. Burglary foiled by pickup breakdown Suspect arrested almost six months later By Marione Martin Alfalfa County has filed four felony charges against a Cleo Springs man suspected of burglarizing a Carmen business and taking two vehicles from residences in Cleo Springs and Carmen. Clayton Lee Wilcox, 26, has been charged with grand larceny, larceny of an automobile, burglary second degree, and unauthorized use of a motor vehicle. According to documents in the case, Wilcox is believed to have taken a pickup in order to burglarize a business, then stolen another vehicle when the first pickup wouldn’t start. The incidents occurred on or around Jan. 24, 2014, in Alfalfa and Major counties. About 3:55 a.m. on Jan. 24, Alfalfa County Deputy Sheriff Blake Trekell was advised by dispatch that a burglar alarm was going off at Native American Marketing on Main Street in Carmen. Trekell arrived about 4:07 a.m. and found the back door of the building had been tampered with, and it appeared someone had gained entry. A grey Ford pickup at the scene contained several aluminum wheels and batteries in the back that appeared to have been loaded from the trucking company. The hood of the pickup was up. It appeared the pickup had broken down and stranded the burglar. Next to the driver’s door on the ground, Trekell found a black case typically used for storing glasses, which appeared to have fallen from the pickup. Inside the case were a syringe with what appeared to be methamphetamine inside and a clear plastic baggie with a crystal substance that appeared to
be meth as well as a short straw. Also inside the pickup was a piece of mail with an address in Cleo Springs. Trekell asked the sheriff’s office to contact a wrecker to pick up the vehicle and contact Bill Curry, who had a key to the business. Curry arrived and identified the property in the pickup as belonging to his company: two aluminum semi wheels, several vehicle batteries and some miscellaneous scrap metal. He valued the wheels at approximately $350 each. Trekell made several passes through Carmen and the immediate area looking for a possible suspect but was unable to locate anyone. After obtaining permission from the Major County Sheriff’s Office, Trekell went to Cleo Springs to the address on the mail found in the pickup. He spoke to Elton Dale Rose, who said the pickup was his and was surprised that it was missing. He wanted to report it stolen, so Trekell contacted Major County for a deputy to take the report. Rose said he had been at his residence all night. At 1:34 p.m. on Jan. 24, Trekell received a report that a pickup had been stolen from a residence one and one-half blocks north of the bank in Carmen, approximately one block from Native American Marketing. The white GMC four-door pickup belonged to Vencil and Loreta Green. Trekell suspected the person involved in the burglary had taken the pickup. While talking to the Greens, Trekell was told someone had contacted them that their pickup had been found parked in a farm yard about two miles
east of Cleo Springs. Trekell contacted Major County and went to the scene where the pickup h had been found. He met Undersheriff Darin Reames at the location where the Greens’ pickup was sitting in the driveway a little off the roadway. Reames said they found several items the property owner did not recognize stashed around the farm yard in various places. Trekell photographed the pickup and the items and contacted the owners. When Vencil Green arrived, he identified the items found around the farm – a battery charger and some chains – as his property out of his pickup. It appeared the suspect had removed the items and planned to come back for them later after the pickup was found. Trekell finally got a break in the case a little over five months later. On June 6, he was told by Alfalfa County Jail staff that trustee Brandelynn J. Alvarez had been overheard talking about a break-in at Native American in Carmen and claiming to know who did it. Later that day he interviewed her, and she provided a written statement. She wrote that her fiancé Elton Dale Rose might be a suspect due to the truck being stolen from him, so she did some investigation. She learned that Wilcox had left a note on their door upset with Rose for speaking with Trekell. She also talked to a friend named Mitchell who works at the sand pits in Cleo Springs, who said on the night their pickup was stolen Wilcox had asked him to take him to the Carmen Coop. Street project bonds approved, car wash coming to Kiowa, senior citizen parking Kiowa City Council: fireworks discussed, future of food commodities unsure By Yvonne Miller Kiowa’s City Council covered a full agenda at their June meeting last week. They approved bonds for street projects, heard a request to move Webster’s fireworks to the old Ellis Field and discussed liability, discussed opening of a new car wash on Main Street and its effects on senior citizen parking, and much more. Mayor Brandon Farney presided over the meeting with all members present, including R.L. Simpson, Bill Watson, Mark Lambert, Tom Wells and Russell Molz. City Administrator Nathan Law, City Clerk Marlo Rugg and City Attorney Laurel McClellan also sat at the board table. As reported in last week’s Newsgram, the council held three separate executive sessions. Following one of those, Water/Sewer Superintendent James Duvall was suspended one month without pay and then will have one month probation upon return to work. The other was a discussion about who has jurisdiction over hiring/firing of the police department. Car Wash and Zoning Special Exception Approved Kiowa’s Planning Commission met May 21 to have public hearings on two different proposals. The
commission approved both proposals to go forward to the city council for their consideration. On of those is a car wash facility to be built on commercial property along Main Street between Corner Stop and the senior citizens center. Brian Nielsen, son-in-law of Monty Williams who was also present, made the presentation. Seven reps from the senior citizens center attended to tell their concern about losing parking spaces on Main Street in front of their center due to the car wash. Law presented the senior citizens with an alternative parking plan. All seemed in agreement and the car wash and parking proposal moved forward to the council. When discussed at the council meeting, Watson said whoever was building the car wash should pay part of the parking expense. Many other council members disagreed. Wells said, “We need a new business in town.” Molz said, “The city owns the building, so the city can pay for parking.” Molz reminded the council that the senior citizens gave their van back to the city and the city sold it for $16,000. The other hearing before the planning commission was a request for a zoning special exception from Spencer and Mary Smith. This is to construct a house with two large garage structures (to hold their RV). After all questions were answered, the commission sent it on to council for
consideration. The council approved. Street Bonds Approved As the council already approved street improvement projects, they took action to finance them. Beth Warren with Ranson Financial attended to present the winning bid of the bond sale that morning. Cooper Malone McClain won the bid for general obligation bonds with an average net interest rate of 2.521 percent. The council also approved tax security and compliance procedures as prepared by Kevin Cowan. Ordinance No. 413 and Resolution No. 464 for the issuance of bonds in the principal amount of $225,000 received council approval. Webster Request to Move Fireworks Display to Ellis Field Shon Webster requested he be able to move his growing fireworks display from the residential area of his yard to the old Ellis Field (owned by the city) where soccer is now played. Councilmen Watson, who owns Insurance Professional Association and sells the city insurance, told the council the city’s insurance will not cover special events such as this. Watson suggests Webster get his own special event coverage and the council agreed. Molz said Webster can get donations for the insurance coverage ($500,000) as he does for a portion of the fireworks. James McGee remembered at new Memorial to Fallen Educators dedication at Emporia By Yvonne Miller The name of James “Jim” McGee, who grew up in Kiowa, Kan., is now etched in granite as one of 113 names on the new Memorial to Fallen Educators at Emporia (Kan.) State University. Each of the 113 educators from across the U.S. died in the line of duty doing what they loved: teaching America’s young people. Bagpipes played solemnly in the distance as family, friends, colleagues and community members approached the Memorial to Fallen Educators last Thursday afternoon for a dedication ceremony. Principal at Goddard (Kan.) Junior High School, McGee was shot and killed Jan. 21, 1985, by a 14-year-old student who entered the school with an M-1A semi-automatic rifle. McGee attempted to stop the boy when he opened fire. The juvenile wounded two other teachers and a student before being apprehended by a Wichita police officer. McGee’s wife Crystal was pregnant with their fourth child at the time. She spoke at the memorial dedication. Two of the couple’s children were able to attend, as were McGee’s two remaining siblings, Carol McGee and Max McGee, both of Kiowa. Their parents were the late John and Minnie McGee who raised their family in Kiowa. The family expressed how important it is to know that their loved one is not forgotten. “I think that is one of the hard things about loss,” Crystal McGee said as she stood at the podium. “You lose somebody you love and you see the world going on. So it is important to families to know that the world did stop for a moment to remember him.” Jordan McGee is the son Crystal was carrying the day his father was killed. In an interview at the dedication that aired on KSN News in Wichita, Jordan said, “My dad did what any other educator would do. That’s what this memorial proves.” Jordan continued, saying, “Every name on that wall were average teachers and educators who came to teach and ended up doing much more than that.” The McGee’s daughter Jeanne, who was 10 years old the day of the shooting, also attended. Their son Jameson of
Virginia, just out of the Marine Corps, and son Joseph, a minister in west Texas, were unable to attend. However, Crystal and the children have a trip planned to visit the memorial together in the near future. Origin of the Fallen Educators Memorial The Dec. 14, 2012, school shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary in Newtown,

per acre. Test weights are in the over 60 pounds-per-bushel range. It was probably best summarized by Steve Inslee, manager of O.K. Grain Cooperative in Kiowa, Kan., when he said, “Yields are bouncing all over the place – 24, 7, 12 and 15 (bushels to the acre). Test weights are dropping to below 58 (pounds per bushel) with the latest rains. It’s hard to tell how much is cut because of the low yields. We’re probably 40 to 50 percent done. It’s the worst harvest I’ve seen.” Sue Schwerdtfeger, chief financial officer of the Dacoma Co-op, said they’ve had yields from 10 to 24 bushels per acre. She said they started out with 60 test weights, but have dropped to 58-59 pounds per bushel. Dacoma area cutters are fighting the mud in the fields. Shane Parker, manager of the Farmer’s Co-op in Cherokee, said “Every day we get started, it rains.” He said Cherokee area yields are ranging from five to 33 bushels per acre. Grain

test weights ranged from 61 down to 56 as of Tuesday. “It’s not a very good year, but we anticipated that,” Parker said. “The rains have drug it out – but we needed rain, so that’s good I guess.” He estimates cutting in the Cherokee area is 50 percent complete. At the Burlington Co-op, manager Robbie Newman was not available for comment. However, Rose Dotson in the central office said, “It’s not the best.” Ronnie Truelock, manager of the Alva Farmer’s Cooperative, said Alva area farmers have seen yields ranging from five to 30 bushels per acre with the average about 16. “The humidity is still high – but we’ve resumed cutting. It’s pretty boggy so far,” Trueloock said Tuesday morning. “We hadn’t yet seen a dramatic decrease in test weights. We started in the 60 (pounds per bushel) area and are now down to 58 to 59 pounds. If it keeps raining, test weights will keep dropping.” Truelock estimates the Alva area is probably 60 percent complete on cutting their acres. “If we’re going to lose a crop to weather, this is a good year to do it because the crop couldn’t have got much worse. If there is a silver lining, it’s that we’re getting moisture and that gives optimism for next year.” The price of wheat hovered around $6.89 per bushel Tuesday.

It’s official: new Mexican restaurant to open in Kiowa Los Mariachis
By Yvonne Miller If all goes according to plan, a new Mexican restaurant will open in Kiowa, Kan., within about two weeks. That’s according to owner Noel Lopez, who is opening his new restaurant on north Seventh Street at the location that was formerly Barefoot Cafe, Chieftain Grill and the Dairy Bar. Lopez attended the Kiowa City Council meeting last week, seeking approval
for the cereal malt beverage license for which he applied. The council granted the license. Lopez owns the Cancun restaurant in Anthony, Kan. He said the Kiowa restaurant will feature the same menu and food, but will have a new name: Los Mariachis. He said there are also Cancun restaurants in Cherokee and the Kansas towns of Pratt, El Dorado, Park City, Hays and Cimarron. At first, Los Mariachis will only be licensed to serve beer. However, Lopez
said they’ve applied for a liquor license with the state of Kansas so should be able to serve margaritas, sangria and other mixed drinks within the next 30 to 45 days. Lopez said he lives in Anthony, but plans to have an apartment or house in Kiowa, as he’ll spend many hours at the new restaurant. Lopez said he is in a lease with the current owners through September. Then a new contract goes into effect, Lopez said, when he’ll start to purchase the facility.
Stranded mother arrested for child neglect, DUI By Marione Martin When law officers checked on a mother stranded beside the road with two children in her car, they ended up arresting the woman. According to documents filed in Alfalfa County, on June 12 about 12:50 a.m. Alfalfa County Deputy Sheriff Blake Trekell was contacted by dispatch about a vehicle stranded along the side of U.S. Highway 64 about a mile west of Ingersoll. Since he was some distance away, he asked dispatch to contact the Cherokee police officer on duty to check on the welfare of the driver. About 1:59 a.m. Trekell was contacted by Woods County Deputy Sheriff David Cummings, who said he was enroute to the county line to pick up a female that had been picked up by the Cherokee Police Department. He said it sounded like something Trekell should look into. Cummings said the woman, Dedra Shae Collings, 25, of Alva had told Cherokee officer Matt

Jones about having stolen property in her car from Woodward Walmart and Dollar General. Trekell asked Cummings if he could go to the location and stay with Jones until Trekell arrived. When Trekell arrived about 2:27 a.m. he met Cummings who said Collings was in the passenger seat of his vehicle. Trekell sat down in Cummings’ patrol vehicle and spoke with Collings, who appeared to be extremely confused. He asked if she knew where she was, and she said on the Woods-Alfalfa county line on the highway (which was still seven miles further west). He asked if she was on any meds or under the influence of any drugs. She said she had taken some Celexa, an anti-depressant, and Buspar, an anxiety drug. He asked if she had used any illegal drugs, and she said she smoked marijuana about three days ago. Trekell noticed Collings had a blank look on her face and her speech was
slow and slurred. He asked what she was doing at midnight with her two children, both under four years old, in her car. She said she had driven to Driftwood Church to seek “solitude.” He read Collings her Miranda rights and she said she would talk to him. He asked what property she had in her vehicle that was stolen. She said she had taken some items from Walmart in Woodward approximately the 16th, 17th and 18th of last month (May). He asked if he could take a look in her vehicle, and she agreed. Inside the Collings’ vehicle, Trekell found cans of starter fluid and person hygiene items stacked in a child seat. He placed Collings under arrest for public intoxication and child neglect due to her apparent inability to care properly for her children along a U.S. highway in a motor vehicle in a storm. desire for schools to be safe havens for students and educators alike. “I would like to thank Carol and the National Teachers Hall of Fame for recognizing these fallen heroes,” said Buck, “but it is my hope that we never etch another name into the granite.” McGee Family Comments Carol and Max McGee said they were “very impressed” with the memorial and the people who organized the dedication. “They were very respectful,” Carol said. The McGees were joined by several cousins, other family and friends for the ceremony. Max said it meant so much that Gene Watkins attended the dedication. Now in his nineties, Watkins was assistant superintendent at Goddard when McGee was shot. Carol said her brother was the only Kansas teacher on the memorial. Ironically, McGee earned his master’s degree at Emporia State. The memorial is located directly off the interstate through Emporia, so it’s easy to access for motorists who want to visit. “You never have complete closure, but having such a respectful memorial is comforting,” Carol said.

June 9, 2014 9:19 a.m. Abandoned vehicle, respondent advised there is a semi trailer parked part-way on the county road and blocking the Salt Plains vet clinic drive, advised deputy, vehicle is blocking drive, request tow company, called wrecker they advised the semi driver has just left, he had broken air hoses, driver is there to move trailer. 2:51 a.m. Dog at large, respondent advised a dog has killed some of individual’s chickens on Highway 45 in Carmen, they have dog in a cage, deputy advised. 8:48 p.m. Livestock at large, caller advised of black calf out south of Comanche on Highway 8, advised possible owner, he ran the calf into the fence on the east side of the roadway. June 10, 2014 9:36 a.m. Livestock in roadway, respondent advised of a black cow with a yellow ear tag out on County Road 690 between Caddo and Aline, advised possible owner, they will check. 11:55 a.m. Medical emergency, respondent advised of driver possibly having a stroke, left side is numb, 1 mile south of County Road 700 and Osage on east side of road at disposal site, Cherokee Police Department paged Amorita/Byron, guys on the site have loaded him up and are heading to Byron, has gotten truck stopped at County Road 695 north of Leflore. 1:50 p.m. Stolen property, respondent advised of 10 calves stolen from 1 ½ miles east on Crystal Road, deputy

12:17 a.m. Miscellaneous, respondent called and wanted an ambulance three-quarters of a mile west of Carmen on Highway 45, respondent advised that a 50-something year-old female was having trouble breathing, advised Helena Ambulance. 3:20 a.m. Grass fire, respondent called and reported a small grass fire on County Road 650 and Kay Road, respondent said he is worried that with the wind would grow and catch a tree line is it near on fire, advised Amorita/ Byron Fire Ddepartment, Amorita/Byron on scene, they have the fire under control, someone over radio advised it was a controlled burn, Amorita/Byron advised to call owner and tell him that they had to go out there and that someone needs to be keeping an eye on the burn. 12:57 p.m. Respondent called upset about someone calling in his controlled burn at 3:20, they should have known it was a controlled burn and could see that they had burned around it, they have pushed dirt in on it and put it out, he called the city and sheriff’s office both three days ago stating he was having a controlled burn, he’s just pretty aggravated that they did that. June 15, 2014 2:38 a.m. Miscellaneous, deputy reported that the stop sign at the intersection of Carmen and Dacoma is down, called district commissioner and gave him the message. 5:17 a.m. Accident, seriousness unknown, Cherokee Police Department called about an accident in Grant County on Highway 11 somewhere between county roads 800-880, Woods County to dispatch out for Grant. 9:21 p.m. Information, went back to do a med pass and individual’s cellmates asked where he was that he wasn’t in there, looked closely in his cell and in every other cell and did not see him, was walking out to call deputy and figure out what was going on, individual finally came out from under his bunk. June 16, 2014 12:52 a.m. Miscellaneous, respondent called and reported the road washed out off Highway 64 east going toward Jet/Nash down County Road 620, advised District 3 commissioner, he will take care of in the morning.

took another truck to get back to Cleo Springs. Mitchell said he needed a place to hide and he later found him hiding in his camper. She said Wilcox had also left between 19 and 25 death threat messages on Rose’s voice mail. Trekell then located Mitchell Waugh on June 9, who confirmed what Alvarez said she learned from him. On June 9 Trekell went to Garfield County Jail and talked to Rose, who was incarcerated on a DUI charge. Rose said Wilcox had come to his house with someone else. Rose learned Wilcox was unemployed, and he needed some help so asked him to help scrap the trailer behind his house and help hang some sheetrock.
He said it was a long day and he fed Wilcox lunch. Later Wilcox left and then came back to work. He ended up spending the night with him. That was the night the pickup was missing. Rose said Wilcox had been with him in the pickup when he shut it off, pulled the keys and then started it again without the key so Wilcox knew it could be started without a key. Both Rose and Waugh identified Wilcox from a Facebook photo Trekell showed them. The four felony charges were filed in Alfalfa County on June 11. On June 16 Trekell arrested Wilcox on the warrants and he made his first appearance in court.
