Burlington school soup supper and Christmas program On Monday, Dec. 15, Burlington Public Schools will present its annual Christmas program, which features all grades, pre-K through 12. Before the program, you can enjoy a soup supper prepared by the Lion’s Club. The elementary students will present a holiday musical, “The Littlest Reindeer,” by John Jacobson and John Higgins, featuring Morgan Mader as the littlest reindeer. The fourth through sixth grades will perform two band selections and two vocal selections, including “Santa Claus is Comin’ to Town.” The evening of music will conclude with performance by the 7th12th grade band and vocal group. The vocal

group will sing “Mary, Did You Know?” as Cade Smith plays Joseph, Tesslyn Dunn plays Mary, and Nancy Loewen acts as the angel in the live nativity scene. The students are under the direction of Kiley Feely. The Scholastic Book Fair will be open before and after the program in the library to help support the Accelerated Reader program.

By Lynn L. Martin At their regular meeting, the Alva Board of Education was told by Superintendent Steve Parkhurst that several coaches and one paraprofessional had resigned from their positions. Head football coach Bruce Dollar is resigning the coaching portion of his job effective Dec. 19. Head softball coach Paul Duncan sent a letter to Alva High School (AHS) Principal Les Potter resigning Dec. 5. One day earlier, on Dec. 4, Dusty Horn resigned his coaching position with the Ladybugs softball team. ShaDee Chrisman notified the administration of her desire to resign on Nov. 20, 2014, from her paraprofessional job. The board received a list of scheduled board meetings for 2015. Most meeting dates are equivalent to the 2014 schedule other than the meeting times changed from 5 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. The board heard the following enrollment numbers: Alysson Tucker said the student numbers at Washington School total 222; Steve Shiever said Longfellow school had 221 students; Tim Argo said that Lincoln Elementary had 140 students; and Parkhurst said the middle school has 209 students. AHS enrollment is 255. The district number if 1,047. An interesting conversation occurred at the end of the meeting with Superintendent Parkhurst telling the board that he had inquired of an architect for an estimate of what it would

cost to build a single new building housing all elementary students PK through fifth grade. The number $13 million came back for a building with a gym, cafeteria, library and 34 class rooms. The topic was brought up previously at a planning meeting as it would reduce payroll from three principals to one, and also reduce duplication of the food preparation kitchens. Parkhurst said the figure did not include any land acquisition costs. In his financial report, Parkhurst said the district has $4.6 million invested in banks around Alva. He said the revenue for the district is up $2.2 million from a year ago. He wondered out loud what the low oil prices are going to do to the gross production tax revenue the district has been enjoying. The fiscal year (FY) 2014 gross production revenue was $1,044,291.79. The FY 2015 gross production revenue is $1,777,517.11. Football gate receipt revenue was considerably lower than last year. The total revenue for five home games was $9,226. The revenue is shared among all sports. Football received $5,959, basketball received $980.10, and five other sports received $457.38. They are softball, baseball, golf, track and soccer. Three fundraisers were approved. A labor auction for baseball will be held on Feb. 11, 2015; art T-shirt sales will be held during December and an “orphan pot sale” was also scheduled for December. An orphan pot is one created in an art class but not taken home by the creator.

The school averaged serving 567.8 lunches in October; an average of 175.60 breakfasts were served during the month. A total of 20 days food was served. Several items were replaced in the kitchens. Items removed and declared surplus included a Metro Flavor View warmer, a Montague double stack oven, a Garland single oven, a Crosley Silverado refrigerator and a Whirlpool refrigerator. Patrons will be invited to make bids for these items. The board approved two new policies as required by legislation from the last term. One, called DNA-P, was entitled “teacher performance evaluation procedures.” The other was called EHBC and titled “Special Education.” Tim Argo, Lincoln principal, said he got his eyes opened at the amount of work needed to host a book fair. He and new librarian Samantha Louthan showed up on one of their days off to prepare for the Lincoln book fair and Argo said he has developed enormous respect for the librarians who arrange those. The board approved a request from Burlington High School to co-op soccer with Alva High School. Previously, Freedom High School made a similar request, which was approved. A trip for the FFA and 4-H livestock judging team was approved to the Kansas Beef Expo in Hutchison, Kansas, on Dec. 12. A contract was signed with Pepsico that will require their products to be sold at school concession stands. The total revenue from the five year contract to the school will be $17,875.

Billy Ann is survived by three daughters, Lucy Ann Brown, of Norman, Mary Margaret Moore and husband Guerry Moore of Edmond; Patricia Kay (Trish) Andrews and her husband Mark Andrews of Norman, six grandchildren, Meredith Snavely of Los Angeles, California; Bobby Jack, Brandon Jack, Bryan Jack, Erin Andrews all of Norman and Patrick Andrews of San Antonio, Tex., one great-granddaughter, Emerson Olive Snavely of Los Angeles, California, many other family members, nieces, nephews and friends. Prayer vigil was held Monday, Dec. 8, at 7 p.m. at Havenbrook Funeral Home. Funeral mass was held Tuesday, Dec. 9, at 10:30 a.m. at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Norman, Oklahoma. Waynoka First Church of God where she served with the Women of the Church of God (Missions) and taught Sunday School for the youth for over 20 years. While her children were in school she hosted many parties for them and often invited pastors and friends to wonderful Sunday dinners following church. Esther loved sewing and making beautiful outfits for her daughter and five granddaughters. She also enjoyed quilting with friends at Senior Citizens and was a fantastic cook. Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Clyde Clemence; one daughter, Janice Riboni; one brother, Ralph Woolley; two sisters, Daisy Minnie Duncan and Florence Ethel Like; and four grandchildren, Stephanie Clemence Rushing, Michael Rushing, Keath Rushing, and Erica Rushing. Esther is survived by one son, Eldon Clemence and wife, Norma, of Aurora, Colorado; four grandchildren, Lanas Taylor Long of Waynoka, Kelli Clemence Saffell and husband, Kirk, of San Antonio, Texas, LaJan Taylor of Galena, Missouri, and Penny Clemence Engler and husband, Bruce Turner, of Aurora, Colorado; four great grandchildren, Kathryn Saffell of New York City, New York, Rebecca Saffell of Austin, Texas, Kyle Engler of Aurora, Colorado, and Hanson Long of Alva; other relatives and friends. Obituaries BILLY ANN BROWN Billy Ann Brown was born June 20, 1928, in Alva, Oklahoma. She passed away peacefully in Norman, Oklahoma, on Dec. 6, 2014. She was the second daughter of William L. and Anna Margaret Shanahan Eller. She attended Catholic School in Alva. She was a 1949 graduate of Northwestern Oklahoma State University. She worked for several years at McClure Insurance Agency before becoming secretary to the President of Northwestern Oklahoma State University. In September 1955 Billy Ann married Robert L. Brown of Alva. During their early years of marriage they moved around Oklahoma, Texas and Montana on a seismograph crew. In 1962 they moved to Norman and she began working at the University of Oklahoma for Dr. Cedomir M. Sliepcevich, associate dean of the College of Engineering. After 31 years at OU she retired. Billy Ann was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church for over 50 years. Billy Ann was very devoted to her Catholic faith. She received the St. Joseph the Worker award in 1987. In 1988 she was named Outstanding Woman of the Year by St. Joseph’s Woman Club. She was active in the Women’s Club and St. Monica’s Guild. She served as Eucharistic Minister for a number of years. She served on the Parish Council at St. Joseph Catholic Church and held various offices with the Women’s Club, St. Monica’s Guild and Altrusa Club of Norman. She was also very active in Altrusa Club of Norman, a professional business woman’s organization. In 1995/96 she received the Marie Pickel Award from Altrusa Club of Norman. She volunteered as IRS Tax Assistant; Board of Directors for RSVP and AARP. Billy Annâ’s pride and joy was raising her three daughters. She was extremely proud of her Irish heritage. After retirement Billy Ann enjoyed spending time with her family and watching her grandchildren’s activities. Billy Ann is preceded in death by

ESTHER RUTH CLEMENCE Esther Ruth Clemence, daughter of the late Floyd William and Ethel Mae (Springer) Woolley, was born July 17, 1919, in Woods County, Oklahoma, and passed away November 26, 2014, at Alva, Oklahoma, at the age of 95 years, 4 months, and 9 days. She was cremated at her request and memorial services will be at a later date. Esther attended the Cottonwood School through the eighth grade. She dreamed of having her nursing degree but due to the poor economy at the time her family was unable to send her. Therefore she opted to attend school one more year the only way she knew how and that was to again take eighth grade classes. On Jan. 28, 1935, she was united in marriage to Clyde Franklin Clemence by Rev. Smith in the Church of God Parsonage in Waynoka. Clyde and Esther were lifelong citizens of Waynoka where they owned and operated Phillips 66, Clemence Laundry, and Thrifty Wise, later known as Century Foods. She has been retired since 2001. She was an active member of the

Three hour executive session results in superintendent contract and pay raise By Stacy Sanborn The Cherokee Board of Education met for a regular board meeting at 7 p.m. Monday night. Board President Amber Wilhite along with members Kory Littlefield, Melissa Kimminau, Tony Hellar, and Jeff White got down to business approving minutes of the regular Nov. 3 and special Nov. 18 school board meetings. They tabled discussion and vote to approve a middle school intervention program before discussing a resolution to determine the maturities of, and setting a time, date, and place for, the sale of $385,000 General Obligation Building Bonds of the district. This past March, $530,000 of a $4.505 million bond were sold and the resolution calls for a second sale to take place March 2015 for the $385,000. The item agenda was approved. In the treasurer’s report, the members approved the numbers. At this time, the general fund is up $1.7 million from this time last year with the building fund sitting at a negative $51,000 and the sinking dund at $1,500. In the approved activity fund, it was reported $102,000 has been paid in just this month thanks to all the fundraisers being done by the students. Encumbrance clerk Judy Porter presented the encumbrances for the general, building, and sinking fund. She pointed out an open purchase order for 20 laptops from KanOkla. Superintendent Cory Ellis clarified the laptops were for the elementary teachers

to take with them (rather than their PCs) for the move when construction and demolition work begins. After encumbrances were approved, the superintendent began his report. He said this Friday parents and students will start to see changes: portable storage units will be arriving and the beginning phases of demolition starting. The superintendent said a lot of work and a lot of meetings have happened to make the transitions easier and less confusing. He handed out a packet of information titled Cherokee Public Schools Elementary Spring 2015 Logistics. According to the packet, logistics for 2015 will look like this: • Pre-K and kindergarten will be in the same location until further notice and dismiss at 3 p.m. • First and second grades will be at the Methodist church and dismiss at 3:05 p.m. • Third and fourth grades will be at the Baptist church and dismiss at 3:10 p.m. He said there are three families that will have to be at all three sites to pick up children and 35 families that will have to be at two sites, so the staggered dismissal times should help those people get from site to site and also alleviate some of the traffic congestion. Per the handout, arrival and dismissal procedures should go as follows: • Parents are not allowed to use the Grand Avenue parking sites at either location.

• Parents are to remain in vehicles to drop off or pick up students. • There will be personnel to help assist the children in the morning and afternoon. For the Baptist church: • Only entry to be used is the south entry on Seventh Street, as all other entries are for church access only. • The school office will be located first door on the left – Seventh Street will become an exit only to Grand when school starts and ends. Cones will block access from Grand. • Parking for parents/teachers is allowed on Kansas and overflow parking area southeast of the church at the intersection of Kansas and Seventh. • Baptist church student drop-off and pick-up is located in the alley – accessing the alley from Sixth Street exiting onto Seventh Street. For the Methodist church: • Drop-off and pick-up will be in the alley between Fourth and Fifth streets with the approach coming from Fourth Street. • Teacher parking will be from the alley to Kansas and parent parking in remaining areas. Though it may seem confusing, Ellis said that if people trust the system, it will work. With so many factors to consider, the logistical plan may be subject to change. Moving on through the agenda, the board voted and approved several items. They declared the grandstands at the football stadium as surplus and voted to donate them to the Cherokee Round Up Club. The current lights and poles at the football stadium were declared surplus as well, with the board voting to donate them to the City of Cherokee for future recreational projects. Next, a part-time maintenance worker, David Newlin, was voted on and approved to be hired as well as high school paraprofessional/interpreter Manuela Castro. The board then voted and agreed to convene in executive session to discuss the superintendent’s evaluation and 2015-2016 contract pursuant to 25 O.S. See Cherokee Page 60

South Barber approves transportation director, swimming, accepts resignations Four board of education seats open in spring election; Junior/senior high Christmas program Monday, Dec. 15, 7 p.m.

By Yvonne Miller The South Barber Board of Education met for their December meeting Monday night with President Steve Allen calling the meeting to order with all members present including Jeff Black, Deb Helfrich, Dooli Rugg, Dana Roark, Mark Pollock and Mike Anderson. Superintendent Brad Morris and board clerk Julie Johnson also sat at the table. Morris announced that four of the South Barber Board of Education seats are up for reelection in the spring. Those seats are currently held by Anderson, Black, Helfrich and Roark. A call to the Barber County Clerk found anyone filing for those positions must do so by Jan. 27 at noon in the clerk’s office at the Barber County Courthouse in Medicine Lodge, Kansas. If a primary is needed, it will be March 3. The regular election is April 7, according to the clerk’s office. Swimming to Again Be Offered for Grade School Students at Start of School For years South Barber grade school students got to swim in the public swimming pool during physical education class the first two weeks of school. Then swimming was stopped this year by administrators for a variety of reasons, such as the time and cost of

transportation, getting young students’ clothes changed in a timely fashion, and the elementary school now having central air conditioning so students are no longer hot in the building and need to be cooled down in the afternoon, etc. Despite those reasons, many parents requested that swimming be reinstated. On behalf of parents, Ann Walz addressed the board at the start of school who said they would reconsider the issue. It appeared on the agenda again Monday night with Walz and physical education teacher Deb Hitchcock present. President Allen said, “100 percent of the parents I’ve met with are for it.” Realizing this school time instruction at the pool might be the only swimming lessons some youngsters receive, Allen said he’s considered the benefit to students and sees it as “a possible life preserver.” The board unanimously approved that grade school students can swim during P.E., class the first two weeks of school. Hirings, Resignations and More SB Board Business Kiowa man Keith Rathgeber received the board’s approval as director of maintenance and transportation. The board approved Patsy Hood as a substitute teacher for USD 255. Hood was raised in Kiowa, was an educator away from here many years, and is now retired

in Kiowa. Longtime pre-K teacher Delores Diel submitted her letter of resignation effective at the end of the 2014-15 school year, which the board accepted. The resignation of Marlo Rugg as assistant track coach was accepted by the board. Regarding school lunch prices, the board approved increasing the a la carte food items from 75 cents to $1.25. This is at the recommendation of Superintendent Morris who said the food service audit showed USD 255 is losing too much money in that area. The board approved use of the district’s gymnasiums for recreation basketball practices and games. Cammi Hostetler received board approval to use the South Barber High School (SBHS) auditorium to have a Dec. 17 Christmas show for her dancers from Studio Pro in Kiowa. Payment of current bills totaling $250,716.65 received board approval. Under board member reports, Helfrich said she attended the recent State School Board Convention in Overland Park, Kansas. She shared information with the board about many of the sessions she attended, a few of which are the quietness and efficiency of propane school buses, upgraded technology security cameras (that zoom in to where you can read fine print instead of grainy images), and a tour to some urban schools (one of which offered 100 percent free and reduced lunches). She said Dale Dennis, deputy commissioner with the Kansas Department of Education, gave a financial review. Helfrich said that P1, the group that did the major improvement project at the grade school, attended the convention. She said that P1 wants to use those SB improvements in their advertising because they are so proud of the results. Administrative Reports Superintendent Morris reported recent purchases: new ice machine and new dishwasher (to be installed over Christmas break) at grade school; Intergreen plumbing is fixing a drain problem in the boiler room at the grade school. Lots of fascinating events going on in our area By Lynn L. Martin A couple of ribbon-cutting ceremonies occurred this week. The Wymer-Brownlee firm had a ribbon cutting Monday on the west side of the square. This financial services firm has merged with longtime Alva accountant Steve Knox in the Professional Building on the west side of the square in Suite J. Another ribbon cutting occurred yesterday when the OnCue chain opened a CNG refueling station across from the airport. Compressed natural gas (CNG) is an alternative fuel for vehicles. There are many oil-drillingcompany-related pickup trucks in the area that use that as their fuel source. CNG is typically half the price of gasoline and so some real economy can be achieved using those types of vehicles. *** I was saddened to learn that Mistie

Kline is going to cease operating the ETC Shoppe at the end of December. I remember a few decades back working with Evelyn Kamas and her daughters to open the business. We had recently moved to Alva after purchasing KALV and I remember working with Evelyn at her house on promotion plans. My wife, Marione, did some Christmas gift shopping there the other day and said they have some nice going-out-of -business discounts on merchandise. *** Some of the best news this weekend was Lauren Heaton being named Miss Rodeo America in competition at the National Finals Rodeo in Las Vegas, Nevada. I photographed Lauren’s baby pictures and many of her publicity shots over the years. The Heaton family members have been very loyal customers over the years, which I appreciate very much. I am thrilled at Lauren’s success. She is a sweetheart. We’re going to provide a few display pictures for the welcome home party at the Alva Middle School cafeteria Saturday at 7:30 p.m.

*** An interesting conversation occurred at the Alva School Board meeting Monday night. About a month ago, the board had a brainstorming public meeting to toss around ideas for the future. One of the possibilities was a new building to combine all the elementary grades into one, pre-K through fifth-grade school. That would save quite a bit of overhead costs with one principal instead of three, one kitchen and cafeteria instead of three, and so on. During his report, Steve Parkhurst told the board he had checked with an architect and he came back with a guesstimate of $13 million for a building with 34 classrooms. It would take a couple of years to accomplish such a project and I’m sure some principals would be worried about losing their jobs, but what I’m hearing is that a huge number of superintendents are coming to retirement age (about a third of all those in the state) and there will be plenty of opportunities for those wanting to get into administration. *** There are several of our community infrastructure entities developing their own foundations. NWOSU led the way, now Share Medical Center, the Alva Goldbug Foundation, and the Cherokee Strip Museum Foundation are all trying to build funds to help with growth. I’m sure I’ve missed some but most of these have had recent ads in the Newsgram telling about their work, so they are top-of-mind for me. This is smart because for several decades most organizations have looked toward the Share Trust for such help. The Share Trust is still important but they do not have unlimited resources. They’ve led the way so we all can see what wonderful things can be accomplished. If you or your family have been blessed with unexpected wealth because of the oil boom in Woods County or the wind-energy boom in adjoining counties, rather than just sitting on the money wondering what to do with it, before the end of the tax year you might want to be your own little Share Trust and reap some tax savings while at the same time helping local projects.

South Barber High Mini Cheer Clinic The looks on these little girls’ faces says it all! They love dancin’ and cheerin’ on the South Barber Chieftains with their friends – maybe in future years as a cheer squad member. The South Barber High School cheerleaders hosted a Mini Cheer Clinic to teach elementary girls cheerleading fundamentals. This is a fundraiser for the high school squad and an opportunity for them to mentor the youngsters. Sod House celebrating 120th anniversary with Christmas Open House The 120th anniversary of the Marshal McCully’s sod house will be celebrated at the Sod House Museum’s Christmas Open House on Saturday, Dec. 13, from 1–3 p.m. A memory of Christmas in the depths of a harsh winter was still a joy for all pioneers. Sometimes nothing more than hankies, gloves, or even a small gift of sweets was given in celebrating Christmas,

The sod house will be decorated in the traditional style of the late 1800s, while the museum facility will be decorated for Christmas commemorating different decades, including the early 1900s without electricity, the 1940s and 1950s with icicles, the 1960s with a silver tree, and 21st century Christmas decorations. Entertainment for the event will be provided by fiddle player Darrel Long and others from the area with Christmas music and early days songs. Cookies and hot cider will be served by the Friends of the Sod House. To celebrate the 120th anniversary of the Sod House the Friends group will be giving a Christmas

tree ornament to each family in attendance. The Christmas Open House celebration is free to visitors as our “thank you” for your continued support of the museum. A queen-size quilt made by Dorothy White of Fairview and quilted by Kay Frantz of Cleo Springs will be drawn for at the Christmas Open House with tickets still available. Come and enjoy an afternoon of Christmas celebration at the museum. The Sod House Museum is operated by the Oklahoma Historical Society. By Yvonne Miller Kiowa’s Main Street buzzed with activity Sunday afternoon with a Christmas Open House. Merchants were

open and there was a vendor show. While shoppers bustled, kids got to give their list to Jolly Old Saint Nick, get a picture and candy and see a holiday movie, all

for free. A highlight as the afternoon concluded was the aroma of homemade chili simmering in Centennial Park. Six men entered the Prairieland Chili Cookoff. Some entries were mild, others gotcha’ with spices and jalapenos – all were delicious. People put in their $5 to taste all the entries and then select an entire bowl, which was perfect in the cool, damp air of early evening. Tasters voted for their favorite, which resulted in a winner of Jon Bogatay, who created a white chicken chili. Others entering were Kevin Cox, Josh Myers, Mike Hiltner, Bobby Drake and Dan Lukins. Prairieland donated $50 to the winner. The over $300 funds raised went to the South Barber Ministerial Alliance Food Pantry and the recreation commission.

Pre-K-6th Grade Principal Marcia Cantrell updated progress of the Leadership Team working on the school’s On-Watch status. She said there were no new indicators at the last weekly meeting designed for team collaboration. Cantrell said there was ongoing professional development in November. The United Methodist Women gave $85 to meet needs of the elementary. Senior/Junior High Principal Brent Shaffer said the Drama Club Play was well attended, over 130. School counselor Cheryl Washburn is taking a group of

high school students to Alva for an ACT preparation course. The counselor is also giving the Kansas Communities that Care Survey to students with parental approval. Finals are Dec. 17-18. Students will be bagging meals for the Kids Against Hunger project Dec. 10 (high school all-day) and Dec. 19 (junior high during morning only). Block the Door (where students bring non-perishable food and other items for the Ministerial Alliance Food Bank and block classroom doors to avoid classes) is Dec. 19 when school dismisses at 1 p.m., for Christmas break. School resumes Jan. 5. The high school and junior high band/ vocal Christmas concert is Monday, Dec. 15 in the gym. Check the school’s website for more events at www.southbarber.com. South Barber Student Achievements The South Barber Junior High School (SBJH) Tornadoes girls are 4-0 on the season and were champions of the Cherokee Basketball Tournament. The SBJH boys are 3-1 and were second in the Cherokee Tournament.

The SBHS Lady Chieftains were 1-0 after their opening game and played Burlington last night with results unknown at press time. The SBHS lost their opener in overtime against Caldwell. The FFA chapter has been busy with contests. Results follow: Dairy Cattle – A-Team, second place, with members Trenton Jahay, Clay Holcomb, Dale Hoch and Gavin Doherty. The B-Team was first place in their division and would have been third overall. Team members were: Brian Farney, Madison Polson and Sabrina Hughbanks. Trenton Jahay was seventh overall. Dairy Foods – A-Team was fifth with members Emily Rugg, Anna Perez, Bailey Roberts and Spencer Kimmell. The B-Team was fourth with members Brian Farney, Alexis Shaffer and Dale Hoch. Emily Rugg was sixth overall; and Anna Perez, eighth overall. As a child she would work in her brother Elmer’s grocery store, the drug store and the café in Sharon, Kansas. Her favorite job was helping her big brother Willard every morning on the farm, where he taught her how to drive. One time she had decided that she wasn’t going to help him anymore. So that morning, as per routine, Uncle Willard would start the pickup and wait for mom to come down. Mom decided to stay in bed. Uncle Willard yelled, “Are you coming down?” Mom said, “No.” He asked her, “Do you want to go to Wichita?” Mom shot down those stairs, went to the farm and got the chores done and then asked Uncle Willard if they could go to Wichita now. He said, “I asked if you wanted to go, not that we are going.” Mom and Uncle Willard always had to laugh about that story. Three weeks after she graduated from high school, she did the unthinkable. She moved to Kansas City and went to work for Transworld Airlines (TWA.)

Her father worked for Santa Fe Railroad, along with her big brothers and uncles. They all loved teasing her about her working for an airline instead of the railroad. While she was in Kansas City, she met the love of her life, Walter DeLong, on a blind date. One of her roommates set her up with the date. Mom always said she thought dad would be a simple, bucktooth farm boy with the way her roommate spoke of him, but how wrong she was. They married June 28, 1958. From this union they had three children, Theresa (DeLong) Rathgeber (husband, David) of Kiowa, Kansas, John DeLong (wife, Vicki) of Casper, Wyoming, Kathleen Petermann (husband, Bryan) of Anthony, Kansas; three granddaughters, Trisha Purdon (Joe) of Coffeeville, Kansas, Alicia Ruiz of Lawrence, Kansas and Destiny Petermann of Coweta, Oklahoma; five grandsons, Josh (Dedra) Rathgeber of Anthony, Kansas, Jason DeLong, Jeff DeLong, Jeremy DeLong of Casper, Wyoming and Austin Petermann of Coweta, Oklahoma; six great grandchildren, Aiden and Braxton DeLong of Casper, Wyoming, Hayden and Anden Rathgeber of Anthony, Kansas, Harrison Purdon of Coffeeville, Kansas and Gabriel De Los Santos of Coweta, Oklahoma; and one daughter, who adopted LaVeda and Walter, Lynda Rumple (Tim) of Morresville, North Carolina. While raising her family, LaVeda worked at the Jack and Jill Grocery Store in Kiowa, Kansas. In North Carolina she worked at Custom Products. When Walter and she moved back to Kansas, she worked at Coontz Manufacturing in Kiowa, Kansas, and for South Barber School District. In 1993 she decided “she should create a purpose” so she opened Accents in Hardtner, Kansas, where several of the local people had arts and crafts for sale. In 1999 she helped her youngest daughter in her candle factory, also called Accents, to make candles and sell them in her store and in businesses in the surrounding area. LaVeda was a crafts person; she loved to paint, but most of all she loved to crochet. She taught several ladies in Hardtner how to crochet and tatt. She earned the title of the fastest hooker in Barber County. On Dec. 2, 2014, after a long illness,

she was called to heaven to teach the angels to crochet and to join her husband, Walter DeLong. Rosary was held Friday, Dec. 5, 2014, at 7 p.m at St. John the Apostle Catholic Church in Kiowa, Kansas. Mass of Christian Burial was held on Saturday, Dec. 6, 2014, at 10 a.m. with Celebrant Father Firmin. Burial followed at Riverview Cemetery with arrangements by Lanman Funeral Home, Inc. of Kiowa. ELMER GOODMAN The graveside memorial service for Elmer Goodman will be 2 p.m., Friday, Dec. 12, 2014, at the Alva Municipal Cemetery under the direction of Marshall Funeral Home of Alva. He was cremated at his request. Edward Elmer Goodman was born July 20, 1918, to Edward and Nora (Dunn) Goodman near Selman, Oklahoma, and passed away Nov. 17, 2014, at Alva, Oklahoma, at the age of 96 years, 3 months, and 28 days. At a young age they moved to Soccoro, New Mexico, where his dad worked on a ranch. They moved to Capron, Oklahoma, where Elmer attended school and worked for several area farmers. He also worked for the Rock Island Railroad and the State Highway Department during WPA. In July 1940 he married Maxine Cox of Alva. She preceded him in death in 1996. In 1943 he entered the United States Navy. He spent two years in the South Pacific aboard the destroyer U.S.S. McCalla. He was a fireman first class and third class water tender. He was discharged in November 1945. Elmer worked as a mechanic in Kiowa, Kansas, and later for American Motors in Alva for 26 years. He then worked for Leo Meyers Case dealership for five years. He then worked for Ware Motors until he started his own mechanic shop in 1970. He closed the shop in 1997 See Obits Page 46

Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Maxine; an infant son, Edward; his sister, Leila Whitton; and a brother, Walt Goodman. Elmer is survived by his son Don Goodman and wife, Susan, of Liberal, Kan., his daughter, Joyce Sellers of Dickson, Tennessee; three grandchildren, Ray Trekell of Tennessee, Joe Don Goodman of Woodward, and Crystal Goodman of Woodward; and two step grandchildren, Steve Williams and wife, Kay, of Salina, Kan., and Trish Dodds and husband, Josh, of Bardwell, Texas, seven great grandchildren, one great great grandchild, four step great grandchildren, one step great great grandson; and many other relatives and friends. Memorial contributions may be made through the funeral home to Oklahoma Medical Research Foundation for Parkinsonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s research. J. R. MILLER J. R. Miller was born Frederick J. R. Robert Lee Smith was born Sept. 9, 1941, at Cherokee, Oklahoma, and departed this life at his home in Walters on Dec. 7, 2014, at the age of 73 years, 2 months and 28 days. Robert grew up at Burlington, Oklahoma. He has been a lifelong trucker, having worked for various transport companies through the years, to include several enjoyable years with Stevens Transport. He also worked as a driller for Thomas Drilling through the mid 1970s to mid â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;80s. He was making his home on the family farm at Burlington when he met Janet Sue Zachary. They married on Nov. 30, 1991, at Walters and have made their home at Walters since that time. Robert enjoyed gardening, tinkering with things and loved spending time in his recliner. He was preceded in death by his father, John Blevins; and his mother, Esther (Gerrells) Smith. Survivors include his wife, Janet Sue Smith, of the home; two daughters, Daphne Smith and husband Robert A. of Isabelle, Kan., and Dawnita Smith of Burlington, a son, Greg Smith and partner James Brumley of Alva, two grandsons, Jahue Warman and Mackannah Smith; other relatives and a host of friends.

Alfalfa County sheriff’s log December 1, 2014 5:49 p.m. Welfare check, respondent wanted a welfare check on her dad in Jet, she tried to call his phone but it goes straight to voicemail, respondent also called another individual and no one answered, looked up address in phone book, advised deputy, got a hold of the dad, told him to call his daughter, told respondent that her dad will be calling her. 6:38 p.m. Reckless driver, respondent called and advised that two semi’s about drove her and her children off the road at Highway 8 and turned on Highway 11 west toward Burlington, respondent stated that one semi blew the stop sign and the other blew the yield sign, advised OHP to see if they had anyone in the area, OHP had no one in the area. December 2, 2014 10:34 a.m. Controlled burn north of Ashley elevator. 5:01 p.m. Major accident, respondent called about an accident at 8 and 8B, a white pickup is on its side, Onstar called and said a two vehicle accident at same location with injuries, one person pinned, deputies advised and en route, notified OHP, paged out Carmen Fire for traffic control, Carmen Fire en route. 5:35 p.m. Minor accident, respondent called that he hit a deer yesterday between Alva and Cherokee, his boss told him to

fill out an accident report, they are staying in Alva, advised to go to Woods County Sheriff and fill out report. 6:20 p.m. Information, respondent called and said that someone was threatening to take parts off her mother, from here going to grandparents house, from grandparents going back to other residence, deputy advised. 9:39 p.m. Information, respondent said that a car had pulled into his neighbor’s yard and had sat there with their lights on, they had sat for a while then left, just want us to know where his neighbor lives. December 4, 2014 3:24 p.m. Reckless driver, respondent called to advise that a Ford red fourdoor crew cab pickup passed him on the construction zone on Highway 64 west just pass the old school, advised Woods County and OHP. 4:50 p.m. Miscellaneous, respondent called in to report that the arms on the railroad crossing were stuck on Highway 45 west of Carmen, respondent stated that the train went by 5 minutes before and the arms are still down, advised BNSF and deputy. 6:16 p.m. Minor accident, CPD patched through a 911 call, respondent stated that she had a single car accident and didn’t want to make a report, respondent is located a little past the four-

way north of Cherokee on Highway 11 east, respondent said her tire hit a crack in the road and since it was wet she lost control of her vehicle and went into the ditch, respondent wanted help getting out, gave her the number for the wrecker service in Alva. 6:40 p.m. Accident, seriousness unknown, CPD patched through a 911 call, respondent advised there is a two-car accident at the four-way north of Cherokee and the road is blocked, respondent stated there isn’t any injuries, Cherokee Fire Department arrived, OHP advised, trooper 2 miles out, leave vehicle where they are and wanted to know if any injuries, advised that there aren’t any injuries. December 6, 2014 11:36 a.m. Dog at large, respondent advised of a brown German short hair dog with a white chest and an orange collar is roaming around CR 540 and Hughes Rd, in case anyone called, respondent can be notified if the owner wants to know the dogs’ whereabouts. 11:55 a.m. Vehicle fire, respondent advised of a fire at the intersection of CR 500 and Cotton Rd, gas line was hit while pipe was being laid, an escavator has caught fire, Carmen Fire Department and deputy notified, Alfalfa County Emergency MGMT notified.

Luke and Heather Murry of Alva received a very special gift on Thanksgiving Day when their baby boy decided to arrive a couple weeks early. Colton Tyler Murry was born at Integris Bass Hospital in Enid on November 27, 2014 at 9:27 am. Colton weighed in at 7lbs, 6oz and was 20” long.

The proud grandparents are Matt & Linda Murry of Alva and Kevin & Connie Hinderliter of Waynoka. Great-grandparents are Phil & Sandy Murry, Alva; Barbara Hearn, Waynoka; Veston & Pat Hinderliter, Waynoka; Leonard & Gerri Ball, Enid and the late Alice Mae Ball. Colton has one Great-Great-Grandma, Daisy McGolden of Beadles Nursing Home in Alva. Colton was also welcomed home by many Aunts, Uncles, Cousins, and other family & friends.
